Exactly.  Small squads instead of massed soldiers that somewhat mirrored the table top was bizarre.

It's like they tried to be Warcraft 3 without bases. Boring! I'll correct myself though, RPG elements isn't a substitute for actual gameplay.

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt.  I'm not much of an RTS fan but I managed to finish the campaigns for DoW1 and all the expansions.  DoW2, however, I just couldn't bring myself to play past the first couple of missions.  It just didn't engage me at all.

Thats a great point, in many ways they did the exact same thing in Warcraft 3 and I had a similarly bad opinion of that change.

Thing is, it was 7 years between warcraft 2 and 3.

Right.  I think they figured they needed to evolve the game.  They didn't.

True. But if they didn't, there would be no Dota or Lol.
Which is fine by me - i find them boring as shit, but a lot of people seem to like them.

And i think it worked to a degree to tell a story. They already had their successful pure RTS. No need to make a competitor. They already had their RPG - no need to make a competitor. So they made a blend.

And they built a damn fine engine to go with it.

That engine was originally used in the Company of Heroes, a much better game, I might add.

Lesser well known.

I think it was open, but not sure. CoH had a much better gameplay options and the engine was utilised more fully, than in DoW2. For example the building destruction and occupation was handled muhc better.

Looks like I'll give Mafia 3 a pass. From what I've seen and read, it appears to be a good story with interesting characters bogged down by a limited, repetitive game with terrible tech.

It's pretty disheartening to see that after 14 years and 2 tries they STILL haven't managed to make a worthy sequel to Mafia. Sigh.

Ah well. Civ VI, looks like I'm all yours when you come out.

That's a pity. It looked very nice, and the setting seemed promising.

I'm actually pretty interested in the Stellaris DLC that's coming out the day before the Civ release. A story pack thing that's going to put big monsters and treasure around the map? Sounds like a good reason to keep exploring.

Plus tweaks.
Plus you can move your capital.
Plus more planet types.
Plus cutsie species!

I am getting it.

I'm very much looking forward to the auto explore button, leviathans and new humanoid portraits. I've been playing pretty much humans, space spiders or foxes, it'll be nice to have some change.

Anyone has Offworld Trading Company, I think the idea of the game is nice, but when I see youtube videos I fall to sleep :)

Its on sale on steam, let me know if you have tried it.

I don't have it on steam but I put a lot of hours into the early alpha they had. It can be very fun, especially with a group of people it can get very cut throat. if it's on sale on steam I may finally pick it up.

It can be a pretty quick game or a long game depending on whatever floats your boat. It's nice to be able to play a couple of different ways. Never tried the campaign though.

I have 3 different humans, i have a reptile that looks a bit like the protoss, i just designed space foxes last night for tundra worlds, and i have another mammal type that has wings. I cant seem to connect with play as a muluscoid or fungoid.

Maybe the upcoming DLC's cute Snailiens can bring you over to the molluscoid side!  :icon_mrgreen:

Some minor updates for "Vermintide" have been released, including contracts. This gladens me, as the loot aquistion in this game can be quite a chore. Also a new, frosty DLC has been suggested - a trip to Kislev or a lost Dwarf Hold?

I'm leaning towards it being Kislev for Vermintide, but it would be cool to be in a dwarf hold.
