Title: 8th Edition Boarder Patrol; New Rules?
Post by: WallyTWest on November 04, 2010, 02:19:44 PM
Turned on the Gas Heater in the garage today, and then pulled out the 4x4 tables for playing Warhammer patrols in November. Felt good, I have not been able to participate for 3 years while I was in Maine. Went online and printed off the articles and suddenly stopped... its become very outdated.

“RULES OF ENGAGEMENT”
Each player will need a Warhammer army that conforms to the special limitations below:
• You must choose an army of not more than 500 points.
• You must have a single Hero to lead the force, but the Hero may not be an Army Battle Standard Bearer.
• The army must consist of at least two units and no more than four units (excluding the Hero).
• You must have at least one Core choice.
• You may take one choice of either Special or Rare Units, but not both.
• You must include at least one infantry unit of 10+ models.
• No unit may be larger than 25 models.
• No unit may carry a magical standard.
• No single model may cost more than 125 points.
• An army may have no more than one chariot or war machine.

I was talking it over with a buddy today, we decided that some of the rules needed to be amended or changed for 8th edition in our gaming club.

Unit Selection
• The army must consist of at least two units and no more than four units (excluding the Hero).
• You must have at least one Core choice.
• No single model may cost more than 125 points.
• You may take one choice of either Special or Rare Units, but not both.

Warhammer has given up on the "slot" system, and shifting values to 25% and 50% would cap the value of special units and heroes at a certain level. (250 and 125 pts.) I would love to find a cleaver solution. I feel the cap on 4 units is right... even if the rule feels a bit crude.

Unit Size
• You must include at least one infantry unit of 10+ models.
• No unit may be larger than 25 models.

By its very nature, the second rule dis-allows hordes. Although I could see a goblin/skaven horde being quite abusive at this point level, I see no reason to dis-allow it. In fact it seems very warhammer-ie to me.

I was kind of wondering your thoughts... Have you guys encountered these rules in 8th. (Yea, I know the newer article exists... we just don't like it! K.I.S.S.)

Thoughts; Amended Thus
The Standard Barrier does not count for the first Hero.
Let the percentages and 125 point cap do the work on limiting the power of Heroes, Specials and Rares.
Limit of 4 units keeps games short and sweet.

It looks good, although I don't see the need for some of your changes.

I don't think the 25 models per unit cap should be removed. These rules are meant to represent small units of troops making patrols, not massive horde units. I think you should add it back. The Border Patrols aren't supposed to represent a normal game of Warhammer.

You have a note that the BSB doesn't count as the first hero, but it looks to me like you are still limiting it to one hero. I could be wrong.

Also I don't see the point in removing the limitation of no magical banners. The reason for it is that a commander isn't going to let a magical banner go out with a small partrol that stands a good chance of getting destroyed if they encounter any heavy resistance. A magical banner would be something to only be used in the real imporatant battles.

Yea, the more I read it the more I agree. I actually don't think composition needs to be adjusted at all. The original rules are good enough, I guess it shows the strength of the original article.

I should just say:

You can spend a maximum of 125pt on hero models.

No lords, because they would be to powerful at this level of game.
