Great stuff! One of my colleagues is into the custom toy scene, it's a really interesting art form which overlaps with our miniatures hobby. The main differences seem to be down to the much larger size of the toys and the large smooth areas to paint on. And as you say the freedom from making your art compatible with a game.
Really impressed with your work there. The fact that GamesPoet isn't sure if the detail is painted or sculpted (it's mostly painted in my experience) shows just how good your painting is. :::cheers:::
The bee knights were actually a thing, I'm sure I've seen them kicking around on ebay before. Those 15mm riders may actually be true 25mm halflings in armour, or faerie knights or something like that.
And that is indeed a frost dragon, the Ral Partha Fearless Frost Dragon by the great Nick Bibby, no less. I would love to see you paint that!
Manann in gold.
Love the lesser goblins, where did you get hold of the toadstool's? really make the base.
Reaper Bones are an awesome concept. Some work better than others - the weapons on man-size models can be a bit wobbly and overly chunky, I've replaced a few with GW plastic bits and you end up with a very nice model very cheap. They are massively convertible too, you can hack off huge bits with nothing more than a sharp knife. Top marks to Reaper for using this to bring us cheap models and affordable large models rather than just to gouge extra profits out of people (they probably make more profit per mini sold, but you know what I mean). Read the advice on the Reaper website about working with the Bones polymer - mind you, it might be similar to the vinyl toys you work with?
I like the painted undead idea. You could just have them dunk themselves in a vat, save on the effort of brush painting them all. Could look interesting. Psychologically, I wonder if it might detract from the Terror a bone-toned walking skeleton causes?
color of bones can be quite varied as in mineral seeps from the ground vs. sun bleaching, vs. moldy. Red skeletons would be very funny specially if you are an old gamer who remembers the red Skelton comedy night show. steveb
Bones is lovely to work with - easy to cut, easy to glue. Just make sure you give it a good wash beforehand and make sure the primer is absolutely bone (lol) dry before you start painting.
Ooh, I like that. I was thinking that as my solo narrative campaign progresses, I may want to do some Empire style troops like this, representing the spread of the sinister influence as the battle moves into home territory. That would be a good way to start.
I have painted up a prototype for some Ogres that have also been turned.

I was just digging around for my WFB 3rd ed. rulebook and I'm really annoyed/upset that I can't seem to find it.
Oooh, I like the Vulture man. And there are three of them, designed to be cast, you say?
going through old boxes and finding old/new stuff is one of my favorite pastimes, and discovering old unfinished projects that can be repurposed is my second most favorite things........... I am now glad that I saved some of this stuff that I had no use for way back when (when I was an Orc and goblin player) Now I am amazed when I find a box that has not been opened for decades, steveb
Another option would be to use your developing casting skills to reproduce something more expensive. Personally, if it's OOP and for my own use I wouldn't have a moral issue with that. I have a few recast 1980s miniatures hiding in the back ranks of one of my armies. My moral stance is reinforced by them being too badly done to sell on anyway! ;)
Btw, I agree with your views on the newer GW plastic kits. I built that box up as Hexwraiths and found them unnecessarily fussy to assemble. The same with the High Elf Dragon Princes I've been converting. It seems a shame that they all have to be assembled "just so", like Airfix planes.
wow, the giant and beast are really nice, the giant is one of my favorite pieces, when I painted mine it almost seemed to paint itself, all I was doing was transfering the paint from the pot to the figure. How was it for you?
ZeroTwentythree, Remember to close, and lock the door. Since you are the only member, you do not want to be discovered playing with yourself.
I'm thinking about starting a gaming club. I'm chewing on some names like Lonely Attic Wargaming, or Lonely Attic Wargaming Group. The former has the advantage of a great acronym ("I am the LAW!") but the latter has an amusing irony, since I will most likely be the only member. The latter's irony could still work with ... "I am the LAW Group". Sounds like a not for profit legal service, too! :icon_lol:
I may even "rebrand" mu blog with the name. After all these years, it still doesn't have a proper name. I'd like to redesign the layout & graphics anyway. Maybe even come up with a logo...
a good shot of spray silicone keeps things from drying out, getting moldy, or decomposing, especially lichen it stays soft and pliable for a long time after spraying with silicone. another option is to immerse your biodegradable materials in a mixture of flower preservation mix and it will keep for virtually (gamer wise) ever. I agree thaat some things are more trouble than they are worth in the long run. steveb
Ah, didn't realise you on TMP. Love the Chaos Knight.
Tell us about the ship sketches stuck on your light. Another project?
All John Blanche books are highly collectible and thus pricey - something to treat yourself to as a birthday present perhaps. But Nightmare Legion models come up on UK eBay all the time, and you can pick them up for fair prices if they aren't in the original box.
Nope, it was an older RoR. Betrayed Tilean mercenaries. The fluff & old stats from the box reprinted here: http://www.solegends.com/citrr/rrd02nightmare.htm
green stuff and bit of insta mold would work really well for this.
I assume this eye monster is one of your own creations?
Snotlings!
Lovely old models :)
After browsing this, I almost went and knee-jerk started wood elves (classic models obviously) Always the danger is dabbling with non-empire posts. Brilliant work!
Wow, love those old Jabberwocks, and the Grenadier Pond Dragon is an old favourite of mine. Not at all familiar with Chronopia miniatures, but that looks creepy!
For paint stripper, I'm a big fan of large pickle jars - but then I'm a big fan of large pickles, too!
Really like that old citadel jabber. How big is it? Roughly ogre size or a bit smaller? There's something about it's face that just fits so well.
If you mean the one reared up on its hind legs, I love that model too. Mine is assembled (magnetized rider as well!) and primed, but I haven't started painting it yet.Yes, that's the one. My griffon is currently not even primed, but the original rider has been primed and painting to the point of blocking out with color only. I've used him as a commander on horse, and like the idea of magnetizing that model as well. Maybe he'll make it into my "100 Days of Painting" effort that is currently ongoing. Maybe, because there are so many things that this is causing me to want to paint.
Are those door mat cornfields by any chance?
Lovely skin! It's loveliness really stands out with the black undercoat remaining around it. :eusa_clap:
That horse looks fantastic. I have a huge problem with horses. They all end up just brown, or black.
Always a treat to see what 023 is doing with his painting. :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
And just to prove that I've finally started painting that Westfalia sample halfling....
That is a fantastic undead army there! I love the idea of a last stand as the various undead swarm over the remaining living defenders.
unless you propose some kind of total magical awareness.
anyway, sorry, don't want to get you off track. Keep painting please.
Great orc mercenary. Another case of finishing off a mostly completed unit. I also wantef to do something colorful before getting back to that unit of black knights.
The photo is a bit overlit. Took it quickly before heading out of town for the day. I'll get a pic of him with the others (already painted) when I'm back home tomorrow night.
I do think I need a little break from painting undead. So I should pick an Empire/mercenary unit to do after the knights. I have minimal missile troops, so maybe Marauder dwarfs with handguns (and a pair of swivel guns)? Crossbowmen from the Perry plastics? Birdmen of Catrazza (do they even count?) Melee options are Foundry landsknecht pike, old Empire halberdiers, another unit of Marauder dwarf spear/pike or some Front Rank billmen.
I think I may have a few other things packed away, too.
The birdmen do not count, in fact they are totally worthless so if you want you can bundle them up and send them to me,
I've got him, and lots of his wonderful buddies from the Foundry range sculpted by Kev Adams - I saw some greens of new models to fit the range at Salute in April.
I've got a total of six of the older ones, and have been eyeing a few more at a local shop. But unfortunately with my limited budget, they are hard to fit into my plans. Otherwise I'd start collecting the entire set!
I still need to decide on a symbol/blazon/device/badge/whatever-you-call-it for the standard and possibly on other figures in the future.
Well... since they're Halflings, what about... a half-meter stick? :) You know, since they're Half-men and stuff they probably want to go that extra half-mile before half-time. Maybe they'll even get half-back, which is twice a quarter! They do look kinda wealthy, so I bet they see the glass as half-full... and not half-empty. I bet they'd be pretty good at protecting and policing Half-way houses. They should do things half-way instead of half-a...:icon_lol: :::cheers:::
I have been experimenting with some road terrain that I've had in my head for a while, but was finally inspired to start after reading an entry on another blog. I'm not going to copy all of the details here (feeling lazy) but you can read about it here:I like the idea of having raised roads in the area that you've picked west and northwest of Marienburg. The picture of the cork tile as road, it is difficult to see the effect after the painting, yet not sure hwo that could be improved, or whether or not it is just the photo. Some sort of slope from the regular ground up to the road might be good as well? Not that it couldbn't work as is, yet it seems to look too square from the ground level to the top of the road, although if it elf constructed, suppose one could explain it that way.

By the way, the idea that the area for the campaign is where it's been located, the more Bret style of the Westfalia halflings could also work into the story. Maybe they are a hearty group that resides on the sides of the moutainous area at the very northerly tip that overlooks the Marches of Couronne, and has that small valley between them and the rest of the mountains to the south. Perhaps they make lot's of cheese and luncheon style meats from the goats that they herd on the sides of the mountains, and sometimes use as mounts for their warriors or pull their war wagons, both that have been known to escort their caravans of trade goods, along the raised roads of the area. I'm also imagining that they have lot's of berry patches that they farm, mostly used for jams and jellies, and perhaps the purple color of their clothing (and I imagine dark blues and deep reds as well), which naturally helps hide the stains from such sugary deserts that feature the sweet fruit preserves that they enjoy as much as they export, along with their cheeses and sliced meats.
It does look perhaps a little concretish, but I think you'd get used to it. I do agree that some sort of bank, slope or just kerb would help massively (or combination of those). I think it's the fact that it just rises perfectly vertically from the grass that makes it look so modern. If the cork is fairly stiff and the edging material reasonably strong and stuck to it well I don't think you need additional backing material at all, or maybe just card.
Oh, how about using some sort of timber beading as edging? Quarter round for banks, or something angle cut, or ? It's usually pretty cheap, something like a pound a meter over here. Would be tough as anything (but hard to do curves maybe!)
Don't recall seeing that figure previously. With the 40mm base, does that means he is taller than average?
Phil the spectre is awesome! I've always liked that figure and have been trying to come up with a legitimate reason to buy it. I love the way you've achieved the rusted metal and your painting really captures the dynamic pose well :::cheers:::
Invent your own rules - or use the similar rules skaven had for their version ( jezzails ?)

There's more to the rules on another page, but the important parts are that they hit 1+2(d6) models and have a firing arc of 180. No move and fire, no march.
For now, I'll be trying them out in non-WFB rules, though.
Now I wish my lead pile was more organized. I'd trade all of my disciples for that guy on the left...of course I have no idea how many of the disciples I still have. Oh well.
(They are the only original Regiment of Renown that I own.)
As much as I appreciate my collection of minis, I sometimes look back at what I had and wonder WTF I was thinking when I got rid of a lot of it. (Well, besides needing to eat & pay rent when I was in college and sold a lot of it off, etc.)
That's one of the only old mages I've still got a duplicate of, so a trade is entirely possible.
I like your work with that beastlord as well as the wagons. It is a shame we live so far apart as otherwise I would be heavily interested in joining you on your campaign.
I admire your will power! Your one purchase is an excellent choice, though. I really like that model. Good job for my budget that I didn't think to go looking for a Reaper sale!
There's probably a way to do this nowadays.I like your work with that beastlord as well as the wagons. It is a shame we live so far apart as otherwise I would be heavily interested in joining you on your campaign.I have put a brief amount of thought into some form of online, remote gaming. I may still try that in the future.

I don't quite have a good grasp yet of being able to envision it, yet that's probably because I'm a bit behind the times technologically. I just haven't kept up, and think its because it has seemed simpler and not necessary, yet that doesn't mean there isn't interest, and curiosity. Also, I wonder how such a thing could work for a campaign type experience, and I don't mean the stuff we've seen on the internet called an on-line campaign, I mean actual campaigns, like Padre has run, and off line.
I think rolling dice on webcam would be more fun than using random number any other way, tho.
Please don't paint them plain blue though, it's a miracle they ever sold any Empire minis using that vibrant and exciting colour scheme! :icon_eek:
excellent idea for the shields :::cheers:::, I used to do that for flags, but I never carried the thought on to do shields. Now I have something else to try to add to the endless list. steveb
I always think that the skeleton-animal skull head swap should look a bit naff, but it works well mixed in with other non-human skellies like this. It's a shame GW never made more of this - the Old World was littered with the corpses of greenskins, beastmen, elves and dwarves, but necromancers never seemed to bother raising them along with the humans!
Those mushrooms are fun! I suggest painting the others in a different colour scheme to hide / explain a different painting style? They scream "Night Goblin Project" of course. Or perhaps the basing elements for a huge Squig or giant fungi project of your own - something more on the scale and style of your vinyl toys... a crossover opportunity between hobbies?
These are on my long term "wanted list":
http://www.nobleknight.com/imagepage.asp?image=RAL02-952.jpg&name=Skeletal%20Beastmen
I'm relatively (just since last year) new to the Lead Adventure Forum (http://www.lead-adventure.de/), ...I've been there form time ot time and it seems like a very good place.
... and as time allows, I've been catching up on some of the great projects documented there. One of my favorites, and most inspirational, is that of DeafNala. If you like colorful, high fantasy, with some hints of oldschool (circa 1980s) Warhammer & White Dwarf miniatures, and comics like Gobbledigook, the art of Froud, Bode, Bakshi, etc. then check it out. All of it (http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=26140.0). Somewhere around page 201 there is a link to a Photobucket account full of photos, too.Wow, those look cool. :eusa_clap: :icon_biggrin:
Somewhere in response to my praise and worship, I received an offer of some mushrooms, and a significant batch of both painted and unpainted ones recently showed up on my doorstep.
They're even better in person! So now I'm churning around several plots on how to make use of them on my own gaming table. I'm a little intimidated about painting the unpainted ones, so I am trying to decide on a good way to paint them so they are different, but work well with DeafNala's own painted 'shrooms.
I have also just sacrificed some more of my much needed sleep in return for some much needed painting time. I really wanted to finish up one other thing of my own that's been sitting half-complete since... I don't know, spring or summer? I wanted a hodgepodge unit of beastman-esque skeletons. I painted half of them ages ago, and the rest included a few more that needed built, plus a few metal figures from the Cursed Company.I like these, congrats! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
There's a mix of figures & minor conversions here. Stock figures include a skeletal saurus, orc, and two skaven from the Cursed Company, and two skeletal dogs from Mantic. The rest are 4th/5th ed Citadel plastic skeletons with various additional animal skulls & bits.
I always think that the skeleton-animal skull head swap should look a bit naff, but it works well mixed in with other non-human skellies like this. It's a shame GW never made more of this - the Old World was littered with the corpses of greenskins, beastmen, elves and dwarves, but necromancers never seemed to bother raising them along with the humans!True and true.
I occasionally pop to the Lead Adventure forum to look at 1930s Interwar stuff, it's a treasure trove of ideas, or a deadly trap to get you interested in new, time consuming projects you never knew you wanted to do... didn't realise there was much Fantasy stuff there to be honest.
Reaper is slowly growing a steady line of various non human undead for it's bones line. I know the current kickstarter that just finished had a couple like undead minotaur, dwarf, hobbit, etc. And I seem to remember some in their previous ones to.
I do have one of the Cursed Company dwarf, but he looked out of place with all of his armour in a completely unarmoured unit. I am thinking about trying to put together a small unit of undead dwarfs using him and some chaos dwarf type figures at some point in the future. I found two old GW chaos dwarfs when digging trough my bins and thought I could paint them all rusty. Three figures is enough to warrant starting a new unit, right? :engel:
Where'd the dwarf artillery dudes come from? And the artillery?
I have some skeletal dwarf sculpts on John Pickford's to do list for later this year. :engel:
But sometime after the departure of the Elves and the Dwarfs and before the arrival of Man, Chaos and evil came, spreading like a cancer from the north and the south. The Skaven, digging their tunnels like cracks meant to undermine the continent, burst forth from the abandoned mines and ravaged the surface. Within a few decades, the land was a ruin: the herds were slaughtered, the waters poisoned and the groves cut down. Marching like vermin into the north of this realm, they found the Fimir, a race of reptilian giants who themselves were remaking the land in their own blasphemous image.
War was inevitable. For how long it raged, only the Fimir and the Skaven know, and certainly no one is asking them. The Skaven built great castles to hold their conquests, and slowly they pushed the Fimir back. In the end, there came a cataclysm that decimated both sides. Whether it was a last desperate effort by the Fimir, an attempt at final victory by the Skaven, or even a rebellion by the earth itself doesn't matter. Great waves of magic washed over the land and the earth convulsed and cracked. In a night, the castles of the Skaven and the holds of the Fimir were thrown down as the very bedrock heaved, broke and sank. Their armies were destroyed and their minions crushed or swallowed whole. By dawn the next day, only the land itself remained, nearly empty of life and hiding its wounds under a thick blanket of fog.
Ah, Old Glory, that might be the one I've seen undre their renaissance section. Almost ordered last year prior to Fall-In, and eventually will. I like the other one as well, and the Citadel dwarfs.Where'd the dwarf artillery dudes come from? And the artillery? The crew on the left are from the Marauder "siege gun" (cannon.) The gun on the left is from Old Glory. The gun on the right was a gift, and I don't recognize where it came from.
The crew on the right are old Citadel figures, but I don't remember what artillery they go with. (Begin drifting off, back in the mists of time...) I think I got them long ago when GWUS had a "bargain bag" sale, where you got to pick from a very general list, like "imperial dwarfs" or "norse dwarfs" or "skaven," and they would send you a random bag of figures at an actual (and unheard of, since) bargain price. That sale, along with the old Warhammer Regiments (http://www.solegends.com/citboxes/pbs3whfbregs/index.htm) set was how I filled out my first two full armies (dwarfs and skaven) when I was young.
My phone has trouble photographing white, so this is hard to see. But I accidentally started making this tonight.Looks like quite the beast of chaos ya got going there. Or else a conversion to a Fimir! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

I saw one of these Bones orcs when I went to a local store to pick up a few paints I needed. Still some work to do, like the weapon and tail. It's a bit of an experiment. A prototype, perhaps...
This idea -- and specifically, using certain Reaper orcs -- has been in my head for a while. I've had some ideas about my Althammer setting and campaign, too. And I've been thinking about a few different ideas for some more minor players and also the "historical" context. Eventually I'll write a bit of my own, but for now, an excerpt from WFRP "Marienburg: Sold Down the River" for some of the inspiration.A cool passage of fluff. Much cooler than the W:AoS crud.QuoteBut sometime after the departure of the Elves and the Dwarfs and before the arrival of Man, Chaos and evil came, spreading like a cancer from the north and the south. I suggest you give it a whirl without the pressure pot. If you can't make anything usable, then you've learnt something, if you get a 10-20% reject rate how much does it matter? If it's much quicker than sculpting each from scratch, that's probably all that counts?
Looks like the tail on the Fimir Noble has more a triangular cross section than a round one?
023 I have that ogre miniature from Tre Manor myself. Its an awesome sculpt. With regards to size, it is just a tiny bit larger than the GW ogre bulls. I hope this helps.
I have moved on to using a pressuure pot, but I started without it. For less mess, i really recommend a drop mold style. I found that 2 sided molds often resulted in a mess.
For silicone, i prefer TAP's clear vs Oomoo. It's more forgiving by far, which helps for massaging bubbles out. Being clear, you can also see if there are bubbles in the first place when help up to the light.
For Resin, any would work. 20min work times are super helpful if you find any errors while pouring or need to clean up any spills.
Anyways, hope this helps and is clear. Also, i cant stress this enough, wear disposable gloves and clothes you dont care about when casting!
I may just scale down to a few figures using all one-off sculpted bits.
I am in if you are looking for volunteers :)
I quite like the idea of playing a wargame without knowing all the rules and stats, it becomes more like a role-playing game and less like chess.
QuoteI may just scale down to a few figures using all one-off sculpted bits.
I recommend Mordheim as a game system. Have you seen this site?

One of the warbands is Lords of the Marsh...
Great job on the Dwarf gun. :::cheers:::
That's half the game really, just experimenting. I started leathercrafting a few years back and I can safely say the first dozen or so projects where a series of terrible errors because I just didn't know the little trick for this or that. Practice really does make perfect.
Your stuff there is looking fantastic.
Looking good there! :eusa_clap:
Out of interest, did you check any mold-making how-to-do's in the web, and were they any use for you?
When can I quit my day job and just paint, convert, and sculpt minis all day long?
Any time you like! :::cheers:::
Oh, you meant AND be able to afford food? Not so easy.
I will have to explore that further. I didn't see the warband immediately, but will have to look into it more.
Are you kidding? Of course you should! Once again, you underestimate your own talent :) I'd be very happy with any of those, even if head E looks a bit squished.
Feet would also be good: I think making feet seems hard too. And if you're doing tails too, well... :icon_wink:
I'd buy some, probably a dozen, and don't care if they're alittle different from one to the next, it's biology!
I might even pay ya to paint them for me, they look awesome!
OK, so when I'm ready to start cranking out resin, I'll probably do a small amount of extra heads, tails, and feet for trade/sale.Excellent! :icon_cool:
I was refering to just painting the parts, I could then put them into some converted bodies.I'd buy some, probably a dozen, and don't care if they're alittle different from one to the next, it's biology!I do like variety, that's what I'm after. I do like some troops/units/figures to be more uniform -- when appropriate. But for something like this, I like the look of an irregular horde or mob of individuals. As far as painting, I have actually considered converting & painting some for sale, but that would be a long way off, unless something happens with my schedule in the near future.
I might even pay ya to paint them for me, they look awesome!
The village matron affectionately known as “Ma Khorne” started the village orphanage after her husband, “Pop Khorne,” recently met his unfortunate and explosive demise on the wrong end of an Imperial fire mage and a halfling hotpot full of butter . In anger and sorrow (but mostly anger) she turned to the convent of the Sisters of Perpetual Bloodshed, where she has assumed the role of caretaker and disciplinarian (strict disciplinarian) of the village children whose parents have died or mutated to such a degree that they can no longer care for their own young. Here is Ma Khorne with Oswald, one of the adorable young tykes under her care.
The silicone you used in the class looks similar to what use as my main mold material. It looks like that after it ages.

Nice to see Kermit based,
Im looking forward to seeing the new Fomorian painted up how are you gonna base it? If I can give an idea for the future, I think a frog spear would fit their swampy theme.
If I recall, this one is all based around setting your figures in motion northwest of Marienburg, and the idea was to have multiple types of figures to develop story and games.
How many are you looking at for the unit?
Oh wow, Troll Outpost have re-appeared? I bought their lovely Vampire Lord model ages ago (I recently used the horse for my Vampire Lady!) and then lost track of them. Thanks for pointing that out. :) That Swamp Folk chappy looks ideal, if the size works out.
16 of these guys sounds like a challenge, but not too extreme. Not so many that you will hate doing the last few, which is important in my eyes.
I don't suppose it's as easy as Reaper doing some unarmoured orcs, too? That would be nice...
The eyes are unfortunately sculpted like that. I'm thinking about going back and filling in the center/pupils and then repainting them black. And definitely thinking about a gloss varnish on the whole thing, too.
I had wanted to add some long whip like antennae, but there was no good place to put them because of the big pincers. There are some mouth-bits that were painted pale yellow-tan, but I'm wondering if the giant pincers might look good in that color too. Or that could disastrously draw more attention to the head. Maybe I will edit that into the pic (once I'm back in front of a computer with Phnotoshop and a better pointing device instead of my Chromebook...) before painting it for real, to see what it's like.
I love it your Fimirs, one day I would also make small Fimir army, not more then 5k points :engel:
OMG! Please tell me you made that by molding real broccoli? :eusa_clap:
Does the broccoli hint to a possible Jolly Green Giant?
Also struggling with my back recently - my hobby posture doesn't help, I often find myself bent double over something I'm concentrating on!
That's a lovely clan of giant-kin you've got now - is the furry one a GW yhettee or what? Looks particularly interesting.
Thanks for the extra water terrain pics.
Do you have any of the bridge pieces?
I have really struggled with bridges, so just make use of the fjords I built into it.
The halberdiers look great. I look forward to seeing the rural militia they should provide some neat painting and modeling opportunities
Very nice testing figures!I don't know which 'left' and 'right' you mean but the guy with the leveled weapon is a pike posture, and the one at 45 degrees less so. I've done a bit of pike drill in time. There 45 degrees posture is better for a halberdier I think.
For the poses i have to say that the first one on the left is good to go while the other one has still a "pike" position. But he's OK :icon_wink:
Very glad (and a little guilty) that I manage to shirk real responsibility and keep my life quite simple
You Americans are spoiled with hobby space. I'm just drooling when I see the various attics and man-caves gamers from the States present in their blogs and videos. Our small Nordic houses usually lack it (there was a study on the matter: our flats are smaller), so we're accustomed to build & paint where we can, and always tidy up when done, to free space for other aspects of life.
It's doable, it's enjoyable. You will eventually manage the downgrade of hobby space. It could give you more reason to visit your local stores/clubs, which should be positive, shouldn't it.
At any rate, we've got a strange, small house. I do plan on working out some sort of more humble painting space, but haven't figured out how to do it yet. It's doable, it's enjoyable. You will eventually manage the downgrade of hobby space. It could give you more reason to visit your local stores/clubs, which should be positive, shouldn't it.
The primary problem is that I don't usually have any free time until long after stores close. The secondary problem is that I have very different taste in gaming from most of the people I've met at stores. (More competitive/tournament. I did that for quite a while, but got burned out.)
Classic old school stuff! How about printing the cards with empty stay boxes and laminating them so you can fill them in with a white board marker? Yeah, it takes a few mins but gamers like live dice rolls.
My gaming buddy loves giants, he has most of the Citadel classics, I'm sure he had plans for a similar all-Giant force / game, I'll see if he's got anything written down.
I think you are a bit too hard on yourself (and the no-longer savager orcs). Your paint job will bring them together and can also mellow out their chiselled physique. I agree on the weapons but, that's an easy conversion.
HOWEVER, what about the digit divide? i.e. fimir should have three fingers and toes but the savages have four! Maybe you could fuse the middle and ring fingers with judicious use of green stuff? The Fimm on the right has pretty fat fingers after all.
Nice to see this project going forward!
I think your only "problem" is that the new plastics will look way better than the classic metal ones. While charming, the classic ones are rather one-dimensional and "flat" sculpts compared to Reaper and new GW. At least that Citadel Fimir on the right, in the photo above.
Are they on 40mm square bases?
I was looking at the ones Westfalia are working on, and they look tiny compared to yours.
I think once you do some weapons swaps you'll feel much better about them, this is your chance to give one of them a giant frog spear.
They look really good so far. Are you planning on a mixed unit with old minis, or their own unit? I think they fit the style and posing of your character model, rather than the old school GW. They look modern and great!
Good work they look tough. Got any interesting ideas for bases?
Just caught upon the Fimir. Bloomin' lovely. The frog spear is great, the rest too. (I refuse, however, to believe that the skaven hands exist. It would be silly to believe in their hands if I don't believe in the rest of them.)
Yes it does. I think I'm just getting burned out from not getting a break. The hour or so of late night time to myself in the attic was my last option to "recharge" and de-stress. (Not just the painting, I haven't been on my bike, or out hiking/camping in years, etc.) So it's more like I'm constantly on the go until I'm exhausted and pass out at the end of the day. I'm also not as young as I once was.
As for the rest wait until you are in your 60's you will have the all time you want to paint, but you will not have the eyesight, the steady hands, joints that don't ache when sitting in one position for a length of time, and the memory of where you put the bottle of paint and the brush that you want.
Still painting is the best de-stressor that I have found.
Agreed with everyone else on painting being a great destresser, even though I'm pretty terrible at it.
ha! the faux warhammer armies pages are awesome! Is there an app for that?
Or more to the point is there a simple one click solution to make the photos look like drawings?
Zero - Have a look in the Other Manufacturers Thread ...................... or here :engel:

Lovely, takes me back to the days when you could paint an army in only one year! ;)
The big guys at the back are Imperial ogres.
Did you have the baggage train painted too?
Crazy thing is I didn't know there were imperial ogres. What version did they appear in. I love 'em!
I like painting them much more than I like constructing them.
Here's what's hitting the road for Oldhammer USA Day 2016. Plus the baggage train. It's been so long, I have no idea how they will do. I'm counting on at least going out looking flashy, if nothing else.
Out of curiosity, how many points is the army?
I have the two on the right. I always liked the single picture one you showed also.
Cool. That gives me something to shoot for when I'm done with school & can get back to painting. I've always read the ally rules the same as you (if only one unit, then champion can be contingent commander). As mercenaries, I think Ogres had slightly different rules (can't remember them now).

What are you using for sacks?I have picked up a variety over time.
Awesome carts (and barrels). Outside of going to a very special event, is there a US supplier for Renedra stuff? They make some cool fences too but transatlantic shipping is not appealing.
I have some Hirst Art moulds so made some.
I have bought the odd blister at a show, which seem to be resin version of Hirst Art moulds.
Ainsty Castings do a lot of decent bits and pieces which I have ordered from them.

Cannot see your pictures for some reason.
I.C. 2439. Marienburg. The hobbit convoy was halted outside the walls of Marienburg. Guards and teamsters all were a bit impatient with the delay. It wasn’t just the idle time -- being forced to wait in the Cursed Marshes outside the Suid Gate had made even the animals jittery.
The job wasn’t one without it’s dangers. Roads through the Wasteland were more dangerous than those of the Empire or Bretonnia. Trade most commonly passed along the waterways. But there were no navigable rivers from the Little Country to the City of Gold, just streams, marshes, moors, and a good quality road through uncertain country.
They were working under contract to an ambitious hobbit looking to trade the region's produce, especially it’s famed sausage, to the larger markets of Marienburg. The people of the Little Country -- man and hobbit alike -- were rustic folk. Although they engaged in trade with merchants of Bretonnia, Reikland, and even (rarely) the dwarfs of Grey Mountains, they usually relied on the foreigners to come to them. Nob was the first hobbit (as far as anyone knew) to make the effort to market the communities’ wares directly to the outside world. He argued that by travelling to Marienburg, he could command a better price, and in the process employ some of the restless or ambitions youth of the Country in his venture as well.
The promises of mild peril and moderate profit worked. A significant train of wagons and an adequate force of guards had signed on for Scrobbleton’s Jackrabbit Trading Company’s first undertaking. And it had gone well. Better than expected, in fact. Flush with silver, and with the promise of further expeditions, most of the profit (after food and drink) was spent on new equipment -- better wagons, larger draft animals, heavier arms and armour.
This second trip to Marienburg had gone just as well so far -- until they had reached the gates, that is. This time they were barred from entering the city. Only Nob, along with his master of books, Will Smallroot, and a pair of personal guards, were granted entry to meet with the authorities. Now it was past first supper, and uncertainty was leading to disquiet. There was little room to pitch camp outside the city walls, and the landscape was pretty miserable to begin with. Rumors of marsh beasts large enough to swallow a hobbit whole were well known.
Minutes after a Bretonnian caravan had passed by the hobbits and entered the gates, Milo Greycap, one of Nob’s guards, emerged from the tall reeds to the west of the road.
“We need to leave. The master’s been taken, so has Will. I snuck out the gate but they will be coming for the wurst. Maybe us too.”
His comrades stood silent and dumbfounded.
“I don’t know everything. I was waiting down the hall. Through the door I overheard something about contraband, mushrooms, and the corruption of Marienburg’s youth. If we don’t get out of here, I don’t know what will happen. We need to leave now.”
More dumbfounded stares.
“Marienburg dungeons serve three meals of fishy broth with old roots a day, that’s it.”
The caravan became a rapid and precise maneuver as wagons were turned around, ranks were formed, and the entire party began a brisk march South.
As the walls began to disappear in the distance and growing darkness, a distant voice was heard, “Stop! Hold the wagons!” followed by a whiney blast from a horn. The hobbits pace quickened.Campaign

I like!
I'm right with you on the eternal struggle. I'll get moods were I'm practically obsessive about an idea or unit and work on them non stop. Then 24 hours pass and I've lost all interest in them. But wait, another idea is starting to grow...
Terrible puns AND classical references? Love it :)
Orcs in puff and slash still look weird to me. But if ever i was going to like them, it would be when you paint them!
My logic is that orcs like bashing skulls. What if a particularly smart (for an orc) and talented skull-basher realized that not only could he spend his days bashing skulls AND get paid for it...? Or what if some enterprising non-orc managed to act in an advisory/management role for said skull-bashers...?
Moe, Larry Curly and Shemp are alive and well. You really should attend to Otto & Max. I would not tolerate servants who lie so easily. My Customer Service Ogres have travelled east to attend to some family business. My last letter from Moe indicates that they intend to relocate their kin to Nordland to serve in Theodoric's Army (for a price). They will be coming through Kislev and would be happy to pay respect to your ashes.
Anyway the Kev Adams Mercenary Ogres and Orcs collection for Foundry are alive and well, and have seen a resurgence of late as Foundry have hunted out all the old moulds.
I had been collecting them for over 12 years, first picking up some blisters in bargain boxes at Salute where you got them at Ł4 each blister and buy 5 get 6th one free; and that was when the Ogres were packed in twos, and the Orcs in 3's. Now they start around Ł6 each and go up from there .........................

I need 4 to complete the collection, and Foundry have them, but I can wait for a deal or a sale :engel:
Those skeletons alongside the other figures look like some sort of extinct branch of humans/ogres/half giants. Maybe they are an ancient force of a race long since past, back from the dead to terrorize the descendants of those who killed them off.
For 2 bucks why not.
Cut one down to size to fit with the ogres and add some greenstuff shredded clothes?
"Remove the lower part of the spine..."
That's it! Know your thinking like a pain boy
I put the final paint a dwarf who was over half painted for ages. A bit rushed looking, though, which is a shame since it's one of my converted classic models. -- --

I really like the dwarf zweihander conversion - I have a few of the original marauder dwarfs that are slightly damaged and could be reborn like that.

Going back to your mention of Kings of War in November -what list are you using with your Marienburgers.
I have had a couple of games with the League of Rhordia - basically as an excuse to use halflings, but the human armies are very difficult to work the old Imperial Ogres into as there don't seem to be Large Infantry listings. ( I have added some of the Westfalia ones to my collection recently and they work quite well).
I suppose I might need to try some form of alliance, but then you probably need more than the single unit or two I want to take.
I suppose the idea of the small halflings combining with large Ogres, and leaving out the middle size humans is possibly entertaining. :engel:
If I read correctly you have 6 of each sort (Imperial and Warmonger), so do you run them in 3s or 4s ?
Oh, snowman! Even though we live in Finland, we haven't yet built a snowman this year. A shame, since there have been three snows in the south already.
What is the dwarf supposed to wear? His jacket, is it a wool slipover? The conversion is ace! :-)
You mentioned Ral Partha Halflings. Do you mean those really old, 1979-1982? They're totally tiny! But also quite nice sculpts. I have hard time deciding what to do with those. They're about 3-year olds in 28mm...
So leave them. See how it feels, You can always go back and paint them in later if it really bothers you.
I stockpiled Foundation paints when they were withdrawn from sale, but I know they won't last forever.

I stockpiled Foundation paints when they were withdrawn from sale, but I know they won't last forever. It's a problem. I have ended up hand-mixing the turquoise for my Space Marine army because new pots of paint don't match the 25 year old pot I painted the first few units with. Definitely a lesson to learn there... chances are the dregs of the brown you are using won't look exactly like a new one anyway, sorry! :(
Garagehammer sounds wonderful, you need to do that just so I can be jealous of you! :eusa_clap:

I don't even paint 28mm without a magnifying lamp anymore. When I go to the homes of my different nephews to spend time painting with them, I tote my magnifying lamp with me. I can't stand what my figures look like when painting without it, and it is much harder to paint the figures without the bright light and magnification combo.

Jealous? I thought you're crashing my Year of Gaming in 2021. I'm going to hold you to that.
Starting to write down more concrete info for my long term campaign project. Inspired after finally starting to paint up my Westfalia halfmen (and a painting & collecting a handful of other hobbity folk) I've taken my first shot at a hobbit-centric WFB3 list...More Althammer goodness there! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

This idea is so freakin cool it's amazing. The JTC is a brilliant idea. This goes with your fluff about the escorted shipment and possible internment of its guards an so freakin on!!! Edit : Still patiently waiting for next instalment but understanding the load you bare.
Sorry, I get a little excited with these great concepts 😺
Surely the badge of the Jackrabbit Trading Company will include a rabbit? This army needs rabbits, lots of them. Uncountable rabbits... what's the word I'm looking for...? :icon_wink:
Looking good. Was going to suggest that Broomstick Bill should be the unit champion, but you've got that covered. I like how he stands out - perhaps all your Heroes dress to their own tastes?
(Glad the skellies arrived ok, that's a good match.)
These halflings look very good, I'm wondering how they would fit in my Mordheim warband.
:smile2:These halflings look very good, I'm wondering how they would fit in my Mordheim warband.
Probably very well ........... at a lower level. :closed-eyes:
They seem a little smaller then the ones from White Knight and GW, or am I mistaken?

You are :engel:
Puffy clothing will make GW and WK ones look 'fatter'.
Very nice. 023 can you give me a breakdown of the colors you used for your fimir flesh please as I like the tone and would like to imitate it for the few fimir I got?
Those are very cool conversions. Is the head made from scratch or did you start off from something ?
Ooh, more painted Fimir! Still in love with these guys, you've got a nice band of them together, now. :eusa_clap:
I'm on a quest for half-orcs. I want them as mercenaries for various factions. The idea being they are effective, or at least adequate, but sort of a last-choice option. Sort of like employing pirates, bandits, etc. I've got some generally olsdschool aesthetics in mind.
is the unassembled resin in the bag a forge world bone grinder?
Old Grenadier had some, and at least Mirliton still sells them:
http://www.mirliton.it/index.php?cName=fantasy-2528mm-half-orc (http://www.mirliton.it/index.php?cName=fantasy-2528mm-half-orc)
These are better sculpts than some others in the Grenadier Fantasy Warrior line. They might still be a bit small, more in the 25mm or 28mm 'real scale' line. I can do a comparison photo, if you think you're interested.

I like the sculpts, but I've been looking elsewhere mostly because of the cost compared to most of the other options. I also wish there was a little more variety. (Though that seems to be a problem with every range I look at. I will probably end up mixing a lot of brands.)
Are there any giant models out there that look like:
1 - a decent cyclops
2 - a bit like the titan from Heroes 3?
Looking good, nice work on the tartan. Your BIG collection is definitely moving painting Giants up my to do list!
(It's a long list though, as you know!)
The Fimm look awesome, its nice to see them in their full glory, saw a battlemasters Fimir yesterday and thought of you :biggriin:
I had that box of halflings when I was younger. Might still be hiding in my parents attic!
We had much fun with those figures. :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
Thank you, all!
Thanks. I don't actually have one of those! I even passed up the chance to get a bunch of them. I'm rethinking my decision now. I should at least have one, for completeness. :icon_redface:
Just to think I gave away all my D&D figures about 30 years ago.
My earliest gaming was chess, followed by board wargames from Avalon Hill and SPI, some 54mm AWI, Alamo, ACW, and WW2 figures, and then some Airfix Napoleonics. In junior high I started with some basic D&D roleplaying followed by AD&D, slowly acquiring some 25mm figures from Grenadier and Ral Partha. My painting started in 4th grade with the 54mm AWI doing a replica of the Concord North Bridge fight for a school project. I used Testors and railroad hobby paints, and eventually some Citadel metals, too. For the roleplaying we used graph paper for maps, GM having one, players slowly having it revealed to them on a different sheet. In college there were various new games and systems experienced, but I then gave them up my last two years for focus on other things. There are plenty of memories from those good ole days, much fun in playing and story creation, too.I had that box of halflings when I was younger. Might still be hiding in my parents attic!:::cheers:::

We were playing AD&D and I picked up Battlesystem to play some big games. They were played on a friend's vinyl tiled basement floor. All the terrain was drawn out with masking tape like a topographical map and a few model train trees. We used the cardboard chits that came with the game, as well as the TWO lead figures. I really fell in love with the lead. I painted up those two figures (a knight and an orc) with my dad's Testors enamel paints, and we hunted down more: the box of halflings, a couple of Grenadier ogres, two generic super-heroes, and the Grenadier "Dragon of the Month" red dragon (or red dragon II?) and some Dark Horse miniatures were some of the first I remember. They were all the local comic book shop had. We cleaned them out & started seeking out more from wherever we could find them. Discovered gaming conventions -- mostly for RPGs -- but ended up playing in a big Chaos Wars game. Thus discovered Ral Partha, played Chaos Wars for a while. In the course of the Quest for Lead a couple of friends and I took a trip to a semi-distant (for a couple of young teens at the time) mall train & model shop where they had some boxed Citadel Regiments of Renown. Half of them were either on clearance or mis-priced. One guy got Skarlock's archers, another got the Skeleton Horde, and me -- flush with the profits of newspaper delivery -- I picked up everything else: Harboths & Ruglud's orcs, Imrick's & Bugman's dwarfs, and the Nightmare legion. One of the other guys (I think Skarlock) also spotted a bigass (compared to the other games) rulebook: Warhammer Fantasy Battles (3rd ed.) and bought it as well. Thus... we were hooked.
At least that's the hasty version. We played some other games, like Battletech & Car Wars, a well. And somewhere in there, I had started picking up White Dwarf alongside Dragon magazine too...
Damn, that's all like a century ago. :icon_lol:
At any rate... fun times, and I still have most -- but not all -- of those original halflings. Some were mine, some were given to me by the friend I originally split the pack with. Just a year or two ago I stripped most of them with the intention of repainting. But it was always nagging at me that I was missing a couple of them. So it's good to have the full set again. I'm debating selling/trading off the duplicates, though.
@GP - chess and then war games- same here. Avalon Hill Bliztkrieg with the pink and blue chits and AH submarine. Believe it or not, I just got rid of them last year except for the submarine board which I keep for Pirates. SPI games by the bucketload and of course a subscription. Learned more about military history in that period than anywhere else. You can still get 3 different versions of strategy and tactics still. So as not to clutter up 023's thread here with more such discussion, I started this thread over here ...
oh wow never heard of these guys :::cheers::: :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
This one...

But yours works better, and looking at it is surely a resculpt of the unit leader?!
023 I know this might be much to ask but can you please tell me about the colours you used on the plumage of the owl griff and how you went about painting it as I love the scheme lots and would like to copy it for a griffon I have...
Owlgryph's seem better than griffons, would they be nocturnal?
This has nothing to do with this immediate thread but as soon as I saw it I thought 023!

Much of that background depends on what Orcs are. In LotR, they are broken elves - and so are, essentially, Dark Elves in the WFB setting. They can breed with humans - they are genetically compatible (although such terms would not be used, of course).
If that is the case, then ostracized individuals could gather together and communities could grow up. Perhaps they breed prolifically.
If Orcs are a fungoid/mammal symbiote, then a human being infected with the fungus could be a "half orc" and so the communities are the result of infection or eating particular things.
It might also be that "half-orc" is less precise a term than we think - it could be a whole mis-mass of ostracized individuals of various kinds and lineages which band together for protection.
Individual army books gave more scope to develop the character of races and armies, with heavier stereotyping and less overlap.
A shame, because the Warhammer Armies book 023 uses is in many ways the zenith of Warhammer army design.
Very, very nice! And with a name and all, too. Looking forward to more mercenary mongrel mixtures :eusa_clap:
Re Photobucket, I have a stay of execution until August 2018 as I'm already a subscriber (at the lowest level). Are you now posting images from your blog or something like that (my grasp of these things is limited)? Maybe this is the impetus to start a blog that I've always lacked?
Your affection for half-orcs is taking over a bit. No more of the fimir in the pipeline?
Are the halflings wearing goblin skin shirts? That would be a turn around! ;)
I admire your geen skin tone, how colors you use?
I love follow your topic, It 'a mine of beautiful models to be admired
I admire your geen skin tone, how colors you use?
Cheap US craft paints. Americana brand. I forget the exact colors, but something like Dark Avacodo, Light Avacodo, etc. But I also use a thin black wash to start it off sometimes.... :|
Glad it's working out :) There's a lot of differences working with Bones, it's very different from other materials and I learn something new with every model it seems... worth the hassle for the much cheaper models, and the size of what they are doing now... wow!
I mever undeestood the pose of the steed for that wightlord model. It always looked so awkward.
Thanks for the offer. I should clarify, I'm looking for 25x50 cavalry bases with a single, central slot - if anyone even makes those. Otherwise, I will have to go with plan B. Or C.
This version of the plastic skeletons are big fellas which take up a lot of space. There are only a few in my army and they make the Mantic ones look a bit wimpy.
These look nice again. Every time you post up a regiment my resolve to never paint big fantasy armies again is tested...
Do like the colour of your Orcs, very LOR's and grubby as an orc should be.
Colours on that cauldron are stunning, any chance on sharing how you painted it ?
That's an interesting idea. I never thought of painting skeletons any colour other than off-white
They're finished black? Or that's the gray + black ink undercoat we've seen a couple of times before?
Where is the Necromancer figure from? Never seen it. Very characterful and superbly painted! :-)
for a little levity you could do a unit of USO skeletons to entertain the troops during the holidays, of course they would have to be painted red, as in Red Skeleton the famous comedian, or you could do a unit of pink and purple skellies that have come out of the closet...... or how about some moldy green bones? I bet with a beer or two I could come with more (not necessarily better) ideas,,,, I also want to say that I am enjoying your posts and work tremendously, thank you for sharing. steveb
An undead owl bear?
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the tower
Mo' was reciting incantations of power;
The corpses were waiting, at the end of the stair,
In hopes that Dellamorte soon would be there...

love them, give them off white teeth, so that when they attack in the dark or otherwise it would be more scary, also it would make the dark appear to be more dark by comparison, really love them must copy.... steveb
Merry Christmas!
Thanks! Here's a link to the kickstarter we were referring to ...
I'm not sure what KS you guys are talking about. I've mostly been ignoring zombie stuff in favor of skeletal stuff. As far as animals, I know I've seen some around but can't really point you in the direction of any off the top of my head. Other than that owl-bear, which really looks a bit more zombie than skeleton.
What an awesome conversion, and great painting as well! Not relevant to what I was looking for, but I had to share. Click the link to check out the whole process and more photos.
Does this happen to belong to someone here? (If so, I must have missed it in the forum.)
The female wizard conversion is so extensive I wonder if some other body wouldn't have served as the base. There must be more female caster figures in a very similar pose. Then again, that conversion is exactly what I'd do! :)
That said I did use a metal model for my grey wizard (http://beardbunker.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/empire-battle-wizards-now-with.html), and a resin model for my amber wizard (http://beardbunker.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/empire-battle-wizards-now-with-bangles.html). Those were much less ambitious, though!
Welcome to the forum Charlie!
Welcome to W-E, and enjoying the wizard conversions on your site. :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
Welcome, Charlie!
More cool models - and I wouldn't necessarily say less ambitious, considering how you redid nearly the complete surfaces of the models with greenstuff. More traffic from this site, that's sure. :-)
Welcome Charlie! Cool blog you have indeed. (Almost a yoda tone to the last line 😸)
Glad to see you show up. You may see some traffic from the Lead Adventure forum too. I usually duplicate my posts in both places.
As I've said -- I love the conversion (and paint) on that figure. Totally transformed the figure, and to be honest, I like your conversion better than the original.
Them Ogres are nice. Like the mix of races. What size are they compared to human skeleton.
On of my little bugs. When a Necromancer raise's his dead from a battlefield how come they are all human?
You’ve probably seen these guys but regarding your liking for skellies, you would do these justice. They are the shadespire models.
Glorious!! I have to say the JTC is an inspiration of yours that I’ve been waiting to see. I am glad to see so much progress on the ‘heavy hitters’.
You mention solo gaming. That’s all I do at the moment and it sounds a bit weird but I really enjoy it. It does get that itch out of the system. Because of my room size I had to decrease from 4x6 to 3x5 which is actually too small but it’s all I can work with.
Here it is if you scroll thru.

The short version is that the necromancer, Maurice, uses his skeletons for night raids & terror attacks. The idea being that they're harder to see (and even more frightening) when painted/charred black, and the skeletons have an advantage as they don't need the daylight to "see" the same way as humans and similar diurnal creatures.
I seem to remember the ability to have a troll army with a troll king. A friend of mine in deep river made such an army. It was glorious. Is something similar going to happen here like your giant army?

You are incredibly productive! What will you play your one-eyed freaks as? Ogres?
wow you are a machine sir :::cheers:::
The Goat Knights look splendid, but yes, a big banner would really set them off. Nice to see a cavalry unit which isn't crammed knee to knee onto too small bases, as well.
Looking forward to Big April! I've got a really busy music schedule this month (I'm hosting two gigs, as well as going to loads), so I don't think I'll be attempting my Heresy giant just yet, but I've put my own Ogre with flail on the painting desk so I can try to join in a little bit :)

If you don’t want that head...
That female giant is pure uncanny valley. :biggriin:
Must be from his youngster's toy box. :icon_wink:
This Barbie giant makes me.. makes me... I don't know what I feel!! :icon_lol:
Quote 023: carrying hammers the size of a refrigerator,Are you scaling the walls whilst simultaneously rotating your head 360' and projectile vomiting green fluid?
Couldnt stop chuckling. The wife is looking at me like Im possessed. Maybe I am 😺

The giant is looking really good, love the skin tones. And *always* choose a stout or porter! :::cheers:::
"Your mother paints minis in hell! Blargh blargh blargh!"
I do love those ogres. Great paint job too! It's weird, as I have never bought any ... I think the price and the fact I have too much to paint already has put me off!

Lots of character. He looks not mad or evil, just enjoying what he does. It’s good to like your work 😸
THis giant is amzing. Make me want to buy one for my O&G army :closed-eyes:
Sorry to crash your thread too - do you know of any decent roman or greek style giants? Pose similar to the old giant in the comparison picture above?
What about any decent Cyclops?
Wow they look awesome :::cheers::: When will these get released or when does the kickstarter start?
And where's that human figure in the middle come from :icon_question:
Please don't sell them 023! Great collection...Wow they look awesome :::cheers::: When will these get released or when does the kickstarter start?
Kickstarter was funded years ago, they are still sending the miniatures. Yeah it sounds awkward; I didn't participate, but I've bought Spartans and Amazons from their online store and can assure their stuff is f***king amazing! And where's that human figure in the middle come from :icon_question:
From the same company, Crocodile Miniatures.
Beautiful!👆
I wonder if he would like a gummi bear instead?
At the risk of being a little off topic & incurring mod-wrath... ...a couple of links below. I've got a bit of a financial issue, so I'm going through my games/minis & reluctantly listing a few things for sale...

wow that's nice: have you seen the giants from Bones? their nice and like $12
Considering I have a yet to be touched Fimir army I want to start, to see you selling yours does bring me sadness, but I cannot commit any wrath on you for the enjoyment and inspiration you have brought.
That giant is friggin' disturbing. Reminds me of the monsters from the Attack on Titan anime.

My son watched that anime and gave me continual updates. I think a game went with it as well if I remember correctly.
What is it?
I could google, but I'd prefer to hear the story of 'jackalope' and the miniature from you. :)
-Z
Any other interpretation of the jackapole is just lies.
Jackalope's! Why they're the most feared creature on the Great Plains. Some claim they are just harmless amalgamation of hare and antelope but the truth is they are veracious flesh eating demon beasts that ride the lightning. A single jackalope can eat its way through a hundred head of steer in the span of a thunderclap. Its right to fear the lightning on the plains for the jackalope may be coming. But all is not lost, listen for the rolling thunder, for the rolling thunder heralds the Thunderbird the natural predator of the jackalope.
Any other interpretation of the jackapole is just lies.
Awesome. Where can I get one of those jackalopes from? or is that your own conversion?
Any other interpretation of the jackapole is just lies.
The WHAT?
A while back there was a small miniature company that made a few Americana folklore miniatures like squonks, jackelopes, hodags etc... Anybody have a clue if its still around I can't find them on the googlenets anymore and I dont see anything other then the jackelope on the stonehaven site.?
Looking at their web site a few more times, I've become fond of several of their minis. I just wish they were more affordable!
At some point I need this one...

Lovely work!
I really love the purple (almost deep purple). What colours do you use for it?
Seriously, no more buying minis the rest of the year. :engel:

When I read your message I immediately thought in a Giant that has been not released yet, coming from the Crocodile Miniatures crowdfunding. Special Cyclops charm here.

Those bad boys look rad!
Nice! So good I'm *almost* tempted to paint a regiment again. Almost.
I've been meaning to ask you about bases. For the last 5 years plus I've been carefully removing cast-on bases to fit models on to my fancy resin bases. I wouldn't ever do that to, say, 100 classic 35 year old Orcs. Do you just glue yours to the bases and then use your scatters over the top, or is there an intermediate stage? I can't tell from your finished models! (which is something I'd like to achieve!)
Love the kitty cavalry!
That half orc looks more worried about being a cat treat than taking on the enemy 😺
These were originally part of Rieder Design's Dungeon Dwellers range. There used to be lots of adverts for that range in White Dwarf in the early 80s. A lot of them hold up very well - especially the "Homus Hyena" gnolls (you can see one half-painted here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=77384.0;attach=77606;image)).
I think the hobgoblins were one of the later Rieder releases. Their armour is very similar to Aly Morrison's C36 hobgoblins (released in 1984), so that could be an influence. But it might just be "parallel evolution" from the Monster Manual illustrations.
How is no one commenting on the freaking Toe you made? That thing is creepy.
The shaman is a bit short, but at least the squatting pose gives an excuse for that.
My Drew trolls just arrived yesterday. They came with a couple of extra heads - so Im going to look into converting up at least one additional troll.
Nice artillery. A bit small to be killing multiple ranks of Knights with, but then Notlob's machines were no bigger back in the day.
I suppose Mo has no use for a standard bearer or musician, what with the stealth night attacks thing. I guess there'd maybe be scope for a living assistant (he's probably too low level to have a full apprentice) if you wanted to add further colour to the unit...
Had a couple hours before my flight home, so got a chance to visit the Alamo for the first time.

2: The Mrs skeleton toy I was referring to was Shriek from the short lived Skeleton Warriors franchise [the cartoon was about a beefy guy with a magic sword who routinely fought a skeletal villain. It reminds me of something else for some reason]
Thanks for sharing the picture of the Curtis Jenny, a great looking plane! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
A few of things I need to say
1:I have to ask. Is Notlob's name a palindrome of Bolton and a reference to the Monty Python dead parrot skit?
Zerotwentythree your from Ohio right? Have you ever gone to the the Air Force Museum down at Dayton? They have tons of early planes on display. They just restored the Memphis Belle. I usually take my son down there once a year. We'll spend 4 to 5 hours there everytime we go. Best of all its free.
Quick, someone convince me I dont need this for a bit of terrain in the coastal marshes around Marienburg! :icon_eek:
Like the newest bog creatures! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
I vaguely recall the Grenadier Giant spider from my younger years. :icon_cool:
I find myself endlessly repairing spiders...
Eeek! No spiders for me, even the least spidery 1980s model sets off my phobia.
Looking brilliant! I never minded spiders. I liked having them around.
I like the elves, and their leader, really like how he is painted, excellent. :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
Are you after specific shields? I have A LOT of shields...
These are the ancient oneposer plastics? You've done them really well! :eusa_clap:
Having the different colors reminds me of how 023 painted his Marienburg army. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
Are you after specific shields? I have A LOT of shields...
Been trying to find some of the newer embossed elf shields. I think there were several different sets. Harder than I thought it would be. Would like to save my plain shields for other purposes. The sea elves have been a long-lingering project, so I'm not rushed. To be honest, I'm happy the figures are finally getting paint on them at all. :icon_lol:
Love that chariot, it has escaped my collection because I've never really done Elves and they now change hands for Ł100+ ... maybe one day?
I love the Oathmark humans kit. I've only managed to make a few bowman so far. I can't wait to get my Forgotten Worlds Northman and maybe build some kind of Border Princes army out of them and the Oathmark guys.
Oooh! That's a good idea! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
I'm very much into the concept of the Border Princes, and I like the idea of mixing and matching various figures to make up these armies.
I have the "witch hunter" figure. I'm painting him as an Estalian dude ... black and red, maybe even yellow. He is suppose to be a mean dude.
From now on I'm just sending you ALL the miniatures. That's just gorgeous! :eusa_clap:Ha! I second that. :::cheers::: :::cheers:::
Yesterday was a shitty day, in what has already been a very stressful spring & summer (and now starting into autumn.) So for whatever reason, I (wisely) decided, "fuck it, I'm going to go paint that shield". And that was that. :-D
I'm glad I sent him to you instead of trying to flog him on ebay for Ł2! ;)
Looks superb 023 nice setting...I really wish I lived nearby
The half orc back left has a nice moustache... :)
Well done Zygmung, you spotted the "not officially a half-orc" mini
You can always throw in ogres, ogres fit everywhere in Warhammer! With the outline you've given, you could slip in anything a bit scruffy and a bit morally flexible. From an army point of view it'd be nice if you could find some sort of mounted models to fit the bill. From a background point of view, I wonder what their leadership is, what their goals are...
PS if this was D&D there would definitely be lycanthropes. Wherever part-human malcontents gather, there are were-somethings! ;)
From the ancient Goblin Raiding Party boxed set! I actually did have those as a kid, but long lost now and on my list of things to re-collect.
Really nice unit! I don't recall a 2 handed weapon unit but it’s been along time. Love the random mushrooms in amongst the forest
Looks great, I might still have some of these in a box somewhere, I forget. I'm thinking that you are painting the Elf army I always wanted in the 1980s! :eusa_clap:
Love your choice of models & the work you put into painting them. Beautiful!
In the Olden Times, the Ent at least would be giant-sized. Right? Maybe the dragon and plague too.
Loving those Wood Elves! Really like the Eagle, was that the original rider? Like him so much better than the sky surfer models released later.
Those red dudes are awesome! And they look to be on 20 mm bases meaning you could easily have a hoard of these wondrous beasties!
Seeing these Powries painted by you makes me regret I didn't join the kickstarter at the time. :-)
Nice work and nice family pic :)
I've been very lucky, i'm supplying electronics for ventilators in the UK... Lots of design and production.
Plus my wife is a nurse, so it's ok for us , but many people are falling on hard times,
Thanks for asking Z23. I'm a first responder so haven't stopped working. The wife has worked from home the whole time. Luckily our daughter is both in high school, and a highly motivated over-achiever. As such, we don't need to do anything to fit hervschool wise. I do look like a hippie... I really need to see my barber!
Models look great. My Lizardmen sit naked and grey for the sane reason. Don't know how to paint them.
Awesome work 023...also don't let anxiety get you....know that many are in your same boat, me included. Nice family cookout and also nice minis as ever....I still treasure the minis I bought from you years ago :)
The tradition of white lizardmen extends back through the Slann iteration of their lore all the way back to the infamous Karnac.
Obviously, Tom Meier is a titan of miniature making, but I've never been very keen on these guys, it's the odd oriental-but-not styling.
As for real life, I've been furloughed from work on 80% pay since Easter and looks like I'll be off tll mid July. It's a massive bonus to be able to stay home and safe and minimise the risk to my 75 year old dad AND still pay my bills, and I'm very grateful for this one thing which UK government has done right in this crisis (or the last 5 years or more, for that matter). Despite that I'm only getting about the same level of hobby work done as when I was working all day and out 2 or 3 nights a week, which is disappointing.
Fantastic stuff! I always love checking out this thread.
The other thing I bought was a bargain purchase of a resin inn from Blue Moon Manufacturing. Looks great, but trying to do a dry fit today I couldn't get the parts to align like they do in the second pic (stolen from the online shop.) Once I get that resolved and painted, I expect it will look great, though!

Heat them up with a hairdryer or in hot water. It will make them a bit more bendable to get into the right shape, then run them under a cold tap to set.
