Title: Small Mordheim interlude, with table!
Post by: hagen88 on August 28, 2015, 04:33:04 PM
Hi all!

I have NOT been very productive at work today, and it would feel hypocrit to start doing something useful at 5 in the afternoon, so I decided to track down some pics of my mordheim table (really bad pics I'm afraid) an post them here.

I am opening another thread just because this really does not belong to my Averland nor Bretonnia plogs, it's just meant to show you guys what lies in my Turin's house basement!

Here what I've done by now:

I started to work on a mordheim table board last year before graduating (neglecting my thesis of course) and I was very pleased with the result... Then I realised I just completed 1/4 of the gaming board and I lost my courage.
What you see here is the gaming board so far... I initially considered to build four tiles of 50x50 cm and this is the first one. The tile is made of foam and the cobblestone has been drawn with a pen (I still feel the pain in my a** remembering it) and then painted (no sprays of course)... The buildings where designed and then modeled taking inspiration from typical german/holland medieval architecture with the usual amount of fantasy, then I applied the damages of a fireburn and years of abandonment.
As always in Mordheim I feel like it's all a matter of details n the end so I tried to push myself into adding more and more of them: skeletons hanging from rooftop beams, shields casually lying on a corner, old theatrical pamphlets and wanted signs, murales made with blood, etc... Oh and barrels! Barrels EVERYWHERE!

Then in another madness attack I decided it was not enough to have a regular board but I also wanted the possibility to play inside the sewers of Mordheim! So in a crazed weekend frenesy I built a 100x100cm board showing the underground of mordheim... Not much actually, just some foam engraved with a pen and some texture and raw thatch here and there (Oh and barrels! Barrels EVERYWHERE!) but in the end the result was nice enough and I'm sure we will have great games on it once I'll be able to complete also the upper part of it, which will take a LOOOONG while I'm afraid since none of my friends is willing to help me! But here it is:

And finally some members of my new band: MARIENBURGERS!

These three fella were great fun to put together... I know they don't exactly match the esthetic of the marienburg merc of Mordheim but I wanted to go for something different... Source of inspiration were the movies Barry Lindon (must be one of my favourites) and the greatest mean character of all times, Tim Roth 'Archibald Cunning' in Rob Roy!
I wanted to represent a band of duellists, fancy dressed and perfumed but under wigs and silk they are covered in scars and as tough as any other warrior in the town...

So here goes my Reiklanders: The wolves of Reikwald

First of all, let me introduce you Wilhelm "der Metzger", my Mercenary captain and a true Reikland patriot

He is obviously inspired from a famous cinema "villain", and I converted him to resemble the greatest actor of all times, could you guess who are we talking about?

His Lieutenant, Sergeant Krantz "the Bear" of Teufelbruck

I am especially proud of the twin tailed comet tatoo on his face

Then we have the champion and duellist of the mob, Archibald, nicknamed "Peacock" after his pompous style and manners

And finally the youngblood, Dieter "Marienburg" (inspired by the same movie as the captain, who will catch the reference?)

Then moving on to the troops, the Reikwald Ghosts, my marksmen

The two Helmgart brothers, Odo and Berthold, so poor they have to use some helmets as bucklers

And finally the newest addiction to the band: Iljia, the kislevite swordsman

Here they are, I finished them around one year ago and I am currently waiting for my friends to finish their warbands so that they can finally see the table!

Allow me to answer that question by a visual expression of my admiration for your work:

I think I've already commented on your fantastic Reiklanders on warseer. Your marienburgers are superb as well. Your conversions are stunning and very dynamic and you really manage to make your miniatures appear as 'one piece'.

There are surprisingly few replies to this thread, so I think people are somehow not scrolling down far enough - you should probably put some photos of your miniatures in your first post.

In fairness, I fainted after the other two threads and just came around now to see this  :icon_biggrin:

In all seriousness, I'd love to have a game of Mordheim on that board. Love the details, even down to the little shield. Take a bow. Take a bow.

Of course it is! As it is most of my marienburger band, even if the guy with the eyepatch was done as a tribute to the Chevalier de Balibary of the movie Barry Lindon, another one of my favourite movies!

I really like your miniatures. Full of personnality, clearly better than GW.

I ask you an advice : you begin to work GS as soon as you affix it on the miniature, or you wait for some time before doing it ?

Hi touboteno...tutoubo... Hi! :biggriin:
Thanks for the compliment, although my inspiration comes right from GW products, only not modern ones unfortunately.
When I work my greenstuff I do it straight after having applied it to the mini, which is immediately after having mixed the components together, without waiting... If I want to have a smooth surface I just put more blue instead f yellow, that means I have less troubles with the sticky part (the yellow one). I always use to deep my instrument in clean water when i want to obtain a smooth result, it really makes a difference!
Hope this was helpful!

Hi guys! I have some interesting Mordheim related news!

I've been contacted by a very special client to work on a commission: a whole Marienburg warband to be done in the same style as the three fellas I posted above!
Normally I don't accept commissions (my hobby time is limited and I don't like painting for money) but this one sounded really interesting and promising! I always wanted to keep on working on my marienburgers but I always struggled to find the motivation and now that will push me to finish them! As for now we are still discussing the detail, but I decided to move a bit further and started sketching an idea for a Marienburger captain:

Meet captain Jan Van Hoogen, commander of the Company of the Golden Mermaid, better known as "the greedy wenches".

Jan started his life as Johan Hagensson, son a courtesan in Wurtbad. Aged twelve he was sold to a mercenary company, and during the next 25 years he fought his way to the higher ranks, finally becoming a condottiere and gaining an ill reputation during the civil wars of the Age of the Three Emperors, selling his services to whomever was paying better and never swearing allegiance to a single pretender. After years of battles and treacherous conduct he finally retired to Marienburg where he used his blood stained wealth to buy himself a place among the raising merchant guilds of the city. He had a plan to grow old and wealthy in Marienburg but after some years he bit off more then he could chew and got involved in financing a risky expedition to Lustria which went really bad and cost him almost all his money.
Desperate to recover his fortunes he realises he just have one chance left: going back to his previous life as a soldier, squeezing back in his old armour and using all the little money he has left to hire a small mercenary company contacting some of his old "loyal" comrades, murderous rapist all of them. He had heard of Mordheim and the magic stones which seems to be turning mad everybody in the Empire and decides a last good plunder might turn the wheel of fortune back in his favour.

So instead of a grizzled and muscular veteran he is now an old, embittered and greedy fat man, who's desperate for money and doesn't give a horse sh**t about the lives of his men and certainly not about the ones of their opponents. He's definitely not a chubby fellow with whom you'd like to share a drink down at the tavern!

I'll start converting him as soon as I can and make sure to post it in here if it's of any interest to you guys!

Thank guys!

Work has started on fat old Jan, I'm having a BLAST converting him, even  at this very early wip stage.

He is turning out exactly as I planned, I hope to find some times to keep going on him tomorrow since it's being incredibly enjoyable!

Next phase will include polishing the breastplate, chiseling a twin tailed mermaid onto it (emblem of Marienburg), and then move on to the arms (bulking him a bit with some shoulderpads, but fear not, nothing similar to a Stormcast one! :-P) and the details, like the hat and the curly wig (which will give hime the fop touch he needs)...

Thanks guys!
I really like the sword, and I'm looking forward to seeing that mermaid.
Doc J, the sword is a very simple conversion, just used the militia arm with the armour and the saber and substitute it with a greatsword blade cut above the leather shaft. The original plan was to give the impression of a rapier or a fancier weapon but in the end I quite like the look of the heavier blade, looks like something a mariner might use, and I think it fits the fatass better.
For the mermaid I'm sorry to disappoint you but I abandoned the idea... The reason is very simple, I did sculpt one on sunday but it turned out that the details above it (the leather belt for the pistol's ammunitions and the lace around his neck) covered most of it and made it unrecognisable... A good sculptor must admit to himself that sometimes less is more (often) and so I decided to leave the mermaid aside and go on with the original plan as shown in the sketch. I am currently sculpting the ammunitions and the hair/wig, I hope I'll be able to post progresses soon!

The head is from the militia set, the one with the bandana on his head, but I changed it pretty consistently, adding some fat around the cheeks and neck, mustaches and the eyebrows! Then I transformed the bandana into a helmet and added a hat (currently wip)

Consider me fully disappointed you suck......but I think you made a good choice with going with a heavier sword blade, fighting with a rapier would require a dexterity and finesse that this guy wouldn't have. Anyway an old mercenary like him would probably want a sword with some heft to it anyway. It reminds me of some of the straight blade heavy cavalry or dragoon swords.

Wow!

You might consider adding fat to his thighs too. And maybe lowering his codpiece, and adding some girth that shows under his breastplate. Because those General legs are rather long and lessen the fat image.

Just my twopence.  :-)

As usually thank you very much for the kind words guys,
Life has been a bit of a b**ch of late, so work on the marienburger commission are pretty much on hold... I did progress a bt further with the captain though, so I wanted to share the advancements with you and listen to your ideas/chriticisms.

The ammunition belt is still wip of course, but I'm pretty satisfied with how the skirt came out, it bulks him up and gives him a marienburg feeling IMHO.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

You know, I didn't think about that at all! The idea really tickles me , I might discuss it with the client! I tell you, sculpting this fatass is being really enjoyable, something different from the usual muscular brute for a change, so I assume that doing more of this kind of conversions would actually be pretty interesting!
Yesterday I received in the mail some Empire goodies form an unnamed benefactor, among which a metal Marius Leitdorf (new version)... Since my army bg is firmly set in the aftermath of his death I was thinking what to do with the model and I decided to go with a similar approach and convert a fat mounted general, maybe Marius' spoiled cousin Konrad from the novel Sword of Justice. The sculpt is pretty bulky on its own (something that always put me off slightly) so I think it would be the perfect candidate for another "fat experiment"!

Where do you find your inspiration ?

That's actually an interesting question! As somebody who love talking about my process I could go on for hours but if I have to try to summarize it I'd say that the great majority of my inspiration still comes from the wonderful game Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (1st and 2nd editions) which to me still stands undefeated as the best game I have ever played. If I have to pick up a boardgame then I would undoubtly say Mordheim which represents the peak of GW production IMHO. In terms of art I guess it's pretty obvious that I refer to John Blanche, Ian Miller, Karl Kopinski, Paul Dainton and Dave Gallagher as my main inspirations, I really struggle to get the newer vision of the art department I'm afraid.
Last but not least is the work of painters and hobbists like Jackob Nielsen, Jeff Vader and the Punk Moth crew (there are soo many others but these are the names I can think of now) and of course the great painters and modellers in forums like warhammer empire and warseer.
I thought I could quit the hobby or take a break from it so many times but the work of people like them always drags me back with a mad passion I can't deny! ::heretic::

Very nice work so far

There were a couple of fat Mordhiem Reiklander captains if you need some additional ideas for overweight WHFB scale humans. Your guy is great though, don't get me wrong. He doesn't need help.

Liked those figures as they just gave the right hint of "over the hill" without being really Ott. This does it very nicely too.

I'm with you on WFRP and Mordheim.  I really liked the artwork FFG did for WFRP 3rd ed.  Shame about the game.....

Anyway,  great work on your captain sculpt.  I wish I could sculpt.  It's the one part of the hobby I'm totally useless at.  I have bucket loads of ideas for kitbash and conversions, that I've not done because of it.

Oxy ... start small, just use alittle bit of greenstuff to do something minor to a figure, it'll build skill and confidence.  My main reason for not doing more green stuff is time, got all I can do to catch up in the painting of figures.

Good evening!

I've come back to Turin for a few days and found some more mordheim conversions in my cabinet, so I thought to share them with you.

Romhilda, Augur of the seventh tower

This was an ambitious conversion I did few years ago based on the then new DE witches kit... I had plans for a whole warband like her but never got to realise it (unsurprisingly)

The second one is a much less sophisticated conversion but one I'm really proud of:

This one i called "the Alchemist", I was inspired by the movie Vidoq to convert a mysterious and frightening individual... He is obsessed by eternal youth and is trying to develop a method for preserving it by "working" on young bodies he would do anything to get... He often sells his services to a warband but doesn't ask any money in exchange, only the youngest and more handsome member of the hiring band to go away with him after the battle... nobody knows what happens to them anymore, a price even the more ruthless captains have troubles to accept.

These two were a joy to make but I'll probably never get around to paint them, so I decided to sell them unfortunately (at least sis Romhilda) but I'm sure one day, maybe not so far away, i will see them painted, hopefully by someone talented!

Cheers guys!

Here I am again with another member of the marienburger warband for the commission. This time I present you Peetar Ruggbroeder, old friend of captain Jan Van Hoogen, veteran of thecivil wars and minority shareholder of the Company of the Golden Mermaid. He is a violent and ruthless brute, who spent most of his life on the battlefields of the Empire and retired to Marienburg with his captain where he acted as his bodyguard for almost twelve years. Having tied his fortunes to the ones of his commander he is now forced to follow him to Mordheim to help him recovering his money and privileges. Captain Van Hoogen promised him a good share of any loot they will pillage but he knows better then to trust that old and greedy fat bastard...

Now as I told the client I initially had some issues in the weapon choice he made (I am working on his list) since I considered greatsword and heavy armour to be a bit different from the dandy fops I had in mind... Then I realised these are MERCENARIES, they don't have to be all the same just because they come from the same place, so I decided to sculpt him a bit more heavy looking and aggressive, like a rugged doppelsoldner, a veteran from the same company that captain Jan used to lead during the civil wars and then retired to Marienburg with him to act as his personal bodyguard.
If I had to paint him I know for sure he would be black skinned, don't ask me why, I just know he would look AWESOME as an arabian but fully landsknecht sell sword! Trust me, I saw it in one of my lotus induced visions!

Hi again!

I've found some time to work on the marienburg warband during the weekend, so I present you my progresses:

This one is the new addition to the Company of the Golden Mermaid, Rijk Van Rijker, commander of the Rijker's Jacks and minor shareholder of the company. Rijk was a sergeant of the Rijker's garrison, the imposing fortress which guards the entrance to Marienburg (and which wasn't yet converted to a penitentiary at the time of Mordheim's destruction) and was well respected by his men and superiors as a capable leader and an exceptional fighter. He had just one soft spot which eventually caused his fall: gambling... He could never resist a bet and was well known in the Suiddock taverns and play houses where he spent most of his free time entertaining with seamen, whores and less recommendable individuals. He blew up more than one salary in a single night but he always managed to escape serious consequences until a winter night in the year 1999, when he took part in a game of "Twelve Counts" with some rich dignitaries in Goudberg which, surprisingly, he won. Accused of cheating by a young fop he answered like every soldier would have done: by challenging the accuser to a duel. Unfortunately for him the boy was Loedwijk Onderzoecker, nephew of one of the most important man in town and when the new of the duel spreaded into the alleys Rijk's fate was already sealed: he was arrested the same night along with the three men of his garrison who accompanied him and they were all sentenced to death by drowning to prevent a scandal... The morning of the execution they were all prepared to meet Manaan in his cold embrace when a fat merchant arrived to the docks with a letter in his hand, presenting him as Captain Jan Van Hoogen of the Company of the Golden Mermaid and declaring the four men were his "partners" and the company would have covered the costs for their freedom. That same evening the whole group was leaving Marienburg heading east, and none of them looked back to the Vloedenmuur if not for cursing the city and its corrupt inhabitants one last time.

And here you can see him along with his companion Peetar Ruggbroeder... There isn't much trust nor love between the two of them.

Hehe, thanks guys! I work as an architect but I sculpt since I was 12 I believe. I am also deeply interested in history and hoplology, though I still make mistakes! A good friend of mine I just showed my champion told me that the pose I chose for the musketeer would actually meant that the ammunition would have probably falled down the barrel!

Haha, if you say so! I studied in both Italy (Politechnic school of Turin) and South America (Catholic University of Chile) and I'm currently working in London... But I'd say that my inspirations come from my sketchbooks and my travels more than my studies, and of course my 15 years old wargaming and roleplaying experience! I always loved sketching, drawing, sculpting, painting and everything that just has to do with connecting my brain to my hands (even in my day to day job I try to limit the use of computers and work with hand drawing and model making... It's amazing how useful it is to visualise things with your hands rather than on a screen!)

Thanks Lateksimajava! Your army is a work of art and an incredible display of love toward warhammer... I think your archer with the hunting permission chart is one of the most inspiring conversions I've seen on the internet! I'm glad I return the inspiration you gave me, Mordheim is the best game gw ever came out with, and if they are not going to support it anymore then we must!

Beautiful models, I wish you would consider sculpting some from scratch and casting them!

Thanks! It's strange since I received the same comment a number of times lately. As I said, I never considered it for three reasons:

1- I don't know anybody or have any contact with a company which casts miniatures.
2- I reckon there is a BIG difference between sculpting miniatures for yourself and sculpting them for actual production... You would have to have a solid understanding of molds and casting technologies, be able to work digitally and in different scales (which, believe it or not, is much more difficult than 28 mm if you are not used to) and in general it works very differently from what I've always done.
3- as I said this is my hobby, I try to avoid to make it a job not because I dislike the money (god knows if I need them to live a decent life in London) but because is my only escape from life and work stress! I'm enjoying this commission but I already turned down others because they wouldn't let me dedicate to my projects and that's not my idea of hobby.

That said, I would lie if I told you I'm not considering to produce some minis in the future. I always dreamt (like most of us I suppose) to create my own game complete with bg, fluff and my own range of minis, and I always admire the work of people like that guy from Kingdom Death and the ability to launch a Kickstart campaign and actually make it work! I just think times are not mature for it (or maybe I'm not). In this moment I've got enough going on in my life to make it difficult to find a couple of hours per week for my hobby and I don't want to use them for a project which would require my full energies and attention.

Hehe, thanks Docj, really interesting advice! I'm not sure what I've got in my mind for the youngbloods will meet your expectations but they surely won't look like tough guys, that much I can assure you! I started working on one of them yesterday and got the frame done, pretty happy about it. he is more like a posh and green duellist, fresh out from a fancy gentlemen's academy and without any understanding of how grim and ferocius Mordheim really is. Think of him as a young dandy noble/merchant's son who thinks he is better than anyone else and will soon learn a tough, tough lesson about not wearing silk and fancy shoes in the streets of the City of Damned.

I don't know if you have come across oathsworm minatures but he recently started up scultpting and casting his own minatures and has had great success via I think three kickstarters - if you are inclined to try it might be worth asking him for tips as it's a kickstarter project I would back ;)

My undertsanding is the upfront cost of casting figures can be a good bit, yet exploring the idea could be good.

We have two members at least - White Knight and Westfalia - who are producing their own miniatures.

Now I know both 'design' the concepts and then get sculptors to sculpt them, but I am sure they would give you (possibly privately ) some idea of costs and what is involved in producing figures.

Certainly plastics is an expensive initial outlay, producing the moulds, but not sure about metal or resin ( or plasrin  :engel: ).
I have seen a metal figure producing spinning machine which involved a circular mould of around 10 figures, and I assume is easier to set up.

I am actually working on a concept deeply inspired by Lord Bullington from Barry Lindon... I always loved that character, especially the last duel between him and Redmond when he is so scared he pukes! That's exactly how I'm picturing the young fop I'm working on. You'll see soon enough!

I've talked to a couple of professional sculptures about private commissions and I can tell you the big expense is the sculpting. You've got that down cold.

Thank you guys, I am working on a surprise for you all, but in the meantime, work on the marienburgers is proceeding so let me introduce you:

Edvard Van Muntz, third son of the deceased Herr Loedwijk Van Muntz, ex businness partner of captain Van Hoogen.

As you might have noticed I drew a lot of inspiration from the amazing Lord Bullington from Barry Lindon, must be one of my favourite movies and it just have the perfect Marienburg vibe to me!

I have not received satisfaction!  :-P

Anyway, as you can see he is pretty much as I described him to Docj: a young nobleman, fresh from some posh academy where they told him a lot about fancy duels and how to powder a wig, but nothing at all that could prepare him to the horrors of the City of the Damned!
So here he is, terrified, trying to keep a semblance of a duelling stance while shaking incontrollably before some horrific enemy, with a face that is screaming "Why did I came here in the first place?!"

Eyes open on this forum, I've got a pretty big announcement to make next week!

Strange - it looks like it isn't on the 4th pic where the pistol is pretty much pointed at you, but it seems like it is on the first pic.

The mistery is soon solved guys, I actually drilled the barrel but I didn't have an head small enough on my drill so halfway through I had to stop or else I would have damaged the barrel... The hole it's like 1 mm deep now, it shouldn't show once painted methink... Of course the captain's pistol is drilled as well

Busy weekend, I managed to find some time for another quick addition to the band... This one is a test model for a group of troop inspired by the black hats, marienburg watchmen and town guards (official name is the Honorable Company of Lamplighters and Watchmen).

Though it turned out nice I am unsure about how a group of them would fit in the warband in terms of esthetic... I did want to distinguish between the heroes and the troop, but I would like to know what you guys think about him... He should be part of a group of two halberdiers group and another one with a couple of marksmen/handgunners... The other option was going all seamen with the troop, like mariners hired from the ships decks along the Suiddock canal. I think the Black hats are slightly more original as a concept though.

He's great. I would definitely like to see a warband where every model carries a lantern, if you paint them all with object source lighting. That would look awesome.

Also, I hereby petition our moderators to change your name to "G. Bernini".

LOL! Thanks Gneisenau!
The body comes from the bretonnian men-at-arms kit, I cut away the skirt and glued it to the legs of an empire greatsword. It is actually much easier to do it than to explain it! :-P

I really like the youngblood very foppish indeed,so what about the next one ? Perhaps one of his lackeys from his academy days or another perfumed dandy. I really like black hats from Honorable Company of Lamplighters and Watchmen, I would like to see more models done like this. Its a cool concept and most people forget about the little groups that exist to run the day to day of the old world. Its has given me inspiratition for my Bodenwald Militia. :eusa_clap:

I love your work Hagen88!

I'd love to have a game against your Reiklanders, as my Marienburg street gang warband would prove the perfect opponents.

They're led by a disgraced Warrior Priest of Sigmar, (and possibly great, great grandfather of a rather more famous character from the Storm of Chaos) Priest Valten, and backed up by a champion wielding a large cudgel like a man possessed!

They were inspired by a single line from the movie ' If you get all of us together, we ain't got a gang, we've got an army'. I've used the extra funds from having a Marienburg warband to buy as many cheap gang members as possible. They're called the  'Kaninchentot' btw

I'll have to get some pics up at some point - although your painting and sculpting would put mine to shame on the tabletop!

Thhat's just amazing mightymatt! the I would love to field my reiklander natives against your Kaninchentots and your Priest Valten! Hell, you can't imagine how much time I spent trying to convince one of my friends to do a middenheim warband based on Priest Vallon's dead rabbits!
Let's make a deal, if you ever come to Turin (where my warband and my mordheim board are waiting for their first taste of blood) drop me a pm and we will definitely play that battle, it would be a shame not to! I shall do the same if I ever happen to come to your whereabouts (where's that btw?) and be sure to travel with my reiklanders in my suitcase!

Oh, and please, find the time to post your marienburgers, I am terribly curious, post them in here, no problems at all!

It's a deal! I'm all the way over in rural Wiltshire in the UK, but I'm only 20 mins by train or car from Bath which is a lovely city and worth a visit! I'd love to see Turin one day, so maybe I can convince the wife to come for a long weekend - with the ulterior motive of getting in a game or two of Mordheim on your awesome board!

I'll do my best to get a picture up in the next few days of the warband - I never quite finished painting them as the campaign we were running petered out before I'd got round to it, but you've definitely inspired me to get them finished! I made new models for Priest and Münch (the Champion) after the campaign which still need painting, but I'll try and get them done soon.

Good morning guys!

I've got another pretty interesting announcement (well, it is for me at least :-P)
I just started my own blog, PINXIT, which will feature all my future endavours and will focus on a narrative approach to miniature sculpting and painting, much like what I did in here but I felt the need to create something a bit more "official" since I decided to move on with the sculpting venture!

http://hagenpinxit.blogspot.co.uk/

I invite all of you who is interested in my work to visit it and leave comments/feedbacks. Not much by now, I need to find some spare time to update the blog with all my projects, including mordheim, bretonnia, empire and so on, but you will find a tease of what I am working on at the moment which I hope you'll like.
Thanks!

Hagen

Hagen, your models are awesome. Came across this thread after searching google for Mordheim terrain and having looked at your other threads I just wanted to say how inventive and well executed they are.

I'm building a Mordheim board for a campaign that's starting soon, and I love the way your buildings look. They look fairly simple to make but look very detailed and interesting. I'm wondering if you'd be able to describe the process you went through for creating the average building, or even better perhaps a tutorial on how you made them please?

Threadomancy!!!
I know it's been literally years since I updated this blog... Truth is with all the scorn that AoS was getting I felt my experiments with the new setting would not have been too well received in here. But we are back to Mordheim now and since I have fond memories of posting on this forum I decided to resuscitate this thread and post my recent works and, hopefully, all about the campaign we are preparing for this coming July!

This is Graf Hrobert Von Uhland, the Red Griffon of Carroburg and the first mordheim adventurer I have been working on in more than 2 years.
Hrobert is a Freelance Knight who'll be joining my reiklanders as soon as I have the money to afford his hiring cost.
The model was created to represent the "perfect knight", the iconic Empire martial nobleman who is a graceful cross between Holy Roman Empire knights and militarist prussian aristocracy. I wanted to reflect this as much as possible in the model and so the bits fro the conversion were carefully selected from a number of kits to give an idea of martial prowess and high birth.

For those of you who are interested in a bit of background this is the tragic story of this hired sword.

Who is the Red Griffon of Mordheim? Some say he is a paragon of knightly virtue, worthy of the blood of the Unberogens that runs thick in his veins. Others swear he is only a miserable oathbreaker and a traitor of his class.
Whatever the truth all concur one one thing: a terrible curse hangs heavily upon him.

Hrobert Von Uhland was born in Carroburg, the second son of Burgraf Leitmar Von Uhland and Baroness Olla Von Siebold-Stoltzer. Destined to a military career the boy was sent to Altdorf court where he had the honour of studying under Count Dietrich Van Dorff, weapon master of Prince Siegfried. Quickly realising his potential his teacher entrusted the young to the order of the Knights of Sigmar's Blood where Hrobert was accepted at the age of eighteen.
HIs career within the order was rapid and successful. At the Battle of Helmgart he distinguished himself as a squire of the Claw Guard subsequently earning his spurs at the tournament of Ubersreik, where he unhorsed seven senior knights including the Count of Nordland and finally ascended to the rank of Preceptor, one of the youngest knights to receive this honour.
HIs raising star seemed unstoppable and many of his fellow knights would look at him as a candidate to the title of Grand Master one day. But that all changed a few years later when Hrobert was implicated in the scandal of the Wedding Procession of Countess Von Alptraum.
Betrothed to the Elector Count Martin of Stirland the Countess was preparing her long voyage from Averheim to Wurtbad and to grant her protection along the road the Knights of Sigmar's Blood sent a detachment under the command of Graf Von Uhland.
When the caravan was attached by beatmen while crossing the Stir Hrobert was forced to face a difficult decision. His knights were taken by surprise by the assailants and the muddy ground of the river bank slowed their horses and prevented them to rally and disperse the enemy. Realising the danger Hrobert acted quickly, snatching the Countess from her coach and fleeing inside the Stirwald.
More than one month passed before the two managed to finally reach the gates of Wurtbad, bloody and exhausted but safe. Hrobert was saluted as a hero by the Count for saving his future bride but his gratitude turned into fury when, just a few days after their arrival, Countess Von Alptraum burst into teas and asked the count to cancel the wedding as her heart already belonged to the knight who so bravely saved her from certain death. Hrobert was still recovering from his woulds when the Count's guards arrested him and took him to court where he was immediately put on trial under accuse of seducing the young noblewoman.
Forced to defend himself and under threat of excommunication from his order Hrobert swore his innocence on everything he hold dear. He swore on his honour and when this failed in appeasing his judges he swore upon the lives of his family that he was true and he never touched the bride-to-be.
Eventually the Count's justicar was forced to release the young knight as no irrefutable evidence of his guilt was found but it was too late to stop the murmurs.
Von Uhland's reputation received the final blow only one year after, when news of a tremendous calamity that befell the city of Mordheim, in Ostermark, reached the halls of the knights' fortress.
A second letter came from Carroburg just a few days after announcing that Hrobert's father, the Burgraf, his firstborn son and his wife were all visiting the court of Count Von Steinhard when the city was smothered by Sigmar's wrath.
Those who were present at his trial in Wurtbad were quick to remember Hrobert's words and the oath he sworn upon the life of his family. Now they all lay dead and to many that was proof enough that the knight had lied and tarnished his reputation beyond repair. He was immediately expelled from the order and sent back to Carroburg in disgrace. Incapable of accepting the shame Hrobert refused to take his rightful place in his family's palace and sold all his lands and titles, giving the money to his ancient order and keeping only his armour and his steed.
Then he rode towards Mordheim, some say to try to find his parents alive and cleanse his reputation, while others suggest that he is merely seeking death to put an end to the curse he bestowed upon himself.
Nobody knows the truth anyway and many warriors found their doom during a duel with the Red Griffon for asking him about the Countess.

So a noble but cursed knight whose reputation hangs in balance between being the pinnacle of knighthood and a traitor of his sacred vows... Nobody will ever know where the truth lies.

Great to have you back! As we have come to expect from you, this conversion is fantastic, and so is the painting! I see you even beheaded one of these gryphon hounds for it. The only part I can not identify is the knight's head - a Sormcast Eternal's?

About your venture into the world of AoS: It's true that some of us are not exactly fond of AoS and the aesthetics of some/many of the new miniatures, and I'm probably the worst one here regarding this. But that does not mean that we don't appreciate clever conversions and great painting! I think I have stumbled across pictures of your warbands by accident (Tzeentch and some white/golden free people units?) - while I like your warhammer fantasy work more (naturally!), I remember liking your AoS miniatures as well. And if I can appreciate them, everyone else here will too. Feel free to showcase them in a new thread!  :icon_wink:

Thank you guys, always a pleasure to hear back from you!

Victor, well spotted on the gryph hound head on the helmet... I thought quite hard about it but in the end it seem to reinforce the griffon theme on the model which was the aim. The head is from the Stormcast Sequitor kit... I have to confess that I bought the set just for the spare heads as I find them really excellent sculpts and very suitable for my style of conversions.

Regarding AoS in general I have been really enjoying trying to make the bland setting more appealing by developing unexplored corners and getting he most out of the sketchy description of the Realms... I will post some of those works in here, if only to see how people will react to them eheheh

Most of the bitterness has passed, or at least most have accepted its a thing that exists, isn’t going away. The hobby ultimately can benefit from quality work regardless of source material!

Impressive. My guess for the bits:

Shins, helmet top, torso, arms: Demigryph kit

Sword: Pistoliers

Thighs: Goldswords

Shield: Empire knight

Shoulder pad: Imperial guard tank kit

Right hand, left hand, head: ???
