Just tried the new GW washes and foundation paints
« on: November 20, 2009, 06:09:55 PM »
and I was very pleasantly surprised!

I had tried the GW inks before, which needed a lot of watering down before they could be used. The new washes, it seems to me, don't need any kind of watering down at all (although this might mean they run out quicker). They also seem to flow into recesses/cracks better, and don't dry as 'shiny' as the GW inks did.

I also really liked the red foundation paint. It does in fact do a really good job of putting a solid layer of red over a dark basecoat (like black) in one coating. Before I'd really struggled to build up to a nice red from black basecoat. May get a yellow version of this as well if they have it.

Anyone else tried these and liked them?

You for real?

Of course, I use them exclusively because I love them and because I am more hated for it.

The foundation paints and washes are bloody brilliant.

I spent a long time not buying the foundation paints because our old LGS owner said they were awful. Fortunately I ended up disbelieving his tripe, saw the light and purchased them, and regretted the time I spent without them.

Excellent products.

I agree.   I only recently discovered the foundation paints and initially bought them for a house I was constructing.  I was so pleased with the grey and brown color that I went out and bought a few more.  I love the washes as well.

I enjoy them as well - although many of the foundation paints smell and taste pretty bad - the red especially.

yeah, you'll need a hell of a lot of those small pots for a house!

I like the washes, hate the foundations. They still don't cover. Admittedly, my anger is mostly with mechrite red, I'm gonna try iyaden darksun out soon.

Foundation paints smell like hazelnut to me... :icon_razz:
I find them quite efficient, not perfect but better than the standard GW paints. Though I find the red and yellow really ugly. I use them but just as they are, a foundation to paint on.
I haven't tried the washes. I prepare my washes with... paint and... water :icon_surprised: (and Liquitex additives soon).

You're referring specifically to the red then ?

But seriously, hands down the best things since running hot water...

I normally end up mixing part foundation to blood red and sunburst yellow to get the colours I want.

Both the yellow and red are not as bright as I would like, so I often mix about 25% foundation into a normal GW red or yellow to keep some of the coverage but add brightness.

Alternatively, and better I guess, is to paint the first layer in the dull foundation and then highlight in the brighter normal colour, but I can be lazy  :-)

How did you live without them for so long?! The washes are awesome, much cleaner, easier to control and no horrible gloss finish. Im a big fan of the foundation paints too. If they are used as intended, ie as a bass coat to build layers of citadel colour on, they provide a great solid bass.

I'm making a mistake even trying to respond to this, but you can't help yourself can you?  :-D

The red is probably the weakest of the paints, but I've found two layers to sufficient for a nice even red. Which is wonderful after trying it with other reds. Seriously happy with the foundations.

"you'll need a hell of a lot of those small pots for a house"

I'm sure you knew I meant a Warhammer house and not my home.  I set the building aside to work on the wiring and haven't gotten around to finishing it.  I just need one more part for the wiring and then will finish a base for the house and it will be done.

I love them!

My only issue is that paint drips out the back, wasting it and getting paint on my fingers whenever I try to pick the pot up.

The washes are nice, but I prefer layering over washing, so I don't use them much.

Foundation paints are very nice. In addition to their obvious use, they add more variety to the GW colour range.

Me too, but because of the really nice quality of the washes, I find myself using them more and more.

I haven't tried the foundation paints. I haven't really had a problem with other paints I already use that I feel I need some sort of special paints.

I wouldn't even bother with them for a big terrain project. For something like that, I'd consider trying just a diluted paint wash, maybe with a bit of additive (like Future floor wax or some of that flow enhancer stuff from one of the other paint companies...)

Hm, it's definitely an argument if guys like you or Shads are using them.

Guess I'm just a stick-in-the-mud when it comes to painting.

I'm trying to think whether I've ever seen any of your stuff in the B&P but I can't think of any... you ever posted any of it? All this talk of layering makes me curious...

Never, because my photographing skills are... not so good.

But your curiosity is misplaced, I'm just talking about putting one layer of colour over the other to get a highlight. Nothing fancy :-)
