I've just tried on my wet palette to get the right tones. I suppose you use GW colours?

The base colours are easy: The darkest parts are painted with Mephiston Red desaturated for the dark tones with a bit of Caliban Green. The middle tone is Evil Sunz Scarlet.

The trickiest part are the highlights. I don't think the painter used red and white to achieve the brightest colours. You'd only get pink. The basis for the brighter tone is some kind of orange, I think. I used Troll Slayer Orange mixed with Evil Sunz Scarlet at first. I don't think you will achieve the brightest colour with that though. I'd try Orange Fluorescent (Vallejo Model Color, not Games Workshop) to achieve the desired result. Not sure whether Games Workshop offers colours like these.

Interesting approach.  Thank you for the feedback and the pictures! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

Looking at that image, the highlights do look pink to me. But the progression of the gradient is pretty quick from red to pink. Same with the shadows. The middle and mid-light red dominates most of what's there.

In a weird mood I think. But I have to say I can’t stop laughing about this line. The other day a customer wanted a red wall painted over and I had to stifle a laugh as this came to mind.

Red mixed with orange highlights looks bad, and red with pink highlights also look bad.

Start with red like normal, then mix red with skin colour and highlight with that. Don't use yellow looking skin paint like the old Bronzed Flesh, use Dwarf Flesh instead.

You could do it manually by mixing red and yellow+white+black+a bit of blue, but getting the latter right and consistent is a paint in the ass.
I agree with the inhumane treatment of animals.

The magic of Phnotoshop....

I copied, pasted, and enlarged three sample spots from the image -- dark, medium, and light. Maybe this will help?

Also, the red in the painting is very striking in large part due to context. There's a lot of dull green in the background.

Going to check the paints I have and see what might fit those three colors, thanks!

So I have Khorne Red, Mephiston Red, and Trollslayer Orange, but the latter is too orange.

I purchased Wild Rider Red which is more of a pink color, and Astorath Red which is a "dry" paint although more of a fuscia pink.

Also, thinking if I had Evil Suns Scarlet that might help, but will play with these colors on a sprue and see what I can learn.
