Miscellaneous Kickstarters ...
« on: May 06, 2018, 03:51:33 PM »
This one looks interesting ...

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/artis-opus/artis-opus-series-s-brush-set?ref=recs&ref=discovery

There are only a few hours to go.  I've not quality brushes like this before, and I'm contemplating signing up for these.

What do ya think?

They looked good but frankly there's a billion stores around me that sell good brushes. I just didn't feel the need to get in on a kickstarter for more.

Looks good!  I like that it seems to be more of a card game with a board for keeping track of progress.

First Kickstarter I've ever backed.  But this is a game I want to get in front of since I came late to the A Few Acres of Snow party.

I have A Few Acres of Snow, and it is fun.

Are these the same guys (I'm not in front of the game shelf currently) :icon_question:

Not sure about the publishers but Martin Wallace is the same game designer.

Interesting.  I'll check when home next.  Might pledge for a copy after all.

A Few Acres of Snow was published by Tree Frog Games, and yes, Martin Wallace's name is on the cover.

I'm going to pledge on this one.  Going to talk around to family and friends to see if anyone else wants in on the larger quantity pledge level.

Seems like there's been a bit of controversy over the rules for Lincoln already, although it also seems the designer is reviewing it as well.

Ya, I'm not really sure what to make of it.  The issue being that there's really only one strategy needed to win by the CSA.  I feel like it's a min/max angle and while it is an issue I'm not sure if it's as aggravated as it's made out to be.  The reason I say this is because this is being compared to the "Halifax Hammer" in A Few Acres of Snow.  I played AFAOS in its 2nd edition rules so I couldn't fully work it out because I think that strategy had been mitigated, but without having the communal think tank to let me know what it was I wouldn't have found it out (probably).  And it makes me think the same way here.  I dunno.  I'm monitoring the situation and if it seems untenable I may change my pledge, but for now I'm still in.

My copy of A Few  Acres of Snow is the 2nd editon as well, and frankly, I love it.

Suspect they'll find a fix for this, if it's really that big of a deal.  I'm likely going to pledge anyway, but I've spent so much money on the Overrunners campaign and the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion campaign, plus upped my pledge on the Rubble campaign that I'm delaying as I watch this as well.

That's part of the problem to me.  Some folks that are complaining about the brokenness of Lincoln are the same ones that say the Halifax Hammer broke AFAOS.  I don't think that's true at all for AFAOS.  There just seems to be a very small, very aggressive group on Board Game Geek that are railing against this that makes me hesitant to just abandon the game.

The mixed blessings of internet whining.

At least there is awareness of a potential issue, but once they latch on to something, the whining has only just begun. :icon_lol:

Competitive Board Game Geeks can be pretty rough. I know a guy who will pause a game of Catan to go and quickly whip up a spreadsheet to figure out the best method to win. Meanwhile the rest of us are trading wood back and forth just so we can make jokes about "Giving each other wood".

I understand statistics and probability is a huge part of gaming, but boiling a game down to nothing but a math problem seems boring and pointless.

And instead of working on their own skills for tactics and strategy, having things be a challenge and fun, sometimes losing, sometimes not, they think they are being cute using math.

Quite like the Iron Hands - the calculus states...... we will not enter engagement unless the calculus produces a win scenario.

Only so many hours remaining on this one ...

Martin Wallace's Lincoln ACW board game

Also ... found this one ... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1263001724/anno-domini-1666?ref=recs_featured

I like the 28mm miniatures that come with this game, although not sure I'll go in for it with so many recent kickstarters, and coming back from my excursion to the Huzzah! 2018 gaming convention.

AARRgh - Pirates

My immediate reaction was that I already have loads of pirates - more pirates, but there are quite a few interestingly different figures in this.
