Ghost Archipelago - Frostgrave II
« on: September 13, 2017, 10:15:39 AM »
The new game and setting based on Frostgrave is up on Northstar.

I've seen some of the previews and it seems 'familiar' because of Frostgrave, but with a new twist of setting and personnel.

Hopefully the author has put in what the learned from Frostgrave to make it better from the start.

I like the idea of the setting.
Not sure about the need to replace wizards though.

I think the change of emphasis onto a different type of main character will be refreshing (though I haven't played enough FG to get bored yet) and stop it just being Frostgrave-on-holiday :)

But to be honest, I just welcome the excuse to paint dinosaurs and pirates and muck around with tropical basing effects, for a nice change from snowy ruins. I haven't put a green plant on a base in years, it seems! :eusa_clap:

I'm on board with the change just to try something new. Besides, who doesn't like pirates?

I got me some pirates!  And some ships, too!

So looking over the metal offerings this time, is it just me or are they not as good as the ones for regular Frostgrave?  I mean I think in part I might not enjoy the aesthetic as much, but I do think the plastic kit looks real good.

You need only small boats. Ships are just youre base and have no use in the game.

I bought the book for a friend yesterday. Did some reading in it just because I had the chance.

Not sure about the need to replace wizards though.

No wizards, the leaders are called heritors and wardens. Captain of a ship or expedition leader you might call them. Seems they are less strong then the wizard apprentice combo from coregame frostgrave.

The crewmen are also weaker then FG core. In frostgrave you can use 8 specialists in the game. In ghost archipelago you can take 4 specialists the rest is standard (thugs) crew who are customizable. If you lose thugs/crew you can replace them normally from the cree of your ship(base). If you loose a specialist it will take a trip to the mainland ( where are markets etc) to replace the specialist. You can continue with a normal 8 henchmen crew but instead of 4 specialists and 4 thugs/crew you play with the remaining specialists and standard crew. For example 3 specialists and 5 thugs/crew.

I got my figures on Saturday, but only got round to opening the box today and having a good look.
Comparing them to the Frostgrave ones, I feel they are at the same standard, but with 34 new metal sculpts there are bound to be some really nice ones, and some shall we say 'blander' ones - mind you I felt that about some of the Frostgave ones.
I am sure we all have different views of what we personally like.
I do agree about the plastic Crew sprues though.

I'm not that into pirates, hence why I'm not that interested in this game.

As usual, I got to assemble my gaming buddy's new miniatures for Ghost Archilpelago, so I thought I'd share them with you...

Please excuse the scale-eton, I didn't have an Empire model to hand to show size with...

This is the biggest model, comes with a choice of heads. I call this one Rory ;) I upgraded him to a 60mm base as he looked silly teetering on the 40mm my pal had provided.

Sail-backed dino thingy (I should look up the names maybe?)

Pteranadon lizard bird

Terrifying chicken-raptors

Giant vampire bats

To be honest, I'm not very excited about the models. The head variant on the big guy is a nice touch, but will you actually need two in a game, I wonder? The sculpts are okay, but there's nothing very original here, nothing that'd make you want to use these rather than "unofficial" dinosaur miniatures or toys, really.

The casting on the resin parts is a bit average to be honest, especially as these are from new moulds, but as you may know I'm not a fan of resin from most manufacturers. The metal parts are much nicer.

I like that figure, although not sure I'd find a purpose for it in my collection.  Good idea on using a 60mm base!

It's a dimetrodon.  It was actually a creature before the age of dinosaurs and not believed to be one.  Instead it is said to be more closely related to mammals than reptiles.  Not really thrilled with the looks of this model nor any of the others, although I do like your skeleton.

Glad you like the old GW skelly :)

Just to clarify, I know what "dinosaurs" the models are based on, I meant that I don't know what they are called in the game...

Archipelago crewmen. Painted them up as cannonfodder on my fleet.
The bases are 20mm round, the ones Blood and Plunder use.

Before the dip

and after. not brilliant but enough to show a little more detail.

Really nice! Are these frostfrave miniatures? They look as good as the militia ones.

They are pretty nice looking models that's for sure.

I'm trying to drum up local support for a ghost archipelago campaign but I think there's to much momentum for frostgrave itself still. not that I'm complaining, but who doesn't love some pirates?

I think Ghost Archipelago would play well on Von Kurst's "Pyrates" tables for Mordheim.

It's scenery that I am looking at. I have a 4' square board with one surface painted blue, so I can overlay hills and such as islands, and add dock areas.

Scenery would be important to find some good stuff. Maybe an island or tropical jungle might be a bit easier to make. My local club has a fair bit of jungle scenery from a Lustria campaign they ran years ago. What I'd really like to do is have some pirate games in more of a port setting. dockyards, piers, warehouse. Battle it out over Port Royal kind of thing.

Von Kursts board is fantastic for it I think.

Thank you.

@Herenius--those crew are perfect for Mordheim pirates, too. :::cheers:::
