Hi Folks,
I'm still relatively new to Warhammer and Warhammer-Empire. I was very glad to find this community where many talented modelers, painters, and strategists share their work. I would like to thank everyone that posts pictures of their projects, it is great fun and an inspiration to see what people are working on.
Here is my current project:
I am working on a Wissenland themed army on crusade in Araby. Ive got some spearmen and a couple of knights done for now, I'll keep the blog updated as often as I can,
Comments and advice are always welcome!

The black and white standard and black/ white shields were inspired by some of Gabrionus's knights, which in my opinion are brilliant: (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=28199.0)

It would be very helpful to me if someone could offer advice about how to paint a more crisp Maltese Cross on this knights shoulder pad:

It would be very helpful to me if someone could offer advice about how to paint a more crisp Maltese Cross on this knights shoulder pad:
Get one of those finetipped micron pens and outline the cross with black, it will pop more and look crisper. :-)
-
Looking pretty good so far, I like the unit of knights. I'd try to get some variation into the bases though, you might want to try some off-colored rocks or a few patches of grass to make them more interesting. It would also help to brush the sand a bit with a lighter color to give it more texture. For that you might want to start with a darker base color though.
-
Hey man welcome first of all....Second the army is looking good keep posting as you finish models ..this sight is great source if inspiration to me and it will help you as well..... :::cheers:::

I was going to suggest painting over the 40k decals, but your freehand is excellent. So I'd go with above suggestion!
Great stuff, I like your use of the bretonnina knights, but also your version of the red and white armour. I'd break up the handgunner's grey though- maybe make his torso black or something. Right now he's very grey.
Keep posting!

Here is the latest update, still very WIP, I wish I had more time to paint
I imagine that crusading armies would cary a great deal of flags, standards, banners, etc. I am building a unit of 5 knights who will all be carrying flags to represent this idea. Ironically I plan on fielding the unit without a standard bearer:

Nice banners! The barding on the horses is absolutely stunning.
You could try to thin your paints a bit though for banner application- right now it seems a bit thick.
-
Some good creative stuff here. Particularly like the barding with the yellow having red and white on the edges.
:icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::

Yes thank you for that advice Obi, I think I will try thinning my paints down from now on. I have feared doing it, thinking it would take far longer to paint, but it will be worth a cleaner and thinner look. The strange thing is, the pictures make paint look so much thicker and more messy. On the models it doesn't look too problematic, but maybe that's because I'm looking from so far away.
-
I like the idea from you. Just as Obi said always thin down the paints! :eusa_clap:
As fore the different types of banners really nice perhaps have a look at some nice movies to do some inspiration. :smile2:

A long overdue unit of five knights, I am working on the grandmaster, and there are 4 more undercoated ones that I probably wont get to until late spring:
Their shoulder shields have been simplified, I'm thinking about just adding a black Greek cross to all of them, simple and clean.
and, the banner knights which i have posted in, show us ...your banners:

Cool knights especially the Maltese ones :::cheers::: I have to do something like that some time but I am waiting for some new Empire knight kits to come out first.
-
the banner unit may be OTT

My first attempts at a wissenland banner, I'm happy with the result. I'm still learning how to thin down paints, I suspect I have more to learn...

thanks for sharing the WIP pictures as well
-
That new banner is looking quite good. Just on a second look though I would advise adding some dusty effects to the bottom of the barding on your first knights.
-
I like the banner, and it was neat to see how you did it. Thank you! :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool: :::cheers:::
-
There is somthing fantastic about this army concept. I will follow this. Good job, I love the knights. :-)
-
Really good job on the banners! Your free hand looks amazing. The variety in the banners adds a good deal of character to the units
-
I didn't see the first unit of knights before. Really like the way you did them. They are not too fussy but look really mean and also... vibrant in a good way.
Your banner painting is impressive. 8-)
-
Thank you everyone for the supportive comments. The knights have changed just a little bit, with black crosses now instead of red. As for banners, I had a lot of fun painting that one, I'm now planning how to include more and more in my army. I'm particularly fond of this idea: Have a Nuln Gunnery School Banner set up behind the cannons, maybe as a turn counter, but mostly as an excuse to paint a cool banner that otherwise might not make it into this army.
-
I like the idea of making a banner for a turn counter. Keep in mind, with any luck the new WFB edition might include the use of objectives, and I suspect banners could work quite nicely for this, too. :icon_cool:
-
Awesome banner! Quite good for freehand work. Are you going to use the griffon in the crown on the other side?
-
Good work. Keep it up.
-
Thank you!
@ wissenlander, Yeah I am planning on the red griffon in the crown for the back. Although, the front side was very do-able because the checkers provided a nice frame of reference, for where all the bends in the lion should go. The yellow back doesn't have that sort of reference, so I am wondering if the griffon will look as good as the lion.
-
I'd like to be able to help in that regard, but I have no pointers outside of trying to draw it on first with something instead of painting. How that would occur, I have no idea. But presumably you'd have better control drawing then painting I'd imagine? Perhaps someone else can give you some advice on freehand banners?
-
I tend to draw with a pencil on the undercoat (white or light grey undercoat), block in the colours and then go over the drawing lines in black (if required).
-
The latest update:
A new flag. You will notice it is the same castle motif as in the corner of the old Wissenland flag above. I am planning on writting "Antiocha (or Antiochia) Invicta" in the scrolls. I have decided on some good crusading fluff: My army are Wissenlanders who settled in Upper Araby, on the very coast. Their city is Antiocha (or Antiochia, haven't decided yet,) and they call their province 'Imperial Upper Araby'.
Hand-gunners painted for last months goal. I realized that I hate painting the same scheme over and over again, so I followed in the footsteps of Zerotwentythree (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=20815.75) and Wulf, (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139535&page=6) and made each one of the gunners a bit different. I did however maintain a pretty narrow palate.

A WIP knight horse:

Finally, some magic, both still WIP:
-
These are just some flag concepts I have been playing with in paint, they would probably work well for Averland as well. Currently I am not planning on putting any of these on the reverses of my to WIP flags, but in the future maybe.:
-
I'm beginning to like how you are developing the fluff, and it is gutsy to share the beginnings of such things as you develop them. Can't say I do the same.
On the three flag concepts ... I like the bottom right one the most because it includes the keep on the blue field, except it might need something else on the yellow field.
-
The army as it stand now:
The new formation for my handgunners, since we can now shoot in two rows. Thank you edition 8.
My Captasus, inspired by Markw's excellent captain from his Averland army. (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=31224.0)
And a larger picture of the front. The flag is a slightly modified version of the Wissenland banners from the Uniforms & Heraldry of the Empire book,
(http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/ae217/arselus/Wissenlanders/DSC06458.jpg)
-
Finally, two close ups of the flag. On the reverse it says "Antiochia Invicta" = "Antioch Unconquered" So for my lore, I have decided that these Wissenlanders have settled in a city in Araby called Antioch. I have read, on a recent thread about Imperial colonies, that there happens to be a Bretonnian colony called Antoch. I haven't decided whether my Wissenlanders are peacefully co-existing with their Breton neighbors in Antoch, (disagreeing perhaps only on spelling,) or whether this is a different Antioch all together. If anyone is familiar with the naming of cities 'Antioch,' the second alternative is viable. As 'Antioch' was a name given to several cities. It derives from the Seleucid emperors (as there were several with the same name) 'Antiochus.'

wow looks good man!! :::cheers:::
-
Thanks zak.
Also, I've been thinking, with the new allied contingents rule, it might make sense to include some bretonnians yeah?
-
Just dropping a post so I can watch the good stuff in the future. :eusa_clap:

Same, always good to support my fellow Wissenlanders, someone's gotta protect the home front while you're off on crusade.
Keep up the good work for the Empire's best province and expand our influence worldwide. :::cheers:::

What a beautiful freehand.

Holy crap I wish I could paint like that! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:

Here is an update with the halberdier horde I am working on:

Looks good. Shouldn't ypur ogres be wielding massive halberds? :)
-
Haha, yes, great point von Bildhofen. I thought about that after their pants were painted, so I decided against it for the time being.
-
I decided after all to equip the ogres with halberds. So here is the first finished one. The shield idea I got from a photo in the 8th edition rulebook, page 285 or 6 I think:

As a fellow Wissenlander, I just love your post! I especially love your ogre...I did the same type of conversion to flesh out my second rank of ironguts in my OK allied army. Also planning on using Brets!
Keep the good stuff coming :icon_biggrin:!!

Here are some things I have been working on. I have really started liking the red and yellow combination that I had on my old Wissenland flag. Hence, I have decided to carry the theme throughout the army. In terms of fluff, I am thinking that since these Wissenlanders are living in Araby, they left Wissenland long ago, and they are carrying an old Wissenland flag. (http://warhammer-empire.com/library/aisforaltdorf/the-grand-county-of-wissenland/) (Since the newer flag is red with a white lion.) This is how I am justifying using reds and yellows in Wissenland army.
Pistolier horses:

Champion's horse for the white Reiksguard knights:
First 5 swordsmen from the detachment to the halberdier horde. I have decided to carry the checkerboard theme that is on the halberdier flag, but to translate it into white/ red for the detachment:

Thiss is a beautiful thread. Infact, I think I'm going to go get some knights.
Where did you get the ehads for the red knights with greatswords?
-
Like it very much
-
very cool :::cheers:::
-
Great work !!! keep going.
The dude with the like-Greek flag is my favourite, him and the last knight unit.
Also a kinda silly question : What does WIP means. I see it all the time and don t get it
-
"work in progress"
-
Thanks very much for the kind comments everyone!
Where did you get the ehads for the red knights with greatswords?
Those knight heads are from the Bretonnian Knights of the Realm/ Knights Errant current plastic boxed set. I just cut the various animals off of the top, and cut off some ribbons, to make them look more like Templars.
-
After a long (~1year+?) hiatus from Warhammer, I am back to work on my army. And it is exciting. Since this is a plog, I hope you can excuse the threadomancy:
The walter is under way. And I have abandoned the sphinx portion:

Now I am excited too.....
Cant wait to see that finished. Looks good so far :::cheers:::
And...I like the army, the theme and everything. Very nice conversions. :eusa_clap:
-
That is a sweet war altar - really big and bulky!
-
Very nice I like it
-
 ooooh!! looks good so far!!
-
Nice, where are the parts coming from?
-
Looks like screaming bell bottom ogre bulls pulling it and some. Familiers (?) or animal sprites(?) from. Dryad box .
Sweet work as well Barry as we say in s1 love knights and walter
-

If you are talking about the little Gryphons, those are from the Fortified Manorhouse, Watchtower, and Chapel kits. I also see Space Marine purity seals, modular movement trays, various books and scrolls from Flagellants kit, Laurels from the Greatswords, old style shields, I'm guessing those standards are Vampire Counts, and some other small bits I'm not sure on like the side banners. I believe the icon on the side that is cross with a skull in it is a Terminator Honour, but I'm not positive.
-
Thanks for all the good words everybody. Delthos has nailed almost all of the bits (glad that you saw the movement trays). The emperor got the screaming bell bottom. The banners are from chaos warriors. Man, it was fun reading that bit guessing game, so here are some more to guess:

Yes, the standard bearer is really eye-catching. :eusa_clap:

Thanks for the compliments! Any criticism/ tips on how to thin paints are welcome. In pictures I start noticing that my paints are still really thick. Here some new stuff:

wow, nice work. Im really liking the barding on the pistoliers. :eusa_clap:
-
Looking great.
I really like the idea of detailing your waralter with tons and tons of stuff, most war-altars end up looking a little under-detailed for my taste, yours seem certainly to steer well clear of that problem =)
If you are interested you should know that you can get cake-pillars that work well as greek-marble pillars for scale for your golden griffon.
I kinda hope the mushroom unitfiller is a joke? It seems a bit ad odds with the rest of your great swords, whom btw,. look awesome with their converted helmets.
I like the idea of a knight as unitfiller in the halbardiers, very invocative and makes fora more interesting unit =)

Most wizards that I've met have been high on mushrooms like that.

Very nice ..........

A small update on the war alter. My biggest worry with the new release was that I would like the new alter more than the one that I have been building. Well, the new girffon is great, but I prefer my old base to the new one:

Just a close up of the base, I think this is my favorite base that I have made

Hey, nice to see this blog back in action! As been said, that BsB guy looks really nice! Really like the banner.
That base lookking very nice as well.
:::cheers:::

now thats how a war alter should look!
not the tiny-chariot like old one, or the double decker bus of a new one.
but best of all, is GW legal!

Thanks guys! It is coming along, a little bit each day. The top portion will be painted separately. As will the griffon, flags and Arch-Lector.

Great blog :eusa_clap:
I just noticed when you were painting the Waltar, Do you undercoat your parts :icon_confused:??????
It looks like you dont as i saw some parts still bare plastic when the rest was painted.
Still a very nice looking army and great fluff...... LOVE it :::cheers:::
-
Thanks kindly.
I do undercoat, but I undercoat with gray: http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=35372.msg551644#msg551644
Also the walter was painted in three different stages and then assembled. That's why some parts are gray most likely. (I just set them on one another to mock up for photos)

Looks great! How did you do your bronze colors, like on the griffon and the knights of the blazing sun? and what are their helmets?
keep it up, looking forward to more!

I think the helmets are from 40k sanguinary guard, though I could be wrong.
