Averland Starter Army - 6th ed.
« on: April 17, 2022, 11:57:31 AM »
Good day, my imperial brethren.

This is my first post so wanted to share my army so far. I'm also hoping for some advice on army-building. I'm yet to play my first game but have based my army on the idea of slowly building from 1,000pts to 2,000 points and using TVI's army as a template. Hoping to use this in 6th ed.

First up, here's the army and a few close-ups:

++ Standard  (Empire) [1,000pts] ++

+ Heroes +

Battle Wizard [120pts]: Empire Warhorse, Level 1
. Magic items: 2x Dispel Scroll

Captain [87pts]: Battle Standard Bearer, Full Plate Armour, Great Weapon

+ Core +

Knightly Orders [115pts]: 5x Knight (Wizard goes here)

Spearmen [358pts]: Musician, Sergeant, Shield, 29x Spearmen (Captain goes here)
. Archer Detachment: 10x Archer
. Halberdier Detachment: 10x Halberdiers

+ Special +

Great Cannon [100pts]

Pistoliers [95pts]: 5x Pistolier

+ Rare +

Hellblaster Volley Gun [125pts]

++ Total: [1,000pts] ++

The idea here is to have the core spearman unit front and centre and use detachments and cavalry to force a charge on them. The great cannon can be used for sniping and the helblaster to soften-up big targets.

One thing I'm not sure about is magic. I like the renaissance look of the Empire and, in particular, the extravagance and flamboyance of Averland. When it comes to wizards, I'm at a loss, but a nice, aggressive bright wizard with a pair of dispel scrolls seemed sensible.

I know TVI's army was based around three core units of swords but the points limit this in the smaller armies. And I like pikes (though they'll count as spears).

The 1,500 would look like this:

++ Standard  (Empire) [1,500pts] ++

+ Heroes +

Battle Wizard [120pts]: Empire Warhorse, Level 1
. Magic items: 2x Dispel Scroll

Captain [87pts]: Battle Standard Bearer, Full Plate Armour, Great Weapon

Warrior Priest [124pts]: Display Prayers, Heavy Armour
. Magic Items: Doomfire Ring

+ Core +

Knightly Orders [123pts]: 5x Knight, Musician (Wizard here)

Spearmen [358pts]: Musician, Sergeant, Shield, 29x Spearmen (Captain here)
. Archer Detachment: 10x Archer
. Halberdier Detachment: 10x Halberdiers

Swordsmen [368pts]: Musician, 29x Swordsmen (Priest here)
. Free Company: 10x Fighter
. Handgunner Detachment: 10x Handgunner
. Standard Bearer
. . State Magic Banner: Banner  Of Duty

+ Special +

Great Cannon [100pts]

Pistoliers [95pts]: 5x Pistolier

+ Rare +

Hellblaster Volley Gun [125pts]

++ Total: [1,500pts] ++

I'm getting closer to TVI's initial intent with this. I don't know whether it's detachment-heavy, though.

And, finally, the 2,000 target army:

++ Standard  (Empire) [1,993pts] ++

+ Heroes +

Battle Wizard [120pts]: Empire Warhorse, Level 1
. Magic items: 2x Dispel Scroll

Captain [87pts]: Battle Standard Bearer, Full Plate Armour, Great Weapon

Warrior Priest [124pts]: Display Prayers, Heavy Armour
. Magic Items: Doomfire Ring

+ Core +

Knightly Orders [123pts]: 5x Knight, Musician (Wizard here)

Knightly Orders [123pts]: 5x Knight, Musician

Spearmen [358pts]: Musician, Sergeant, Shield, 29x Spearmen (Captain here)
. Archer Detachment: 10x Archer
. Halberdier Detachment: 10x Halberdiers

Swordsmen [368pts]: Musician, 29x Swordsmen (Priest here)
. Free Company: 10x Fighter
. Handgunner Detachment: 10x Handgunner
. Standard Bearer
. . State Magic Banner: Banner  Of Duty

+ Special +

Great Cannon [100pts]

Great Cannon [100pts]

Greatswords [270pts]: Counts Champion, 20x Greatsword, Musician, Standard Bearer

Pistoliers [95pts]: 5x Pistolier

+ Rare +

Hellblaster Volley Gun [125pts]

++ Total: [1,993pts] ++

Created with BattleScribe

So here we have the three core units with a gun and cavalry unit for each. I've bought all the parts but they've not arrived, yet.

Rule of cool reigns supreme in my eyes and I don't mind losing if it means taking my war elephant out for a walk. I'd like to win sometimes, though, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, all.

Migale

Wow, fabulous figures, and your take on Averland looks supercalifragilistic!

Curious as to where'd the giant come from from?  Like seeing the mix in of hobbits.  And an elephant!

Thanks, mate.

The giant is a print - I mashed a few different STLs together to make him (mrorangejumper on cgtrader, Reptilian Overlords and Peculiar Companions). I like how they break-up the regimented look. Similar to the halflings - the Moot is part of Averland, afterall.

Great looking army. I particularly like the pikemen - I do not fancy the 7th edition spearmen models, but they look much better with pikes than with spears.

The original TVI tactica seems to have been lost, but you can find an adapted version here . Presumably, the text in Italics is the original by TVI; the main text by Atchman is for the 7th edition, but that was basically 6.2.

Some incoherent renarks:

- The TVI magic phase will be mainly defensive. If you prefer  (as I do) a stronger offensive and defensive magic phase, you should make the Wizard a lvl 2, and give him the Rod of Power (one of our best items), instead of Dispel Scrolls. That will give you 4 PD and 4 DD + any stored PD/DD. You can then use the sequence of spells,  prayers & Doomfire Ring to draw out DD and get the things through you want. Also, remember that the Hammer of Sigmar, if cast on the Wizard, will affect his spells too. The Lore of Fire is a good all-round lore, especially in smaller games. A good alternative (and better in larger games) would be the Lore of Heavens.

- In a 1000/1500 points game, you can do without the BSB, but I would add standard bearers to the main infantry unit(s).

- Your WP needs more protection.

- In the TVI tactica, archers are intended as screens. So, you need to place them in a single rank to cover as much space as possible.

It is not enough to have no ideas of your own; you must also be incapable of expressing them.

That is a great looking army. The elephant base size is probably too small, however would be a suitable model for a steam tank if you so wished to try.

Somehow didn't see this thread until now. Deliciously lovely army! Most excellent work!
