Title: New edition, new armies
Post by: Immovable Object on June 21, 2010, 11:02:15 AM
With the arrival of a new edition my mind always turns to starting a new army and this edition is no exception. I've got an unpainted Dark Elf battalion box upstairs so they're an obvious contender but Wood Elves are very tempting as well especially as I believe I'm right in thinking that 8th heralds the arrival of shooting in multiple ranks(?) Both armies obviously appeal to the painter in me as well. The other alternative is another Empire army.... What about everyone else? Is anybody planning a new army?

Nope, Empire all the way!

As for Wood Elves. We won't know for sure untill the armybook updates regarding 8th Ed. have been released by GW but right now they look royally shafted! With Skirmishers unable to remove ranks and the possibility of always getting attacked back (and thus suffer casualties among your Wardancers and such) are major problems for the WE.

I've decided to stick to my Empire. for now.

Treachery and greed has done a lot more for my army building than 8th ed. so far.

I'd love to do a TK army I think. They might get a new book soon, which would obviously provide me with fresh impetus.
Plus, Skeletons must be ridiculously easy to speed paint.

But almost every battle one or two will come apart, so maintenance is an issue with skellies...

I'm going to stick with Empire, and right now I'm hoping I'll be able to continue using most of my units. I'd hate completely rebuilding my army. But if Empire turns out to be no fun at all in the new edition, I might switch to Lizards or Dwarfs.

There are things that look good for WE's as well though. High iniative means they'll pretty much always strike first, even when charged so Im told. I haven't seen the rulebook yet but Im led to believe that the new edition is going to be more 'mission' based. If this is true then placement of terrain will be a real advantage for Wood Elves no? For instance, putting a forest on or infront of an objective will mean the opponent will have to bring the fight to you on terms much more favourable for WE's. Plus, Wood Elves look really cool.

Empire plays very similarly in 8th to the way it did in 7th. Everything that worked with Empire in 7th edition though, became much more effective in 8th. State troops hold the line better, warmachines kill things better, good magic protection is not as difficult to achieve. Captains on Pegasi got better with the single profile and armor boost. The only difference is that armies made up entirely of cavalry are no longer as easy to play with, even though, in my opinion, fast cavalry got a pretty big boost.

Dwarfs will get a nice mobility boost, that's for sure. You will actually be able to play them offensively now without a ton of crutches boosting their movement. And thunderers and quarrelers ranked up don't sound bad either. 20 with command deployed 2x10 for shooting can reform into a combat formation of 5x4 and be just as good as regular clan warriors.

IF, it doesn't really matter who strikes first if you get all your attacks back.

Does that mean you are attacked back before casualties are removed? As I said, I've not seen the new book...

No, but casualties are strictly removed from the back. So as long as enough models in the unit remain, you get full attacks back. From 2 ranks.

Oh, I see. Yeah, thats going to hurt! Especially against large/horde units.

I have a conundrum...

9000pts of Empire just asking to be painted and reorganized for 8th ed...
4000pts of Dark Elves asking to also be finished and reorganized and when I go to aus I'll be adding a futher 1500-2000pts more to this group (4 bolt throwers and 2 Hydras... YES PLEASE).
1 box of Bretonian knights asking for friends...

When I think of doing Bretonnia I go "well I've already got sooo much" when I think of doing delves I go "but Empire are my 1st true love" but when I think of Empire I go "no knights, all shooting makes ben go crazy" so I think of Bretonnians and around we go again...I need to see someone

I was going to make a Savage Orc army with 3 blocks of Savages with Choppa and Shield. That way they got a 5+ AS and 6+WS. Now they have lost armour save and gained nothing regarding the ward save.

And don't tell me 'Just take them with 2 choppas' because I have already done the converting...

If they already have a 6+ don't HW/Shield give them +1 to that ward so a 5+ward. Or will that only be for WOC with MoT?

Skirmishers never were able to...

I'll be (re)starting either Empire or Chaos. Likely Empire as my Chaos army has now gone down the drain thanks to the changes to cavalry.

Bies, the parry save doesn't stack wih other ward saves afaik.

On Topic: I won't start a new army! I will add to my empire if there is need. I will add to my orks if they turn out to be more playable than in 7th. I will paint my beastmen and finally play with them. I have a small Chaos warriors army 95% unpainted if i want to do something else. And i have to paint the skaven army for my wife!

No, i really do not need another army! And i hope the Starter box High elves don't look so good that i get tempted to start a HE army...

I will be "starting" one or more armies which I already have hidden in my closet but which never saw the tabletop earlier. I am looking at one or two Warriors of Chaos armies (one Khorne, one Nurgle) and Night Goblins. I may also re-paint my Tzeentch Daemons that I have not played since Storm of Chaos armylist and add unit or two to my Empire army.

10-wide unit is a Horde and may fight in one additional rank when not charging. That is, 3 ranks for all Empire infantry except for Spearmen, who fight in 4 ranks. Big bois such as Ogres and Trolls get Horde for being 6-wide.

Personally, I believe Horde is overrated as it benefits most the units that cannot afford to go 10-wide.

Bies, the parry save doesn't stack wih other ward saves afaik.

It does combine with Mark of Tzeentch (or to be more precise, MoT combines with Parry) but not other Ward saves.

I'm continuing as planned -- keep expanding my Empire & Skaven and keep trying to sell off all the Wood Elf stuff that I have but barely started.

Wood elves will be saved by errata! I hope...About the armour/shield thing. According to the GW guy I talked to last night, at the bunker, the combo of hw/shield still gives +1 AS as well as the 6+ ward save. And that is all ONLY if being attacked to the front. So...your Savage orcs still have some kind of advantage. Their ward save is still good for missile weapons and flankers.

Shield used with hand weapon gives +1 as, but not +2 as it used to. This means that Swordsmen' armour save is capped at 5+, the same as Spearmen' (Swordsmen still have defensive advantage over spearmen because of Ws4). Parry gives hw/shield a 6+ Ward save against infantry.

Hardly enough when they also only get a 6+ AS. 8pts is not quite enough IMO to justify. Might as well go two hand weapon  :-(

I'm not planning on another army, I already have around 5 armies, so another one will be overkill. Maybe just finishing one would be great

That's really too bad you already did the converting, though, honestly, I don't think they would have been any good with a 5+ AS in 7th. Personally, I would rather have had the extra choppa attack.

If they already have a 6+ don't HW/Shield give them +1 to that ward so a 5+ward. Or will that only be for WOC with MoT?

Yes, only WoC with Mark of Tzeentch ward save stacks with parry save. Stupidly.

No new armies here.

I've already got Empire well under way and won't be giving that up anytime soon, if ever.  I've got bits for O&G, and WoC as well, yet with or without 8th, I'd eventually grow these further.

Then there is the 40K Orks, and small numbers of Space Marines and Tau, along with 15mm WW2 Germans, 28mmm Napoleonics, and 28mm Romans that lll need some work.

New armies ... well even those outside of WFB would be happening with or without 8th edition.

I am still sitting in the holes to make the Athenian army but I will wait for the FAQ to decide if I should go High Elf or Lizardmen (right now the money is on lizards).

I'm still wondering about expanding my Bretonnian army or building a maurauder infantry army.

Go marauder they can squabble the whole time with a scottish accent with flails they are even quite solid I4 S5 as a horde from three ranks, they only hit this hard in the first combat round but that should be enough...the FAQ should be out on july 10th.

I think Orcs would suit you most though.

Though not starting a new army, I am giving my 6-year-old Empire forces a repainting that they have long been deserving.  Some forces only get touch-ups, but 15 Greatswords will soon be Carroburg and a regiment of Swordsmen will bear the colors of Bogenhafen.  Purchases will be focused on finishing out this force - things like that sixth Cannon, third Mortar, and maybe (finally) a brace of Rocket Batteries, as well as more militia for the detachments and some of the newer Warrior Priest models.

Selling my unpainted, in box Vampire Counts.  Selling my Beastmen.  Might get rid of the Dwarfs and Skaven as well.
Orcs, zombie pirates and Empire might get face lifts and tummy tucks.

No,

Warriors of chaos for me. Units of 35 marauders with MoT and LA and shield rock as a army centre, along with 18 warriors with halberds and shields with MoT, great in either offence or in defence. Have done about half the marauders 90 infantry and 20 cavalry so have made a good start.

Sorry.  500 pts of Empire was a typo.  I meant to say I was going to be adding 500 pts of Empire to my 1,500 pt Empire army to make it 2,000 pts.

As for Skaven and High Elves the reason I am starting them is because of the starter set rumor  :icon_razz:  Hoping that I can get them extremely cheap.   :icon_lol:

I'm thinking 3 blocks of 30 maurauders, each with a chariot at their side.
A small block of chaos warriors to support the Lord (for the leadership).
2 units of fast cavalry and 4 small packs of dogs.
And then some anti-magic stuff.
