:-P
Have been lurking on this forum for the past few months, enjoying everybody else's painted minis, so I thought it was high time I joined in as well.
By way of background I s'pose I am similar to most others, in that I got into Warhammer when young, wandered away living the life of a carefree dissolute youth for a time, before eventually finding my way back home. The Empire was my first love, so I had retained a smallish pile of (badly) painted figures kicking around in my bits box for a few, erm, decades. The announcement that ye Old World was making a comeback got the creative juices flowing once more, so I started taking a closer look at those old minis once more.
First thing I noticed was how amazing the sculpts were on the old metal minis :-o Slapped some paint on and now I am hooked :-D I tried blue and white first up, purely because I have found in the past that they tend to work well together, and so now I guess by default I am painting a Middenheim army
Below are my first two test minis, not yet properly based (guy on the right is a test). Will update this OP with full army pics once I get going.
Have kicked on a bit from there, and will post things up as I can. Need to sort out a proper photography setup. My goal is to paint everything to the absolute best of my ability, but am aware of the my own limitations therein. You name the fancy technique (wet blending, NMM etc.), I don't know how to do it :-D But am hoping to improve over time, so feedback is appreciated. I am especially curious as to how I will do the banners. I have never tried freehanding anything, and with historicals I always buy printed banners....
Without wanting to make this opening post overly long, thought it would be also good to put down the minis I have/hope to be using. Not everything will be strictly GW (because of how damn expensive they are :engel:), however I am hoping to stick to the puffy sleeve aesthetic wherever possible  This will be updated as I come to some firm conclusions on how well different ranges match. Have already done some experimenting however, so these are my thoughts so far.
Halberds; metal GW and Artizan
Spears; Artizan, Foundry and Warlord Games
Archers; GW
Handgunners; Not yet decided, a mix of everything perhaps!
Crossbows; Warlord Games
Greatswords; Warlord Games & metal GW (probably as seperate units, I don't think they will mix well)
Swordsmen; 8th ed GW plastics
Ogres; classic Marauder minis please :biggriin:
Arty, Lords etc; GW typically
Imperial Dwarfs; Assualt Group

I like what ya've done with the blue there! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Welcome!
The blue white is refreshing!
-
What a magnificent pair of minis!
Looking forward to some more pics :::cheers:::

Welcome!
The blue white is refreshing!
Indeed. Nice and crisp. I like the highlights too - makes them pop.
-
They look ace. Welcome to the site :)
-
Thanks for all the responses :::cheers:::
Still trying to sort out a good photography setup to use going forward, but if anyone was curious as to what happened to the steam tank the above engineer used to command, it was stolen by a pair of halflings :icon_mad: (they are from the TTCombat Kickstarter last year)
-
Excellent, and I like the dragon contraption on the back, too! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Wow, very nice painting. I really like the halflings from ttcombat, I have been waiting a long time for them to start selling them on there website.
-
The awesome blue colour on miniatures, hope to see a whole unit of state troops in this colours)
-
Well I can show off a unit that is very much still WIP at this stage and still missing a lot of minis, in particular a full command. Am hoping it will become the centrepiece of the army in time :smile2:
Very much built around the old classic metal halberdiers. The ones on either flank of the front row have to be some of my favourite sculpts ever. Just incrediblely well sculpted for what are otherwise simple rank and file. Am aiming to ultimately get my hands on all of that range :engel:
The two minis either side of them are from Artizan and mix in really well. Really happy with the paint job on the standard bearer, but not so sure of the standard. It's straight out of the Storm of Chaos book, and am thinking I should have painted over it to brighten it up some. I will try that on another banner, and if I like it better will come back and redo it.
To fill out the rear ranks have been converting some of the old minis with the plug in weapons. Don't like how their weapons stick straight out, so have converted new weapons for them and greenstuffed in the hole where the old ones fit in
(https://i.imgur.com/5ltCkfR.jpg)
Will likely keep coming back to this unit a lot, touching up highlights etc. Hope for it to be 30 odd strong when it is ultimately finished
-
The unit is looking wonderful with your painting. :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Marvellous looking unit! Regarding banners, they can indeed be often tricky. I think with the paper ones it's almost better not to faff around with them, they have a unique and well-executed aesthetic here!
-
nice work bro
-
Beautiful crisp painting. Wish I could paint like that.
-
Glorious paint jobs on lovely figures. And well done for picking the best Empire province.
-
A wee update, this time to show off the ogre brothers :smile2:
Have had the Mordheim one kicking around in my bits box for eons, but the Marauder chap only turned up this week, so quickly painted him up to match. Enjoyed painting him so much have my eye out for a few more from the range now
Lost the basket that sat on the back of the Mordheim chap long ago, but just covered it up with a shield :-D Also gave him a feather so he didn't feel left out.
-
I'd not seen the Marauder one previously, but he seems to look more human than ogre.
-
He is the guy bottom right.
Much smaller in height than the Mordheim chap, but still far bulkier than a human
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6zGASUAz0l4/U-t0UjbibvI/AAAAAAAAGB4/yhks-f42f_k/s1600/45-9b63d3f002.jpg)
-
Very clean style !
-
I like the little leaves you're using on the bases. Very comfy!
-
Yep, I have one of him, and one of the ogre with the gun.
-
Spent the weekend finishing off some artillery, but am waiting for some bases to arrive before I show them off.
Instead I went back and did a little more highlighting on this guy, another old mini who have I had for decades. This is, I believe, the third time I have painted him now
-
Always good to see old miniatures.
-
Wonderful! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap:
-
Thats such a crisp blue I gotta wear shades 8-)
Like your painting style very much :::cheers:::
-
Complete departure from classic minis today :-P
I skipped 7th and 8th editions entirely, so pretty much all releases from that period are entirely new to me, including this guy who arrived in a job lot of eBay. He is missing his backpack (will replace with something suitable down the line), and dunno about that gizmo on his hat, but other than that I actually quite like the mini. Not nearly as much character as a classic 4th edition sculpt imo, but not bad either :smile2:
I removed the cannonball he was originally standing on, and will probably put him in amongst the cannon crews once they are all done.

-
Beatiful oldschool Empire, well painted. Following for sure.

Non-Perry plastic Empire has this problem. I guess all 'autocad' miniature design has this problem. There's less character and less detail in the actual robes and gear, and this lack is then hid under a ton of unnecessary, cartoony and presumably 'funny' accessories, like the thing on his head. Oh well... We all become nostalgic oldtimers as time goes by, I guess... :)

Removing the cannon ball was a good idea, and nice painting too! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap:

I don't disagree. Am painting up the classic old Hellblaster crew at the moment, and if I had to choose "best empire dude with a spyglass" mini, it would be the one from that ancient kit. But I was still somewhat pleasantly surprised how well the plastic guy scrubbed up. I like him more than the 6th edition metal mini anyway, the one with the bird on his shoulder...
Have had these guys sitting around as well for ages in varying states of disrepair. Bought some head variants of ebay to spruce them up a but, and they turned out ok. Really hoping to get my hands on some of the classic metal handgunners as well. Maybe even add in some varients from thrid parties, like Brother Vinni etc.

Looks great! Once again very clean and vibrant, fantastic work!
-
Great looking unit, again!
-Z
-
Very nice, what color did you use on the banner pole?
-
The pole itself? P3 Menoth White Base.
I use it and the Menoth White Highlight paint a lot. They work really well.
-
Should be getting on with painting up rank and file, but the old good metal hellbalster turned up in the post, and was immediately distracted by the crew members. Some of the funnest minis I have ever painted, especially everybody's favourite Tillean inventor :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/Kjp2b1m.jpg)
Speaking of distractions, is this forum ok about non-Empire minis? Have my eye on a mint 4th edition boxed set, and am terribly tempted
-
Absolutely. Post / share what you like
-
Cheers. Although after long deliberation I decided to pass. What am I going to do with all those monopose grobi after all? :-P
-
These archers are another group of minis I have had owned for decades. I don't actually know where they are from. They aren't from the 4th ed wave of empire releases are they? Feels like they are a bit earlier than that but their tabs didn't have a date...
Anyways, this is still WIP, as I want to eventually get my hands on the whole range if I can, plus put together a command group.

GW metal from the mid to late 1990s
Lovely stuff
-
great work, lovely bright colour scheme
-
Believe I have a handful of those metal archers. The one on the far left I turned into a Westerland archer during days of the Crisis in Marienburg campaign, and included him with another 4 skirmishers.
-
Cheers guys :smile2:
GW metal from the mid to late 1990s
Ah, thanks. I was thinking they might be from earlier, before they got the Empire 'style' down, because they do look quite different to the rest of the range :-D
In other news I really need to stop buying assembled plastic minis on eBay. Prices are good, but it seems it is all the rage to build minis these days by just dunking everything in a glue pot and then mashing it all together :icon_mad: Anyone know of an efficient method of removing excess dried glue, or is it just a case of trying to scrape off as much as I can? :eusa_wall:
-
Ebay prices are mercifully cheap, but yeah you do get a mix of quality (and glues) from there. One set of minis I received once was stuck together with the strangest rubberised cement that had downright oranged with age and I couldn't scrape off for the life of me. (Those went in the bin.)
If it's rank or file minis ruined by too much glue they get relegated to the back rank. I have a number of old spearmen who lost shields and now have mangled arms for that reason. Not nearly so noticeable at the back of a big unit.
Neat looking archer unit! Definitely interested to see what you post up next.
-
Mine weren't as bad as yours. They have proven to be salvageable, although the feet are particularly bad owing to the small lake of glue that was used to stick them to the base :icon_confused:
Its the plastic flagellants, so feels like a somewhat appropriate act of self flagellation trying to painstakingly get them cleaned up with a hobby knife :-P
Weather is crap here for the foreseeable (altho we could definitely do with the rain :smile2:), so will be a little while till I can get out and take more piccies, but lots of pots are bubbling along nicely :::cheers:::
-
The sun has come out so a chance to show off another (nearly) finished unit :-P
That the Warlord Games Zweihander kit doesn't come with a command sprue is about the only bad thing I could say about it. Will have to buy those separate. Otherwise I think its an amazing kit, some of the best plastics I have worked with :eusa_clap: The banner is also my first try at painting over a printed banner. I think I like this more than the one on the halberdiers.
I know there are lots of comparison pics between this kit and the GW one, but thought I would throw one up anyway. In my mind they work perfectly together in the one army, but can't really put them together in the one regiment. The guy on the right is just far too weedy in comparison
Will come up with some head cannon reasoning as to why two units of greatswords look so different in the one army....btw, do the 6th edition Empire metal greatswords match up with the 8th ed plastics proportionally? Perhaps they will be a better fit to these Warlord Games ones....
-
I definitely think the scale of the metal 6th ed ones would align more to the Warlord plastics.
I see the 8th ed plastics aligning more to the 4th/5th ed metals.
-
That banner looks fabulous :) A fantastic looking unit for sure!
-

Is there a photo anywhere of the 6th ed greatswords alongside the Warlord ones? I couldn't find one in my search
Just a quick update showing off the paint scheme I have been thinking of using on the flagellants. I want them to look semi-coherent with the rest of the army, so figured a mainly white/cream scheme, with a bit of blue would work. Or should I switch it around and have them mainly blue with a little white?
-

Hows aboute half the unit one way, half the other?
-
Re: The warlord games kit, how did you deal with the little circular base the minis come on? Did you cut it off or disguise it with some base texturing?
Be interested to know the best approach, may have ordered a lot for my own uses...
-
Cut them off.
Found it easiest to clip everything off around the feet, and then just remove the last little bit each under each foot. A pain to do each one, but oh well.
Don't do yourself any injuries

I will try one with the colours swapped and see how it works out :smile2:
Finished up Gotrek and Felix, which I have had sitting around for a bit. Decided to base them up together, so that Felix could take up his customary position just behind and to the left of the slayer, to stop anyone getting round his flank :icon_cool: The tatts on Gotrek are a bit crap, but I can't freehand :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/HjVbYmN.jpg)

Awesome!!!
Thanks for the advice :biggriin:
Hope Gotrek brings you some wins. I suggest a Brian Blessed soundboard :icon_lol:

A tale of two Great Cannons :-P
Have had this one in my collection for an age. Lost the original engineer sadly, but Captain Steam Tank can fill in till I find a proper replacement. Top old kit. Not much more to say really. Even used some water effect in the bucket :icon_lol:
This plastic kit, however, was entirely new to me. It really struggles up against the old metal kit, and most likely suffers from being one of the earliest GW plastic kits like this. Had to use a lot of green stuff to cover up the seams where the bits went together (I didn't build it, its a rescue job from ebay), and the lack of texture on the wooden chassis is a bit underwhelming. But otherwise it scrubs up alright. I just infinitely prefer the old version.

What a nice looking pair of bangers :::cheers:::

Cheers
Am trying to get a couple of things finished up, but am always in danger of being distracted. Particularly when I nab something like this lot for next to nothing :engel:
I'll just put them in the pile that already includes LotR Orcs, 15mm medieval and god knows what else I still have lying around ready to paint :icon_redface:
-
collected a Epic Fantasy dwarf army but never played the game, later sold the army cause im an idiot
-
If its any consolation, and you want back in, Battle Valour produce an amazing 15mm dwarf range. I have a bunch here that are also on my never ending and always growing to-do list :eusa_wall:
-
Man that base blue you are using is awesome and really jumps out of the pictures. Really a nice looking choice of minis too.
I like how many of you mix the old lead figs with the new. Really creates a lot of character.
-
Garn, weather has been too crap to take photos :icon_mad:
I did get this finished and based up tho, to fill out my artillery train a but further :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/sEtrXXW.jpg)
Hope to have another full unit to show off soon. Just need to finish up the basing.
-
Love the hellblaster. One of my all time favourite models. I have 2, wish I had 5 lol
-
Another unit down; the Company of the Wolf (or somesuch :-P)
All non-GW, being a mix of Artizan, Foundry and Warlord Games minis, with Fireforge shields. I wanted them to be very regimented and think they capture that well.
Not nearly as showy as other Empire troops, but that kinda suits spearmen imo.
Am happy with how they came out (and that they are finished :icon_razz:). Will try and finish up a few odds and ends I have been working on, and aim towards putting up a pic of the whole army as it stands next.
-
Looks great, the shields are fab and so is the banner!
-
Excellent. :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Holy cow, you really crank out top notch painted miniatures. How did you do the banner?
-
Nah am not nearly that quick. I had been working on that unit, on and off, for over a month :-D
The banner is straight out of the Empire Uniforms and Heraldry book. Printed it out, painted over it and then gave it a very light wash/glaze (I mix the army painter washes with their quickshade medium about 50/50).
-
The way to churn out minis is not to do something else when you get bored on one unit but to hop onto another unit and paint a different colour :icon_cool:
Cool idea to photocopy and print the banners straight from the book. I've been referring to it pretty heavily for my own banners!
-
A wee update on the Halberd unit. It has seen some reinforcements, including the classic marauder mini on the front left. The banner has been repainted too now, to better fit the rest of the army. Am unsure of how much larger this unit will get, these guys are hard to find at reasonable prices (with good reason imo!). It still needs a champion the guy there now is just filling in :-P, I want the classic halberd champion who is holding his helmet for the job, but am yet to nab him online.
-
Beatiful unit!
I think 20 of these old beardy beauties already makes a very decent unit.
Of course it depends on the rules you want to use. But up to 5th ed and in many non-GW rules 20 is already a decent playable unit.
-Z
-
Fab!
-
Wow! I may have 2 or 3 halberdiers in storage if you want me to dig em out
-
Thanks for the offer but I'll be ok :::cheers:::
The time it takes for me to track down more on eBay gives me an opportunity to make some sort of dent in the rest of my pile on unpainted stuff :-D
-
I love those old metal halberdiers
-
I kick myself for not buying loads of those halberdiers (and foot Reiksguard) when they used to hang on the racks. I want some now, and geez, they are spendy.
-
There are a few things I have decided to not even bother attempting to collect owing to price/rarity. The Reiksguard are one of those. Anything Kislev is another :-P

I cant see any washes, which makes it even more impressive
-
There are a few, but no way near as many as you use :-P
I don't mind taking time over each mini. Have no real overall goal or target other than trying to paint each one as well as I can. Although in saying that, I did steal your idea of using a fine detail pen for dotting eyeballs. That saves a little time :icon_biggrin:
-
Have been able to get another unit done. Don't much like painting cavalry, so rushed through the horses to just get them done. These are, again, veeery old minis that I have had for decades, so they are a bit beat up and missing their original shields for the most part.
I think my greatest achievement was basing them so that they ranked up properly :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/GJMmUHU.jpg)
If the weather stays fine think it's finally time for a photo of the whole lot painted so far. Will see if I can manage a picture that it is halfway decent.
-
Looks good to me! :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Mmmm, yummy looking knights.
New empire knights are my #1 desire from the old world reboot!
-
Looks great :::cheers:::
Look forward to seeing so far painted together.
-
Am afraid I am no good at taking group photos, so this is the best I could come up with. If anyone can suggest a better setup for a poor scrub who doesn't have a light box, I am all ears :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/3Rivlaz.jpg)
Have loads of stuff in the works, but this seems a good start
-
Its looking like an army, congrats! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap:
-
Classic! This is like trip 25yrs Back. Just better painted. :smile2:
The photo is good. Would be hard to fit an army into most light boxes anyway.
-Z
-
Looking great! Do you plan to do some battle reports with your guys? :icon_wink:
I have to take a pic off all my painted empire stuff too...someday... :icon_confused:

Have never played a single game of Warhammer in my life :-P
These will be for the cabinet, and will likely never leave it
Although, that being said, was thinking I might work out the points value so far. Probably using the 4th edition army book...
-
that looks splendid! :::cheers:::
-
Excellent looking force, armies look exponentially better in large quantities. :::cheers:::
-
Thanks guys :::cheers:::
Something a wee bit special; the very first mini I ever owned. Still remember buying him with my pocket money :-P Dunno how common it is for people to hold onto their first ever mini, but I did. Can't say it's a great sculpt (or maybe even a very good one :-D), but obviously has a lot of sentimentality for me. And for that reason I intend for him to be my general. At least until I buy something far more impressive to replace him.....
-
I'm guessing he wasn't this well painted on first purchase! Magnificent looking job :eusa_clap:
-
Currently painting up some pistoliers and have a quick question; how do the 8th ed plastics mix with the earlier metal ones? If they look good I will grab a bunch of the latter to mix into the same unit.....
-
They don't mix too well. The plastic guys are on the big end of the scale (in particular the horses but to some extent the riders too). The metal pistoliers are on the small end, the riders are basically weedy teenagers. Nice models though, both versions. just don't mix them.
-
The "8th edition" were around during 7th edition.
They don't mix well with the older metals. I keep them in separate units.
-
Cheers guys :::cheers:::
Have decided to grab them. Will run two units of 6, with one being the plastics and one being the metals. Will try and convert one of the metal guys into a standard bearer. Will see how that goes....
This is the unit as it stands now.

-
Ca-ching! :::cheers::: :eusa_clap:
-
Another excellent unit
-
Cheers :::cheers:::
Was about to put a paniced order into GW and just seen they are shut down. Oh well. Time to clear out that backlog....
-
My "backlog" is so large, there's no way it's getting clear before the public health issue is over.
If looking for GW stuff, try a local outfit doing mail order. I found one in Mass that I'm buying a starter set for Warcry, maybe more.
-
Most sellers here in Oz get their GW product on order, so that pipeline has been turned off. So has MightyApe out of New Zealand.
No worries, have a fair bit still to work through. Did put in an order for more paints etc., and Warlord renaissance minis, so won't run short of projects :icon_mrgreen:
-
Pistoliers turned up today and dumped them straight into a bucket of dettol. Will be able to get a better look at them once they are stripped. Also working on the Warlord Games metal renaissance minis, some officers, handgunners and the looting party. All are absolutely fantastic, and I believe were sculpted by Paul Hicks back in the day, who is one of my favourite sculptors.
Unfortunately, can't start painting anything yet as I seem to have carpel tunnel or somesuch in my right hand for a week or so now :x Bit painful at the moment, but I think its clearing up, and will hopefully be able to crack on soon. A very (very) small inconvenience in the grand scheme of things right now, but still somewhat annoying I can't make the most out of working from home
-
Something of an update. My hand/wrist/elbow/whatever still isn't great so painting is still out of the question, but I can at least build stuff. Albeit slowly. Have about 4 regiments now assembled waiting to be painted.
But more to the point, picked up Volkmar on his little war altar, and have a question about the assembly. The steps which run up from the chassis to the pedestal don't line up properly at the top (circled below), with a gap on either side. Have I got something wrong, or is this how it is supposed to look? I could always use some pasticard or something to fill in the gaps either side, because it seems a bit odd....
-
Hmm... I have never put this particular kit together, so I can't say. But I do love the rest of your work so far! Keep it up. :::cheers:::
-
Got an unbuilt set removed from sprues, but it's so deep I can't test fit the pieces now.
How unhelpful can a post be? I hope someone catches the torch here...
-Z
-
My kit is completely unopened, so I can't be helpful. I couldn't see using it in my Averland army, didn't fit the fluff, yet got it on sale at 50% off retail at the time. In fact, I was contemplating giving it away and still might.
-
Just a brief note to keep this thread belatedly alive. The problem with my elbow seems to have finally healed, so am now just about capable of wielding a brush in anger once more.
Unfortunately the self enforced break has to led to a pretty unfortunate situation. I was once quite happy with how things were progressing, in particular in keeping a limit in the ratio between painted and unpainted minis. Suffice to say the latter has now far outstripped the former
Am currently in the process of stripping et al, but once it is all assembled will update with a pic of where things stand. Am more than a little embarrassed by my over indulgence in metal and plastic crack tbh :-P
-
Seems like your situation is improving, and welcome back! :::cheers:::
-
Have a query actually.
Does anybody have any advice, or could point me in the direction of a guide, about greenstuff molds?
Amongst my recently acquired horde are a bunch of these, and I'd like to make a few more to use on the infantry that otherwise have great swords, as I think they are much better.
Shouldn't be too hard to do, hopefully, as only the front really needs to be done. Any suggestions?

well, you do want a backside on that sword, no?
I had the same issue a while back. Didn't like the plug-in version of the greatswords and didn't have enough of the sword and shield parts. I ended up kitbashing with GW plastic swords and shields. Basically filled in the plug-in hole, put the sword+hand on the right arm stump, and glued a shield over the left arm stump to cover up most of the butchery. Simple!
-
Have you ever used blue stuff thermo mold. It is a reusable plastic that gets malleable when you put it in hot water. It is cheap and really easy to work with and green stuff wont stick to it. Heres a link to green stuff world, http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/reusable-blue-stuff/2-blue-stuff-mold-4-bars.html. They have videos on how to make single layer and two layer molds with it.

Yes, I was putting a mock mold together last night when I realised that would be an issue. Should be easily fixable as long the shield, hilt and hand can be replicated I can use a blade from elsewhere to finish the job. Looking at what I have sitting around, will likely want to make about 10 of the things, and I really like the boss on that shield :-P
Will check out the link below. Was looking at Greenstuffworld, but missed that.
-
Success! Of sorts.....
It looks pretty good (for a first ever attempt anyway). Detail on the embossing is a bit ill-defined, but otherwise it seems to have worked out
(https://i.imgur.com/W4Y7UXZ.jpg)
A second option is to use the wolf shields I have left over from the spearmen. Easier, but quite a bit bigger, so not exactly bucklers anymore....
Hmm. Think I will try and persevere with the first method....
-
Wow! Nice job with the shield and sword! Definitely go with the first
-
Awesome thread. Very clean painting and bright colours!
I love the old metal Empire range and should really find some time to get back to painting more of them.
-
Cool project!
Personally I like the wolf shields better, but they do indeed lose that "buckler" feeling, so maybe its better to go with the first option!
-
Cheers guys :-P
The sword and buckler production line is proceeding well. Have found you really need to mash in the green stuff to ensure all the detail on the shield is picked up. Will paint one up soon, just to ensure it works out in practice. If so, have a greater challenge ahead. Will need to actually sculpt some detail onto the shield, to cover the area that is cut off by the sword for a handful of those old metal mini swordsmen, i.e these guys;
Anyway, this is the pile of unpainted shame as it stands, in a slightly blurry pic, but should be able to pick out most of the stuff that is there. This isn't even all of it, still have about 4 more cannons, a unit of outriders, some of the mounted heroes etc. to still add. Ran out of bases in the end so have had to order more  Probably not even a shadow of what some people on here have in their collection, but far more unpainted minis than I ever really wanted at one time. Is a bit intimidating to get started on....
-
That is a nice collection of painting backlog :-) Which is much less then what I have lying around (or hidden away, stored in boxes,...).
-
First painting I have done in months. Looking at the pics, I need to go back and fix a few little things, like faces. But its good to be back into it again :-P
The first sword and buckler guys. The two in the middle are with the green stuffed shields.
And my first four Reiksguard. Having finished, decided I don't like the shields, so instead I am going to hunt down some ornate resin shields which I hope might do a better job.
That'll take time to find and arrive, so instead am now beavering away on the Teutogen regiment. Hope to have it finished up completely soon to show.
-
What don't you like about the shields of the Reiksguard? Not enough golden trim? I do like their simple look, just like the shields of old would have been.
-
This army is top notch!
-
Cheers :::cheers:::
And as for the shields, Reiksguard mini are so rare and expensive these days, kinda feel that they deserve a little extra bling. Have put an order in for some shields. Think they are based on Space Marine stormshields, so no idea quite how large they are. In anycase, they ain't gonna arrive for sometime, so will need to put those guys on the back burner for the moment.
-
You've got some good stuff in here. Really like those latest painted models. The GS shields turned out nice. I am always jealous of guys with fot reiksguard in their armies. I got into WFB too late to pick up at reasonable prices.
-
First new regiment done. Managed to crack through at (for me) a record pace.
Was a bit unsure as to how well they will fit in with the look of the rest of the army, which is generally very neat and colourful, and these guys ain't, but they should do fine.
Only thing remaining to be done is the lettering on the other side of the banner. Tried freehand. Failed. Decided to leave it for now :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/H4BB9NP.jpg)
Am gonna reward myself with a character mini for finishing these guys so fast :-D
-
Well done! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
I think they will fit right in with the blue on the insides of their cloaks somehow I never thought of that before!
-
Well, on second thoughts, I could have chosen an easier character to relax with.....
Mainly wanted to avoid making him look like a Christmas tree, with too many colours, which I think I have avoided, but am still not completely happy with the overall result. The banner was just one I had lying around from a previous project, and in hindsight I don't think it fits. Hmm. Also not happy with the banner pole, which was a salvage job after it arrived broken. Will call him done for now, but one I definitely will have to come back to when further inspiration strikes.

-
Beautiful paintjob. The banner is truly outstanding.
-Z
-
What are you talking about JoV? This is a gorgeous looking paintjob.....leave him as is :::cheers:::
-
Its more whether it fits the rest of the army, particularly as all the other banners are blue and white.....
Am thinking now it might be an opportunity to add a bit of a mercenary theme to a unit or two. Did some experimenting around with it last night, and have some ideas that might work.....
-
Love that , best ive seen of that model
-
Beautiful!
-
fantastic!!
-
Very nice. May I ask where the wolf shields came from?
Thank you

The mercenary regiment I was thinking about.

The Pavise shields are also leftovers from a previous project. Didn't work so well on realistic 28mm minis. Work a lot better on heroic scale :-P
Fwiw, I have a whole bunch of movement trays on order that are yet to arrive (the one used here is again from another project). When they do, will base up the edge of the tray to match the minis methinks.
-
Well done, huzzah! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Lovely work! I really like the shields!
-
NICE!!! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

Small update. The staff head broke off on this guy and rather than try and repair it, decided to use it as an opportunity to convert him into an amethyst wizard. Always good to make use of every mini you have :-D
Would quiz people as to where I got the familiar from, but with the knowledge on here am guessing its not a terribly difficult question to some :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/YYRymeZ.jpg)
-
Awesome swordsmen and that wizard is ace. Love the familiar
-
Zacharias the dude who rode the zombie dragon ?
-
Yup, that's the one :::cheers:::
Still have the rest of that mini, but my cat has chewed on the dragons wings :eusa_wall:
-
Hey JoV - I just realised your are based in Australia. I will be going through some old models to sell - I was going to post on ebay, but if you are interested I can give you first dibs. Let me know, and I will see what I’ve got during the week!
-
Sounds good. Would be interested to see what you have :smile2:
-
Spent the weekend painting up this guy. Actually, since he is completely resin, spent the weekend mostly cleaning, prepping and assembling this guy....
Not the biggest fan of working with resin, bit fiddly for something like this, but he looks pretty good. Better than the GW Cockatrice anyway :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/eOi2Vff.jpg)
-
I'd use Agrax Earthshade on everything but the black parts to give it more depth and connect the individual parts. The way you painted the eyes to give him this angry look is great! :eusa_clap:
Who's the manufacturer?
-
ttcombat, You did an amazing job on the cockatrice. :eusa_clap:
-
Yup, that's the one. I went in hard on their Kickstarter, but the prospect of working with so much resin has meant a lot of it has sat in a box for some time (discovered the hard way their resin needs to be washed and scrubbed minimum twice, or the primer will just slough off ). Have been going through and rebasing/touching up what I did get done so that it fits in with this army. Will post pics when the weather improves. It's horrendous right now ::heretic::
-
First set of halflings based up. I went back and gave them a blue/white scheme so they fit in with the rest of the army. Otherwise they are all over the place, but its not in a halflings nature to wear uniform :smile2:
-
Halflings for the win! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
Very nice!
-
Awesome new additions mate :::cheers:::
-
Am now having the complete opposite problem with the weather. It has been so glorious I am finding it difficult to face sitting inside and working on my painting, when I could be outside reading in the sun :-P
So very little new progress has been made. That will all change soon enough when it gets too hot to be anywhere but inside though ::heretic::
I am, however, facing an existential question. One which I have pondered for some time. So I thought to see what input others might have.
What would you pay (in your local currency is fine, although mine is Aus$) for a complete War Wagon? I have always wanted one, but am honestly unable to decide what I think one should be worth :-D
-
Well, I'm back
(https://i.imgur.com/Nf0YpLr.jpg)
My attention was swallowed by another long running hobby project. Erm, ship building
(https://i.imgur.com/Lh7uXt5.jpg)
But I have now jumped back on the Empire train once more. I cannot make any grandiose promises as to future ventures. At the moment I am just painting whatever takes my fancy and seeing where it takes me. But I do want to make a serious dent in my unpainted pile of stuff :engel:
For starters, have put together these guys. Just a small fraction of the overall unit, but ten minis means I can feel like I have accomplished something
(https://i.imgur.com/WotVkh6.jpg)
And a character. I never understood the crow. Is it real? Is it mechanical? Just seems so odd to have a crow sitting there :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/begUFwL.jpg)
More to come :::cheers:::
-
Ha! It's a pigeon. Looks like you've painted yours dark gray, congrats! :icon_mrgreen: :::cheers:::

A pigeon would make sense....and mean a precious opportunity to paint up my very own Speckled Jim was lost, but the 6th ed army book has me all sorts of confused :?

(I don't play so no idea of which ed that might have been though!)

Just a random Warlord Games handgunner. Some quite good sculpts in their metal minis, and i like this one particularly

The Master Engineer was introduced in the 6th ed Empire book in 2000. They didn't have the option of the Pigeon Bomb until the 7th ed, when they also got the Mechanical steed (option/model).
The classic Master Engineer models were introduced along with the 6th ed book. That book, on p. 14, shows a Master Engineer shooting a Hochlander Long Rifle with a raven on his shoulder. The Repeater Pistol model also clearly has a raven on his shoulder, not a pigeon. I'm pretty sure this picture or another like it has influenced the model with a raven. However the bird was not painted as a raven (nor pigeon), but golden-brown.
As to why raven, I don't know. Could be that ravens are intelligent and curious birds with keen eyesight. And they seem to like solitude to a degree. All aspects the Master Engineers might hold in esteem. Maybe raven was a thing among the artists - illustrators and sculptors - of GW, even if the official lore talked about a hawk for Aldebrand and later about pigeons for the Master Engineers? Odinn was symbolized by (a pair of) ravens, and he was a god of wisdom and cunning, and war and death. Maybe that influenced the artists and sculptors in the studio when they visualized the Master Engineers?
Why did the 7th ed Empire General kit come with a raven sitting on the KF shield? Why not a hawk, as the Bret KotR champion? Are ravens somehow connected to the Empire or Altdorf?
Even the original studio painting of the Aldebrand Ludenhof model, carrying what is a hawk according to the lore, showed a black bird with silver grey beak - not so much a hawk as a raven.
.
.
.
Interestingly, even the 8th ed illustration of a Master Engineer in the Empire book has a golden mechanical (decorative? clockwork?) raven on his shoulder. So how did the raven turn from a living bird into a golden artifact? What does that symbolize?
-Z
-
Fair enough, raven it is.
P.S. I would love GW to give us a big fatass woodpigeon! :biggriin:
-
smooth :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
-
Many thanks Zygmund. I have no idea what a raven symbolises in this context. Has GW ever mentioned anything about their use in Empire iconography or the similar previously? Must admit I am not across all the fluff so it would easily have missed me by if they have......
I have just finished moving house, which now means I have a proper space for modelling, and can set my armies up on display (as opposed to hiding them in shoe boxes....). I couldn't even hazard a guess as to how complete my Empire army is. Not very :-D as even if I have nothing to work on, I will always be going back and retouching stuff.
-
Have been beavering away, mostly painting whatever takes my fancy (have loads of unfinished units to pick from...), such as finishing a few more of the Warlord handgunners
(https://i.imgur.com/kG5JIkv.jpg)
But the main accomplishment was finishing this unit of flagellants. Deliberately tried to not spend too much time on them. Just wanted them done :-P I thought that Johan (I think that is his name?) fits into unit well, even if he is a bit small in comparison
(https://i.imgur.com/hUt87JC.jpg)
-
I quite like the handgunners, congrats! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
The Flagellants look mean, and Johann fits there perfectly!
Those are Warlord's ex-Pro Gloria metal handgunners? Very good detail and nice puff and slash. Your painting makes them shine.
Your army is grand, pure pleasure to look at. Truly you're keeping the Empire flag flying! :smile2:
-Z
-
For something different this weekend, painted up these characters from a TTcombat kickstarter. Had them sitting around for ages, so figured I could hand them out at work as Christmas presents. Looking forward to the reactions from some of them :-P

Those look wonderful, congrats! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

Does anyone have a recommendation of good armoured pegasus mini that fits a metal Empire hero? I always wanted the Marauder pegasus but it is very rare (and expensive) these days, so looking for a suitable alternate if one exists?
For example this looks interesting, but I have no idea of scale (and I would prefer an armoured version)
http://www.gamezoneminiatures.com/tienda/en/monsters-and-machines/321-pegaso-de-la-luz.html
Similarily the Wargames Foundry Pegasi could be tiny, I have no idea!
https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/products/pegasus-5-wg436b
-
Is the Empire Pegasus armored?
I'd say Gamezone tends to be very similarly sized to Games Workshop. The Pegasus figure is based on normal cavalry base. I think you can compare it to GW figures on similar bases.
Didn't know that Foundry had a Pegasus. Yes, I'd be wary about their size. Foundry tends to be smaller, 'real' 28mm or even a bit smaller.
Have you checked Fireforge Pegasus Knights?
https://fireforge-games.com/albion/267-pegasus-knights.html (https://fireforge-games.com/albion/267-pegasus-knights.html)
They might be a tad bit lighter built than the old GW Pegasi, but the Fireforge ones have exactly the same kind of horse warp or 'barding', if that was what you were after. Plastic, of course.
Check out the Reaper Miniatures metal Paladin on Pegasus:
https://www.reapermini.com/search/pegasus/latest/03096 (https://www.reapermini.com/search/pegasus/latest/03096)
It looks quite heavy and actually has armor, but the price comes close to the old Marauder Pegasus.
-Z
-
Cheers, the reaper one looks the ticket. Although I will probably remove most of the lightning bolt design of the armour. I very rarely see the Marauder era pegasus in the wild, and when I do it is usually going for stupid money :eusa_wall:
The final Halfing minis painted up
(https://i.imgur.com/lVRLSdK.jpg)
And I went round shopping for Empire appropriate minis in the Black Friday sales. First to arrive are these from Knightmare Games. Very happy with the look of them
(https://i.imgur.com/eC0aCvq.jpg)
-
Those do look good. The one on the left seems familiar yet not sure why. Don't recognize the one on the right.
I see the grave robbing (?) halfling has received a bit of a surprise. :icon_eek:
-
Interesting that you gave winter basing to one of the halflings.
Those Knightmare Hunters are superb figurines. Very reminiscent of the style of Mordheim figurines. Got them too, but not in my painting queue atm.
-Z
-
It's a Christmas miracle. I finally finished this thing. Took about a month, there or thereabouts. Very happy with it, but would not want to do another one. So much teeny detail to pick out. Remind me to never add the Huricanum, or whatever it is called, to my collection ::heretic::
Volkmar is magentised, so I can remove him and have him on his own base
(https://i.imgur.com/bZ5r60G.jpg)
Meaning I can replace with him with a Wolf Shaman from Puppetswar, which is, I think, my preferred look. The wolves, fwiw, seemed an obvious inclusion, as they are the right scale and let me use the horses as mounts for other characters
(https://i.imgur.com/WAP9ygp.jpg)
-
Great job :eusa_clap:
I regret not picking up some more of those Hurricanum kits when they were openly available
-
That looks fantastic! The wolves are a really nice alteration to the kit, and work well with the theme!
I really wish this was still readily available as I really want one, without paying exorbitant ebay prices
-
Quite the modeling and painting there, congrats! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
That turned out awesome.
-
Latest regiment; some imperial dwarfs from the Assault Group. Super quick and easy to paint, which is just how I like my minis :-P

Great work! I love the little tower on the banner.

Those do look wonderful! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:

Cheers guys.
Two more characters. A witch hunter (one of the White Knight minis isn't it?
And the spare war priest from the War Altar kit
(https://i.imgur.com/uRS5GVh.jpg)
I used a 40k storm shield on him. Its a bit cumbersome, but he will just have to deal with it
(https://i.imgur.com/nayG2ao.jpg)
-
And handling a monster war hammer with one hand. :icon_eek: :::cheers:::

Currently have a little bit of time of work, so keen to plough through a lot of outstanding projects. For instance these, Wargames Atlantic spiders. These are to join a new army that will be arriving sometime soon. The web effects are from Green stuff gaming
(https://i.imgur.com/l6BrYM5.jpg)
However this will take the majority of my time going forwards methinks. Tabletop World, picked up during their Black Friday sale. Very keen to get stuck in, but also a little intimidated.

Tabletop World is very detailed with their models. Very.

Love the Dwarf spearmen!
Those Tabletop World buildings are beautiful. Keen to see them them painted.

I've been on leave the past week, and my aim was to get as much done as possible :biggriin:
Final update of the week's work are these guys. My aim is to paint up three connected armies in conjunction over this year. The empire is naturally the main emphasis, and I am aiming to build up the walled town, on the edges of the Drakenhof, they will be defending as I go. The second army is what those spiders above belong to. And these will be in the third army.

This thread is filled with glorious models. That war altar! Just wow
-
I like the beastmen! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

Very good stuff, well done!
-
outstanding
-
Have been beavering away on the second building, a merchant shop. This is it so far. Still a ways to go
(https://i.imgur.com/5xKLGsf.jpg)
For a break, I put this together, with a classic forest gobbo for scale. The trees were 3d printed, not by me but by a retailer. Was really disappointed with the quality of them, but figured if I covered them in spider webs it would be all the same :engel:
-
I like both of them, congrats! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

Very nice! How did you do the webs?

Very nice! How did you do the webs?
yeah ?

With this stuff
https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/spider-serum/694-spider-serum.html
-
Very impressive stuff but not an effect I would use often, plus I don’t have an airbrush.
When I made this witch I borrowed a piece of Halloween web decoration from a neighbour’s garden which worked better than my attempt with ‘normal’ cotton wool.

-
I imagine yours is far sturdier than this stuff, which would be destroyed if you touched it. I don't mind as it will only sit in a cabinet.
-
Impressive work on the house. Like your painting, this time especially the unit of Dwarfs.
Please, paint & post more often!
-Z
-
Cheers. This is the work so far on the second one. I want a base for it all to sit on. Having looked at a few options, making one myself seems to be the way to go, but not something I have tried before
(https://i.imgur.com/tWz1WAi.jpg)
-
Looks fabulous as is!
Love all the barrels, containers and veggies upfront!
:icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Perfect!
When basing your terrain, make sure you use materials that do not warp when the moisture/paste/glue dries. MDF and plastic are safe, but wood, cardboard and many other stuff isn't.
-Z
-
Update on progress on the beastmen. Working through their new box set. I will be back to Empire shortly :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/DLx7goA.jpg)
-
I presume that the guys with spears are the regular troops, and the guys with axes are a step up?
Obviously the big dude is more than a step up.
I have an set of the figures that came in the GW black box back in the day.
-
Ungors are the weediest guys. Next to them are Bestigors, the biggest of the normal minis (I also have some Gors, who are in the middle and not yet painted).
Dragon Ogre in the back. Or Ogor as GW call them these days
-
Thanks for the name reminders!
Also, I like the winter theme to your bases. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
Are you going to be using the Beasts for WFB, W:AoS, or as a way to get ready for the return of the Old World :icon_question:
-
Not meant for any specific system, they are just intended to be the fluffy opponents of my Empire army. Somewhere in the Drakwald (haven't yet decided exactly on a location where my guys are based tbh) the beastmen come out in the winter, whilst the Forest Gobbos will raid otherwise :-P
-
TTCombat currently have a kickstarter going, which made me realise I have never shown off my full painted collection of their stuff. Easily fixed
(https://i.imgur.com/vwwKECJ.jpg)
I had originally intended the halflings to join the Empire army, but decided they didn't fit, lacking the requisite fancy clothing, and so instead are now part of a combined 'nature' army instead. I will pick up some properly attired halflings to go in the Empire army down the line. The ones the Assualt Group sell look a good fit.
Fwiw, I am thinking my single one 'tell' of whether the Old World reboot will click with me or not is whether it finds room for Halflings in it. They didn't fit 8th edition, and I cannot imagine (with what very little I know of it) they would fit in Sigmar. But a fantasy setting that cannot find room for the humble halfling feels wrong to me.
-
I like that army! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
Don't believe halflings will be a prominent force in the launch of Warhammer: The Old World. Perhaps something provided further down that line as an expansion or some such. I can't imagine that with all the computer focus on Cathay & Kislev that those armies won't be new releases and likely seen very early on in the new launch. And probably Bretonnia and Tomb Kings too.
-
Oh yeah, I don't expect minis. At least not straight away. But I do hope they exist in the setting, and play at least a somewhat active role in it much as they used to.
The setting moved away so much from what it used to be that I cannot imagine halfings in the old world of 8th edition. I hope, like Blood Bowl, they can find a proper home for them again.
-
I will have a full regiment finished up soon, but in the meantime I painted Mr Gamgee up today for a friend
(https://i.imgur.com/KNZpA6P.jpg)
-
He looks very good! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

That is a neat army of nature. Very cool. I would expect halflings to feature as much in warhammer as they always have, a minor unit or two as part of Empire or Dogs of War. Although I suppose if the TOW is more like AOS in terms of splitting factions more and more, maybe there would a sort of battalion box...available for all of six months before they move on to the next thing.
-
And finally back to the Empire proper, with a full regiment completed. The leader in the front rank is from Knightmare Miniatures. Just a very simple sword swap and he fits perfectly imo
(https://i.imgur.com/7EG5SHs.jpg)
And I working on multiple units at once, amongst them this guy. Who i finally caved and paid an honestly silly amount of money to finally acquire. He came with the throne, which I am painting up seperatly, but not the original rider. i have plans for a replacement there
(https://i.imgur.com/AFAxj4p.jpg)
-
Great job so far.
I love the market stall items.
I've been tempted to add to my plague beasts with the new beast men box sets but have put it aside as i believe my plague beast army is big enough
-
Lovely work on the greatswords, nice, clean and crisp paintwork there my friend :::cheers:::.
-
Mighty work!
-Z
-
Thanks for the comments :-P
I went back and painted up 8 of the plastic greatswords to add to the unit, brining it up to 40 strong. I have a few left over, but that'll do methinks
(https://i.imgur.com/T5kJOZ7.jpg)
Also got a box of the Wargames Atlantic Ogres. Here is the first one complete next to some friends for scale. I really like this set. Looking forward to painting up the rest
(https://i.imgur.com/GN3vSzg.jpg)
-
Those ogres have a lot of old fashioned character to them, and seem very well done.
-
nice paintjobs on the ogres!
I do like the new plastic landsknecht ogres too. just wish the faces were a bit more brutish like GW ogres tend to be (e.g. his chaps to the left and right). This guy's face reminds me of American Dad cartoons with that chiseled jawline.
-
Completed pegasus and rider. Is General Rutger I believe. Was a pain to get him to fit, but worth it in the end. Just a standard historical banner with a wolf decal attached. Works well enough :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/25PVjO4.jpg)
-
Excellent! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:
-
Excellent work. That is Rutgar indeed. The throne is something else. Poor pegasus.
-
A mortar complete. I never liked how this old one sat flush on the ground, so I added some wee little wheels, which I quite like :biggriin:
Base is borrowed from another war machine as I am waiting on more to arrive. So it is not sitting properly, but will be when they turn up eventually.

The wheels look great! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
Although when that baby goes off, it's rolling backwards ... :icon_lol:

Two thumbs up. Thats how its done!

My Easter weekend painting task complete with a few hours to spare. Very happy with it too :-P

And a scale pic. In my head cannon the locals keep the giant plied with food and alchohol, and in return it joins in to drive off raiding gobbos and beastmen. Can't see why it would like them any more than humans would...
-
Very cool. You pulled it off, that giant looks perfect for an empire army.
-
Well done!
-
Not a super exciting update today. A skirmish base for some archers. Have been meaning to get this done for a while
(https://i.imgur.com/tG3FP9Q.jpg)
And I picked up a new in box set of imperial knights. First time I have ever seen one of those kits. First point of order was trying to figure out how to make use of the White Wolf upgrade sprues. Ultimately decided to kitbash some with some Perry plastic men at arms. Usually do not like mixing such obviously different scales, but I think it works, and I wanted something wearing a tabard to match the cloth on the white wolf arms. Just aiming for a small regiment of 10, but also considering adding some Frostgrave wolves to them as well.

THAT IS INSANELY NICE!

Much appreciated :::cheers:::
A query. Does anyone know of where you are able to buy the Bruegelburg line of minis? Some stuff in there I really like the look of, in particular the sharp shooters, but I cannot find them for sale anywhere except from this German site which does not ship outside of Europe it seems
https://www.miniaturicum.de/?k=888&lang=eng
-
My artillery park as it stands. This is about...half of what I have to do
-
Great job on the artillery. Its Golden Demon worthy stuff
Even if they miss the targets, they'll atleast deafen the enemy
-
Looking grand! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:
-
Nice work and collection of artillery!
Do you use washes, e.g. Agrax Earthshade for the faces?
-
I do yeah. Army Painter soft tone.
Finally finished this regiment. Had been haunting me for a couple of years. I really, really, dislike this state troop minis. Am hoping Old World will finally see them retired and replaced by something(anything) else. So I am glad to finally have ticked this off my todo list :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/hSlmszN.jpg)
-
Well done! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
They're a pain to rank up, and the bodies are actually monopose with various armour and other pieces. So whatever you do, your choices of posing and positioning are very limited.
-Z
-
Great work! The standard bearer is an excellent addition to the unit.
-
Just a single mini, but one I really liked. Warlord Games. Paul Hicks sculpted possibly? Will likely add him to a siege engine crew
(https://i.imgur.com/CN9xlKY.jpg)
-
Excellent! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:
And those swordsmen are another wonderful addition ot the army, congrats! :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::
-
Another single mini. Experimenting around with some different paint schemes. I have no idea about colour theory, so found this combination online. Seems to work with green as the third colour.
-
I guess if a hard tackle doesn't kill him, lung cancer will.
-
Latest regiment completed. Some Whte Knight minis mixed in there, and they fit really well
(https://i.imgur.com/e75H39T.jpg)
-
Great color scheme, congrats! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Great looking unit! Well done!
-
Many thanks. A single mini again this, a classic Witch Hunter
(https://i.imgur.com/DZpJMlK.jpg)
-
Those Knights are brilliant. I love your sharp painting style.
-
Love the witch hunter, especially the stripes and the interesting base you created.
-
How i mis the simplistic style of those old miniatures.
This day and age its all 'leg on top of rock and billiowing hard-to-paint robes'
-
That unit looks great. Well done!
-
With Wood Elves confirmed for Old World, couldn't resist starting to rebase some of my guys in anticipation. I think the elves look much better on the larger bases tbh
(https://i.imgur.com/PxaqNKy.jpg)
-
^ Agreed. Makes them look like they're at home with their surroundings
-
When a base is larger, then it can start to become more dioramic. :icon_cool: :eusa_clap:
-
Love those larger bases!
-
Reiskguard knights, with classic Kurt Helborg. I don't consider this unit finished yet. It needs a standard bearer at the least. I also used one knight from the box of 8 to make a musician for my knights panther unit, which is still also not quite finished
(https://i.imgur.com/fBlUVvO.jpg)
-
Snazzy! :icon_biggrin: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Lovely!
-
Love the Reiksguard unit. Properly shiny and feathered. :-)
-Z
-
I have shown these guys off before, but they are now finished, complete with command group and movement tray
(https://i.imgur.com/WW5FBPS.jpg)
And a wizard. I got this in a ebay lot, and really didn't didn't like the original head (it was the very conical one), so I replaced it with one from a resin mini I had sitting round which works much better
(https://i.imgur.com/HXzUCA4.jpg)
-
Am I seeing Warlord landsknechts there? The alternate head for the wizard is a good choice.
And this painting is continuingly well done. Ace on the basing too. :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Great hob :eusa_clap:
-
Warlord minis, yeah, including the metal ones up front. Some of which are from their looting set, which are very fun minis.
-
Sorry, that was meant to be 'great job'
-
Some classic plastic dwarfs, painted up as some mercanaries for the army. Very straightforward. Am attempting something a wee bit more ambitious next
(https://i.imgur.com/0klBgiy.jpg)
-
Proper dwarfish Dwarfs!
Have painted plenty of these swayback Dwarfs for my 6th ed Dwarf army over the past year. And still got some more on my painting desk.
Dwarfs with crossbows make probably the least efficient mercenaries for the Empire, because they have no special skill relating to the crossbow, and even their unit champion is a fighter more than a shooter. Very expensive for what they do. Of course if you give them shields (in the 6th ed) they might stand up against a (depleted) light cavalry flanker or some skirmishers, with T4 and AS 4+. Something the Empire crossbowmen can never achieve. Could be a nasty surprise.
-Z
-
A real blend of old and new. Am guessing roughly 30 years seperate these minis (1992-2022?).
Really wanted an excuse to paint a dragon, and the original horse the Tzarina rides seemed a little dull. Actually found a good mount difficult to come by, so a sigmar version it was. Had to do a wee bit of clipping of the original mini to make it work, always anxiety inducing with such a classic sculpt, but it all comes together I think
(https://i.imgur.com/Tbco5fB.jpg)
-
Lovely!
-
I finished a Tzarina earlier in the year. I screwed up her horse but i'll replace it if i get the chance
P.S Great job
-
Working on a few different things at once, so not made much actual progress. I did paint a halfling blood bowl player though :icon_lol:
-
Is the soup strainer a separate accessory or is the head sculpted like that?
-
Its sculpted like that.
Like a lot of modern GW kits, you do not get many (or any really) options in how you build them.
-
^ Thats what annoys me about so many of the current kits.
I loved the old Empire state troops and Militia box sets as there were so many ways to build them.
I don't like many of the new kits as the mini's are overly fiddley, sculpted in odd poses and usually have robes, tassels and or cloaks which need to be painted separately.
Whoever decided that coat tails and cloaks NEED to be separate pieces should be boiled alive!
-
Sorry to be going off topic a bit here but I agree to some extent with Rowsdower about the current range of figures.
I’m not a great fan of digital sculpting, it doesn’t have the organic flow of traditional hand sculpted figures but from the manufacturers point of view it allows for much finer detailing and more unconventional joints to be formed to create interesting poses – so most units and warbands are now designed so everyone has to build exactly the same interesting boring set of posed figures.
Being a converter I don’t mind the separate cloaks etc. because these make cutting these newer figures up much easier but the thin and fineness of modern parts does make it harder to get a good join at times.
{Edit} just picked up the Space Marine Miniature of the Month. The body and legs are in two halves; Why? It can’t save much plastic by not being solid, and that’s countered by more sprue for an extra part plus it has a sculpted base. There are no sculpted under cuts that couldn’t have been made on a solid part so its not done for aesthetic reasons.
The halfling Bloodbowl team is not a true example of this as it is basically two sets of 6 pre-posed figures with the option of 12 different heads – bring back the Empire troopers with separate legs, torso, arms and heads – so many options.
Never made an Airfix kit Rowsdower? I seem to remember their instruction told you to paint every thing before you cut it off the sprue.
-
The Blood Bowl kits are particularly egregious in that respect, but I suspect it may also be a function of GW trying to save money by ensuring they only need one sprue per box.
I hold out a forlorn hope that Old World may see a return to the old school approach of sprues, better suited to rank and file miniatures. However I cannot really see them moving away from what has become a deepseated practice of monopose minis (and I have box of their new orks, so know all about it sadly).
-
I have a fleet of old Airfix kits. Some of the old aircraft kits I've amassed over the years are from the 60's.
I usually paint the pilot while he's on the sprue and the rest in sub assembles.
I just miss the day's of straightforward mini sculpts. WHY does GW's current sculpt team insist on turning EVERY miniature into a character from a Georgean era battlefield painting. WHAT IS THE DEAL with all the 'tactical rocks' everyone tends to have a foot raised on?
P.S I'm sorry about the boiling alive comment.
-
Another small regiment, although I have shown off a few previously. All Warlord Games, a mix of metal and plastic
(https://i.imgur.com/hM4P54h.jpg)
-
After retaining focus for a good while, I am afraid I have lapsed. Oh well. It is fun, at least, to work with some different colours
(https://i.imgur.com/3vqHEUq.jpg)
-
Change is good.
I like nothing more than working on something bright and colourful, in between Shermans and Warhawks.
-
Those handgunners are spot on.
Congrats!
-
Mostly still been painting Dark Eldar, but this weekend got back to something a little closer to the Old World; some medieval archers. Mix of Footsore metals and Gripping Beast plastics. I have some Victrix Vikings on the way as well :closed-eyes:
-
Great job.
I see one of the peasants has earned enough coin to buy a suit of mail
-
Dark Age archers complete. They are ok. Was mostly an opportunity to experiment with different paint schemes/basing
(https://i.imgur.com/HvMiPh0.jpeg)
But they are absolutely blown out of the water by the Victrix Vikings which also arrived recently. Wow. They are probably the best plastics I have ever seen. I painted this guy as a one off, and am really happy how he came out with honestly very little effort
(https://i.imgur.com/UYjA4Y1.jpeg)
-
Well done with the Dark Age archers!
Yes, the Victrix Vikings play in their own league. Their Norman knights too.
-Z
-
very nice, especially the viking. Those transfers are great too. Came with the box?
-
Ooh. Heady goodness
-
Great model and an awesome paintjob.
-
very nice, especially the viking. Those transfers are great too. Came with the box?
No, you have to buy them separately. Littlebigmen studios
First batch done. Decided to multibase these
(https://i.imgur.com/eXOWu9W.jpg)

Love those shields.
-
Sorry for the lack of updates. Have been painting non-empire things. Like, er, Night Lords! The Empire bug will bite again before long though.
-
Looking forward to seeing more! Love your painting style!
-
More Night Lords, including a dreadnought. Loveable scamps they are really :-P
(https://i.imgur.com/g9mgCCQ.jpg)
Some very old skeleton warrior shield bosses thrown in there
(https://i.imgur.com/tt34MZz.jpg)
-
Am i the only one suprised that much of the fan base dosnt know that the Night lords Primarch is a parody of Batman
-
I know next to nothing about the history of 40k (always being a fantasy nerd), but it wouldn't surprise if that was the case back when GW was very tongue-in-check, and they have subsequently tried their best to forget it ever happened as they tried to make the setting more grimdark.
Latest work
(https://i.imgur.com/cqhFDYl.jpg)
-
Have to apologise for the lack of updates. Is not from any lack of work on my behalf, but because it has all been in service of non empire (or even fantasy) related things like Night Lords
(https://i.imgur.com/LwAnl3k.jpg)
And now sisters of battle
(https://i.imgur.com/nIodBnv.jpg)
The empire/fantasy urge will return. Soon. Ish. Possibly
-
How does everyone paint the new Sisters kits. I have a few and I've put them on hold as i'm unsure if i can paint their legs with those pesky, billowing robes being in the way
-
They are very fiddly, but not overly so like some other GW kits. I quite like them, but they do take time to paint. Took about a week to do their rhino
(https://i.imgur.com/4F6l6xH.jpg)
Also painted up some random minis for Christmas presents. The mouse cleric is from dark sword minis and is easily my favourite.

Lovely work!

Just some more random Christmas presents painted up. Is nice to do some different things, try out new approaches and clear out a bit of the back log

Is that a Dough boy?
Didn't the U.K troops have vertical pouches?
-
Love the wizard on dragon ... a wonderful painting effort made on that, congrats!
Those landsknecht handgunners are awesome too!
-
The drunk dwarf reminds me of one of the animatronic dummies at the Glenrowan Ned Kelly museum
-
Is that a Dough boy?
Didn't the U.K troops have vertical pouches?
I have no idea! It was a freebie added to an order, so no idea of what it is meant to be
I painted up some legion imperialias guys for fun. A friend for scale
(https://i.imgur.com/lMIySCE.jpg)

I've noticed more people turning the Legion Imperialis kits into silly conversions
I'm not complaining

Am slowly coming back round to the Empire. Will be a big year for fantasy obvs, so I am sure they will be back on the table before long as am getting the whole Fantasy urge once more. Recent work are some not-lizardmen which were in the most recent TTCombat Kickstarter
(https://i.imgur.com/PzipS3g.jpg)

Last update of the year, and finally a return to the Empire. Kinda? They would work as proxy Greatswords anyway. From TTCombat

Inspired by Old World return I have tried to make some terrain for the first time since I was a teenager. Would be very happy for any feedback, as I am hoping to build a lot more terrain this year (particularly when the old terrain kits return.....)

Wargames Atlantic Ogres done. Lovely minis, great fun to paint
(https://i.imgur.com/0bKzRt5.jpg)

Very nice minis. Those units have personality. Well done!

Great paint job! :::cheers:::
-
Very cool - Going strong :-D
-
I ordered those orges too, I can't wait for them to arrive.
-
Those are some nice looking Ogres! :::cheers:::

Decided to give the Old World a try when my copy arrives, having never played Warhammer before. Putting together an Empire army is easy enough for an intro game
(https://i.imgur.com/4G2JGbN.png)
But they need opponents. And rather than play Empire vs. Empire, decided this is a good excuse to finish up the Beastmen I have sitting around
(https://i.imgur.com/Ol3VNto.png)
Still got a ways to go before it is ready (Old Wolrd doesn't release in Oz for a little while yet, so got time), but I finished this guy today, which represents a sizeable chunk of points

They look great! Where did you get the variety of fungal base enhancements?!?
-
Nice unit. Their faces might need more definition. That's what draws the human eye. Larger bases really lift the excellent basing to the fore.
-Z
-
They look great! Where did you get the variety of fungal base enhancements?!?
Spellcrow mostly, but there may be some Kromlech resin piece in there too. Could always make them with greenstuff I guess but that is beyond me.
Nice unit. Their faces might need more definition. That's what draws the human eye. Larger bases really lift the excellent basing to the fore.
-Z
The closed helms didn't really lend to painting up the faces, so I left them except for the unhelmed leader. I do like the bigger bases for minis like these. Otherwise your main issue is trying to come up with a configuration that allows them actually rank up. No issues at all here.
-
A general for the Beastmen. Will proxy as a Beastlord as I don't have a suitable mini for that yet

Starting to put a board together in readiness for Old World. Still not finished. Need to decide what I am going to do with the bare patches (probably flock them) and whether to add any more
(https://i.imgur.com/4DEQfUv.jpeg)
Also built a forest. Trees can be removed if needed
(https://i.imgur.com/7kY32Ip.jpeg)
An example of putting everything together thus far
(https://i.imgur.com/Q8UWBsK.jpeg)

Is that the old chaos chariot from the 90's?
I havnt seen that thing....in about 30 years
-
Yup. Its quite the chunk of metal :-P
Nearing completion of Wood Elf and Beastman 1000 point forces for Old World (my preorders should turn up this week ::heretic::) A few more Glade Guard, one more Dragon Ogre and a couple of Bestigors and they both done
(https://i.imgur.com/WIBP0ys.jpeg)
-
You know, on the subject of old, weighty pewter models. I had to move a steam tank from my Empire cabinet as it was causing a shelf to bow
-
Everything's looking really good here!
How did you make that board? I think the patches actually look good as is.
-Z
-
Board is just plywood (a poor choice in retrospect, as the warping is a real nuisance) and some model railway static grass mats glued over the top. A cheap and easy solution to get me up and running. I want to try my hand at making a fully modular setup this year so am treating this as a learning experience
I also bought some pre-made terrain from Gale Force 9. It is quite drab, and the skulls are very poor
(https://i.imgur.com/3cPICuF.jpeg)
So I have gone over them, replacing the skulls and throwing on some extra stuff
(https://i.imgur.com/P1rqcaY.jpeg)
-
Your scenery looks to be coming along nicely, congrats! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
You know, on the subject of old, weighty pewter models. I had to move a steam tank from my Empire cabinet as it was causing a shelf to bow
Sounds like you might have a damp problem. Was it an Ikea shelf of chipboard?
One steam tank isn't heavier than a thick old book....
-
The shelf had been previously used to house a hoarding friends Star Wars fleet before he sold it and gifted the shelf to me.
Hows this for a school maths puzzle
One Galactic Empire TIE fighter squad is equivalent to One Empire steam tank

First batch of starter box Tomb Kings done. I wanna get through these asap so am using the zenithal/contrast paint route that seems to be all the rage these days

Still adding to the tomb kings
(https://i.imgur.com/EXNskcM.jpeg)
And to break things up, some classic Minotaurs. Am hoping to play my first game of Old World tomorrow, and will likely include these
(https://i.imgur.com/CpVWgPM.jpeg)
-
Enjoying your color choices for the Tomb Kings.
It evben makes me want to paint some ... lol.
-
First ever game of Fantasy (or any tabletop game) today. 1,000 point armies with no magic to keep things simple. Still forgot some rules (Beastmen Primal Fury and Pistoliers Impetuous) but otherwise it went pretty well. Very narrow win for the Empire, when the spearmen rallied on the last turn and the two remaining knights passed a leadership test of 5 with a roll of 4.
Didn't have time during the game to take photos (will try to get that next time), but do have the setup at least

This was your first table top game ever ... congrats! :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
I like how the 1,000 point armies look on the table. Wondering what size was the playing area?
Its 2.4 metres by 1.2 metres. Very odd dimensions, but that fit two sets of this stuff https://www.hobbyco.com.au/products/grass-mat-flowering-meadow-120x60cm?currency=AUD&variant=41244515795100&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=0458384085fb&utm_source=GoogleAds&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaign_name}&network=x&device=c&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw17qvBhBrEiwA1rU9w8wDXr6_bsM4H07iQe92JwSeaCNJizTWVb6a6VgO1Bi8nM0yBBPTEBoCM3gQAvD_BwE
Next board I build will be different. Probably split into quarters, using a different material (not plywood) and the plan is to be fully modular.....

Looking good!
That hatch indeed is not original, but fits nicely. Where might it be from?

It could be a hatch from the plastic tank?
-
That is exactly what it is :smile2: I have never had the plastic tank, but the screens of the sprues on the website confirm it
Next up, I somehow came into possession of a pile of classic outriders many years ago through an ebay lot. Tried my best to make them all look different, including converting one with a blunderbuss. This evening I discovered I actually have an 8th of these guys no less so I need to think up how to add an appropriate champion and banner bearer methinks

Great job
I love the sculpt of the 'grenade launcher'. Very Loony Toons esque
Great job on the old hero too. I miss the old hero minis. You could paint them straight out of the blister and didn't need to worry about sub-assemblies and billowing capes
-
Karl is superbly sculpted, as you would expect, which makes painting him super easy. However the casting on these old metal minis is the only area which sometimes makes me prefer plastics; removing mould/slip lines on a metal mini is a bit of a pain. There is a line running straight through the face of the Ghal Mharaz which i did my best to remove, but its still there.....

Nicely done! The different components come together very well.
-
Great job on all these classics. particularly the banners/shields.
keep them coming. :eusa_clap:

Empire Duelist I have had sitting around. Will likely go into a unit of militia

I have always regretted not buying him, the fat merchant, scribe and bear handler when they were openly available
-
Great use of the old Karl Franz model:) Never was a fan of the duelist model, looks too "pulp" for my taste.

One of the kits I am hoping for a Made to Order run. Along with the War Wagon naturally....
A friend for the duellist
