First contact with an NPC

Gunther left the safety of the Grosseferre, with a small retinue of officers. It was not a glamorous position, but then again, as a minor noble who owed much of his power to his father's wealth 'earn't during the Marienburg war, he couldn't ask for much. He had thought that being the Third highest ranking lordling of the Grosseferre garrison would be the apex of his career. Sadly, he was right. Lord Georg von Urebach had called it a 'carnival', and had sent him to ensure that the army acted according to his wishes. It was, unfortunately, as far from a carnival as you could get. Stretched out across the Grossfurre Region was a wave of rabble. Dozens upon dozens of gnoblars, milling about. Perhaps they numbered in their hundreds, for there were too many to count. They ran here and there, stealing, bartering, drinking, fighting and screaming. None of them could even reach his waste. But they all looked at him with beady little eyes, full of avarice and maliciousness. Worse yet, was that the 'army' was camped near the hills. Around the edges were men. He knew several of them, for they were one and all criminals. There were the colors of the Black Caps, Albrecht's Lads, the Dirty Two Dozen, and perhaps more. Scoundrels, all of them, criminals one and all. He had been told that the ogre's army would need discipline, but he had no idea just what a task that would be.

And in the center of it all was the ogre himself. Bork. Clad in the blue and white of Middenland, it towered over the assembled gnoblars. It held the half-eaten leg of a horse in one of its hands. Even on his horse, Gunther could only look the ogre in the eyes because it was sitting. The horse whined as he forced it to go closer, and his officers started to close around him. The ogre had not yet deigned to look at them, for it was too busy with its meal. Eventually they made their way to the 'general', their steeds stepping on or pushing the crowd of gnoblars out of the way. Soon they all sat before him, surrounded by a circle of greenskins. While the cacophony of screaming was still there, the closest gnoblars had fallen (mostly) quiet. The ogre continued to eat, the sound of breaking bones filling the air. Gunther cleared his throat to get the beast's attention. It didn't work. His fellow officers looked at him with expectation, if not fear. He tried again, louder. Still the ogre continued to eat.

Finally he yelled "Ogre!"

Bork lowered the horse leg, his eyes narrowing. It was hard to tell what, if anything, was going through his eyes. Gunther cleared his throat again, and forced himself to speak. "I am...I am Lord Loehr, and your Lord sent me to ensure your loyalty. Are you still eating? By the gods, you will stop eating when I talk to you."

Bork put down the leg of horse and pushed himself to his feet. "Good, now, as I was saying-" Bork reached back and punched the horse in the head, sending it sprawling to the ground. Gunther managed to free himself, and rolled out of the way of the fallen horse. His fellow officers drew their weapons to come to his aid, but the swarm of gnoblars suddnely surged forward. Crawling up their horses, pulling at their saddle bags. Screaming and clawing. A pistol went off, braining one of the innumerable little beasts. Bork stomped his way to the fallen Lordling, smacked the man's blade out of his hand, and grabbed him. In a voice that sounded like rolling thunder he yelled "GNOBLAR NO TALK!" Forcing the man's head back he bit the lordling in the ear, the ogre way of marking a gnoblar as belonging to him. Gunther screamed as he tried to get away, losing his ear in the process. (WP Test: 51 rolled...failure). Bork swallowed the ear, and a look came across his face. He was hungry. Gunther screamed as he tried to push the ogre away, only to loose his hand in the process. The ogre bit down, and with the sound of bones breaking and sinew being torn, it was ripped clear off. (WP Test, -5% penalty: 20, success). Bork tossed the screaming man to the ground, his chin covered in blood. "DOC!" There was a squeal from somewhere within the horde of gnoblars, and a gnoblar dressed in what was once white ran forward. It had a pair of broken glasses resting on it's bulbous nose and was carrying a leather bag that it had looted from somewhere. "Yah boss?" Bork pointed to the Lordling, whose face had gone white and whom was staring at the stump where his hand once was. "Fix him." There was a cheer, for the gathered gnoblars didn't really know what was happening but they enjoyed a good show. The lordling was dragged away by the horde, much to the chargrin of his compatriots.

And in the hills, the gathered bandits watched. And laughed.

------------

Hours later the officers, minus Gunther, returned to the garrison. Their horses were gone. Their weapons, their armor, their coin and their dignity lost too. One man was even missing his pants, for the gnoblars had overwhelmed them and taken everything. And they made their report...

[OOC: As reference,  von Urebach was upset about the idea of a "talking gnoblar" speaking on his behalf. So he demanded that Bork take the following NPC into his retinue.

[Gunther Loehr - Third highest ranking lordling in the Grosseferre garrison. A very minor noble who owes much of his power to his fathers wealth 'earnt' during the Marienburg war.]

Thankfully, Bork passed his second WP test. Because for each failed test, the man was going to lose a limb with a further -5% WP check. But I suppose all is well that ends well, right? Because of his self control, I hereby award Bork with +5% WP. As you can see, when he does well he will gain advances. If he does poorly, he can take wounds, or even die.]

"Bork." The voice rung through the Ogre's camp like shattering icicles, heralding the arrival of Hilde Scholz. Grafin Scholz was clad all in white, and waves of cold seemed to radiate off of her- to stand too close to her was to risk frostbite on every inch of exposed skin. A score of the irregulars which passed for house troops followed behind her, nervous both of their lady's rage and the crowd of gnoblars that had emerged to greet them. They needn't have worried, though, for when the lead greenskins pushed too close to Hilde they screamed and fell back with black and purple noses and ears and eyes nearly frozen shut.

"Bork. We need to talk. Now."

Bork had been lying on the ground, staring at the clouds. He had his cloud gnoblar next to him, saying what each cloud looked like. It was a dangerous job. Don't mention food and you get a bored and angry ogre. Mention food too much, and get eaten. Hilde came, and there was a commotion. Bork sat up and looked around angrily. Seeing the woman come, he bellowed "TALKIN GNOBLAR!" Grumbit ran up to his master, his hat trailing behind him. "Yah boss?" "Find what she wants." The gnoblar bobbed its head up and down and then took off running.

"Ay! Ay! Ay! Ayayayayay! I..." The gnoblar stopped as it got close to the woman, shivering. "I cold. What you want?"

"Bork. I will speak to Bork, and Bork alone. Not you, gnoblar." Icicles began to form on the greenskin's long nose. "Get Bork, or I will find him myself."

The Gnoblar ran back to the ogre. "She says she no talk to me, she talk to you." Bork grunted. "I don't wanta." With a thud the ogre fell back to the ground, and pointed at a cloud. "That one!" The cloud gnoblar looked up at it.

The gnoblar stuck out its tongue as it thought. "It a Rhinox." Bork nodded sagely. "That one!" as he pointed to another cloud. His talking Gnoblar hurried back to Hilde, holding its hat infront of its chest. "Bork no want to. You talk to me, yes? Me real good at talkin!"

Hilde's followers began to pull their scarfs and hoods and snow glasses tighter around their faces, mindful of the storm that was coming. Sure enough, the wind began to raise and snow flurry around the villager and indeed the whole camp.

The cloud gnoblar found himself rapidly out of a job, and the talking gnoblar was no better as Hilde stalked past him towards the supine Ogre's position.

"Bork! I will speak to you. What have you done, Bork!?"

Bork sat up, looking grumpily at Hilde. The assorted gnoblars were backing away, shivering and glaring at nothing in particular. If Bork felt anything, he gave no sign. "TALKIN GNOBLAR!" "Y-ah boss?" "Tell her that I look at clouds." Grumbit bobbed his head in agreement, before looking at Hilde. "B-b-b-ork says he look at c-clouds." The poor gnoblar had his hat wrapped around him to stay warm. It finished with a sniffle, and started stamping its little feet to stay warm.

The noise that came out of Hilde's throat sounded like lake ice settling, in the moments before some luckless sojourner finds out how deep the water really is. Yet when she spoke, it was oddly calm, even congenial.

"No, Bork. There will be no more clouds until you talk to me. You, not this-" the talking gnoblar, who had once thought his position esteemed indeed, now dearly wished he had remained second assistant loot sorter as Hilde pointed a finger at him and the miserable thing found his heartbeat slowing and his limbs going numb- "-green piece of refuse. Understand?"

The snow was falling more steadily now, the wind had let up but thick fluffy flakes were beginning to stick and pile into future drifts.

Bork was about to reply, when a man ran up. It was the lordling, Gunther. But you would never recognize him. Instead of a hand, he had a puppet. It was sewed onto the stump where the hand used to be. He wore the scraps of his uniform, and on his head was the face of a squig.

"T-thank Ulric! Oh, U-ulric be praissed! My lady, d-did m-my father send you? L-look what they did to m-my hand! My hand!" Tears started to roll down his face, though they immediately froze for such was the power of Hilde's aura. Bork, seeing this, broke into laughter. Laughter that was joined in by the assembled gnoblars, who immediately started imitating their  lord.

"HAHAHAHA! Story gnoblar wear funny hat! You, SIT!" He pointed at Hilde and then patted the ground. "Story gnoblar funny." He grinned at Hilde, with nothing but mirth in his eyes.

"Franz. Otto." Two of the militiamen straightened up from their defensive huddle. "Take care of this man.  Keep him warm, we need him alive." The men hurried over to Gunther, producing a ragged blanket from the depths of someone's pack and slinging it around his shoulders.

"Bork, what did you do?" Hilde remained standing. "This is Lord Urenbach's servant. You can't treat him like that. You can't just eat everyone who annoys you, Bork. You need to apologize to Gunther for eating his hand, and Lord Urenbach for mistreating his servant."

Bork rose to his feet, grabbing his sword in the process. It was large, easily twice the size of the weapons wielded by the Empire's famed greatswords. He held it in one hand, and there was murder in his eyes.

"You know take gnoblar. He given to me, he MINE!" The assembled gnoblars (those not too close to feel the frostbite) started to instinctively go for their weapons. Such as they were. Like a wolf pack, they were waiting for the first to pounce, each one too cowardly to take the step. All it would take was one violent action, and a few hundred cold and hungry gnoblars would descend upon the dozen militiamen. Around the back of the camp, the assorted bandit groups that were present started reaching for their weapons, each one wondering if they could get close enough in time to pick up any loot. Bork glared at them, his knuckles white around the hilt of the sword.

Various blades and guns suddenly made their appearance in the hands of the militiamen, who now drew into a hedgehog behind Hilde- they wouldn't win, but they would kill a lot of gnoblars in the process. In the meantime ice had begun to spontaneously cover the the ground around the Grafin, her breath rose like exhaust from a steam tank, and her eyes had become all but opaque blue-green orbs.

"Gunther is not yours, Bork. He belongs to Lord Urenbach." A ghost of a reflected thought passed over her face. "Lord Urenbach is the Tyrant, Bork. You're just a bruiser. You can't eat the Tyrant's servants or anyone the Tyrant tells you not to. You need to tell the Tyrant you're sorry for eating his servant!"

There was a pause as Bork started thinking. The gnoblars closest to him were familiar with his 'thinking face.' Finally he shrugged his massive shoulders. "Tyrant give be gnoblar, he not bite ear. Gnoblar mine. But I give you gnoblar for shinies." Bork grinned, and the assorted gnoblars began chittering in excitement, each one convinced that their noses were big enough or title important enough to share in the spoils.

"That's not how it works, Bork." Hilde used a remarkably level 'patient' voice, considering she was barely even a woman. "Human's don't mark our gnoblars- servants by biting their ears off. Only Ogres do that. Gunther is Lord Urenbach's servant. You tried to steal his gnoblar, Bork. I know it was a mistake but he's still going to be very angry. You need to come with me and apologize to him."

"I no steal. Bork NO STEAL!" With a furrowed brow, the ogre continued. "Tyrant said he no talk to talkin gnoblar, so he give Bork one. He give Bork unmarked gnoblar." At this, one of the gnoblars, perhaps braver than it had any right to be, pulled on Bork's pants. "Boss? Boss? Bossbossboss? Boss?" Bork looked down at the gnoblar. "She says they no bite gnoblars." Having completely forgotten about Hilde, Bork turned to the gnoblar. "Yeah they do. Everyone marks their gnoblars." The gnoblar stuck its tongue out as it screwed its face up in thought. "Maybees they pee on them? I heard that humans pee on things to mark there territories." Bork nodded at this, before turning back to Hilde, though with less confidence in his voice. "I no smell pee. Don't think that Tyrant peed on his gnoblar."

"No, Bork. Not a talking-gnoblar. He said that he would send Gunther along to watch you. Like..." Her eyes were still unreadable, but a long pause seemed to indicate a frantic search for a proper metaphor from a very limited knowledge of Ogres- "Like when your cow watches you slaughter a kill. But without any breeding afterwards. Gunther's job was to watch what you did and tell you what Lord Urenbach wanted you to do. He's Lord Urenbach's servant, and because he knows this so well Lord Urenbach doesn't need to mark him. Just like I don't need to mark my servants because I know that they'll be faithful. Now you've gone and bitten off his ear without asking, and that's bad."

Bork chewed his lips in thought. The gnoblars were starting to back off, partly out of boredom, but mostly due to the cold. "So...he my story gnoblar then. Good. You leave, I pee on him." At this Gunther let out something close to a whine as he tried to retreat further into the huddle of militiamen.
