How do you get your army from place to place?
« on: January 21, 2005, 04:17:18 AM »
As I am just now starting to build an army, I have never had to take it some where for a game. How do you go about making sure they are not damaged, but that traveling is not a huge pain.

I saw the carrying case in a local GW, but I am not convinced its the best choice.

What do you guys do?

I also use Sabol Army Transport Cases. Though they haven't got a hard shell like the GW ones they are rigid and a lot larger. The ability to customize the foam shapes is what I like the most though, no matter what the stance of the mini you'll always be able to make it fit snuggly and therefore safely.

I bought a Charon Skirmishpack (deluxe edition, I think) which holds a TON of miniatures. Shipping is a problem as they are based in Canada and can only ship there and to the US for any reasonable price. I picked them up on vacation :)

Have a look!

Getting back to the topic, is there some rule which states that Miniature carrying cases have to be ludicrously expensive? What with shipping costs, I think I'm still ahead buying the ludicrously expensive GW cases from my local store. *muttery mutteringness*

Actually I find the GW case ridiculously expensive for the amount of (non-customizable) storage space you get. Fine for armies with a low model (infantry) count but you'll need many of them for a horde army.

The Sabol one is very light as long as it has no (metal) minis in it so it's cheap to ship.

I made my own  transport case, very similar to the GW, buy a box with 2 floors in it and get your hands on some foam ( the stuff that is in the GW boxes )
The foam costs nothing and the box was 25 euro for me.

2 Advantages over the GW box :

It's not nearly as expensive

You can cut out the spaces in the foam yourself, optimising the amount of troops you carry with you.
In my box every model has it's stationary position, I can easily carry 3000 points in one box, haven't tried more.

In the lower part I have Cavalry/Monsters/heroes/anything that is tall, they stand up.
In the above part I can put 2 Layers : full foam / cut foam / full foam / cut foam, the models lay down in the upper part of the box.
40 models per layer is easy

Currently, I'm using an ordinary toolbox. However, I have all my models with magnetic bases on steel paper-lined movement trays, so they all just sit in the bottom of the box in their units. Good for quick deployment.

I have one GW case, but I wouldn't buy any more. Too expensive.

NUgaming sell some nice cases:

Not sure where you're based.  I'm in UK and havent seen the SABOL cases over here.  However, you can get the "figures in comfort" range, which is pretty good.  Also, GW mail order have a larger case (Charon originally) which I think is much better than the plastic ones.

One thing to consider though - Charon says the Skirmish Pack is the perfect size for air travel. British Airways does not agree. As British Arways has airplanes, and Charon does not, the suitcases had to travel in the hold. Fortunately they're *really* sturdy, with a metal inner frame and rounded edges, so noting got crushed :)
