Those look pretty sweet. Really alien and squidy.

I don't know much about Dropfleet, what faction are they?

That would make an awful lot of sense from the look of them.

If I buy a 2player starter set before my commodore arrives, (I'm going on holiday next week and would love to have the book before then) would anyone fancy splitting the box for the UCM sprues and the rulebook from my pledge once it arrives?

Just copied those over to Matt  :engel:

He has been working on his Tor stuff though.

They look great. How did you do the painting?
There are 40 different shades of black, so many fortresses and ways to attack.

So why you complaining!

watered down layers guilleman blue glaze, leviathan purple and baal red over a silver spray. (I think I didnt water down enough, and also think it should be more purple/reddish.

light drybrush of balthasar gold, focusing on the spines.

Nuln oil gloss over the top to blend it together and make it shiny.

Very light highlight of my lightest silver on the edge of the spines.

Waystone green technical paint for the eyes on the front. (wondering if I should do this red for more contrast?)

Pretty quick and easy but not 100% happy with it

people are selling sets of each factions ships from the pledge for £90 each.
the pledge cost £150!

90x4> 150.

Wish I'd done 2 pledges and got my lot for free!

I know!

overbought the wrong one.

Nevermind, £150 for the commodore pledge is still an insanely good deal.

Hoping to get a test game in this weekend (and so finish my starter fleet painting by then)

we played about 4 turns- I hadn't set up the table before hand and Matt needed to go at 5. We went slower than I expected, but I really should have pre-set the table!

turn 1- we both moved on, My scourge on silent running.

pic of my fleet- not quite finished but probably can't tell the difference from here.

I dropped a couple of my frigates into low atmosphere then used them to active scan his ships, and did a bit of damage to both the opposition cruisers, including a double 6 from my shenlong, doing 2 criticals, and as a 2damage weapon 4 damage without saves!

Matt's light cruiser then shot at my frigate in low atmosphere, using the "calibre" special rule to boost his effectiveness.
2 damage cripples my frigates, and most crippled results do 2 more damage, so my frigate died.

He also shot my heavy cruiser with his gun frigates, rolling 5 4+ on 6 dice, resulting in 3 damage.

I "weapons free" my Shenlong and battered his carrier, leaving it with 2 hull points and unable to shoot or launch any ships next turn.

in retaliation Matt managed a mazimum of 6 damage with his burnthrough laser against the Shenlong.

this is when I forgot to carry on taking photos!

My Wyvern (close action cruiser) then annihilated a frigate and MAtt tried to ram his damaged and no weapons cruiser into it, but failed the roll and so it died.

At some point matt killed one of my strike carriers and right before he had to go I blew up his heavy cruiser, whixh exploded and killed my cruiser and crippled my other cruiser.

At the end of turn 4 there wasn't too much left on the board- a crippled cruiser and 2 frigates for me, and a crippled cruiser and 3 frigates for Matt.
Matt had both strike carriers alive though, so likely would have won if we'd carried on.

It was fun, but 4x3 definitely felt too small.

I really liked the alternate activation and strategy element with battlegroup ordering.
Need to figure out how to do damage and not get blatted in return! Scourge want to get close, I think I did a bit too much shooting early on, instead of going silent running as long as possible then trying to go for a big blast at the start of turn 3 or something.

It looks fun! I like the planetary surface map. I'd like to play this.

but 4x3 definitely felt too small.

Was that the recommended size for that number of ships?

that's the size of the paper maps you get in the starter box- and it comes with a recommended scenario for starter fleet vs starter fleet (which is roughly 550 vs 550)

I definitely wouldn't want to play 1000 pts on 4x3, or 1500 on 4x4. I think i'll buy a 6x4 matt like Adam did.

Also I feel the need for accesories to mark the sectors, clusters and debris fields- people have started to produce them.

Oh and the damage pegs on the bases definitely didn't work, and im not convinced about the atmosphere/spike use either, so need either tokens/counters for that, or paper book keeping like you need with BFG.

Matts hoping to come round one evening soon-ish (so no child interference) and I can pre-prepare the table and try and note down a proper battle report.
It was hard to do the battle report with the alternate activations and changing battlegroup activation order.

It does seem like a small playing area, but I wondered if the game was designed with that size in mind. Perhaps you aren't supposed to have a lot of maneuver room!

I didn't realise that you track damage on the models in this. Do the bases track the relative altitudes of the ships too?

Just taking regular photos and giving an overview on what happened is good enough. There's no need to give a lot of detail.

thought detail maybe good so people get more an idea of how the game actually works.

yes, the regular bases have an inner ring that twists inside the main base, that you use to track orbital layer (high orbit, low orbit, atmosphere) and "spikes"- you get spikes from firing certain weapons or doing orders, or being scanned, and the increase the range you can be shot at.

you suffer penalties shooting between orbital layers, and your ships die if they go into Atmosphere unless they have "atmospheric" special rule.
shooting in atmosphere only hits on 6s unless

The bases also have little holes to stick the damage pegs in, but way too fiddly.

If you don't have manuevre room, the games will just turn into a huge fight on the center board I think! Maybe they're meant to.

Good point! Go for detail then.  :icon_razz:

It looks great as a game.
I think the ships will standout better against a black background though.
I bet the bases seemed like a great idea, but are a bit fiddly in practice.
I'd also like to give it a go. We'll have to meet up in the new year.

you're not "supposed" to use a black background, as it's all about dropping assets onto critical locations on planets.

I believe there are some scenarios with space stations, though.
