Starting a Nuln expeditionary force, need painting advice
« on: May 07, 2014, 04:00:48 PM »
I've finally assembled the basics of my Nuln expeditionary force. I have 2 units of swordsmen, 2 units of handgunners and 3 blocks of knights as well as 2 cannons, a unit of archers and a small unit of pistoliers. My HQ consists of 2 priests, 3 wizards and a general on a horse, kitbashed from a couple different kits.
Now I had experience with painting IG and Space Marine armies, but this is something different. Empire is much more detailed and varied, almost every single soldier looks unique. I won't lie, I want to start playing asap and so would like to know the fastest, most economical way to painting empire units in Nuln colors (black and silver). Hovewer I'd also like to add a couple twists to my troops (expeditionary force and all that). Since you guys are much more experienced in this filed, I tought I'd post my question here. I'll still be using "Uniforms and heraldry of the Empire", but unoftunately it dosen't offer any tips on painting.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would recommend undercoating in black and then giving a heavy drybrush with a mid gray. If you want to, then give a light drybrush with a lighter gray. Get the whole model.

Then, take a mix of silver and a little bit of blue ink - paint that on all the metallic stuff.

Wash the whole model in black wash.

Paint the leather a dark brown, then highlight with a mid brown. Use the brown that used to be Bestial Brown - it is a little reddish - for the mid-brown. Also paint the flesh with this color.

Paint the flesh with a fleshtone over the brown.

That will give you very workmanlike figures VERY quickly - then, you can do details.

I would recommend using white for the main accent color - sashes etc. Use a deep blue gray as a base, then drybrush up to white (a 50/50 mix of the gray and white, and then white will work)

Then, use bright reds and greens and yellows for details; these will really make the figures pop.

This black and silver look is excellent - very easy to do, quick, and dramatic. You can go back and make the models exciting later on.

These are some handy advices, thanks! What about painting wood? Also, I know that it's preety generci question but what is some good technique of painting human eyes, so they don't come off as goofy/cross-eyed?
