Title: Grimblades
Post by: Captain Dob Van Dwi on November 03, 2010, 04:00:12 PM
Did anybody els read this book? I just finished it and loved it myself. Infact I might just modle them just for kicks.

So I have two things to ask:

#1: what were your likes.
I have to say that I liked the time inwich it took place. Good for a book.
Stg. Klarch was also a great protagnest.

#2: What were your dislikes
The only thing I realy hated was that two not electors held runfangs.
I also hated that the old halberdier was murdered by Keller.

 What did you guys think?

For a GW book, I would put it at average. Generally I think it is fine if you are just looking for your Warhammer novel to be the average Action Film with explosions, battle scenes, and the like but to me it really doesn't do well at immersing the reader in the Warhammer setting. Fluff support wise, the book offers very little knowledge we don't already know about the Empire. Even the much shorter and plot wise lamer Call to Arms offered a bit of a better look into Hochland's military.

Of the Empire Army series it is one of the better but honestly that is because much of the Empire Army Series is not the greatest. Then my preference is for works more in keeping with the WHFRP feel, something only a few of the Black Library novels attempt to do anymore.

Another note there is only one Runefang in book, the Dragon's Tooth of Reikland. The other sword is just another magic sword that the Captain happens to carry......most likely worth 50pts or less.

It was an ok read, the murderer essentially getting away with his crimes was pretty lame though.

I thought that the beginning was slow but I warmed to the book as it went on.  My favorite so far was Iron Company and Reiksguard would be next.

I liked Iron Company the best so far as well. I'd really like to see a novel focusing on Greatswords at some point.

The latest Gotrek and Felix novel gets into some good ol' Greatsword action, as its about the two main characters stuck in a castle with an Imperial Army, but it obviously does not focus on them.

I agree with SOF - the new Black Library Novels do not really immerse the readers well.  (of course, GW thinks of the definition of "setting" is "add more skulls").  I have not read Grimblades yet, but I have read Iron Company and Call to arms.

This maybe the history nerd coming out in me, but I cringe everytime they put Empire Swordsman in a Shield Wall...   The shields the 7th ed Troopers are more like oversized bucklers, not proper-sized shields.  When I hear "Shield Wall" I picture 10th Century Vikings, not 16th Century German swordsman spilling out from between static formation to cut off enemy pike heads and stab bellies...  (but hey, its fantasy)

The Gotrek and Felix novels do a wonderful job of providing that "Warhammer" feel to the books. They are always enjoyable.

So true, I love the Gotrek books! Very atmospheric if only for a Warhammer series.

I have never really liked anything outside those novels though.

Yup Going to have to say you are right on that one. 3 out of 5 for me. I still loved it though I am not a picky guy.

I would highly recommend NOT getting the new Warrior Priest book.  Biggest waste of my time.  I'm not going to give you a big review, but there was no fluff in it, poor dialog, stupid people and really boring.

Hummmmmm...... thats sad indeed from what I have read it seemed good to me. Or maybe I just don't care, after reading Storm of Iorn (40k Chaos book) the book would have to be realy bad to top that pice of shit. The thing was not even chaosy.
