Title: Show us ... your first painted mini and your masterpiece
Post by: Warhammer-Weib on February 07, 2012, 08:06:10 AM
Many excellent painters have told me stories about their humble beginnings. However, beginners struggling with the very basic techniques seldom find pictures to show them the huge progress possible in this field.

According to the famous W-E saying 'Pics or didn't happen', one of these beginners is hereby requesting you for and on behalf of all the others to post pictures of your very first painted mini compared to your masterpiece.

No guts, no glory!  :icon_wink:

Well, I can't remember my first, but I will once again do some from amongst my first and they are easily as nightmare inducing:

And I'm still not a great painter, but I have at least improved. Don't think I have a masterpiece, but this is what I can get to most of the time:

I don't have really good pictures of my recent stuff to really show off how much I've improved, but I will post pics none the less. I'll post a few of them to show the difference. I think I've posted this old fig on the forum once before, but I don't mind posting again! I'll post a series from my oldest to my newest stuff.

Here is the very first miniature I painted in about 1990 for my Barbarian I was playing in my freind's AD&D campaign, I think it was still 1st edition at that time. Very basic block painting with no highlights are shading. Some poor color choices, but I was working with Testors' Enamel model paints in the small square glass bottles and my Mom's craft acrylics using the white handled, black bristled Testor's brushes. Man have I come a long way since then. He's a little worse for the wear being a lead miniature that I've had for more than 20 years. Even though I could do significantly better, I refuse to strip and repaint him.

The following were painted from about 1992 through about 1997, the order on these is kinda vague for me. I just know I painted these while I was in the Air Force. They are posted about in the order that I painted them. I was still using mostly craft paints on these, although I had discovered Partha paints and some better brushes by the time I got going on these. I sold all of these and I really wish I hadn't sold the Fizban miniature (the green wizard for those who aren't Dragonlance fans).

I forgot I had this picture. This Orc truck from Gorka Morka I painted in 1998/1999 after I returned to the US from being stationed in Korea.

I painted the Stormtrooper (he's not actually finished in this picture), the Rebel trooper, and the Sullustian Pilot some time around 2001/2002. The red guy and the tan guy are some Command and Conquer toys I was showing that could be used for miniature gaming use with the West End Games Star Wars Miniature Battles game that I was into at the time.

Here's some of my Biel Tan Eldar I painted around the same time as the Star Wars figs. The Dark Reapers being one of the last things painted for them around 2004/2005. The Exarch isn't yet finished in this picture.

All of these last miniatures were painted over the past three years. In order are:

My Warrior Priest.

My VOR Neo-Soviet Cyclops

My most recently completed Pistoliers.

The last Pleasant Surprise I built.

A few more since the previous surprise.

One of my wizards.

The Pleasant Surprise I sent to fbjorn.

Thank you for posting your pictures!

@Siberius: How long did it take you to get there?
Title: Re: Show us ... your first painted mini and your masterpiece
Post by: Siberius on February 07, 2012, 03:21:36 PM
Hehe, longer than it should. But that is due to a few things. Not having someone help me learn meant it was a slow process. Switching to GW paints instead of those toxic humbrol paints. The time it took me should not be taken as any indicator as I've seen people progress far faster. My wife for example got better really fast. Like over the course of a year or two she went from beginner to rather nifty. Probably in part due to help from me and patience when it comes to speed. Also, better variety of techniques. Like her skeletons look amazing, but that is in many parts due to using the new washes to help finish, alongside her attention to detail.

HI,

Not sure about which model I consider my best, but here is my first (about 12 years ago) and my latest (about a week ago).
I'm a very slow painter so even tough it's 12 year it's about 200 minis at most.
Very nice initiative. I didn't even know I still had that old archer laying around. Had to dig deep in some boxes.

I include this picture also to make an important note on something else that can greatly improve your painting. Choice of colour. Back in the day I just used to use the colours that I liked the best, no thought about how they really looked on the mini, I just loved them and splashed them on as much as I could. I think (apart from pulling back from the globbing it on), toning down my colours and indeed, making better choices of what goes well together has been as important a part of my improvement.

My newer witch elves for a little comparison of that very point.

With my fingers trembling on the mouse button, I will show you these secrets from ages past...

Seriously, these are not my first painted models. Those are probably lost somewhere. The gobbos might be my first painted GW models, but I'm not sure. The paint jobs below are about 20 years old in any case.

First out, a 40k squat (!). Please note the undiluted paint on his face, the thinly flocked base, the excess of glue and the choice of colour on the chainsword.

Then, Blood Bowl goblins. I guess they speak for themselves... (Pink  :?)

An example of my present painting that I'm pretty happy with, even if it does not exactly qualify as a masterpiece. Please note that I have been out of the hobby for most of the 20 years between this one and the old ones, so I haven't had that much painting practice in between. If there are any improvements they are probably mostly due to simple things - diluted paints, smoother undercoats, black undercoat for metals etc.  And - most of all - patience! And the development of paint colours - the modern washes f x.

Trying to find a good comparison in my archives:  I think this might be the oldest monster I've done. It wasn't the first thing I painted by any means, but it was early on when all I'd ever learned to do so far was drybrush.

Done around 1998 or so, and pretty rough:

Done in 2010,  since I've refined my freehand skills over the years, and learned to blend, wash, etc:

Pretty happy with that one. :)

Yikes - no one posted here for a couple of months - but its so much fun comparing old to new! So, I'll find one of my earliest painted Warhammer models tomorrow and get a photo - we're talking '93 or '94 I reckon and I knew only one or two people who were painting. We had minimal access to GW store since it wasn't exactly next door nor White Dwarf - didn't have enough pocket money as a 10 y/o!

So this is one of the first models I painted when I got back into it in 2010 - after losing track of the hobby in 1998 - a long break where I found out about girls, beer, how much better they were than studying and then art school/uni and various jobs thereafter...
EDIT (found a better one from 2010!)(http://artisans-workshop.com/images/WoodElf1/wardancers.jpg)
I'll admit that I spent about three weeks going over and over on them 'til I got it right - or near enough!

About a year later I was taking commissions and was up to this point for my best work:

And probably my best work to date... I haven't even finished and photographed yet
But this'll do for now:

@Lord Bakemono: I find your painting effort at 8 years old better than mine at 14! (then again I did try to paint enamel paint with toothpicks, paperclips and cotton swabs isntead of a brush).

Games system was called Confrontation by a French company called Rackham. Its the "Fils d'Ogmios" ("Son of Ogmios" in English). They went bust early 2000's unfortunately. You can still find their minis kicking around on e-bay and other places, which is where I found him - but be prepared to bid - they're fast becoming hard to find and there's lots of Chinese boot-leggers selling crappy re-casts. Its a real shame they went under because they produced some of the best models ever made  :icon_frown:

I made the base myself though - big chunk of pine bark!

I don't know if I've got any "masterpieces" to show, and I don't have any photos (or know the whereabouts of) my first figure. But here's a photo of what would have been one of the first 10 or so figures I painted. The first two figures came with the boxed Battlesystem game. After that it was a box of Grenadier halflings...

Painted with my father's Testor's enamel paints. Soon after I bought some Polly S acrylics, which was my first big step forward in painting.

Hey, cut it out with the enamels jibe! If we were to take your comment as true, then I have not even taken my first big step in painting after more than 30 years of painting!

Are you trying to fill my head with doubts and fears? To make me wonder whether I have made a big 30+ year mistake? That I have gone so far astray from what is best that I am undone utterly, ruined and lost in my stubborn foolishness.

I refuse, completely, to make that step. I am gonna enamel my way in a contrary fashion until I enter the lonely realm of enamel painters' heaven. It'll be like Valhalla, but with just three blokes getting to share all that food and beer!

Isn't nail polish an enamel paint too? So, technically, you are also going to have women and gay men there too.

Cool. We'll find a use (probably quite different) for each of them. I'll not go into details as with my 'Valhalla-esque' head on it may offend!

Oh, and Emos.

From what I have seen Emus probably a lot of fleshmeat on them, so we can roast them on the spits over the huge central fire and eat them with sauces prepared by the other inhabitants of our increasingly crowded heavenly hall.

Let me amend that by stating that it was a big step forward for me. I just didn't like them and found the acrylics easier to use and easier to clean up. No offense intended to those who prefer them.

Now those people who use oil paints, on the other hand...

Glad I've just seen this thread as it just gave me a reason to look out some old models and photograph them.

These models are from my first stint in the hobby. I first started buying and painting miniatures in about '93 when i was age 8-9. I played 2nd edition 40k (I hear 40k has gone downhill since) from release in '94 to 3rd edition '97. I also played Necromunda and Warhammer Quest. In my eyes this was the golden age of Games Workshop. Sadly I havn't got my very first miniatures anymore (plastic beaky space marines and eldar striking scorpions) But here's some from '94-96 age 10-12:

The oldest painted model I have. '94 age 10

I've worked out these are all '95-'96 age 11-12

Then, after 10 years away from the hobby, in about 2006, after discovering skateboarding, girls, and beer. 2007 My brother and I decided to start Warhammer 7th Edition. This lasted about 1 yearHe chose Ogres and I chose the beautiful army of wood elves (hope an 8th Ed army book comes out and they will get resurrected):

Haha! Great thread. Nice to see all those ancient minis and Goblin Green bases!

Here's some Chaos Warriors. Some of the first minis I ever painted when I was about 10. Good to see I had the depraved Slaaneshii vibe down at an early age. Sorry if your eyes hurt!

Goblin Green bases, textured with sugar! Horrible.

And a couple of minis from last year.

Barbarian Dude from Raining Frogs Garage (and maybe the start of an Albion Army).

And my Giant Slayer, which got a finalist medal in last years Golden Demon, Open Competition. Was very pleased.
