Thanks guys!

Still need to get new legs - so far it's cuirass, helmet and arms (I prefer not to wear the gauntlets most of the time, I find they impede the use of the pollaxe).

You can see it here, I'm the second one on the left. Four of our Templar fist form the front row, seconds before combat is joined (3 full brothers and novice Lily on the far left). In the middle is brother Tristan, our oldest (and tankiest  :-D) member, he's 51.

Are you right into making the armor and gear yourself? The Re-enactors over here are quite popular, but they tend to be a bit more hodge podge of history or focused on the French & Indian war stuff.

Nah, I ain't no smith, and I'm no good at tailoring! I have my stuff made.
 :-D

Besides, this is LARP, not Reenactment. At most events, there tends to be a bit of a hodgepodge too, stylistically. Which is only natural, since theere isn't one overarching setting that's being played everywhere. There kind of is, in the form of the Südlande campaign - which is a union of orgs from southern Germany who divvied up the fictional continent of the Southlands many years ago, each org playing / managing one country - but that's more to give a couple thousand players a shared world where we're on the same map, but it's still "your country, your call". That means it's a classic fantasy continent, with everything from Celts to Renaissance, whatever each org is into. We're in there too, as the island of Ak'Marant.

Our group is slowly gravitating towards a mid/late 15th century style, but nowhere near consistent enough overall for reenactment purposes, even if we weren't playing a fantasy background. A lot of our members could do 15th century Reenactment with their kit no problem, including me, but not the group as a whole. And besides, reenactment doesn't really tickle me. I wanna play! And I don't care that my doublet has machine stitching on the interior seams. And if I fancy a jacket that's 30 years later than the rest of my outfit, I wanna be able to go for it, not agonize over the fact it'd be slightly anachronistic to the rest of my outfit.

Lol sounds pretty sweet. I've seen some re-enactor groups schism and fall apart because some people got a bit to obsessed about historical accuracy. Every loves having their costume be as close as possible, but some people started demanding all the camping and ALL talking be in character/accurate as well.

I mostly hang around the re-enactors because I do some peripheral crafting skills. I did blacksmithing for years, and I currently do a fair bit of leatherwork. The LARPer's here tend to be more vampires or high fantasy, so it's a much different atmosphere.

LARP is a very different entity to historical re-enactment. The latter is an attempt to recreate historical skirmishes and camps etc, and has an audience (the public). That's what I do. LARP is roleplay, but not tabletop, but a fully, hands on, dressed up, act your role version.

The groups I am in make a lot of effort to be as historically accurate as possible. But as it seems to be a 'dying hobby', we are somewhat skewed in the age range. Basically we are nearly all too old to be soldiers!

Here we are in 1715, drilling to face the highlanders of the first Jacobite rebellion. I am the sailor who has been drafted to make up numbers!

And here we are London Trained Band soldiers of the English Civil war. I am blowing on my matchcord to keep the coals burning bright. We must be about to shoot,

Well I had some in my painting blog I was going to link, only to discover all my pictures are down for some reason! Seems to be a problem over at Flickr. I'll see about reuploading them and reposting them.

At the moment I mostly do decorative carvings for people, or maybe make some wallets and sheaths. That's what's popular and what I have space for. When I had a larger workshop I'd also make quivers or bags and such. The black smith stuff was always really light hobby things like knives or nails to show off when I was working at a Living Historical site.

I'll see if I can find things to post!

Amazing pictures Padre!
 :eusa_clap:

And good job in laying out the differences between two very different hobbies.

In case it wasn't clear, I am well aware of those differences - but the hobbies still touch, occasionally. Because the reenactors I know certainly influenced and inspired me. It feels cool to fall in love with the aesthetics of a certain period in history and learning more about it. And I respect the hell out of good reenactors for all the effort they put in! You guys don't cut corners, and that shows! I'd miss the roleplaying though, so it's not for me.  :-D

I don't think it's a dying hobby though - at least that's not the impression I get from looking at the scene from the outside. I constantly see pictures of huge events. Am I wrong?

I think it's very area dependant, and also type dependant. My area is just flush both historical and LARP'ing, but a number of different historical groups have died off. The English Civil War (Canadian Contingent) is gone, same with a number of specialist medieval ones. Now the only real organisations left are the SCA (General Historical re-enactors) and the national LARP'ing. Both have tons of members, while the smaller groups are bleeding members.

Couple of Orks and assorted other baddies, actually.

In the backstory of the event, the opponents were the manifestations of our assorted fears and nightmares, so it was "everything and the kitchen sink attacks, constantly".

Repelling that charge, moments later (perfectly timed to capture the left Ork catching my pollaxe with his chest):

That's looking like a pretty sweet battle! I like the reinforcements on the right just waiting for their moment to pile in.

This is a bit older and was posted in my painting blog, but these are some of the designs I've worked on for people before;

Righty, and now time for something completely different. I mentioned before in some other threads that one of my other hobbies is leatherwork. Rather then start a new thread I figured I'd post some pictures here.

These are what I call panels, or tiles. They're really just practice pieces. Ways to experiment with dyes, or designs or wording. So you'll notice plenty of obvious errors. Try not to focus to much on the fact none of the words line up super well. I do a fair bit of leather work as part of the local reenactors group, and I'm particularly involved in some of the heraldry stuff. (I'm not ONE of the heralds. I just help people out with designs and stuff) So that's why the panels are all a mix of designs and mottoes/quotes/random text. It's all a bit of experimental work to see how stuff turns out.

Anyways, enjoy!

Some close ups on particular ones I enjoyed.

and finally, in the words of Yoda;

**
I tried to dig out some of my actual leather crafting but none of the finished pieces are easy to get to. The unfinished stuff really doesn't look good till it's a bit further along. Usually I'm making stuff like quivers (my most common work), wallets, satchels, knife sheaths (Also very popular) and of course the designs and such on them. I don't do clothing as much, but if I had a nickel for everyone who's wandered up and asked me to make them some kinky stuff (usually for free) I'd be a very rich man indeed. Probably a great deal more popular as well. More interesting weekends to.

Me as a parish constable in Skipton town in the year 1715. One of my many duties is to deal with any soldiers that pass through the parish, and here I am doing so!

They're worried about going off to fight the Jacobites. I'm happy to stay in my parish.

Quite the opposite! It was the parish constable's duty (amongst hundreds of others, all of which I researched!) to see to the victualing and lodging of soldiers passing through or staying in his parish! For example, I could claim 9d. per mile for a cart and four horses I obtained for the soldiers' use.

I will have to so it all again in September.

New sheath for my longsword. I had only told the guy I ordered it from the rough style I wanted, that I wanted him to use red leather, and that I'd like the sigil of our Order on it, and otherwise told him to go nuts. This is what he made:

The sword is a two-handed longsword by Wyvern Crafts, this one, pretty much:

120 cm total length. I don't know how long he took to make the scabbard, but it's all handmade and -sewn, and the sword fits perfectly. I paid about 400 Euros for it, which I consider to be really fair. Dude is amazingly talented and works with metal, leather, wood and stone/bone. Check out his homepage! It's only in German I'm afraid, but he speaks good English as far as I know. And he doesn't have a webstore, just a gallery, since he only works to order:
