I have been playing Warhammer for about 15 years, with periods of intense activity (including tournament play), then a barren wilderness, and now I play about once a week within a small group. I have a number of armies, but have always rejected the Empire because of the number of figures involved, even though the flexibility of the army has always appealed. The 7th edition army list ticks virtually all the correct boxes for me, so I am finally taking the plunge with a project that has been in the back of my mind for a long time.
This army is an exercise in frugality and practicality. I want to collect the figures as cheaply as possible. I want to assemble them and paint them as quickly as possible. But I also want the finished army to look good.
I have chosen Ostland for two main reasons. My opponents are typically beasts and warriors of chaos, with occasional games against vampires and dark elves. The chaos incursions typically originate in the north, while the vast forests of Ostland are said to be heavily populated with beasts, so it seems appropriate. Mainly though it's the colours - I prefer the black and cream of Ostland to any of the other northern provinces. It should also help in the speed painting of the units.
Enough chatter, here's the first unit, a detachment of militia. These were a test to check out some colour combinations and to see if I would be happy with the end result of the simple technique. The figures were bought already assembled from ebay, I just cleaned them up and got on with the painting.

The method is just about the simplest possible. Spray black. Paint on the base colours (Foundation paints are good for this, as are coat d'arms if you can get them). Then wash with devlan mud. That's it. No additional shading, no highlighting. I can't think of a simpler method - maybe dipping would give a similar result.
Next up is another detachment, this one I have constructed myself, to give it a witch hunter theme. You can also see my cheap and cheerful movement tray, made from cereal box cardboard, adhesive magnetic paper, magnets and plastic sprues. Turn it upside down and nothing falls out.

OSTLAND! Welcome aboard! Always a pleasure to see someone with the true Empire spirit amidst these Averlanders and Stirlanders.
Nice job on the painted figures. Thanks for the movement tray idea as well, I'm always looking for ways to use those damn sprues.

Devlan Mud is awesome, I dont think I've found anything it can't do, I think i'm going to redecorate my house with it.

I'm not convinced that the first picture contains models that were base coated and washed. I'm going to have to see some WIP pics to believe it!

Cheers guys, more will definitely be coming. Yesterday I cleaned up part of my halberds regiment and today I received a huge load of the new plastics courtesy of ebay. Apart from knights, I now just about have everything I need in terms of raw materials, just gotta get em painted. One of my characters just has to be named Johann Devlan. :icon_cool:

Johann Devlan, yea you should go for that! Your devlan (what does that word mean by the way?) painting style :wink: makes me wonder why the hell I keep highlighting after washing. Can´t wait to see that second unit painted. I like the matt and realistic look.

By the way. I got inspired by that magnetic base thing. Where do you buy that kind of magnetic paper you are using and can you paint on top of it?

I love it! Great theme, nice execution. The painting is very neat and effective. The foundation+wash approach results in a realistic, drab (but not plain) look that fits your theme perfectly. I'll be watching this blog for sure!

Sorry guys, real life seems to be taking up too much of my time recently, first time I have checked the board for about a week. :icon_redface:
Some answers then. The magnetic strips I bought from a gaming show, it's used a lot by historical gamers. You can find similar on ebay. It's self adhesive - cut to size with scissors, peel off the backing and stick onto base/movement tray. Nice and easy. Good enough for plastics, but metal models are heavier and need a rare earth magnet glued to the underside of the base - again ebay is your first stop. You can't really paint over it, it loses gripping power if you do. Not a problem if you have the rare earth magnets on your bases, they are very powerful, but the adhesive stuff is less so. Important tip - buy a black or brown sheet, avoid the pink. :icon_biggrin:
The white is indeed dheneb stone. Gives a creamy white rather than a bluey white.
Next unit has been sprayed only, I would like to get it done this weekend but I have three packs of furniture to put together, so who knows who will prevail - Sigmar or Ikea!

Finally got the second detachment painted, after a couple of weekends of boring RL stuff (Mrs Thaumaturge seems to think that DIY tasks and shopping are more important than painting little toy soldiers - I will never understand the logic of the female mind :roll:). So here we have a witch hunter themed unit, the front rank being metal models, the rest plastics from various sets - militia and flagellents in the main.

As before, the painting was quick and easy, with a slight variation. I sprayed black, then drybrushed a dark brown and a mid brown. This gives a slightly more detailed suaface to work on, and has the added benefit of not having to paint belts, bags, pouches, etc (if you are fairly neat in applying the other base colours). So, on go these base colours, then the devlan wash, job done. I did put a couple of layers on the pages of the book, otherwise everything is one coat and a wash.
Here's Johan Devlan, wannabee priest and rabble rouser. He's a Westwind model, from the vampire hunters range I think - he's been sat in a drawer for about ten years. He was clutching a cross, I snipped off the top to make it a Sigmarite hammer. The cloak is chestnut washed with mud - a surprisingly nice and smooth finish.
