Thanks to the venerable GP, I am off on another tangent. I did say that I was going to do this with different manufactures but try as I might, the deal gods of the gaming world are making it hard to find Viking or saxons ( the saxons I think I like better). Some good deals then the shipping sucks so I’ll move into this in a slightly different way. My old starter set still had 12 gunners (of which I will use 6) and 12 spearmen hiding out. A perfect 18 pts. The last bunch of swordsmen I bought were the newer kit. 10 never completed and the rest in my empire patchwork quilt. I just couldn’t decide on a standard provincial colour. So 12 swords for 12 pts. Gives me 30 pts and a reduced hero for 6 points - yet another warrior priest. On the antagonist side - all creatures borrowed and otherwise unfinished Deamons. My ral partha trolls will make up a reduced 12 pts, 6 unfinished Deamons will be a reduced 12 pts, 2 rat ogres at 3 pts each and the blue scribes which can’t seem to find a home in T9A lineup. They will be my 6 pt leader. 36 pts in all. Thus begins the temporary dragon movement till I round up the guys I really want.

The older empire figures are great! That's where I started with Empire.
Are you into converting? I took the first 16 spear guys, and swapped 12 of their heads for each figure to look different. If I recall, the handgunners are a bit more difficult to do that with, so be careful if ya go down that route with them.
As for doing a province, what do you have painted already, and what province are you interested in painting currently? I mostly tend to painting Averlanders, Marienburgers (different colors schemes), Wissenlanders (and maybe someday some Solanders), Stirlanders, Tileans (green, purple, and yellow, but maybe red & white too), and Matoreans (orange and blue).
-
Quote GP: and Matoreans (orange and blue).
This sounds appealing! Suits my colour palate but I know nothing of the Maroreans. I will look for heads in my bits stuff. Hopefully there are some heads rolling about.
-
I use the blue and orange swordsmen interchangeably for Matoreans (not assigned a color scheme by GW that I'm aware of currently), mercenaries, and a Marienburg merchant family. Currently they are only primed, painted orange in places, and flesh for the skin, and so more work to do on them.
-
Definite on the blue orange. No heads milling about. Lots of ork heads but I don’t think that will work. Approaching this warband a little differently this time. Decided bases first and I’m out of primer so that helped the direction.
Thinking a paler blue possibly with the ratskin orange. I have both of those colours. Keep forgetting I only need 6 handgunners for this band but looks like I’ll notch it up 6 pts.

Splendid choice of minis! My absolute favourites among the Empire rank-and-file. :-)
You say you don't have spare heads for head swaps. What you could do is carefully remove a couple of the Swordsmen heads and put them on the Pikemen/Handgunners, and then put the removed Pikemen/Handgunner heads back into the shoulders of the Swordsmen. So a real head swap. Would bring you variation.
I admire your energy. So much progress. I must have a dozen similar projects stalled on the shelf and in boxes, but at my pace it will be years to get them done. Long years to come up with new projects...

Thanks Zygmund!
That head swap is a great idea. I have some of these swordsman, 6 ed swordsman and some newer handgunners/crossbowmen that could stand some brain transplants. It’s funny the tunnel vision you can acquire in thinking something is done and untouchable because ‘it’s done’. That will be tonight’s goal and maybe some primer.
-
My idea was along the same lines as Zygmund, but only using the spearmen heads themselves for the spearmen and obtaining 16 different looking guys. It is a bunch of head swapping, but it worked for me when I did my original 16 spearmen from the 6th edition starter set, like the ones you're showing us.

Exactly! Thanks GP. The only thought that occurred was a bin of heads to choose from which didn’t exist 😸
-
After some brain salad surgery.....
That was fun and turned out no one has the same head anymore. Lots of aspirin required. Forgot to pick up primer but probably didn’t have enough time anyways.

Got em base coated. Need advice. GP came up with what I think is a splendid colour scheme of orange/blue. I have 2 oranges - army painter lava and GW ratskin. I like the ratskin personally and I have 2 blues. Fang and fenresian. I’m leaning towards the lighter grey but some input would be great. Getting very ramped about this warband.

Are there two oranges on those figures?
I like the darker blue, the lighter one looks too grey for my taste. However, orange and grey could work.

I only used the ratskin which I prefer. At first I wasn’t sure of the dark but when I woke up this morning I liked it better. I agree GP and some highlighting will go a long way. Details should be fun too.
-
Another question GP! I’m trying to decide what colours for the shields. The rim , field and lion face. For some reason I’m not getting a feeling and having a hard time. The swords are pretty unique so I can run with some differences but the round ones I think should be universal.
-
I like the orange and grey myself. The darker blue is almost a bit to dark for my tastes, but maybe with a couple of highlights it wouldn't look quite that dark.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Did some highlighting to brighten it a bit. I havnt painted empire in ages and forgot how many tubs of paint you need to go thru. I still need to find some patience with waiting for washes to dry. I always hit them to soon as can be seen with this group that are so ugly I would say even their own mothers couldn’t love them.

The shield shown could look good in white with orange and blue ribbon across the front. That'd require some patience too. :icon_wink:
When we're rushing to get a certain look, we might not get it. Go slow, consider, and then act.
-
I like 👆
The ribbon may be a challenge for sure. Maybe blue rim. But I really like the white orange. Gonna wip something up tonight.
-
Always nice to see some more Empire love. I'll be watching this project with keen interest.
-
Won’t let a little thing like my hydro pole being ripped of the house at the beginning of a weekend by 110 km winds stop the progress. Tree down, soffit and roof slightly missing. No word from hydro about repairs. No, the show must go on. I’m not wasting my night peering into the darkness and I don’t feel like reading at the moment when the next tree to come down is a 150’ poplar and that should land on the other half of the house. What to do? Paint. Flash of the camera hides the led spotlight.
Started the shields.

-
Shields are pretty much done. May add some highlights tomorrow.
Maybe a few more touch ups. Pics bring out some wonderous crap sometimes
(https://artobansghost.files.wordpress.com/2018/05/img_2030.jpg)
-
Might be good to use a brown wash over the lion heads and then highlight with the original orange. The wash will flow into things like the eye sockets, and give the shields more overall definition.
-
I have some original brown GW wash as well. Will hit it later today
-
It could be tricky getting the wash to not flow onto the white. Go slowly. :icon_wink:

No choice but slowly. Everything in the dark and no power. Check out unhappy random for complete details lol.
-
You've got me wanting to paint! And I'm thinking my Matorean's shields will also have a white field.
-
Yay!! One good turn deserves another 😸
-
About as uch touch up as I can handle 😺
Shields finished (I think)
Next handful of 8 started. Had to move upstairs for actual light till it runs out. Looks like I may not see power for a few days. Another 4000 people going thru the same thing. I may continue a bit but this light thing is a pain.

I love how these are coming out. The shields look very good!
Only comment is to next time try thinning out the white paint with water a little bit more because it will give a smoother look to them.
I also like how the figures are looking side by side like that. It make me want to paint. :::cheers:::

Thanks GP!
Good point about the white. It does look a bit globby. I am super enjoying the colour scheme here and finding it much easier to paint as opposed to red and white. I actually did more colours yesterday till the light was gone. I might have that bunch finished today.
Just ebay’d a bunch of 1/32 scale coldstream, scots Guard and mounted lifeguard. Should have about $150 to put back into the hobby. Vanguard or saxons? That wish list on lion rampant just seemed to get closer.
-
I just got reliable power back, so I'm catching up a bit.
I think everything looks great. The blue and orange is turning out very well.
-
Thanks Gankom! Just got my power back on too. Therefore......Paint!
Some more Matoreans.
Edit: forgot to highlight blue/orange on the latest.

Thanks Gankom! I’m almost done with the spider obsession. When the riders are done, it’s back to these joes.

Do it! (After the French ww1 😸)
Decided to change out the leader with an engineer that was mucking about without orders. Realized afterword he’s on a small base. Curses!

They a few colours on the rest of the team. Might complete them tomorrow.

The Matorean 1st Company. Warband complete I think. Now on to there deamon/ creature antithesis.
A rugged group of vets I beleive. They will need to be to face what’s coming.

Looking fantastic! I like the bases.
-
Thanks Gankom!
Here is the bad guys brigade. Borrowing some random creatures from other army’s but they make a mean team. All I did to these guys was fix up their bases. The blue scribes found their way here because I could not find a spot for them in T9A. So they got the round base treatment. The deamon host is just pure fun but I think their bite will be worse than their bark.

The bad boys brigade are done. 39 points and 40 for the Matoreans. Full warbands to launch at each other’s throats. Next up my first dragon rampant game. I’m actually feeling bad for the matoreans. I hope their up for it but according to their fluff, their swordsmen are equal to any empire and their spearmen are quite adept.

I think I want a hard copy of the book as well. This weekend I’m going to have a round and see how it works out ! I’ll keep you informed.

Positively freaky! I was always a fan of the old-school horrors. Such great models.

Thanks Xath! I really love these guys as well. Had some fun with bright colours. Nothing like something that looks bright and fun that can rip your head off and make you dance in a magical fire. What a great party guest 😸

Found a few converts to the bad boys brigade. 6 goblin riders from the LotR line. They will make a good 12 point (2 ea) unit of cavalry.
I can match these with my imperial knights as cavalry to balance. Just thought of that while writing. That gives me another stretch goal 😺 Also in DR there are units for monsters/creatures. Some old cold ones can come out to play. A place for everything.

Hey Artoban ... did you see the Forgotten World kickstarter campaign?
These boxes make units of 6 or 12 (or even 18 in some cases, the rabbles and zombies). Perfect for Dragon Rampant! :icon_mrgreen:

Thanks GP!
Love the northerners. Unfortunately I won’t be in a state to buy until December or January if all goes well.
-
Outstanding work!
Say, where could I read some more about these Matoreans? I was about to denounce thee a heretic and a consort to daemons before thinking that could be a misunderstanding and you don't meant to field them together *at the same side*... right? XD
-
HA!👆 thank you very much!
Not heretical thankfully 😸
I was putting them together as foes. I planned to get the ral partha shaman an leader trolls plus another stone thrower to fill out that unit and all those spare tzeentch Deamons left over from my deamon army. I have a bunch of empire knights as well. Getting stoked again to get this on the road after getting so close.
-
Matorea is a town in the Border Princes.
I've been using it as the port where my Olde World fluff family with the last name of Mardonia bases their fleet of ships from that I've had in various on-line campaigns. There is some fluff regarding some of the Mardonia family as part of this thread ...
http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=52632.0\
Currently to represent them on the table top, I have a unit of swordsmen, and a unit of handgunners, and they dress in blue and orange.
There is also some limited mention of Matorea on MadAlfred's site, along with a good bit of info on the Border Princes as a whole.
Artoban has taken the place name into the world of Dragon Rampant and/or AoS.
-
Ah, very nice!
I mean, I've been through some Border Princes material and the name hadn't rung any bells to me, but what a nice little thing to do.
Back when I was still doing Chaos Dwarfs I did the same with Zharr Naggrund - if the Lizardmen can fly off their pyramids, why couldn't the Chaos Dwarfs, through Shadow magic, snatch their own ziggurats away? :) Standing between the Realms of Fire and Shadow, there stood mighty Zaramuskharaz' Citadel. It was a nice way to keep up with my favorite OCs into the new setting, although I am more unto Ogres and Chaos Mortals there days over there.
Painting Orange can be tricky, in my experience. They are looking pretty great, Artoban!
My current Dragon Rampant foes are Chaos Warriors lead by Crom the Conqueror, as well as pals' Perry Plastics XVth century fiefdoms and some other Imperials as well. XD
-
See. This is how it happens - GP - inspiration and new miniatures, 023 - battle report on a 3x3 board, - shadespire - Ralpartha sale, buy troll, look at new troops, raise old thread.
Insidious.
When I was complaining to my son about building models, he dodged the obvious ploy to get him to make these, offered up his wisdom from when he was a mechanic and dealing with the dreaded tires and oil changes ‘ when you hate something that cant be avoided, get good at it and get it done as fast as possible’

Yep, I'm still processing my move, got to finish clearing out the storage unit so I don't need ot pay anymore there and have new storage space an the new place. Then it'll be on to moving forward with the hobby. :icon_cool:
-
Built with the support of my hobby cat (having a dubious building rapport), my batch of Fireforge Northmen warriors (compliments of GP)
Who will be a squad in my Dragon army. I’m rethinking the whole DR set up. I was going to go with a Matorean theme but since it’s such a huge AoS theme, I think I'll go with a different idea as yet unknown. I’ve decided I will get the rest of the Ralpartha trolls (another 6)
To give me a small troll army. It will only cost $37 cdn for them so it’s a bargain. Those figures have really grown on me. At first I didn’t like them. A reduced unit of daemons are up for fun. They were leftovers from my Tzeentch army. I have a huge pile of empire troops I can choose to make up more protagonists. They have already shown up before but this is a new start.

I like the new look! I'm thinking it might be good to use a lighter brown on the shoulder straps to have a piece of the detail come out more. Also, I like how the brown colors of the hats are slightly different than the uniforms, and that some still have a red color too. :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

Those straps did kind of disappear. I think I have something that will work. I’m glad you like the colours. I’m grabbing the brown primer tomorrow and hope to get going on that. I need to come up with a plan to differentiate the warriors, gunners, archers. I also have a cannon kicking around too a day unit of old great swords. Also a load of knights as well. With 12 trolls and deamons, they will need some help
-
I went through my extra units from my old army and found a few for conversion to DR. I only had 10 great swords so I found and old champ from a partial command squad and an old battlestandard guy (bastard was always top heavy and falling over) that I cut off his flag, removed his pinned on sword from his back. Great idea till I looked and saw it was a sheathed sword so I removed his left arm, cut away his horn he was holding and reattached in the new way. Thus 12 great swords out of 10.
I have a bunch of knights as well plus 5 panther knights from warlord that may provide the mobile portion of this band.

The greatswords look sweet!
Thanks! Going to post a new pic without flash and a clean background lol!

It is nice to see 12 of them. They could be in the 6 figure unit category of a Foot Men-At Arms with the special rule Ferocious in Lion Rampant.
-
I like that idea☝️
Here’s a wip of the northmen plus the rest of the crew so far. Based yesterday, a few colours today. Screwed up there shoulders - damn my no good eyesight. Need shield interior and I think I’ll throw a decal in. On the box it’s blue with a white wolf head. I could do the same and use a white space wolf head decal. Not sure yet.

Thank you very much GP! Feedback makes everything worthwhile. Next up are some very easy halberdiers to convert as they are mostly painted. I’m start building the archers next but my brown primer crapped out with half a can still available. Might bea bit of a wait to get more.

Here is a little bonus. 12 halberdiers. Just washed and based some of my old unit. No desire to repaint them either.

A band of militia and another band of halberdiers.
Now I should get going on the protagonists. Still waiting for a Ralpartha troll to show up, then I think I’ll order the 6.

I’ve got the lion rampant book as well. Do I need historical units or will units like I have do. I can concentrate on a lion army and I was thinking of your mention of zoom. Maybe in the future we could have a go at some head bashing 😺
I never heard of zoom till you mentioned it and then I heard it on the radio a few times today
-
Oooh! That sounds like a good idea, but I will save that for a separate thread.
Yes, no reason not use some of your figures for a historical army. There are a bunch of historical army list towards the end of Lion Rampant. Lion Rampant and Dragon Rampant are very close to one another as rules and units.
-
I’ll check them out.

A little update on the archers. 6 out of 12. Should get moving on the other 6 plus another troll. I ordered the other 6 in this series which will complete the group after maybe 14 years. It says something that theses are still available and were probably long before I found them originally.

Yes, those trolls are something. I almost bought them recently when Ral Partha was running a sale. Might still at some point.

Dang, I love the look of those archers. Probably one of my favorite sets out of the fireforge stuff.

They are a nice bunch of models. Can’t wait to get them into a battle. With the addition of the trolls, I can put together a scenario and try them out.

Love the Ral Partha trolls!

When reorganizing what little had been done on my Forgotten World figures, I was wondering what Artoban had used for bases with his, and so called up this thread. Looks like he used the round ones that come with the kits, and not the square ones. As it turns out, the square one's are 25mm instead of the WFB size of 20mm, so now I am still undecided about what I will do. :icon_neutral:
I'm going to pull out the Dragon Rampant rules, and have another look at them. Realize they are very similar to the Lion Rampant rules, and I've been playing these enough where it won't be tough to use the Dragon Rampant rules. My curiosity is up with what I might be able to make from my Forgotten World figures for an army to take up into Canada for vacation after the border is reopened and the pandemic eases into a safer sense of the world.

So I have a nephew that was able to obtain enough Lizards continue on a path for a Lizardmen army, and he is currently making enough for a Dragon Rampant list of 24 points.
Meanwhile, I didn't like the sample lists in the bakc of the book for making a human conquistador fantasy force, along the line of what might be seen in Lustria. So ... decided to create my own, which the writers of Dragon Rampant encourage, and this allows for creating all sorts fantasy options.
Here's the list currently for my fantasy Conquistadores ...
1 Heavy foot (12 figures = 4points), with it's associated Scouts unit (6 figures with handguns = 2 points)
1 Heavy foot (12 figures = 4points), with it's associated Scouts unit (6 figures with handguns = 2 points)
1 Elite Cavalry unit (6 figures = 6 points
1 Hero (1 figure unit on a Lizard mount = 6 points and fighting like an Elite cav force)
That's 24 points total. :icon_cool:
For the fun of it, I might try to come up with another list as well, although I lik the one above.

You could put your 25-30mm human-sized figures on round 20mm bases. You can then put them on trays where the side of individual square base is assumed to be 20mm. And you can get those 25mm rings to but around your 20mm bases, to upgrade them to 25mm round bases where the game absolutely needs those.
Or you can move to play Oathmark, where ranked-up infantry is always on 25mm bases, which can be round or square, depending on what kind of movement trays you build. Or move to play Kings of War, where the number of models on the unit tray is not dictated by the game.
But for friendly games, I would assume the base sizes aren't that important really.
Personally, I'm putting my historical/fantasy figures on 25mm round bases, and then playing rank-and-file games where individual base size is not that important. Just use trays that fit the game, and organize the figures on the tray as best. It's a bit problematic for med and hvy infantry, who are supposed to form tight units like pike blocks or shield walls.
But this approach is a luxury allowed by hundreds and hundreds of traditionally based Warhammer models, which I can use in that kind of games.
In the end, miniature game hobbyists tend to eventually build & paint so many models that you can eventually have several differently based armies for different games.

As it turns out, I remeasured the plastic bases that come with the Forgotten Worlds figures, and either size provided fits with the various other medieval figures I am using for Lion Rampant, and thus both types of bases easily fit for Dragon Rampant. Now it is just a matter of what I'd prefer to do.

Yep, I have figures based on both the square and round bases, and it really doesn't matter for the Lion Rampant and Dragon Rampant games, plus the other rule sets in the same series.
I now have LR, DR, Pikemen's Lament, Rebels & Patriots, and The Men Who Would Be Kings.

With the whole Rampant series of rules, I cross my figures from fantasy to historical, and care much less about the base sizes at this point.
By the time this Covid crud get done, I'll have multiple armies I can bring on a trip to where ever. I have a brother in Wisconsisn, and would probably try to meet up with S.O.F. there as well. Plus looking forward to connecting someday with Artoban and Gankom in Canada, would even consider bringing an army to Europe to meet up with some W-E people on future trips there. In fact, there is a historically aimed guy in France where he and his wife have a bed and breakfast, and they provide historical tours in the morning or during the day, with wargames in the afternoon or at night. These all sound like good vacations to me. :icon_mrgreen:

By the way, my medieval units that use with the Rampant rules system also use a 3-2-1 system for the bases where a person put 1 to 3 figures on a base, and the sizes vary ... 1 infantry on 25 or 30, and 2 on 30 or 40, and 3 on 50 ... something like that. Cav go on 40, 50, and 60.
And when it comes to spear/pikes ... such units tend to move around the board with bases slightly spaced or pushed together, while when in Schiltron/Spear Wall the bases touch to signify a defensive stance.
