8th Edition Starter Set ?
« on: November 23, 2017, 11:19:21 PM »
Is there an 8th Edition starter set?

If yes, does it come with a small rule book like the good ole days?

There's multiple now GP!

First you have the main starter set Dark Imperium
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Warhammer-40000-dark-imperium-eng-2017

This is the usual 2 armies, mini rulebook, get starting quick rules, etc. Just like the traditional starter sets.

But wait, there's more!

There's also Know No Fear, which is a smaller starter set. Same models, same mini rulebook, about half the amount/size. Also comes with a mini board.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/40k-know-no-fear-2017-ENG

Then we downsize again for First Strike. This one has the quick start rules, a handful of models, the same board (I think), and a quick backstory summary.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/40k-first-strike-2017-ENG

(Ignore the Canadian prices. The names are what's important so you can find it one your local gdubs.)

Yep, Dark Vengeance was 7th Edition 40K, and I have that set.  Believe I might have opened it once, and that it is the initial boxed set that had a character figure in it or some such.

- - -

Wow, 3 starter sets for 8th Edition, that's different.  Can't recall that happening previously.  Perhaps I'll pick one up just for the small rule book.

Not sure I'm into the Chaos figures though, but we'll see.

Small Correction there Gankom!

The Dark Imperium does not have the mini rulebook.. it has the full sized one

The other 2 have a smaller introduction book (read thinner, still about A4 sized pages I believe)

Are the "mini rule book" and "quick start rules" in Gankhom's post the same thing?

Nah not really the QSR is a leavelet of about 12 pages with the core rules, enough to play the basic game with 1 scenario

Dunno what is exactly in the mini rule books.. more like a storyline thing about the box set and an intro to the full fledged rulebook.

A real mini rulebook as we used to have doesn't exist this edition as far as I know

Your right of course. The rulebook in dark imperium looked smaller then the big hard back so I assumed it was more like the mini rulebook that came with the previous fantasy starter armies. Turns out it's not!

The quickstart leaflets are pretty much the same rules as the free download, some backgrounds on the universe and I think some sort of tutorial scenarios using the models in the set.

I had thought that Know No Fear had the same rulebook as Dark Imperium but now looking at the pictures closer I'm not so sure.

So my confusion continues ... :icon_lol:

Is the rule book in the $190 Dark Imperium just a mini rule book or not?  That's a bummer if a person buys that package for that amount of $s, and then doesn't get a real rule book of some kind.

No SKS is right, the rulebook in Dark Imperium is the full, hard cover book as far as I can tell. You can see it standing up by the box in the picture. When I glanced at it last night I missed it and lumped it in with the small primaris/deathguard army pamphlets. I'm tried to help and I'm causing so much confusion! Just like my Rugby career.

It is the real, full rulebook in Dark Imperium. The other starter sets have correspondingly smaller, more quick start style rulebooks.

I have both sets, Dark imperium definitely has a full rulebook!

Know no fear is a real beginners set. The minirule book has some fluff and painting tips. 6 scenarios that introduce models from the set and extra rules every scenario. A nice way to get new people in!! The core rules in the book dont include battleforged rules or objectives etc. Its Basically the same rule set as the free download.

Ha!  That'd be the day. :icon_lol:

Since it was mentioned the rules that come with "Know No Fear" are the same as the "free download", I'm going to see if I can hunt those up, and find out what that's about.  Maybe if those work, I can give a go to some basic 40K again, and experience the new rules.

Thanks! :::cheers:::

I like the idea of them only being 15 pages long.

Haven't had a moment yet to read them, so ... do we need to have up-to-date army codexes to use the rules?

Uh oh, that means me picking up Space marines and Orks, bummer.  Eventually Tau and IG, too.  Oh well.

Only marines and guard out so far
There are 40 different shades of black, so many fortresses and ways to attack.

So why you complaining!

Ah, so no one is using any of the other armies currently with the new rules? :icon_wink:

I have been getting back into it too.
The 5 Index books cover all existing armies - the Imperium II one I have covers IG, and SoB and various other non Space Marine stuff - playable lists.
The full IG codex just goes into more detail and has some 'extra' special rules - I think doctrines is the concept.
Bit like how the various factions in Mordheim - Averlanders, Middenheim, Reikland - had their own unique bonus.

Indeed. If you love the Guard, the Dex is must. The only thing missing is the Rough Riders, sadly.

However, it is perfectly legal to use the entry for Rough riders from the Index alongside your Codex built force, but the Riders cannot benefit from regimental doctrines.

I am finishing my long in the works Space russians who will fight with Valhallan rules.
Oh, and remember GW made it personal, not you!

Well i play deathguard  Just got into 40k, was looking for something new to throw my money at since WHFB died and after reading some horus heresy novels i was sold. I think I lucked out with the treatment they got in this edition because id decided on them before the edition dropped, mainly because they are the complete opposite of dark elves which was my main army in fantasy.

Love the models, got me painting again. Gamewise im not sure yet, only played 3 games, 1 with the new codex and only against spacewolves. Still kinda figuring out the game and armies so only with powerpoints so far.

People tend to use loads of poxwalkers apparently, but i think there are a lot of other viable options in the book.
