Lore of Shadow Character Swap Tactics
« on: January 03, 2015, 01:08:32 PM »
Because shadow magic seems to be a suitable lore for the empire I was wondering if you could gain any tactically sound uses from the possible character swap trait after summoning a spell.
Keeping your wizard in a bunker seems to be wiser than swapping his position elsewhere; however, to make use of this trait seems to be fun and might even open up new tactical possibilities during a game.

Have you ever played this style and what are your recommendations?

Any tactical advice or anecdotes are appreciated!

There was this suggestion: http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=49684.msg920886#msg920886 (but see the remarks in the following posts).
It is not enough to have no ideas of your own; you must also be incapable of expressing them.

Ok, swap with a beast lore wizard and then let him do transformation sounds fun (although risky).

(( LeeGraw,

I'm not sure if this was mentioned elsewhere, but you can swap places with a Witch Hunter as well.

Wizard gets into unwanted melee with big-snarly, casts a low-end spell, and poof... swaps with the angry Witch Hunter.

Though... since you only cast spells on your turn, it does make the placement swap a bit trickier.))

I've always wanted to do Shadow swaps, but it just never works out.

The Dark Elves had a crazy tactic a while back with a L1 Shadow on a Pegasus and a L4 Death on a Pegasus. On T1 and level 1 would fly over to the flank of the enemy line. If the Winds of Magic were kind... they cast something, swapped with the L4, who then Purple Sun'ed the entire enemy battle line. Potentially brutal.

For Empire, Witch Hunters seemed like the all-around best bet, especially if you're setting it up to get him to his quarry. You could run up (not into combat), cast a hex, swap with the Witch Hunter and let him take a pot-shot. Probably dead next turn, but you could position him as a diverter...

In combat... I considered was a Captain for 'Hold the Line!' - the idea being that now you have a unit that will unexpectedly be a better tar-pit...or a War Priest for unexpected Hatred/Prayers seems cool...but in those cases, I'd just be giving a minor buff to the unit, which just seemed like a lot of hoops to jump through/general risk for a minimum reward.

The trouble is that you need to be the same troop type, and we don't have any real blender characters, so it's extremely hard to set up any kind of "gotcha!" moment with this.

I've been trying a Lvl 4 shadow wizard with a 4+ ward and the van horstmans speculum.

Swap him round, challenge big beefy characters and have a bit of a laugh.

He held up a Khorne flying Demon Prince just the other day..

Cheers,

Pip . :icon_wink:

Occasionally had luck with getting infantry horde with low level shadows wizard into combat.  In magic phase nearby, unengaged priest casts buffs on self which rarely get dispelled (whereas if priest in unit using them they get stopped ).  Then throw miasma on something not very threatening (which again doesn't get cancelled ) then switch.

Worked a treat against a troll horde when I knew trying to get soulfire off from priest in unit would never work

I run my Sorceror mounted just for this trick.   Charge something mean with your sorcerer - most opponent's will stand and hold - and then cast a mediocre Shadow spell.  Swap him with the nearby General or tooled-up beat stick and lay down the law.

I recently used it to limit damage done to a horde he was hiding in after I rolled IF, I moved him to a unit that was expendable at the time and lost much less point wise/strategically as a result

That's actually a really clever move.
You get to move your wizard with the lore attribute before seeing what the miscast does.  :eusa_clap:

Would it be possible to swap places with a champion model within the same regiment?

No. The attribute specifies "a friendly character of the same troop type" and Champions are not characters.

((Hey LeeGraw,

Since's it's the Witches Season, I figured a little bit of zombie-thread revival would be okay.

Anyway, you know... I think you can move any number of times using the Shadow Lore Attribute, as long as you're within 18" of a matching character, and the spell is cast.

Something I've been doing lately with my Shadow Sorceress...

I'll keep her with her Archer Escort Unit behind my main infantry block, but within 18" of my Warrior Priest.  She'll cast a minor-ish hex or whatnot... and swap with the Warrior Priestess in said infantry block, putting the mage into the melee unit.  Then she goes off with her zorch spell or super-hex, or Pendulum of Death... and swaps places again with the Warrior Priestess.  Putting the mage back with her Archers, and the Warrior Priestess back into the front lines.

It doesn't always work, as sometimes the spells are countered and stuff, but it is worth the "Did... she just move her mage into combat" look on their faces, as they're never quite sure what you are going to do next... especially when you have both the Pendulum and Pit of Shades.  And... it also lets you get a spot better range, as Shadow spells are on the shorter-side for casting.))
