Title: Has anyone tried dipping?
Post by: gorenut on June 02, 2006, 07:18:21 AM
Just curious if any of you have painted your empire figures with the dipping method.  How well did it work for you?  Any key websites for further tips?  Thanks.

I've considered the idea, but havent actually done it.

I think it could definately work, but would require a lot of detail work, which sort of negates a lot of the whole purpose behind dipping.

Works much better on more 'organic' armies...

I will dip my army when I have finished modeling it. My army is a peasant rebellion so I  think dipping will work with the muted brown/grey/green colors. It might be problematic with the brighter empire provinces, especially those that use blue, eg. Altdorf...

I will use a quite diluted dip and add lots of details later. Also I will apply the "dip" with a large brush rather than with actual dipping to get better control. I paint extremely slowly so it will save lots of time anyway. The results that can be achieved on armour especially are certainly better than anything I could achieve by painting.

It's an interesting technique, but the amount of tidying up afterwards puts me off attempting it. It looked very nice on the tyranids he had done, but on the empire, I don't think all the puffy sleeves would work as well.

Not to be picky, but those were kroots I think :)
You might be talking about something else though.

Sounds like a cool technique, although like stated above, I doubt it'd work very well with standard Empire uniforms.

There are Tyranids further down the page...

And this chap in the link is my local store manager by the way, and an amazing painter. :-)

Actually I think the puffy sleeves will work excellent with dipping, you get dark shading in the patterns and ligther shading in the folds of cloth, but we will se as soon as I get my hand on some Liberon light walnut!

What is the difference between dipping and applying an ink wash (in terms of effect)?

Dipping by the look of it takes longer, is more risky, and effects the whole model. Inks on the other hand can be applied to an exact area of a model, and IMO, look better on empire models.

There was a longish thread about this last year, and it should be easy to find in the Search.

If I recall correctly the conclusion was much along the lines that it worked well with certain armies.
Any skeletons, zombies, greenskins where there was a dominant base colour.

yea, I ask because I know it works good for certain armies, but it seems like a bad thing with any human armies that require a neater look.  I might test it out on one guy since my color scheme is grittier and darker .

I don't think it may work with an Averland army but will give it a try with one model...

An Averland Army? I don't think so... I'm painting one, and the dip will probably mess up the yellow completely.

Anyway, please tell once you've tried.  :-)

I already tried it and didn't work.     :-(

Been there, done that, with an entire unit of swordsmen. They look awesome. I still need to paint their swords, then Purity Seal them before I take and post some pictures.

What is this about "breaking"? Is this a metaphor for something, or can the models actually break, and if so does anybody know why and if it can be prevented?
