My journey into Nordland!
« on: October 03, 2021, 09:56:40 AM »
Hello everyone,

Long time lurker, first-time poster here! I have taken huge amounts of inspiration from the community here (and for that, I thank you all) and wanted to follow in your footsteps by documenting my progress in accruing, building, and painting my latest obsession - Empire troops!

The first minis I ever received were in the late ‘80s, picked up by my dad from a car boot sale alongside a copy of one of the very early editions of White Dwarf. I was hooked. I didn't know what I was looking at, but I loved the art style and aesthetic.

At the time I was money poor and time rich. Fast forward 30 odd years and things have switched somewhat. I have a family, a job and a house that needs work. All good problems to have - but it does mean progress will be slow.

To that end, I figured being able to post here periodically would provide the incentive needed to keep plodding through the several hundred minis that will comprise the army.

So to kick off the post, I wanted to share 3 varieties of the scheme that I have been working on.

I wanted something that would pop but be semi-realistic; not too cartoony but equally not too muted.

I think I’m leaning towards the white-feather guy. What do you guys think?

All are nicely painted. Did you paint them somehow differently, with different techniques?

Keeping a plog is a good idea, and hopefully kicks you forward in painting.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the fold!

For my taste no-chin guy's yellow is a bit too citrus and that doesn't jive with the downtrodden warhammer world. The other two are very close. red spear's yellow maybe is a bit warmer, looks neat.

Also something to consider for painting a whole army is if one version is significantly faster to do than the other. Have fun!  :::cheers:::

Thanks for the feedback guys! Yes, I think I agree with you - that yellow *is* too citrus - good way of describing it. I think I'm going with White Feather guy for now - I like the warmer tones and rich blues.

I'm nearly done basing everything - still have a few units to go and some unit-fillers to dream up! I'll add pics shortly :)

Ok, slow but steady progress!

I have used my decided scheme in anger on this bowman - very happy with the result so I think I'm pretty much there with the model scheme now. I'll make a few tiny alterations including using a duller silver for the armour and tweaking the base recipe. But that's it!

I've also converted/bashed ~25 monopose Bretonian archers to create my own regiment with a bit more dynamic nonuniformity. Again, I'm pleased with the result and am looking forward to painting these up in the above scheme along with a few unit fillers for good measure!

And lastly (albeit a bit of a cheat because I had made this a little while back for my youtube channel) I've undercoated and finalised my scratch built War Wagon! She'll look splendid with her kitbashed crew which I'm still working on (3 to go). All for the princely sum of a few quid for a couple of horses, wheels, and a smattering of balsa wood. Link to the Tutorial on my Youtube channel here: https://youtu.be/005Mg8ez77k

Next up, more undercoating and an aim to make some headway into my swordsman unit...

Edit: Added youtube link for War Wagon build

Yes, please provide youtube link.  We do permit those here.

The archer looks very good, as does the herd of them ready to fling a flock of arrows at the enemy! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:

That war wagon is absolutely wonderful! A proper one, not the top-heavy cartoony one that GW produced, which couldn't house the six engineers properly based. (I'm a proud but a little bit unhappy owner of the old one. No real impetus to build it.)

Also great Youtube video. Your presentation is really good & clear. But it's eight months old? And you only posted this here now? Your other videos are also great, and the quality (video, voice) has gotten better over time. Can't remember them posted on any forum or FB group earlier.

Wait a second. Is that a little pug at the foot of one of those archers?
Now go! Ride towards the sun atop these noble steeds
You're our spandex heroes, now fullfil your destinies
And so we turned and rode beyond the castle walls
with shiny codpiece armour that doth cradle our chivalrous balls

Well, I didn't say I was going to be quick at this...

But here we go! My first unit complete! (I completed this a while back but didn't get around to updating with photos. I have made some additional progress into a unit of handgunners since then. I hope you like the results so far...
