PLEASE NOTE: LOTS OF EARLY PICS AREN'T SHOWING ANYMORE. for some reason I can't modify and post with more than 3 images on it so will have to live will posting new pics later.
Hi all, Thanks for making me feel welcome here on the forums recently.
After much messing about, I’ve finally started an Empire army!!! I’m relatively new to the whole converting/painting scene (I’ve done a little 40K over the past year) but I love jumping in at the deep end - so with that in mind I have set off on a crazy mission to assemble/convert/paint a 10,000 point Empire army of entirely plastic - no metal models or bitz - just ‘coz I really stink with metal minis.
For a full list you can check out my thread in the Parade Ground (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=26461.0 (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=26461.0)) and I am also looking to trade for stuff I will need for the project (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=26519.0 (http://www.warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=26519.0)) - the army is based on “what would happen if the forces of chaos invaded and conquered most of the empire and the Emperor & the Cult of Sigmar had to make one last stand”. It’s gonna be full of WP’s, special characters, knights, flagallents and all manner of units. I’ve decided to model/paint the unit’s after the region that they are renowned in as I think the emperor would be able to call on the best of the best when he needs them (Nuln artillery train anyone?). For the bases I want to have a battlefield feel with a few chaosy bits of junk lying around and the odd dead guy.
I have started by getting my hands on an Army box and a battalion box - this will keep me busy for a little while at least. I will try to post on a regular basis but some weeks may be slow going so will see how I go. First up, just something to get me started. Have assembled the Flagellants that came in the army box (not a full unit yet) and working on the pistolliers. Will try to get a couple of units completed before I start painting. Will throw up a couple of photos in the next day or so.
Well I'm a big fat lier aren't I? :eusa_wall: OK going to start writing my update. :icon_redface:
-
Right Here we are - With the Conversion Comp & The Pleasant Surprise & a little something extra :icon_wink: constructed, I'm now at a stage where I am going into a painting frenzy. Obviously I can't show you the special projects yet but here is what I have on the painting board:

And the start of the artillery
(http://veseycreative.com/empire/artillery.jpg)
So - that'll keep me going for a while - but now I'll be painting in small batches at a time so will update as often as I can.
Bye for now.
-
Oh man i love your conversions. I wish i could afford all those models.
Now you have to paint it :icon_lol:
-
Thanks - I'm still a newbie really but it's fun to do lots of little changes to make your models different.
I've conned a few family members to buy me stuff so I haven't had to outlay too much yet - Now i have to afford all the paint!! :biggriin:
-
And all plastic, too. Dude...I'm impressed. As a matter of fact...
This might be one of the top 5 most impressive things that I have
seen in 10 years in hobby games. NICE!
-
Wow. Some rather large units of flagellants, crossbows, and pistoliers ... interesting. Some nice conversions in there. :icon_cool: :eusa_clap: :::cheers:::
-
Thanks heaps Killan - That means a lot. I've been dragging the chain the last few months trying to get the done & after looking at them for so long I'd really started to question whether I had made the right choices.
Hey GamesPoet - Yeah big numbers all around. Not really suited to winning games probably but I'm thinking, 10,000 points means anything they get into it with will pack a good punch so a few extra backups should help them last a little longer :icon_biggrin: (but can you image setting up on the board and seeing Crossbowmen 10 wide & 2 deep with a gunner captain, flanked by 2 detachments of 5 x 2 gunners - on a hill!! All 41 could fire!!)
If you check out my army list you'll see that there's a ton more large units to go :icon_biggrin: - Already done one of my 'Things With Wings' Characters for the comp but apart from that it's still all a blank canvas.
Well I've just undercoated so I guess it's off to decide what to paint first.
-
10,000pts.... :icon_cry:
Finish the army ninerfan, finish it for those of us with no money....
You can bet im watching this thread..
-
Some awsome conversions and a really good backstory I can't wait to see how this turns out
-
Loving the work dude, looking really cool. I cant wait to see them painted!!
-
Cheers guys :::cheers:::
Starting on the Crossbows & Gunners - They're the Hochland contingent
-
Huzzah, it has started!
Get to paintin' :icon_mrgreen:
-
Well - Things are cruising along at the moment but seeing as i will be away for 5 days over Easter, I thought I had better let you guys know that I am indeed painting (not just sitting on my a*** doing nothing :icon_twisted:).
Where we're up to: Still working through first layer of colour - still need to wash then highlight after that so they definitely look flat at the moment. Tried lots of different clothing patterns to bring more variety into it - we'll see how it works .
Will update again once I'm through the wash stage as that will be slightly more exciting to look at than this lot :biggriin:.
Till next time :::cheers:::
-
OK - Slowly getting somewhere.
Got back after Easter all freshened up and got a bit of work done .
Things With Wings Conversion is entered & Painted so as soon as the winner is announced I will put up some pics in here
Also just finishing up my Mini Exchange project so that has taken a little of my time too.
Anyways - back to the topic at hand - Have decided to go for a 'dirty' weathered look which also means no real highlighting will be done (partly 'cos I like th elook & partly 'cos I suck at highlighting). Also table standard so not going to try to get eyes done.

Really like your conversions! Look forward to the next update.
-
i like this conversions^^ and the colored soldiers are really very beautiful, congratulations

Thanks guys :::cheers:::

Everything in this blog so far looks great except for 1 little figure and its that Archlector on foot. For some reason I can't stand that head, and it looks like he has little to no neck. Plus, and this is my opinion, but I can't stand the Empire General on foot's body. Those legs!
-
Wow! That completed captain is great! I hope the rest of your army looks that good and from how it looks like its shaping up, it does indeed promise to do! Nicely done! :::cheers:::
-

Fair comments Volt - that arch lector head is from the 40K Chatchan kit (thought it looked ok as all the scrolls etc bulked out the rest of the body) Will see how things turn out - With the Capitan OTE with handgun, the pose is a bit static with those legs, I know. I was a little scared to get too fancy with him - got another one to do later with the other unit of crossbowmen - so he'll be more dynamic (and probably have to use those legs another 10 times or so, so will work out better ways to use them).
Cheers Perambulator :::cheers:::
-
I like the colours. :icon_biggrin:
-
Nice idea with putting the infantry packs on the backs of the horses!

Ah, I wondered where that head came from. And yeah, the colors look good.
-
Nice idea with putting the infantry packs on the backs of the horses!
Yeah - those horses just seem a little 'empty' to me. Needed to add a little something to them.
And thanks to those of you liking the colours - Pretty easy to replicate: White undercoat, Goblin Green & Merchrite Red (foundation paint), followed by a liberal wash of Delvan Mud. The Ice Blue one the ribbons & feathers will be continued throughout the entire army to help tie all the regions colour schemes together.
:::cheers:::
-
It's so... big
Amazing conversions and very well painted
What did you use for Kurt's wings?
-
Cheers :::cheers:::
I believe the wings are from the High Elf Silver Helms kit
-
I love the pink/purpe - green color scheme very much. I know 2 drawings of citizen in these colors and already tried to copy that scheme. How did you paint the purple?
-
For the Red (looks a little Purple) I started with the White undercoat (as I prefer the lighter & brighter colours I can get compared to Black undercoat),
I painted one layer only of Merchrite Red (foundation paint so one is enough) - & then washed with Delvan Mud.
that's all
Really easy to do, no mixing of paints, not lots of layers - Just the way I like it.
-
Had a great weekend with not much to do so another update for you. Finished my unit of pistoliers & first Warrior Priest - pics below

That's all for now - Great Cannon & Rocket Battery next - Fun!!
-
Awesome stuff. The action poses look a bit odd though :icon_razz: I like the comet firebrand on the WP's horse.
-
Yeah, I know what you're saying about those 'action poses'. Had an idea but not sure if it works - they're not glued to their mounts yet so I'll play around with the positioning to see if I can make them look better. If not, I guess I'll just need to replace them (someday).
-
:icon_cool: Your Pistoliers have entered the Matrix. :icon_cool:
Very well done with the green stuff. Big, robust units. I like it. :::cheers:::
-The General
-
wow man, bucket loads of figs to paint, I'm not envious. They all seem to be comming along nicely. I'm not too keen on the pistoler poses as it makes them look too unnatural, the stirrups wouldn't work that way. Nice work on the warrior priest though man!
-
I like the horse very much! haflingers?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haflinger_(horse)
maybe add some highlights on tail and ... erm.. that hair on the neck.... dunno the English word (nor the German LOL)
-
Hey again all - another update (having lots of time to paint at the moment),
Have adjusted the positioning of those two 'Matrix' riders. So hopefully I won't need to replace them later .

Working on my unit of 30 Flaggies now & just waiting for the conversion comp to be finalised so I can upload that entry here (as it is part of my army after all)
-
Good work on the Helstorm! I despise rocket batteries that aren't painted like giant bottle rockets... :-)
-The General
-
I love all the different colors.
-
.... dunno the English word (nor the German LOL)
The German one is "Mähne".

right! and the English one?

Mane.

Wow, awesome. I was sceptical about the mixed uniforms but it is already looking great!

Glad to see I'm not the only one :biggriin:

Wow, awesome. I was sceptical about the mixed uniforms but it is already looking great!
Cheers Guys :::cheers:::. I think the trick (at least it works for me) is to have One colour that is used as an accent across the whole army & using the same wash to finish them all also helps. I'm glad you think it's working, I've got almost every unit coming from a different town or provence so it would really suck if they didn't look like one army.
-
I'm also envious of the time and skill you have painting these guys. I'm returning to the hobby after a year absence and I just don't have the time to paint my guys (GCSE Exams and all). And even then I'm only painting 2000 points.
-
I personally prefer metal miniatures, but it's nice to see plastic can be done this well, as most of the stuff I've got to paint will be plastic
-

I don't really consider myself as having too much skill - I've only been in the hobby for maybe 2 years tops and this is only the second army i have done (first one was 40K chaos 2500 points - and painted straight from the pots). I think it shows what you can do with really only a basic knowledge and skill (have not mixed any colours - all standard GW colours & no highlighting as I always mess it up).
Time wise - well this is what I do to relax so I normally get up an hour or 2 early (around 6am) and get in a bit of relaxation & normally paint/build for one whole day on the weekends.

Yeah, the metal minis really do look great with all the extra detail - but unfortunately I have destroyed almost every metal conversion I have tried (and I can't pin properly either). The one issue I've got is finding a couple of plastic eagles for converting into griffins (one for Mount & one for War Altar) - Don't think GW do one so if anyone else can give me advice it would be appreciated.
-

So you are using Devlin Mud across the whole army?

Yep - I'm going to use other washes here & there for certain things but will still finish of each unit/mini with a Delvin Mud wash.

Man!!! Works been a little slow so a bit of extra time to paint (I love working from home :biggriin:)
Not the best light to take these but they cam out OK.

The fun continues with another update. Completed my Reiksguard with full command + Kurt Helborg & Ludwig (my own versions of them anyway).
If they all look a little drunk :icon_lol:, that's because they're not attached to their mounts & may have slipped when I was moving them around.

Onwards & upwards! Now onto my 30 swordsmen & Arch Lector - then I'll need to build some more minis as I will have run out of things to paint :biggriin:.
-
your horses look awesome.
-
cheers :::cheers:::
-
I love the color of Ludwigs horses armor.
-
Thanks - it's Ultramarines Blue on white undercoat (and of course washed with Delvan mud as everything in the army is)
-
YAY!!!!!! - The conversion comp is over!! (congratulations Steveb :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:)
I'm glad I can actually post my entry here now - It's my fist real major conversion so I'm proud

Lots of little alterations to one of the old dragon minis (repositioning hands, wings, tail & a few other things). Karl himself is constructed from the Mounted General OTE (which I cut in half & added the sash around the waist to make him taller) & Empire, Bretonnian, & even Space Wolf bits.
And some painted versions - They always look better painted (you can also see the tail better here)

I don´t even thought that guy is yours!
Very good job, like the conversion!!
-
excellent, you must try to do more major conversions. You will only get better and this is one heck of a starting point. Look forward to seeing much more. steveb
-
I soooo want that General figure.
-
A very impressive Emperor.
Where does his head come from ?
fbjorn
-
I don't particularly like the old dragon, but Karl looks really good.
-
Thanks for all the good feedback guys.
Steveb - Coming from the Conversion Comp winner, that's a big compliment. Thanks. :::cheers::: On the to-do list includes trying to create 2 plastic griffins (1 for war alter & 1 as a mount) - I'm thinking of using the lions from the High Elf Chariot but am stumped on how to get the eagles  - Anyone know where I can get some good plastic ones?
fbjorn - The head is from the Brettonian Knights kit. I think it gives a really regal look (I really aren't a fan of the feathered head KF mini)
Warlord - yep the new minis are definately better, but you work with what you've got. I scored the dragon in a huge trade I did for Forthelady - I think it turned out pretty good.
-
Nice job! I like the color of the wings, soft blue. Let me guess karls arm, the one that is pointing and that has the glove on is the space wolfs part.
-
Nice job! I like the color of the wings, soft blue. Let me guess karls arm, the one that is pointing and that has the glove on is the space wolfs part.
Nope my friend - close though.
The pointing arm is actually from the General OTE kit - The lance arm - I trimmed it up to remove all of the lance front & back and the greenstuffed the pointing finger on.
The other arm is the shouldered pistol arm from the same kit - i trimmed of the hand and to a poweraxe from the Space Wolves kit, cut it off at the hand and trimmed the poweraxe head off & attached the hammer head from the General OTE standard.
There are so many little conversions like that in it - Which I like as it really does make it one of a kind.
-
This army is going so amazingly well!
I wish I could paint horses as well as you, but your biggest achievement is undoubtedly that you got a unit of about fifty (insert oath hear)ing flagellants to rank up!
:eusa_clap:
P.S. I also think that the mixed uniform idea is going well, and a group shot of the painted models would be awesome.
P.P.S I liked the pistoliers the way they were, perched precariously on the sides of their saddles :icon_biggrin:
-
This army is going so amazingly well!
Cheers Marius :::cheers:::

:eusa_clap:
They rank up now - but I think I might need to put numbers under the bases to remember what order to put them in (it was a little like a jigsaw puzzle ).

Coming soon - almost finished the swords men which is the last unit I have built, so will update showing them and also an army shot :biggriin:.

That is a sweet looking conversion.

Sweet - all done with the swords men & arch lector:

well - that's the last of the minis I had built, so now need to build some more (won't go as crazy as last time!! :biggriin: Build a little, paint a little works better I think)

And - Here is what is now completed in total (all 3180 pts worth!)

I think the colours are working & the blue really helps to stop the army looking disjointed & just a big rabble.
Got a few minis to buld now & have ordered a whole bunch (4 boxes of militia, Bret Pegasus Knight, Box of Bret knights, 2 x boxes Chaos knights & a whole bunch of bitz). That'll keep me going for a while I think.
PS. for those of you keeping track - I'm just about to finish my second pot of Delvan Mud wash
-
Really, the only thing that I can say is "Wow"
You have managed to paint such a huge army so fast and so well, congratulations are in order.
:eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
And you are right, the blue does anchor the army together and makes it look like an army.
Now, it's time to base all those minis (good luck)
-
:icon_cry: Its just so beautiful. I'm sorry I just get so emotional sometimes.
-
WOW - it's been quite a long time since I was here on the forums (probably 6 months in fact :icon_redface:).
Well, got things sorted so I'm back to it now. First job is to update the links to my pics as they have shifted to a new server and most of them aren't showing :icon_confused: so will do that today.
Have completed (finally) a couple more units which I will photograph and add in the next few days.
NEW YEARS RESOLUTION: Update this regularly :-D
thanks for all the patience

OK - for some reason the system keeps erroring out when I try to update my old posts so here are the last pics of what I had gotten up to (if anyone wants to see any of the other pics not showing up now on earlier posts, let me know & I repost them too)

Weird - I can only post a couple of pics at a time without an error occurring. Think I better mention that to the team.

Helblaster Volley Gun from Riekland - you may notice on the gun carrige (and on others) that I replaced one of the levers/cranks with "battlefield repair" parts. Just so they are all just a little different.

So, that's where I'm up to...
I've got a pile of Militia, knights etc sitting there, but my wife bought me a Chaos Warriors spearhead box back in June for my birthday so think I will start creating some of the opposing force for this Empire army - 10,000pts vs 10,000pts (eventually) - and have a simple basing job to do for the empire minis plus a similar (but slightly more corrupt) version of the basing for the Chaos Warriors.
Till next time... :icon_biggrin:
-
:icon_eek:
I'm beyond words... Well done! :eusa_clap:
Question for you... What was your paint scheme on the Volley Guns? I'm hoping to give mine a bit of a more polished and pretty look to them...
:::cheers:::
-The General
-
Cheers for the compliment General.
For the volley guns I used Gun Metal for the barrels and Brazen Brass for the rest of the gun mechanisim. For the gun carriage i used scorched Brown for the main wood, graveyard earth for the wheel spokes and Tin Bitz for the metal parts. The entire thing was then coated with Delvan Mud wash.
I think Brazen Brass is actually discontinued now, so not sure if you can find something similar.
-
Would Burnished Gold mixed with a bit of Chaos Black be an effective substitute?
-The General
-
Very nice polishing on the machines indeed! Is your blue hawk turqouise?
-

Hmmm - that might work - Or maybe try Burnished gold with a bit of Scorched Brown
Very nice polishing on the machines indeed! Is your blue hawk turqouise?
cheer Obi. The "Army Blue" is Ice Blue (the delvan mud wash tones it down a little.). The Swordsmen unit uses some Hawk Turqouise (banner, shields & scabbards) as well as the Ice blue:
It is a little deeper than the ice blue.
-
Nice, thanks! I've been looking for a nice GW colour to use as light blue-> this one looks better than hawk IMO.
-
Glad I could be of assistance :icon_biggrin:

Very nice looking unit

And thanks for the advice on the painting!

very nice unit of Swords ........... :smile2:

Hi again - Chaos is upon us (we'll at least me).
Finished building most of the Warrior of Chaos spearhead box (saving the maruders till i have enough for a unit & don't want 2 of the special characters). An will hopefully get around to undercoating them today. Not too much special done to them - a couple of head and arm/weapon swaps here & there plus the 'shattered earth' texture for the basing. Eventually the empire bases will be a pretty basic gravel mix and these chaos will get the same treatment, except for the 'lava' in the cracked earth.
The entire Chaos army is devote to Khorne (gee... I wonder why I would like Khornite paint-jobs? :icon_lol:) so am making use of every 'Khorne style' head and weapon - every unit/character has the mark of Khone (if allowed by rules).
just a couple of pics of this stage - like I said, nothing too special (seeing as my wife bought them for me I thought I had better make use of the metal minis).
Exalted Hero on foot (arm/weapon swap)

Sorry, but your Chaos pics don't show up. I assume it's the Inquisition at work again.

Well better get painting - so I can get back to my Empire minis
-
Sorry, but your Chaos pics don't show up. I assume it's the Inquisition at work again.
lol  - I like it.
for some reason the system won't allow me to have more than 3 images per post, so put them up in bunches now.
-
Well, my Chaos Warhounds are complete (apart from the gravel basing of course).

Apologies to those of you who have seen all Empire units already, but seeing as most of the images aren't showing anymore I have taken some new pics (just full units, no detail shots):

Wow - didn't realise painting the Chaos Knights would take so long... only got 1 unit done so far:
They don't quite rank up properly, I will definitely need to pay more attention to that in the future. :icon_redface:

Yeah, they are some of the widest Cav models I have. I'm going to have to go back and readjust mine so they rank up better.
Nice work as well.
I'm not sure why you are having problems posting more than two pictures. That's never happened to me.
-
I so wish i could post more than 2 pics at once... if anyone knows why I can't please tell me.
I had a problem with that a few months back, and the weird thing was it was only in one particular thread so I assume it was some sort of random glitch. Don't know if you've tried putting pics elsewhere. I think my problem vanished of it's own accord a couple of days later too, so your powers may come back
Really like the chaos knights. I wouldn't want to face a charge from them!
-
Thanks for the comments guys - fingers crossed that posting issue does fix itself.
-
A truly beautiful army niner, I love how you keep your units BIG. That's the true empire style! Very cool conversions on the priests as well. Do you plan on having only priests as characters, or are these (simply) a beginning of your character cast? What do you plan on doing with the bases?
Keep this up! And thanks for showing.
-
Can't help but admire the painting even though I don't like the colour
-
Great looking army, ninerfan !
But what are the knights in red with all the skulls ?
A new knightly order ? :engel:

Thanks, and honest too, very nice.

I already have some other characters in the mix (almost every unit has a WP or other character in it). You can see my whole army list by clicking the link in the first post of this thread.
As far as the basing - well that's next months goal - finish the bases on all 169 minis!! (good luck to me :icon_biggrin:)
-
OK - I have actually done some painting recently, just been so busy with work. So here's a bunch of up dates.
Firstly, my second unit of Chaos Knights:

wheeeew! That was exhausting :biggriin:. One unit of Chaos chosen to paint then base all 169 minis - Then back to the Empire!! (with close to 100 Free Company waiting for me )
-
Cool conversion of the lords
-
Really coming along well with the painting. Congrats! :::cheers:::
Couldn't see the older pictures on this thread, yet looks like you reposted quite a few of your units, and they were good to see. :icon_cool:
-
Thanks guys.
Poet: yeah - my company switched domains so nothing showed up anymore & the system won't let me update the links to the images for some weird reason - ah well, you get that on the big jobs
-
use Imageshack

The work on the bases is good and well worth the effort, it sets the models apart. The metal looks quite flat and non-metalic on your models. A bit more shading or even adding some "chips" to the edge to simulate battle damage could really improve this in my opinion. Some of the models also seem to lack contrast and the parts seem to merge, try adding a few more neutral, organic tones to break this up. They are very cleanly painted though.

Thanks for the input - Will take it all on board. Still learning so think I'm happy with the clean painting bit, will start trying some more technical stuff on the next lot (no highlighting done at all so far on these models, just shading).

Well how about the clear highlights on the knight's banner? I personally think that it looks good so you are definately capable.[/font]
-

believe it or not - thats just a base colour with Scarab Red wash then a weak Badab Black wash. Haven't had the guts to try actually adding highlights to anything yet - some are just a side effect of using the washes for shading.
... but i'll take that as a compliment none the less
-
the shield of the bannerbearer looks quite weird
please remove it
the rest is as good as usual
