Title: Kickstarters - Ongoing list
Post by: Midaski on July 08, 2017, 04:59:41 PM
We have had odd ones with their own thread being run by forum regulars, like Westfalia for example, but I thought it might be an idea to have a dedicated thread for odd ones members spot that could be of interest.

I'll kick off with this one from Midlam Miniatures:

It runs until July 23rd
I have supported a couple of theirs before, and bought off their stand at Salute.
Nice little growing company that does simple small projects.

I'm a little underwhelmed by what they've made public so far in Bones 4, and 2018 is a bit of a wait for the rewards.

2019 for some depending on the wave!

So far there's only a few things that have caught my eye. Mostly the fire giant hunter. Still, there's a month to go. I'm hoping for some good expansions.

Seriously tempted by the Bruegelburg Kickstarter. Women & children with this combination of character, realism and finesse are hard to find. But the balalaika extra is just silly, methinks.

Was initially skeptic about the the Reaper Bones 4 Kickstarter. But now the sheer amount of minis - and those more recent monster additions - begin to make it more tempting. Maybe I should sell some unpainted GW metal Goblins and Trolls and replace them with these?

Judging from the Bones 3 minis, their casting medium and molds have got somewhat better. Finer detail and small/thin weapons are still a problem, though.

Uh... I don't actually need a single miniature more... But...

The sample game is a bit like a Trumps card game - I lay this car, you counter, I lay another countering that.
Is that MtG with minis.  :engel:

Nice enough, but foresee add-on after add-on of other armies and figures - a 10 year ongoing project at least.

Yeah I have grown to like the simplified rules as well! I would like too see if i can rebase them though, put the infantry on 20mm square bases and the cavalry on 25x50mm square bases. That way I could still play "A Song of Ice & Fire" with them (since the movement tray and number of models is all that counts there) and also play Empire/Bretonnia with them by placing the models on other movement trays.

Right now I have pledged for 2x Starter Sets, 2x boxes of Cutthroats and 1x extra box of Knights of Casterly Rock. If they release some more sweet stretch goals and addons I will try to get them too. At the moment the KS is picking up momentum with only 6 days to go, and the next stretch goal will unlock 8 additional archers for the base box/pledge, rounding it up to a total of 12x Archers.
They have hinted that Bolton Cavalry is coming, and their artwork looks really menacing and great!
(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/017/817/785/dd8b46e3e50cd0455c8e0c7ce206d055_original.jpg?w=639&fit=max&v=1502070496&auto=format&q=92&s=328931b85d235344a75d03be37dd6ed7)

I would recommend joining in on this Ks, I think this is a nice deal for the amount of miniatures you get. :)

"Players may also choose to spend points on various Non-Combat Units (NCU), such as Tyrion Lannister and Catelyn Stark. These individuals work behind the scenes, influencing the course of events through their skills at politics, negotiation, or battlefield strategy."

if you buy Catelyn stark, you auto lose your game.

Is the funding rate of 311% atm good or bad for ASOIAF? I somehow think CMON & the licencees might have hoped for better at this stage. There are definitely fewer pledges than on some previous bestselling CMON Kickstarter miniature games. Despite the fantasy setting being viral over the globe. Is the miniatures hobby aspect really this niche for ASOIAF?

On the other hand, the actual pledged sum is approaching a million dollars, which is huge for a miniature tabletop game on Kickstarter.

Now speculate. :)

1) $150 is fairly expensive to the point where you can't just invest as a random throwaway. Hence why there is a lower number but a higher $ of pledge. I think it's weird it's a kickstarter honestly, should be popular enough to standalone.
2) Maybe more response if it came out a few years ago?
Title: Re: Kickstarters - Ongoing list
Post by: Kallstrom on August 09, 2017, 12:01:42 PM
Cmon has mentioned that they are focusing on the retail release of this game since that will promote long-livity for the game. The Ks works more like a pre-order where you get the units/startbox cheaper and gets some alternative sculpts of characters.  They are of the point of view that if they treat this Ks like a regular Ks and shower us with everything they got in store they might kill the will of the retailers to stock this game in the future, hence making it harder to generate hype and build a new playerbase over time. They want this game to succeed and they believe that the key to that is to build the game's releases from the ground up once it hits the stores.

I like that they want to focus on keeping this game alive for many years to come by supporting it over time, so I am okay with not getting everything at once. At the moment we have three factions. Starks, Lannisters, and Mercenaries. More will come in the future. :)

$150 for the starter box gives you 137 miniatures as of now. That is pretty sweet.

and when the TV series finishes in 2 years time, you end up with a game based on a non-popular culture hyped media ie the gw lotr and hobbit games...

not convinced!
Title: Re: Kickstarters - Ongoing list
Post by: Kallstrom on August 09, 2017, 01:16:01 PM
"Non-popular culture hyped media"? Well, each to their own, I guess. :) The game is based on the books, and not the tv-show. Of course one cannot foresee the future, but one can hope that the game will still will be fun and exciting for people that are fans of the books and the ASoI&F-universe. Otherwise you end up with miniatures you could always use for other games, like Warhammer, Ninth Age, Kings of War, Frostgrave etc.

This does not have to convince you, and backing a Kickstarter is always a risk (even though more established companies like Cmon often is a safe bet), but only time will tell how this game will fare. I am hoping for the best, since I long for a rankNfile-game that is not over-complex, and combining that with the tactics deck gives me a cozy Triumph & Treachery-feel, which feels nice. It will add some more random element to the games, which spice things up and makes each game a little more unique. ;)
Title: Re: Kickstarters - Ongoing list
Post by: Finlay on August 09, 2017, 01:20:48 PM
I didn't mean asoif or LOTR aren't good, just that once the tv/film ends they lack the widespread "popular culture" boost they gained from the tv/film.

asoif has always been good, but it was not like this in terms of popular culture recognition until the TV show.
In the same way that LotR and Hobbit books are still really good, and available for people to read. but the cultural seepage of them has slipped back down after the films were finished being released.

Of course asoif has 2 more books to be published which might re-hype for future releases... if you think GRRM is ever going to finish writing them.

that's what I meant, I didn't word it that well in the above post.

the minis are nice and the game looks fun, I hope you enjoy it!
Title: Re: Kickstarters - Ongoing list
Post by: Kallstrom on August 09, 2017, 01:51:14 PM
Yeah, they will probably not get a surge of hype like we are used to with the tv-show running from time to time, but as you say the coming books might generate some more interest. Hehe, but yes who knows if we will get those books or not - GRRM might fall off the deep end before that happens, unfortunately. :)

Aye, I hope that I will enjoy it too! Otherwise I will just use the miniatures for other games, so I think I will manage to come out on top from backing this Ks no matter what happens to the game in the future, which at least for me justifies spending the amount of money they are asking for. Cheers!

Agree on what you wrote above on the ASOI&F game niche in the market. Thanks for these insights. :)

Is there a size comparison of the ASOI&F figures? Their proportions are rather realistic, so they might fit better with historical minis than the flamboyant fantasy-anime that rules these days in popular fantasy figures (like, the Bones kickstarter mentioned above). Could they be more like the 'true-scale' 28mm than the 'heroic'? (Of course some of them are big for obvious reasons, like the Mountain).

The faq says theyre 32 mm. So probably a bit large. The mountain probably will tower over a normal guy but that's rather fitting.

Pretty tall & large, then. Their 4x3 infantry movement tray is probably the size of a traditional 5x4 movement tray, if not even larger.

Wouldn't fit with any of my existing armies/projects. Already many Reaper humans are too tall or thick. A skip for me. But many thanks for the comparison photos!

Title: Re: Kickstarters - Ongoing list
Post by: Kallstrom on August 10, 2017, 01:21:50 PM
No problemo, the game and the miniatures cannot be something for everybody, after all! :)

The tray sizes are 14cm wide x 12cm deep for infantry, and 14cm wide x 12,5cm deep for cavalry. So the trays are larger than their counterpart when it comes to usual Warhammer sizes!

I didn't realise they were a different scale...

I also really think theh should have brought this out 4 years ago. They would have been able to ride the financial success better while the TV series airs. This time next year and its all over for the mass market - they will only be left with the book readers.
Title: Re: Kickstarters - Ongoing list

The next season will probably be 1,5 years in the future, and this game will be released around april, so hopefully there will still be time to build a playerbase while the hype is going and when the game is a little more established I think it will be fine. If you like a game, its lore, and the miniatures you won't mind sticking to it, right? New fluff content is sweet and all but like with Warhammer people could still enjoy the game and get more new blood into the hobby even if new fluff was not on the horizon. But we will have to see, and I'll keep my fingers crossed. ;)

Last day of the kickstarter btw (15 hours to go), if anyone wants to get in on it! Less than $1 per miniature in the Starter Box now!

The LAM Bruegelburg kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/822163699/bruegelburg-a-day-at-the-fair) is going strong, with some really nice unlocked stretch goals/add-ons. Part of the older series is also available as add-ons now.

The Reaper Bones 4 seems to go as usual. Hard to see what I'd do with so many more generic/special figures, but it's already become a sweet deal.

Only problem is these run at the same time...

I was pretty pumped when Reaper 4 started, but I'm actually losing a bit of interest. It's a sweet deal and the models are great, but I've backed the past two so I'm kind of drowning in adventurer models and the more generic stuff. This one doesn't have quite as many big things or special things grabbing my attention. The core set and the expansions have great value, and the Dreadmere one especially has me interested.

Matt had a similar game we tried out last Christmas - have you seen that?
It was heroes trying to beat baddies, and so a bit limited in objectives, but needed some tactical nous.

Plus delivery in April next year is a bit close to Bash potential dates - given the way most of my recent kickstarters have gone.  :closed-eyes:

they also did a fantasy one where you control monsters and get attacked by villagers, soldiers and heros which seems like a fun inversion.
I like the idea of a game I could play on my own and scale it up, that you can carry in one box and finish in an evening.

I was a bit disappointed by the first Mantic Kings of war kickstarter. My package was badly late, sent to the wrong address, etc.

I was almost tempted by the night stalkers and dwarves, but I think I'm going to sit it out. I have enough models between the previous reaper kicks and the next one.

These are good models, and realistic too. The only unreal thing is semi-naked berserkers in furs. According to the saga descriptions, they would look quite similar to other warriors. That said, within the fantasy-viking genre, this is likely as realistic it can ever get. I'm afraid my wallet will cry a little after these ladies...

In most games, Elves have many small skirmishing units. I think the Atlantisminiatures ones would work nicely as such.

They should probably make a head sprue for people who want an uniform look in their armies and whish to mix these with GW, Mantic, Northstar etc. ones.

That's the same lot that made the halflings Warlord Games are selling I think.

A lot of interesting stuff there - the only question I have is are the units of 20 single model figures? One unit shows some graphics of 5 different figures, but the others look the same.

I had a quick look in the comments and I think within every unit there will be several poses for the miniatures. But better check for yourself again.

I have some of them as a friend and I split a Kickstarter pledge. There are multiples of various poses in most units, so a bit old school but they aren't all the same pose like the old 90s GW units. Paint variations will help them look more variant.

Got my Ogres in the mail today ... only pledged for one set of three (set V1), yet after the fact picked up another (set V2), and the Ogre sized bull dog, too.  Might buy a third set (V3), maybe the leader next too.

Here's the kickstarter from before ... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/atlantisminiatures/atlantis-miniatures-ogres/description ... looks like late pledges are still being accepted.

Hoping to use these with my halfmen from Westfalia.  Someday. :icon_wink:

So many terrain tutors in the Youtube, and now they are making their own technique manuals. I still have my old Hints and Tips for the Plastic Modeller from the 80's, and haven't used all the techniques there. How many of these technique manuald does a man need (in addition to the Youtube videos)?

Can't recall which guy had a terrain manual recently, but I ordered one.  And it did seem to be very popular.  It might end up being more inspirational for me than anything else, and it'll allow me to rifle through it, without having to take too much time to view multiple videos.

Pizza dungeon? OMG what nonesense stories these Reape campaigns have!

Very undecided about most of the figures shown thus far. Hope to see them offering smaller sets from the core set. But the Trollbridge addition is a must!

I might want the towsfolk. Maybe one or two other figures that cant be purchased separately.

I'm not hyped about Bones 5. I think I'm just a little burned out by Reaper Kickstarters, but really there's not much there to grab me. I'm kind of interested in the mammoth and townsfolk, I generally like the giant, but not even any of them super interest me.

I also find the comment section to be especially whinny this time. Lots of people upset that there's no updates during (America) night, the updates have been slow (Because they blew through two weeks worth of updates in 24 hours), and even just lots of complaints about the models.

Yeah - Midlam tend to do small KS with about 12 minis at a time, and seem focussed on figures for skirmish or warband style games.
I have sometimes bought two sets - which they usually offer - and then done some simple weapon conversions.

The gnomes sets I have managed to turn into small units of combat troops, with great weapons, spears or swords, supported by archers or crossbows.
If I want a 20 man unit I can put all the halberds/axes in the front ranks, and spears at the back.

Sounds like you can add on extras during the survey after the KS, so I'm in for a set for now.

New KS, raven and bear folk. Not of any use to me, but thought I'd share since it's an interesting idea (and Effin Cool is run by a nice guy.)

Seems the Reaper Bones KS grew to have something of a maritime theme, in addition to the normal DnD, dragons and monsters. A huge ship for 100 USD.

They're doing small diorama type encounters, each with a terrain piece and some goodies and baddies facing off.

They've also started to reveal a last minute steampunkish Chronoscope expansion.

Still 21 hours to go.

Not so inspired by those

Definitely a bit more cartoon-y. Almost Rankin-Bass like. I'm on the fence about them.

I've been painting some of the Midlam hobgoblins and I'm totally on Team Midlam now. They are really great figuers. I was looking at their web site when the latest KS popped up in my email...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1662635043/cult-of-the-moon-goddess

(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/028/205/310/724dfee691115cdfbe00db2f78c10e81_original.jpg?ixlib=rb-2.1.0&crop=faces&w=1024&h=576&fit=crop&v=1582567021&auto=format&frame=1&q=92&s=eb7c95bad7730dc06f4b2a12d1508513)

I notice that there is a considerable savings in supporting their KS vs. buying later. So I'm tempted to get a set or two o these figures just because I like them and could possibly find a role for them in my plans at some point in the future. On the other hand, I'm torn because I'm trying to stop buying for "maybe someday" and trying to focus on "what will I paint this year".

I got the KS notification through too.

I will probably get a set, as although I doubt I will use them as a 'cult', I can see uses for them as civilians, townsfolk, Ladies alongside Lords, nuns, and even fighters as some have easy conversion options.

Those look interesting enough that they might be usable with some tweaks and modifications. The human miniatures are not good though (some look like garbage to be honest). And the fact that the writing on the tank apparently says "norba miniatures" is also not too clever.

Kickstarter by MOM miniatures: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/84134537/momminiaturas-novedades

They have some Empire-esque miniatures including Ogres and a Giant. Quality could be better, but they are very .. let's say affordable.

Newest kickstarter from Westfalia ...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/westfaliaminiatures/heroes-of-aventuria-2-siebenstreich

The orks are a different style.  I like the undead!  The humans are cool. :icon_biggrin:
They've added some warbands to this project for purchases, and figures can also be purchased in groups of 10 or 20.

So I went ahead and pledged in the newest Westfalia campaign for the group of human infantry and the three viking like figures, plus postage.  It was nice to see that the $120 in Canadian dollars came out to a little over $84 in American dollars.

I've been tempted to get the undead figures too, but we'll see.

These are some fairly cool looking miniatures ...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kmg/winged-death-undead-miniatures/description

Can't see a current use for them, unless I get more into fantasy.  I did pick up some undead from Westphalia's last kickstarter, so who knows what might heppen.  These are terribly evil looking bad guys, that's for sure.

Sold. Those look awesome. I'm hesitant to buy new miniatures right now due to concerns about job security. But I couldn't pass those up - the temptation was too great.

I have never participated in a kickstarter, but this is one of those where I am very tempted. The problem is, I really like the design of most miniatures (even though it's all CAD), but I am not convinced by the painted examples. The ones in the group photo look great, but the individual ones (from the last kickstarter) not so much. They seem to lose a bit of detail when being casted, especially noticeable on their faces I think. I have tried to find more photos of them, but could not find anything. Does anyone own some of their miniatures by any chance?

I like the top warband, maybe I'll pledge.

So I decided to back this KS (for the 1st time). It has already reached several Stretch Goals. (Link on the previous page).

(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/029/656/234/bacf3ce46089eaa0d55ddd650a384a15_original.png?ixlib=rb-2.1.0&crop=faces&w=1024&h=576&fit=crop&v=1593549171&auto=format&frame=1&q=92&s=4ec86181edfba3fbc5dc29418d10c9e1)

I will have to do some converting on some miniatures, but the outcome should be pretty nice.

The kickstarter mentioned above is nearing it's end. There are some lovely stretch goals unlocked already (some currently still WIP)

A Shrine:

I pledged for one warband plus postage.  There are a few other figures I'd like to add into the total, but might not until after campaign is over. They've blown past the most recent stretch goals, and it'll be interesting to see if they add anything else.

I pledged to get the Order of the Flaming Lys group.  I see these as being used for fantasy, role playing, and maybe historicals.  The extra helmets could come in handy if the men-at-arms figures are used for historicals.  However, I'm more interested in keeping the men-at-arms as originally designed for fanatsy/role playing, and using the footmen and archers for fantasy and historicals.

I'm contemplating a several of the other figures for role playing considerations.

The kickstarter is over. I pledged for quite a lot and will probably go for more, when I see the final products. Now I need to figure out what to do with them and on what kind of bases I should put them on. (So far everything I have went on square bases for WFB.)

I added some more funds for postage, the ranger looking dude, the assassin looking (dark?) elf, and the hobbit on the Ogre.

I pledged for 12 packs of unpainted ... I'll find a use for them with my Necrons or Tau.  Or maybe for a Lion Rampant army of some kind.

There are already stretch goals that have passed for the kickstarter above that include ... fishy weapons, undead heads, more weapon options, town guard heads, river patrol, bases, prominent people #1, witch hunters, dice, cossacks (kislev), cultists, and prominent people #2.  Next stretch goal is at 15 euros and are northmen.

I'm pledging. :icon_mrgreen:

I'm not a massive fan of Halflings, but these are very well done I have to say. I'm currently working on a Human Witch Hunter warband myself and can certainly tell where the "inspiration" of each model came from.  :icon_wink:

The other stuff looks pretty nice as well, as far as I can tell from the tiny pictures.

I agree on the "inspiration".  And it seemed quite obvious to anyone familiar with certain Imperial figures from a by gone era. :icon_lol:

Although it seems the various figures are highly detailed, I'm only interested in the halflings.  The flaggie trying to lick the drumstick is my least favorite.  However, it seems cheaper to get the full boat than choosing the original figures and paying upwards for the stretch goals.

I bought a bunch of extra heads, bodies, arms, and legs to make bunches of these figures, and then a slew of other weapons and such.  I don't even know if I have enough of the former to cover each other, mostly because I could only get the initial set, and then buy 10 more of the bits.

Contemplated getting the stl files for a future 3D printing option, although have no idea when I'd be getting one of those.  And suspect there will always be more opportunities for figures moving forward anyway.
