I dunno, I don't picture Conan sneering a whole lot in the old stories like Momoa did. In the early stories Conan really has a more earnest attitude to contrast civilised people who are the real douches in Howard's stories, because Howard thought that civilisation makes people decadent. Howard used Conan to imply that a person without civilisation wouldn't have pretensions about his place in the world and would therefore be without decadence.

True but didn't Momoa kinda did that in the movie? One can say that his enemies were more "civilised" than he was. Certainly that was the case in th original movies.

Yeah, sure. I just don't think it's done in the Howard way. The movie tries to cover this up by splicing some lines from the books into different scenes.

The 2011 movie is probably a whole lot closer to the old book continuity, but I don't think it has a good Conan.

I liked Momoa, but Arnie will always be the one, true Conan for me. His movies are classics. He even managed to save Red Sonya.

For me, one asset of the 1982 movie is how "real" it feels - mostly because much of it was, in fact, real. Including the "Arnie gets almost eaten by dogs" and the "Sandahl almost has her finger cut off".

Also, casting a broadsword like that would be a disaster when actually used, but it sure looked cool.

I wonder though is it the first scene like that, I mean I think the 'cool sword casting shot' has become rather common in film or at least LotR and Game of Thrones had similar scenes. If it is the '82 Conan which the the progenitor of such scenes, I think that buys it a bit space in the whole casting a sword is daft realm.

Well, I think when the LOTR movies did it, Peter Jackson went for giving Isengard a heavily industrialised theme with mass production. You can also handwave the manufacturing with the fact that a wizard did it.

the mass rapes in Cologne were not spontaneous.

I know, and that makes me so sad. I mean, I would've loved to see Mara Jade, but all that is gone now. Even Jacen and Jaina Solo are gone.

No, he is. I can't find the article, but it was confirmed in it. Also, George Lucas already stated he was. Even if it makes no sense since he was such a minor character, he has a huge following. And he was a Mandalorian. Mandalorians kick ass. See my choose a side thread, I chose either the Empire or the Mandalorians.
