I don't see the point in client kingdoms. They prevent you from using edicts.
Curse you and your ability to stay within the lines.

They help you in wars and are usually likely to be your trade partners.

Allies!

Also you can´t issue that many edicts anyway so having 3 provinces under complete control will be enough until you are larger than an Empire.

only if that kingdom is in a province.  IMHO they make good buffers and trade partners.

taking another shot at playing Macedon.  I conquered all of Macedonia and crushed all but one region of Thrace.  Sparta and Athens are my bitch.  Consolidating my power before finishing up Thrace.  After that I plan to take create then decide whether to cross the Aegean or launch that large and expensive war against Sparta and Athens.

what happens when your empire bar fills up?  Is it like in shogun 2 where all the countries declare war on you?

also I can't stress enough not to use auto fight.  It doesnt take into account the unit types and strengths.  I once was set to loose all but 13% of my troops if I autofight but instead fought on the battle map for 15 minutes (3000 of my troops vs 4000 of theirs) and only lost 86 troops whereas they lost 2500.  It didnt take into effect that I have armored veteran pikemen and hoplites vs naked youths with a sword and shield.

also I notice the pikemen will stay in phalanx even while running (more like a quick march) whereas hoplites break from phalanx and you have to turn it back on.

Games pretty complicated in its own way.  Learning the over map and all the potential functions is going to take a little while.

Reviews are mixed so far (well mixed for a AAA game).  People seem to agree with what is being said here, battles are big mosh pits without much tactical variation.

Which is wrong you can play tactical and sometimes even have to.

Lots of the criticism is .....wrong.

Most of it because the game has changed and people just started playing without understanding this.

First patch Friday, and then weekly. Will clear up stuff hopefully. I had first (annoying) glitch last night. Got 3 units of hastate on the walls of a settlement, and they wouldn’t come down! Wouldn’t even throw their pila. So two glitches sort of. 1) not coming down the wall 2) only throwing pila when charging.
Still a lot of fun. And I’ll get in properly tonight!

A lot of criticism is for the performance. I saw one guy complaining “all these complaints and CA haven’t even acknowledged them, all other companies would have done a patch already”
Guess he’s never tried to play xcom multiplayer, which is still so buggy as being unplayable!

I can say that from what I have seen, it is far less tactical than Medieval Total War II.

Units seem to break and collapse far quicker than in the previous iterations.  It makes it difficult to set up longer term exchanges.

Can you have more than 10 tiles in a stack?  I can only have three generals currently and each can only have one row of soldiers.  Meanwhile, the enemy seems to be able to lug around the full 20 stacks.  I end up needing to bring all three generals to fight against the 3000+ soldiers at sities.

Conquered the rest of Thrace and built up my army.  I find these units break easy because its still early game.  All the buildings, generals, and tech add to morale and fatigue so early game has a small amount, I imagine late game will be longer for it.

After I conquered Thrace I upgraded my men with gold armor, shields, and weapons as well as swapped out older levy pike units for standard pikemen, and my slingers for archers.  Sarissa cavalry for those awesome fast rear charges or to run down skirmishers.

I built 3 additional armies (5 pikemen, 2 sarissa cavalry, 1 hoplite, 3 archers, and companion cavalry general for all 5 armies).  I left one in each provincial capital and took my 3 armies off to Crete to fight Knossos.  Landed there and engaged his army.  It was by far the largest fight I ever had.  Because of unit limitations I was short 500 of my troops.  I ended up have 4 companion cav, 5 sarissa cav, 4 archers, 8 pikemen and 1 hoplite.  Was a huge battle. the frame rate suffered a bit.
Macedon:
Deployed: 4520
Lost: 178
Kills: 4208

Knossos:
Deployed: 4860
Lost: 4211
Kills: 177

Battle duration, 12 minutes and 12 seconds.

A good 3 minutes waiting for my units to get into position once the other half showed up.  Because of the scale of the battle I did use some hammer and anvil tactics but once their spearmen got into contact with my pikemen they were slaughtered.  I am not sure if its because they were all vets, had gold armor, shield, and weapons, or where better units.  Half my sarissa cav flanked his left flank, the other half cirlced around killing skirmishers.  My companion cav crushed his right flank and his reserves.

oddly enough the auto fight would have had me loose all but 20% of my troops.

only now do I see the achievement "A League of Their Own" as Macedon establish Athens, epirus and Sparta as client states...well seeing as I declared war on epirus and wiped them out by turn 3 I missed out on that.  Looks like if you fill up the empire bar a civil war breaks out?

Watching a guy play on legendary, defending a siege froma full stack with only his garrison. They didn’t build siege engine, just ran straight through the burning oil, killed themselves, then ran away. facepalm

Good way to get rid of the enemy head of the family with high gravitas.....make him general of a small army and get him killed in the field.

I generally preferred using the barbarian tribes.  The Gauls were my favorite in RTW1.  I Love the Germanic celts historically, so I like them as well.  In RTW1 they were a tough faction to use though.

The Iceni are supposed to be easy...with the Suebi you have a lot of club over the head to do right from the start ...but you get boni from being at war with everyone around.
