Title: Warcry ...
Post by: GamesPoet on August 29, 2019, 10:15:20 AM
Looks like a fantasy skirmish game.

Saw the components of the starter set and they look like detailed figures.  Seems like a handful of extra warbands can be purchased, although they all seem to look like chaos forces.

Anyone play this yet?  And if yes, how's it going?

So no one has any experience with this yet? I've heard it might be a Mordheim like game, although only Chaos Warbands at the moment.  Scenery in the starter set looks good, and I like one of the Warbands that doesn't come in the starter set, can't recall the name.  I'll look it up.

For what its worth there are other warbands available, but not a complete set for all the factions. There's going to be (eventually) like a dozen different chaos tribes and Stormcasts, daughters of khaine, Deepkin, Nighthaunt, Fleshcourt ghouls, undead, Orcs, Gobo's and savage orcs. Likely more in the future as well.

I'm not sure I'd call it like Mordheim. More like Path to Glory or Necromunda. More gang warfare then exploration fighting, if that makes sense. The scenery looks amazing, and the models are super high quality, but I just have no interest in chaos models. A big part of this is expanding the background on the normal tribes and cults who follow chaos, instead of the rather generic ones, and that's great! I still don't want to play them.

As for the rules, a couple of my buddies have tried it and said its really good. I don't really no the difference between this and shadespire/underworlds, but it does seem really tactical. There's a lot of fights over getting the high ground, a lot of how you position models and which you use to do stuff. So it does look good, and I'll likely give it a try at some point.

Agree about Chaos. Models fantastic, theme no. The only good chaos is dead chaos. Preferably shot, burnt, pissed on and trampled by hundreds of noble horses.

The models for them really are fantastic, but sadly none of them really hook me. It's super impressive, and I have some fun ideas for various conversations, but frankly they're all ideas that are like "Hey it could be fun to make them like x...but I have a billion other ideas to work on first."

It's a bit like 40k's Killteam, played 2 games past Saturday with the core set. You got several stacks of cards to determine the scenario much like the cards for AoS Open play.
Models have fixed stats and warbands have a set of abilities you can use if you have double, triple or a quad from a set of 6 dice rolled at the start of a turn. While the amount of singles determine initiative.

It has warband specific for this but also other factions have "booster packs" with the cards for it. Even Stormcast with vanguard models.

Well here's a link to the Warcry stuff on GW'd site ... https://ageofsigmar.com/warcry/

Looks like currently 6 Chaos factions, 3 Order factions, 3 Death, and 3 Destruction.

Oh, and Becca Scott.  Not sure setting up a battle is what I have in mind for the coffee table. :icon_wink:

Back to being serious ... the game looks simple enough from the video.

Might get the starter set because of the terrain.  I like the Splintered Fang figures, and contemplating buying them.

Honestly I'm really considering the starter set for the terrain. That stuff looks like it would be great for Frostgrave, Kill Team or any other skirmish game.

wrong topic ;)

But I recall that there were some extra cards for models to use in the base game.. not sure if they can be found somewhere still
Nothing to implicate Gorechosen into Warcray though

Yeah, but thanks for the answer.
Those who got warcry, hows your experience so far?

Had a near shot at buying Warcry for $100 in the flea market area at Fall-In! 2019.  Unfortunately another guy picked it up before I put my hands on it, and right out from underneath my personal space as I was looking at it.  Felt like i was in a department store where ladies invade each other's personal space to get to the sale items before anyone else does.

Anyway, I'll keep my eyes open for another opportunity at some point, or maybe just buy it at retail cost.

Tried it.

It's a good game as an introduction to Wargaming, but the game is dictated by cards, and to the experienced gamer may be a bit too restrictive.
That said, I'm pitting a copy in the club for our youngsters.

A copy of the initial Warcry starter set has been purchased and received!  :icon_biggrin: :::cheers:::

I haven't had a free moment to open the box, and will wait for when I can sit down, relax, and indulge myself for a full exploration of its contents.

I'd been meaning to pick up a copy after missing out on the one I mentioned further back on the thread.  I noticed GW started selling a Warcry "starter collection" without miniatures for $149 (doesn't seem to have all the same scenery either).  And GW has increased the cost of the full starter set to $280 which really seemed nuts to me.  My "local" hobby store was still selling it for $170 which is 39% less than GW's current price, so it seemed like a no brainer to get a copy now before GW discontinues the full starter set with figures (who's going to buy it at $280?).

They are also selling three new scenery sets ...

(A.) The "Defiled Ruins", which is the same new set of scenery in the new "starter collection", and has the same nice looking terrain board.
(B.) The "Shattered Storm Vault", which seems like a ruined temple area which I like a lot, and a seemingly lack luster terrain board to me.
(C.) The "Souldrain Forest" which has six cool looking trees that I like a lot, plus ten rough/ruin pieces, and a decent looking terrain board.

The last of the three is $100, while the other two are at $90. They could be good for so many various fantasy gaming situations beyond Warcry.  At some point I might pick the Storm Vault or Forest sets.  But I digress.

Also, bought a set of the Splintered Fang warband.  These are some cool figures that I just had to have as an alternate warband for the game, plus they  might get used as a Greek like inspired warband from one of the Border Princes some day.  The latter if I ever get around to that as a priority in the hobby, but who knows.

And I got a bunch of new paints!  Cahcoo!  It was like Christmas getting these alone. :icon_mrgreen:

Artoban ... your copy of the starter set will be on its way to you when I find a box that is suitable for shipping it.  Looking again today, and will come up with one eventually.

Noticed today that the Chimera figure has sold out on line.  As have the Nighthaunt cards.  Hmmm ... and not that I wanted either.

The original Warbands were ... the two in the starter set called Iron Golem and Untamed Beasts, Splintered Fang, Corvus Cabal, Cypher Lords, and The Unmade.  These are all suppose to be Chaos groups.  Plus there was the Chaotic Beasts set.

Since then they have added the following figure sets ... Spire Tyrants (more Chaos), Gloomspite Gits (Goblins on Squigs), Nighthaunts (Undead), and the Stormcastcrud Eternals.

Apparently there are lots of card sets for other fantasy groups as well that the figures can be used from the various W:AoS lines that they sell.

Yup they've slowly been expanding it. Fyreslayer for example got rules in a white dwarf a month or two ago. A lot of the stuff sold out right now they've said is only temporarily out of stuck because of the pandemic, and then they'll be bringing it back. This is the complete list of factions with rules, but the rules are a bit spread out. Some have just cards, some are in rulebooks and expansions, and at least one is just in a white dwarf.

Iron Golems
Untamed Beasts
Splintered Fang
Corvus Cabal
The Unmade
Cypher Lords
Spire Tyrants
Scions of Flame
Khainite Shadowstalkers
Stormcast Eternals of various flavours.
Daughters of Khaine
Idoneth Deepkin
Kharadron Overlords
Fyreslayers
Sylvaneth
Seraphon
Legions of Nagash
Nighthaunt
Flesh-Eater Courts
Ossiarch Bonereapers
Ironjawz
Bonesplitterz
Gloomspite Gitz
Ogor Mawtribes
Slaves to Darkness
Beasts of Chaos
Skaven
Disciples of Tzeentch Daemons
Disciples of Tzeentch Arcanites
Maggotkin of Nurgle Daemons
Maggotkin of Nurgle Rotbringers
Blades of Khorne Daemons
Blades of Khorne Bloodbound
Hedonites of Slaanesh

The new wolf riders were for Shadespire/underworld. I know, its confusing, but its technically a different game.

And for GP, I popped over to a website that had compiled a master list of all the armies with rules. Like I said, its confusing itself because the rules are so spread out. Some cards were on sale in Britain, but not here yet because of the pandemic. Quite a few are in the campaign expansion books, the tomes of whatever, and some were in white dwarfs. Apparently they've said they'll be a book sometime this summer that centralizes everything and puts all the faction rules in one place, but who knows.

It is! They seem to be breaking it up into 'seasons'. So first we had Shadespire, then Night Vault, and now this current season is Beastgrave. If you've seen pictures of the new wild elf guys and centaur, or some beastmen, those are the current starter set.

Each season has a slightly different map based on a theme, and generally slightly different rules. From what I understand you can mix and match them as you want, so they're all compatible.

So after over two months of my Warcry starter set sitting on a bench in my hobby room, I finally found time to connect with Artoban over Zoom and we both opened up the boxes on the last day of the 100 Days of Hobby 2020 project thread.

Here are my initial impressions ...

1.  There are 7 large scenery sprues.  These alone are making this box worth picking up!  There are so many parts, and these can be made into items for mix and match to create different looks to the scenery.  There is an assembly booklet that seems quite useful for these scenery pieces, as well as for the figures.  However, make sure that you wash these dudes in a bin of soapy water.  I did, and there was definitely some grayish gunk coagulating in the soapy water after I pulled the sprues out for rinsing under a faucet.

2.  For the figures there are in essence 12 half sized sprues as follows.  The Chaotic Beasts are on 2 sets of the connected half sprues, and 2 half sprues.  Meanwhile, each of the humanoid factions has 1 connected sprue and 1 half sprue.  These figures are nicely detailed, and at second glance I noticed they will be a bit tricky to match the parts without using the instructions provided in the manual previously mentioned.  Although, think I'm going to enjoy these, and more than first thought that I would.  Both teams look like they are barbarians in nature.  One team would fit in nicely with a Khorne army, could even probably be used in a 40K Chaos army of some kind.  The other team might be used as allies in a Beastmen army, yet could just as easily be used in a Chaos army as Maurauders or whatever, too.  Both teams would make great figures for enemies of role playing characters as well.

3.  The game comes with a quick play set of rules and a Core rule book which looks awesome.  At first look, the latter item, besides having the rules, has three, maybe more, different styles of play.  Plus over 5 dozen different scenarios, most of which are looped together in sets of three for narrative play, match play, or whatever you might create on your own.  I have just barely scratched the surface of these, and looking forward to reading through them.  The scenarios are all with different terrain setups, and there are cards that look like a person can randomly determine what is going to happen on any given terrain scenario.  It all looks like plenty of ideas and help for players to have some great gaming sessions.  And I've got plenty of reading to do yet in this Core book.

4.  There is a double sided game board that covers 30" x 22".  It folds into quarters for easy storage in the box.  One side is of grays and greens with blue and black highlights, which is beginning to grow on me.  The other side is my favorite with it's tans and creams having red and black highlights.  Looking forward to getting the scenery pieces done first, and eventually using this double sided game board.  And by the way, the box that the game comes in seems well worth holding on to as a storage place for all the gaming material and figures, it is large and very sturdy.

5.  There also are 5 decks of cards (haven't opened them yet), a board of tokens, 3 sets of 6 dice (in tan, red, and black), seemingly just enough bases for the figures, 4 large plastic storage bags with 2 smaller bags as well, and a set of faction attribute cards.  Oh!  And a nifty little 12 inch measuring ruler that seems way better than those measuring sticks that the old WFB starter sets would have inside, but only one is included here.

So ... after all that ... I have started with the scenery sprues first.  My thought is these can be used with so many things and it does seem to be enough of a minor project to get this game up and moving in the correct direction for eventual completion.  I am liking the two humanoid factions that come with the starter set more, but I also bought a Splintered Fang set of figures and considering painting those up first, but we'll see.

Been taking a closer look at the seven scenery sprues this evening.

One thing I noticed is that these are definitely for fantasy use, and they could be used for sci-fi/40K as well.  The iconography has an Imperial/Empire/Sigmar theme to it.

2 of the sprues have walls with windows, and walls with the windows bricked over.  There are two items that seem can be formed for a low ruined wall piece, and also there is an item that can be used as a scatter ruin terrain piece. Oh, and one piece intended as a second level floor piece.

2 of the sprues have more wall pieces, although these have iron bars for windows and doors.  There are also some walls that have frames that can be walked through by figures, and these seem possible to insert them into some of the other walls.  And there are two different second level floor pieces, one small and one larger, the latter similar to the ones on the sprues mentioned above, except positioned in the opposite direction.  PLus two pieces of scatter terrain, one that seems to need some glue for the two parts.

1 sprue has bell tower with bell and various other parts like wooden ladders, stairs, wooden floors, and various skeletons.

Another sprue has a relatively large and multi part ruined sculpture, plus wooden steps, floor,  a sizeable piece of ruined scatter, and some wooden fence like structures.

And the last sprue has a pair of  wooden walkways that can be placed as second level bridges between structures, 7 more fence like structures that could be used as various scatter terrain as well, some of them having Chaos pieces, some with stone ruins.  And there are a few more skeletons.

- - -

Probably not tonight, need to do it when I am fresh, but looking forward to cutting these items from the sprues, beginning to glue some of it together, and see how the rest of them might be used interchangeably to create different set ups.

I'm also contemplating priming them with a cream colored/off-white look and then using lots of wash, light or dark brown, maybe with some dry brushed highlights.  There is a lot of scenery items here, and I want to give most of it a similar look.  Also, it is my sense that figures will stand out decently against this coloring idea rather than using some sort of gray as the primary color.

This morning I took a second and closer look at the Warycry rules.  At first I got curious about all the terrain set ups shown in the back of the book.  However, after having begun reading the fluff in the new 40K 9th edition full sized rule book, opened up the Warcry riules from the beginning, and started there.  The fluff up front has quite the bleak story to it all, and lots of Chaos since the Warcry story seems to be based on some sort of world that was once human, but now taken over by Chaos.

Eventually I turned through the rest of the booklet, it is soft back and not even close to the size of the 40K hardback.  The rules seem interesting and different in tactical make up and I am looking forward to seeing how these play out on the table top at some point.  There are also 3 kinds of play guidelines, which seems to be the direction GW has been taking recently ... open, matched, narrative.  It seems they have also made a good effort at providing cards and narrative ideas for lots of different scenarios which can be random or taken from the back of the book.  It looks like there are also rules for varying warband size and items being carried by the leaders or some such.  There are also other rules that seem to allow for mixing in some character to the warbands as well.

Probably 1st priority needs to be getting the scenery completed, than at least two warbands, plus need to more thoroughly read the rules section of the booklet at some point.  Who knows when all that will happen with my tendency to move around from one project to the next, although this does have a sort of calling to me at the moment, but we'll see ... lol.

Well, I'm working on my terrain. So when the "lock-down" is over, I can start playing it again.
It didn't seem to work for us with Zoom.
And we just played some stand alone games, to learn the rules.

Interesting that you had an issue using Zoom, and wondering what the complication was :icon_question:

- - -

The humidity cleared up the other day, and I laid out some brown paper to prime the terrain.  Then I remembered that I'll need to cut from the sprues and glue first if I am going to avoid having to prime the spots where the pieces get cut from the sprues.  So no progress until I figure out what I am going to do for glueing.

However, started reading the core rules section of the Warcry booklet yesterday.  It does seem like a different set of rules, and it seems to take into account figures being on different levels of the terrain, plus besides regular moves it has provisions for jumping, climbing, and flying.  Still more for me to read though before being able to play.  And then there are of course getting the figures ready eventually.

Here's a video showing the terrain configurations in 360 degree views, and needed for the Terrain Cards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2GF9RSrID0

My understanding is that some of these don't need to be completely glued together in order to create these configurations and still be able to create others, and that is what I'll be aiming to do.  I imagine that as long as the terrain pieces are in L shapes, then they can easily be used to create many different configurations for things beyond what is being used on the Terrain Cards.

Here is another video on Warcry terrain ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQSaPvCS-Mo

I fast forwarded through some of it at the beginning, but the last 2/3rd shows how keeping some of the items unglued will enable a person to create the terrain pieces used on the cards and setup suggestions, while at the same time making the terrain set more variable for your own creations as well as the ideas that have been provided.

By the way, the colors used here is closer to what I'm looking to do than the typical gray coloring schemes I've seen in so many places.  I'm not thrilled with the red coloring that has been used in under the covered areas.

Here's a video on how to simply paint the Warcry terrain ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpNbL0c7bf4

The terrain in this video is actually from one of GW's other three terrain sets for Warcry and not from the starter box set, although the painting techniques seem like something that can easily be used with the starter set terrain.

I don't mind the look the guy got with the colors that he uses, but I'm not really thrilled with the ruddy red color he uses first and then the orangish color is a bit more than I want as well.  I'm seeking more of a brown to cream color.

Here are some terrain painting techniques as well ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Pkg3XcO8Z8

I liked the greenish undertone look on top of the initial black or brown primer.  However I'm not interested in having such a light gray look, but perhaps the greenish idea under the brownish to cream color that I'm wanting to do could also work nicely.

The starter set comes with the Iron Golems and the Untamed, and a band of Chaos creatures too.

This video has me considering picking up the Corvus Cabal at some point. :icon_mrgreen:

I'm curious on how you end building and painting this stuff... I really like the terrain also, but not currently into AoS at the moment so my focus is on 40k and getting terrain done for that as soon as I get to plan that in besides doing my armies

Have decided this morning that I need to finish getting my wordpress website asap, and begin using it as a place for hobby photos.  Then I can really get this project moving along from a glueing and painting perspective.  The Warcry game system and fluff is set in the W:AoS world, but it seems to be enough of a different game for me to not care, despite my low interest in W:AoS.

For 40K, Got out my Orks, I've read the core rules that seem straight forward, and dabbling in reading the hardback core rules, although currently slogging through the frontal fluff sections.  I'm contemplating painting some of my older space marines to have two forces available for giving the rules an eventual go.

With any of this, including Warcry, I'd be able to go to a hobby store and get in a game, but with Covid 19, yesterday's trip into a hobby store for the first time in 6 months, and there wasn't a soul around except the employee and one dude rooting through his magic cards.  I have been enjoying the read of Warcry rules though, and looking forward to moving this project along.

Snipped some more pieces of the terrain from the Warcry sprues.

Also, opened up the instruction booklet and it isn't really fully clear as to constructing these terrain pieces.

Glad I picked up on the idea that what is shown reflects the terrain construction used on the cards.  I'm beginning to see that there could be ways of constructing the terrain so that both the cards and one's own experiments and imagination could both come into play when building the terrain.  I'm thinking the more I can make this terrain modular, the better, but it does seem as if I'm going to need to think it all through so that I can also make both my own terrain as well as the shown on the cards for the narrative and game play. :icon_idea:

I'm going to go slow, not rush this process, and construct before priming as well :icon_exclaim:

maybe also magnetizing stuff so when you are building it up with those modular pieces it won't get knocked off so easily.

Bad me.  Was out and about today, and stopped into a favorite local shop to pick up the set of Corvus Cabal figures.

With the Iron Golems, Untamed Beasts, Splintered Fang, and Corvus Cabal I now have 4 warbands for this game.  The rules have been read, I'v started constructing the terrain, and at some point I may construct the figures as well.  Might even start playing before everything gets painted, alhtough if I can come up with simple paint schemes, then I will wait a bit longer until I can get two bands painted.  I'll probably do the Iron Golems and the Splintered Fang first.

By the way ... previously I wrote of there being open play, matched play, and narrative play, although didn't learn until I read in detail about these, and there are actually two ways for the matched play ... Coalition of Death where it is 2 warbands/players vs. 2 warbands/players and there is Triumph & Treachery where it is four warbands on the table top with everyone out for themselves.

However, I just want to get in a game of open play using the rules and see how they go, plus perhaps get in some narrative play at some point as well.  If I can keep from being too overly distracted by all my other hobby interests, maybe this can happen by Xmas.  Then again there's all those 28mm Wars of the Roses figures that need painting, so maybe ... lol.

I'm really not interested in having purple looking scenery like this though, and definitely not the Warcry scenery.

Its an interesting colour scheme, very pretty, but I don't think it fits with any of my lore places. Could be good for a different planet or more chaos enthused realm!

Almost pulled the plug on buying the Warcry Sigmar eternal crud warband yesterday.  Almost.

Also, gave up looking for my magnets.  They will turn up at some point, I'm sure, and when I least expect them of course.

However, picked up some more magnets, and it looks like some of these new ones are smaller and can be used for a new idea that I have.  When I get around to doing up an initial warband, probably the Splintered Fangs first, I'm thinking of magnetizing some of the arms and bodies to be able to swap things around for different warband builds.  Suspect this could be the situation for some of the other warbands as well, and looking forward to doing the Iron Golems.

Additionally, seriously contemplating not doing any of these figures in the usual colors that I'm seeing, which are mostly similar to what is provided on the boxes.  And I wasn't really thrilled with the  color schemes shown in the campaign article that is included with White Dwarf 456.  The Unmade looks the best of the four warbands that are shown in that event.

For my Splintered Fang, this war band reminds me of ancient Greeks, and so I am contemplating Red/Gold/Black combo, including for the snakes.  The large snake on the Serpent caller I am imagining as being like the Eastern Coral Snake.

For my Iron Golems ... I'm contemplating black and white for Malal.  But might go with the blue for Tzeentch.

For the Corvus Cabal ... might go with black and yellow ... for some sort of an evil cult, maybe even in Averland.

For the Untamed Beasts ... very much undecided, and not finding anything inspirational about them nor for them yet.  Perhaps I will go back and reread them, and hopefully something will click.  If not, I may just let someone else have a go at them.

As I continued to contemplate colors for my Warcry warbands, I have decided yellow is definitely going to be the main color for my Corvus Cabal, and with some black, although the yellow will be predominate.

Then I can use these figures for my yellow hooded cloak criminals that exist in my Tilean city of Silgrog on the coast south of Tobaro, mostly for roleplaying with nephews.

Ha!  Well the birds they carry will be black, as will the feathers they wear.

Interestingly, most of the figures are wearing pants, except for the one's that could be interpreted to be women and wearing garments to cover their chests.  Even the Shadow Piercer could be a woman, although some might challenge that idea.

Regardless, it would be nice to have more of them with hoods, yet looks like just the Piercer and the Shrike Talon.  Perhaps I will green stuff some of them having such, but will see.  So pants will be yellow, maybe a few other items, like hair ties.

What's wrong with punk goldfinches?

Real talk tho, those models look good in almost any scheme. My local GW manager painted them in bright green and blue like parrots and they're still sharp as hell.

Instead ... picked up the Warcry cards for Skaven, because already have models for some of these.

Found some magnets!  I can get cracking on the Warcry scenery again.

Need to review how these pieces go together, and then start creating, followed by spray painting before installing magnets.  Plus need to determine how the magnets will get installed, too.

Picked up some new drill bits for using with the magnets.  I had some small ones for things like holes in hands, or pinning parts together, but nothing big enough for the magnets that I have.  Got to set aside some time to review how all these scenery parts go together, and start using my pin drill to make some holes for the magnets.

Meanwhile ... I also came across another Warcry scenery painting video ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAkaeerpVDY

This seemed to come out a bit too grey for my liking, I'm going with more of a sandstone approach to the color, and wasn't thrilled with the blue bricks, I might go with red or just keep them sandstone as well, although watching this for the techniques being used was a helpful review of items shown in other videos further back on this thread.

With Artoban proceeding on his Warcry figures, my interest in this projects has been increasing.

I have my Warcry box opened up in the hobby room.  All the plastic sprues have been previously dunked in soap and water, and most of the scenery sprues have their parts clipped and mold lines removed.  The smaller scenery bits are all out on the spray painting table, probably half of them, the parts that were only wood, were spray primed a medium brown last week when the weather was good.  After reviewing what remains od the scenery parts, I could have gotten away with priming a few of the others that have wood components, but at the time couldn't decide how I was going to go with them, which was kind of dumb on second thought, because this morning it was so obvious how to proceed with the rest.  Weather is expected to be good on Thursday again, so priming will hopefully resume.

I pulled out the figure sprues last week for the Corvus Cabal, and still need to decide what color I will prime them.  Just took a look this morning at the chaos creature sprues ... they don't look like a bad glue job, and might go together relatively quickly compared to some efforts with sprues in the past.  And then there are my sprues for the Splintered Fang, Iron Golem, and Untamed Beasts warbands ...  :icon_lol:

After doing some painting flesh onto WotRs 28mm Perry figures, I then turned to my Corvus Cabal warband to see what might be glued together.  A closer look at the sprues shows a confusing mish mash of parts, and although they are numbered I couldn't figure out what was what just yet.  :icon_rolleyes:

So ... I started with the Shrike Talon because the parts seemed obvious.  First the two wings then the right and left shoulders which also from the head, but then I couldn't find the head.  That was weird.  I looked again over each of the three sprues and still couldn't figure it out.  Then I snipped the legs and put the right leg on, and then discovered that the head was attached to the left leg via a left side, which of course was totally wacked, and I couldn't fit the head through the holes where it would be expected to be placed.  Thus I had to take off the two shoulders, which had already been super glued, and thank goodness I didn't try using a faster super glue on these.  Then I was able to fit the head and left side and left leg on the figure.  However, some of the plastic is relatively thin, easily breakable, and I decided to let the figure sit overnight so the glue could set as is, and then I can put the two shoulders and hood in place next. :icon_cool:

This is not an impressive start to making these figures.  Plus I'm already aware that their are limited options for a warband due to the way these figures have been molded. It probably makes sense to look up how much these cost in points to make a warband and determine how I'm going to get these together to match what I want to have for the warband.  And that means I might not be making the rest of these figures until this is determined.

I'm hoping the Iron Golems and Chaos Beasts, Splintered Fang and Untamed Beasts, are easier than what these Corvus Cabal figures are turning out to be.

I found the same thing when assembling the new Sisters of Battle squads, it was the first time I have EVER had to follow instructions to build a GW infantry unit. The new models are really cool, but they tend to have a lot less freedom of choice than our old favourites, limited to maybe a different weapon/ pair of arms and a choice of heads. Sometimes they do seem to have to be constructed in a very particular order or else you can't fit some bits in! Luckily I only blu-tacked mine so no need to pick apart any glue :engel:

I'm also dreading building my Necromunda Van Saars... the sprues are PACKED with lots of tiny bits that I fear need to be placed very precisely at a very specific time!

Strange indeed, they should normally all have a leaflet with the instructions and basic squad/unit profile...

You might be able to find a PDF or something online maybe? Otherwise you'll just have to wing it! (pun absolutely intended).

The saga continues ... moments ago I discovered that the right side of the piece that has the hood is suppose to go on the wings before the body.  Oh, I was not impressed.  However, I was able to pry the left hand side of the body away from the back piece, and slightly bend the right arm at the wrist, the latter avoiding breakage where it is glued there, but I have put the whole figure down to obtain some more patience and relaxation for further gluing the figure together.  This is not fun, although I will prevail.

It is my plan that I will piece together all the remaining parts of these figures before any further gluing.  And after determining how I will arm them because of the how the points are determined for picking a 1,000 point Warcry warband.

I started this last night because my sense was here are a bunch of guys that can go quickly together, and I can get them ready to paint, which would give me my first Warcry warband, and some figures for the evil roleplaying minions that I have in operation already, and in advance of this summer's RPGing with the nephews.  Evidently it isn't going to be as easy as first expected.

I'll blame it on how wonderfully Artoban is painting is Warcry figures. :icon_wink: :engel:

Weird there were no instructions. Building is the least fun I find but you have to follow the instructions and the order. The Squig set nearly sent me off the deep end as I was trying to put together different parts. Crazy.
I se instructions on all things now as the conversion element seems to have been clipped a bit

I agree with this, it seems like you really have to go above and beyond to achieve any good conversions now, instead of getting hold of the odd bit here and there it seems you now need to get the odd MODEL here or there, or a massive component that you need to dissect for the bit you want. More often than not anyway.

Anyway, good luck with the Cabal GP, I recommend dry-fitting with blu-tac before going on with the glue! :::cheers:::

Yep, it's like who ever packed the box forgot to include them, because I can't see them just not printing instructions for them.  It is definitely a pain.

Time is way too valuable to be fiddling with these.  It's bad enough I have to be gentle in clipping the bits off the sprues, and then clean the left over connecting plastic, and then glue them.

Oh, you meant clipping the art of conversion.  Yep, that sucks too.

Then again suppose the bits dealers will just adapt.

I'm just planning to lay the parts out as I determined which ones go together, but this really is an extra step, and a pain in the brain.

I tried a google search to no avail, but there was a Reddit post where somebody had the same issue and the answer given was just to email GW Customer Services for a PDF version, if you can be bothered mind you!

Either that or no doubt there's plenty of things on YouTube these days for unboxing so I reckon somebody has done a build tutorial perhaps?
Title: Re: Warcry ...
Post by: GamesPoet on March 31, 2021, 01:25:40 AM
The idea that I would email GW for an instruction sheet, well, I'll put this way, that isn't why I buy a figure.

This experience is really not been a good one.  Tonight I went back to the figure.  Discovered my understanding of the putting the parts together was different than I recalled from this morning.  I won't go into the detail, but suffice it to say, in the process of gluing the two halves of the hood onto the head/back broke off the right arm at the wrist, and accidentally snapped the right hood tie that is so thin, I'm surprised I didn't do it the first time when having and issue last night.  And now I have put the figure to one side to let the glue set before attempting to finish its construction further.

I have mixed emotions about this.  The sculpt is detailed and it looks good, and I suspect I can hide the issue with the breaks, worse case snap the other tie so they look similar, not sure how to glue such a thin piece back to a thin piece.  But I am now a bit irritated thinking on how I am going to paint this thing too, due to the detail associated with it.  I didn't buy this thing to spend eons on the detail, so finding a simple way to do the trick is going to be a goal, and yet this will lengthen the process of completion for a guy who just wants to paint it decently, and get it on the table.

My question immediately is what is the purpose behind complicating the figure?  Come on GW, there's got to be an easier way than creating it as it has been done.

I'm eyeing those Perry brother figures for Wars of the Roses.  Made over 130 of them last year alone, and although there are more to do, there's no way I'd make an army out of figures sculpted and molded like this Shrike Talon.  Of course I'm sure that isn't GW's purpose for the Shrike Talon ... lol.

It is discouraging me from purchasing a another box of these dudes to have more options for my Corvus Cabal warband.  I'm going to keep moving along on this project, but it isn't even encouraging me to want to buy The Cursed City box if any of the sculpted figures are going to be like this.  Hope I can find a way to be able to make my Cabalists in the warband capable of being adapted via magnets for weapons, so that I can change up the figures a bit if desired, but that will lengthen the project as well.

Uh boy. :icon_rolleyes:

So I tried some google searches, and nothing popped up for how to complete these figures.

However, I did find this ... https://www.forbiddengaming.co.uk/corvus-cabal-shrike-talon-14370-p.asp

It shows that a bits dealer is already selling these figures singly.  And it reminded me of the foot claws that need to be glued as well.

Haven't touched my Warcry figures nor returned to scenery pieces in a few months.  I got a bunch of the scenery laid out on a piece of cardboard for priming, and really need to return to this project.  The figures ... my frustration with putting those ones I had together without having the instruction sheets has slowed me down, and at some point need to get back to that as well.

Anyway, in the meantime, here is a video of someone who created a magnitized board for his Warcry gaming pleasure ...
