Hmmm I was under the impression that Nordland was the only province with access to the sea. May make a small Ostland force now.

By the way where did you get these maps they are gorgous.

Well, it seems as if I am the only one willing to serve Ostland. Well, if so, fine. I shall do so.

My army will be a special unit of the Ostland army, The Grand Regiment of Ostland. It was formed in the aftermath of the Storm of Chaos, when the land was shattered as was the army. Some units, being beyond reinstitution, where hastily formed into a large regiment, and it was soon to become known as the Grand regiment of Ostland. Due to the sacrifices made by all those survivors who ended up from different units, and the early battles of the regiment, where raw recruits and grizzled veterans fought shoulder to shoulder against what seemed overwhelming odds, the regiment got a new colour scheme for their uniforms.

Inspired by the famous Carroburg greatswords, the white was dyed red by whatever means possible, and the regimental colours became black and red, instead of black and white.

Mathi Alfblut, the acting colonel, is a Priest of Sigmar who came to end up as one of the few persons able to take command after and early engagement. But he soon proved to be an inspiring leader and his faith in Sigmar is rivaled only by the Arch lectors themselves. (I will use the Arch lector to represent Mathi Alfblut.

Oh, and remember GW made it personal, not you!

The Salkalten Expeditionary Brigade

The primary purpose of this army was to secure the route from Hasselhund to Ferlangdon; unfortunately the initial commander of the army, Hetmann Vytenis, was killed during the Battle of Elk Barrow, ran down by Wight Cavalry. Stratznik Svawn took command, but it wasn't long before instead of relying on his Sigmarite priestly advisers for wise council, he was simply passing their orders down to the troops.

The most dominant of these priests is Lector Kirchner, a avid supporter of the exiled Johann Esmer and a preacher of undeniable zealous persuasion, who gives three sermons daily, at which presence is mandatory and repentance encouraged. Under Kirchner's tight control, it soon become apparent to the Brigade that they were no longer securing any route to the fallen cities. They instead traveled deeper into the Forest of Shadows, battling strange creatures and coming upon the armies of those that truly have no place there. There was concern amongst the ranks, but the only attempt at mutiny was ended swiftly; the Regiment (the Birzai 2nd Handgunners) was charged with possessing the taint of Chaos and was executed, each and every man.

The Amethyst Wizard, Trismegistus, was the most outspoken antagonist of this bloody end to dissidence; his primary charge being that of reducing the manpower available to the force. Kirchner responded by recruiting a wandering band of flagellants, which 'happened' to be in the area. Trismegistus was further worried about what the army was turning into and suspicious of the hold Kirchner had over the Stratznik when a Banner from The Hunters of Sigmar, an obscure Sigmarite Knightly Order was drafted from a Monastery in Stirland. The Brigade soon effectively become two camps, with the zealous elements, Kirchner, Svawn, The Hunters of Sigmar, the Salkalten 1st Spears, the cultist warband, in one party, and the Knights of Blazing Sun, the Coalesced Swords of Aukrug, the 5th Salkalten Arbalests and the Altdorfic regiments led by Trismegistus in the latter party. Tensions ran high and distrust ran even deeper when it became apparent that a division from Hochland was trailing the Brigade. Trismegistus made way to the Hochland camp to negotiate, but he never returned (rumor amongst the Aukrug Swords, Svawn's unit, suggest that he never even got to the camp, both Svawn and his Dragon Bow were missing on the morning of Trismegistus's departing).

Consolidating his authority, Kirchner now continues to lead the Brigade deeper into the Forest, their ultimate goal known only to Kirchner. Those still alive who oppose him do so only in their thoughts, lest whispers betray them.

I will be setting up a painting blog soon and I might even start a gaming blog, a kind of ongoing battle report to demonstrate what I'm learning about playing the Empire army.

On the table, I play 2000pts, but could manage 3000pts using all my models including a Leadbelcher unit (which is kinda fluffy). The 'goal' of the army's expedition is to locate a forgotten shrine to Sigmar, part of which will form a war altar (under construction once I've painted a lot of the army). The story does kind of describe the units I've dropped and picked up along the way.

Hello all.  I’ve been reading this forum for a little while now and decided it was time I started contributing something.  My army doesn’t really have any specific fluff written up for it (I may get around to it eventually) but it is painted up (well, half of it is ) in Ostland colors.  I think the list also fits an Ostland theme pretty well.  Little/no nobles or cavalry, only black powder weapons bigger than a pistol are state owned war machines, troops generally skilled and don’t run often/ever, no wacky or experimental weapons.

As for me, I’m 19, live in Illinois, and I play at the Chicago land battle bunker in Downers Grove.  I’ve been playing empire for about a year, fantasy for about 2, and I played 40k for about 6 months before that (but I love my empire more than any other army I’ve had).  I’ve also got some dwarves and tomb kings, and I’m selling a decent sized lizardmen force, I also used to play wood elves (who had an record of no loses over their career).  I haven’t been keeping count of exactly how many wins/losses I've been getting, but is somewhere in the area of 6 or 7 to 1  :biggriin:

FOR THE EMPIRE!

Knights of the Black Rose fight in Ostland.  They are a very cool order who worship morr - the ancient god of death.

For more information on The Knights of the Black Rose (a.k.a Knights of Morr or Black Guard of Morr) as well as other orders have a look in the 'library' section of this website.

In addition you can go to the following website and download a copy of Total Power issue 10 (its a few years old) which has a whole section about Ostaland and the Knights of the Black Rose.

http://www.players-society.com/totalpower/

Below I've copied the section from that issue that deals with the Order.

The Knights of the Black Rose were trained to
combat the ravages of Chaos in all its forms. Like
many Ostlanders, the deity of the order is Morr, the
ancient god of death, and it is from one of the
symbols of Morr that the Order derives its name.
The Knights date their founding back to the early
War of the Vampire Counts, when Vlad von
Carstein ravaged the northern Empire. Disgusted by
the desecration of the dead and the torment of their
immortal souls, it was a time when many Ostlanders
returned to the old faith of Morr. In this religious
fervour, the greatest warriors were singled out by
the Elector Count of Ostland to fight Morr's battles
and to protect Wolfenburg.

By no means the oldest or greatest knightly order,
the Knights of the Black Rose only serve in the
army of Ostland. Their numbers have swelled since
their founding in 2011, but still they are relatively
few and used sparingly. Even so, to the true
worshippers of Morr, death holds little fear, and the
Knights of the Black Rose are renowned for their
bravery and determination in the face of
overwhelming odds.

The Knights wear blackened armour
as a sign of their patron deity, often trimmed with
bronze or brass.  The Knights of the Black Rose are
unusual in that they fight with cruel flails rather than
the lances of other Knightly Orders; their reasoning
is that lances break too quickly.

By the way, Welcome to the Empire!

Amazing...

My Ostlanders have a unit of flail-wielding knights (counts as great weapons) which need a paint job.

Excellent news, cheers.

Why not invent your own order with Ostland heraldry. I recall one of the 5th ed Bretonnian knights shields was a "Bulls head" design, get hold of a few of those and you've got youself "The Order of the Bull of Ostland".

Wouldn't be more appropriate to count them as lances? I mean since lances confer a very similar bonus to flails...

How much would Kislev influence Ostland? I mean what about names? The Elector count surely doesn't sound old Germanic. What do you think?

Kislev would have strong ties with Ostland, and in some regards the two would have a stronger relationship then that with the Emperor.  They have relied on each other for a long time for protection.

Greetings.
One of the contributers to Warpstone (a WHFRP fanzine) has posted a proposal on the Warpstone forums for a Ostland supplement he was designing. Some really neat background and info in here that might inspire some of you Ostlanders out there. I particularly enjoyed the stuff about the Red bull of Ostland.
Enjoy!

This was my "report in" post for the Empire of Middenland during the
Crisis in Marienburg campaign. I thought I'd post it here as an
introduction to this forum

1/ Main Nationality of your Army--Ostland!
2/ Name of the Leader of your Army--Grand Master Heingst Von Traup
The Von Traups were originally Middenlanders, but the family found
themselves in conflict with the ruling Todbringer clan during the
Vampire Wars. The family patriarch Karl was Grand Master of the
Knights Panther of Middenland at the time. He also commanded the
fortress of Helmgart. Grand Master Karl Von Traup was killed in
Nordland by the Sigmarite Priest Tomas der Gelben (a Stirlander), who
was serving as a vassal of Manfred Todbringer.  Karl's sons were
forced to leave Middenland, and settled in Ostland near the town of
Kurst.  The family has continued the tradition of serving as Templars
of the Knight's Panther. Heingst has risen to command the Panthers of
Ostland and is  a member of the Order of the Red Bull as well.
3/ Name of your Army and any related fluff--The Brotherhood of the Wolf
The Brotherhood has a long and illustrious history of battle. During
the Vampire Wars they saw action throughout the Empire from Axe Bite
Pass to Castle Drakenhof.  The Fiend of Essen was slain by an army led
by Mad Ulf Ulfsson.  The Brotherhood fought all of the Von Carstein
Counts. Since Hel Fenn, it has defended Ostland from all enemies and
as the Todbringers are no longer in power pledges its swords to
Middenland once again.  Also the Von Traups still have ancient claims
to certain Reikland, Stirland and Middenland castles and villages...
4/ # of Points you can field--5000 (with Kislevites)  I also have
several ships (Warhammer scale).

I have toyed with the Red Bull as a theme for an order of Knights
since I began collecting Empire models back in the dark ages. (Before
the Soda)  In those days Chaos Dwarfs could be encountered on local
gaming tables, so to be considered for membership in the order a
knight had to survive an encounter with a Great Taurus.

Heignst's descendants have remained in Ostland. They served with
distinction during the Storm of Chaos and have been fighting the
uphill struggle of reclaiming the land since the end of the invasion.
(Although in my local war the forces of chaos were soundly defeated
long before they could sack Wolfenburg...) Elements of the force still
reflect their Middenland roots.  Ulric is worshipped in private, no
martial priests of the Wolf accompany the army.

For Ostland!
