Title: Battle Reports
Post by: Michael W on June 27, 2007, 09:17:17 AM
To the Men of the Empire

The campaign is, at last, launched.  Battles are being fought, victories cheered, defeats overcome.  The Warhammer-Empire community is THE front-running voice of the Empire.  We have a few alliances, numerous enemies, and dark and insidious plots are afoot (cheers to the rats).  The time has come to prove our resolve and show our steel in combat and blood.

Please, continue with story-style army introductions and battle reports in the "Nemesis Crown Fluff" thread.

On this thread, please post SHORT battle reports, in the following format:

Region:
Armies:
Army Name:
General:
Battle Size:
Objective:
Fluff Objective:

Cool Moment:

The following is a "filled-out" example of what this should look like:

Region:  Northern Europe
Armies:  Empire vs. Ogres
Army Name:  The Finkelstein Legion
General:  Graf Todenhort von Finkelstein
Battle Size:  2,150 pts.
Objective:  Standard Kill-em-all

Outcome:  Minor Empire Victory
Cool Moment:  The WP's unit of Swordsmen chopped through the Ironguts in the first round of combat!

Hi all, heres a 2K report against O&G. My opponent was a very experienced O&G player, it was a great game.

My list A/L on WA with Mace of Helstrom
W/P with VHS
W/P with Doomfire ring
Lvl 2 Heavens with 2 scrolls

23 Sword FC with 9 Sword Detachment
25 Sword FC with 9 sword detachment
7 Outriders Musician and Champ
10 Handgunners
5 Nilla Knights
5 IC Knights
2 Cannons
1 HRB

He had

20 Black Orcs full command - Banner of Butchery
30 Orcs Full command
20 Big uns - Full Command
10 Boar Riders
10 Wolf Riders
Giant
10 Squig Hoppers

I deployed

BOAR RIDERS    ORCS    BIG UNS    BLACK ORCS          SQUIGS  GIANT

                   WOLF RIDERS

HILL
HILL

                                                                   FORREST
           RUIN on 2 Levels

OUTRIDERS  HAND GUNNERS                                            IC KNIGHTS
 NILLA's
                                   SWORD = D    A/L   SWORD + D

HILL / HRB                                                   HILL 2 CANNONS

I got first turn.

I moved my Handgunners to the Ruins so they could fire in 2 ranks.
Outriders moved forward to just out of charge range oh Wolves and Boars with IC knights about 5 inches Further back ready to flank charge any unit that charged the Outriders.
The Knights moved Forward as much as possable just out of charge range of Giant and Squigs.

Magic killed 2 Orcs with Orions Thunder.
Cannons and HRB killed a total of 6 Orcs, and took 2 wounds off the giant.

His Turn 1

He moved his Boar Riders up to charge my Knights or Outriders next turn. His army all moved forward. Magic he did nothing, and he had no shooting.

My Turn 2

My Knights charged the Squigs, and ignored the giant, leaving the cannon to kill him.
No other movement.

Magic, made IC knights and Swords unbreakable.

Shooting, Outriders with 23 shots at short range killed 9 Boar riders. The Handgunners wiped out the character - a Black orc.

Cannon took 2 wounds off giant. HRB missed.

Combat. I killed all the squigs thanks to hatred from W/P and overran to just behind the Black Orcs.

O&G Turn 2

He continued advancing his army, except the Black Orcs that turned around to face my IC Knights.

His wolf riders were no in charge range of my A/L.
Magic did nothing.

My Turn 3. I had a problem, I couldn't see the Black Orcs to charge them, and as I was march blocked I couldn't get away. So I decided that I could probably take the Big uns and Orcs easies if the Black orcs were caught up with unbreakable IC Knights at the other end of the table, so I turned the knights round to face the Black orcs.

The A/L charged the Wolf Riders, I wanted to get his Big uns into combat as quickly as possable. I knew his wolves would flee and he would charge me with his unit of big uns, I was unbreakable, could issue a challenge and the flank charge him with 1 battalion of swords in my next turn with the other battalion moving up to charge any unit who threatend to flank my 1 swords battalion.

So as predicted Wolves flee, A/L left all exposed (wohahahaha). Knights turn around, Nilla and Outriders move into position to flank the Orcs and Hand gunners turn to face the orcs.

Magic I kill 2 with Burning gaze from W/A and I fired from the doomfire ring at the black orcs, (which was a mistake!) The Doomfire ring kills 2 Black Orcs who fail there leadership test and flee 12" and puts them smack bang next to the Big -uns, stairing at my A/L.

Shooting, I kill 5 Big uns with the HRB.

O&G turn 3.

He is now in a very good position especially as he rallies his Black Orcs. He charges the W/A with his Big uns, but the Orcs squabble. The Wolves dont rally and the Giant moves up to be in charge range of my cannons.

No magic

Combat. I challenge he accepts with his General who steals my ward save. I hit with Mace he saves with ward save, he hits me and does 1 wound. I Hold.

My Turn 4

I charge the flank of the big uns with my Swords battalion with W/P. My IC Knights march to threaten the flank of the Black Orcs. My Nilla Knights move to the flank of the Orcs.

My magic does nothing.

Shooting I kill 7 Orcs with Outriders and Hand gunners. HRB hits the Black Orcs and kills 4.

Combat, General and A/L inflict a wound each. The Swords kill 0 Begins who kill 1 back, Orcs hold on a 4, with BSB.

O&G Turn 4

He charges the flank of my swords who are in combat with the Big uns. His wolves rally. Giant charges cannon crew who flee. His Orcs move forward to be in charge range of my 2 sword battalion.

No magic

Combat. His Black Orcs kill 7 of my swords on the charge. I kill 2 Big - uns. My A/L finally gets a wound past his ward save. My swords are unbreakable thanks to the W/P and we all hold.

My Turn 5

I charge the 2 Swords into the flank of the Black Orcs. . My Ic Knights are out of charge range of the Black Orcs and March blocked by the wolves, so they move forward to be in charge range next time. The Outriders move to the rear of the big-uns to cut them down when they flee.

Magic / A/L casts Soul fire and Burning Cleansing Fire, killing 5 Big - uns, 3 Black Orcs.

Shooting, last cannon kills the giant. The HRB lands on target and kills 9 Orcs who flee into the nilla and are wiped out.

Combat. The 2nd Swords kill 1 Black Orc, and lose 1 in return. The Black Orcs kill 2 Swods from the 1st Battalion, and lose 2 in return. The 1st Swords kill 3 Big uns who kill 1 back. In the Challenge I finally get the mace to inflict a wound on the O&G General who fluffs my Ward Save and I inflict 5 wounds. One Dead O&G Black Orc General.

He fails his leadership tests and flees with both units into the waiting IC knights and Outriders.

He concedes.

Great game, sorry about the lack of picks.

W/P making units unbreakable is so good, he just couldn't break them, every time he wanted to dispel it he couldn't as I was casting Cleansing Fire, Soul Fire etc.

Excellent job so far, gentlemen.  Keep up the posts.
I'll be using this forum to get an idea of how the W-E community is handling the war, and the battles posted here will be the basis for weekly updates (on Saturdays).
One thing:  I've seen no defeats posted so far.  I know we're all good, but we're not THAT good.  Post defeats, too.  We need setbacks as much as victories for a good story.  We aren't gonna win 'em all.

Continue the fight, gentlemen.  Let them taste Imperial steel!

General:  Baron Reinhardt Von Schadelandoese.
Battle Size: 1500pts.
Objective: Pitched Battle.
Fluff Objective: Traverse the Treacherous Forest Roads South out of the Ostermark en route to the muster for the campaign.

Quote
Commander Helstrom,
After our less than impressive encounter with the beasts of the forest we were forced off the road and lost in the darkness of the woodlands, hounded at all hours by the dark denizens of this fell land. I was prepared to lose all hope of reaching our destination, until we were delivered by a chance encounter.

A knightly order by the name of the Hunters of Sigmar found us wandering lost and aided us in our travels. They led us to the beasts camp deep in the forest and we caught them unawares! Cold steel and black powder won the day as the foes piecemeal attacks were cut to shreds. Foul giant slugs and rotting minotaurs were just many of the mutant creatures that were put to the sword.

We burnt the whole area to the ground and with our new found guides we march with all due haste to Egondorf. I hear the Orcs are massing to lay seige. I hope we reach the town before it is cut off.

Region: UK - Barren Hills.
Armies: Empire vs Nurgle Beasts of Chaos.
Army Name: Helstrom's 4th - Ostermark IX Korps
General: Baron Reinhardt Von Schadelandoese.
Battle Size: 1500pts
Objective: Pitched Battle.
Fluff Objective: Recovering from the stern resistance shown by the Beasts, the men of the Ostermark continue their dangerous journey through the forests.
Outcome: Major Empire Victory.
Cool Moment: First turn a cannon ball kills a minotaur stone dead, and the brand new unit flees off the board. Pestigor die to a helblaster in a last samurai style of chugging machinegun death. The lesser beasts get routed by the disciplined imperial troops.

Quote
Our Hunters of Sigmar guides have led us successfully to Egonsdof!

The town and its high walls lay in sight across the newly cleared lands around it, the smell of charred woodland was thick in the air. Unfortunately the Orcs had beaten us to it, the greenskins were massing around the forests edge surrounding the town, preparing to lay siege.

I immediately took the initiative and struck out against a warband of Orcs that had laid their camp just on the edge of the clearing. Sigmar protects we caught them completely unawares and a bloody slaughter ensued. We massacred the greenskins to the cheers of the townspeople, who by now had climbed to their rooftops to watch the battle. We suffered barely any casualties, the majority of the losses coming from a band of Morr worshiping repentants who were following Reverend Stilgarr, a High Priest of Morr whose battle shrine ministers to my men. They died to a man delaying some 60 Orcs long enough for my men to flank them.

Soon not a single Orc remained on the field, those who had not been put to death had scattered to the forest. We shall be in Egonsdorf by nightfall.

Region:  UK - Barren Hills
Armies:  Empire VS Orcs.
Army Name: Helstrom's 4th - Ostermark IX Korps
General: Baron Reinhardt Von Schadelandoese.
Battle Size: 2000pts.
Objective: Pitched Battle.
Fluff Objective: For the troops of the Ostermark to break through the massing Orcs to reach Egondorf.
Outcome: Massacre to the Empire!
Cool Moment: Rocket Battery Annihilates a whole regiment of Orcs, 14 Flagellents hold up two units of 30 Orcs for two turns! Suffered barely any casualties.

General:  Carl Von Clausewitz

Cool Moment:  First turn knockouts of enemy artillery by both great cannons.

Quote
Journal of Carl Von Clausewitz, Military Advisor to the Talabheim Irregulars.

27h June

It was a long and tiresome march from Talabheim to the Great Forest.  The troops, though, endured the hardships of the march without serious complaint.  Morale has remained good, with the men keen to make their mark on the coming struggles.

Our orders from General Helstrom directed us to Egonsdorf to aid in the defence and fortification of this, somewhat isolated, town; under the command of Lord Veldemere.  We made our billet just outside the town, near the forest to the east, and prepared for further orders.  The troops were much reassured when we were joined by a contingent of the Hunters of Sigmar, I fear we shall need men with such expertise in the coming battles.

28th June

Our first action of the campaign.  Near dawn our scouts reported a large band of greenskins massing near our deployment area.  The alarm raised; the Irregulars prepared our battle line and awaited the inevitable attack.

The enemy seemed well prepared, with several crude artillery pieces being moved up behind a mass of green bodies.

Battle began with the artillery of both sides exchanging fire.  Though some casualties were suffered our own cannon proved superior, knocking out the enemy artillery in short order.  Meanwhile our scouts and cavalry dueled with swift moving goblin cavalry.

The green tide then surged forward en mass crashing into our line.  I am proud to say that despite many casualties our line held and our disciple and training paid off.  One by one the enemy units were routed and sent running.  Our cavalry were able to run down a good number of the enemy, but some were able to melt into the forest into which we dared not risk further pursuit.

Region: Talabec Borders
Armies: Empire vs Orcs and Goblins
Army Name: Wissenland Expeditionary Force - Helstrom's 4th
General: Ortolf von Brennenburg (although a flamboyant Gilderoy Lockhart lead the patrol, will explain shortly)
Battle Size: 375
Objective: Standard
Fluff Objective: Taking Waldberg
Outcome: Marginal Defeat
Cool Moment:  My spear regiment with halberdier detachment flead after being attacked by her entire patrol force.  Mr. 'Gilderoy Lockhart' (just a nickname) swung wildly like a sissy and ran for his life.  The crossbows held off the entire force by itself for three turns until the battle ended.

Herr Helstrom,
I just recieved word from my scouting party that they encountered a small band of goblins. My men were sent to investigate claims of a group of 'evil dwarfs' reported by local villagers when they stumbled upon this bunch gibbering, 'cruzade.'

The goblins struck with such ferocity upon our spear regiment, they fled without a fight, the captain followed closely. If not for the valiant stand of the crossbows, the day would have been lost. The crossbowmen withdrew in a gallant rear guard action, leaving the greenskins to produce more foul effigies; the likes of which have been reported throughout the region. The captain is being held on several accounts of cowardice.

Outcome: Massacre for me!

Cool Moment: Not really a cool moment, but a cool last-half-of-the-game, where my humble unit of ten halberdiers stood their ground against a fully kitted out, 25 rat strong unit of clanrats PLUS chieftain. For THREE rounds. And in the final turn, helped by a failed panic check from the flank charge by the outriders, the halberdiers pursued and overran the clanrats! So that's a 50 point unit holding, breaking and destroying a unit of over 300 points.
But fair is fair, there was a most painful moment as well, when a ratling gun took out half of my swordsmen unit and it fled, taking my captain along with them.

General Helstrom,

It is with deepest regret and embarrassment that I write this letter to you. Our Bogenhafen Irregulars were dispatched to patrol the road between the Waldberg fort and the Tower of Moonrise. In the course of our duty we came across an army of undead from the far south. What they were doing here I do not guess, but we commenced in laying down a barrage that decimated a large part of their force. With most of their mounted forces gone we began our advance slowly to get in position to make a counter offensive when one of our units overzealous with our previous success moved to a more exposed position. Things quickly went from bad to worse as the cannon exploded and our men began to panic in fear from a charge of the undead armies chariots. When all was said and done, only our Talabec archermen guides remained on the field of battle and had to secret themselves to escape notice. I apologize for this failure to hold our objective and ask for a chance for my men to regain their confidence on the field of battle.

Your Humble Servant,

General Helstrom,

Thank you General for giving my Bogenhafen Irregulars the opportunity to Escort our esteemed allies the Brettonians to the Headless Badger Inn. Upon arriving there we found the place under siege by various armies including the Rat-Men, Dark Elves, and the Undead Army from the South we met the previous day. Our valiant men cleared away the right flank from the building where a band of Dwarfs were beginning to flee from a melee on the other side of the building. We began to pound away with our missile troops and shot down a troop of Dark Elf Cavalry that was in the process of flanking our Brettonian allies. I am pleased to report that casualties were light and our cannon was true, wiping out several of the undead's chariots and a few of the lizard mounts the Dark Elves ride. We were able to repulse the invaders with impunity. I put myself at your service and await your further command.

Sincerely,

Oh Woe Upon Me!

Gentleman,
It is with deepest regret that I have to report my loss at the Headless Badger Inn (GW event) however it was a victory for the forces of light.  Allow me to explain briefly: The fogs of war were against the detachment I had sent to reinforce the Headless Badger Inn.  The flagellants and knights could not make out who our opponents were and they ended up fighting against high elves and fellow sons of the Empire! (To make sides even, I had to join the forces of chaos due to the order side having to many players, all of which were friends or game club membrs).  It is fortunate that they caused only a few casualties before realizing their mistake.  However this will go as a loss for my forces.  I will try to redeem myself tommorow at my clubs battle for the Headless Badger.

Commander Helstrom,
Having safely arrived at Egonsdorf I collected my orders and went about completing them. My objective was to sally from the town and slash and burn the forest from the east side of the town in preparation for impending siege and to facilitate future recivilisation of the area. My men left the town in high spirits after our well recieved victory in sight of the town last night. My men were given garlands and cheered out of the town this morning after their performance.

That battle must have left an equally large impression upon the greenskins as soon after we began our task of logging and setting fires the very same tribe of Orcs approached us prepared for battle. Led by a large imposing Orc it was clear that he wanted revenge and had come especially for us.

My army formed up and this time the battle was harder fought. The greenskins were determined to keep order amongst their ranks as their leaders were killing more of their men than my troops missile fire as the two lines maneuvered towards each other. Finally the lines crashed together and the meatgrinder of the shieldwall began. Reverend Stilgarr on his battleshrine made the first breakthrough by charging down a unit of trolls that were being egged on by a shaman. He then wheeled aorund to flank the greenskin line. The Orcs were much more reluctant to flee this time around and a lengthy fight ground on as neither army  would give ground.

On the other flank the Hunters of Sigmar tustled with a unit of boarboyz and were defeated, however they had managed to protect my artillery as the boarboyz charged off the field after the knights, only to return and join the large fight in the center.

The battle was brought to a close as finally the Orcs, seeing their numbers dwindling, fought their way back into the forest rather than routing. My men were too exhausted to pursue and regardless, we had our fires to set and further forest to cut down. We held the field to complete our objectives.

Cool Moment: A huge multiple combat in the middle of the board that lasted for 3 turns until the end of the game, where no side would break and casualties were piled high. The battle shrine of Morr (WA) acquits itself magnificently, scrunching a unit of trolls led by a shaman then turning back to flank the greenskin line. Despite the final scrum being undecided, there were a lot fewer greenskins hanging on than there were humans. One black Orc manages to kill 5 of his unit thanks to a failed animosity check.

2nd July

The Greenskins have not troubled the Irregulars section of the Egonsdorf defences for several days.  With our forces better dug-in now our patrols were extended to further into the accursed forest.

Thus one of our patrols ran into a force at first believed to be Asur.  However, the appearance of reptilian creatures being used as cavalry mounts alerted the patrol leader that this was a Druchi raiding party.

The patrol immediately attacked.  And although the Druchi cavalry, and especially their leader, killed many troopers the evil raiders were driven off completely.  Further patrols sought to seek out the main force of the Druchi but no sign was found.

Some huntsmen later reported that the Druchi seemed to be heading south east, in the approximate direction of Tor Thana.

Commander Helstrom,

Again today I march forth from the town gates to cull both the forest and the creatures that inhabit it. After our last battle we cautiously reentered the forests on the eastern edge of the clearing surrounding the town.

The beasts of the forest were waiting for us, but they sprang their attack too soon and my men were ready and waiting for their onslaught. Their forces were accompanied by a Giant Dragon Ogre Shaggoth, a horrendous monstrosity foully corrupted with disease and decay. This creature strode onto the field ahead of chanting and braying beastmen with an unnatural confidence, no mortal could stand before this vision of death.

Man might not have the sheer brute might to match such a freak of nature but our ingenuity compensates. The very first moments of the battle saw the beast struck by a cannonball to the chest, with a great howl it staggered backwards, mortally wounded. The rattle of my outriders handguns provided the final wound to slay the beast.

This one act took the fight out of the beasts and my men advanced into their lines and swept the stunned creatures away, our only notable loss ironically was the self destruction of my helblaster volley gun. I humbly request requisition of a new piece.

I quickly assembled a patrol and sent them out to hit the flank of the enemy whilst I gathered the rest of the troops for a supporting maneuver.

Sigmar was with the men that day because they hit the orc lines unaware and the impetus of the attack confused the beasts and sent them running.  I have sent word to Herr Rufas the Eccentric, defender of the fair town of Auenwaldheim that he will be having many guests arive at his doorstep soon.

Commander Helstrom,

It saddens me to report a tragic loss to our cause. Our routine slash and burn of the forests around Egonsdorf began today at dawn and all is going well. I predict that next week all going to plan we should be able to begin road construction to link the oasis of civilisation together in this wilderness and one day I hope all this land will be verdant, fertile plains.

We clashed with the beasts of the Lord of Decay again today and though we beat them off the field, the battle this time was a struggle and I lost many of my men. Foul Minotaurs and Pestigor ripped my swordsmen to shreds. Thanks to the Hunters of Sigmar and the Morrian redeptionists, they aided my state troops on the opposite flank to this slaughter and routed the majority of the beat herd.

They could not reach the other flank in time and much slaughter was wrought upon my men, it was Herr Stilgarr and the Battle Shrine of Morr that was the focal point for the heroic stand of the men of the Ostermark. As they died to a man, the final moments of the battle saw four minotaurs charge through my men and smashed asunder the battle shrine.

Soon afterwards a cannonball ripped into the bull headed beasts and slew them all in one fell swoop. This saved the life of the High Priest of Morr Stilgarr, it did not save some of the priceless relics of Morr that were stored in his mobile altar. The beasts made off with them into the forest before the rest of my forces could catch up with them.

Stilgarr lies wounded in his bed and I vow to Morr, Sigmar and you, my commander, that I shall return these relics of Morr before evil can be wrought upon them, or that tales of their loss  begin to dishearten the god fearing people of Egonsdorf.

4th July

Today is a black day in the history of the Irregulars.  Today we discovered the bitterness of victory in a battle that should not have been fought.

It began early in the morning, our scouts reported a large throng of dwarfs were approaching our position.  I believed that once we had explained our orders the dwarfs would be persuaded to divert their march away from Egondorf.  And to ensure there was no accidental clashes I ordered our patrols to return.

Alas I had no idea what this apparently innocent action would provoke.  It appears that as the patrols converged back on our position the dwarfs became convinced that they were being surrounded.  A hastily organized cavalry force was dispatched to explain the situation to the dwarfs.  But it was too late, the dwarfs seeing cavalry riding towards them opened fire and needless battle ensued.

Fortunately for our forces the battle took place around one of our prepared artillery positions, affording our side superior heavy fire power.  This was noticeable from the start our cannons, mortar and rockets sewing destruction among the dwarf artillery and missile troops.

I found myself commanding my personal guard of greatswords, supported by the Irregular swordsmen led by Captain Fredericks, bearer of our army standard.  I was confident that our infantry line would hold.

How wrong I was to be proved.  The dwarfs fought with furious anger and my men were falling left and right.  Lord Morin Ironhammer himself leaving a bloody gape in the swordsmen regiment he had engaged.  Even my own greatswords were being cut to pieces by the dwarf warriors axes.

Such was the dwarfen fury that I am ashamed to say our line failed and ran before them.  Our position looked utterly hopeless.  As I shouted for my men to hold and reform desperately before our retreat took full effect and our army be lost.

Then just as Lord Ironhammer was shouting his victory cry there was a massive boom.  At near point blank range our last function great cannon spoke.  As the cloud of smoke cleared Lord Ironhammer had fallen.  Struck by the iron shot.

The battle seemed to pause as the two sides were stunned by this impossible action.

I was able to rally our infantry and counter attack the now shaken dwarfs.  The loss of Lord Ironhammer took the fight out of the dwarfs and they fled the field.

A truce was called and both sides collected their dead and injured.  As I reviewed the battle it struck me that rarely is such bravery so wasted as I witnessed today.

4th July

Whilst I was lamenting the battle against the dwarfs another part of the Irregulars had been seconded to High Priest Johan Klast.  He and his warrior priest attendant demanded that the Irregulars lend their forces to his sortie to find the Druchi raiders.

As a devout man, I have no wish to quarrel with the priesthood.  Thus two battalions of Irregulars marched off with High Priest Klast, who had assembled a combined force that included many Hunters of Sigmar and the services of a Steam Tank from the Imperial College of Engineers.

Late in the afternoon Klast’s sortie found their quarry.  A large contingent of Druchi raiders accompanied by all manner of monstrous beasts.  The Druchi were not unaware of Klast’s approach and with deafening roars the battle commenced.

The cannon’s scored an early hit on one of the great winged beasts but alas it did not fall.  The crews were then quickly overwhelmed by the Druchi flying forces.

But High Priest Klast had set a trap.  His infantry regiments were placed behind his guns, allowing them to counter charge and take revenge for the loss of the guns.

The Hunters of Sigmar charged on both flanks, routing and destroying all opposition.

Seeing his army was being destroyed the leader of the loathsome Druchi was forced to retreat.  Johan Klast led the victory anthem and the Irregulars returned to camp in boisterous voice.

After establishing our position at the fort of Waldberg, I deemed it necessary to abandon the position and move eastward towards the town of Auenwaldheim.  Upon discovery that was the orc objective I ordered our troops to move with all haste to reinforce Herr Rufas the Eccentric of the Celestial Order.

As we marched an aide approached reporting that some of our men, who had been captured, had been spotted in a slave carravan with a mixture of greenskin and Chaos Dwarf guards.  I dispatched a small contingent of swordsmen with a group of huntsmen and two Hunters of Sigmar, who lead the attack.

Normally, I would not write you for such a small battle as this, but the outcome was a great success.  Our men charged valiantly and scattered the evil forces and freed every last man.

Let it be known to all that while they still live we will fight for them!  This is a great day for our Empire.  Spirits have been at it's highest since we have arrived.

High Commander Ortolf Von Brennenburg, Helstrom’s 4th Army:

Sir, I am pleased to report good news!  Yesterday evening we arrived on the outskirts of Ft Waldberg with several hundred refugees from Mattengard.  As we were ushering the civilians into the protection of the fort, the towering form of a giant appeared on the horizon; it was a Night Goblin War Party that had been trailing us along the forest road for some time.  As the sun began to set, the Night Goblins attacked.  The men took the field and set up a line of defense before the fort.  The Hunters of Sigmar went out before us and drew out the fanatics, which by Sigmar’s blessing spun away from our forces.  My brave Reiklanders went toe to toe with the terrible Giant and showed their courage as they refused to give an inch of ground.  The momentum of the greenskin attack began to falter as Brothers Thabius and Lucas used the power of Sigmar to dispel their foul magic and the greenskin horde succumbed to infighting in their frustration.  The battle was won when the Spearmen and their detachments toppled the giant (away from them – thank Sigmar) and the Halberdiers charged the howling monster and cut it to ribbons.  The field was ours and the remaining goblins disappeared back into the darkness of the forest.  I “interrogated” a captured goblin and learned that this was a raiding party of a villain known as “The Snoot”.  He seems to have evaded capture along with his foul shamans.  Though the enemy dead lay everywhere, I fear that there are many more of these creatures still lurking in the dark forest.

General Helstrom,

It is my duty to report on a double engagement with dwarves that was forced upon us just south of Mattengard.  As we guarded the engineers, who were widening and clearing the road for the evacuees, a force of dwarves came upon us and demanded that we leave immediately.  I refused, forewarned of the dwarven treachery in ordering their hired ogre scum against Mattengard, and we faced battle.  The enemy artillery and missile troops were skilled, and Captain Helmgart was left with no choice but to order the retreat.  However, the Hunters of Sigmar refused his command and instead charged the enemy artillery.  It was a suicidal action, yet they crashed through the gun crews with nary a man lost, routing the dwarves and granting us victory.

They returned almost immediately from over the next hill, however, reporting that we had apparently only engaged a scouting column of the enemy army.  Unknown to us, they were laying out camp a mere mile away.  Without hesitation, I ordered all our forces forward.  Reinforced with the 3rd Battalion of Spears and more artillery, Captain Helmgart again advanced.  Precision artillery fire broke the enemy's counter-battery abilities, and they were forced to advance.  The Hunters of Sigmar outflanked them and our line held strong, breaking the enemy army completely.  They have retreated west; I ordered the pursuit off in order to maintain our protection of the engineers at the road.

The men are in high spirits, and Brother Otto's "Prayer Against the Dwarves" has been set to a rather raucous tune in the camp.  I will continue the patrol near Mattengard for the time being, but am also sending three battalions south with a contingent of Reiksguard and three batteries of artillery to guard the road to Waldorf.  With your permission, I will also begin construction on a series of outposts around Mattengard - using the engineers that I have with me - in order to better divine enemy maneuvers.

This is the fluff I submitted along with my battle results on the website. I think I hit on all of our objectives.

General Rodimutz, Helstrom's 4th,

Sir, after receiving your messenger and verifying your seal I have begun the march north towards Mattengard to assist in it's defence. We have encountered many refugees on the roads and have taken them into our protection. The Black Company encamped for the evening just south of Hunter's Haven and I held a meeting with my officers explaining your plans for the Black Company in the upcoming campaign. It was during this meeting that the High Elves under a Flaming Phoenix banner launched a surprise attack on the inn we were staying in. The first moments of the battle were tense as myself, my officers and my ogre bodyguards held the inn from a repeated attack including a shock assault by the elven elite swordsmen. I am proud to report that we never gave an inch of ground and repulsed the assault, inflicting reivous casualties on the enemy. Once the ground assault had passed we bunkered down and weathered the storm of arrows and other missiles that pounded the inn. Sadly, one of my trusted bodyguards fell to the sustained bombardment. Chancing a look out at the battlefield I saw that the elves were bringing up their cavalry and infantry for another assault. We prepared ourselves to sell our lives dearly when I heard the distinct sound of the pipes of the black company approaching the inn. The elves heard it too and began positioning their lines to intercept the Company. I saw the beautiful sight of Captain Carlito's banner as his pikemen emerged from the woods accompanied by a cavalry troop of the Hunter's of Sigmar! The units charged into the fray and locked the elves into a deperate fight. The skirimishers from the Petrograd Pistoliers relieved my bodyguard from the inn and I led a counter-charge with my ogres into the elf flank and destroyed the spearmen and cavalry. The elves unleashed a withering barrage of missile fire into Carlito's regiment and many pikemen fell but they held firm. Adolphus Kruge, my light wizard, managed to harnass the powers at his command and brought down a comet from the heavens to repay the elves for their cowardice. Seeing their hopeless situation, the elves began to retreat from the field of battle and were harrassed by the Hunters of Sigmar long into the night. Our casualties were light given the circumstances and the Black Company will be ready to move again by first light. Tomorrow we will escort the engineers from Nuln up to Mattengard to assist with the road improvements there.

Respectfully,
General Wolfgang Greiss, The Black Company

Supporting Fluff:
General Rodimutz, Helstrom's 4th,

I wish to report that a scouting party under Captain Johannes Bergstrom encountered a Dwarf raiding party scouting the same area around Mattengard ahead of our main column. Captain Bergstrom's force first made contact when a knight was pitched from his saddle by a bolt. At first, they thought they may be in contact with green skins or perhaps the remnants of the elf raiding force we encountered two days ago. Captain Bergstrom began to sweep the forests with his skirmishers, supported by a small troop from the Hunter's of Sigmar. The enemy force was well concealed and hard to detect at first although they were able to track them by sound. The scouts closed around the suspected enemy position and a unit of skirmishers was pelted with crossbow bolts. The celestial wizard, Marius Steuben, managed to cast a comet from the heavens onto the enemy lines which smashed into the ground illuminating the foe. At the same time the skirmish line made visual contact with the crossbowmen and a series of shots were exchanged. Upon noticing that the "enemy" were dwarfs, the scouting party brke contact and a cease fire was called. It was an unfortunate skirmish but we were able to scout the surrounding area and verify that it was clear as well as identifying the dwarf thane as one Grimgori Stonebeard.

The main column should be in Mattengard early next morning along with the engineer team from Nuln to work on the road improvements.

High Commander Rodimutz, Helstrom’s 4th Army:

This afternoon we had some action with the enemy several leagues south of Mattengard.  Brothers Thabius and Lucas led two battalions south this morning in an effort to clear the forest that was encroaching upon the road and therefore making it unsafe for travel.  The men were busy at this hard labor for the majority of the day and were looking forward to the relative comfort of their tents when a force of orcs and goblins burst from the forest late in the afternoon.  Brother Thabius got the men to their feet with his infamous powers of oratory and the battle lines were drawn.  There was a great deal of skirmishing across the clearing and both sides fell to volleys of shot and the cruel, black arrows of the goblins.  Several deranged fanatics were released close to our lines and though we only had near misses and no casualties, the tired mens’ nerves were frayed.  A regiment of huge orcs then emerged from within the mob and surged towards our lines.  Brother Thabius readied the Halberdiers and they took the charge but what happened next cannot be easily confirmed by the survivors.  The orcs flew into a terrible blood-lust that startled the men.  Sir, we have faced orcs before but few men will speak of the terror they faced today!  The orcs tore through the Halberdiers like grapeshot and seemed to cut down every other man with their massive weapons.  The Halberdiers turned and fled and managed to outrun the beasts thank Sigmar!  It was only the countercharge from the second battalion that saved the engagement from being a complete rout.  The Spearmen broke a unit of goblins and chased them into the woods while the Halberdiers managed to regain their nerve and re-entered the fight.  As we readied for the second charge, the orcs turned and melted back into the forest.  I do not know why they left the field, but we were grateful to Sigmar.  We narrowly escaped destruction this day and have returned to Mattengard with our wounded.  This is dangerous duty - this hunt for the crown.

I dispatched a patrol of two infantry regiments to watch the area south from whence we came and in no time they ran headlong into an orc band along the road.

It was a hard fought engagement and a brave stand by archers of the Swordsmen regiment held off a mob of black orcs and goblins.  This gave the rest of the patrol time to gather their strength and send the greenskins running.

After many days on the march the Irregulars were still far from their objective.  The mood around camp at night was very tense, the men were much happier in the heavily fortified region around Egonsdorf.

Our alertness paid off when our vanguard force of Hunters of Sigmar narrowly avoided an ambush by more Druchii raiders.  The sounds of the reptilian beasts they use as mounts giving slight warning.

The Hunters wasted no time before galloping to the charge.  One the right flank heavy fire of bolts rained down driving off the Hunters attack.

But the frontal charge tactic seemed to work well elsewhere, with chariots and Druchii spears being trampled down.

Although this seemed a great victory with few casualties the Hunters of Sigmar did not rejoice as the foul sorceress that led the raiders escaped into the forest.  One wounded Druchii did reveal in his boasts that these Druchii were known as the Dark Ones of Karond Kar, and before he died from his wounds he called on Nadasir to avenge him.  It seems there are many bands of Druchii in this region.

11th July

As our main force rejoined our vanguard after the clash with the Druchii sorceress we tried to get our bearings to plot our route to Tor Thana.  It was proving as mysterious as its reputation.

While following what turned out to be another wrong turn our scouts reported what appeared to be a siege train coming down from the north towards our position.  Taking no chances I ordered our troops into defensive positions and deployed our cannons.

As the enemy forces can into view we were shocked to see a large force of Chaos Dwarfs with several artillery pieces.  Could these be the Chaos Dwarf combat engineers rumoured to be aiding the greenskins?

The banner’s they flew bore the marks of the ruinous powers.  So I ordered the attack and our cannons opened fire.  Accurate cannon fire destroyed two of the enemy artillery pieces before they could fire a shot.

The Hunters of Sigmar and our own knights charged forward, their plate armour protecting them from the bolts being fired at them.  As I saw this I began to think something was wrong.  Did the Chaos Dwarfs use crossbows?

As the infantry regiments closed my concerns grew.  The enemy in front of us did not act in the usual frenzied manner of chaos troops.  In fact they were quiet and disciplined.

The enemy was giving ground seeming reluctant to fight.  Thus when they finally broke I did not order a pursuit. Something was definitely not right, I could not see any chaos symbols on the retreating troops.

The enemy general suddenly fired his crossbow into some trees, there was a flash and our mistake was revealed.  The force in front of us was Dawi, not Chaos Dwarfs at all.  The Dwarf leader approached me and I greeted him with my name.

"I am Bradock Braksson of the Karag Garaz trading force and I have reason to believe we where both deceived by an individual I would now really like to see dead. I am sure we are both sorry for what has happened here but I’m afraid i must make a quick exit, for the culprit behind this isn’t far away and I would like to have some revenge" replied the Dwarf.

As Bradock departed I couldn’t help wondering if the Druchii sorceress had enacted some of her revenge.

12th July

Close to midday we finally saw the crumbling spires of Tor Thana.  In the distant sky we could see strange figures wheeling around accompanied by flashes of odd coloured lightning.  All around were signs of armies on the move.  Columns of Dwarfs seemed to be converging on the ruined city, along with their allies.  The Irregulars were pleased see that Boris Hertwig’s Ulricswaffe in their Ostermark purple and white uniforms had reached the city slightly before us.

With Boris’s men holding a strongpoint on a nearby hill I advanced the Irregulars on Tor Thana.  As we got closer fighting began to erupt all around us, it was hard to keep track of friend or foe in all the fighting.  Before we could reach the city a large force of Druchii launched an attack on my forces.  Recognising the vivid scar on the neck of the leaders dragon I realised that these were the same Druchii that had attacked us at Egonsdorf.

Seeing the dragon diving down towards my regiment I reached to my belt and drew a small pistol and loosed a round at the Druchii leader. As the smoke cleared I saw the Druchii fall from the saddle of his mount and hit the ground. The dragon, surprised by the sudden absence of his master, headed skywards and circled around.

Seeing the Druchii leader grounded I spurred my trusty warhorse and charged at him. The Druchii bellowed a challenge and stood his ground until the last second before sidestepping and planting his Halberd in the ground. The horse ran straight though the end of the weapon, screeching a terrible note as it fell. I was thrown to the ground before quickly rising to my feet. The Druchii pressed his attack swinging his weapon in a deadly arc, which I barely got my sword up to block.

“Pitiful” the Druchii spat “You should learn to stay out of our business you pitiful lapdogs of the false elves. Rackieth ordered me to this battlefield to take care of you but I gladly take the opportunity to show you the error of your ways”.

“I know of your kind, the followers of Malekith” I replied.

“Is that what the false elves have told you”, sneered the Druchii “While I Kaihlik Rashia serve Malekith most of us do not. Have the Asur told you the heartstone is not a magical artefact to cleanse the area but a powerful magical weapon designed to kill everyone living in this area?"

“I care not for stones, I am here on the orders of Lord Veldemere of Helstrom’s 4th to defend the Empire and that is all you need know Druchii”. Hoping to take him off guard I lunged at Kaihlik who parried the blow and with blinding speed brought the weapon around and cut into my side. Fortunately, some Hunters of Sigmar had broken through part of the battle and rode my aid.  The Druchii Kaihlik escaped on his dragon.

In the confusion it was impossible to say which side was winning the battle for Tor Thana.  I decided that I could not risk the lives of the Irregulars with no clear plan for victory.  Thus we made an orderly withdrawal to the safety of the Ulricswaffe camp.

It was then Boris informed me that new ordered had arrived, we were no longer to attack Tor Thana.  As my wounds were treated I began to plan how to repay Lord Kaihlik… with interest of course.

Special Circumstances: This was actually an instore mega-battle, there were 6 "Empire" players and 4 "O&G" players (in fact it was evil armies versus good armies).  I ended up with 1500 points with the Druchii having 2000 points.  It was around 7k for each side, but most importantly we had the greater number of inexperienced players (and they had 2 lords to our none).  In fact the Druchii and I hardly fought against one another at all as we were quite far apart (two 6x4 tables pushed together).  My side of the table went in my favour but the other table got wiped out (mostly by Tomb Kings).  In the end the store manager decided the winning side with the mark 1 eyeball system (i.e. swift glance at whats left and guess).  Being a nice chap I allowed the DE opponent to record it as a battle between us, so that the Druchii could get a bit of their fluff mentioned.  Suffice to say I will be out for revenge next week!

General Rodimutz, Helstrom's 4th,

This morning the Black Company transferred responsibility for Mattengard over to the 51st Reikland Halberdiers. Currently we are marching south towards the Tower of Moonrise and hope to link up with elements of the northern battlegroup there. I have sent word to Neuman Kleinhurst, my wizard, to cease his activities around the Monolith and to link up with the army there. I have also posted several small detachments along the roads to provide security for the engineers who are busy constructing small watchtowers along the road to be used by Imperial troops and the road wardens. I have received a report from one such detachment under Sergeant Mueller that they were engaged by a horde of zombies early this afternoon. He stated in his report that they rose from the ground and were on top of them before they were even aware of their presence. Falling back to a more defensible position allowed the detachment to reorganize and attack the cursed undead from the flanks, the skirmishers sending many back to Morr as they poured pistol shots into the stinking masses. A twisted creature, able to wield powerful magics, nearly turned the tide against the detachment but Sergeant muller was able to dispatch the creature with a strong arm and a stout hawthorn stake through the heart. With the death of their summoner, the zombies began to crumble and the day was won. Sergeant Mueller, being a solid Stirlander, buried the dead face down and read the fallen Morr's last rites. I have sent a small detachment to reinforce him while construction of the tower continues. I expect to be in the vicinity of the Tower of Moonrise by the week's end barring any interference from the greenskins around Morr's Gate.

General,

I am glad your able force will be deployed 'round the Tower area.  Please forward the gold Pendant I have enclosed to the good Sgt. Mueller.  It was uncovered in a sealed chamber some time ago by some Nuln excavators building a new foundry.  Using old almanacs I have discovered it to be a symbol of potent warding against the undead and figured that Mueller has earned his place as it's next rightful owner.  I have also entrusted this courier with a bag of gold, to be divided between Mueller and his men - a good Stirlander always needs more money since we are always fortunate to have their services!  Again, please see he gets it.

I have also decided to increase your company's pay by one half, and the Emperor himself informs me of his happiness of the Mercenaries presently in his employ.  I heretell of a general order being prepared that will raise the standard fees paid to Dogs Of War throughout the whole of the Empire - but of course please keep that under your hat!

As one soldier to another,

High Commander Ortolf Von Brennenberg, Helstrom's 4th Army:

Sir, I am eager to report victory on the field!  We began our march southward yesterday afternoon and met the enemy around dusk on the road south of Hunter's Haven.  The army was resting at the construction site of one of the new watchtowers and I consulted with the sentries stationed there and learned of Night Goblin activity in the forest to the east.  A contingent of Halfling shortbows then scouted the forest and reported a force of Night Goblins moving through the underbrush and one very loud Giant bawling and uprooting trees as he went.  I prepared the artillery, readied the men and surprised the enemy as they charged from the tree line, eager to destroy the seemingly unprotected tower.  The men were brave sir, and I have given the laurels to the crew of the Great Cannon Fritz as they skillfully sent a cannonball through the Giant's chest just minutes into the engagement.  My Reiklanders were hot for revenge and they ran down the Night Goblins with a ruthlessness that surprised me.  We have taken some prisoners and are learning much from them before we dispatch them to Morr.  It appears that there is a great deal of activity up on the nearby mountain known as Morr's Gate (they call it Gork's mouth or some such nonsense).  The prisoners would not speak of the crown and all attempts at interrogation have yielded nothing.  I will continue to pursue all leads and will perhaps send a foray into the forest to the east to determine if there is any truth to these rumors of a greenskin encampment.

13th July

Our new orders assigned the Irregulars to intelligence gathering.  We were joined by a member of the College of Light.  He informed us that something strange was happening around Marchens Henge.  The winds of magic were disturbed.  This was just the kind of clue we had been hoping for.  We set off for the henge with all speed.

14th July

As we approached Marchen’s Henge it was near dusk.  Our scouts informed me that several other forces were also converging at the henge.  A large throng of dwarfs was nearby and ahead we could hear the howls of chaos troops, the hiss of Druchii cold ones and just barely visible the silent ranks of the undead of Khemri.

As night began to fall battle commenced.  A brief shouted conversation with a representative of the dwarfs concluded that we would put aside out differences to meet this common foe.

As the battle progressed the chaos forces seemed to be trying to take control of the central altar of the henge.  I led our greatswords forward to bar their progress, all of us could feel the unpleasant feeling of magical build up.

The Hunters of Sigmar held our left flank, making good account for themselves.  Fighting of cold ones, chariots and chaos knights.

My greatswords and I came under heavy attack.  Both demons and chaos knights crashing into our ranks.  But we would not yield, would not break.

We held on until the Light Wizard was able to find the correct means to disrupt the magical build up in the henge.  Then with a sound that was felt more that heard the wizard succeeded.  The magic build up was discharged harmlessly.

Their plan foiled the enemy began to give ground and only the darkness prevented our forces from exacting an even higher toll upon them.

Our scouts marked the path of the fleeing armies making best judgement as to their destination.  This information was sent by pigeons to the nearest army of Helstrum’s 4th to the enemy destination.  And a copy was sent to Lord Veldemere’s head quarters in Egonsdorf.

[This was a mega-battle for Marchens Henge in GW Glasgow.  If the chaos troops ever controlled the middle of the henge at the end of the Empire turn a 3000 point Nurgle Demon Legion army would appear on the chaos side (one of the staff members armies).  It was an extremely decisive victory with the chaos forces being defeated in less than the full 6 turns.]

General Rodimutz, Helstrom's 4th,

I hope this message finds you in good health, sir. Sgt Mueller was proud to receive the amulet you sent and swore to perform his duty no matter what. This afternoon we arrived at the Tower of Moonrise to find that a Dark Elf raiding party had arrived ahead of us, their scouts already prowling in the area around the Tower. I immediately deployed the Company from column into line of battle and went straight in to secure the tower. The Dark Elves were led by a sorceress of great power on a pegasus and her army was comprised mostly of infantry with some chariot support and two bolt throwers. I sent the Cutthroats and Brom's Anvils in to tie up the elf infantry while the ogres flexed around the right side of the tower supported by the Averland Pikes. I rode around wide of the right flank and immediately found myself under fire from a previously unseen bolt thrower which killed two of my men. The elf assault came on with a fury and I found myself surrounded by scores of elves. While fighting for my life I lost sight of the main battle for a time until I could rally my knights and rejoin the fray. The battle seemed to sway back and forth and the war hydra wrought terrible destruction amongst the Petrograd Pistoliers and the Cutthroats died to a man holding off a chariot and a large regiment of elf warriors. Dark magic was strong in the air but my pair of mages were able to contain the worst of the sorceress' magic with ancient words of power. Seeing the threat that the war hydra presented, Gragrok and his man eaters, supported by the Averland Pikes, bravely charged the fell beast and under a flurry of axe blows and pike thrusts, killed the terrible creature and its handlers. The Blue Star Irregulars secured the Tower as my light lancers took out the bolt thrower battery. The Dark Elf rmy was utterly crushed and sensing her imminent capture, the sorceress took flight on her Dark Pegasus and fled the battlefield, leaving us in complete control of the area. As my scouts swept the area, they came upon the encampment of the Dark Elf army and after a brief skirmish with a few guards we were able to secure their encampment and free several score of captives being held there. Most of them will survive, although they look as if they've been through hell. I also would like to report that as we passed the area known as Morr's Gate, we could see off in the distance some sort of large construct of some sort. It looked like the crude creation that Orcs are known to create. I shall dispatch a scouting party to investigate once we have finished securing the area around the Tower of Moonrise.

Respectfully,

Whilst marching back to Egonsdorf to replenish supplies we found our path blocked by a dawi force.  Unfortunately negotiations were cut short when the dawi war machines opened fire.  Sheer bad luck had caused the Irregulars to run into the forces of Morim Ironhammer, who still held their grudge after our previous encounter.

Once again I thanked Sigmar for the assistance of the Hunter of Sigmar.  The stoic knights charging through the Dawi fire to out flank them.

Seeing their precious machines in danger of capture the dwarfs scuppered their machines and fled their position.

We resumed our march and successfully resupplied at Lord Veldemere’s head quarters at Egonsdorf.

17th July

Following a possible lead for information concerning the Nemesis Crown High Priest Klast led the Irregulars to a valley in the Barren Hills that was uncomfortably close to Tor Thana.  Meanwhile I remained in Egonsdorf to recover from my wounds.  The Irregulars were supposed to meet with a witch hunter who had learned something through interrogation of prisoners.

When he arrived he was disturbed to find no sign of this witch hunter.  Scouts were dispatched to try and find him.  When they did not return High Priest Klast became concerned and ordered the Irregulars to form a defensive square.

This proved to be our salvation.  Barely had we reformed when Lord Kaihlik’s Druchii sprang their ambush.

The Irregulars suffered many casualties from a storm of Druchii bolts.  And an entire swordsman regiment was run down by Lord Kaihlik on his mighty dragon.

Just as the battle looked most grim our artillery finally got a shot at the dragon.  Cannons and the oh-so unreliable Helblaster Volley Gun let loose in a thunderous roar.  A huge black cloud obscured vision for a few seconds.  Then, as the breeze dispersed the smoke, a great cheer went up as there was no sign of Lord Kaihlik or his dragon.

Their leader gone the remaining Druchii were swiftly repelled.  It was a costly victory but hopefully we have seen the last of the nefarious Lord Kaihlik.

I have sent a pigeon to Lord Veldemere in Egonsdorf warning that we have been receiving false intelligence.  The search for the crown continues.

Outcome: Marginal Victory
Cool Moment: Well the dragon died eventually, but nothing really went right in this game (ok the Icon of Magnus and Imperial Banner did stop terror from loosing me the game but thats pretty negative).
Uncool Moment: Realising that your NC rating can go DOWN when you win!!! (I'm guessing due to not achieving a massacre, but it cost me dearly  :-( )

General Helstrom,
The offensive has begun in ernest!  Everything is going as well as can be expected thus far.  Reinforcements are coming in from Talabheim and Altdof by riverboat.

Our gunboats are being accompanied by Falcon and Hawkships of the Asur fleet.  Our complete stranglehold of the area should be completed by the end of the week.

On shore, things are moving slowly through the woods.  Our men hack and claw their ways through the forests into an occasional clearing, but these areas are highly sought after by everyone in the forest.

One of my patrols fought an orc warband for one such resting spot.  Night was approaching quickly and the men were eager for a nice area out of the trees to rest.  It was a brief encounter and our Hunters of Sigmar rolled up the flank of the enemy to secure our lines.  In the end neither side could claim the patch and withdrew just out of range of bow shot and made their camps.  In the morning my men found the orcs to be gone, but a potent smell of wet fur was present.

The reports of the vile ratmen must be true, sir. My guards are ready for them though.
O.v.B.

General Rodimutz, Helstrom's 4th,

The area around the Tower of Moonrise is swarming with elves of all types. Per your instructions, I have sent the Company out into the Great Forest to take the fight to those who would oppose us. Today we met a war host of High Elves and I recognized the banner of their leader as the same of the one who attacked us at the outset of the campaign. We were able to catch the by surprise and cause discord and ruin amongst their lines. The ogres and heavy cavalry in particular caused horrendous casualties amongst the dainty elves as their heavy axes and lances cleaved their frail bodies. We were able to take some prisoners and, after some encouragement from the lads, spoke of a stone nearby that holds great power and they were seeking that stone to tap its power no doubt. I will press the prisoners for more information.

Respectfully, General Wolfgang Greiss

and a 2nd report!General Rodimutz, Helstrom's 4th,

The high elf prisoners that we interrogated made mention of a large army of their kinsmen that landed a few nights ago in the area. I sent my scouts out to find this army while I finished securing the Tower of Moonrise. After two days none had returned and I had received no word, so the Company, reinforced now by my cousin and his band, moved into the forest to conduct a movement to contact and force an engagement. We happened on a large clearing and found that the elven army was waiting for us and a meeting engagement ensued. Their general in particular, mounted on a terrible red dragon, wreaked havoc amongst our lines and many of the men fled rather than face that terrible beast. My own cousin was killed by the blade of the elf war master. The battle was quickly turning into a rout until the cannon crews were able to draw a bead on the great dragon and wounded it severely, causing it to seek cover. With the great beast gone for the moment the paymaster and I were able to rally what was left of the Company and counter-attack the elf lines with precision cavalry strikes aimed at their citizen levies. These strikes proved effective and caused a general panic in their lines with three regiments fleeing the battle. The fighting bogged down at that point into an ugly melee where I myself was caught in the shoulder by an elf blade. The bitter struggle continued until nightfall and both armies left the field bloodied but unbowed. This new elf general is quite capable and I fear that when his beast returns to health he will be back for more slaughter. For now, I am constructing a small fort on a rise to reorganize and reinforce. We have been severely bloodied by the elves this time around but we will not give our ground without a fight. I have sent messengers to my captains positioned along the roads to make haste for this location so that we may take the offensive again soon. I have also received word from my Tilean allies that they are a mere two days away by barge with a small force as well. I will report again once we are prepared to resume the offensive.

Respectfully,
General Wolfgang Greiss, The Black Company

High Commander Rodimutz, Helstrom’s 4th Army:

Sir, this morning I ordered a force of my finest bodyguards to a surprise daylight raid upon the camp of a Night Goblin warlord known as the “Snoot”.  I have been sparring with this Goblin since we arrived on the Border and sought to capture him once and for all.  I felt that by taking him, we might gain intelligence regarding the activities of the goblins, orcs and evil dwarfs that have set up some sort of outpost around the cave of Morr’s Gate.  My men had the advantage of a bright sunrise and some rather thick fog. The approach had been cleared beforehand by a company of Halfling Shortbows and the Hunters of Sigmar were at the ready to spirit away the captives.  The men charged bravely and made off with several of the startled goblins.  We had the upper hand until a great horde of orcs returned to the camp midway through our attack (back from some pillage no doubt).  We did not anticipate these reserves and sadly, my men were quickly overwhelmed.  May Sigmar have mercy on Sergeant Streicher and his men - they died brave Reiklanders.  None of the captives we interrogated knew anything of value about the fortifications at Morr’s Gate or the Crown.  I fear that our next move may be somewhat compromised due to our failure to capture the Snoot but I have faith that Sigmar will protect us in all our endeavors.

High Commander Rodimutz, Helstrom’s 4th Army:

Sir, we followed our unsuccessful raid two days ago with steady pressure on the greenskins.  I continue to press the army deeper into the forest as we leave no stone unturned in our search for the Crown and any that would stand in our way.  We have been working our way through the forest for several days and are now many leagues from the road.  The eerie quiet of these ancient glades makes this Reiklander long for the bawdy alehouses of home; some nights, the deathly silence is enough to chill a man's very soul.  This afternoon, the vanguard of the army met a force of orcs beneath the forest’s canopy.  We quickly moved up the battalions and sought to corner the enemy and therefore force him to battle.  It appears that the greenskins were attempting to ambush us but the brutes could not decide whether to fight or retreat from our forces and there was much squabbling in their ranks before they decided to advance.  Brother Myron led the Hunters of Sigmar on the left flank and the thunder of their hooves brought terror to the goblins and they turned tail and ran, abandoning their kin.  The Hunters then smashed into a battery of hastily entrenched bolt throwers and destroyed their pitiful "artillery".  In the center, Brothers Thabius and Lucas began to recite the Littany of Unforgiveness and whipped the men into a righteous fury.  So great was the men’s hatred of the greenskins for the injustice they have lain upon our people that I could barely command them!  They charged the startled orcs and the goblins were left to gnash their teeth in frustration as they got bogged down in the forest’s thicket.  Brother Lucas led the spearmen in a frontal charge against a unit of huge orcs and then smashed two to the ground with mighty swings of his hammer.  The spearmen drove their weapons home and the orcs fell as if they were wheat before the scythe.  Their orc boss howled with pain as our blows hit home, then turned and spurred his boar towards the wood line; so great was the fury of our men that even he lost his courage and ran like a whipped dog.  I ordered the men not to pursue as the darkness of this forest hides many dangers and did not wish them to fall victim in their excitement.  Tonight we camp on our field of victory!  Tomorrow, we will continue our advance towards Morr's Gate.

General Rodimutz, Helstrom's 4th,

After being reinforced by my Tilean allies I sent the Black Company on the march once again. My remaining scouts were able to pick up the High Elves trail and we tracked them to their encampment near the Hanging Tree. The scouts were compromised by the elves own outriders and after a brief exchange, my scouts returned to the column to report. With surprise lost, I ordered the Company into line of battle and went straight in to the fight. The elves put tremendous pressure on my left flank by concentrating their forces there in attempt to overwhelm them and stall my cavalry's involvement in the battle. The High Elf magic was indeed fearsome and caused a number os casualties amongst the ranks. My lancers swept around behind the High Elf encampment and destroyed their war machines before being routed by a group of great eagles. The pikes did an excellent job of stalling the elf main attack while my cavalry moved into position to flank the elf battle line and destroy his regiments in detail. Caught between the anvil of pikes and the hammer of the cavalry and ogres, the elves were routed and destroyed. While conducting reorganization and reconsolidation I was met by an Imperial herald stating that a massive Imperial and allied army was massing at the Hanging Tree to destroy the foul menace and that a host of darkness was also being assembled and that the Black Company was needed. Without hesitation I ordered the Company forward to join the Imperial army there.

Respectfully,
General Wolfgang Greiss

20-24th July

The Irregulars have marched hither and thither about the Barren Hills in search of the crown.

The roads have proved easy to travel, being controlled by many brigades of the Hunters of Sigmar.  And many times when marching through the forest our forces made contact with our Imperial forces making a big push to clear the forest.

Whenever our scouts reported enemy forces we dispatched carrier pigeons to alert fellow Imperial forces and Lord Veldemere at the Helstrum 4th HQ in Egonsdorf.

On the 24th the Irregulars, once again, found ourselves facing the Dwarfs of Lord Morim Ironhammer.  Though both sides are careful to observe polite rules of engagement the recent conflicts have led to some ill feelings.  A great rivalry is growing between us and the army of Lord Ironhammer.  At least it keeps both sides combat ready!

I must say that the Irregulars have gained much confidence from their past battles with Lord Ironhammer’s forces.  Though the thunder of the dwarf fire may have deterred lesser men, our troops marched through it and saw off the dwarfs.

The search for the crown continues.  Though I must admit that my personal feelings follow the example of Luthor Huss, seeking this crown is folly.  Though I will follow the commands of my superior officers and Emperor always.

25th July

Rumours of a newly unearthed tomb near the Tower of Vigilance found me leading the Irregulars to investigate.  This sounded like the kind of place one might find a crown.

As we neared the tomb we quickly realised that it was not a place where the dead rest.  The unquiet dead roamed the area around the tomb.  As we approached in battle formation the legions of the dead shambled into view.

I was more than happy to let High Priest Klast lead the Irregulars for this battle.  Singing rousing hymns to Sigmar the Irregulars marched forward.

Buoyed up by recent victories the Irregulars easily fought there way through the skeletons and zombies facing them.  The Hunters of Sigmar also shone, crushing the undead knights that opposed them.

The battle ended with High Priest Klast facing the vampire leading the undead force.  Though the undead creature was unearthly strong and fast, faith in Sigmar prevailed.  And the vampire was struck down, the undead force dispersed.

As it was fast approaching dark we decided to make camp some distance from the tomb and investigate tomorrow.

26th July

After a long an restless night camped near the Tower of Vigilance, the Irregular were marshalled by High Priest Klast for the attack on the tomb itself.

As soon as our cannon were set into position to provide covering fire for the attack the undead forces emerged from their hiding places and began marching towards us.

Dark shapes circled above our troops, and they swiftly descended on our guns, frightening off the crews.

It seemed as though yesterdays losses had made no difference to the ranks of the undead.  With several large regiments advancing through our handgunner’s accurate but ineffectual fire.  There was damage done to the undead though, occasional flashes of dazzling light accompanied the spells of our Light wizard.

As the infantry lines engaged it seemed like the Irregulars were being worn down.  For as many skeletons and zombies that were killed more rose to take their place.  High Priest Klast was hard pressed to hold the troops in place against the fearsome undead.

The battle was saved by our pistoliers, who had ridden carefully around the back of the undead army.  There they spotted the clutch of necromancers, whose magic sustained the undead.  In a brave charge they attacked the necromancers unit.  Though they were forced to flee they managed to slay two of the necromancers.  Without the dark magic to sustain them the undead army was pushed back until they crumbled to dust at our feet.

The undead threat over for the time being the ancient tomb was searched.  But alas nothing was found that gave any clue to the whereabouts of the crown.

High Priest Klast returned in a fury.  I will not repeat his words here, but he has refused to lead any army in search of the crown.  He is a strong supporter of Luthor Huss and leads daily prayers to Sigmar among the men, extolling Sigmar to show the evil of the crown to our beloved Emperor.

4th August

After a few days rest I led the Irregulars in one last push against the forces of evil.  It seems that having ousted the undead force from the tomb near the Tower of Vigilance they had migrated to Marchens Henge.

Fortunately I had anticipated another battle against the forces of the Vampire Counts, and had requested the aid of the colleges of magic from Lord Veldemere in Egonsdorf.  With the battle wizards bolstering our magical power we entered battle confidently.

Early in the battle our knights, the Hunters of Sigmar, charged out and swept aside ghouls and undead wolves.  Although many knights were later scattered by undead rising from the ground around them, their sacrifice was worthwhile, isolating the shambling units of skeletons and zombies.

Thus when our infantry advanced forcing the enemy to charge our detachments were able to outflank the enemy and the skeletons and zombies cutting down the undead.  At this point our wizards used their painstakingly prepared scrolls to prevent the enemy necromancers from reinforcing the undead infantry.  With their supply of reinforcements gone the undead were pushed back and crushed by our troops.

When the battle was over we faced the unpleasant task of burning the bodies.  No soldier of the Irregulars shall be defiled by foul magic in death.
