Hello there! My name is Martin and I used to run some threads about my Empire (Averland) army and other stuff to. It was like eons ago - times when I was happy, handsome, rich etc....you know what I mean. Few years ago I painted few models for my friend for some fee. Later, don´t ask my why, more of my friends wanted me to paint stuff for them - usually warbands for Mordheim, Malifaux, Warmachine,...
It had become sort of my habit and luckily, thanks to constant campaigns, there is still a demand. And I hope that over the time, I have got better. I don´t want to say that I am somehow amazingly good - I paint in quality according to request, usually models must look good on the field, not to be for display or competition.
A reason why I am doing this is, because I still want to improve. That Is why I would love to hear anything from you, not only constructive comments, but harsh criticism as well.
*I apologize to people who like GW, I mostly paint models chosen by my customers, witch usually came from different manufacturers....

You were happy handsome, rich - and then you started buying and painting GW models....
Excellent job you have done there. The pictures are not crappy either: the shadows add atmosphere.

Your work is very good, I would hesitate to offer any criticism because there is little reason. You asked for constructive comments so I decided to voice one observation. You are trying too hard. The very first thing I saw in this thread was that very excellent banner, beautifully colored and highlighted. Then I saw you figures and they are very nice, but I wished that you had used the highlighting a little more conservatively as you did in the lion banner, in the banner the highlighting enhanced to color field, it seemed to me, and I may be wrong, but in the figures the highlighting became the color field and tended to homogenize the overall scheme instead of enhancing it. I think highlighting a little more judiciously applied as in the banner would improve the effect overall. that said the figures are very nice and I am sure anyone would be happy with them, I know I would be, thank you for sharing, with respect steveb

To your observation steveb, I might know what you think! I sometimes wonder, why a nice model looks a bit dull. In my case it sometimes might be both - first case when a model is overhighlighted, different option, when using just too much layers, leaving no space for contrast, what ends up with model colours to blend in...

I think it's not so much the highlighting as the colour scheme @first pics you posted commented by steveb. If you had, for example, used more red instead of yellow, there would have been much more contrast, even with 'Dwarf Flesh' (how is that called now by GW?) as your last highlight.
Good work on the Nuln guys. :::cheers::: I'd add wood grain to the spear handles though, and find the transition between your last grey highlight and the black parts could be smoother.

About the diversity of colours - I often sadly find myself sometimes to lazy to use more colours - especially when painting a model with a lot o of stuff on it (clothes, armour, ornaments, weapons,...) I tend to use one colour for everything or at least not just for one thing....It is maybe just me, but someone might feel the same - undeniable desire to just finish the model and move to something else...
To change a subject - adding something else (I have plenty more in my sleeves) - Ostland warband!

During winter holidays I had some time to paint agian, this time even for myself...
so here goes my STank. During dozen or so years I play and collect warhammer, this was the first time I have got one and painted it. And I have to say - it was not easy, It was long and sometimes even little annoying. I´m gonna stick to "normal" humanoid minis...
but I still think it looks somehow nice...

yes I agree with GamesPoet, the tank and wizard are very nice. I encourage you to obtain a plastic tank kit and build it. The one you did was the old all metal kits, which undoubtedly was one of the worst things to put together that GW ever made, however you did an excellent job. steveb

Your painting style really sets these apart from most Skaven, great job! Really nice choice of colour and crisp extreme highlighting!
I have to say I can't stop seeing the Grey Seer's watermelon now that you've mentioned it!

Really nice painting overall.
Often the Skaven are an excuse to paint with dull colours and washes in a haphazard manner. These are different. Good colours and highlights do miracles. Inspiration.

It turned out good for you. :-D I don't use washes either, although in my case it is because I use enamel paints, and besides, my cartoon style doesn't suit washes. Your figures are inspirational. You approach them as individual pieces of art, whereas I just churn them out, units at a time. I think I might start concentrating on individual figures for a while.

I have checked your work Padre and I have to say something very similar as you. I feel something more than painting, very strong story after every model (thanks to your amazing campain logs btw!). I guess that every painter sooner or later starts to ignore his work or hate it...:D

The Assassin's blades secrete a deadly, warpstone-based poison, since the blades themselves are made of this stuff. That's why they're called the "Weeping Blades". ;)
Anyway, I love the rats. Especially the Assassin. I always had a soft spot for Clan Eshin. :happy:

But if they made blades out of warpstone, shouldn't the entire thing not be green and not just metallic? Because isn't warpstone stone? Or is it an alloy?! Questions questions!

It's solid Chaos. So it can be metal or a stone. Plus I think that Skaven mix iron with warpstone to create these blades.

Even the Lexicanum is unclear on this:
In its solid, unrefined form, warpstone seems to swallow all light around it, creating a small patch of darkness around it. It also radiates a deadly and corrupting energy; creatures suffering prolonged exposure eventually die or become warped by mutation, although this may not affect the Skaven, as many of them wield weapons and talismans containing unrefined warpstone with no obvious dangerous and corrupting effects (although it may explain their backstabbing and egotistical nature).

Hello again! Getting a little pause between two bigger commisions...
I would like to ask you guys - either those of you who do paint minatures for money, or even those who paint only for themselves - what dou you think is the proper fee, lets say for one hour of paintwork? I´m not talking about some insane stuff you can see sometimes, but about models in tabletop quality or so. Thanks for your opinions!

by the hour is not a good way to charge, myself and my friends used to charge 3x the cost of the figure, but at current costs that is not realistic either.
There are so many factors that affect cost, complexity of the figure, number of colors being used, has the figure already been prepped (mold lines etc) and primed?, has it been assembled and mounted on a base? is it something you want to paint. Is there a time frame requirement? Is it going to be basic tabletop, somewhat higher level, or very display quality? How badly does the owner want it? I personally for a long time requested 3 of each figure (3 complete units) when I got done the owner got to pick the figures he liked the best and we were both happy. I hope this helps. steveb

That first wizard is very Discworldly – what range is he from?
I’ve only really done commission work for people I know and it’s usually been a figure that I wanted to paint, even if I didn’t want to own, so I normally asked for twice the value (no one pays full GW prices) of a metal infantry/cavalry figure or equivalent if plastic.
I think you need to agree a set price rather than by the hour. If you know one figure will take more or less time than usually better the customer knows in advance than trying to explain why you’re charging twice as much for one infantry compared with another.
From comments from those I’ve known who have tried to do it as a business I don’t think I could be bothered with the hassle they have had. Most of their customer’s idea of an average tabletop standard ranged from a high tabletop to Golden Demon with a lot of aggravation to resolve the issue.
Largest thing I’ve painted was a plastic dragon - for twice its value – I built, converted, painted, and kept all unused parts – but it was something I wanted to do. If I didn’t want to paint it and it was just a job I think I’d lose heart and give up – unless I could join the heavy metal team.

This wizard is from rackham minis range (http://s914.photobucket.com/user/RackhamMiniatures/media/Lions%20of%20Alahan/MigailtheSelenite.jpg.html). I really like lot of these models, they somehow differ from most of another miniatures.
About the price - charging 3 times the price of the model - really never thought about it. I´ll definitely try to count the money I would have gotten in this case :D
I understand that it is differnet to paint, than to get rid of mould lines or making the base. But I really meant pure time spent by painting actual model and in this case, I can´t really try harder if a paint a nice and more herolike model, than painting rank and file model. That is why, I guess, only counting the time really works for me - I´m doing it since I started to work on commisions, witch is like 4 years or so.
I´m from Czech Republic - wages and prices in general are a bit lower, than in another countries (Western Europe) - so you will be probably surprised, if I tell you, that i charge 100 czech crowns for hour - witch is like 4,17 US Dollar. I know it might look a little, but I´ll charge more if I get any better and It still really amuses me...

right now I think you are at a very high/good level of skill, to the point that only more practice; will produce greater results in skill. I am sure that you have already found that it is a process of discovery and that what works for one painter may not do for another.
But since you asked, I think that you could work on source lighting/mood lighting, but that is usually more for diorama work. you could/should include some object or figure on the base to interact with the figure, in sense to help create a story and involve the creative (naarative) skills of the viewer. Also large flat areas, or open areas, are spaces where you can add free hand designs, or symbols i.e. tatoos, scars, symbols, etc. also watch the eyes, the pupil is not always dead center, you can vary the placement of the pupil to create the effect that he is staring at something you cant see, pupil placement in upper half of eye can indicate semi conciousness, or drunkeness-lower half placement can indicate he looking down- in center with white all around can indicate surprise, eyebrows can also be used to reinforce or indicate emotion. once you start looking for these features you will see them everywhere. I hope that some of this helps. keep on sharing your good work. steveb

Thanks for your comments guys, at first, I was not sure about the concept, that was given to me, but at the and they really look more like a proper unit, more empirelike :happy: classic french (and also Czech) tri colour is a nice contrast, and works very well for them I'd say...
I'm sorry that I couldn't spend a bit more time on them, but we agreed on a certain price and time (around 3 hours on each rider, including horse). It seems to be plenty, but after spending 18 hours on horses only, I've realized that I'm in deep trouble...

Cool idea with the skin tone. Usually the Daemonettes have a pinkish color, but here you've added a touch of, I don't know, humanity? For some reason it makes this daemon much more disturbing.

@Griffonclaw - This might be a bit of a problem - I tend to mix colours very wildly, but I'll try...
fur - starting with circa 50:50 mix of Black and Rhinox hide, then starting to replace black with Balor Brown, not reaching it completely but adding a bit of Ushabti bone at the end
"socks" on the legs - begining same as for fur, instead of Balor Brown starting to add Ushabti Bone later, at the and a bit of White
tail and mane - start is again same as for fur, than starting to add 50:50 mix of Balor Brown and Blazing orange to Rhinox Hide, finishing with a more and more white

He is gonna be a part of Space Wolves army (a bit alternate colour scheme) I'm painting for one gentleman. More models should come, all from primaris range (intercessors, interceptors, hellblasters, repulsor tanks, HQs)...

I actually have got a lot of criticism saying, they are too much "pastel-colour" looking. As I have said - I like them and my customer too...
Anyway - here is something different. A while ago I have decided to paint some of my old state troops (I have about 40 of them just sprayed catching dust in the attic). I am genuinely bored of painting everything in Averland scheme, so I went a bit wild, and decidet to make mixed regiment to paint every province possible...

I haven't really thought about the idea of using them in Mordheim clash for example. I don't see it as a problem having a province specific warband ruleswise but consisting of different grizzled soldiers from all across the Empire. Gonna have to try that :happy:
@ Rogers Kul - For some reason I don't seem to pay to much attention to the base (at least for now). I have based all these guys with this gritty gravel. I might do something with that after more of them are painted...

For an hour of paintwork I charge 120 czech crowns, which is approximately 4,2 pounds/ 5,5 dollars. I was also recently commission with more than 60 40K orcs to be painted in 40 hours, but they didn't look that nice...

That second attempt at a sword was much better IMO. Those lightnings looked like veins. Still, they'd look great on some Chaos model. :-P

That sounds like a very generous hourly rate. Would you be able to do two or even three models per hour, if using quick and "good enough" techniques? Just to show an example of my own:

This guy was made the same way I'm doing all my state troops: Flat colours for everything first. Wash everything in black except for skin and facial hair, which is washed in flesh wash. Leave everything else as is, but re-highlight the cloth and the skin with the same colour that was originally used.
It's nothing fancy, but satisfactory for my purposes. I probably wouldn't commission anyone to paint me Empire, I'm rather thinking about another, new army all in one go, but this should showcase the quality standard I'm looking for.

Seems easy, but I' d say it really depends on the model/s. If you have uniformed guys like empire, simple coloured outfits like for example night goblins, then why not...

Way back on the pistolier horse, perhaps making the saddle and the horses flesh more different might be good. At the same time, it is a very good standard of overall painting for that horse, and I like it! :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

True, although I looked at that as well, and still sensed the same. No big deal. I tend to be overly critical of my own painting, and sometimes I just need to stop and move on to the next piece.

I'm not 100% sure about the scheme - maybe the colours (red especially) should be more subtle? Shouln't I keep the bow in more natural brown colour - this reminds me old times, where every wooden piece of weaponery was bright red or yellow :icon_biggrin:

The red bow works with the hood. If the receiver likes it, go for it.
I like the dryad looking natural as it does. And perhaps the brown leaves are an autumn groin covering.

My guidance for these were Autumn colours (red, orange, yellow, brown, grey) and though looking a little colder, like late autumn, I quite love them. I never considered waywatchers to look like that, and I love them including the red bow and hood. I am curious to see what some of the other dryads look like with spites and more leaves on them, but so far I really like the choice made for the colours...

love the stuff, especially the all natural, the red is fine it catches the eye and then the eye really observes the rest. just a little possible justification for the red in the wooden items, you have seen or heard tell of red barns, common in the Midwest and other regions, the reason was not aesthetics, it was because the people mixed iron oxide in their medium, as it oxidized it turned red, as in rust this solution that permeated the wood prevents mold and fungus from taking root in the wood and growing, maybe you could call it a little bit of farmers alchemy...... much like soldiers who blackened their plate armor to prevent rust....I have heard it was a combination of heat and urine, not sure do not intend to replicate either,,,,,,, steveb

My favourites on this page are the Space Marines!
Those modern direwolves are a bit meh sculpts, I think. Like modern GW, they are meant to paint easily, but somehow I feel they lack the kind of detail that would actually make that happen. Instead a lot of rather smooth surface, with no hair or scars or the like. Do you plan to go into detail, to make the muscles visible, and to give more hues to the skin? It's hard work, but helps somewhat.

I like it, but my main challenge is I already have 100 skeletons plus 20 cavalry painted with their bones from brown up to bleached bone, not white. So unsure how that would contrast to the flesh colour you have painted which I really like. My guess is it wouldn’t look great...
Regarding the muscles and hair, I think they look great. I like the flesh too, I’m just not sure / want to avoid having to repaint all my miniatures...

I think it might be even easier than the original flesh...I hope this scheme would work for the big one as well (it should be accompanied by flesh and bones, same as in case of dire wolves) - official GW scheme is different though...I'm kinda out of ideas and I'll welcome any suggestion.

Yeah the GW one I think has hair and fur black on it? Doesn’t need to be though. It could be any old big nasty that died and got resurrected. I dont have any major theme for my undead other than black and red (pretty standard) so I reckon if you use the same palette as the dire wolves and make up whatever else it should look great.

I hope they look similar to the firs one (he is actually somewhere in the unit, so I guess they do). I have done most of the "rough" work on the main surfaces (mane, flesh, meat, bones). Now it is time to some touch up...
1) I was thinking about one more highlight on the bones with 50:50 Skull White: Bleached Bone - to add some more contrast between bones and flash. Or maybe darkening the flash a bit with some wash?
2) Separiting claws from the bones somehow (a bit different shade or colour)?
3) Working on the mane, mostly fixing some screw-ups, maybe a bit more highlight...
4) Working on the details such as hanging skulls, pieces of wood and EYES of cours - what about some different colour than red for the eyes?

They look really good! I am definitely pleased with that flesh colour.
Regarding your questions:
1 - yeah go for it. 50:50 to lighten I think will make the bones pop more, and I think it should be fine.
2 - you can if you like. I don’t much mind either way.
3 - I think that grey is pretty good for my purposes, but if you want to!
4 - Eyes I agree, another colour would be best. I haven’t committed to anything yet, so I am open to almost anything. Orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Any colour you were leaning towards?
Regarding the big one, I was meaning the really big one. Regarding the half carrion / half dire wolf I hope I at least converted it half decently that you can work with. Same with the Tree Kin. I have been thinking my conversions may not be up to your paintjobs standard, and I am sorry.

I've actually already started working on the biggest one. Trying to keep the scheme same as on dire wolves. Very WIP, I have just finished drybrushing big surfaces, now moving to the highlights. Might have to go back on the pink higlights on meat, because it might be to much. But probably after the flash is done to see the whole contrast...

I love the wing with the bone contrast. Looks really good. I agree, I think the pink highlight might be a bit too pink. But I’m loving the direction you are going with it.
Thanks for the complement. I hadn’t really seen one before, and thought I would give it a go. Hopefully the greenstuff bits where they connect look decently enough.
2 of the Treekin I am happy with, 1 not so much. Might make sense for me to add some lichen when I get it back from you. Maybe keep that in mind when painting them? Depends on if the paintjob can save my poor conversion.

It seems I have encountered a first (was it really first or am I just lying to myself?) problem. I have tried to finish a 5-man batch of dryads and I haven't ended with the quite same result... :eusa_wall:

It depends on your preference - if you prefer all of these models to look completely the same or you don't mind having for example - 4 slightly different kinds of trees in 20 models strong unit. We can talk more in PM...

Thank you for your kindness, but I would say there are still at least a two things that separate me from being a professional..
1) I still make a whole lot of mistakes, I should learn to work more efficient.
Although I have considerably more customers and commissions, that in previous years, I'd still need way more to consider this as a profession :blush:

Dryad unit looks great.
Love the peachy coloured leaves, and the multi-coloured spites. Can’t tell where the tester is amongst the rest either!

Thanks guys! For "gold" I went from rhinox hide (maybe even with some black) , thru averland sunset, sunburst yellow and finished with almost pure ceramite white. For silver I have used mechanicus standart grey, administratum grey and agin almost pure white. Cant really remember every layer though... :Ohmy:
I'm really looking forward to painting Karl Franz, Marius Leitdorf, Kurt Helborg and couple more classic heroes of the empire from @Warlord, but I'm waiting for more detailed informations about the scheme :-P

Just let me know about the stuff that shouldn't be made according to classic GW scheme they have on their webstore. And maybe add some more info about the older models like Elector Counts or Grand master, since they might had different paintjobs every on every edition. Especially freehand on their barding was highly detailed every time, so just let me know about that :-)

Marius looks great. Really good.
The only feedback I have on the old school characters, is I need the bases old school Goblin Green too. I love the rocks, and the effort younput in, but I need them to match! Sorry!
Also, the Knights Panther GM has a very distinct look I am keen to see - sent you a PM about it.
The Blazing Sun GM looks like my very old paintjob has ruined the detail on the model! I am so sorry! I know you will make it better, but I’m sorry I ruined the canvas that you had to start on!
The horse colouring on both of those models is fantastic though!

I don't have many of that edition elves, but seeing the good work he has done, I need to figure out what else I can send him.

Thank you Xathrodox86, thank you Warlord! I have actually never painted wood elves (or havn't been too much interested in them :D) before, so I don't really have anything to compare them to :blush: It still feels like I could paint a little something here and there, but that might be just me. I'll try to make some more detailed pictures to see...
They were 18 hours in total, so two hours a piece. I'll send you updated document regarding time schledules on different minis. Lot of them is still WIP so I hope to come up with something finished soon :smile2:

@ Warlord - I have tried to strip some of the paint of this grand master and start all over agian. But I'm not completely sure about the golden armor. I didn't want to put on just a classic shiny gold colour, and went a bit more to the old and bit rusty one. What do you think?

I quite like the Blazing Sun GM. Definitely a unique and skillful way to paint him, and I do like him. Probably look great in a unit with the others? Basing for the Blazing Sun knights is fine to be like that I think. However the other 5th ed models I would like Goblin Green basing if its ok...

I'd be glad fore some feedback on chariot - I have done its base and wheels in woodgrain, but the rest wouldn't look good IMHO in woodgrain. But now it seems that these two styles don't match...any help? :-P

Black suns and yellow suns sound nice too. Should you put some more embellishments on the horse barding? Maybe just because its the GM? Not a lot, but a little?
Not sure what to make of Ludwig because its WIP. Perhaps a darker blue barding to contrast more with the grey of the horse?
Banner looks nice.
The chariot - I have no idea. Maybe we open this one up to the forum to assist?

Thanks for the feedback as always Artobans Ghost! I'd like to hear some constructive critiqu, if possible. Not only regarding the paintjob itself, but maybe choice of colour, because that is what I struggle with mostly... :-)
Some work done on Hurricanum/ Luminark. I went with white instead of black, to better suit both Heaven/ Light schools on Magic. I feel like i could make the chassis and wheels look like woodgrain painted over with white, but I'd love to hear some feedback on overall look. The upper parts - hurricanum/luminark "device" are still early WIP. Also not sure if I should keep the barding on horses clean, or add some insignia?
It is not glued together yet, hence some of the parts are a little wobly. Thanks for help and feedback in advance! :smile2:

The blazing sun GM looks great. Can’t wait to see a whole unit like that!
Regarding the wizard wagon, the white looks good. I think your suggestion about white wheels / chassis is a good one - i think without that the wheels are a bit too much extra colour.
The rest looks good, including the barding. I don’t think it needs any insignias at this stage. Candles and internal details look good too!
Ludwig looks fantastic. Very very nice!

Thanks! Oh - I'm not even which colours I have used. Might have been some mix of enchanted blue a and the fang for the middle part and probably gretchin green with some blue for the outer parts. Then I kinda drybrushed both parts togehter to get sorta blend. And than hand picked some highlights. :Ohmy:

Looks great, it's postings like this that keep me motivation to paint. On the subject of dwarf gunlines or static dwarves...I play dwarves and it usually confused new opponents when I used a mobile army. Apparently being involved in more than half of the game sequences is still foreign to most dwarf player.

Well, I know that it might be sorta hard to play offensive dwarfs, If I'd play them, I'd dug myself in the corner of the battlefield and never go even a feet forward :-P But playing empire against dwarf, with worse shooters and artilery, no ambushers and flyers, not too many chances in magic, there is only way to go left....march forward! ::heretic::
But don't get me wrong - I love playing against dwarfs. Only it gets a bit repetive after a while :icon_biggrin:

Zombicide models seem to be even taller than human models in Warhamer (I tried to put them next to imperial guard model). But they have more realistic proportions and they are more slender...I was a bit disappointed by the level of detail, I expected a bit more from CMoN...

Only feedback would be maybe another colour on Alarielle’s staff jewel... I think Green makes it too busy? Maybe a dark red type colour instead? Or orange? Or yellow?

Blazing sun are great. Not over the top, nice black and yellow contrasting. Pretty happy with them! I think I have their banner at home, so will be using that when I get them back!

I think the panther cloak is well painted, but looks a bit messy from a little distance. Camera & light may do a trick here. Otherwise, you could consider deepening the shadowed parts and maybe highlighting the more visible parts.

@Zygmund - not sure about the cloak - the messy part is actually suposed to be a "panther pattern" - little black circles and shapes on the fur. I have tried to take a second look at that, but I haven't probably helped a lot...

I think I like the flying Dire Wolf. A bit unsure about the feather colour. Its maybe too light - would darker feathers look better? Not sure - what do others think? I love the way you painted the column. I don’t know why but when I paint stonework I always feel unsatisfied.

The Empire characters are really nice. Ludwig with the classic red and blue horse is my favourite, although the highlights of the new Emperor make him pop out. You could balance the red and blue pattern of Ludwig's horse by adding more red on the hind part. Like on the crest (now yellow/golden), or on the edge of the skirt.
The Alarielle model rouses feelings... but the paintjob with the well-controlled blending is superb. :)

I think it's the seam between two pieces glued together. Rigorous filing fixed it for me. If the seam still shows, plastic glue, other cement or green stuff is needed, and another round of filing. Yes, that's some extra work, but not hard at all. Although without a heavy duty file it becomes super hard.
It could also be possible to camouflage the seam with painting, but I prefer 3d solutions on 3d figures. :)
Just my opinion. If it's yours, Warlord, it's yours to approve! :smile2:

For lines like that visible due to a join I put liquid plastic glue on and then use an old brush to brush to melt away the line. I used the technique on the Games Workshop Watchtower which had very annoying join lines. I combine it with scalpel work.

It is mine...
To be honest, its probably one of the only mold lines I am ok with leaving, just because it was such a pain, and I felt the more I did to it, the more I was making it worse. Plastic cement may have worked, not sure - I don't use it all that much to be honest.
Let me see it in person first, because before it was painted, I didn't notice it all that much....

Sorry guys, I'm back from the "limbo" :blush:
1) Not sure what to do with the direwolfs base - the difference between two pieces seems marginal to me. The problem might be the method used - drybrush, which made it seem more pronounced. So i might - a) paint it over, b) cover incirminated parts with some kind of natural material - leaves, moss etc. I have also changed the colour of his feathers, but I don't have a picture yet.
2) I wanted to finish some of the WIP stuff...

So only thing left to finish painthing is plastic Carl, specifically Deathclaw. Working on him right now, hopefully I'll have him finished tomorow and I'll also have a chance to take some pics...
After that - I'll just have to figure out the way how make everything safe for the shipping - but considering that I recieved everything quite right, that shouldn't be a problem. Also insurance for the package will have to be quite high, just in case something would go wrong (I hope not of course, but you know...)

It sounds like the good Warlord is satisfied with your service. I could be interested to contract the painting of WAAAGH! Konrad to you in full, sometime in the medium-term future. It would though be something in the vicinity of 150 models, so it'd be mass production rather than masterclass.

I've always wanted to try painting orcs on large quantities - since I also have like 150 of them (40K) and I quite like using "quick and dirty" methods with them...
I have 5 five of regular boys as a painting challenge in my local gaming club. Those 5 took me 6 hours to paint, but I can imagine beeing even faster, also thanks to painting 20 of them in the row, not 5. Here is a little timelapse...

As I'm checking my records, it was actually 25 hours for 60 models (54 boyz and 6 nobz)...but that was really a bare minimum - base colours, some wash and one layer of highlight on yellows, whites and skin...I'd be more happy to do something in the middle of those two examples...

That would mean 25 minutes per miniature. Thank you for those pictures, they are a useful benchmark for gauging value for money.
Would you be happy to do 35 minutes per orc on foot, 25 per goblin on foot, additional 10 minutes if mounted on a wolf or boar? I'm thinking clothing in a few different browns of leather, some basic steel colour for metal parts, a skin colour that's a lighter, brighter green than what you have on those two, and the same brown wash on the entire model? Mounts would largely be fine as just a drybrush job. No need for basing, that's something I'd rather do myself to ensure consistency with my other armies.
I'd want a pinch more effort per model than those two orks in the photos, but not much. I think the end result would be simple but quite effective if they were a bit brighter, something that I think would be achieved using brown wash instead of black and a lighter, brighter skin colour for more contrast between the wash and the highlighted areas. The brown wash would make the steel look dirtier, but that'd be entirely intentional.

Sounds doable. 10 extra minutes might not be enought for most of the cav, but drybrushed fur on wolves/ boars might work out...

15 extra minutes for cavalry is fine, I was just trying to get a feeler for what you're ready for. Characters could get two hours each.
This won't happen immediately, I actually haven't built a single orc model yet. I've found that I like building and converting a lot more than painting, so commissioning you for the painting should be good. Before I start building orcs, I'll have to get my Empire army into fighting shape, and I'd rather not mix miniatures painted by me and a commission painter in the same army.
When it happens though, I would prefer something like the following:
I commission a handful of models at first, just so you can try out how to paint them and find a style that I can agree with. I would pay you for every test round though, so don't worry about me being a difficult customer :icon_wink:
Once we have found a satisfactory style, I would commission you to paint a unit or two in that style, just so you get a feel for how efficiently you can do the same on a larger scale.
Then, if I'm satisfied with the result and the cost, and if you feel you can do it for another hundred or two models, I'd commission you to paint the entire WAAAGH on the same terms.
Does that sound good to you? I'm just trying to find a way to avoid disappointment either way, and I'm ready to pay for some extra back-and-forth postage for that purpose.

He is a tankbusta indeed - converted from fantasy orc boys standart bearer's arms and rokkit launcha rocket. It's called tankhammer and it does D3 mortal wounds if it hits, but it kills the bearer as well. Classic marvel of orc technology :D

Silvero, I had another thought. How would you like to paint some Dark Elf Cold One Knights? 3 units, 6 models per unit, full command group in each unit. Also, a lone hero riding a cold one. That is, 19 mounted models similar enough to be suitable for batch painting. Do you think you could do a decent result in, say, 30 hours?

Thanks Warlord! These guys are actually Mountain's men - they serve under the Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane of Lannisters...
They seem to be close to the GW's 28 mm heroic scale, ranging from 32 ang higher depending on the unit. I have to snap some size comparsion pic, but I don't really have any GW's fantasy models on the table now...

How is your queue currently looking? I could consider commissioning 50 halberdiers to be painted, if you can do with a time budget of 40 minutes per model, and stay somewhat consistent with a sample model I provide.

I'm a bit unsure about the highlights on Cersei's dress. Maybe a bit overdone? Otherwise I think you've done great work with the cloth everywhere, especially with the Mountain.

I'm good with the highlights, although it does stand out just a bit, perhaps a regal look to it as a result.
Those figures look very good. Always tempted by good looking figures, yet need to resist here as well.

On first draft her robe looked a bit plain. Then I went with few more highlights - customer liked so I have kept it as is. Since there was more then 100 minis involved in this commission, I didn't really have too much space even for the characters themselves - about 1-1,5 hour on average...

Hi Guys, long time no see. I worked on a bunch of commissions lately, but firstly I have to share my latest endeavour - 16 converted halberdiers as a adddition to my old unit, probably painted some 10 years ago. Yes, these are rank and file Spearmen from 6th ed. starter set. I have a 20 man unit of regular spearmen I have probably used once in my games. So 30 more of the same minis I converted into Halberdiers, which are pretty handy, mostly as detachments... :smile2:

Yeah - I like some of the minis better too. We agreed on time frame for the whole commission, but since each of these minis is very shape and colour specific, I ended up doing some of theme better justice than others :unsure:

Hey Guys, long time no see. I was working on loads of stuff since my list visit (most of them being ASOIAF) - I might share just some interesting ones, I don't want to spam this thread completely (as I did in the past :blush:)
BUT, I have also found some time at the weekends and started working on my own way old swordsmen. Both of them bought second hand, some of them with some paint already on. I always wanted these ones so badly since I started with my empire but never bought them when they were officially on sale for some reason. So finally - some redemption :-D
Still WIP, but getting close. Basing is pretty plain, but since almost all of my troops look like that, I didn't bother to change that...

Not really, I got half of the unit already put together and painted a bit. For some reason, couple of guys were made to look really similar and I didn't have spare parts when I started painting them :mellow:

Good luck! It took a lot time for me to paint them too. I remember them beeing on the shelves at the time when I started with Warhammer Fantasy (6th ed., I bought empire half of the starter set), but they were soon taken down and replaced by the not-so-good 7th ed. plastic kit - so I didn't manage to buy them retail, for some reason I got two boxes of Free Company. So I'm glad I did get them second hand later :smile2:

Thanks guys! Well it started with a couple of cheap second hand units - 13 Chaos Knight (painted, not great so I'm currentyl re-painting half of them, later I'm gonna re-paint the rest), about 30 Chaos marauders (really bad paintjob and state overall - gonna have 20 of them re-painted soon), 10 Marauder Hormsen -bad paintjob, but I don't use them that much, so they will be probably painted last, some 20 chaos warriors (also bad paintjob, most of them are quickly re-painted and some hands swapped, but still WIP), 8 old metal wathounds (they were WIP, I painted them in some quicky and drity fashion but I really like how they turned out) and two Chariots (with Gorebeast options, one with magnets on, second one in pretty bad state - I don't really like how they look, so I'm probably gonna convert them somehow and paint them later too)...
Last year I have bought some more warriors - some painted, some in sprue. But I'm not completely sure which weapons to use, how big units and which marks - I like tzeench ones with hand weapons and shilds - defensive option and khorne ones with two weapons - highly offensive option, but they die pretty quickly and they are also pretty expensive...
I laso bought a couple of ironguts (just primed), tried them once on battlefield, so I'm not sure if I should go with 2handed weapons or 2 hand weapons. I'll also probably convert them a bit as well...
Two already painted spawns for a few euros were originally meant as a proxy for Possessed model for Mordheim, but they are too big for that. But they come in handy for WFB as well...
Recently I was offered a khorne bloodcrushers (in sprue) for cheap so I grabbed them. Not sure if I'm gonna keep the deamonic riders, try to swap them for chaos riders with some Deamons player, or I'll try to convert some chaos riders from bits. I also need to get som proper bases for them :)
5 warhounds (from 40K fenrisian wolves) were originally painted for my Middenheim Mordheim gang, as well as well as the Chaos Lord/Exalted Hero on foot (with some simple head swap - I later reallised he looks kinda like Wulfrik the Wanderer :D

Its funny how easy armies assemble themselves sometimes.
Its what happened to me with my Orc and Goblin Army.
I took my mates army, and extra sprues, painted the whole thing, while fixing models.
As I went I gave him a few more options, i took his arrer boyz which he always used as choppa boys anyway, bought some replacements for him, I already had some Night Goblins, I gave him a bunch of common goblins that I had because I bought wolves and didn’t use the riders, sold 1 of his units to get him some extra stuff and in the end somehow I had an army of equivalent size to what he started with. Plua he got a painted army for his 30th.

So I have finally finished the Marauders at the start of the week. As I have said, they were pretty horribly painted by the previous owner. I regret the I didn't take a picture of them before I started the process, but there was a one layer of probably Bronzed flash right on the bare plasitic, same with the chainmail withouth any wash, some bits such as wolf pelts were just a grey plastic, so you get the idea :D
First I wanted to paint them really quickly, so I have applied a couple of washes, but at the and, I did about 4-5 layers on skin, more highlights on metals then I previously wanted and so on. So, after about 15 hours of work, this 21 man unit is finished and ready to praise chaos gods :)

BTW: I have managed to find a new buddy in Prague who is really excited to get back to 6th ed. Warhammer Fantasy Battles. We have played once with my Chaos and Empire troops so far, but he already started to look for an army for himself. It might be a long stretch, but you might look forward to some homebrewn battle reports in few months ahead :)
