Project W - Time
« on: May 07, 2018, 04:01:07 PM »
This project does two things

1) It was given to me during my recuperation last month – as if I don’t have enough unfinished projects of my own – to encourage me back to modelling.

And

2) Is a test of my newfound Flickr account – the sale goes through by the end of the month so we’ll see if keeps working afterwards.
As you can see it is a collection of Doctor Who’s/Whos/Whos’/Whose (English is my first and only language so how am I supposed to know which is grammatically correct).

Most of them are from Black Tree and are old (1980’s?) so the sculpt are not great. There are two duplicates/alternative figures for 3 & 5 which being later sculpts are much better, but not up to the work of Heresy who made the more recent Doctors.

I have free rein to do as I like so now I’m back with my own PC it’s time to do a little research before I get started.

Looks like a fun pastime for any whovian.
I cant remember who I was talking to the other day at work about Dr Who and I mentioned how funny it is about how the show started out with next to no budget [often looking like Plan 9] and look at it now.

I think the plural may be Doctors Who ?  :?

Nice little project. Lots of potential to find other models to fill in as the many companions, if you want to expand on it.

The first Dr Who as played by William Hartnell 1963-1966 and later by David Bradley 2013-2017.

The figure is by Black Tree Design. I know this range is old (20/30 years or more) so the sculpt of this figure, and many of the Drs to follow, are not up to today’s standard, particularly with faces; but my talents are not good enough to make them look more like the actors.

The figure is as it came although I have added the monocle and the blue ring before repainting.

That dr who  was before my home but he looks great and fitting the character nicely. I watched Tom Baker and his apprentice Elizabeth Sladen for their time and I loved it. Davros and the  daleks etc. Is there models for baker and Sladen?

The group shot above is the complete collection – there won’t be any added, but  I think Baker is in there -  and Sladen's mutt.

I think there's another version of Hartnell's Dr in the shot [sans arms] and a Davros

Holy crap!!!!
Good eye rowsdower.
JAK - what a collection. Not sure why I didn’t look closer. I had completely forgot about that mutt btw and baker is there for sure. Now I can’t wait for Davros. Exterminate! Exterminate! He didn’t have to worry about lines too much. It’s all coloured in nostalgia now cause I havnt seen that show since then but I loved that bad guy.

The film Dr Who as played by Peter Cushing 1965-1966

Black Tree Design figure with a slightly unusual pose. I lowered his left arm a little and as his right hand looked as if he should be holding something made a pair of glasses out of wire. These glasses don’t have arms/ear grips so are like a double monocle – I suppose to keep some sort of a link with the then TV Dr. I also added the scarf.

I think there's another version of Hartnell's Dr in the shot [sans arms] and a Davros

Sorry no second Hartnell but there is a Dalek creator – and I’ve just started researching Baker so he’ll be along soon.

Here's trivia
The cast of the Dalek films were awed when they first met Cushing and noticed how down to earth and pleasant he was [this is a contrast to William Hartnel who would drink, loose his temper and nurse old prejudices] . Cushing behaved the same way on set of the original Star wars film; he was also suffering from some sort of foot ailment and in many scenes, was wearing sandals with his pants rolled up above his knees during most of the scenes he was in.

The second Dr Who as played by Patrick Troughton1966-1969

Black Tree Design figure as it came; my only addition, besides the repaint, is the green tassel on the end of his recorder.

The third Dr Who as played by John Pertwee 1970-1974

Black Tree Design figure as it came. This second version of the 3rd Dr is a later sculpt to most of the other figures in this series, and is a much improved figure. This is why I chose to paint this model rather than redo the painted version in the group photo above.

The forth Dr Who as played by Tom Baker 1974-1981

Black Tree Design figure as it came – the face is a terrible sculpt and I painted as best I can.

K9 as played by himself 1977-2011

Black Tree Design figure with new tail. He already had a replacement tail in the group picture but when I came to paint him it was missing. I made a new tail out of thin wire twisted round a pin to give the circle on the end. There have been four different models of K9 and if the photos are to be trusted each had slight variations to the others. Photos of ‘official’ props have differences to his body colours,   the tartan patterns on his collar and the buttons on his back.  I’ve gone for a generic look in metallic blue and a green wash – the end result can’t be identified as a specific K9 but hopefully will be accepted as a K9.

The figure may be modelled on the original K9 - if I understand his history correctly the original K9 didn’t have the carrying handles that were added to the later versions due to their unreliability during filming.

The fifth Dr Who as played by Peter Davidson 1982-1984

There were two figures of this Dr by Black Tree Design in the collection. The second one, like Pertwee above, was done later and has a better face, but the stance looked awkward, so I did a head swap. I now had a headless body with a cricket bat so decided to make use of the bat. Peter did three series as Dr Who and must have had a different variation of this outfit in each one judging by the publicity stills, plus another variation shown at an official exhibition.

I guess by default Tegan Jovanka is my favourite sidekick. Even though I don't know how she learned to speak an ancient Aboriginal dialect.

Nice work JAK! As I’m partial to the baker era, I find that one really special. Love the mutt too although I wasnt a big fan of him. Brings back memeries.😺

Sorry wrong TV show - this is No. 6

The sixth Dr Who as played by Colin Baker 1984-1986

Black Tree Design figure as it came.  The original paint job on the coat is very close to the actual costume designs so I’ve touched it up as little as possible.
