Title: Orcyboy's hobby blog
Post by: orcyboy on January 12, 2018, 10:07:46 PM
Well seeing as photobucket zapped everything a while back I guess this is a good point to start a new.

I haven't been doing Empire in a while, its been all things goblinoid for the past few years but no doubt I'll swing back around to the Empire.

Mainly this will be a duplication of what I'm posting on my blog http://oldorcsneverdie.blogspot.com/ but there are some things that just don't fit there that might end up here.

Since October (Orctober) Ive been inspired by an ongoing challenge to paint 1000pts of Oldhammer miniatures in 6 months. In keeping with the initiative I've been aiming to paint 200pts of miniatures (3rd edition) a month. So far so good with the exception of December.

But lets step back and let me re-post my October painting:

http://oldorcsneverdie.blogspot.com/2017/10/my-orctober-showcase.html (http://oldorcsneverdie.blogspot.com/2017/10/my-orctober-showcase.html)

My Orctober showcase!
So it looks like this Orctober has been a banner month for me. I think I've painted more this one month then I have in that past two years.

So here's a quick review of what Ive finished this month.

First up an Orc hero. One of my favorite Orc heroes I might add. He's got everything you'd want from an 80's Orc- leering grin, gangly limbs and an awesome helmet.

Next up is an Orc champion. Originally intended to be the leader of my Orc crossbow unit but  usurped by another.

A mighty unit of 28 Orc Crossbows.  Hopefully I'll have more pictures and an actual story to go with them coming up next month or so.

I ended up using Mr. pointy finger as their leader. I figured crossbows are a bit complicated for Orcs and they'd need a disciplinarian with a whip to keep them on task. But honestly this is one of my least favorite Orc models, he's a bit static and the modern looking books and big shoulder pads look a bit too 40k, he may end up being replaced at some point.

One of the odd ball models in the unit. I believe he's from Citadel Ad&D line.

A quick pre-slotta Orc. Didn't turn out too great, the skin tone makes him look frog-ish. One of the crossbow orcs was pulled from the pre-slotta The Ol' Rusty Axe Gang so I need to paint up a replacement.

 Trolls!

The plan was to get three Trolls painted up before the end of November in an effort to keep up with painting 200 points of Oldhammer a month.

Well I buckled down and painted eleven Trolls! Plus tidied up another five or so. That makes for a nifty unit of 16 Trolls plus a hanger on.

So lets take a look.

The big bad Troll gang... ere we go ere we gooo...

First are the three oldest fellas. 1984 models I believe and quite nice. The Squidward looking guy in the middle came out the best. I was surprised by the little details on these guys from mushrooms growing on the ones head to all the little skulls and charms.

A C20 marsh troll, marauder troll, C20 Hill troll and another Marauder troll. I painted the one purple on a whim and he came out surprisingly well.

Another C20 marsh troll and a C20 cave troll. These guys I painted in the mid-2000's

Four more marauder trolls. I believe that makes for a complete collection of marauder trolls.  These are old paint jobs. Originally painted by my brother in the early 90's.  I acquired them and dry-brushed them in the early 2000's and just updated their bases. A bit rough looking but serviceable.

The same marsh troll as seen above plus another hill troll. I actually have four more hills trolls on the back burner for now, two of the same models in the unit is enough.

A couple of D&D style trolls.  The one on the left is Ral Partha AD&D 1988 line and the other is a TSR Troll from 1984.  I'm not sure what the deal is with D&D trolls, they have kind of a swamp thing/vegetable vibe. I guess they're just your garden variety trolls...  Although the Ral Partha one is a beautifully crafted sculpt I don't care for him much. I do however like the TSR troll (kind of an Andre the Giant look) and he fits it fine for now with the rest of my trolls.

And last we have their leader. I nice battle troll from Knightmare games. I picked him up through the Greenskin Wars kickstarter.  He's a good blend of Oldhammer and Middlehammer and fits in perfectly imo.
So that's it for November.  I managed to paint up 11 new trolls at 65pts each totaling out to 715 pts. 500+ points over my goal.  Plus I fixed up half a dozen old paint jobs putting together a unit of 16 trolls at 1040 points.  I doubt I'll ever field that many trolls at once but who knows.

Since I was all about trolls this month I also re-uploaded my troll tapes to youtube. (I lost the creds to my old youtube account and had to create a new one). I also added another one I forgot last time. Its even got a nice holiday jingle just in time for the season:

Since October (Orctober) Ive been inspired by an ongoing challenge to paint 1000pts of Oldhammer miniatures in 6 months. In keeping with the initiative I've been aiming to paint 200pts of miniatures (3rd edition) a month. So far so good with the exception of December.

That challenge looked like a lot of fun, and I would have joined in except all of my projects are WIP and they wanted un-started armies, and I've got an amplified version of Gamer Attention Deficit Disorder, and figured I probably would have gotten distracted into a different project after just a few months.  :icon_lol:

First up an Orc hero. One of my favorite Orc heroes I might add. He's got everything you'd want from an 80's Orc- leering grin, gangly limbs and an awesome helmet.

Those old gangly orcs are awesome. I wish they were easier to come by, or there were some alternatives in that style available now. I'd like to put together a small warband/mercenaries. But everything seems to be in the more muscular, blocky style.

That is a pile of old trolls! Very cool.  :eusa_clap:

Trolls are awesome creatures. Always had my unit of stone trolls in every army and rendition. It makes me think, I have 3 from some other supplier and a regular troll from a starter army I think. I’m a bit like 023 ( GADD not skill 😸) in catching a whim and following it rather than sticking to my guns.

so old...so hammerish. Nice thread! Gangliness really was the style of the day on orcs and trolls. The other thing I noticed is that the weird ape-style 'arms that reach to the knees' that I don't like about modern GW orcs have been around forever.

Yep, would be nice if somebody still made something similar. About the closest I can find are the Orcs from Old Glory's Ghost line and even those are fairly dated.

Some artillery finished.

So I didn't quite finish these next guys in December I was only about 80% done until last weekend when I finally finished them.

I have two old Notlob's bolt throwers and two of the newer style (relatively speaking) Orc "Spear Chukkas".
http://www.solegends.com/citrr/1rr14notlobs/index.htm (http://www.solegends.com/citrr/1rr14notlobs/index.htm)

The two older style bolt throwers. One I had painted a little while back but I updated it with bow string.

The newer style bolt throwers (Spear Chukkas).

The Orc in the middle is the acting engineer/boss. As far as I can tell Citadel made at least two variations of this Notlob model, one with an all chain mail coat and this one with a scale mail vest.

So that's about 186 point and if we call the Boss a 5th level hero that should put me over the 200pt mark.

Not sure what I'll be doing for January. We're already a couple weeks into it and things are busy, might need to call this month a wash.

But I'm looking at either finishing my Orc villagers or working on another proper unit of Orc boyz.  I'm leaning towards the villagers as they're unique and fun but I don't think they'll total out to 200 pts.

Bye  for now-

Finished my villagers a couple weeks ago and finally took some pics.

If ever I get around to using them in a battle I'd probably draw on the old levies rules from 3rd edition or maybe subject to stupidity (drunk and disorderly).

That's it for now.  Working on some more boyz and a couple more trolls now.

10 Orcs boyz and couple more trolls completed.

I think I finally got my Orc painting mojo back. The crossbow Orcs I over blended their greens, the villagers I got bored and relied too much on dry brushing but these guys came out just right sticking with bolder contrasts.

I also feel the need to re-iterate my love for these old models.  A mix of Kevin Adams and the Perry twins with one White Hand LOTR Orc that I'm not sure of the designer probably one of the Perry's or Morrison's.

and last a couple more Trolls. Both are from Heartbreaker. The one on the right is from their Magic the Gathering line, the other is from their later Tim Prow line I think but mine I picked up with the recent Kev Adams/Tim Prow kickstarter run by Impact! Miniatures and is cast in a plastic/resin similar to fine cast.

More Orcs in the pipeline.

Weird, they're missing for me now too. I'll try and figure out whats going in this afternoon, maybe google doesn't like how I'm linking them.

Not sure what happened to the pics, they are working for me now again at least for the moment. The first villagers pic I found the image tags had inserted width and height metrics which I had not applied. I removed those and replaced the pic link which may also have changed by google and with that all the other pics started magically working including the March post, so I dont know whats up.

Does anybody have any recommendations on hosting and posting pics these days now that photobucket is dead? I really don't trust google photos and I'm not really sharing the photos the way they recommend (I pull the image url out of the "View image info" rightclick option).

for photohosting, imgur has worked well for me for a few years now. of course like with any 'free' service on the internet, you never know, they may change their policy tomorrow.

p.s. I can only see the first Jan pic and none of the Feb ones. ...and I think I am missing out on some orcy goodness

So ten more Orc boyz are done as I crawl towards what I hope to be a large unit of 30 Orcs. 20 down 10 to go.

Some more examples of Kev Adams excellent 80's work.
Though I'm not sure about the one second from the right as a Kevin design. I was a little unimpressed with him at first, he's smallish and sort of man-ish but he painted up well and I kind of like him now. The guy on the far right is one of my favorite designs. Some of you might recognize Bruglodd in there, he wont be part of the greater unit but he was in reaching distance when I was painting so he got the treatment.  I'm thinking the banner depicts "Mork da' Kunnin" or maybe its Gork I don't know.

And the next five. Nice models in general although the one on the far right has a face that is a bit miscast with what might be his left eye resting on his cheek.

The completionist in me made me pick up these two spear chukkas. They are similar to the Notlob bolt throwers I previously shared except they are festooned with all sorts of furniture. I believe these were the Dwarf bolt throwers from the same period. Unfortunately I could only dig up enough crew for one of them at least for now.

 Last 10 Orcs finished.

Ten new recruits have wondered down the valley to join the infamous Mork's Mutilatorz gang.

Finished these guys last week and finally got them photo'd up. A little rushed but they still came out pretty good. The fella with the mohawk helmet is one of my favorites.

So that makes for a nice fat unit of thirty Orcs and no duplicates! Looks like the Mutilatorz gang is all set for a season of raiding a pillaging the local farmsteads.

OK, on to the next project. I think my goblins need some attention now.

Bye for now-

 Goblin slingers
Well things got a bit bust around here and these guys took a bit longer to get finished then I had expected, but better late then never.

While rummaging through my considerable number of un-painted gobbos a few months ago I found I had 8 slingers in the mix and that got me thinking. Add a command and we're at 11 and I just need 9 more to make a proper unit. After a few conversions and a couple oddballs tossed in I've got myself a proper unit of 20 Gobbo slingers.

As far as I can tell there were only three slingers released in the main Goblin line or at least thats all I can find in the 1988 catalog. The one in the middle and the right must be fairly common as I have multiples of them. I also have to admit I've always had a soft spot for the one in the middle ever since I spotted him in the Heroes for Wargames book years ago.

A few of the oddballs. The fella on the left is a 40k grot I'll probably replace if I come across something more suitable. The gob in the middle is a pre-slotta goblin with sling and fits in fine.  The grinning fella on the right, well I suspect he has a sling he just got a little confused when the boss told him to put his rocks in it (or maybe he knows exactly what he's doing idk).

A few minor conversions. I must have a dozen of the Marauder MM30 goblin with club (middle) and converted a handful for this project.

The boss is one of my favorites from the Kevin Adams line of gobbos. A simple sculpt but the mutton chops and mustache lends him a natural air of authority (the spiked club helps too).

I also managed to paint up a Goblin shaman from the old Heartbreaker line I believe.

That's it for now.

Hello again,

Finished up this here regiment of Heartbreaker goblins and despite the numbers and lack of diversity I quite enjoyed them.  I believe these are all Kevin Adams sculpts and for the most part quite nice if a bit heavily armored for goblins.

Normally when painting large units containing mostly the same miniatures I try and vary the color of skin tones, armor and clothes etc but for these guys I just painted them pretty much all in uniform and glad I did.  I actually found it relaxing plugging away at these guys without having to put much forethought into each of them. The bases were a slog to paint though.

42 nasty well armed and armored goblins.

The bulk of the regiment is made up these two fellas. Very difficult to rank up, unfortunately I had to split the unit pretty much down the middle to get them to rank up.

All of these guys are of course metal, with the exception of the one below on the left. I got him with Impact Miniatures recent kickstarter re-producing most of the old Heartbreaker models in resin or rather some kind of plastic/resin.  He's not actually an exact copy of the original as he has armored boots and a flame etched onto his blade.

I do have about a dozen gobbos made up of these guys to help break up some of that tedious uniformity.

The command. A little bit of a skull fetish..

So onto the next project.
I think I'll be working on sorting out my wolf riders. I believe I now have enough metal wolves to get things moving along. The only thing I hate more than the old plastic wolves is the old plastic boars. But anyhow I should now have enough metal wolves to swap out my 90's wolf riders with proper mounts.

Yeah, they're still around. Impact Miniatures sells them in sets caste in resin and Ral Partha Europe still has them available in metal.  They fit in fine with the Harliquin/Black Tree Design Goblins. Though I swear Black Tree Design had a much larger selection of Goblins 8-10 years ago but their catalog has shrunk over the years.

I finished up my Goblin rocket team or rather "skyrocket" as its refereed to in 3rd edition. Nice little model, easy to paint up which provided a quick little interlude while I sort out and clean up all my wolf riders.

I'm a little at odds with a couple of the goblins, while I like the miniatures in general Im not too keen on the binoculars and goggles a little too WoW for me.

Finally got these guys done. 18 Goblin wolf riders.

These guys for now will be the core of my Goblin cavalry. Kitted out with light armor, spears and shields they are the closest thing my Goblins have to heavy cavalry.

I still have a couple more units of wolf riders to complete but for now they'll have to wait until after Orctober.

I got a few Lancer Miniature Orcs finished before the end of Orctober. I'll get the rest finished next month hopefully... and with better pictures.

I quite like these guys. They are big beefy Orcs probably closer in style to what GW was putting out with their plastic kits in the late 90's and aughts but with a little less exaggeration. The sculpting is good, not knock your socks off good but detailed and interesting enough to give them a lot of charm. Not to mention they are affordable imo and they are in proper METAL!

I don't really have a recipe.  I use mostly craft store paints and if I leave my painting desk for more then a day or two I can never remember what paints I used last so my " recipe" changes with each sitting. But here's a pic of the paints of the greens I used off on for these last orcs:

Lancer Miniatures Orcs unit completed
I finished up these guys a few weeks ago and finally got some photos of the them.

There's 27 of them. Not sure why I didn't just round up to 30 when I bought them but oh well. Maybe if Lancer Miniatures ever adds anything else to their catalog of interest I'll pick up three more.

So here they are 27 brutish meat headed Orcs.

Hi folks,

A couple weeks ago the Mad Viking (Zak) sent me a Sister of Sigmar.  Thanks Zak!

So I painting her.  And that was all the inspiration I needed to finish painting off the few other Sisters Ive had kicking about.

The Bertha Bestraufrung I've had painted for a while and she's usually used as a warrior priestess in my Stirland army. I painted them in green rather then the tradition red to help match in with my Stirland army (Daughters of Freya?).

Title: Re: Orcyboy's hobby blog- Rangers
Post by: orcyboy on January 31, 2019, 06:48:48 AM
Rangers
The counts rangers are a hardy bunch of men (and women), skilled woodsmen and expert trackers. They patrol the woods and mountain passes, forming the first line of defense against the incursions greenskins.

The group is made up of all my odds and ends carrying bows or hunting crossbows.

I rounded off the unit with some of the new Oathmark humans. A nice kit of generic fighters and they make pretty good looking ranger types in my opinion
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cxpBiSOHHjg/XFKWYSB9swI/AAAAAAAAJco/YTjPqKCQKVMVfDo0h4TWSGa7nqdPKePJwCKgBGAs/s1600/hrangers2Oathmark.jpg)

Some of my favorites here. From the left we have an Asgard/Viking Forge (Sternbow), a Citadel AD&D Ranger, Citadel Boromir (the new line) and another Citadel AD&D ranger.

More favorites. All three are Citadel, the Indian (I call him chief Falling Rocks) and the mountain man on the right are two of my favorite Citadel pieces and make perfect rangers.

I believe the chap on the left is from Grenadier, the dwarfess is a Reaper bones (Dwarf or just a full figured lass?) and the lad on the right is an old Tom Meier/Ral Partha elf.

I believe these are Ral Partha, two of which are from their old Dragonlance line. I'm not sure who makes the Robinhood looking fellow.

I also picked up a new scenery piece from a Hobby Lobby discount bin. Its one of those garden fairy decoration pieces but I think it fits in fine as a fantasy tree house and scales well enough.

Hello!

I have gotten a few things painted over the past couple months I just can't find the time to take proper pictures.

However, this morning I was messing around with a job lot of  goblins in desperate need of repairs. I am a sucker for cheap ebay auctions of busted up minis. Anyways, I finally found a use for all those Reaper Bones models I have laying about.  I must admit I am a little disappointed in many of the Bones models with the exception of the larger models and the price point, but they do prune easily enough.

And now I have seven more proper (mostly metal) Goblins on the painting line.

Hopefully pics of painted minis coming soon.

As seen in a the background of a few my previous pics here is a little better look at my Goblin village.

The huts are from Scotia Grendal's 'Goblin Stronghold' set, with the taller tower huts created by simply stacking them up. To help bulk them out a little I based the huts either individually or in multiples together and built fences and gardens around them to help give a lived in feel.

Most of the goblin villagers are from Four A Miniatures with a few citadel mixed in and a Reaper Bones pig cart.

I am of course a bit Oldhammer in my approach to Goblins. I'm old enough to remember when Goblin alignment was classified as "neutral" albeit with a lean towards evil, do to their poor upbringing, lack of a stable home and proper father figure etc.  Its their affinity with hanging out with Orcs, those damn enablers, that leads them down the wrong path.
Under proper circumstances Goblins can be quite congenial and may make outstanding citizens of the Empire some day.  :-P

that is the best thing I have ever read about goblins ..love it. Im going to start a goblin heritage foundation to rescue goblins who have  wondered down bad paths and try to rehabilitate them.

I also added eight more Orcs to my Orc villagers lot. That puts me at a unit 35 Orc levies.
I got these guys from our very own Zak the mad Viking.  I suspect they might be SteveB jobs so I didnt touch the paint jobs just cleaned up the chipped paint (maybe Zak can confirm?). I did however re-do the bases to match my own.

And I finally finished the big Orc hut. That things been sitting on my hobby desk for 10 years or more, looks like crap but hey its off my desk.

 Orc and Goblin boar chariots
I added a couple more chariots to the ever expanding Goblinoid army. The Orc chariot is pieced together from left over job lots. The Goblin chariot is the old Goblin King Chariot, however the Goblin king himself went missing and replaced by an appropriately mean looking gobbo.

Orktober 2019 I got the band together.
Just a quick one for this Orctober (Orktober). After more then 25 years I finally got the band together.  I originally bought and painted these guys when they first came out (1991?) but unfortunately I got a little screwed as my pack was missing the fist pump guy but came with an extra guitarist (bassist?).

A couple year ago I manage to get a hold of the missing dude and this past weekend I painted him up in time to celebrate Orktober.

Sorry, no time for good pics, the phone camera will have to suffice for now.

Shame they never made a proper drummer for the band, but I'm sure I can rummage something up before next Orktober.

The past couple months have actually been pretty productive. I've finished off another unit of wolf riders, expanded my old unit of Goblin infantry from 30 to 42, finished a unit of armored elite Goblins, various terrain and about 10 or so Goblin heroes and what-nots.  I just don't have the time to properly take pics. Hopefully the middle of next month I can find some time.

For the next few months I'm putting the greenskins aside to work on my Border Princes mercenary army.  Since I've got the camera phone out here's sneak peak of what I'm working one.  I'm going for a generic celtic/gaelic look.

These are the Oathmark infantry with a few head swaps from various Fireforge plastics. The couple command figures are Galloglass by Antidiluvian miniatures I think.

Hahah your costume reminds me of the Gummi Bear Ogres  :icon_mrgreen:.

The goblin village is fabulous, FABULOUS you hear me?

Man these old civilian sculpts ooze character. And there's something more to them. Something that was lost and never returned to the Citadel miniatures: the backdrop for all the military conflict that Warhammer games concentrate on. I've always felt that the Old world was severely underdeveloped in that regard, when it comes to the fluff. At least when it comes to the 7th - 8th ed publications that I remember better.

Anyways, wonderful work on the paintjobs and scenery  :eusa_clap:.

Title: Re: Orcyboy's hobby blog (The Killing Fields Terrain)
Post by: orcyboy on November 24, 2019, 08:11:23 AM
I've had this new Killings Fields Terrain mat for over a month now. https://www.killingfieldsterrain.com/ (https://www.killingfieldsterrain.com/)

Finally had the time today to pull it out of its box and offer some initial thoughts.

I had a couple major concerns when I bought it a few of which proved correct.

My first concern was where and how to store it. It appears thick and spongy in the advert pics and this seems to be mostly true. Its not quite as thick as I had feared but its about a 1/4" thick at the moment.  However it was packed folded up and vacuum sealed in a bag and as it airs out over night it may swell up, we'll see in the morning.  But regardless if I roll it up its going take up a good amount of space, I'm just not sure where I'll be able to squirrel it away when not in use.

My second biggest fear or maybe it should be my first biggest fear is that it will be a cat magnet. Upon opening it and getting a feel for it, I now have no doubt this thing will be a cat magnet! I may have just purchased 7x5 foot litter box.  Not sure how to describe it but the rough texture combined with the soft earthy feel, I'm sure the cats will take turns clawing, chewing and pissing on it. Especially depraved indoor cats like mine.

Because it was packed folded up it has some terrible creases and wrinkles in it. I've packed books on the worst of it.  Since the photos were taken I pulled it tight at the corners and added heavier weights at the four corners to try and keep it a little stretched.  It has a stretchy property to it that I kind of like and might make it easier to slide books or whatever under to make natural looking hills.

One slight downside is single miniatures have a little difficulty standing up on it and appear to float above ground a little. Its even worse for small based plastic miniatures. However its not as terrible as I thought it could have been and I think its more of a problem for 20mm based miniatures then 25mm and up.

Also for use with large unit type games movement trays will be a must or you'll have to pick up miniatures individually to move them, you cant just push them around the table. Movement trays also help alleviate the floating somewhat.

Hopefully it will air out and flatten out over night and I'll try and take more pics tomorrow.

After letting it sit over night most of the folds and wrinkles worked themselves out. However to really use this terrain mat you really need to pull it tight across the board and keep it tight to reduce the spongy-ness. I haven't quite figured out how best to do that.

Its really not a good option if you play a lot of games or want to whip out a quick game with a friend.  It does look beautiful and if you're more into dramatic affects and enjoy very casual slow paced games then I think its fine.

I spent yesterday afternoon taking pictures of most of the stuff I've painted over the past couple months before rolling it up.
Like clock-work, as soon as I had it rolled up one of the cats jumped on the pool table and barfed.  So I dodged a bullet I suppose.  Cleaning up-chuck out that thing would be a fare bit of work unlike most of the neoprene based mats you'd simply wipe it off.

The cigar Box mats look nice but I haven't been able to bring myself to buy one. They seem a little expensive for just a blanket. I hear they will start producing double sided ones soon if not already, maybe if they price isn't too bad I'll try one.

But for now I'm liking my FLG mats the best.

 Even more Goblin Wolfriders!
My third unit of Goblin Wolfriders and I can say I'm thoroughly tired of painting wolves. For this interested here's links to the previous wolfrider units completed:

These guys should be the last of my Citadel and Marauder wolfriders I have kicking about and are a little bit of a hodgepodge. Mostly just basic goblins with hand weapons and shields and I can split 5 or 6 off into their own unit with short bows.

No name for these guys yet.

Back to the common goblins.

This is my primary regiment of standard everyday Goblins that I've run with for years.  For years they've only numbered at 30 troopers.  I finally got around to re-organizing them. Pulled a few out to join other upcoming units and padded up the unit to a head count of 42 Gobbos.

42 looks and feels much better than 30.
Here's the original: https://oldorcsneverdie.blogspot.com/2012/10/whats-blog-without-picture-to-get-it.html (https://oldorcsneverdie.blogspot.com/2012/10/whats-blog-without-picture-to-get-it.html)

Armored Goblin Mercenaries
An advanced sense of self preservation, short attention span, a bit treacherous, dimwhitted...   just a few reasons Goblins make terrible soldiers.

But occasionally after surviving a few battles through luck and uncharacteristic courage (mostly luck though) a few Goblins find themselves with the skills and prestige necessary to make a living as professional soldiers to a degree.

Occasionally these "fearless" Goblins band together under the leadership of some famed Goblin hero and ply their trade as mercenaries.

Here we have Mad Mic'Alexon and the Black Iron brigade. Have peasants that need subduing, they can help. Halflings that need extorting, they can help. Luggage needs guarded, they can help. Yeah, don't expect too much from these guys, they are still Goblins after all.

The Black Iron brigade are arrayed in pieced together heavy armor with large extravagant helmets being particularly prized and they are drilled in the use of the halberd in imitation of the soldiers of the realms of men.

Most of these guys are from Knightmaregames line of Greenskin Wars goblins.  A few are from other sources such as Four A Miniatures, Rafm and Citadel. A few are sad plastic Gobbos I greenstuffed some extra armor onto to push the head count of the unit up to 30.

Thanks for looking, more coming soon.

It's a very nice mat and big 7'x4' if I recall. It looks beautiful and makes for some great picture taking.  The down side is it takes a while to setup and needs to be stretched into place. You'll also need movement trays to push the units around soft static grass surface.  The FLG mats are better for heavy gaming.

Goblin heroes, rogues and adventurers
A mixed bag of Goblin hero sorts that I finished off a couple months ago.  Mostly Knightmare Games but a few other manufacturers as well.

The fantastic fellow in the middle is from 4A Miniatures and one of my favorites. His no-nonsense expression commands respect.

A couple more Knightmare Games goblins. Excellent examples of Kev 'Goblinmaster' Adams excellent work. If Frazetta ever painted heroic goblins I'd imagine they'd look exactly like the fella with the axe, I'm sure he stole that helmet from Thulsa Doom himself.

I call him the stag hunter. This is a formerly Heart Breaker (Tim Prow) goblin now reproduced in resin by Impact! miniatures.  A good sharp miniature and another one of my favorites with his outrageous antlers and giant sword. Definitely not the sort of gobbo to mess with.

An exceptionally well armored goblin with his pet squigly beast. Painted in bronze as he reminds me of some old Homeric aged warrior.

Another quirky gobbo and his squig hound picked up with the Shield Wall kickstarter. Despite being resin he's quite a nice miniature.

A Harlequin/Black Tree Design goblin shaman and another Knightmare Games goblin. I wasn't impressed with the shaman until after I painted him. He turned out quite nice and is now one of my favorite goblin shaman models. This picture doesn't quite bring out much of his details.
As for the samurai gobbo, I have a handful of eastern and samurai styled goblins but this one is easily my favorite. Not sure if thats supposed to be his natural face or if he's wearing a menpo, so either he's wearing face armor or he's painted his face to look like he's wearing face armor.

A nice champion with a commanding pose and a wonderfully gobliny shield. The usual excellent work of Kev Adams for Knightmare Games.

And last a goblin hero to help lead my considerable and ever expanding wolf rider legions.

So much character in those models. The stag hunter is a good reminder of how great and wacky at the same time goblins can be.

 Highlanders and mountain folk
The great mountains surrounding the empire of men are full of fierce monsters, goblinoids of all sorts and bitter weather.
Few men choose to live under such conditions but those that do are as rugged as the mountains and as fierce as the beasts that surround them not to mention generally drunk on a variety of distilled liquors.
Some are mere bandits and ruffians no better then Goblins and Orcs but most are god fearing men and make hardy allies for both the dwarves of the mountains and the mighty realms of men.

Here is my envisioning of a band of Grey Mountain highlanders.  Made from the the Oathmark generic humans. I was tempted, as most people seem to be, to change their shields out with rounds ones.  However I decided to stick with the square shields as the shape is a little reminiscent of the square Pictish shields that shows up in art work. Painted in lots of yellows, greens and some plaids with an aim of giving them a more generic Celtic/Gaelic look with a fantasy flare. Added a few heads from Fireforge miniatures and their captain and bagpiper are from Antediluvian Miniatures Galloglass.

I have a second unit of these fantasy Highlanders I am working on using FireForge Scandinavians. Given the holidays are slowing progress down a bit hopefully in the next month or two I'll have them finished.

Since I had them out, here's a quick pic of the Perry Miniatures medieval cottage.  Its a nice model but a little bit too pricey for what you get.  The smaller houses in the background are from Renendra, nifty little models and much better priced.

Bye for now and Merry Christmas!

Another batch of wonderful minis ans terrain! Well done!!!

Is there a chance for a more in focus picture of the rendedra houses? Is the scale good? At 5 pounds per model they seem too good to be true.

They are more of an outhouse building - somewhat smaller than the cottage in front. I got 4 of them in a special deal at Salute - two of each, and they are certainly good value at a fiver - even better on the deal I got at the show.  :biggriin:

Approx Measurements - 4" long by 2.5" wide and 2.5" High

Your collection of goblins is inspiring, as always.

I really like your work on the Oathmark humans. I've got a couple of boxes ready for painting in the new year, nice to see an example of them painted up. I'm also keeping the rectangular shields. I like what you've done with them. My thought was something similar but from a slightly different source.

It's been a while since I've had time to look through your progress, so I'm just now getting around to saying that I am in awe of your orc costume! Right out of the Rankin-Bass movies!

Once an Orc always an Orc!

The good folks of Neuleicheberg gather in owe as they find themselves the proud owners of their first steam tank. Purchased on discount and in pieces from the world famous engineering college of Buggerhoff (silent H).  The local Neuleicheberg engineers after months of research and painstaking work have managed to cobble the old dog back together.

So I acquired this old steam tank quite a while back. If you haven't figured it out she comes from the collection of the late and great Steveb.  It came to me a in a state of disrepair but it wasn't too much work piecing her back together.  Judging from the original paint job I don't think this was one of Steve's favorite tanks, I'd call it about 75% done compared to the rest of his work I've seen.
So I touched up the paint job quite a bit and added a bit more detailing.  Hopefully SteveB approves.

Did you do something to get rid of the print layer lines? Sand it? Fill it in somehow?

Nah, I didn't do anything maybe Steve had. The print layers on the top deck work out as it looks like wood grain.

Looks like the old man Slurd and the town hag are at it again. Sgt Schnekel of the town guard will have to put a stop to it before gets out of hand.

With the exception of the town guard and the woman in blue these are all previously unpainted miniatures from SteveBs collection (at least as far as I know).  The hook handed fella' up front is the semi-rare Slurd of the Death on the Reik character collection.

Over the past year I put together what I call a Border Princes mercenary army.

For the core of the army I used Fireforge's Forgotten World northmen, nice generic looking fellas.  I tried to go for more subdued colors and was hoping they'd have a little Balkan's look to them.

Here is King Philippos grand army.

The phalanx of 42 spearmen to hold the line. This was my first attempt at printing out decals to decorate the shields and I think it came out pretty well.

A unit of halberds to add a little oomph.

The bowman
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51003696831_a689004d6b_o.jpg)

Artillery!

The vanguard of the army, the Gray Cloak Companions.

The light cavalry. Not the best work. They are pieced together from left over parts and I used toy horses.  A little bit of a disapointment, maybe if I added more tack to the horses but I got bored with it and move on.

If you really need a job done right, hire yourslf some ogre soldiers.

And last for today. Benny the Bouncer!  The coolest giant I own. I picked him up on ebay on whim for next to nothing. I had no idea what I had gotten. All I had to go by was a date and a Ral Partha stamp on the bottom but I couldn't find him in any Ral Partha or Iron Winds Metals catalogs. Eventually I sourced him to a semi-obscure game called Carnage which I also happened to own but I had no idea they made supplements for it. https://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/166459/carnage
Now he serves as a bit of muscle in king Philippos' army.

The regular warriors are made up mostly Oathmark men.  I can't remember where the command miniatures are from Claymore maybe?

The kit seems to have been meant to create a unit of mixed weapons.
A lot of the problems had to do with the arms, there isn't enough to make them all spearmen or bowman etc.  I wanted to give them all double handed weapons.

To make it a little worse, some of the guys have chain mail and some have scale mail so technically you'd match the arms up with the appropriate armor which limits your options. Of course I ignored that, I think once painted you can barely notice the different between the chain mail shirt and scale mail arms.

The Nuln Mercenary Spearmen aka the Nuln Spearman.

Headquartered in Nuln and generally recruited from dropouts and flunkies of the various gunnery schools. The Nuln Spearmen ply their trade throughout the Empire.  Despite their mercenary profession, they are loyal to the Imperial crown and would never take up arms against those favored by the Emperor.

Once thought of as elusive or just a legend, they are becoming common sight an the battle fields of the Empire.

Love the banner!

The spearmen are very chunky models. Where are they from?

She's from a group of RNestudio women villagers I printed up and test painted using Army Builder speed paints.  While I enjoy the results of the speedpaints and they are fun to use, its just not quite my style.  They are very lovely miniatures though imo.

A few months back I uploaded a video trying to showcase my Empire army.  Its a little cringy but it was a good learning experience with the camera.
The sudden spark in feedback on video is inspiring, I'll have to try some more.

Posted on Youtube and Rumble. As much as I'd prefer to make Rumble my go-to video upload source, their video quatlity is awful.  Youtube is closer to actual high def.

It's a good video. Nice 'stills' of and story for each unit, and good info on the models.

Love you mentioned the forum and the steam tank you got from here.

The Sorceress could easily be turned into Blacker II's Liz the 1st

I think I got the Dwarves from Oldschoolminiatures https://www.oldschoolminiatures.co.uk/old-school-miniatures

The Wizard is from Wargames foundry and the sorceress is 3d print from Titan Forge (Scarlet Marquis)

Interesting developments coming from the "The Old World Almanack"
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/12/18/old-world-almanack-mustering-the-grand-army-of-bretonnia/

"The Grand Army is not the only way to select a force, however. Each faction will gradually gain access to Armies of Infamy, which provide often wildly different ways to muster a force. As a Bretonnian Lord, you might wish to enter exile – especially as it means you can then take forbidden Border Princes Bombards into battle, while those who really just enjoy Knights and more Knights may prefer an Errantry Crusade."

Sound like my Bretonnian L'Ordonnance is back on the table.

Continuing progress on my Undead armies. Hope to finish them by the end of 2024 (a new years resolution I guess).

The undead dragon. A quick paint job for this Reaper Bones miniature.
