Shotzie at the Local Rouge Tournament
« on: August 27, 2006, 06:02:20 PM »
I played a Rouge Tournament at Sci-Fi city yesterday (Orlando, Florida), 18 armies, 3 games each.  There was a nice mix of armies, one Empire, not mine.  I took my Orc hoard out for one last spin.

I took

Black Orc Boss
Goblin Wizard Lord
Savage Orc Shaman

20 Orc bigus
20 Orcs
20 Savage Orcs
20 Black Orcs
40 Night Goblins
12 Goblin Wolf Riders (non-fast cavalry)

All of the above had full command, night goblins had 3 fanatics

5 Goblin Wolf riders with bows
1 chariot for the Wizard Lord to hide in
Rock Loba
Doom Diver

Golgfag's Ogres

2 dispel scrolls, wards saves and magic armor, no magic weapons.

Game 1 against Gary's Dark Elves, mission gain ground

Gary was a great player, but it was a slow game, as I out numbered him he was slow to advance because I had set up anvil and hammer units all across the board, I didn't want to advance into his fast moving charge range he didn't want to be hit by the hammers.

Highlight for him was my Wizard Lord killing himself with his 1st spell of turn 1 with a miscast (a trend for the whole tournament).  Highlight for me was my savage orcs killing his Giant, over running into his cold ones, breaking them in 2 turns and over running into his dark riders, killing 4 and breaking the unit.  I would have had more points, but I couldn't catch them, so at the end of the game each unit had 1 model, so I only got 1/2 points.

MVP fanatics, Gary's witch elves released my 3 fanatics, one hit and killed a few, but then because they were frenzied they had to charge through the other 2 fanatics to attack the night goblins.   :-o

Side note, Golgfag ate his executioner unit.

In the end, we had both killed about a 1000 points, I had charged his cold one chariot on the last turn with my general and big ums, the big ums fell short, the General whiffed, as did the chariot, I lost by 1 due to out numbering broke and was run down.  Solid tie and great fun, the mission was gain ground and Golgfag held the hill for extra points.

Game 2 against Bob's orcs and goblins

Bob had a similar army as mine, but more goblins and orcs, no black orcs and he had 2 snot wagons.  This was a blood bath as we both knew it would be.  Over 350 models on the field.  We played over our time limit into the dinner break, Bob asked if I wanted to surrender as it was into turn 6 and the only battle that was going to happen was a unit of his goblins that was in combat and was going to be flanked by Golgfags, as it was dead, we stopped.  So that answers the question for me if I will ever surrender.   :-D

Highlights for Bob was breaking my wizard lord on turn 2 and running him off the board, easy 270 points.  Highlight for me was having 9 fanatics on the board at one time, although I think I took more damage from my own, they ate into both our armies.

There was not too much left at the end, but all of my Characters were dead, all of his alive, solid win for Bob.  Mission was breakthrough, which we both met.

Game 3 Erick's Dwarfs

Erick was a nice young man (about 15 or 16) and he had lost to my son's sea elf army in the 1st round.  Erick was new to dwarfs, and hadn't played against orcs before, so I tried to help him out.  I got the whaa off the 1st turn and my goblin wolf riders hit his flame cannon and one of his cannons on turn 1.  True to form, my wizard lord miscast on turn 2 and killed himself.  I tried to warn Erich that he needed to support his dwarf units, but he had faith in them and sent them in against my units.  They did do well, taking more than they got, even taking out my unit of black orcs (he killed 10 in one turn with some rune that double his kills), but once he hit my anvil units, the hammer hit his units from all directions.  By the turn 5 every dwarf was dead.  Erick killed about 1000 points of my army (270 points was my Wizard lord killing himself).

Highlight for me was having 3 units on each of his 3 units of dwarves at one time.  Highlight for Erick was the dwarves took a lot with them and only one unit broke, and it was down to his general and BSB when it did finally break.

Solid win for me, mission was messengers, all 3 of mine made it through, I let his through as I knew his army was toast by turn 2 and I wanted him to have some fun.

So it ended 1 tie, 1 loss, 1 win for me.  My brother lost 2, won 1, and my son won 1, and lost 2.  We all had a great time.  The Wizard lord sure did not turn out like I planned, and it will be even a greater risk in 7th edition, so he will be going bye-bye, or down graded.  On the other hand Golgfag made major points in all 3 battles and was only knocked down to 1/2 straight in one, so I have master using him.

Then it was time for the awards, I was shocked that I won best general :-o, the only thing I can figure is that winning all the missions pushed me high enough to win :?.

And what did I win, but the steam tank .  Now I have 2, boy have they gone up in price.  I bought mine for $45 when they were having a 2 for 1 sale, so I paid like $25 for mine.

I don't think the new rules will let me field 2 Stanks, so I am not sure what I am going to do with it.  I guess I'll wait and see if variants will be allowed in 7th edition.  If they are, I may make the "Implacable".  Or I could just trade it in for Blood Skull Pass, or maybe a new rule book.  :-D

Hey - Best General! Outstanding [Clapping smilies goes here]

How did the Doom Diver perform for you? I'm also curious about the wolf riders with bows as I see so few of them.

The Doom Diver did OK, it took out a few models in all 3 battles.  It survived the 1st and 3rd battle, so it earned more points than it lost in those, in the second it killed a few Orcs and Goblins, so it didn't earn it points back.  The reroll ability didn't do that much for me, in all 3 games, it only turned 2 misses into hits.  My dice rolling has been cold lately, so that is part of the problem, when I did hit, I often rolled 3 or less, so I think a 2nd Rock Lobba would have been better.

In all 3 battles it shot at infantry units, and it will not do enough damge to force a break test, I find it does much better against knights and chariots.

I was pleased with the 5 wolf goblins, they are a bait unit/anti-weapon team.  In the 1st game they kill 2 dark spear men, and then 1 executioner on a stand and shoot.  But what they really did was set up the executioners for a counter charge from Golgfag's Oger unit, which then held the mission objective for me.

In the second game they killed a few Orcs, so they didn't earn their points, if I remember right they got hit by 1 of my fanatics, we had 9 out at one point, my 3 and his 6.  It was a fun pointless game.  I took his bait a lot and paid for it.

The 3rd game is where they paid off, they hit one of the cannons on turn 1, due to the whaa spell, keeping the cannon out of the rest of the game (they even won after 3 turns of fighting).  The other Goblin non-fast cavalry was able to do the same to the flame cannon.

I don't plan on dropping the Doom Diver, so you can say I was pleased with it.  The goblin wolf riders, well I don't look for them to earn points, when they do I look at it as a bonus, they are there to disrupt the enemies' plans, which they do well.

Congrats on the Best General award. Aren't greenskins fun to play? Exploding shaman was a feature of my Orc army too, still, it's kind of like animosity, hope it doesn't happen but laugh if it does. Nice to see a tourney O&G army that doesn't have a giant, by the way.

cheers

Thanks all, the greenskin are fun to play, we just had a great laugh all 3 games.  It is the nice thing about the orcs, you have so much, you can loose something big, or important and just go on.  Let's see the Vampires, or Tomb Kings do that.

Duckman, I stopped using the Giant, I had it in another post, but my son plays High Elves, and my brother plays Tomb Kings.  I took too many wounds from S-3 arrow and I hated loosing 10% of my army before it fought.  Also it never seemed to do earn it's points back the few times it did make it into battle.  That, and it can't go toe to toe with Bone Giant.

Wisenheimer I have mixed feelings on Trolls, and I just stopped using them, when I get them into battle they normally can hold their own against other big monsters, their regeneration make up for their lack of armor.  But I have failed too many stupidity tests, the mounted general I used above I got for the sole purpose of escorting the trolls, but I have heard rumors that characters can't join with monsters in 7th edition, that and even with a hero I had problems with stupidity.

In the above battle, I charged the cold one chariot on the last turn because it had failed it leadership roll 2 turns in a row, even with leadership 9, and was almost in range of 20 Big Ums (missed it by less than an inch, if they had hit it, I would have won instead of a tie).

Thanks Shotzie

I believe so, older gentleman (more gray than I  :-D).  I do not remember his last name, but he told me he had moved down here from Georgia and had been active in Gen Con.  He had been playing warhammer from the early 80's.

Heck of a nice guy.

I did trade in my Steam Tank for the Battle of Skull Pass this last weekend.  They were very nice about it and gave me full retail price.  So I got a can of primer and 3 jars of paint.  There was some sticker shock as the primer was $9, and each jar of paint was $3, but I can't complain, it was free  :-D

Yeah, that sounds like Bob, he is old, but young at heart.  I thought he played with your brother sometimes?

Yep, that has to be the same Bob, my brother has played him a few times.  My brother has made more of the tournements this year due to my freelancing, but now that I have full time job again, I should be able to make a few more.

I will tell him you said Hi at the next tournement!
