20mm vs 25mm bases
« on: July 13, 2018, 11:57:54 AM »
Hi all,

What are your opinions regarding 25mm vs 20mm square based units,  in WHFB from a statistical / strategy angle?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Units on 25mm bases tend to be tougher. Units on 20mm bases tend to be cheaper.

You can pack 6 20mm bases against 5 25mm bases, without the potential 6th 25mm base being able to fight. This adds a little bit effective value (attacks, wounds) to the 20mm based unit.

Basic size small regiments (5x4) of 20mm might be marginally more maneuverable. Hordes of 20mm are more maneuverable.

25mm are more resilient against template weapons.

Off the cuff, an advantage 25mm bases have over 20mm based units is the number of models that fall under the affects of are effect templates. (less models).

Or 7 if the 25mm unit is only 5 wide, of course.

Unless you have a strategic need to fill space with less models, the only game advantage of larger bases is the template weapons thing, really. Non-gaming, GW have been designing every model in the last 10 years or more like it should be on a bigger base...

I always preferred 20mm myself, for aesthetic reasons like Chumley. I just always liked the look of a good old fashioned shieldwall, and I found 20mm did that better. 25mm models tended to be much bigger and looks like more impressive individuals.

It was common in WAB to base close formed troops on 20mm bases and light troops & skirmishers on 25mm bases. I like how this both looked and played.

Pretty sure 1st ed Warhammer had different base sizes for close order, standard and skirmish troops? Very much reminiscent of "proper" historical wargames rules of the time (if you never had to grapple with the concept of Light Heavy Infantry, consider yourselves lucky!)

I was going to say they should implement a rule like that. Looks like they already did and since scrapped it.
