On a side note: volcanic activity is generally inversely correlated with sun activity: lower in periods of prolonged maxima of solar activity and higher in periods of prolonged solar minima. Since 2019/2020, we have entered such a period of prolonged solar minima, which some believe may last until 2050.

... amazing, stunning ... clearly the man-made earthen retaining wall on the eastern end of the higher valley has not been a success.

.. it won't belong now before the lava flow reaches the ocean. The retaining walls worked for a short time, although not enough.

Suspect the Icelanders are disappointed, and my empathy for the situation is present.

Apparently the eruption in the Congo has stopped for the moment, although 15 folks have lost their lives and many houses and proprerty has been destroyed.

... and evidently scientists are saying that the lava will probably reach the parking lot and ocean in the next week or two ... this next video shows drone footage taken from one end of the valley where the retaining walls were built, and then pans out over the break in the eastern wall, and then out over the perhaps 100 meter fall of lava to the next valley further below that leads to the parking lot ...

An interesting development ... no lava is currently flowing today into the valley where it'll eventually meet the parking lot. No explanation as to why this isn't still happening, yet.

The trail to the closest mountain to the volcano is close to being cutoff by the lava that is flowing, and so it will be harder to get as close to it as before, although it has gotten so large that it can still be viewed well from a mountain side further back ...

... it is interesting to see how the lava is now shaping the sides of this valley as it takes a more southerly route down the steep side, and then along the edge of the valley slowing changing its structure and shape.

This is geology in motion starting with the original earthquake below the surface, which in turn opened up a crack/path for the magma to rise to the surface, creating the initial craters and flows, and then now with only one large crater the magma continues to flow out over the surface of the earth and towards the ocean where it will change the shape of the land there as well.

The lava flow has created a new path south into the lower valley near where it's been making a route to the road before reaching the ocean, and the new route is seen making the connection at about m1 minute and 50 seconds into this video ...
