Title: Mordheim related questions
Post by: Konrad von Richtmark on January 08, 2005, 01:27:19 PM
A Mordheim campaign is about to start over here. Yesterday I got my first look into the Mordheim Annual 2002, and there are some things I'd like your opinions on.

-Is the Shadow Warriors warband any good? I definitely fancy the idea of a fast-moving elite shooter band darting back and forth, maueuvering, peppering down the enemy with missiles, and using speed to take them out piecemeal when close combat is joined. Or have I got the wrong picture of them?

-How well does the underdogs system work? Can I enjoy the campaign even though I play less often than the others?

From my experience with mordheim your better off if you play the same ammoutn as your opponets i started off fighting my friend he had a well experienced band and well lets say it wasnt real pretty.  But the mor experienced your opponets band the more experience u gain ;)

As for the shooters.  I tried picking up some shooters but buiildings just create too large of an obstacle in my opinion but try it and see how it makes out.

My 6 sence.

I LOVE the underdog system.  You can get a TON of experience in only a short number of games.  The only problem is keeping your models alive.  If you voluntarily rout as soon as you lost the minimum number of models, then you'll get lots of XP.  I know this isn't very fun at times but its a quick way to get your warband to fighting potential.

As for the shadow warriors warband, again its like warhammer and depends on your playing style.  Shadow warriors are great at climbing and can outrun any warband outside of Skaven.  I've never had any experience playing them but I'm biased towards shooty warbands.

After two games with Shadow Warriors, I love them. Fast, and climb incredibly well. Darting back and forth, shooting while annoyingly chanting "you can't catch me!", and making a swift counter-charge when the enemies get close, slicing them with many attacks with good WS.

One of my Shadow Walkers, properly named Thindor the Quick, got two new skills on his two first level-ups. Now he has the Sprint and Leap skills, making him insanely fast. While running he moves 15+D6 inches! And not only that, he can walk 5+D6 inches and still fire his longbow!

Just don't try to outrun Skaven.  An Assassin with lead and sprint moves 18+d6 inches every turn and will hack anything you have to pieces.

I've heard multiple times that the Shadow Warrior rules are considered unbalanced.
Just see how they turn out, sometimes it takes a while for a Warband to reach a point of nastieness that's extremely hard to overcome for other groups.

That's why Shadow Warrior rules are still unofficial

Are all the Mordheim Annual warbands unofficial?

Well, they're neither under the Offcial New Rules or the Experimental Rules, so what should I think?

Go here:

http://www.specialist-games.com/mordheim/assets/pdf/living/MHRRv7.pdf

It's the Mordheim review pdf.
Scroll two thirds to three quarters down the page and there's someting titled Elf review. Then read about a page - tells you all the official bits, (tournament accepatable) also says you can play locally how you like, then makes comments about other bands that are 'close' to official.
Then it finishes saying Elves are nowhere near:
 - obviously cheesy, way overpowered, not suitable, pointy faced and arrogant about how fast they are..........
(the last bit was my spin - but I am sure you guessed......)

I'd say the best bet is anything published in the Main rulebook, the 2002 Annual, and the Empire in Flames suppliment are your best bets for what is official.
