Pro-Painted? Yeah Right
« on: August 19, 2008, 06:38:05 AM »
Okay, so I know you guys have seen this hundreds of time in the past, but check this out.  I was checking out some Empire figures on eBay and came across this large Empire army, of all oop figures.  Here is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/WARHAMMER-FANTASY-EMPIRE-ARMIES-PRO-PAINTED-3000-PT_W0QQitemZ220268511949QQihZ012QQcategoryZ44129QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Check out these few lines they have in the auction:

Quote
THE NUMBER OF PROFESSIONALLY PAINTED PIECES ARE 171
WHICH ARE SHOWN IN THE FIRST 19 PICTURES.
ALL HAVE BEEN PAINTED TO A VERY HIGH STANDARD.
THE SHADING OF MANY COLORS MAKES THE GROUP OUTSTANDING.

The only thing outstanding about this auction is the amount of OOP figures offered.

Sorry, I just came across this, and thought, wtf.   :eusa_wall:

Edit: Ok so I noticed the seller is a whole seller who lists just random stuff, possibly from other people, explaining the horrible description.  But still, come on.

Oh yeah totally there's heaps of those ridiculous sellers that think they're good. I don't care if people who aren't good or best at painting says that there's no such thing as 'great paintjob' but when they start selling stuff like that, clearly it's not professionally painted.

I think people who know the hobby will for sure know that this guy is an idiot, and I'm sure people who are new to the hobby will think that it's not that great (this is actually bad for the hobby; they think that this is professional painting for miniature hobby!). On the other hand there might be few poor suckers who fall into such traps and bid high...

You are totally wrong here.

They do not think they are good painters, they know that there are suckers out there who think they are.

If those are Pro painted than shadowlord must be a painting god! The only things I wanted were the UNpainted spearmen.  But after reading your comments I was expecting the painting to be worse.

I thought everyone knew that 'pro-painted' was ebay code for 'badly painted.' Good painters don't use that term.

You can be a pro painter and still suck.  Expectations are that pro painted means Steve Dean or Kev Dalimore quality, where as the reality is you pay for what you get for.

Many mainstream pro painters would turn out product like that if that was all the client was prepared to pay for despite the fact that they are capable of painting much better.
Without so much as a damn your eyes for the inconvenience

on ebay "pro-painted" means the mini is completely covered with at least two different paints, nothing more.
The really professionally painted figuers normally have only a description "mini xy" in the title and good picture that shows the quality paintjob.
Just another imperial minotaur.

Hey, I did the best I could you jerks!

;)

Seriously though, I don't think that is all that bad a paint job.  Better than alot of my Empire models, who suffered through me learning how to paint back in 2000 - 2002...

Im looking at one of the first models i ever painted right now, and man it looks ugly as hell.
I don't even understand why i let it be with the rest of my not-as-ugly Talabheim guys (with rest i mean about 10 Knights and 2 or 3 infantry blocks plus 2 great cannons)
Hopefully i'll get time to repaint them into Altdorf dudes

They're not THAT bad IMHO. I'd LOVE to buy them, it has some fantastic old models, like the steam tank, the outriders, the war wagon crew and those spearmen Otaku mentioned. They're metal, so they're easy to strip.

Generally, but often you are left with a few that don't sell and they sort of become the dregs, farmed out in some crap lot.

Soth:  My first ever unit was Sword Masters.  So ugly... SO UGLY!  Acrylic paint, caked on, filling all those details.  Shitty Walmart brushed, battered by the paper cup as I swished and jammed their tender britles to the bottom to remove the excess paint.  The humanity!  It was inelven!

That guy is sitting on a gold mine of minis.  Though I agree with Philly that there might be some that may not get sold, it probably wouldn't be many, as I don't see that much that is newer than 5th edition in his lot.

offroadfury:  That would be my criteria :D

Soth:  That's bad, but my Sword master was worse.  Didn't even have shading and it was a better model to begin with... :(

Wissenlander:  I still don't understand the attraction of those pre-6th edition models.  They are rather hideous to IMO.
