I am interested in undercoating my halberdiers with gray spray paint. My thinking is: this will save me from needing to paint a base coat over my usual black undercoat. Does anyone have experience using non GW spray paints to undercoat their minis? A friend told me that in terms of paints, it is ill advised to use non-GW, because non-GW have lower amounts of pigment. I don't really know anything else about it, and am just wondering if the same might be true about spray paint. Any suggestions?

Krylon is cheap and works wonderfully in my experience, but I have only ever used white and black for basecoating. I believe there was a thread about this or one that mentioned this previously. Good luck. :-)

i use Tremclad rust paint flat black. It works very well and it costs about 6-8$ canadian.

I have used yellow for a Nordland army once. It worked very well BUT you really can't judge where you are at till your finished because there is so much colour. This proberbly wouldn't be a problem with grey but finish your first model, don't get half way and plonk him into the simple green bath :)

There are also colored primers by army painter, that work well. Just make sure to watch theri how-to-use video on their website, because the stuff needs a different spraying technique than GW primer.

Thank you for the advice everyone. I went with Krylon gray primer, and so far it looks fantastic. Here are 2 pictures so far, I will update when I finish for reference.

They look great.
I've used Krylon for many years and have been very happy with the results.

I laughed when I first read this today, I had just been at Michael's hobby and craft store. While there I bought a can of Krylon flat white primer for $5.95, after my 40% discount coupon, (they publish a one item coupon in Sunday flier at least once a month) it cost me $3.55. It is a large can. I followed this purchasing trip with a visit to my local game store and gazed upon a GW can of flat white primer, exact same size for $15.00, and wondered why anyone would ever buy it. I now realise that there are many people out there who have not been brought to the light. I shall strive to blow the horn from the highest hill top, and announce to the world, there are choices! and usually the best choice does not have the GW trademark on it. I am not refering to figures, but it is getting to that point also, but more to the things like paint, glue, tools, flock, static grass, brushes, etc. etc. etc. Be brave my fellow painters ask the elders for the brands and deals that they use, save your money for figures, not supplies. Happy panting and gaming await, remember more is better. steveb

Well, this primer certainly looks very good. I shall definitely try to get it. For my projects I use besides GW white and nonGW black and grey also the GWspray gun, which is very usefull, because youcan prime in any colour you wish and so it saves you a lot of time. I intend to spray one unit now with yelllow spray to make it into a nordland scheme, so I'm deciding on the right tone of yellow.
@steveb: I believe there should be a specific thread dedicated to nonGW products, right?
If not than I will create such a thread.
.........just kidding 023

Just be sure if you are intending the undercoat to show that, unlike me, you pay attention and buy the non-silk/gloss finish version.

I've used primer for cars for over 10 years now, with no ill results.

Actually, I think a thread with a collection of GW products, and then links to their alternatives would be a great/useful idea. Or even as a sticky thread or a workshop article.
For whatever my curmudgeon-y opinion is worth.
