Post by: Atchman on January 01, 2004, 01:56:09 PM
Simon “Heimdall” Dent, has blessed us with an excellent article on how to use the Empire's only "Big Nasty".  It is an indepth article on how to equip, maneuver, and fight with a Griffon.  The article can be read here:

That's just a great article!

Very extensive and covering everything there is to know about Griffon-mania.

I have one question though. Does a failed charge by a flyer really mean it still has it's full movement and not half?
I've lended out my rulebook so I'm not sure and can't check for myself.

yes.

You always move full movement when failing a charge, even with swordsmen, you just don't move double you move, and flying things don't do this anyway.

great article, as I said in the other tread about it :D

I just got around to reading this - excellent work. Especially I like the multiple diagrams; certainly the best way to clearly explain what is going on.

I think I just might take the griffon out of the stable to stretch its wings a little more often now.

Not if you know what you are doing.  That is the entire point of the article.  I wouldn't even be afraid of a stupid DOW cannon, and if you are dumb enough to charge Chaos Knights.......

Surely charging chaos knights in the flank is OK if you have a runefang? Maybe easier said than done, but still...

Never charge alone if you can help it- after all, the EC + Griffon only has a Unit Strength of 5; you'll be outnumbered if you charge in alone.

After attending my first tournament, I would have to say that my EC/Griffon were far and away my army's MVP.  The griffon only perished in one game due to some very unfortunate rolling against the skaven, and proceeded not to take a scratch in the next two games-- BOTH AGAINST DWARFS!  (Yes, these were very typical dwarf armies too-- handgunners, cannons, bolththrowers, xbows, etc.) The way I see it is that you have 6 turns to make something happen with that unit, and I'm patient enough to wait out all of them to get that one decisive charge.

I've had the suckiest luck with mine at tourneys.  If  I get short of painting time before Baltimore, I may take Karl Franz and see what I can do with him and "Weed Eater" (my steamtank).

When I played against flying units it really sucked when this HighFly rule was in the 5th edition. Coming up with a flying monster anywhere on your tabletop really kicked ass, especially behind my artillery. "Owwww!!" :P
