It already was, actually. Free speech and all. This doesn't allow anything that wasn't already allowed.

I know you don't mean that for schools though.

Well, sort of. The 1st amendment is tricky.

In practice, no. But, school officials were not required to treat the bullying of gays as hate crimes (which, IIRC, the bill mandates with this religious exception).

I actually get amused in conversations when someone asks why people are afraid to come out nowadays as we're so "modern" and "accepting".

And that's in Britain, which is still full of unpleasantness.

BNP hold the same beliefs as your average overly religious republican, I reckon. ie, the arizona immigration stuff going down ATM.

A massive portion of the USA is overly religious, and it has been allowed to effect politics too much.

I don't disagree, I'm just pointing out that Britain and the rest of the world is not free from the phenomenon.

For the record, only 12% of Americans identify as Tea Partiers or support the Tea Party.

Now if only 12% wasn't a significant amount. Oh wait, it is.

Say if it was 1.2%... and even then.

And of course every country is full of shit. If we focus on that how the fuck can we get a good hatin' on for anyone in particular?

Let Finlay have his 'merkin bashing.

12% is a massive proportion, and they are only the middleground of crazed religious republicans.
I bet less than 1% of Britain is BNP.

The religious attitude of America is a bit backwards.

Religious craziness is probably more prevalent in American than anywhere else in the world which isn’t Islamic. and it effects all of America.

creationism in school. say wut.

From my experience the Tea Party is not the middle-ground. They're pretty close to as polarized as it gets.

The Westboro guys are at most 100 people. Also, literally no one else in the country agrees with them. You can't use them as a measure of the rest of the country.

Anyway, scale of 1-10.

1 are normal, moderate republicans. 10 are the Westboro idjits.

Tea Party is about a 6.5-7.5.

The creepiest thing about WBC is that there are -multiple- lawyers in the family. For some reason the media has ignored the fact that their goal is to get attacked so they can sue the city they're in for not protecting them. So yeah, wishing that the US had European-style hate speech laws won't do me much good. The best thing is to simply ignore them.

Total free speech is one of the best things about the US IMO.

If we had "total free speech" I'd be allowed to shout "fire!" in a crowded theatre. Free speech ends when you're saying something that will cause injury.

SCOTUS just ruled that pornographic videos involving kittens, puppies, ducklings, and other animals being crushed to death are "free speech". But if you're a veteran protesting the power of the banks in Oakland you get a flashbang to the face. I love America.

creationism in school. say wut.

Now don't get me wrong here, there are so many things wrong with the WBC, I'm just being devil's advocate.

What's wrong with creationism in school when atheistic or theistic evolution is also taught?  These all require faith to believe in since evolution isn't directly observable.  Don't get me wrong I can poke some pretty big hole's in creationism (the easiest being 'how can you use the bible as a scientific account when it never claims to be?) but it's no less flawed than atheistic or theistic evolution.

The religious atitude everywhere in the world is a bit backwards:
-Anders the crazy Norwegian (was his belief in a non-islamic europe not akin to religious fanatacism?)
-Dawkins and social darwinism: this belief is certainly religious in nature: using the theory of evolution to come to a conclusion that God, a metaphysical being, can be dis-proven by physical theories.  That certainly requires faith.
-Atheism: Believing that there is no God and then making your own judgments about the how the world runs requires the same faith (in your self as a reasonable and logical medium) as any religious person.

The point I'm trying to make here is that human beings aren't totally logical, we all make judgments based on faith, which is why there are opposing views and parties.  Sure the crazies are annoying but without them we wouldn't have that diversity that makes life interesting.

Variety is the spice of life!

Wait this is an unhappy thread:

WBC can suck my d**k.
