I thought there was a thread for this, but can't find.
Anyone been watching Deutschland 83?
I really enjoyed it but read the ratings in Germany were poor. If they do a second series it would be deutschland 86.
Then, fantasising, a Deutschland 89 about the wall coming down could be cool.
The Wife and I also watched and enjoyed The Man in the High Castle.
Started Mr Robot but stopped after about 4 episodes.
Better Call Saul starts again on tuesday. I liked it as much as Breaking Bad, can't wait.
-
I like watching House of Lies.
-
Watching all of the X-Files. Currently on the season 6. This is truly the best show ever made.
-
watching Scorpion every Sunday 2 new (at least here they are new) episodes on Sunday evening.
-

I watched the first of the new series last week. It was a bit meh to be honest.
My nightly feature is star trek on cbs action - currently deep space nine. I have to say it's a great show, shame that star trek died a death, would love to see a ds9 revival.

+1. As much as I like TNG, DS9 has the best characters* and the best storylines.
* except Seven of Nine, of course.
-
If we are talking old shows, I enjoyed SGU.
-
I'm watching the original "House of Cards" again. An amazing show.
-
Currently watching last season of Downton Abbey, and other PBS programs if interesting as they come along. Beyond that, not much of a TV watcher, other than occasional news program or sport event.
-
How is Downton Abbey my Amazon keeps thinking I might like it but Im unsure? What type of show is it? My professor likes it but shes like 75 although we share similar interests. I always got the impression it was a womans show but I could be wrong. The shows/Miniseries that I like/ have liked were
Rome
Deadwood
Spartacus
Hell on wheels
Outlander ( I find the amount of rape off putting though)
Black Sails
GoT
Peaky Blinders
The Borgias
Wolf Hall
I Claudius ( Im not sure if it counts)
Boardwalk Empire
Pillars of the Earth
Band of Brothers
The Pacific
War and Peace (I just finished it and it was pretty good)
-
My wife enjoys downtown Abbey; I guess I would think of it as a woman's show therefore. It's a period drama, although I would say considerably more amusing/entertaining for me than the likes of pride and prejudice Tec
-
My whole family likes it. It's a period drama and a fair portion of it tends to be about the various relationships of the characters, but there's lots about the aristocracy and servants having to change with the times, or going through the 1st world war.
-
Gogglebox ftw!
-
I hate Gogglebox.
Downtown abbey is a woman's show.
It's a soap opera.
That's my Monday morning snobbery quota sorted.
-
Depends on how one defines it as being a "woman's" show or a "soap opera".
From my perspective, neither is an accurate reflection of the program. It is a fictional story wrapped in a real world time period of history, which attempts to include the aspects of English society at the time. It is about family, class, the adaption of such to the changing times. In a way it is historical fiction.

Isn't it just Upstairs, Downstairs in the country?
-
Monday nights are the best. Star trek deep space nine followed by the new x files. X files episode three was finally back on form - had the chap from flight of the concords in and was genuinely quite funny. Plus a seduction scene by Gillian Anderson that will appeal to every man who watched the show as a teenager.
-
I enjoyed the first four seasons of Downton Abbey, although I watched it with my wife while I painted models.
Right now I'm watching Ash vs. the Evil Dead. Good stuff!
-
I guess I can give Downton Abbey a try even if it is a womans show. Ive done enough macho things so I dont think watching it will damage my street cred too much :-D
-
So I was wondering if anyone was watching a hip Spy thriller, with good 80s music and funny 80s fashion, and it slips to Downton abbey.
You win some, you lose some.

Don't scowl, Jean-Luc. Because one other Star Trek fact benefits you: bald captains are the best captains.
You started out that way. Sisko only turned into a supreme badass once he got rid of his hair and grew the goatee instead.
-
If worf gets his own command/show he'd better get shaved!
-
To all the X-philes here, how is the 10th season overall? I'm watching all the old ones like crazy, but have heard that the new one is a mixed bag. True or false?
-
I liked Revenge. I think that's classified as a Woman's show.
-

I've seen the first three episodes. The first was fairly awful, but the second and third were quite good!
-

If it's the one I'm thinking of (?Elizabeth Clarke, dad went to prison for blowing up a plane he didnt do or something) my wife watched it (and by default so did I) and it was quite good up until the last series and I think the reason was that they thought they were going to get cancelled, wrapped it up nicely and then got green-lighted another series and it felt a little tacked-on.
Anyone here watch Broklyn nine-nine? I love that show. Captain Holt is the best and actually there's not a single character I dislike which is fairly unusual for most tv shows.

Isn't it just Upstairs, Downstairs in the country?
My understanding is that they are similar, yet haven't seen Upstairs, Downstairs.
Downton Abbey is in it's 5th and final season. To be honest, I'm not particularly thrilled with the current season. It has been relatively dull, and too much focus on closing out the story lines, to the point where it almost seems forced in places. Some of the acting has been less than stellar this season as well, including little chemistry between the oldest daughter and her most recent suitor, plus the deceased youngest sister's husband seeming to try a bit much in getting the two of them together. Also, the in fighting between the two remaining sisters seems a bit much compared to previous seasons, not that it didn't exist, just not has heavy. There's only an episode or two remaining, and I hope the remaining shows are at least ok.
-
Im feeling crazy, I think I watch them both.
-
Brooklyn 99 is awesome.
It's the only show actually in TV I'm watching atm.
-
Right now I'm really just watching Vikings and Death In Paradise on tv. I'm working my way through the sci fi show The Expanse and it's not to bad, but hasn't really hooked me yet. I was told it was Firefly meets Game of Thrones in space, and I cannot disagree more. It's a decent sci fi, but it is not like those at all.
-
Am I the only one that thinks Ragnar would be better with his season 1 Haircut? Who else was happy to see little Boneless out and about?
-
To all the X-philes here, how is the 10th season overall?
Well done, Sir. My esteem for you just increased by about 23%.
-
Am I the only one that thinks Ragnar would be better with his season 1 Haircut? Who else was happy to see little Boneless out and about?
Absolutely. Although you can see Bjorn haircut starting to turn into the braid.
-
I like both of their season one haircuts, the older Bjorn's first haircut was good like a weird fade?
-
Finishing up Parks and Recreation. Starting up 30 Rock.
-
Good call! Both excellent shows.
-

Thanks Gneisenau, but truth be told, I've found it somwhere on the X-Files FB fanpage. Found it rather funny and appropriate. :-P
-
@ redshift
That's the one, and I agree too. Only half a season of content left there at the end. Not much more to tell, and stretched out too long and slightly unsatisfying. But overall was decent IMO.
-
I recently finished watching Jessica Jones on netflix. I'm not normally that keen on superhero things, but this was really good (and quite light on superpowers).
David Tennant was astonishing as the villain.
-
I've just started. We are up to episode 5. Pretty good so far.
-
I think I'll watch the Strain. It's supposed to be a good horror show.
-
I'm watching Marco Polo (Netflix original).
Anyone else watching it.
The foot binding scene keeps playing my head all day today, and makes me feel angry and sick.
-
we watched it here and loved it. Got it's own pro's and cons but Kublai khan is amazing. Marco is the only actor I'm not crazy about, all the various Asian actors are gold in that.
-
Kublai is excellent. Makes the show great.
I feel like answering people with a grunt/growl now too.
First episode was a bit stiff. Episode 2 sold me on it - with kublai's brother.
-
HAs anyone watched the new NETFLIX "Strange Things" yet? OH man its great its like a Steven king novel set in a Steven Spielberg movie!!
-

Just watched the first episode. Agree with above! Chocolate chip cookies are baking and getting ready for round 2 🍪

HAs anyone watched the new NETFLIX "Strange Things" yet? OH man its great its like a Steven king novel set in a Steven Spielberg movie!!
Watched two episodes last week and like it quite a bit so far. Hope to find some time to watch more soon.
-
We've watched six episodes now, and we've called out allusions to or inspiration from just about every movie from the period it's set in ('80s.) I love the obvious posters hanging in the backgrounds at some of the houses -- The Thing, Evil Dead, etc. Enjoying the show quite a bit. More than anything else in a while. Looking forward to the last few episodes, but I also don't want it the season/series to end.

Dude perfect description. .. I also like the John Carpenter style back ground music in parts. I just finished a little while ago, great time to get the flu hahaha
-
We just watched the last two episodes last night. Really loved the series. Almost from the start I was talking about the soundtrack. They're apparently planning to release a soundtrack.
Also, I now want to get a couple of friends together for an oldschool D&D campaign. :-D
-
Just started it myself. I've been meaning to for awhile but never found the time. Watched the first one today while I was doing some paper work stuff and got hooked. Looks fantastic already.
-
My wife and I enjoyed picking out all of the 80s references. Someone has put together a video with side by side comparisons. We disagree on a few, and had a few others that aren't in the video, but most are what we picked up on too. Good to know we weren't just making it up for the sake of nostalgia.
ACHTUNG! SPOILERS IN VIDEO! https://vimeo.com/175929311
-
watched one epiusode of stranger things with the wife. Good enough to carry on, presumably it gets better!
I think my knowledge of 80s films is probably not quite good enough to fully enjoy it though

OK that was cool

(( Hey Findlay ,
It does get better. It keeps that slow burn feel to it... and Stranger Things reminded me a lot of Twilight Zone and Elfin Lied.
It's cool how at 8 episodes, it tells a chilling and creepy story. And I like how the "villian" isn't standard. ))
-
Stranger Things reminded me a lot of Twilight Zone and Elfin Lied.
Great, now I'll be wondering all night what the common denominator is between those two. :-)

Just watched the first 3 episodes of "Stranger Things." Its really good. Like if Spielberg and Stephen King had a baby in the 80s. The intro music itself is awesome.

Yeah, thanks for the reference! I am enjoying it.
-

Thanks! I'll give it a try when I get the chance.
Stumbled across "The 100" recently. I don't get it. Does it have anything worthwhile that I should keep looking for? Except for lots of ruggedly handsome people killing each other, of course. That's obvious.
-
Several of my friends are fans of it. I've been told season 2 is better then season 1, but I never got into it myself.
I just finished Season 2 of Marco Polo on Netflix and stranger things. I'm about to start something called Johnathon Strange and Mr. Norrell, but I know nothing about other then "English wizards during Napoleonic war" fantasy show.
-
How good is Mr. Robot? I've heard mixed things about it and I want to try something new...
-
Poldark is due to restart soon and I suspect I will be made to sit through it - Ive had a blissfull few weeks without too much girly television!
-
Mr Robot was kinda good, but we stopped watching it after 4 episodes I think, so we mustn't have enjoyed it too much.
Stranger things was great.
the 100 looks absolutely shite.
Strange and Mr Norrel looks fun, I think Rufus liked it. Quite want to get the wife into it.
If the wife doesnt like it, typically I then just don't bother and don't watch it.
-
Stranger Things - Binged watched it in one night last week. I've never done that before. It’s a show about a bunch of nerdy 12-year-olds back in 1983 who play D&D and get picked-on in school. I was a nerdy 12-year-old back in 1983 who played D&D and got picked-on in school. I did not give them permission to make a TV show about my life story. Also, my biggest crush back in the 80s was Winona Ryder. Nice to see she still does it for me, even if she is portraying 44-year-old, burnt-out, single mom.
DS9 – Greatest show on television. Ever. Benjamin Sisko yells at everyone. EVERYONE.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjvYiSDJujA
Downton Abbey – Great period piece. This is one to watch with the wife. It’s a very manly shows, despite what Finlay says.
Marco Polo – It’s on Netflix, and, due to the comments from the brothers here, it’s next on my list.
-
@Texas Yankee - Yes! DS9 for the win! I've watched most of the whole show nightly on challenge and then it just went back to the beginning and I'm watching it over again. It's a nightly ritual. The only downer was the finale which I thought was rubbish. Time and time again there are scenes showing what a good dad Sisko was, then he just goes to live with the prophets and abandons his son because ... reasons. Bleh!
The supporting cast - quark, garak, gul dukat - are fantastic.
-
Marco Polo – It’s on Netflix, and, due to the comments from the brothers here, it’s next on my list.
Yep! 1st episode is a bit wooden, but after the second I was hooked. Kublai is awesome.
-
Guess The Stranger Things and Mr. Robot are next on my list then. ;)
-

Harris Yulin in "Duet". Cardassians really got the best actors.

New robot wars has been pretty enjoyable

The wife I really enjoyed this! On Daredevil season 2 now. Lookin forward to Luke Cage
Next up is Dark Matter. Saw episode 1 on release missed the rest.
Waiting for Expanse, Grimm, Gotham.
I'm also one of those who prefers B5 to DS9. Rewatching slowly
My uncle recommended Broadchurch so may try that

Holy shit, you weren't kidding! I just finished episode 4 last night. This show is amazing! Kublai is indeed the man, gout and all!

The Shanara Chronicles, interesting first (double?) episode.
-
I watched that. Wasn't to bad for a fantasy show. Druid was badass.
-
The Shanara Chronicles, interesting first (double?) episode.
I got about two and a half books into that series long ago, before giving up on it. I'm curious to see the show... but more like watching (what I expect to be) a disaster unfolding.
My wife and I watched the first episode of Strange & Norrell, partially based on above comments. Seems like it's got potential, curious to keep watching.
-
My wife started watching "get down". She enjoyed hairspray though - similar era.
-
Wife and I got "The Fall" on dvd, watched three episodes and it seems pretty good. Bit weird hearing Gillian Anderson speak in her normal accent after watching the X Files.
-
We watched second episode of strange and norrell, getting better.
Don't think the wife likes it much.
Read an article about how women now rule the remote in the age of binge watching box sets. Do others find that true?
-
We only watch about 2 shows a year, so not really. I chose the latest few.
-

I liked "The Fall" a lot. Anderson was great, so was Dornan. It was tense and fascinating, altough I've never finished the second season.
-
The wife really liked The Fall, I'm just not that into the dark gritty crime dramas like that.
-
Anyone been watching the Sci fi shows Dark Matter or Killjoys?

Thought I would check out a trailer for Shannara...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crjkQHnDYu0
"The talent that's been assembled, the variety of locations, the beautiful backdrop of New Zealand, it really establishes the world of the Shannara Chronicles in a way that separates it from other genre tales."
Are you fucking serious? Can't think of any other fantasy films with a variety of locations, filmed in New Zealand, with an even better cast -- perhaps even one that may have included John Rhys-Davies?
So the series is separated from Tolkein the same way that Sword of Shannara was?
Haven't watched it yet, but I saw that it's on Netflix. So I may give it a try. Is there really anything that really "separates it" other than the (very unlikely) remains of 1000+ year old wreckage from the pre-armageddon world?

hehe well that was pretty stupid indeed, and on the last question ehh no besides the other then mentioned. Unless if you classify deamons different from orcs as the arch enemy.
Seen episodes 3 and 4 now and it's enjoyable so far, and elves are not goody two shoes here, so that breaks a bit from tradition. But the whole thing isn't great either. I would classify it lower then LotR and Hobbit to be honest (but I do rate LotR and Hobbit higher then most would)
-
God that new Dirk Gently was dreadful...really wish they had done more to the Mangan ones...sigh
-
Anyone seen the new Red Dwarf? Ive found it quite amusing but I cant say it has really evolved that much over the many years since season six; still funny but essentially still the same old jokes.
-
Anyone been watching the Sci fi shows Dark Matter or Killjoys?
I just binged season two of Dark Matter. It's kind of starting to go off the rails, but I like it.
-

I watched the first couple and felt the same. I chuckled, I liked it, but it's essentially the same thing. I was more interested in seeing what everyone looks like back in costume after so many years.
Anyone been watching the Sci fi shows Dark Matter or Killjoys?
I just binged season two of Dark Matter. It's kind of starting to go off the rails, but I like it.
I binged through the season in about two or three days as well. It really escalated quickly towards the end there.
-
For the last two days I've been assaulted by the new "Walking Dead" so much, that I'll probably start watching the damn thing.
-
Walking Dead - Great Comic Series (one of the best in my opinion) Great Television Series as well. You won't be disappointed.
-
Never read the comics, but to be honest I'm liking the show less and less with every season. I get that the horrors of a zombie-filled world are slowly being replaced with the hazards of a lawless post-apocalyptic world and the breakdown of civilization. After seven s3asons ig would've gotten stale otherwise. I'm just saying it could've been handled much, much better than TWD is handling it.
-
Just binge watched 'Still Game' on Netflix but am missing the 2016 episodes they restarted this year after 8 years. Totally love this show and wish their were more. Might try Rab Nesbit next.
-
For the last two days I've been assaulted by the new "Walking Dead" so much, that I'll probably start watching the damn thing.
I haven't seen season six yet, but the first five are definitely worth watching. It's by no means perfect, but very well done in many ways, especially the character development. It's also very American.
-
He means guns.
-
:icon_lol:
I don't, actually. But still, that was very funny.
-
Okay, I guess that requires a little explanation. Minor spoilers up to season 5 ahead:
- The entire setting is essentially a settler scenario in a rebooted North America. Zombie stories are usually about the alleged evils of consumerism; this theme is entirely absent from TWD. About the only concession is the country club in season 4, and Andrea nicking some trinket for her sister in season 1. Instead, much of the focus is on survival in a hostile environment, about farming and hunting. The ruins of civilization provide the backdrop, but are rarely necessary for the story.
- TWD is about "common people". None of them would in any way be special in our world. Rick is a deputy, Darryl a hillbilly, Carol a housewife, Hershel a doctor-turned-farmer, and it goes on. Andrea is one of the few to even have a college degree. The show is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, which I consider to be a very American trope. Compare and contrast this with GoT, where almost everybody is a noble (and the show suffers from that in my opinion).
- Much emphasis (maybe too much) is put on the importance of families - a notion that I think is more present in the conservative parts of the US than in Europe. To the show's credit, there's no homophobia associated with this.
- If you feel like it, you can make out a strong anti-government theme in the show. Government agents are at best well-meaning but ineffectual (Dr. Jenner, the National Guard) or far less competent than the "free" survivors (Alexandria) or plain evil (most of the Atlanta police department, or what's left of it). Is it an accident that the most prominent villain in the show fancies himself to be "the Governor"? Probably not.
I could probably go on if I thought some more but that's what comes to my mind for the moment.
-
FWIW, my wife and I both enjoyed all of Strange & Norrell.
We don't have cable, so it's usually Netflix or DVDs. Since the release of the Adventure Time Season 6 DVD set was conveniently the same week as our anniversary, my wife bought it for me. So we're binging on that now.
-
I also liked Strange and Norrell. Was very different from what I expected, generally in a good way.
For a lighter, kill some time show I've been watching Forged in Fire on this history channel. It's like master chef, but instead of making food they have to blacksmith a knife or sword.
-
I also still have the Dwarvenaut documentary on my list.
-
Strange and Norrell was excellent.
-
Walking Dead - Great Comic Series (one of the best in my opinion) Great Television Series as well. You won't be disappointed.
I've read the comics many years ago and really, really liked them. I actually might give this show a try. :smile2:

A Stranger Things Christmas
https://youtu.be/5XPpm-igsRE
One of my new Favorite Things on the Internets
-
I'm sure that others with young children can sympathize, but most of the TV I see anymore are children's shows & movies. (I have a five year old daughter.) So I've become an expert children's television critic. I've even thought of starting a web site or blog dedicated to a dual critique format, addressing both the quality & appropriateness of a show for young children, and then also addressing how watchable it is for parents. Because there are some shows that really make me want to scratch my eyes from their sockets. Maybe I should just start a new post here...? :-D
At any rate, our latest show (though it's not new) is Zig and Sharko, and I think my wife and I like it almost as much as our daughter. It's about a hyena (Zig) stranded on a tropical island. He's hungry, so he's obsessed with catching and eating a mermaid (Mariana) who lives off the coast of the island. The mermaid's boyfriend is a huge shark (Sharko.) Zig has a friend on the island, a crab named Bernie. There's no real speaking, just emotive noises (screams, grunts, laughs.)
I can see where it's drawn some of its inspiration from both Roadrunner cartoons, and Ren & Stimpy. (Although the latter has set the tone for a lot of the animation that's come out since.) Probably the most violent show we let her watch (though Teen Titans GO! probably comes close  .) But as my wife and I have discussed, we both watched Loony Toons, Tom & Jerry, etc. when we were kids, and most of it happens off screen in Zig & Sharko.
-
Binging on Paranoid. A netflix series. Really enjoying it. Finished the 'Midnight Diner' last week. A Japanese Netflix series that was quaint and enjoyable.
-
Haven't read the thread, so I don't know if it's been mentioned - but I stumbled upon The Expanse by accident, and it's pretty damn good IMO.
They do a great job world-building, the technology seems plausible from what I've seen and the plot and characters are interesting.
Looking forward to season two, and I just ordered "Leviathan wakes", the first of the books the series is based on.

I got really into Expanse when it came out. I cheated and read ahead about the book, and some of the later stuff looks even more awesome.
I liked the murder mystery kind of direction on top of a sci fi story. The characters where good and the world building of the Belters was real fun.
-
It's on my "to watch" list but not started yet
-
Starting to watch 'the crown'.
-
Watched the crown. Really liked it. Binged right thru.
-
Same here. Room mate started watching it and we all ended up binging it over about two days. Thought it was pretty good. Would have liked them to show more pre coronation stuff but otherwise good.
-
John lithgow as Churchill was just fantastic. Great character.
-
Yeah, it is actually pretty good to see Phillip from another lense.
Almost finished Luke Cage.
*yawn*
Was nowhere near as good as Jessica Jones.
-
Anyone seen westworld? Stunning visuals but I got a little lost towards the middle of the season with all of the various threads and dispersion through time; I think i will finish out the season but I'm not sure how much milage there is in it going forward. Bit too much thinking for me after a day at work.
-
Almost finished Luke Cage.

Thanks for the warning! Luke was fine in Jessica Jones, but I can't see how he'd carry his own series. Especially without a villain like David Tennant.

No probs.
The baddie changes half way through anyway. Second episode, to me, i started to lose empathy for why luke was doing what he was doing anyway. It really is pretty boring, and could have been shortened into a 2 hr netflix movie instead. It just gets drawn out and drawn out. Really not a fan. Watching it felt like more of a chore. Jessica Jones we couldn't wait to see what happened. Luke Jones, we are finishing in the background each night while doing other things, because we were hoping it would get better. It didn't.
-
Yes, you need a really strong storyline to fill that many episodes.
-
Finished Stranger Things and on to Sherlock. Only got the first episode (movie) done. Finding time to watch it will be slightly challenging, I feel. Also giving Galavant a try. It's pretty good, though I feel could be better. Also, catching up on the last season of Big Bang Theory. I don't care if other's don't like it, I do.

I tried to get into "Into the Badlands". (That could have been phrased better.) I really like the opening credits.
Unfortunately, the rest is rubbish.

Big Bang is Brilliant. :engel:

Into the second season of Star Trek: A New Generation. I feel like I'll never get through it all.

Yeah, it's pretty horrible.

While I agree with that assessment - the Tasha Yar subsect of religiously hardcore Trek fans just issued a Fatwa on your ass.

I'd love to hear someone defend that episode where the people from 'planet of the Irish stereotypes' get dumped (by the Enterprise) on the planet of 'people who reproduce by cloning' and Picard tells them they have to have sex with each other.

Can't wait!

Good luck! I think the last episode of series 2 is a clip show!

Are you discussing "The Next Generation" ?
Or is there a 'New' series I know nothing about?

I've been watching Mystery science theatre 3000 via a smart TV
For those not in the know, MST3K is a show in which either Joel Robbison or Mike Nelson and their robot puupet companions 'watch' an old movie [usually of the B grade variety] and have a mocking commentary over the top of it.
If you thought Battlefeild Earth was a bad sci fi movie, check out 'Space mutiny' instead. Atleast Travolta wasnt trying to defeat his enemies by running over them in a pimped out golf cart

I forgot about the thrilling subplot where Worf has Klingon measles.
Also, it's funny that the story was intended to be pro-immigration and pro-abortion, but managed to give the exact opposite impression.
-
When I was 9, one of my friends would always get me to watch TNG with him. It used to bore me to tears
-
I never really watched it, but my impression has been more of a drama than sci fi.
-
Also, space Irish hate synthehol whiskey.
-
Most of the episodes he showed me prominently featured Wesley and the female security chief [Trisha Yard?]
Anyway, from what I understand, Wesley is hated in the fanbase for good reason. Honestly; what were the writers thinking: "why get the robot or Leforge to fix something when the obnoxious teenager can" :eusa_wall:

Not sure if VHS tapes count, but I'm finishing Frank Delaney's 1987 BBC mini series The Celts, while going through my VHS/DVD collection to see what I want to keep and what can go into the yard sale.
This one's a keeper.
As for current shows, there is literally NOTHING on TV worth a minute of my time, with the possible exception of the weather forecast.
Lies & propaganda, all of it.
-
Also, it's funny that the story was intended to be pro-immigration and pro-abortion, but managed to give the exact opposite impression.
I didn't catch the pro-abortion part? Is it supposed to be justified when they phaser their stolen cell clones?
It didn't really seem like a pro abortion moment.

Yes, that's it! The problem is that the analogy doesn't work at all. It isn't even close. They incinerate a pair of mature adults!
There's a quote from the writer at the site I linked to:
"I got enormous flack from the right to life coalition because they destroyed the clones. They thought I was condoning abortion. In fact, I did put a line in Riker's mouth that was very pro-choice and the right to life coalition went crazy. He says "I told you that you can't clone me and you did it against my will, and I have the right to have control over my own body." That's my feeling and it was my soapbox, and it was one I got to get on.
-

Yup, that's the one. They go quite voluntarily.
-
I'm not sure why this is an argument, but I meant the clone people didn't want them! Not that the fake Irish didn't want to go.
-
I like the part about the polygamy. I especially like to imagine whoever is back at Starfleet getting all these reports, wondering what the heck is happening out there.
-

So I was a big NTG nerd when I was a kid but didn't really get into DS9. I saw a couple of interesting clips on youtube which promptred me to watch an episode (the one where Garak's shop gets blown up). My wife has never seen Star Trek before so she watched it with me. She is now hooked on DS9.
Also I never knew the Klingon's had their very own Westley Crusher in DS9 :engel:
*cough Alexander cough daddy issues cough*

Deep Space Nine is so much better than TNG. The characters are stronger, the stories are more meaningful, and Garak never stops being awesome.
It still has some bad episodes, but not too many!

I love DS9, with the exception of the (not quite sure, but should be about right) first two seasons.
In the beginning it's pretty much trying to imitate TNGs schtick, with problem of the week plots that have little if any continuity, and the writers are clearly still trying to find their stride with the chraracters. After they get that down and find the courage to say "hey, we actually CAN have plots that take multiple episodes or even seasons to resolve, and that will make for better stories all round" it gets awesome.

Sorry, Picard! You were the best thing in TNG.
I remember giving up on Babylon Five during the first series, but then watching it again in the third and finding it was suddenly really good! It definitely had some wonky acting though, and as Aldaris said it looks quite dated.

They actually weren't allowed much continuity early on. Apparently, the writers were only allowed to introduce the Dominion 'if it was resolved after a couple of episodes.' :icon_lol: It took five series.
I looked at a list of episodes, and you're mostly right about series one and two being weak. But there are still some good episodes, notably: Duet, In the hands of the prophets, Cardassians, Necessary evil, Whispers, Blood oath, The wire, and The collaborator.

Speaking of older Sci/Fi space adventure shows, I was very saddened to discover Farscape was no longer on Netflix. I usually watch through quite a few during hte Christmas season out of strange tradition.

I don't think I ever watched DS9 in any sort of order, so continuity never really bothered me.
Is "In the hands of the prophets" the episode where you think they're going to talk about the complex issue of teaching religious doctrines in the classroom, but it really turns into the coup/assassination attempt on the Bajoran space pope?
I always enjoyed the TNG episode surrounding Data and his persuit of humanity. The episode where he's on trial I thought was very good.
-
Yeah and Data's thoughts on suicide was rather interesting.
-
Is "In the hands of the prophets" the episode where you think they're going to talk about the complex issue of teaching religious doctrines in the classroom, but it really turns into the coup/assassination attempt on the Bajoran space pope?
Well, yes... but I'd describe it as being about the way politicians use conservative religious dogma (that they don't themselves believe in) purely as a way to gain power. Vadek Winn corrupts a young Bajoran into becoming an assassin by convincing her it's 'the will of the prophets.' And then later, she actually becomes space pope.
Maybe it's less relevant in the Trump era, since religion has been thrown under a bus along with everything else in favour of racism and lies.
I always enjoyed the TNG episode surrounding Data and his persuit of humanity. The episode where he's on trial I thought was very good.
It was, though it made the Federation look like anti-robot bigots. Data has been an officer in Star Fleet for years and only now they decide he's property?
It was a good excuse for a dramatic Picard speech though.

So the wife and I have been watching DS9 and is it just me or is Garak gay for Bashir?
I'm pretty sure ziyal is just his beard...much to Dukat's chagrin.
-
Who isn't gay for Bashir?
Guy is awesome.

Watched season 1 + 2 of the flash. So, so much better than Luke Cage.
Harrison Wells is an excellent character.
-
Talking of watching star trek, I'm towards the end of rewatching voyager.
I know it's not universally liked and they definitely could have done so much better had they have taken a ds9 approach to story arcs but for what it is I have a soft spot for it.
It's hard to deny that it also gets a lot better a couple of seasons in when they ditch kes and bring in seven. People often focus on the possibly more cynical view of why they changed them out, but honestly the seven progression of story and just overall ability to act is so much more compelling.
I kinda wish they had access to the tng crew in these days of complex story arcs with some great writers. They had an amazing cast there who sadly had to do a lot of pretty dodgy shows with a few standout ones here and there.
-

Absolutely!
Seven was exactly what the show needed, mainly because she created some moral discord in the otherwise pretty uniform la-la-land of the Star Trek universe. She was - at least in the beginning - the most "evil" main character that Star Trek ever had (not counting "Enterprise", because honestly, who would), and that was great. After all, meaningful tension is the basis for any good story.
Jeri Ryan was terrific, though of course she also got the best lines.
Overall though it's a shame how much potential they wasted with that show. The premise was great (but got squandered) and some of the actors were very good. "Year of Hell" gave a glimpse at what might have been.
So the wife and I have been watching DS9 and is it just me or is Garak gay for Bashir?
I have no idea how anyone could ever reach this conclusion. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2q2ySAOyqo)
-

The actor said he deliberately played Garak as being sexually interested in Bashir.
He's so proud of Bashir for shooting him in the James Bond episode! :icon_lol: That episode was also great for being a Holodeck plot that couldn't be fixed by just turning the thing off, unlike every time they did it on TNG.

Voyager wasn't that bad really, but it needed better writers and better actors! Borg lady and holodoctor were good, but the others were either bland (like the first officer) or actively annoying (the captain, the alien cook).
I didn't see all of it though.
She was - at least in the beginning - the most "evil" main character that Star Trek ever had

Hey, Kate Mulgrew is a fine actress. They just changed her character from episode to episode.
Robert Beltrami, on the other hand, was lousy.
-
Been watching a BBC short series "Sword, Musket & Machine Gun: Britain's Armed History"
Episode One was about Sword, axes, crossbows and the longbow.
Episode 2 went on to black powder weapons.
Episode 3 is next week and goes up to WW1 - the Vickers machine gun features. Episode 1 tells how an experiment on one single machine saw it fire over 5,000,000 rounds non-stop over the course of a week. How's that for reliability.
Not sure if it is available outside the UK?
-
Sounds great! Going to look for it. That vickers reminds me of a film of the Newfoundland regiment 'the blue putties' on the attack. They were virtually wiped out. The camera man had to shut it down as it was too depressing to watch. Of course this was censored back home at the time. I think the band 'great big sea' did a song about them. I'm not sure how my grandfather survived 4 years there. He was gassed a couple of times and that eventually finished him off at the age of 72 I think. Tough old codger 'e was😺

Yeah mulgrew was good but they definitely wrote her making done odd choices. Neelix is a big pity. I actually think he could have been a great character considering his empathy, wartime experience and wheeler dealer trickster knowledge. Unfortunately they relegated him to comic relief mostly and not good comic relief like the doc's huge ego. The guy is a pretty good actor too which makes it all the more a pity.
From what I can tell, beltran just got more and more underused and was upset by it so kinda went into coasting mode. It would have been much more interesting if they had kept some of the maquis fire in him but after a few episodes they decided he should be janeways loyal puppy.
As people here are more into ds9, was anyone else a dukat fan? I loved garek of course, but I really enjoyed the way that dukat basically got to be the exact opposite, outwardly villainous but with a secret and complicated moral side.
-
Yes, it was probably Kate Mulgrew's character that was at fault rather than her acting.
The Starfleet/Marquis split in the crew could have been interesting if they'd actually used it!
As people here are more into ds9, was anyone else a dukat fan? I loved garek of course, but I really enjoyed the way that dukat basically got to be the exact opposite, outwardly villainous but with a secret and complicated moral side.
I think he was a fantastic villain, because his arrogance, his fragile ego, his total self-deceit, and his underlying brutality felt very realistic. He was the man in charge of the occupation and oppression of Bajor who couldn't understand why the Bajorans didn't appreciate him. Couldn't they see that he was trying his best to look after them? He was only doing his job!
He became more and more obsessed with Sisko as the series went on, going to greater and greater extremes to simultaneously destroy him and earn his respect.
Damar had one hell of a character arc too.
-
I watched all of Voyager, but to me it's still the worst Star Trek series. People have already named most of my reasons, so I won't repeat them. The real pity was that the premise and some characters on that show were amazing. The Doc is still one of my all time favourites. On the other hand, Neelix was just cringeworthy (and I don't use that word lightly) - awkward, unfunny and annoying. Overall a lot of wasted potential!
As for Enterprise - I actually liked it for a lot of its run! It fell off towards the end, but most of that series felt very solid to me. Some good characters, and the setting was fresh and interesting. Some good plots too. Could have been better, but I don't really get the hate that show has garnered.
And all that DS9 talk makes me want to rewatch it again. Such a good series! I agree that Dukat was a fantasic villain. IMO the best one Star Trek ever had. And the show was also bold enough to smack our beloved Starfleet heroes with some truly dark shit - "In the pale Moonlight" is still in my top 3 Star Trek episodes ever.
-
I actually enjoyed enterprise too, though it's hard to deny it all get maybe a touch too over reaching? I did really enjoy the whole thing with the race of different animal types and such though and how can you not love bakula?
-
I watched the UK championship on the WWE network and it was fucking fantastic.
-
I've just finished TNG and have started DS9. I'm enjoying the characters so far despite many people telling me it's terrible.
I've also watched the first two TNG movies (Generation and First Contact). They're ok (despite obvious plot holes) but it's like they tried to make TNG into an action movie and failed to make it either. Such a waste. Hopefully Insurrection and Nemesis are better.
Should I begin watching voyager concurrently with DS9 since they're set at the same time? I already messed up my time frames watching First Contact before Worf made it to DS9.
-
Nah, I would watch Voyager after DS9 if I were you.
-

"I can live with it, can't I? . . . Computer, delete entire log entry."
DS9 was by far the best. I still enjoyed TOS, TNG, Voyager and Enterprise, but none of them had the depth of characters and storyline that DS9 had. Plus the space battles were by far the best! Dukat and the Cardassians in general were great villains, but the secondary characters (Damar, Weyoun, the female changeling leader) were what put the show at the top.

I have to admit: when I first heard tangentially about the Kardashians a couple of years ago, I wondered why in God's name an obscure race from Star Trek was attracting media attention.
-
The Expanse season 2 has started airing, and it's really good.
Season 1 was a bit slow at times because they had to do a lot of world building (which I didn't mind at all!) - season 2 has really been steaming ahead right out the gate. Highly recommended if you're into scifi at all, it's an amazing show.
-
Big fan of the Expanse. Really looking forward to sitting down and binging the new episodes.
Started watching Black Sails.. seen episode 3 of season 1.. not sure what to make of it..feels full of political intrigues instead of brute piracy
I watched a lot of Black Sails for the first two seasons. It was really good at first, but then started becoming less and less about pirates. By the time I stopped mid season 2, it was just everyone wheeling and dealing but not actually accomplishing anything. It felt like multiple episodes of everyone just sitting at a table constantly renegotiating a contract, only to come back next week and do it again.
-
Did they at least speak like pirates during the sit down negotiations? Did they drink rum? Any eyepatches?
-
When you say 'Did they speak like pirates?' I take it you actually mean, 'Did they speak like they were from Devon?' 'Cos if not ... you are aware that not all pirates were from Devon, yeah?
-
The answer to all your questions is generally no. Except for the rum part. I believe there was lots of rum. The accents could get all over the place, a real tour of the world.
-
I was talking in jest?
Glad to hear there was rum!

Well, I would guess the vast majority of pirates in history spoke either Arabic or Chinese.
-
That sounds like a reasonable guess.
What would the Cilicians have used as lingua franca? Greek?
-
Yes. When Caesar was captured, he recited to the pirates poems and speeches he wrote. Although not explicitly mentioned, Caesar must have written these works in Greek, which they apparently understood without problem, as they were supposed to comment. But not just as lingua franca - presumeably there must have been quite a number that spoke e.g. Pamphylian Greek as their native tongue, given that a number of Greek colonies were founded way before the conquest by Alexander.
-
Very good! Thank you.

Not a tv show but that reminds me of the comic Scrooge McDuck - must have been the 70's I guess. I loved that comic.

I'm pretty meh on all of them. I couldn't even make it very far into Jessica Jones, Daredevil with the Punisher bits was okay couldn't make a go of it with season one, and Luke Cage was really only entertaining for the villain that then dies mid series and so did my interest.

We tried watching daredevil a year or two ago, and didn't get it. Tried again the other week, and still dont get it.
Jessica Jones i think we found interesting because we liked her, we liked the blonde, we liked David Tennat bad guy, and we liked the odd snippets of Luke Cage.
We sat through luke cage, because we liked him in jessieca jones, but it felt like pulling teeth. The story i felt was really lacking and i didnt feel like the bad guy was that bad. It coukd have been told in a 2 hr special rather than stretched out over 10 hrs. We ended up just having it on in the background while we did other stuff.
We put designated survivor on after the 1 episode of daredevil, and found it more interesting. And we generally dont like the poltical / terrorism shows much. Except for Blacklist. But thats because James Spader and his character is awesome.
-
Is anyone watching Legion? Because you should be.
Why? The trailers didn't stoke my interest. What do you like about it?
-
I liked Daredevil whenever it was about actual Daredevil stuff.
The worst part of these types of shows is almost always the uninteresting drama and side characters. If I wanted soap opera I'd watch that instead of superhero shows.
-

It's weird, it's visually interesting, and the latest episode (4) had Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords in it!
Watch it!
-
Flute of the Commodores!
That's reason enough. I'll go watch it!
-
Is there something wrong with me, or why do i not like netflix's Daredevil? Lots of people rave about it, but i think its boring and crap. Same with Luke Cage. Jessica Jones was the only good one.
watched about 3 episodes of DDevil. was crap.
Don't really get any of the marvel hype though tbh
-
Lemme just quickly plug The Expanse again, since I just watched the latest episode and can't wait for next week's fix. And saw like 5 minutes ago on reddit it just had its third season greenlit.
Have I mentioned it's quite good? If not, lemme tell you: it's quite good.

Yeah, i know. I remember.
But yeah, haven't bothered with netflix for a few weeks now.
Survivor is back! And blacklist. And Grimm. So we are happy enough at the moment.

Sadly not on US Netflix (though it was for ages don't know why they dropped it) but the show ended at series 9 (in 2015) which means I've not missed more thus panic averted . Shame That Mitchel and Webb was as short a run...shame I never tried to date the chick that actually knew who Sir Digby Chicken Cesar was either...sigh
As a sidenote, the Stag Weekend episode stands as my personal favorite

1st season Daredevil is a slog. Vincent D'onofrio is the only reason to watch it, tbh, because he is AMAZING. Jon Bernthal makes a great Punisher in season 2. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are the real shit, though. Iron Fist has been pretty meh.
-
Iron Fist has been pretty meh.
I've watched some clips of fight scenes from that series, and they did not exactly make me excited. I get that it is a TV series, but come on! Your premise is "the worlds greatest fighter does stuff". Put a little effort into the fisticuffs.

There's some okay kung fu, but he's no Donnie Yen.
-
Like I said, I only saw a couple clips. But those were not only not Donnie Yen, they weren't even Lorenzo Lamas.
-
Thr girl seemed ok with her fighting. Only seen 2 episodes this far though. And to be honest, i normally zone out of fight scenes nowadays - they are just there IMO to push the story arc.
-
Fight scenes are rarely engaging unless the stakes are high and the characters valuable (Mountain vs Viper), or unless the scene is unusually well choreographed and shot (Oldboy hallway fight).
-
Mountain vs Viper was a great fight scene. But unlike the obligatory episodal fight scenes in iron fist or another marvel show, the mountain vs viper fight scene also had significant build.
-
started watching Twin Peaks ( again) on Netflix
-
Twin Peaks. Still (IMO) the best tv ever.
-
Goliath on Amazon is pretty damn good.
-
Samurai Jack is back on Adult Swim. Was a big fan of it back in the day, and now the story continues with season five. Already two episodes in and it's pretty epic. Great stuff. He no longer fights only robots, there is blood now, and it's as much a shock to Jack as it is to people watching the show.
-
Twin Peaks. Still (IMO) the best tv ever.
its great I think it inspired X-files ..anyway after they get the killer of Laura Palmer it kind of takes a down word spiral. I'm curious about the reboot though :::cheers:::
-
I loved it all the way to the (a little bit rushed) end.
Rebooting it worries me. I want the new one to be as good, but that won't be easy. Last I heard they're having ongoing problems with a reboot/sequel.

I never watched it as a kid as we didn't get the channels, but saw an ad for the new series and now I do get the right channel, got it on TiVo.

Twin Peaks season 3 is a "go", but there hadbeen ongoing problems. At some point, David Lynch was booted or withdrew from the project because of disagreements with the studio, with much of the cast threatening to walk if he didn't return. Seems like everything was resolved, though. First screenshots:

Very weird to see all of these characters, who I've seen countless times on screen, frozen as they were 25 years ago, aged so much.
And yes, Padre, very much agree that Twin Peaks may well be the greatest television ever made.
-
wow seeing the screen shots is so cool but seeing how they have aged is sort of weird. Speaking of I just finished the episode where they go into owl cave and you are right its still good, but there are a few characters I'm not liking.
-
Yeah, for sure. I definitely still love it to the bitter end. But you're absolutely right that, following the resolution of the Laura Palmer/Bob plotline, it loses a lot of focus. Wyndham Earle is also a character who seems fascinating and terrifying the way that Cooper talks about him, but pretty underwhelming in his actual depiction.
The last episode - particularly the sequence in the Black Lodge - is an absolute tour de force, though.
This song still gives me chills!

So I started watching the UK show about folks living in the city and wanting to move to the country. Good grief housing in the UK is expensive!!! Is this true or is it just certain areas in the country? most counties are in the south. Also, some of these cottages are older than the US which makes me think just how young a nation we are, lol
:::cheers:::

I think I'm going to watch season 1 of True Detective, one more time. This show's glorious.

I think I'm going to watch season 1 of True Detective, one more time. This show's glorious.
Season 1 was amazing; some of the best TV I've ever watched. Season 2? Acting was great, characters were great, but I've never seen a more convoluted plot in my life. Seriously, you needed a flow chart to maintain who was who and what was going on.
-
I've been watching person of interest lately. I like the lead characters in it (mostly played pretty dry) and the over arching plot. Didn't really expect to like it with it coming out amongst the chain of dodgy stuff that has come out recently.

Yeah, I've heard that about season 2. Still gonna watch it, even for the cast alone. I'm so glad that they'll make season 3. :smile2:

Did anyone watch Legion? I'm not sure how I feel about the final episode. Not enough resolution really.

New season of Trail park Boys out today, the first back on Netflix was quite good the other two since not so much, this one so far seems like the writing has improved again.

Huge fan of the new Samurai Jack, the oldest daughter and I very much enjoying it.
For some reason, am also a huge fan of Z Nation. It's a poor-man's Walking Dead, with very tongue-in-cheek, dark comedy.
-
I was a big fan of Z nation for season 1, and the first half of season 2. Only stopped because I lost the channel for a bit and forgot. What season are they up to now? Still 2, or up to 3?

They finished season 3 in December of 2016. They have been given the green light for season 4. I've gotten as far a half-way through season 3.
-
I'll have to start back up again, I thought it was pretty good. Tongue-in-cheek like you said, but it had some fun moments. I enjoyed Citizen Z up in the artic leading everyone through disaster zones trying to get where their going.

im global produced the 2012 Dredd
-
I was actually pretty impressed with the Dredd movie. I was not expecting it to be good, but it did a great job.
-
The Urban Dredd film is one of my favourite movies of all time. It's a very rare thing I end a movie and then just start watching it again, whilst planning who I can watch it with later.
-
right?
It's amazing. really hope they catch the same vibe, could be amazing. Loved the film so much I went and bought some of the old Dredd casefiles- which have aged a fair bit tbh. I find the art quite fussy and not overly clear to follow, and it's a bit "story of the week" because, well, it came out weekly!
quite cool to read though. Some interesting crimes they dreamt up.
someone involved did battlestar galactica, which was awesome.
-

That's even better than getting a sequel.
-
My only fear is we'll see the silly Dark Judges and ruin the vibe. 2012 Dredd was so perfect because of how straight they played it.
-
Never seen it. Was never really all that interested to.
-
They call him judge frowny-face.
Watch it if you like simple but well made and gory action.
-
Ah.
I'm ok then.
-
Watch it of you want a solid story with a great female villain and some great one liners. Watch it if you liked Die Hard (the original one) and definitely watch it if you ever enjoyed any Judge Dredd comic story. The music's good, and with the action confined almost to one 'mega block' it's not a messy hotch potch of elements like the terrible Stalone film.
I recommend it. Come back here and tell me I'm wrong after you watch it.
-
Watching American Gods. Not quite as good as the book, but I'm still enjoying it. The opening sequence is horribly annoying - good thing we're streaming it and can zip past it.
Also catching up on GoT. I think we're a couple seasons behind, as we watch it on borrowed DVD. (On season 5, I think.)

It's free Netflix month for me. How much time will I spent on this? I've heard that it is quite addicting.

I see Netflix is helping fund a Witcher series, seems a sound improvement over the talk of a movie, which would struggle with the amount of material. No one knows if it will be CG or Live-Action, I'd hope for the former really.

I've just got Netflix in my home. I'm watching everything. Already binged the entire Iron Fist season, and now I'm watching the shooter tv-series. I'm doing this while gluing my Alpha Legion, but it's this kind of tv series, that you don't necessarily need to follow with attention.

For me this is great news. Witcher is a fantastic series of books and games and I'm sure that Netflix will do it justice. Here's hoping to a live action series!
Seems live action is all but confirmed, personally I preferred all CGI since appearance would by a trifle to the initial cost in that over the live action cut corners way in which I may enjoy most but string mail and all the idiocy they will bedeck extra with for cost reasons. Sigh I hope it is good, I've been drunkenly (mainly to manage watching it) going through the old series from Polish TV, that show makes me wonder what it takes to be a screen writer since many of the stories/vignettes from the books are not added by the adaptation (other issues aside).
Edit add: Polish seems to have the weirdest cognates with tongues I understand which is both fun and perplexing.
-
Feanor both.

Episode one of The Handmaid's Tale. Depressing.

@Feanor fire heart
I'm suddenly reminded of all the times I've heard kids say "Wouldn't it be great to live in those days" in regards to historical movies/shows. I don't know what they thought was so great about having to wallow in mud, filth, nearly starving to death and encountering cadavers on a daily basis.

Started watching Daredevil season 2. So far it is just as good as season 1.
-
My wife and I quite enjoyed Supergirl season 1. Great female characters in a superhero show.
-
Glow was an absolutely hilarious show. A great comedy about [staged] wrestling. The gags about the clichéd characters, forced rivalries and absurd, convoluted stories. AND there were the other things; like the sherbet [I'm assuming that's white the piles of white, powdery stuff were] robot [referred to as a 'Gobot'], references to MST3K AND Stan Bush's Dare. :eusa_clap:
AND on the subject of mst3k, I've been watching the latest season of that too. I wasn't surprised to see Lana Clarkson in yet another trashy barbarian movie. I kid you not, 'Wizards of the lost kingdom 2' is so crappy, it relies on spliced footage from most of the Deathstalkers to fill in bits.
Also been watching Last Kingdom. Its like a spinoff to Vikings
-
A great comedy about [staged] wrestling
it's still real to me damnit
-
Watched the first three episodes of "The Mist", the new show based off of Stephen King's novella. I read the book back in the 80s; loved it. Saw the movie that came out about 10 years ago; loved it. This new series, however? Not so much. WAY too much contemporary politics, cliched characters, etc. Plus, after three episodes, it would be nice to see an actual MONSTER. If nothing else pops up, I may continue to watch this, but for now . . . meh . . .
-
I really liked the movie with Thomas Jane. Grim and depressing - loved it!

Jodie Whittaker.
Not Kris Marshall! Hurrah.

I don't know who she is! Was hoping for Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Glad it's not Marshall though.
-
I'm from the Tom Baker / Elizabeth Sladen era replete with Davros and his daleks. Man I loved that show but have to say I havnt watched it since that era
-
I've been watching series 1-8 since last April, and planning on getting the DVDs for the 9th series this week (and series ten as soon as I can get my hands on them). Absolutely loving it, one of the most entertaining shows I've seen.
I'm very interested in seeing Jodi Whittaker take up the part, she was great in Broadchurch, and starring next to David Tennant (favorite doctor!) and Arthur Darvil for three seasons has to count for something.
-
Article by Colin Baker (6th Doctor) in support of Jodie Whittaker's casting:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jul/17/colin-baker-doctor-who-female-lead-doctor-jodie-whittaker-inspire-fans
The world we live in has a history of male domination, of stereotyping, of resistance to change, of playing it safe. Doctor Who has never been about that. The Doctor in all his incarnations has always been a passionate defender of justice, equality, fairness and resisted those who seek to dominate or destroy.
-
It was made in 1963 by a female and a gay Asian.
This series in particular has been extremely overtly lefty liberal politically.
People whinging about it are hilarious.
-
I've binge-watched the whole Castlevania series... which was like 100 minutes long. :-P I liked it, but it felt like an overdrawn intro sequence.
-
I stopped watching this current run with Smith took over (didn't like him). We might start watching again.

It's not as if it's even all that radical. Deep Space Nine had Dax (a character who had lived previous lives as male and female and was still called 'old man' by the commander despite currently being female) twenty years ago.
I stopped watching this current run with Smith took over (didn't like him). We might start watching again.
Smith was good at first, but became increasingly irritating. Capaldi was amazing but didn't get a consistently good series until the most recent one.

If that is your preferred era I think giving at least the Capaldi New Who a go. I haven't cared much at all for any of the new stuff really though I found Capaldi's Doctor more along the lines of what I liked out of classic stuff.
-
So...angry at....female Dr Who and.....impending....female...James Bond.....urge to kill......RISING
-
Daniel Crag has been announced as being in the next bond movie at least, so it's going to be awhile before any real worries about Bond becoming female.
Although frankly I'm in the camp that doesn't care. If the writings good and the adventures are fun I don't care what the alien shapeshifter looks like.
-
I dont want female bond before black bond.
I guess same ordering as US presidents?
-

Seconded. Honestly I don't understand what all the fuss is about, and I'm sort of disappointed at how the news of the doctor being a woman is completely overshadowing the fact that there's a new doctor. There's no change to existing lore- time lords turned into time ladies before, after all- so I honestly can't see why having a female doctor would be a bad thing. Or a good thing.
-
I'm most excited for it being good because I think it's important to have a different Dr than previous, for new opportunities.
youngest Dr Smith, to an old Dr Capaldi.
Male Dr Capaldi, female Dr whittaker.
Lets them put a new slant on the show.

I want Idris Elba to play James Bond one day. He is awesome!

I like how we now have to traverse along the checklist to change established fictional characters for maximum diversity.
Switching sexes on established fictional characters for reeks of neurosis and desperation over something that has nothing to do with the fiction or characters in the first place.
-
Often its about taking a new perspective on something and refreshing a franchise. They did it with gritty blonde bond.
I guess I have accepted that everyone is looking for a new angle on a tried and tested formula.
Its not a matter of a checklist, its a matter of what people find compelling to watch.
Isn't there a new doctor every 5 years? Not sure how thats newsworthy at all.

The actor who plays the doctor is indeed replaced every few seasons, and it is always exciting to see how the new one will turn out. But I'm disappointed about how that excitement is being drowned out by the outrage of people everywhere over the new doctor being a woman, which honestly seems like a mostly unimportant detail for a shapechanger.
The fact that people are getting so hung up about a woman taking the role this time (whether they hate or applaud it) makes no sense at all to me. I want to talk/read more about there being a new doctor and how Jodie Whittaker is a great actress (from what I've seen in Broadchurch) and how that's awesome and all that! Not get caught up in this entirely nonsensical debate between the "no girls allowed!" faction and the "we must ponder how amazing this is for the representation of women in media" faction.
Bleh. Oh well. Today I should be getting series 9 in the mail, so that's awesome :D!
-
I heard Richard Arodd....Richard Aerod.....That guy who plays Moss on the I.T crowd was a close second to play the next doctor. So instead of getting a black Dr Who, we've got another white one. So its ok to have a 'different' Dr; as long as she's white :eusa_wall:
Wait a moment. Why am I winging about it. I haven't cared much for Who is decades :icon_rolleyes:

That guy Moss - Richard Aerod was insanely funny in IT crowd

:icon_rolleyes:

Often its about taking a new perspective on something and refreshing a franchise. They did it with gritty blonde bond.
But there I think the casting plays second fiddle to the whole change in how to do a Bond film, ie a more modern action thriller type without Bond cliches. I've no problem with the new Dr Who but I agree to a point with patsy, also there was a certain amount of rar-rar bullshit to a Lady Dr Who which can be employed quite cynically, see Ghostbusters 2016, though I do feel the writers for this won't fuck it up. I mean it's not going to be the Minerva of Inspector Spacetime...

Seeing as how Steven Moffat is still in charge (as he has been since the first revival series in 2005), I doubt the level of writing will deteriorate much.

I thought he was leaving and from hard critics of the renewed series Moffat is a problem, at least as a show runner. He wrote good scripts yes but that was when you confined him to the time frame. Give him long runs/series and he will put out languid and uninteresting plots as he will lose focus.

Now that we are in the age of the Marvel Universe with movies, cinematic universes from both DC and Marvel, and even Netflix and WB shows. There is one superhero we need in our lives now more than ever!
The Tick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiFF18KblJ0)

Looks Cheesy as hell but intentionally. Its just so beautiful!

That looks intentionally cheesy to me
-
Holy crap. The Tick is back
All I can say is SPOOOOooon
-
I've also started watching the Goldburgs. It has several flaws. Still better than all the reality trash on the networks in my area keeping running
-
I forgot the Tick was released already.
-
I've also started watching the Goldburgs. It has several flaws. Still better than all the reality trash on the networks in my area keeping running
Ummm... no. And yes?
So Survivor is still great. Australian Masterchef final on sunday - has been a food season. Otherwise yeah, reality is trash.
However Goldburgs? Are they still making that? I dont get the appeal. At all. But I guess I don't really do any sitcoms because I think they are trash too.
-
My main 'reality' show is Forged in Fire. It essentially just Masterchef, but with blacksmiths instead. 4 guys have a couple of hours to make a fancy knife, then the final two have a 5 days to make a historical sword or weapon. I just love watching the blacksmithing.
-
The main appeal of Goldburgs seems to be [according to my customers] is Adams toy collection. Numerous 80's things are purposely placed in the background in order to attract viewers. All in all, the show is kinda clumsy. Its ignoring its characters in favour of nostalgia and it doesn't seem to be working. The shows philosophy seems to be "Lets ignore the characters and focus on those old toys in the background"
I still prefer it to reality TV though. Granted, the show is clumsy but two episodes that have made me laugh is the Transformers one and Fake I.D one
Barry is too thick to do basic maths and tries to use his Grandfathers I.D to buy beer[Barry is 17, masquerading as a 65 year old]
And in the Transformers episode. Adam tries to make a transformers episode[he makes his aged grandad get about in a poorly made robot costume] but worries about the old mans health. His grandad argues he is in peak health and insists on doing his own stunts
"I'm ok. I insist you run me over" he says
-
A new trailer for stranger things is out, I'm so looking forward to this in October: https://youtu.be/vgS2L7WPIO4 ( spoilers if you have not watched the first season) OH the 80's nostalgia overload :::cheers:::

I've watched season 1 of this show. Creeped me out to no end. :-P

Binged watched GLOW on Netflix over the weekend. I remember watching GLOW back in the late 80s when I was in high school, and the Netflix series did a good job of it. Was surprised how much I enjoyed it; the only other series I've watched in one sitting was Stranger Things.
-
@Texasyanky
I loved GLOW. Speaking as a writer; what amused me the most about the show was the absurd characters/personas of the wrestlers then the contrived reasons for them fighting. Oh yes and hearing Stan Bush's Dare sold me on the show

Not really tv but documentary. A collection of Noam Chomsky. This guy is incredible. A prof at MIT for 50 years, I think he says about everything I would like to say if I was a quarter articulate as he is. I would recommend looking him up and just listen. You might want to jump off a bridge when he's done but he's so down to earth and wise in the way of humanity. One of the few elite I really respect.
-
Started watching American Gods. It's been many years since I read the book (I remember enjoying it a lot), so I can't compare the two really - but the show is really fucking good. Very, VERY weird, and it requires a bit of "just accept this for now, you'll get it at some point" if you have no idea of the background, but great! It's a very unique show. Highly recommended.
-
Stranger things II next month :biggriin: started watching Black list ( Netflix) wow :::cheers:::
-
The Defenders are really good. Nice team up of MCU's TV stars. Definetly liked it.

On PBS ... "The Vietnam War" by Burns and Novick.
It just started last night, excellent first show, but missed most of this evenings. I'm enjoying the history, learning more than I knew before, and liking the inclusion of the various viewpoints.

My folks and I have been having a very interesting time watching it. They both remember it happening of course, and I knew the outline and most of the details, but some of the depth just blew me away. Especially in the first episode when their following the early French attempts. I knew it went badly, but never knew it went THAT badly.

I ended up catching the remaining portion of the second episode on Tuesday morning, glad I did. One take away from that was the incompetence of the officials in the Kennedy administration regarding the Vietnam issue. Blew me away at the mistakes made, and through items like one taking charge without permission, and Kennedy himself trusting yet not getting it an item correctly either. A mess of not understanding and underestimating the powers at work in Vietnam.

Yep, I was aware of the French failing, and saw it has another colonization attempt gone bad. But yes, they were not competent in handling the situation anyway, and the Americans seemed to repeat the mistakes. A total mess of might not always being right, and the recognition by the Vietnamese that if they kept the pressure up, and continually resisted, they could succeed. In a way, of not completely similar to the Amer. Rev.
-
Also ... found the idea that just the Americans calling themselves "advisors", probably more for political purposes back home, and the South saw them as working together, because they'd been fighting the north for years but didn't have the artillery and planes to cover themselves, to be very interesting. They didn't even want to stand next to the taller U.S. soldiers, because they felt it made the more of a target during the fighting.

After 3rd episode of Luke Cage, I must say that I really like it. Very cool atmosphere and the main lead is great as well. :smile2:

Yep! Its great! One of my favourites.

3rd thru 5th episodes of "The Vietnam War" have been excellent. Takes it into 1967. The first all American attack, the mess of it all developing, Hill 875 ... hmmm. Tet Offensive is next.

Supergirl season 2.
Is it any good? I've been watching Arrow seasons 1-4 and Flash seasons 1-2, as well as Legends of Tomorrow (first season), and I really liked them (well, most of them, anyway). If Supergirl is on the same level as those, I might need to check those series out as well.
Also the third season of Gotham arrived in the mail! Here's to hoping they haven't completely ruined it! Because let's face it, the last episodes of season two were getting weird.
-
Supergirl season 1 is pretty good. Its a good series to watch with a wife or daughter, because it has good empowering feminism messages which isn't common in a superhero tv show.
Almost finished season 2 and still enjoyable. Supergirl I think is a good choice, and there are some interesting support characters - primarily Jon Jones, but her sister is cool too.
To be honest, I find legends of tomorrow endlessly frustrating because of how they use and explain time travel.
Only seen Gotham season 1 and liked it.
-
A Netflix Disney movie called Ghosts in the Mountains. About snow leopards and following a mother and her cubs. To me there is no creature more beautiful, majestic blah blah than this cat. Thank god it's in such a hard place to get to as it provides some safety. Just one look at them and the tears start lol. It all started with this wildlife mag cover when I was 12 and it's been my favorite animal ever since.
-
Not sure if the show on the snow leopards is the same one I've seen on PBS, but it was very good!
-
Snow leopards are beautiful animals. I get what you mean.
I think I saw that doco too.
-
Wow, the Vietnam series is definitely showing how messed up things were during that war.

Well with my one day weekend (work being ridiculous) I've gotten through Stranger Things 2. Just as good as the first season. They are pretty good at hitting the homage button just right and not getting into the member berries issues. Though I will say the Aliens homage stuff started to push it.
-

DUDE totally agree I just finished watching it very good!! I really hope we do not have to wait a year for the next season.
-
I still need to watch season one of Stranger Things. People in my work are giving me shit for preffering to watch Steven Seagal's flicks over ST and Django. Damn...
-
I binged on Stranger Things 2 - It starts sort of weak, and builds up with tons of references to 80s films. Only sadness was I ran out of material to watch. I'll not spoil, go see it.
Two episodes into Walking Dead and I'm feeling the show is coming apart, siege episode last night was full of hollywoodism gunfights that were completely stupid utter bullshit down to the crappy audio work on the firearms. I was fighting to keep my eyes open and was glad it was over so I could go to sleep. I'm nearly up to date on the comic books and generally know what's to come which adds to the boredom of the show.
I Finished Westworld a week or so ago and enjoyed it more as the revelations appeared. I'm looking forward to season2 which is more classic Westworld.
-
west world ?? not heard of that

Amazon LOTR deal will “explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring,” with a potential spinoff series also included as part of the deal.
spinoff series- most likely do not want.
preceding fellowship = Hobbit? (feels a bit unnecessary but at least the films were shit, so could wipe those from our stank) Silmarilion? (never read it, at least not done on film, could be decent?)
random appendix bumf they shoved into hobbit= DO NOT WANT.
-
The Punisher premieres on friday. My favorite Marvel hero will get his own show - I'm psyked.
-
The Punisher I think is the best and most consistent Netflix Marvel show to date. Maybe it is because it isn't really about a 'super hero' and feels more like if Enemy of the State didn't have Will Smith as some lawyer type but some sort of action bad ass.
-
Watching Lucifer. Its pretty entertaining.
-
spinoff series- most likely do not want.
Doesn't sound like it's going to be Tolkien, anyway.
Live action fanfic?

The Punisher is great, easily the best MCU tv series so far. Gritty, brutal and with a great cast. A total lack of super heroes is a big plus.
-
Watching Lucifer. Its pretty entertaining.
Yeah first seasonwas okay, nothing to do with the comics though and after a while becomes a detective serie with a gimmick.
Just discovered Ray donavon, its a lot deeper then i thought after a first glance!
-
My fear is how far it goes with detective show with a gimmick. Hopefully it maintains its charm... not sure though, only 2 episodes into the second season.
-

Agreed. Best series I've seen in ages, in all aspects.
-
Punisher was amazing. Brutal and violent and also relentlessly and irrevocably SAD. I couldn’t stop thinking about my brother and his struggles with PTSD through the entire series.

The toys that made us [please read this first before judging me for watching a show about toys]
I used to work in toy stores and for a few years, I hocked old toys on ebay [often referred to 'plastic crack' in some circles]
Its an interesting show on how the big brand toy franchises all came about.
Oddly, my main reason for watching it was to see an old online buddy of mine. He used to work for Hasbro. We met online in an odd thread about obscure G.I.JOE's. We disagreed on a lot of stuff but I always respected him. The reason I unfollowed him online was because his opinions were attracting a lot of negative attention and I was sick of seeing them pop up in my inbox every morning. I miss talking to the guy. I was happy to see him on the G.I.JOE episode though.
Here's some stuff I found amusing after binge watching half the season.
The prototype Kenner Jawa was made from a sock [the designed spent the rest of the day, getting around with half a sock on one foot], the prototype Barbie was sculpted with nipples [which an executive promptly filed off as the brand manager found it offensive] AND a female G.I.JOE was sculpted with her top button undone. The sculptor did this on purpose and nobody else at Hasbro noticed.

Girl actually. That is Amazon queen Penthesilea. Right when he slew her he fell in love with her, and lamented killing her.

Achilles in Greek art ... http://www2.oberlin.edu/images/600H.JPG :icon_wink:
I thought Achilles being rendered in black in so much ancient artwork was him having been dipped in the River Styx and being invulnerable.
-
Black figure pottery art was a trend that presented many characters in black in contrast with a lighter background. There are plenty works of Achilles presenting him as white. I'm trying to find written material saying Achilles skin was darkened being dipped in the Styx. I grew up on greek mythology read to me in greek when I was a a toddler and later reading the same books learning how to read Greek. I never recalled anything suggesting his skin turned black getting his invulnerable upgrade.

I've looked through my mythology books and can't find anything suggesting black skin. For what that's worth.

Makes sense. If what I remembered were true, surely there would be painting of him in black with a white heel. :)

No, the body heat would thaw my frozen heart.
You gotta admit though, this is obviously another case of contemporary identity politics being imposed on history/myth.
-
Since I haven't seen the show, I'm wondering how so.
-
Because that Achilles doesn't look remotely Greek, and the BBC has a track record of doing this sort of thing.
-
Almost like when they had Scarlett Johansson play an Asian character in Ghost in the Shell?
What a world. Hollywood prefers white people to be everything, and BBC's making a black Achilles. :closed-eyes:
-
Almost like when they had Scarlett Johansson play an Asian character in Ghost in the Shell?
Yes, exactly like that.
-
Because that Achilles doesn't look remotely Greek, and the BBC has a track record of doing this sort of thing.
That isn't an answer with a fair level of evidence to convince someone.
-
I think examples of the BBC doing this thing before (ref. Margaret of Anjou and the Roman Britain cartoon) as well as several no-whites-need-apply job ads tells a fairly obvious story about internal policy.
-
So finally checked if Back was available on Amazon and as it was watched it. Liked it rather a lot and was happy to see it would get another series.

Does Heimdal in Thor get a pass because they are technically aliens?
-
I remember the Internet exploding when heimdal was first shown so I wouldn't say it got a pass.
I never got the Roman Britain cartoon. A ton of historians came out if the wood work to verify there would have been black Romans at Hadrian wall. We're taking about an empire that had huge chunks of Africa under its domain for hundreds of years.
-
Does Heimdal in Thor get a pass because they are technically aliens?
I think he gets a pass because he is Idris Elba. An accomplished actor.
I remember the internet exploding though. To be fair, he looks after the bifrost which is rainbow coloured, so he could be any coloured in theory?
Internet went off for the flame from Fantastic 4 too. I guess same as the Doctor being a woman?

That makes sense I guess. Legions would be from everywhere, however local populations would be easier to move. Where did that population go post empire?
-

Well from reading AskHistorians or SPQR for the most part, it seems that that population stayed. Plenty would have left as things decayed, but for the most part it seems they stated and eventually assimilated into later populations.
I know Mary Beard, who's one of the premier roman historians right now, wrote about the roman cartoon and showed the actual evidence for the 'man' in the cartoon. A roman officer from Africa who married a local and died during garrison duty. Seems like it was a pretty normal thing, but not exactly in huge number.

Unreleased pilot of The Orville :icon_mrgreen:
Surprisingly well done for a 16 year old in 1994 or whenever.
I tried watching The Orville. It was basically Star Trek with a bit more comedy. In other words, better than Star Trek.

Netflix - wreck of the unbelievable - doc about finding a sunken treasure of the coast of east Africa. It truly is unbelievable what they pull out of the waters and the historic pieces of art. Won’t tell you what it is because of the way it unfolds but definitely worth watching. Makes me want to head for Venice again.

A Greek myth. Wouldn't it make sense to cast a guy who looks Greek to play a legendary Greek character, rather than someone who looks African?
We both know that if there were no contemporary cultural race neurosis influencing the casting choice, they'd pick someone who looks like he's actually from the same continent as the character he's portraying.
Next up: A film about the ancient Yoruba demigod myth Aganju. Main character to be portrayed by Chris Hemsworth to assuage white identity politicians in 2018. No problem here, even though it would be pointless and less believable?

Not too long ago, when they mentioned possibly Idris Elba could be the next James Bond (before Daniel Craig agreed to sign on for a fourth film), I thought to myself "This just in! Playing the lead role in the re-make of the 1971 cult hit "Shaft", Matt Damon!" Funny thing is, I remember the outrage when they first cast Daniel Craig for Bond, and everyone was like "A blonde Bond?? Heresy!!!"

We both know that if there were no contemporary cultural race neurosis influencing the casting choice, they'd pick someone who looks like he's actually from the same continent as the character he's portraying.
Eh, I'm not thrilled with this Achilles stuff either, but I don't think they'd default to the same continent otherwise. Generally they'd just pick Generic Handsome/Beautiful White Guy/Girl for EVERYTHING unless they need some rough streetwise cop to be black.
-
Do we really need to get so upset over a TV show?
My philosophy is; if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it
-
Which is fine, but keep in mind that the BBC is state run, not private.
-
I actually find it quite amusing this bothers you so much.
funnily enough, you didn't post about Disney "browning up" white actors for alladin.
or ghost in the shell.
or carey mulligan replacing a latina character from the book in film version of Driver.
or ridley scott and mel gibson casting white actors for their bible films.

1. You're completely mistaking my objection for something more sinister. Regular white dudes with tans and black hair dye can pass as being of Levantine descent.
Exhibit A and B, screens from Mel Gibson's The Passion of The Christ:

If they didn't pass as middle-eastern looking, Mel Gibson probably wouldn't cast them, because he probably cares about how believable the actor is in his or her role. This means no Jet Li portraying Jesus Christ.
Exhibit C and D, screen from Mel Gibson's Apocalypto:

Notice how there are no Hebridean gingers or sub-Saharan Africans playing the roles of Mesoamerican tribesmen. Why is that, do you think? Perhaps there is a good reason not to cast pasty, freckled ginger Hebrideans as Aztec warriors.
I'll also note that I have the same opinion on GITS as I have with this, and that I did in fact post about it.
-
ah, so it's ok to whitewash people as long as it doesn't look like they have been. cool.
not overly much point continuing discussion. you call it cultural neurosis, I call it counterbalance to general media whitewashing and institutional racism.
Casting historical characters into different races is a different discussion.

ah, so it's ok to whitewash people as long as it doesn't look like they have been. cool.
There's a clear distinction between what Mel had done in Passion in the Christ getting capable actors to play roles vs the BBC casting White Greek Achilles as a black man to drive a racial political agenda. You want to back out of the argument because you have no ground to stand on. To note, I didn't like that ScarJo was cast as Motoko for Ghost in the Machine. This is a result of movie studios seeking superstars to carry a role to bring in audiences. Surprisingly most Japanese didn't have a problem with it and the movie had a good showing in Japan regardless.
Troy has been done to death in film anyway, I can live without watching cultural revisionist black Achilles.
-
Troy has been done to death in film anyway, I can live without watching any more.
FTFY
Would be better to have an Oddyssey or Aeneid show/movie/thing. Its at least fresher than Troy.
Although the Odyssey has had a few retelling and re-imaginings like "O Brother Where Art Thou" and "The Spongebob Movie." So arguably we're tapped out there too.
Just leave Homer alone for now.

I came here to heap adulation for the new Black Mirror season. I enjoyed each episode more or less but the Star Trek opener stood out in terms of humor and fun, I loved MetalHead as well but would have preferred it being filmed in color. Overall this has been my favorite season of Black Mirror and look forward to more.

Watched season one of Stranger Things. Very cool!
Season 2 is just as good. However, I am bias for 40-something Winona Ryder. Also, Samwise Gamgee will be annoying at first, but gets better. Watch for "Alien" jokes.
-
ah, so it's ok to whitewash people as long as it doesn't look like they have been. cool.
Again, your mode of thinking is different from mine. I don't care about whitewashing or blackwashing - I care about the actor being suited for the role. It's just a matter of convenience that a lot of pale people can get a tan and look more middle eastern than they really are. The opposite for black people is slightly less convincing - as evidenced by the documentary "White Chicks".
When you deliberately get someone who's less suited for the role to assuage real-world worries about "institutional racism", you're no longer telling a story, you're a state-funded broadcasting bureau making political propaganda. This is illiberal and short sighted, for reasons you probably understand.
The idea that you counteract nebulous "institutional racism" with actual institutional racism - i.e. BBC jobs where no white people may apply - is also confusing to me.
GiS comment:
"would have liked to see a japanese actor"
black achilles comment: "revisionism, pandering, tokenism, white guilt"
"contemporary cultural race neurosis"
Compare the motivation for the two decisions. They wanted Johansson for GITS not because there aren't enough white people in Japanese films - they got her because she's a big Hollywood star for a film marketed towards more countries than just Japan.
I.e. the reason was greed, not political race activism.
-
I agree with patsy on most of this.
That said, I don’t mind re-imaginings if they serve a purpose. One example could be binary swapping out all of the characters for a particular reason. I have no actual problem with the idea of all women Ghostbusters. I have heard the execution was bad, and personally I dont like Kristen Wiig or Melissa McCarthy, but to explore an idea of a full swap instead of token selection to have ‘representation’ is more interesting, and less politically motivated.
-
I've started watching Peaky Blinder and I'm enjoying it so far. Only four episodes into the first seasons, and it's not actually as graphic as I was expecting either which is a happy bonus.

My wife binged Peaky Blinder. She hates violence as well so that had me wondering but she couldnt get enough of this series.

Watched "The End of the Fxxxing World" on Netflix.
It was pretty good.

Agreee with you Warlord.
Sadly few women can match the charm and humor of Bill Murray or the goofy antics of Rick Moranis.
Good times! I didnt realize how cute Annie Pottts was back then..

your final conclusion that Being racist is OK if you're doing it because you're greedy more or less sums up why I think it's fine to go the other way tbh.
On the one hand you call institutional racism nebulous, yet on the other say films make more money with white people
Hmm.
-
No.
-
On the subject of Homer, I picked up the latest Simpsons dvd release [season 18] and most of the episodes are hard to watch more than once. As much of a fan as I am of the show, I wish Fox would let it go with dignity. The extra features which...feature cast and crew members are not fun to watch and or listen too; as they all sound tired and disinterested.
-
On the one hand you call institutional racism nebulous, yet on the other say films make more money with white people
Hmm.
I take it your claim is that institutional racism causes films with white people to make more money, or something to that effect. There are multiple explanations for this that are far more plausible than that of institutional racism.
1. Big Hollywood films are made in the US, which is majority white.
2. Hollywood films feature Hollywood stars, who are highly likely to be white because of point one.
3. The primary markets for Hollywood films is Europe and the US, who share the same cultural sphere more than other nations.
4. Hollywood stars sell tickets. Scarlett Johansoon is a ticket-selling name, and simply casting her is a marketing tool on its own. This applies to any major league actor whether it's Denzel Washington or Brad Pitt.
Furthermore, in the case of the BBC, your premise is not just incorrect, it's actually the opposite of what you claim. Quote:
Figures show in 2016, 13.4 per cent of the Beeb’s workforce are from Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities.
This is actually above figures from the 2011 Census results, which show 13.1 per cent of the UK population are from Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities.
And the licence-fee funded corporation aim to go one step further and increase Black, Asian and ethnic minorities to 15 per cent in their workforce by 2020.
But critics are questioning why the BBC is positively discriminating if they are already one of the “most ethnically representative employers in Britain”.
Source: https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/670266/BBC-advert-white-people-ethnic-equality-staff-job-internship
In summary: The BBC is in reality being openly and deliberately institutionally racist against white people - not black people. As such, any rationale for hiring black Achilles that is based on this supposition will be invalid.
your final conclusion that Being racist is OK if you're doing it because you're greedy
Incorrect reading of my statement. I think that it's not racist to inappropriately cast a white hollywood star for a non-white role as long as the motivation for doing so isn't racism. I also think it's not OK to cast white Hollywood stars in roles that they aren't appropriate for in order to make more money selling tickets. I think it's a detriment to the story being told.
If I hire ScarJo for a Japanese character GITS instead of some Asian actress because ScarJo happens to sell more tickets in the primary market of the film, then I'm a run of the mill greedy hack, but probably not a racist.
-

Probably when Margaret was still alive.

I'm wondering if there is a portrait of her painted during her time.

I've started with 'The man on the high castle', seems interesting.

Thank you. Wondering who the lady is she is shaking hands with in the first one, and who the kneeling priest is in the second.

That's a dude, king Henry.

Ah yes, I'll blame my error on moving along quickly. It appears they are being married by the priest in the center then. I'm wondering how old that picture is.

So the first one is about 50 years newer than the second one and made after her death, the second one was made around the time the depicted scene actually happened.

You could also blame it on the questionable quality of medieval illuminations.

Soooo... is Firefly really that good? I was thinking about checking it out.
-
Firefly is damn good. Starts off a bit rough IMHO and about 1/3 of the way through they really start finding their footing, and the rest is great. Its a western in space, and a mighty fine one at that. You grow to love the crew any their eccentrics. Its a shame they only got 1 season and a movie.
-
My parents, who don't really like sci fi, both love Firefly. My dad loves the western theme and my mum loves the characters. It's a really good show but be prepared for it to end in a really weird place. At least the movie gives a decent amount of closure and ties things up.

Just finished the last episode of firefly yesterday, damn i forgot how good it was. The characters, the storielines per episode and the mainplot! its all just awesome, even the Themesong..
YOU CANT TAKE THE SKY FROM MEEEE
Feanor is right though, it takes about 3 or 4 epsiodes to really take of! Think ill watch the movie tonight

Mindhunter: show about FBI in the 70's
Mindhorn: comedy about an obscure 80's cop show

Finished Mindhunter. Ed has a sizeable role in it. I'm betting Ted and John will appear in season 2 if that happens.

Ah a life of Pop Tarts and Coconut water, I quite enjoyed it. Shame Amazon canned it though.
-
I'm going to have a look at it, sounds fun!
My folks and I are currently going through a mix of Peaky Blinders, Father Brown, The Orville, Longmire (We had to take a break because it was getting to dark/Nihilistic) and Vikings. Sadly the glory that is Vikings has ended till the next half of the season comes. Vikings is probably our #1 show, above even Game of Thrones.
-
Re-watching Rome for what must be the fourth time.
-
Finished Mindhunter. If you have an interest in crime fiction and periodical stuff your bound to like.
I'm not to sure what to make of Ed's depiction in the series. One minute he's as nice as pie and the next...well....its [curse for intercourse] Ed Kemper
I've been thinking about something and I kind of hate bringing the subject up. John and Ted.....Ted and John [or Wingus and Dingus as I've taken to calling them] keep cropping up in the media. There's a South Park episode with them both in it, Ted [sort of] appeared in an episode of Venture bros
'Twisty' from American horror freak show was clearly a nod to John [very uncreative and disturbing if you ask me] AND Ted's getting another upcoming biopic this year :x [Jeff's getting one too] and I cant help but think WHY do people keep dragging up these two [dare I say it] clowns. Let them burn in hell I say. Do they keep cropping up because the public has an interest in these bozo's or am I being haunted by evil clowns?

Just finished AMC's, "Turn" on Netflix. Wow what a great show depicting the spy rings in both the British and Patriots armies during the American Revolution.

Sounds interesting. I have a fascination with military history. I often get into heated arguments with people as they have misconceptions about famous campaigns and battles [such as the Revolutionary and Civil wars]. Espionage is such an overlooked topic of the periods. I'll have to check it out

Watched Star Trek Discovery - 3 episodes so far. I like it.
Watched Altered Carbon - 1 episode. Not a fan of that type of Sci Fi.

its a great show, it does not go into the battles as it does the espionage acts. What I also liked is how they showed that people were there fighting for many reasons, freedom, unity, profit, and king. anyway check it out.

Turn was a really good show. I got a bit tired of some of the British being almost moustache twirling villains but as a loyal Canadian I might be a bit bias. (Plus Simcoe, the main bad guy, was pretty important up in my neck of the woods)
The espionage stuff I thought was all pretty well done, and generally a well made show.

Simcoe was a great bad guy and the end was pretty entrusting. I didn't think the Brits were all that way but It did show a bit of arrogance on their part.
-
Agreed. They needed some good bad guys, and I don't mind a show embellishing a bit to make it interesting. It certainly helps the atmosphere. I also enjoyed seeing Roger's Rangers actually get a mention in a show. I always thought they were an impressive unit.

I'll start to GM a Shadowrun campaign soon, so I looked around for something Cyberpunk-y to get in the mood - which led me to Altered Carbon.
I'm currently 4 episodes in and throroughly enjoying it. It looks great, the premise is interesting, the action is good (and suitably ultra violent), I like the cast, and the plot is interesting so far. It also has some very cyberpunk themes.
Looking forward to watching the rest of it!

Loved Altered Carbon. Can't wait for the next season.
I just finished watching The IT Crowd all the way through for the first time. Shit got weird at the end.

Quote canon: I just finished watching The IT Crowd all the way through for the first time. Shit got weird at the end.
That was a good show. Not sure if I made it all the way for the same reason but it started pretty good.
-
I never found IT crowd funny at all, which is slightly odd as individually I like the people in it.
-
I'm the same as Finlay. I like just about all the people, I watch them all the time in other stuff, but for some reason IT Crowd just didn't hook me. Maybe I'll try it again and see if it was just a mood thing. I was like that with Parks or Rec for the first season until it got better.
-
I never found IT crowd funny at all, which is slightly odd as individually I like the people in it.
Same.
But I also work in IT too.

I've started watching Gordon Ramsey shows as I work in a hotel and I like laughing at halfwits who don't know how to run a kitchen
-
Yeah, its not laughing at people who do or dont know IT... its more the characters are not funny and the points they make about IT are not great. Perhaps if I watched it at the time they were made it would have been more amusing, I don’t know.
-
I never found IT crowd funny at all, which is slightly odd as individually I like the people in it.
Yes, agreed. The actors are all good and it should be a good show. But apart from a few clever moments and the two boss characters it's not much to write home about.
Anyway, if you want to experience the pinnacle of comedic acting and writing, check out the live action version of "Prison School".
-
So watched Fallet on Netflix...reasonably amusing dramedy but is it some sort of Scandinavian inside jokes that Finns are insanely morbid people or something.
Also watched the new Luke Cage, season was one of the better Marvel Netflix series though the one where they throw Danny Rand in really dragged it down (perhaps more the baggage than anything).
-
I haven't read this thread in a long time, nor have I watched TV much lately. But I just finished a binge of the first season of True Detective and I loved it. It had its weak points. But it hit a lot of the right literary chords and fringe pop-culture spots for me.
I've been warned against watching the second season by multiple people whose opinions I respect quite a bit. And the internets. Thats a shame.
-

I've watched both and like both, I get the dislike since the two seasons are not the same crime show and the first is done way better. Now if you look at the second a 'heist gone wrong' sort, I think it works out.
-
Sleepy Hollow on Hulu ( sort of tongue and check) but im really getting into it....
-
GLOW season 2. Watched the first three episodes already

Nothing actually at the moment.

I am enjoying Disenchanted on Netflix at the moment.
-
I'm also watching Disenchanted and generally liking it. I'm curious to see what you guys think of it as well. I like it, but I also feel like it's playing it a bit safe. Jokes are good, but not that special. The characters are fun, but awfully close to Futurama. I don't see as many similarities to the simpsons, but it absolutely feels like Futurama to me. That's not a bad thing of course, Futurama is one of my all time favorite shows, but I'm looking forward to season 2 because I hope it will really branch out.
-
Watching Rome at the moment, finished S1e5 few evenings ago
-
I loved Rome.
-
I loved Rome.
So far it's good and fun to watch, but not the best of what I've watched.. and I put some questions on it being historically correct. But that's more a feeling then actuall research I did on it.
-
I loved lots of other stuff as well! I wasn't claiming Rome was 'the best'. :smile2:
-
Watching Fresh Prince of Bel Air funny, educational :D and never seen it before.
I tried Brooklyn Nine-Nine but it seemed really simple. Not sure if I should give it a little more time for characters to develop or something, but too simple atm.
Arrested Development relative funny, and a little more complex that Brooklyn Nine-Nine?
I am not much of a series/movies expert, so what do you suggest?
I loved Dr. House, was okay with breaking bad, and which there was more Blade.
-
disenchanted was dreadful. didnt get past 1st episode.
The Good Place is incredible.
Better call saul season 4 high quality as per usual.
New season of Bake off just started- nice contrast with Better call saul!

Still one of my favorites. Not totally accurate, but not too far off either. Better than I'd expect for most popular historical TV series or movies.
I watched a few trailers for Disenchanted and that killed any interest I had in it.
My 7 year old daughter and I have both been home sick all week. She introduced me to Trollhunters. She keeps bouncing around between a half dozen shows and I keep saying, "hey, how about more Trollhunters." (Not working...) One of the more enjoyable kids shows I've seen in a while!
My my wife, a friend, and finally I started watching the new Twin Peaks series a couple weeks ago. But our friend went on vacation, then the above mentioned sickness set in and now I'm aching to get back to more. Only watching the first two episodes, but I'm curious to see more. (Loved the original 2 seasons.)
-
Every Twin Peaks series is ace, says a man in a pub. (Me.)
-
Watched Final Space. Enjoyed it a bunch actually.
-
I cant sit through any Roman themed show without dropping Monty Python quotes
I tried watching Brooklyn 99 but found it too similar to Family guy. I just couldn't watch it.
ALSO decided to watch GLOW season 2 [again] I might have 80's exhaustion but I still love Glow.
-
Stan vs. Evil ( campy but so fun) very Ash vs. Undead :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

Disenchantment on Netflix. Its pretty funny if you're a fan of D&D, GoT, Conan the barbarian, or any fantasy setting. It takes awhile to find its footing but its pretty good. The last 3 episodes really drew me in and I just found out I missed the post credit scene from the final episode which gives a further "What?!" to the season ending. Unlike Futurama or the Simpsons it has a serial story as opposed to an episodic one. It has the same humor as Futurama but more raunchy since it isnt on TV (always look at the signs and backgrounds!). I can't wait to see season 2 after all the craziness and mystery that has been built up by the end of season 1. That's another thing, netflix didn't list it as "season 1" but as "part 1" and the next season is called "part 2." I found that an interesting decision. Maybe they planned to wrap it up after 2 seasons (parts)?
-
Take it with a grain of salt, but I was reading at one point that this is season 1, and they were waiting for that final episode to determine if they'd do a season 2 or a second half of season 1. I was reading this a month or two ago, but they were saying that if it's not well received they would take a break, rejig it and come back for season 2. If it WAS fairly well received they'd order another half to make each season about 20 episodes and not wait for a season 2.
-
I've finished the second season of Luke Cage. It was really enjoyable and the ending had a nice twist to it. Mike Colter really brings this character to life.
-
Meh.
I find Luke Cage super boring.
We smashed out Ironfist last week though. I found it fun and entertaining.

I just finished watching Netflix's Origins of the mob. Its an interesting look at how the 'Lucky' Luciano and Al Capone came to power.
-
I watched Hilda with my kids and we all loved it, definitely gonna get some of the comics.
-
I'm really waiting for the season 3 of Daredevil. The previous two were very solid and fun.

I just found out today that Hilda is voiced by Lyanna Mormont!

I've been seeing a lot of "Goblin Slayer" on imgur and the memes got me interested. I signed up for crunchy roll (with ads) and watched the first 2 episodes. I was prepared for the brutality of the first episode (there's a rape scene and anytime a kidnapped girl is with a goblin rape is implied) thanks to the fair warnings from imgur. Its just straight up brutal violent too. I do find it interesting that the concept of the story comes from MMOs where an inexperienced party pulls too many adds and it destroys the party. The same sort of thing happens. Its also interesting just how many goblin extermination jobs there are and yet all the experienced adventures avoid goblin jobs since they see its beneath them. The only ones going after the goblins are the rookies (that usually end up dead or worse) and goblin slayer. Since no one is taking the goblin jobs, the goblins are becoming a real problem that no one wants to deal with. He's looked down on by the other veterans as his gear looks dirty and crappy but the first episode illustrates that its all practical and perfect for goblin slaying and fighting in tight caves. Goblin Slayer doesn't care though. He just wants to kill goblins. He's essentially DOOM guy (https://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/scale_small/1/16944/2976258-cmzr9taucae3_np.jpg) but in a fantasy setting. Never removing his armor let alone helmet. Even his introduction moment has doom like music. I'm only on episode 2 but from the memes on imgur I know that he also attracts a harem of women, but its a harem subversion (so far) as he's not interested or flustered by the women. He's only concerned about killing goblins and finding new ways to kill goblins. Also fair warning there is a bit of TnA to titillate viewers. Its very pandering at times, especially with Goblin Slayer's childhood friend that he stays with. Expect physics defying bounces.
-
Watching more goblin slayer. It looks like Goblin Slayer was trained by Bilbo Baggins. :eusa_clap:

The next episode is called "There and Back Again" I am willing to bet we'll see more memories regarding the Burglar of Bag End
Admittedly he looks a bit goblin or rat like, but he's a halfling thief.

Knight-fall on Netflix pretty cool.. a little history, rumor, and fiction, with a hint of the supernatural good so far.

Just finished last season of Shetland. Man, if you like the English small town murder
industry mystery dramas, this is a great show for you.
My love of the English small town murder mysteries has left me reluctant to visit again. Chances are nearly 100% I would be the victim OR discoverer of a dead body if I ever go to a village ever again.
Although, those are the same odds I would be the victim of a serial killer in the US. If TV drama is anything to go by, everyone is either a Serial Killer, a victim being stalked, a victim who survived or a emotionally abused Special Victim Crime Special Scene Investigator Consultant Special Unit officer hunting them down. Oh, or a retired SVCSSICSO who is embittered/hunted/become a hunter/blackmailed. Really don't like those odds.
I will stay in Canada. Although the number of Moose attacks is on the increase.
Anyways, Shetland, Good, Well Acted, Not going to Visit.

My new place comes with basic cable. I finally saw the Orville last night. It was really good and very star trekky, especially the ending.

has anyone watched Project Blue book?
-
good place season 3- great, as usual.
Sexual education- pretty enjoyable teen drama, weird aesthetic as it was set ostensibly in the UK but extremely american style.
Cuckoo and Killing Eve up next

good place season 3- great, as usual.
Yep!
-
Holy shit.
I just watched another episode of the Orville and the plot was similar and executed better than a particular TNG episode. A crew member develops feelings for the Robot crew member and they start a relationship. It felt so...good. It was done better than the Data's girlfriend episode. It was just wonderful and sparked feelings and wonder like when I was a kid watching TNG.
This show has no right to be this good but Fox has really outdone themselves and got their own Star Trek show. Its really weird that they pitched or advertised the show initially as family guy star trek because the last two episodes I've watched is really different from that. I may be a bit biased as I have only seen 2 episodes but it just makes me want to watch more. I look forward to Thursdays now to watch it.
:eusa_clap:
-
I've seen a couple of episodes further back. It struck me as a bit of a spoof of Star Trek. Not that it was bad though.
-
I'm excited for the two part conclusion tonight on the Orville. Worth a watch.
The Kylons sound just like the Geth from Mass Effect when they were data processing. Was really cool. I think in a way Issac is Legion from ME.
-
Watched the Orville's conclusion to the 2 parter "Identity"
It was freaking amazing! It had a great story with a pretty legit space battle on par with the battle for earth from ME3.

My daughter triple binged on Hilda. Watched it on Netflix three times within just a few weeks. I saw quite a few of them and enjoyed them quite a bit. Wouldn't mind seeing the whole series to fill in the blanks, to be honest. Similarly, she got me watching Troll Hunters with her for a while, but she lost interest about 3/4 of the way through the series -- I'm tempted to finish it on my own!
I don't watch much grown-up TV.
My wife and I are both big Twin Peaks fans, and David Lynch fans in general. We just finished watching Twin Peaks: The Return and appear to be in the minority of people who absolutely hated it. There were certainly some great parts of the series, but it wasn't worth sitting through all the garbage to get to the good parts. A friend who was also a big fan started watching with us, but dropped out around episode 5 because she was smarter than us.
Looking forward to the next seasons of American Gods & Game of Thrones.

Ever since we got HBO to watch Game of thrones, Fraggle Rock is on HBO around the time we try to put my 1yo daughter to bed. Unlike other shows where she doesn't care to watch and gets fussy (Except TNG, she loves Picard's voice) she has been utterly entranced with the Fraggles. I've never seen her so enthralled in a TV show since TNG. I haven't seen Fraggle rock since I was a kid on the Disney channel (when the cable company would give it to us for free for a week to entice new subscriptions which only happened once a year if we were lucky). I am just so excited that she likes it. We almost didn't watch it yesterday (her first time watching it) because my wife was worried it would be too loud for her to fall asleep to. I asked her to give it a chance and sure enough my daughter was glued to watching it while drinking her milk and was ready for bed by the end of it.

So when Prime added HBO as a subscription option some years back, I saw HBO had all of Fraggle Rock. Subsequently I went to sleep that night watching Fraggle Rock. Quality Henson stuff right there.

Darn why doesn't our HBO (on Demand that is.. we don't have a channel anymore.. somehow) have that!.. Love the Fraggles!

Netflixbinging on "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries". Yes, yet another amateur murder solving sleuth. Its light and fun and set in late 20's Australia.
Who knew Australia in 1927 had so much high society? I didn't. It has all the usual story plots, and all usual stereo-types. But its fun and silly and I get to play "Who do you think is the culprit?" with the wife.

So has anyone heard of this show on syfy called "Krypton" that takes place 2 generations before the events of Superman? I have never heard of it but Season 2 just premiered. Zod and his followers look a lot like NOD troops from C&C Tiberium Sun so it piqued my interest.
As far as I can tell Val-El, patriarch of the El family, is arrested and executed by the corrupt leadership of Krypton. The El's are stripped of their noble privileges and forced to live in the slums. Val-El's son, Seg, figures out that his father was arrested because he found a terrible secret. Then some people from the future come back in time to save Krypton. An earth man named Adam Strange and General Zod.
From what I can tell its one part Dune, one part Red Faction, and a dash of Game of Thrones. Val-El is even played by the same actor as Barristan Selmy from GoT.
Edit: Oh, also the actor that plays Zod sounds VERY similar to Patrick Stuart, at least in the speech I heard him give in Season 2's premier. I may go back and watch season 1.

So, youtube suggests the weirdest things sometimes. Recently it suggested episode 6 of the series Super Science Friends which I had never heard of before. So I watched it. Holy butts it was good! The premise is basically famous scientists throughout history team up as a super hero team.
Winston Churchill ends up Nick Fury-ing the whole thing by getting Nikola Tesla (Electric powers and Tech) Marie Curie (Radiation Powers that functions like a green lantern ring) Charles Darwin (the ability to morph into animals), Sigmund Freud (Telepathic, but only regarding people's sexual thoughts), Tapputi (As the world's first chemist she can make tonics and perfumes), and Z3 the first computer. They were lead by Albert Einstein (Who was a super saiyan?) before he was murdered. Churchill clones him and now he's a teenager. They team up and fight zombie cosmonauts, Thomas Edison, and even Shiva. It looks like the first 5 episodes have a more internet comic design to them and episode 6 is an anime. Honestly the anime episode 6 is very well done. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a one off though.

Saw some of these with my daughter and loved them. She's binged on them at least 4 times in the past 6 months.
My wife and I just finished Good Omens. A lot of fun. More on target and more entertaining than American Gods has been. (Sadly -- I loved boht books.)
I want to post a GIF of my favorite scene, but at the risk of revealing spoilers, I'll just post this tiny part of it -- hopefully those who have seen it will know what I'm getting at. ::heretic::

half way through good omens and really really enjoying. So silly but perfect, tonally.
iirc, the book shifts slightly away from being so focused on aziraphale and crowley in the later stages and suffered for it, so will be interested to see if the show stays so strong.
-
I finished Good Omens on the weekend and loved it. SO much better then American Gods turned out. I was quite disappointed with the changes in American Gods, but the changes in Good Omens come across much better and less intrusive. I was particularly bothered when I heard that Gabriel, who's not a character in the books, would become a 'main' character, but it actually turned out to be well done.

So I mentioned before (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=51402.msg1043440#msg1043440) that I have been watching Fraggle Rock with my 1 year old, and by golly is this show awesome. I did watch a bit of it as a kid, but now seeing it with adult eyes I am amazed at some of the subject matters and writing done for what is essentially a kids HBO show. For example there was an episode where Boober and Red get trapped in a cave in and there isn't much hope of rescue, so the talk about death and how they are ready to die. That's some heavy shit to drop on a kid! Especially by today's standards for kid shows, but they handled it very well that not only a kid could understand but learn from. There was another episode dealing with Doozers and their society norms being challenged by someone that didn't want to do Doozer work. Not because she was lazy as other Doozers would mock her about, but because she would rather draw and design instead of build. There is also a couple of straight up terrifying episodes like when the two rat characters leave the Trash Heap and end up getting abducted by an evil guy that wants to enslave them, and another where this blob thing rolls into town and eats Doozers. I am just amazed at how well written these episodes are. The characters are great too. As a kid I really liked Gobo and Wembley but watching it now I am realizing that Boober is probably the best character out of the main 5 Fraggles. Every one of his episodes are just very well done. I don't think I appreciated his character as a kid because he always seemed like the coward "scaredy cat" guy whereas Gobo was brave. Red is probably the worst character of the group but her flaws allow her to learn how to be a better person albeit stubbornly. We're a ways into season 3 so far, but wow this is probably the best HBO series of all time.

"The Boys" looks interesting:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06rueu_fh30 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06rueu_fh30)
The premise is a CIA black ops team is put together to "take care" of any superheroes that get out of line. I know its based off a comic series.
The series is set in a world where superheroes exist. However, most of the superheroes in the series' universe are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. The story follows a small clandestine CIA squad, informally known as "The Boys", led by Butcher and also consisting of Mother's Milk, the Frenchman, the Female, and new addition "Wee" Hughie Campbell, who are charged with monitoring the superhero community, often leading to gruesome confrontations and dreadful results.

We did season 1-3 in about a month. So good.

As mentioned before, I had read Good Omens fairly recently, but my wife had me wait to watch the show until after our child was born (old world superstition) so we finally watched it. I couldn't help but compare it to the book the entire way through and I must say I like the book better, however the show is also good. They add new scenes to give the book readers something new to see instead of beat by beat the same story. The ending is essentially the same thing but they go about it differently after the climax. My two biggest complaints about the show 1) the Narrator's pacing (I felt the audio-book had better pacing regarding the narration, and the show narration just seemed rushed) 2) The story seemed rushed. It could be that to me it seemed like it took the entire last week of earth to get through everything whereas the show makes everything happen over the course of the last 3ish days. Now I must admit these are nitpicks and that is one advantage the book will have over any TV show or book is plenty of time to delve into everything. There were many more nit picks I had, but they are just nit picks because I like the book and YMMV. The show was still great and the new things they did, they did well.
-
I was a big fan of Good Omens as well. Very similar, I still like the book more but the show was very well done. Crowely and Aziraphale had excellent casting and played off each other very well.
I'm rewatching the Expanse to get ready for Season 4 coming later in the year, and I've managed to get my folks into it as well. All I had to do was put the first episode on in the background while people were sitting around and within ten minutes its all "What is this?", "Oh this looks cool." etc.
-
good omens TV definitely weakened as it strained it's time constraint to fit in the conclusion.
I enjoyed it, but episode 6 was weak.
-
Justified, seasons 1 to 6, have been very enjoyable, while I painted!!!
-
I tried to watch Glow season 3 and gave up.
Everyone else has complained [at great length] about the pointless and needless sexual politics in it. My biggest complaint would be the camping episode. I mean, come on. A group of city girls go camping for the weekend and they DONT panic when It gets dark AND they manage to erect their tents immediately. I fond it harder to swallow then the 19 year old who was selling movie scripts
-
Anyone checked out "Primal" yet on Cartoon Network's late night line up Adult Swim? I just caught the ending half of an episode. Its pretty dope. Its like the Conan the Barbarian stories/novels but if Conan was a caveman and teams up with a dinosaur. Its very brutal. Its made by the same guy that created Samurai Jack, Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, The Original 2d Clone Wars series, and Hotel Transylvanian. Definitely worth a watch!

I can't help it! I don't have another show to watch in that time slot, when I am winding down from the weekend. So I keep watching, wishing it would get better.
-
Watchmen is kinda dumb but moderately intriguing.
His Dark Materials seems fine so far.
The Mandalorian was cool but a bit disconcerting. I still don't know if I like the main character but the worldbuilding and the ambience is great.
Mr. Robot is weaker than before but still good.
The Man is the High Castle is serviceable if a bit cliché.
Silicon Valley still is cracking.
That's all I'm watching right now.
-
The Witcher was okay good bits and bad bits. Though I hate that during the the bad bits I kept thinking that the old Polish TV series with Netflix budget would have been better.
Main gripe is Foltest, the books do an amazing job of both giving you a bunch to be absolutely revolted by the guy and then wed that to that he still has good qualities. The prefect grey character for a world very much about grey. This show not so much.
-
Honestly, I found the Witcher show to be quite good. My expectations were dirt-low after the trailers, but Cavill was decent in the role, the rest of the cast was good, the directing and cinematography were serviceable, and the script is quite good; the way they weave the first plot threads along the first season was clever.
But I was watching it with a friend and he didn't get half the plot. There's a lot of tell don't show involving kings and queens you've never seen or heard about before.
And I can't help but feel that the game still has one of the best production designs ever. The show pales in comparison, but it does try.
Pleasant surprise.
-
As a naitive Polish speaker and a big fan of the Witcher book series I must admit I am a bit disappointed.
Book Geralt is a much wittier, more likeable character than Cavil's interpretation leads us to believe. He has his brooding moments for sure, but he is NOT Conan with batman's voice.
That being sad, Cavil's performance is the least troubling aspect. The story itself has been jumbled needlesly by forcing Ciri in early and expanding Yennefer's part to the point where I feel she's much more of a protagonist than Geralt. I'd much preffer having more time establishing the witcher as a character, than sitting through ciri pointlessly walking around forsests for most of the season. You know, the ole 'We HAVE to give her something to do, while we wait for the story to catch up'. Always a great idea.
As a result, many great, memorable moments have been cut or altered for no understandable reason and the whole thing feels very two-dimmensional. Not impressed Netflix!
-
The Scout Trooper opening to the last episode this season of the Mandalorian is comedy gold

We're halfway through the Witcher and so far its pretty good. We're not familiar with the source material, even though I have Witcher 3 on steam (I never got around to it) it definitely make me want to load it up and try it out with the Mrs. spectating.

I've had a rewatch over the holidays and I stand by my good and bad issues with the series. I think the major issue is that they wanted to steam roll the first two short story set up novels to get to the core 5 book saga. Which I then leave to the next season to help but the first with say a 10 episode run and a more faithful story retelling and not working in the Ciri bits until midseason would have been far better.
In general the extra Yen time works out fine and is done in a way that can work well enough it is the Ciri (and Niflgaard attached to it) stuff which really makes for the worst bits.
Also do play the Witcher 3 it is quite the game. You would add to the insane bump the show has given Steam stats since the series came out, topped out at 95 thousand active after release has managed 72 thousand in the week since the show came out, 4.5 years after release.

Re-watching the Ozark before the next season is released.
EVERY character on that show is evil. I hope they all meet their ends fittingly; especially that super bitch cartel lawyer.
-
Watched the first episode. Seemed like a more drama filled, no laughing, and more consquence filled version of Arrested Development.
I like Arrested Development. Ozark seemed too heavy for me. Almost like trying to be the next Breaking Bad. And I didnt watch or like Breaking Bad.

Started watching Dark on Netflix. One of my new favorite shows. I jokingly refer to it as ”Stranger Peaks”.
It defaules to English dubbed because we're in the US and partway through the first episode I told my wife, ”I don't know if I can keep watching this if they don't have an option for subtitles with original audio. Luckily they did and it was a vast improvement. We've watched 7 episodes of the first season so far.
On the topic of audio tracks, the sound reminds me of a Aronofsky film, and in particular the repetitive music reminds me of Requiem for a Dream. But where that soundtrack was drilling home cruel, tragic reality, this one drives you further into the dark (right?) unknown.

So I finally took the plunge and started Castlevania on Netflix. I finished seasons one (4 episodes all about 25 minutes long) and have started season 2 (8 episodes). They just released season 3 which is 10 episodes.
Wow. This is good. The best way I could describe it is: its and adult Avatar the Last Airbender if it was written by the guys from Metalocalypse. I get A:TLA feeling when the team interacts with each other, the humor (but on an adult level), how one user uses magic looks like bending, and with Dracula being like the Fire Lord the team is trying to take out. The setting, subject matter, and visual brutality is more like a serious version of Metalocalypse. It does not pull punches with the brutality when all hell breaks loose (literally). Expect gore. I wont spoil it, but of the 4 episodes of season 1, the first episode sets up the story with episodes 2-4 about the team forming and their backgrounds. Its loosely based off the game Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse for the NES. Its surprisingly good.
I found it funny that all priests, bishops, and archbishops dress like modern day Cardinals. Historically speaking, I do believe the Catholic church was not influential in Wallachia during that time period (or ever), it should be the Eastern Orthodox church. Also based on the years given, Dracula (Vlad III) would be the ruling Prince of Wallachia. But hey its a fantasy story from an 80s NES game so w/e. Its just fun.
Definitely worth a watch.

Ozark season 3 was quite sluggish. I was hoping it would wrap everything up but it seems set for another season.
Fortunately, Helen Pearce got what she deserved!
-
Me and the wife have started on Fairy tail. We have plenty of stuff to see now
-
PBS ... "World on Fire".
And "Baptiste".
-
By the way ... Sean Bean is in "World on Fire". I'm told before taking the part he asked if his character dies in it, and was told no, so he decided to take the part. :icon_cool:
-
Finished both seasons of Dark. On of my favorite shows in a while.
Sic Mundus
-
I think Richard Sharpe is the only one of Sean Bean's characters not to die.
-
Has anyone seen the TV show that is shown in this video ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9hFxE2GlmU
-
I finally got around to watching Good Omens. It was... disappointing. Not bad as such, but Terry Pratchett's absence definitely showed.
-
I just watched Picard and The Witcher. As a person who enjoyed the games and the books, The Witcher was terrific. They nailed the casting. The time hoping would have been super confusing for anyone who hadn't read the books though. I liked that most of the episodes were focused around one of the short stories.
-
My wife and I started Tales From The Loop (Amazon original series) this week. I've been a big fan of the art/artist who inspired the series.
Unfortunately after three episodes, we're both done. They're all image, no substance. And even then there's like one or two "settings" of a month minute or less inspired by the art, but otherwise its irrelevant. Mostly irrelevant. There's one plot twist that they seem to fail to follow up on. We both found the show really boring, and the narcissistic central characters annoying and predictable.
So now we will be looking for our next fix.
In terms of children's shows, our daughter (8) got us all watching Kipo, Age of Wonderbeasts (Netflix original) which I'm completely on board with now and looking forward to a season 2.
-
I'm watching Chernobyl at the moment. And I must say, I really like it. It is a sad story, for sure, but I think they hit the nail on the head.
-
Finished "Gravity Falls" and it is phenomenal! Worth watching no matter how old you are. Honestly, certain episodes seem to be too scary for kids, especially near the end when an eldritch horror takes center stage. I wont spoil it but the premise is pretty cool. Twins Dipper and his sister Mabel are dropped off for the summer at their great uncle (Grunkle) Stan's tourist trap, The Mystery Shack, in Gravity Falls Oregon. While working at the Mystery Shack, Dipper comes across a secret journal detailing all the strange creatures and phenomena that occurs in Gravity Falls. Dipper's summer long quest is to find the person who wrote the journal, Mabel's is to make some great summer friends and to have a summer romance. The mystery twins fall into some crazy adventures that all lead to secrets to finding out what is happening in Gravity Falls and what happened to the author of the journal. It has everything, zombies, UFOs, ghosts, cryptids, mythical creatures, secret government coverups, the works! Totally check this out if you have Disney + (cough*cough*or*other*means*cough*cough).

I'm a big fan of gravity falls.

I'm watching Chernobyl at the moment. And I must say, I really like it. It is a sad story, for sure, but I think they hit the nail on the head.
Chernobyl was great. I picked up a HBO subscription last spring for Veep and then Game of Thrones. Chernobyl really made me fell better on paying for the second month after how bad the end of Game of Thrones was.
-
I'm enjoying Bosch.

I still haven't seen the last season, they lost me somewhere along the way. I hope I will find time in the holidays to finish those.

Watching Snowpiercer on Netflix.
Normally Netflix series (or similar) have great ideas, but go down for lack of budget. Conflict is really artificial, and it just goes downhill really fast. Snowpiercer so far it has been pretty nice, and looking forward for the next big "issue".
Jennifer Connelly will always been great to watch both her acting and her looks.
-
Currently, i'm watching How to sell drugs online. But i just finished snowpiecer which was a great tv show. And i advise everyone to watch The boys or to read the comics. One of the best i've ever seen. So much joy on tv nowadays ^^
-
So we have been binging Smallville during lockdown. We never watched it when it was on, but always liked that version of Lex Luthor. The first few seasons really followed the same style as Buffy, but later on you can see where they were heading and how they now created the Arrowversw off the back of it.
Also, we just finished Suits and starting season 2 of Umbrella Academy.
-
I started something from Transformers on Netflix. And animated series and I must say, I like it.
While painting, I also watched: Fastest Car and From Rust to Richest.
-
I just finished the first season of Letterkenny on Hulu. Its pretty good. Like a modern day King of the Hill but in Canada with 20 somethings that live on a farm. Its pretty much not intended to have kids in the room. Lot of risque language and situations. I would also suggest watching with subtitles. They talk rather fast. Theres different factions in Letterkenny, the Hicks, the Skids, Hockey Players, and Natives. They all have interesting interactions and intersecting stories.
Here's a clip to get an idea of the show.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM5SJrSIbeE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM5SJrSIbeE)
-
I'm a huge fan of Letterkenny. Coming from a small town, so much of the show is surprisingly accurate. I know people that nearly match with almost every character.
-
Almost finished Umbrella Academy.
Gee its easy to binge.
Always want more than 10 episodes, but don't want to sacrifice on storytelling or anything so it is what it is.
Who doesn't love Five or Klaus. Best characters hands down.
-
I watched season 1 of Umbrella Academy and liked a lot of it, but wasn't super happy with the ending. But I've been told by a lot of people that Season 2 is WAY better, and fixes a lot of the issues I had with season 1.
-
Just started The Witcher. Watched the first 4 episodes this week. It's OK so far.
-
My wife and I quite enjoyed it. Its like a grimdark version of Kevin Sorbo's Hercules or Lucy Lawless' Xena. I think we enjoyed the humor and mystery (having never read the books or played the games before) more so than the overall plot. The plot seemed to be more of a set up for season 2 than anything to stand on its own by introducing everyone and their back stories as well as getting them all together.
-
My wife started watching it, then got me to watch (started back at the beginning.) Neither of us read the books or played the games.
Seems a bit Elric of Melniboné meets The Man With No Name. I just started reading the first Black Company book and I also couldn't help finding a few minor similarities to what I've read so far. But Ive barely scratched the surface of either that book/series or the Witched yet.
Like I said, so far it's OK. Not great, but I definitely want to keep watching.
-
I enjoyed the Witcher. Not the best show ever, but still a pretty solid action fantasy. Plus I quite like Henry Cavill, its a shame Man From Uncle didn't do better.
-
Can't wait to see what's up with these MILFguard people.

I'm watching third season of Outlander. Better than second season, the screen writing as progressed. I enjoyed the initial half of 1st season, but 2nd half of 1st season was not good, had to push through some of the episodes, quite poorly written in places. The screen writing improved for the second season, thank goodnesss. The third season has had ok with episodes 1 & 2, while 3 thru 5 have been quite good.

To be fair, I found it annoying at first and then it grew on me, but YMMV. It became such a meme too. Its so tied to the show its like saying "Winter's coming" and knowing its from GoT.
Low key, Jaskier reminds me of Jean Ralphio from Parks & Rec and I loved every minute of it.

Not really a tv show but a comedian on Netflix. Tom Papa. I think he is my favourite comic going at the moment
-
Cobra Kai came to Netflix...wasn't going to spring for paying to watch it but I thought the concept looked entertaining and figured I'd give it a shot.
So good. Haven't finished Season 1 yet, but I definitely do not regret a minute spent watching it yet.
-
Started Westworld this weekend, so far seems good.
-
Finished S1 of Witcher. Evaluation still the same. It was OK. I'll definitely watch another season, but it's not like I'm a rabid fan.
My wife is looking for the next series to watch -- I offered to re-watch The Mandelorian with her. I enjoyed that series far more than the last three movies or Rogue One. (Still haven't seen Solo yet.)

Same.
We binged season 1 over the weekend. High quality show.

Just got into:
"Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing"
Two old geezers and comedians who have both had heart problems, and have decided to relax and 'adjust' by Whitehouse taking Mortimer to some beautiful waterways in the British Isles and introducing him to fishing.
Very funny banter, and stunning scenery.
Of course I can empathise with the two participants, but it is still great.
It's a BBC programme - one of the very few unpoliticised or unbiased ones. :closed-eyes:
-
That does sound like a good one! :icon_biggrin:
Probably won't get it around here. :icon_sad:
-
Gone fishing was smashing. I loved it. Such an atmosphere! Rural, gentle, tranquil. Like the 'shire' oin LotR.
Midaski, have you seen the BBC series 'Detectorists'. Fictional, yes, but has a similar gentle feel. Almost magical. Mundane lives, and yet I want to live next door!
-
Finished Cobra Kai season 2.
Such a great show, but gee that ending was a shock.
Now looking to finish Lucifer and Smallville in the next 2 weeks probably.
-
On episode 3 of 'Kingdom' on Netflix. Pre-gunpowder (I think) Korean Zombie story. Get past episode 1, with its set up, and woah!
I hope it stays this good.
Has anyone else seen it (if so, do say, but no spoilers please!)
-
Halfway into watching season 2 of Gravity Falls with my daughter (9) and it's become one of my new favorite kid's shows.
-

Liked season one a lot, two not so much. There is gun powder though, the one guy has a matchlock at some point.
-
I started watching Kingdom and liked it, but my folks didn't and never got around to watching it by myself.
Gravity Falls is fantastic and I loved it.
-
There is gun powder though, the one guy has a matchlock at some point.
That makes sense as my friend who recommended it said it was from the early gunpowder era. But after two episodes in which many soldiers were involved but there was no sign of any gunpowder weapons I assumed I must have misheard him.

The Crown.
People say its fictitious, and I’m sure it takes a few artistic flourishes, but who actually knows anyway other than them how it was, and why would they divulge their dirty secrets either way.
UK people - thoughts?

I did, yes. It aired on TV over here.

It looks relatively well done from that brief viewing, I'm wondering if it can be found with subtitles floating around over here in the U.S.

I think you might have to go for the English dubbed version. It's a collaboration show from some European TV-stations. As such they also have actors from various countries, depending on the character they portrait. The thing is, almost all of them speak in their native tongue for filming (Maximilian & Co speak German and the French speak French, etc.). For some reason they like doing that sometimes with these collaboration projects. Because of that there are only dubbed versions I think. (Otherwise it would get a bit funny in conversions, when the people talking to one another don't speak the same language). Or you can find a German version with English subtitles ... You might be better off with that (I'm not impressed with films dubbed to English based on those I have seen/heard so far).
PS.: Don't expect that much combat or fighting like this though. The show focuses on Maximilian's early years and how he managed to become Emperor.
-
Fight scenes are NOT the primary interest. The overall story line would be what I am hoping is good.

Ooh, that sounds like an interesting series. I'll have to look for a subtitled version as well. Most English dubs are difficult to enjoy for me.
My wife and I watched Bly Manor. It was pretty good, though I didn't care for the change in pacing (for lack of other term - without giving away spoilers) of the last two episodes.
-
I've been mostly watching kids shows: Shaun the Sheep, Sarah and Duck, Sailor Moon, and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Shaun the Sheep: Great stuff! Its made by the same guys that made Wallace and Gromit. In fact, Shaun the Sheep is a spin off of the W&G movie "A Close Shave." The premise is simple. Shaun and the flock get into misadventures around the farm. An interesting thing to note is that there is no dialogue. Sheep goes, Baa, dog goes woof, chicken goes cluck. The humans are welsh, so they just speak in incoherent grunts and moans. Seasons 1-5 and the first movie is on Amazon Prime. Netflix has picked it up and released season 6 late last year along with a sequel movie "Farmageddon." Its great!
Sarah and Duck: Sarah and Duck is an enchanting show about a girl named Sarah and her pet Duck. Its hard to describe, but its just really chill and surprisingly quiet for a kid's show. Each episode is about 5-8 minutes long and it feels so much longer than that, and in a good way. We ended up buying the whole series on Amazon, but its free to watch in 20 minute to as long as an hour long compilations on youtube. Moon is by far the greatest character.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F87fpmUgPUA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F87fpmUgPUA)
Sailor Moon: I largely avoided this show as a teenager. My wife however loved it when she was younger and we started watching it with my daughters. Its surprisingly good. The best way I can describe it: Its like the original Power Rangers. In the original Power Rangers the episode formula is 1) Teenage slice of life, 2) interrupted by Evil person sending a monster to attack innocent people and the rangers fight them, 3) giant robot fights a giant monster. The Sailor Moon formula is 1) Teenage slice of life, 2) investigate why strange shit is happening, 3) Transform and fight monster. Each season appears to have an overarching story, and although monster of the week is prevalent, it is leading to something. Surprisingly compelling story and well developed characters that far surpasses anything I expected.
MLP:FiM: So I had no interest in this show...until Q from TNG shows up. Now when I say Q from TNG, I don't just mean the actor. It is Q from TNG in all but name and appearance. I put it on for my kids so I can do stuff around the house and pretty much ignored it. Until I heard John de Lancie's voice. I sat down and watch and was surprised that it was Q! Same sassy mannerisms, reality bending powrs at a snap of his fingers, being sly and an annoyance to the main cast that are just ready to be rid of him. Since then I started taking an interest in the show and its surprisingly well done. I can see why it has 9 seasons and a theatrical movie. The songs in the show are Broadway quality and a few are real ear worms.

Away from the kids stuff, I have been watching Fire Force on Hulu:
After seeing clips and art on imgur, I decided to try it out. The intro music is really nice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBqxVX_LXvk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBqxVX_LXvk)
Its a post apocalyptic world, and in Tokyo people have started to spontaneous combust. When doing so they become fire zombies called "infernals." The government created a response team to put down these demonic entities and investigate in what causes this phenomenon. They are called the Fire Force and are deployed like, and alongside, the fire department. The fire department puts out the fires after the Fire Force puts down the infernal. Some people have been born with pyrokenetic powers. Some of these people can manipulate existing fire and use them against the infernals, and some have developed X-men style abilities that are fire based. Most fire force companies consist of these individuals. There are also pyrokenetic terrorists and arsonists to contend with too.
The story follows Fire Force Company 8 as they put down infernals and try to figure out the cause of spontaneous combustion. The leader of company 8 doesn't have any powers and is just a normal human. Our protagonist is Shinra, who is a recruit. He can shoot fire out of his feet which he uses to launch himself like a rocket, do fire kicks, and break dance fighting. He also has a nervous tick, kind of like the Joker, in that when he's nervous, anxious, or scared, he can't help but smile. This gets him into trouble a lot. He has a tragic past and wants to investigate the fire that killed his family. There are many other crew mates on the team including another rookie that can make a plasma sword and thinks he's King Arthur, a pyrokenetic woman that was recruited from the military, a nun that reads the last rites for the infernals when they get put down, a no nonsense lieutenant that can manipulate guns, and the captain that has no powers which is uncommon in the Fire Force.
The first few episodes are great, with the second episode being a real gut puncher. The third episode is also great and deepens the mystery of the show. There is one glaring problem that shows up. A new character is introduced and the opening sequences indicates they will be joining the team. Maybe its just my problem and I just don't get it, but her character is just cringey. She dresses in a bikini under her fire suit and has this "clumsiness" where she'll trip and fall into a guy which results in him touching her boob or butt. She then berates them for sexual harassment. In her introduction scene I didn't even see her trip but in a blink of an eye, Shinra was just standing there awkwardly, and then his hand was under her bikini top and on her boob. He doesn't even know how it got there and he's not a lecherous character. She yells at him and "trips again" and now he has his hands on her butt. I just don't understand this type of character at all. It really breaks my immersion and is just awkward, and not in a funny way. Looking up the show, this is her entire character. She has the power to give herself fire cat powers, but other than that she's just there for fan service and to accidentally get groped.
Shitty side character aside, its really good. Real gut puncher moments and cool fight scenes with a couple of decent mysteries.
I need to catch up on Letterkenny. Season 9 is out but I think I am still on season 3.

We did this sort of the opposite way. My girls have loved MLP for years, and now we as a family are watching Star Trek the Next Generation. They think Q sounds just like Discord!

The Expanse season 5 has been good, though why Amazon has gone to this 3 and then weekly method for release is most frustrating.
-
I've been saving up the Expanse to binge it all at once over a day or two. I liked last year when they released all at once and could not figure out what the plan was behind this years schedule.
If your looking for nice relaxing shows, my mum and I have been watching both the Great British Sewing Bee and the Great Pottery Throwdown. Its mesmerizing watching people craft things (I'm also a big fan of Forged in Fire if you want to watch swordsmithing) and there's something very soothing about such a casual, good natured challenge show. I cant stand a lot of the modern cooking ones with people yelling at each other.

Started watching Mandalorian season 1 again with my wife. Hoping to get her up to speed so I can finally watch season 2. In the meantime, I'm enjoying S1 just as much the second time around!
-
Saw the PBS hour and a half long film called "Elizabeth is Missing". No, it is not about a Queen. Instead it is about an elderly woman played by played by Glenda Jackson who is losing her mind, and yet there is still enough left to seek the solution of a teenage disappearance that occurred when she was younger. Jackson does an amazing job of portraying a person with dementia during that time when they can still have moments of complete lucidity, and there dementia hasn't overcome them fully yet. It was an excellent story. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

My wife has been really into it. Its funny though, after a few episodes into season 2, when some information comes to light that I understood, she felt betrayed. "Why didn't you tell me about them? I feel like you're hiding stuff from me!" She was joking of course and just wanted me to dump some lore on her.
-
Thanks for all the tips, everyone!

Oh another show that I just remember that was really good is Ted Lasso. Ted is an American Football coach who helped a real shitty minor league team turn it around and win the league, and because of that he's hired to be the head coach for a top British Football team thats doing really poorly. If you caught the fact thats two different kinds of football, you might guess that its actually a secret conspiracy to tank the British Football team for reasons. Its actually a pretty heartwarming/uplifting comedy. Very similar to Schitts Creek if you know that, or possibly to Parks & Rec but not quite as zany.

That is Sly and Cobra I believe?
However fun fact - one of the jerk army bad guys from Rambo 2 was the sensei of Cobra Kai in the original Karate Kid movies.

The Musketeers on PBS. Missed episode 1 of season 1, and started with episode 2 this evening. Enjoyed! :::cheers:::
Apparently 1st season was in 2014, then 2nd in 2015, 3rd in 2016.
Anyone else ever see these?

-
Ha! Well the first show I watched only had Athos, Porto, Aramis, and D'Artagnan. Did see a 5th musketeer yet.
-
I have been watching the Expanse also, but must say that the first season was a bit like "hmm ok where is this going?" for me
Also watched the whole season of Star Trek: Picard in 2 days time.. that one really pulled me in to keep watching. I think that was the real first time I did binge watching

MLP FTW.
I even made a wargame using the MLP figures, you can read about it here:
https://www.thewargameswebsite.com/forums/topic/the-battle-for-sweet-apple-acres/
That is amazing!
-
"Miss Scarlet and the Duke" has now started on PBS here in the States. Definitely a Victorian era mystery show. Looks good so far!
-
And followed it up with the new version of "All Creatures Great and Small", season 1, Episode 2. :icon_cool:

-
So much to unpack here, from the rules to the terrain to the battle reports... well done!

Ha! Prancing unicorns teaching youngsters how to play war games, if the creators of the colored one horned horses only knew their impact on the world beyond such tv shows. And sci-fi daleks no less, too! :icon_eek: :icon_wink: :icon_lol: :eusa_clap:

Years ago there was a person who did an entire Bretonnia army out of MLP, as I recall.

Well they do play D&D in one episode so its not out of the realm of possibility.

The new Netflix She-Ra has them playing an RPG too.
:D
I think "the D&D" episode is a new trope that's pretty prevalent in shows now-a-days. Community, MLP, She-Ra, Gravity Falls, etc. Harmonquest is a show where they just play D&D live on stage and then animate over it. A new celebrity guest comes on every episode for a one off.
-
....pretty prevalent in shows now-a-days. Community...
Can we still call it now-a-days when that episode aired ten years ago?

They did a second one in season 5 which was 6 years ago, so up to you on where to draw the line I suppose. Granted in 2020 Netflix and Hulu removed the more famous one (from season 2) because of the use of "Blackface" which is weird considering the blackface in question is Ken Jeong cosplaying a Drow (dark elf). And Shirley addresses it in episode. YMMV. So there is recent controversy about the episode.
Adventure Time did a Magic the Gathering episode and its great, especially because Finn's opponent gets too competitive about the game and it becomes less fun for Finn. I think we as tabletop wargamers have probably experienced a similar opponent at one point in our lives.

Just binged the entire nine seasons of Letterkenny. Simple show but VERY funny. Figure it out . . .

Welcome back TexasYankee!
I need to pick that show back up. Last I remember I was on season 3 or 4. Good show, just lost track of it.

I'm a huge fan of Letterkenny, although I feel some of the later seasons are a bit weak. I don't blame them really. The seasons are weak because they're trying to experiment, mix it up and keep it fresh, and sometimes its just hard to stick the landing.
-
Welcome back TexasYankee!
Thank you, good sir!
Yeah, I picked up bits and pieces of it on Youtube, and then rejoiced when I found the series on Hulu.

Yay! Texas is back!
Watching Still Game 9 seasons. About 2 Scottish pensioners. I love it. Netflix

I watch it the 2nd time with the script turned on. When Isa talks, I barely understand anything. The humour is dry but very funny

My wife and I started watching The Good Place. I've seen gifs of it on imgur and decided to give it a try. It has an interesting premise. Eleanor (Kristen Bell) wakes up in a waiting room. She is greeted by a man named Michael (Ted Danson) Who then explains to her that she has died and she is now in the afterlife. He goes on to explain to her that there is a good place and a bad place. If you are an exceptionally good person, you go to the good place. Because she was a death-row lawyer and saved numerous innocent lives she gets to go to the good place. He shows her around and shows her to her new home which is tailored to her personality complete with clown paintings. In the afterlife you also get paired up with your soul mate. Chidi (William Jackson Harper), an ethics and philosophy professor from Senagal, shows up revealing that he is her soulmate. Michael also shows her a TV so she can relive her memories from her PoV when she was alive and showed his favorite of when she went to deliver toys to refugee children in the Ukraine. Michael then leaves to give Eleanor and Chidi a chance to get to know each other. Eleanor confides in Chidi that 1) she was never a lawyer, 2) hates clowns, 3) those memories are not her and 4) someone made a mistake and she isn't suppose to be in the good place.
Comedy ensues.
We're 3 episodes in and so far its great!
-
My last significant lady friend spoke highly of this show, although haven't gotten around to taking a view of it.
-
.
-
Then off to re-watch Sharpe and then start on Hammer Horror films!
I saw a wonderful video essay awhile ago that argued that the movie "Sleepy Hollow" is a love letter to Hammer Horror films and it made me enjoy it that much more.
-
Good Place got a lot of praise, I know folks who loved it. I enjoyed season 1 but by the time I finished didn't really feel like diving into the next season.
The Expanse meanwhile is the hit that just keeps on coming. I've been loving it, easily one of my favorite sci fis right now.
-
On PBS ...
"Africa with Ade Adepitan" ... Season 1, Episode 2 ... he's in east Africa, Kenya (with those protecting the elepants), Ethopia (a tour by an Olympic marathon gold medalist), Somalia ... this was at the back portion of this episode, very telling. His hotel was protected by barriers, he takes a tour to the war front with the military fighting the guerillas, goes to a basketball court (he is a parapalegic Olympic basketball player) and gets out of the car, takes off his protective vest, and plays with the Somalian ladies team, blurring out their faces to protect their identities. he also visits a hospital where there is a lady doctor their servicing female patients. Excellent.
This was a very good program, very, very good. :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
And ... Series 1, Episode 4 is next! Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbawe. :icon_biggrin:
-
The Expanse meanwhile is the hit that just keeps on coming. I've been loving it, easily one of my favorite sci fis right now.
Honestly we were trying to decide between The Expanse and The Good Place and settled on the Good Place because we needed a laugh.
-
A good choice. THere's not a lot of laughs in The Expanse. just generally detailed sci fi political intrigue.
-
My wife and I started watching The Good Place.
My wife and I smashed through the series the other year.
We loved it. Some really funny moments. The overall season arc / themes are great.
First season, especially the ending IMO is top notch.
When you get to a later season and hear how time works in the afterlife, you can never hear the name Jeremy again without wanting to add Bellamy. One of my favourite characters in later episodes / seasons, is Shawn. So dry but great.
Anyhoo, let me know how you track - we loved it.
-

It's Bearimy to be accurate, but your review is correct a very fine show that navigated its seasonal changes quite well to not run a single set up into the ground.
-
It is too. I knew there was an ‘i’ in there somehow.

My wife and I are watching Time Team on YouTube.

Picked up HBO Max for my yearly watching of Game of Thrones, at least the good seasons, and re-watched Beforeigners again. Allegory is a bit hit you over the head but I enjoy the idea of door to door Odin proselytizing.
Also odd when super Christian norseman is played by the same guy that played Young Ragnar in Last Kingdom or more oddly the guy who plays Arvid in Norsemen is that crazy religious guy.
-
Just started season 4 of Letterkenny. Shoresy is a new favorite. His burn game is awesome in season 3 and 4. He's played by the same actor as Wayne on the show so they never show Shoresy's face. Which makes for some clever set blocking (in a toilet stall, standing off camera, back to the camera, etc). Not sure I could get away with some of the stuff he says here, so here's a few "safe" ones to give you a picture.
Reilly I made an opsies, can you tell your mom to pick up Jonesys mom on the way over to my place? I double booked them by mistake you fuckin loser.
Your mom just liked my Instagram post from two years ago in Puerto Vallarta. Tell her I'll put my swimming trunks on for her anytime she likes.
You’re such a fucking loser I ran a charity 15k just to raise awareness
-
I freaking love Letterkenny and Shoresy has become a fan favorite of our movie night. Him and Coach, who slowly descends into just full out chaos.

My wife and I started watching Babylon 5. It was recently "remastered" on HBO max. I remember watching some of it 20 years ago (mostly the movie "In the Beginning") when it was syndicated on TNT and that I liked it. I have been warned that season 1 is a lot like season 1 of TNG where its really rough and episodes can be hit or miss, but that it picks up in season 2 and onward. So far we're about 5 episodes in and there were maybe 2 episodes that didn't jive well with us, but the rest have been great. Londo and G'Kar centric episodes especially! We just finished episode 5 "The Parliament of Dreams" and it had us laughing and really engaged. Also, the two new Narn characters in the episode just seemed so familiar to us. When we checked IMDB we discovered that they were in episodes of TNG, DS9, and Voyager and that's where we knew them from (even under all that make up). The male Narn especially since he has that (in)famous scene from DS9 where he played a Romulan that tells Sisko the data he gave him was a fake (https://youtu.be/H6yQOs93Cgg). Its been a fun "who is that" situation when watching because we come across a few one off characters where we just know we've seen them before. Like the mortician from NCIS playing a shifty archeologist or Alotta Fagina from Austin Powers playing a Centari girl that has a tragic story wrapped up with Londo.
The actors playing Londo and G'Kar are amazing. TNG characters seem stiff and monotone compared to them. Especially Londo. He is so animated and will throw and smash stuff or jump on a table and crawl over to someone. G'Kar did probably the best spit take in television when his new diplomatic aid caught him at a strip club. Its just hard to describe! It feels lively. The actor that plays Garibaldi is also refreshing as he seems to be comfortable in his own skin where as all the other human characters seem too stiff and are finding their stride. So far, its fun.

-
Nah, that's you and your wife in costume. :icon_wink:
-
I was always a big fan of Babylon 5. They did some really interesting diplomatic stuff and really showed how multiple factions can really be shades of grey.
-
We're into season 3 now and my stars its so fucking good! And extremely relevant! You really feel for the characters, especially G'Kar. Although hes an enjoyable character, especially when teamed up with Londo, but we didn't have much sympathy for him until near the end of Season 2, and especially going forward. Poor dude. There is a bit of 90s sci-fi schlock here and there but every episode feels like it helps develop the characters, the universe, or furthers 1 2 or even all 3 of the main plots that unfolds over the course of the show. Even one off characters become relevant long after their episode. The continuity is near perfect as I can tell. I was really caught off guard when two of the female characters hooked up. I mean it wasn't really out of left field it had been slowly (like extremely slowly) building up, but I was not expecting a mid 90s sci-fi show to go that route. I read that the creator wanted to do more before their relationship\story hit their climax but the network batted it down several times. It is a shame that because one of the actresses wanted to leave the show, they speed up their budding relationship to the max in one episode and didn't give the relationship any time to grow. It would have made the personality wipe more impactful if it had time.
Just a great show so far and amazing that no one really talks about it. At times it feels like Game of Thrones, nearly 20 years before it was put to television. It was also refreshing to see Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa playing a role that wasn't the villain. Even if it was a one off. Such an underrated gem of the 90s so far!

Free to air TV is abysmal in my region. The 'best' shows at the moment are 20 year old episodes of Becker and 25 year old episodes of Sabrina.
-
Currently watching Godless on Netflix while painting. Western, well done, same feeling as Deadwood had. Violent, but not guns blazing 24/7. Recommend it.
-
We watched Cursed on Netflix.
If you are a Wood Elf enthusiast, cool to see some fey represented in modern media.
And obviously, if you are a Bretonnian enthusiast, its a different take on Arthurian legend.
-
I remember when a regional network really pushed hard to market Babylon 5 when it was new [i think the same network was running Gladiators and the abysmal Robocop TV series too] but it struggled to find an audience.
-
Alright. I signed up for a 7 day free trial for Paramount Plus and I watched Lower Decks.
I fucking loved it! I honestly do not know what the show has been shit on by so many youtube trekkies. I am pretty sure its hated for one of 3 reasons.
Either 1) They took one look and immediately hated it and never watched it. 2) They decided they hated it and then watched it to "hate watch" it to point out how not star trek it is. or 3) They just don't like the main character Mariner. I mean yeah its one thing not to like it or care for it, its another thing to just unload hate onto it.
Honestly the ship is great, the main character ensigns are complex and fun, and the bridge crew are great too, in their own way.
The Ship is the Cerritos, a Californian-class utility ship. They specialize in follow up missions usually after a flagship has already established first contact, discovered something that need to be researched, or solve a problem. They are the tow trucks, second contact, taxi, and problem solvers of the Federation. They are not the Enterprise or other ship that is suppose to go out into space and make first contact, or get entangled with external politics. They're the grunts of Starfleet. Lower Decks is essentially a workplace comedy set in Star Trek and a love letter to the show. Every "Easter egg" feels like less of a nostalgia trip and more like continuity, trying to tie all the Trek shows together and make the universe feel lived in and familiar. The 4 main characters are Mariner the rogue with a heart of gold, Boimler the by the book ensign that wants to be a captain someday, Tendi a bright eyed and optimistic graduate from the Academy, and Rutherford an engineer that loves anything techie. They all have flaws that make them relatable and complex. For a light hearted comedy that takes place in the Trek universe, I grew to really care about these guys and just had fun.
The first couple of episodes are a little rough but it really picks up and ends strong.

^I now avoid Youtube like the plague. 40% of it is people shouting abuse at twitter feeds they disagree with and another 40% is people 'reacting' to video games. Sadly; this is now what the youngins think is entertainment.
-
Even most of the young uns these days dont like youtube. They've all moved to Twitch. My little cousins who all use to watch Lets Plays religiously never stop talking about how badly the quality of youtube has dropped, which is ironic to hear considering how long I've been grumbling about it.
-
So, Lower Decks. I only watched the first Episode, and didn’t immediately like it. I don’t like the two main characters. They are just too over the top for my tastes. I much preferred Final Space - however I still haven’t watched season 2.
-
The first couple of episodes are the weakest IMHO but it picks up and really ends strong. The characters are a bit more complex than the first episode really lets on. The last 3 episodes are by far my favorite.
-
Oh I imagine there is complexity there. They have set it up to have more nuance. I just can’t stand their personalities so really don’t want to watch any more. Which is a shame, because my wife and I just just finished Picard and really enjoyed it.
-
I picked up the new [I think its new] Spartacus TV series. Its so over the top its funny. The fight scenes are so cartoonishly gory and over the top. Its like something out of Mortal kombat.
The shows clearly been made to appeal to the 300 crowd

It's not new, but everything else you said is 100% accurate. The only thing you got 'wrong' was the thing you admitted you could be wrong about. I like the clarity and truth of your statement.

I watched the Star Trek episode "Arena" with my girls the other day. My oldest was excited/scared watching the Gorn chase Kirk around. It was a delight.
It's criminal that there isn't more Gorn episodes throughout Trek.
The Gorn show up barley a handful of times but is one of the iconic aliens of the TOS series. I think in total there are 4 episodes throughout Star Trek that have them show up.
TOS: Arena
TAS: The Time Trap
ENT: In A Mirror Darkly
LDS: Veritas
(I'm not including the skeleton in DIS, that would be like saying that the Alien was in Predator 2 because you see a skull)
I know one of the arguments have been the CGI or costuming was too goofy, but after rewatching "Arena" I thought it looked great. Sure they remastered it and had CGI blinking, but honestly it looks just as good as some of the TNG aliens we meet. Mick Fleetwood's fish alien from TNG looks worse than the Gorn from Arena.
I guess it feels like a missed opportunity that TNG and DS9 could have had some Gorn show up, either centered on in an episode or roaming the promenade. Maybe Worf and Riker/Sisko have to mediate between the Gorn and Klingons or something. It would have been nice to have some more of the Gorn show up. Especially some Gorn ships! Could you imagine if they joined the alliance against the Dominion as a counter to the Breen?
I know there's some books/comics/games out there where they show up (I remember them being playable in Starfleet Command which took place in the Kirk movie eras, and are conquered by the Klingons in Star Trek Online), but it just feels like a missed opportunity that they haven't shown up in the shows or movies.
Apparently a Gorn was suppose to be in Nemesis as Worf's +1 at Riker's wedding but it was cut. Ugh, I want that! I want that story about Worf's Gorn friend!

Caught the first episode of the new "The Wonder Years".
It's based on the same format as the one I watched during some of my younger years. And it starts in 1968, as did the original. This time it is about a southern black family, instead of a western white family, although the story is still told from the voice of an older person looking back on his youth in the late 60's and into the early 70's.
I liked it. :icon_cool: :::cheers:::

I've been watching ONey Plays on youtube and one of the regular guests is Zach Handel (AKA PsychicPebbles). He is incredibly funny and does amazing voice work and impressions on the show. I found out yesterday that Adult Swim gave him a show called "Smiling Friends" and they aired the pilot for it back on April Fools Day and he is suppose to get a full season by the end of 2021. It looks like his personal art style too so I am wondering if he animated it. I watched the pilot and if you are familiar with his humor, it really does seem like something he wrote on the fly. The show is about two guys that work for a company that goes to sad people with the goal of making them smile. In the episode they are sent by their creepy boss to help a guy that is depressed. Their client is at the end of his rope (he literally has a gun to his own head the entire episode) when the duo show up and I was delighted that the person they were helping was voiced by Mike Stoklasa (of RedLetterMedia) whose voice perfectly matched the character. There is also a B plot where a friend of theirs has noticed someone is stealing his cheese and tracks down a bunch of weird pests which ends up being the resolution to the A plot. It is beyond weird, it is morbid, and I found it funny. If your a familiar with or a fan of Zach's humor then I think you may find it enjoyable, but otherwise it may not be your cup of tea.

So watched the second season of the Witcher and I don't know just didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Changes in the first season I tended to understand a bit more what they were trying to do but season 2 just made some confusing narrative choices. a
Adding bits which I didn't really understand the purpose of and cutting things from the books I really enjoyed gave me too many later seasons GoT vibes.
-
PBS in the States has been running Wallander again. I had only seen season 3, and it is running again now, but was really enjoying the back end of season 2 as well. Bummed that I haven't seen season 1, nor the front half of season 2, but will hopefully get to them some day.
Branagh is wonderful in these, a very good actor, able to transform himself into different characters along his career.
-
I just finished watching Ozarks season 4 part 1.
I hate to sound like a sociopath but I like watching morons get their comeuppance.
-
They're finally showing Shoresy's face on Letterkenny! It was always a joke that it was the same actor that plays Wayne (for like 8 seasons), and so you only see his back, or they hide his face. Well they're not hiding it anymore! They released a teaser the other day.

I nearly lost my lunch when Seaquest came on during the midday slot.
WHEN THE HELL was the last time that show was on the air?

Oh god, I remember watching that show when I was a kid. They could talk to dolphins if I remember correctly and it was pretty much under water Star Trek and the captain of the ship was the protagonist from Jaws.

For what its worth, the talking Dolphin is voiced by Frank Welker.
I also had to watch Police Academy 2 the other day as it was a choice between that, Rambo 4 or Carry on Cleopatra

About a month away until Star Trek: Strange New Worlds starts! Trailer dropped yesterday.
https://youtu.be/eeBnz03ZM9o (https://youtu.be/eeBnz03ZM9o)
Its the time on the 1701 USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike's command. Many TOS characters are present including Cadet Uhura, Nurse Chapel, Doctor M'Benga, and Spock. There's also some characters from "The Cage" including both Christopher Pike and Una (Number One). There is also an interesting new character, La'an Noonien-Singh!

When i was three years old, my mum and sainted Grandmother took me to the local toy store and i spotted something. A diecast metal police car toy. I screamed and screamed because i wanted it so badly. My mother said we couldn't afford it.
The following day my grandmother turned up with that police car toy in its red and black box. I soon discovered it was a robot in disguise.
Always telling this story makes me sad. March on grandma :icon_cry:

I watched the premier for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. I loved it! Feels like TOS in a lot of ways while also being its own thing.

Brand New Cherry Flavor was a terrific show. Crazy and unique.
Outer Range on Amazon is pretty good as well. I recommend both!

Enjoying AP Bio at the moment.

I picked up CSI season 3 for $2.00. Its aged quite poorly.

I just started watching Spy x Family on Crunchyroll. I really like the premise and its been really good. I even got my wife to watch the first few episodes and she's hooked!
2 rival neighboring nations (Westalis and Ostania) are involved in a cold war. One of the members of the nationalistic party in Ostania is trying to make the cold war a hot one. In response Westalis sends in their best spy, Agent Twilight. He assumes the name Loid Forger and finds out the only way to get close to the target is by meeting them at social gatherings at an affluent and very private school. So Loid will have to create a fake family to fit in and get a child into the school. Loid visits a sketchy orphanage (no papertrail) and selects the smartest kid there, a 6 year old little girl named Anya. Anya however has her own secret, she escaped from a government experiment and is secretly a telepath. After getting her to pass the entrance exam, they will have to do a family interview and will need someone to fill the role of the mother. They bump into a pretty lady named Yor. She's in her late 20s and is single which makes her suspicious to the authorities. She doesn't want to raise suspicion because she is secretly an assassin for a private organization. They strike up a deal, they will pretend to be married so that she can appear to be normal and he can get Anya into the private school to get closer to his target. No one in this pretend family knows anyone else's secret, except Anya because she can read minds.
We're 4 episodes in so far and it is very funny and entertaining. We're watching the English dub on Crunchyroll but the original Japanese with English subtitles is on Hulu. My kids like Anya but they had to skip the second episode because it was too violent.
TL;DR: Mr and Mrs Smith if they adopted 11 from Stranger Things.

In regards to what i said about 'classic' CSI
1: Jorja Fox talks quite quickly with her mouth partly closed which makes it hard to understand her
2: Most of the lab room dialogue is exposition on how the various gizmo's work [its almost redundant the way these 'doctors' shout instructions on how their gear works]
3: A multiple homicide can be solved in forty minutes with time for commercials

I think this would be cool.

Lower Decks season 3 release announcement poster! Considering how Rutherford's scenes went down in S2 E10, this is BIG! Also a great Homage to the Search for Spock poster too.

I laugh at the poor editing on home reno shows.

His driver ... "What's does that even mean?"
Stallone's character ... "My point exactly."

I've been watching "Bastard!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy" on Netflix. Its based on comic books from the 80s and it shows (think of those "Heavy Metal" movies and magazines). Apparently it had its own animation adaptation back in the 90s and Netflix decided to give it the remake treatment in 2022.
The premise:
Hundreds of years after an apocalyptic event created by an entity known as Anthrasax (named after the heavy metal band Anthrax) that rocked the earth has kicked humanity back to the medieval era, but now with magic, monsters, etc. An evil wizard named Dark Schneider (named after German heavy metal vocalist Udo Dirkschneider) and his forces tried to take over the world, but he was defeated by Prince Lars Ul Metallicana whom sacrificed himself to seal Dark Schneider into the body of a baby boy named Lucien. Fast forward 15 years and the Kingdom of Metallicana is under attack by new dark forces. It's up to the naive young boy's caretaker Tia Yoko to unseal the dark lord to save the kingdom. She does as evil wizard Osbourne (named after Ozzy Osbourne) invades the castle. So Dark Schneider appears and is a total asshole. He defeats Ozzy who was working for the new dark lord. Now the new Dark Lord, an old friend of Dark Schneider's as are many of his generals, tries to find out if he will stop their plans of restarting that same apocalyptic event that destroyed the world before.
TL;DR: In a world of sword and sorcery the kingdom named after Metallica summons Sauron to fight a bunch of other dark lords and everyone/thing is named after 80s metal bands and band members. Its cheesy as hell and it knows it. Fair warning as I didn't know this going in but there is a lot of T&A, both male and female, as well as gore. Considering the source material is 80s sword and sorcery, it makes sense.
Also the music is awesome!

Ha! I'm imagining some, if not many, folks watching that show may not have a clue has to the history behind it.
-
Reminds me of the big band gags in Soul Music
Led balloon, Sex crossbows, Defiantly the dwarves
-
Jojo's Bizarre Adventures is also like that. Characters are all named after 80s music artists and songs. Dio, Vanilla Ice, Oingo, Boingo, Zeppeli (Led Zeppelin), Robert E. O. Speedwagon (REO Speedwagon), Lisa Lisa, Suzi Q, etc.

Boobwank Empire. I mean, Boardwalk Empire.
I picked up some old 1:24th scale 20's-30's model cars and decided to watch it while building them.
The sex scenes are a little over the top and numerous.
-
Have recently watch all of 1883. Very good.
Now watching Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in 1923. Excellent.
-
The Last of Us has been pretty damn good so far
-
So much crap on the free to air channels. Streaming services aint much better
-
Started watching "Picard" ... while I wait for the enxt episdoe of "1923".
-
Ha ... in one episode, Picard says, "I never cared for science fiction. I just didn't get it." :icon_lol:

Spartacus season 3

By the way, the first 5 episodes are up, 6th episode posts tomorrow. It's darn good!

The Bad Batch
Yawn. A show about 'A-team' and or 'Rambo' clone troops is sabotaged by an annoying and needless child sidekick, Omega who breaks the show by being so annoying and useless. She causes the clones more trouble than Palpatine. They have to stop whatever they're doing to save her.
P.S I knew she'd be force sensitive. Ten bucks says the all-powerful Ashoka appears to take her as an apprentice.
-
Ha! I didn't realize that was a show. Had heard something about it and thought it was a one off movie.
-
Ghosts, especially the UK version, is solid good fun. Just finished its final season to, and in the classic British fashion only 6 episodes per season plus some specials. So easy to binge the whole thing!

King of the Hill on Disney+
I never saw it when it was on in prime time during its initial run in my area as it was on a network i couldn't pick up.
NOW i understand all the memes
