1500 points photo battle report at warhamster world
« on: October 20, 2010, 12:38:30 AM »
Once again I traveled to Warhamster World, where I did battle with my old nemesis Finlay. Since he didn't have his own miniatures with him I provided both armies. As usual, we used the campaign army list, though I took a few liberties and both lists may technically be illegal. Still, who cares?

My list:

captain   squid tattoos, sword of might, pistol, shield
captain   bsb   cuirass of safety, great weapon
wizard   L2
25   Men-at-arms      command, full plate, great weapons, S4
10   handgunners
21   black orcs   command   blood banner (frenzy)
10   Halfling Rangers      slings
5   pistoliers
   cannon
   horse artillery
   war wagon

Finlay's list:

captain   full plate, pistol, lucky coin, sword of might
captain   bsb   cuirass of safety, great weapon
wizard   L2
25   Men-at-arms      command, full plate, halberds, S4
12   xbows      pavaise
25   Dwarf Mercenaries      command, heavy armor, great weapons, banner of Ranald
6   Ogre Mercenaries      command, heavy armor, great weapons
5   pistoliers
   cannon
   ribaudequin

There are no mortars, because it has been established that mortars just ruin things for all concerned. Besides, I'm trying to cut down.

Finlay chose a theurgist, and rolled wind blast and timewarp. He wasn't too happy about windblast, because it's rubbish. Well, presumably it's rubbish. He never cast it. I went for an alchemist, and got plague of rust and golden robe.

Before we start, this is a lord of the rings wall:

And this is a tomb kings table:

But we didn't play on either of those. We went for this one:

That's Finlay over there. It was still technically too early to have a drink.

So, Finlay's deployment: awesome ogres, including out-of-place Mordheim ogre (I need one more Empire ogre); men-at-arms and captain; awesome dwarfs (that Finlay mocked) and Marienburg BSB. Two spell cards, one good, one bad.

Pavaise crossbowmen;cannon; ribaudequin; tiny rubbish dice.

Pistoliers.

Me now.

Horse artillery (it's rubbish, but I am determined to use it anyway).

Black Orcs (!) led by under-dressed squid cult captain (different base size apparently means he has to sit on the edge of the unit); men-at-arms plus squid cult battle standard.

Handgunners; war wagon.

Pistoliers; cannon.

Attempt at an arty shot of black orcs through trees.

Halfling scouts!

A similar picture to an earlier one.

The same picture, but after the pistoliers have danced/vanguarded into view. Oh, and also the stuff moved forward

My turn. Things move forward. Beer arrives! It's called Troll Brew, but is nice despite that. Lost Mordheim ogre is shot and killed. Horse artillery misfires and explodes.

Two handgunners are shot.

Finlay's pistoliers move to screen the ogres...

...but are slinged/slung to death.

Everyone does the timewarp.

I try to charge. The men-at-arms fancy it, but the orcs drag their feet. I have a glittering robe spell active.

The combat doesn't go all that well. We draw. I shoot some dwarfs in the face.

The ogres charge the men-at-arms. The dwarfs charge the orcs.

Finlay's men-at-arms and ogres fail to kill anything much. In fact, they kill one man. I kill an ogre and five or six men-at-arms. The ogres flee, but the men-at-arms are steadfast and don't [mistake! They weren't stubborn, since they didn't have more ranks than my unit. They had the same number.]

The dwarf-orc fight goes nowhere.

My halflings charge the fleeing ogres to make them run some more. I also shoot at them, to little effect.

I irresistably cast shiney robe, but take a wound from the explosion.

Dwarfs don't like orcs, I'm told.

The same thing, but from the other side of the table. This looks to be after my battle standard bearer kills Finlay's general in a challenge.

My general almost dies, but is saved thanks to the extra armour save from the sparkly cloak spell.

My wizard recasts glittery robes irresistably, but dies. Then the war wagon does a drive-by on Finlay's wizard, disposing of him as well. That's it for magic.

My battle standard bearer dies, and my orc unit breaks and flees. Finlay reacts with quiet dignity.

The dwarfs don't catch the orcs, of course. My general has dropped his shield.

So, the dwarfs charge them again. They still don't catch them.

Remember the artillery? No, neither do I. They aren't doing anything, that's why!

The ogres have charged in a funny way, but find themselves out of base contact when it's their time to fight.

We don't really know what to do, but eventually shuffle a man-at-arms over so the ogres are still in the fight. What's the proper thing to do? Please tell us if you know.

My men-at-arms are wiped out, but I shoot lots of dwarfs to make up for it. That last one is worth nearly three hundred victory points now.

The halflings are eaten by ogres. But the pistoliers run away.

My orcs and general charge the enemy battle standard and his one dwarf pal. The dwarf dies, and then the BSB breaks and auto-dies.

I panic Finlay's remaining men-at-arms, but it makes no difference even though it's the last turn. Thanks, new rules.

But my cannon finally kills his.

Well done, cannon! It's about time.

Game over. This is me. I look like my eyes are almost closed, as always.

So it turned out the game was a draw. Almost everything was dead. Two eighty-point wizards had a drastic effect on the game.

So, that was that. Thanks for reading!

Nice game and nice report! (shouldn't this be in the new battlereports section?)

I thought you were done for when those Ogres crashed into the side of your unit, but they fluffed their attacks big time!

Not having played a single game of 8th yet I must say I'm amazed about not gaining vp for a fleeing unit, would it have been different if they were not allowed to rally any more due to being under 25%?

Oh, and that beard suits you, keep it.

Nice report, rufus. I see you got a haircut from the last picture posted of you several years ago. You also have more clothes on now, which is a definite improvement.  :closed-eyes:

Doesn´t this belong in the battlegrounds?

Also I like how you epically dropped your shield, like a true Hoplite!

Rufus come back with your shield or on top of it.

Nice Bat Rep I enjoyed reading that, its nice to see non standard lists being used every now and then.  As for the "Ogre" situation you mnetioned I had the same problem the other day with some Flesh Hounds being out of base contact in pretty much the same way, although I could not find any clarification we did as you did and shuffled the ranks along to bring all the combats in to base to base contact.

I think this is the correct way to play it, or the Ogres would move up to stay in contact. I *think* the charges from the rear section has a set of rules that would apply. In that case, if the rear rank is killed, the attacker moves forward to stay in contact.

yes, but this was not a rear charge... we did think of the rear charge rules, but couldnt find anything for the dual front charge.

It turned out being quite important, if they werent in combat, they would have been killed by the pistoliers/hallflings, but as it was, a couple of turns later they had a tasty hobbit snack.
something like a 350 pt swing.

But doesnt really matter, because I had a good time.
I don't care about the rules.

The Ogres should have been left out of combat.  When there is only rank left, casualties are removed evenly from the sides of the first rank(owning players choice as to which side is removed first).   The rules governing rear or flank charges and incomplete ranks do not apply here as we aren't talking about incomplete rear ranks.

Well as neither having a big nose nor having poor eyesight are damaging of the character of either of you, then no, there is no slander case. :engel:

I definitely think the ogres should have been out of the combat. The rulebook even covers it - we should have looked it up after all.

Anyway, I should be returning to warhamster world soon with the same armies. This time though, my opponent will be FR1DAY.
