Title: Tarnell's plog - Army complete :::cheers:::
Post by: Tarnell on January 18, 2013, 01:37:36 PM
Hey guys,

welcome to my army painting blog, on my return to the hobby I found this site and thought I'd join you all and keep this blog updated to help motivate me to complete my army.

I used to play 40k and Necromunder  back in the day as a kid for about 4 years but stopped roughly when I turned 14.
About 5 years ago I bought a wood elf army (7th Ed). My brother and I enjoyed painting and battling for about a year but then he moved away and it fizzled out.
He started the hobby again about 2 years ago and I couldn't resist starting again recently after flicking through a colleagues white dwarf.
I chose Empire as they have recently been updated and seem to offer a lot of versatility. Plus I always choose the goodies!
I have about 2500-3000 points of models recently bought to paint up as fast as possible as I'm itching to start gaming and learning the 8th Ed rules.

So here's what I've done so far, Check it out and feel free to comment.

p.s. the pics didn't come out as well as I hoped as they were just quickly taken on my iphone with only very poor snow assisted natural lighting but I will try and improve next time.

Tom.

I'll start with these 20 of my 40 Halberdiers, Smashed these out in a day and a half. They were pretty boring to be honest but I was really satisfied (and relieved) when I was finished.

The 1st of 2 canons. This was the 1st thing I painted in 5 years. Completed in 1 evening.

My first Character. I think the model looks good with the staff removed and on a raised based. But I was a bit disappointed with how this came out. I got a bit cocky and added lightning to the crystal ball and a red glow coming from it, on some of the cloak, the hands and the face. I felt it didnt really work so I had to paint back over it and it's left some areas lumpy. Also there's 2 joins on the back of the cloak which I attempted to smooth out using that new liquid green stuff, which unfortunately still showed up after about 4 coats. So I recommend saving your money on that stuff. Anyway, still reasonably pleased with the overall look of the model for gaming. But not the show piece I'd have liked. (completed in 1 evening).

These are my prized possessions so far. Apart from the white being a bit gloopy (not prepared to take hours and hours adding layer after layer of extremely watered down white, I'll just live with gloopy white). Was really pleased with how these came out. These were the second thing I painted and I took a whole weekend to complete them.

Steam tank and possibly more to follow this weekend as I don't think I'll be getting my rear wheel drive car off the drive in 6 inches of snow :)

When its said a day and a half for those halberdiers, are we talking like 12 hours?

Very nice, good strong colours and you seem to be able to keep a very respectable pace. Cant say I find the white very gloopy, possibly a little on the shields but overall not noticeable.

Thanks,

No, more like 18hrs. It would prob be a lot quicker if i base coated then used a wash like a lot of people seem to do now. But i like to pick out the shading myself, so I start with a dark base coat, Then the main layer, then the highlights. So takes a bit longer.

Ah thanks, Yea, I'm pleased with the colours. Should be nice and bright on the battlefield.
Ah ok cool, maybe i'm being a bit picky :).

Thanks, took a while deciding on the colours. A more burgundy plumb type red would have been nicer but pretty pleased with the colours.

Your figures are striking, clean, and very well done. White is not an easy color to pull off, but you have most masterfully.

Yo.
Pretty much completed my steam tank at the weekend but just made some finishing touches so here it is:
I went for a used look, apart from a fresh lick of paint on the main plating to match the Demigryph Knights.

My next task is a unit of knigts. Just waiting on some white wolf sprues to arrive as I need the great weapons for them.
Ended up shelling out £22 for 4 great weapons. Ouch!
May paint up the horses while I wait though.
Can't decide to do the barding on the horse straight steel to save time. Or go with dark turquoise and gold the same as the Demigryphs. Thoughts?

Yea, I should do really. Takes a while because the base coat is a mix of 2 turquoises.
I've been checking out your blog. The source lighting is really well done and the idea for the cannon is brilliant!
Not really familiar with any warhammer fluff though so not sure what morr is?

Morr is the god of death so opposed to anything to do with vampires/undead etc, anyway back to your stuff as this is your blog. Look forward to seeing what your knights look like

They're pre made resin bases from a site I found called http://www.tinyworlds.co.uk
I also got some resin movement trays, including pre cut sticky back magnetic sheet, and some magnets.
Really impressed with their quality and service, very much recommended.

im finally starting my 1st unit,  but my minis don't have this awesomness so i'm not sure they deserve goodies :D
hopefully i get back ot it tonight and post the knights pics :D

Can't wait to see more of ur army displayed here, its kicking a$$ so far,~
Will you give us priests and witch hunters? :D
what about knights?

Extra effort on the bases enhance any model imo. In the past I didn,t pay much attention the the bases but looking back it was a mistake. I may add some details to the bases once the army is complete such as rock, discarded weapons etc.

Look foreword to checking out your knights!

My next unit is knights, accompanied by a mounted WP (luthor huss model.

Other characters to come:
WP on foot in halberdiers
1 or 2 engineers
2nd Wizard (lore of metal as my main foe is WOC)
1 BSB on foot and 1 mounted so I have options.

Haven't got enough points for a witch hunter but I imagine I will paint one up once my 1st army list is complete.

About to spray and start painting this unit of White Wolves tonight.
For gaming purposes I wanted my knights to have great weapons and at the same time I was trying to pick a province that my army fitted into and Middenheim was the closest match. I know, its blue and white, not turquoise and white, but I'm justifying it by saying this particular warband chose a slightly green shade of blue as they're task is to patrol Drakwald forest and require extra camouflage (I've been reading the army book).

Progress is slowly being made. I thought I'd have the unit complete by now but it's taking longer than I anticipated. Got the Horses done, and they are ready to be ridden/sold to Tesco for burgers. The colours aren't very White Wolfy but Match my army nicely. The colours are a lot more bleached out than in real life and detail lost but I'll take better pictures when the unit's complete.

I did think this while constructing them but you only get 8 torsos for 8 knights and sadly they seem to have ended up in the front rank. Oh well, hopefully no one will be nit picky enough to notice or mention it.

That is most likely because the cloak obscures the back where it says '...was Ulric's homeboy'......

Halfway through my mounted BSB. The bottom half is complete so thought I'd give you a preview. This is the first finecast model I've painted and was really impressed by the quality of the cast (compared to the 2 abysmal Warrior priests I had the misfortune of purchasing) and have enjoyed painting it so far.

Roughly halfway through, So here's a halfway group shot. Took me roughly a month and a half so far so I'm hoping the army will be complete by the end of March ready to game with! After that I can add some optional units/characters etc. Should have pictures of the complete BSB and another 20 halberdiers by the end of the week.

Excuse the poor panoramic phone pic, but it does the job.

Finally finished this model. It's easily the nicest model in my army so I put 100% into it. It took a lot longer than I thought. Completed the horse and character pretty quick but the banner took me 3 different sittings. I took ages deciding what would get painted what colour, and I'm pretty pleased with the results. Another 20 halberdiers next. What an anti climax :).

P.s. The white on the banner is a bit bleached out in the photo. There's bit of shading going on that you cant see.

Did you have to highlight the Putti's ass so much? I'm scrolling down and bamm! Baby ass jumps out at me! I guess you are the one that will be looking at it most as your BSB will be facing your enemy!

I'm really liking the color choice you have here and the highlighting is just great. Keep it up.

That does look incredibly good. That combination of blue, white and red work really well.  I particulalrly love the way the banner looks almost ghostly - i know you said the photo doesnt show some shading you did but maybe its given it that cool effect instead - who knows?. Youve also highlighted everything like a pro which i find so satisfying to the eye.

If i could critique one thing it'd be that the sword seems rather plain by comparison to all your other brilliant detailed work. To me it seems one of those areas where a contrasting colour would make it stand out really well. (Is that what a spot colour is? i should know but dont).

Good luck on the halbardiers next - i shall keep close watch on this thread in future.

nice looking force so far. Your consistency of color certainly unifies them well. Not a color I'd probably have picked myself, but that makes it all the more pleasing to see that it works. Its always nice to learn how someone else might approach something.  The teal looks particularly nice in the steam tank plates, and the barding on the knights and griffons.  The knights' flesh tones are really well done. Some good broody and rich faces in there.

Very nice and solid work overall. ... looking forward to seeing it all fleshed out. :)

Play on words -
thanks for the kind words. I agree about the sword. I had 3 different attempts at painting it but didn't like the results so scraped the paint off but the sword was taking a battering so I went with something simple in the end.

The_Inquisitor -
Sure:
Black undercoat
Balthasar gold basecoat
Auric armour gold layer/highlights
Runefang steel fine highlights. (Golden griffon dry would be better)
Agrax Earthshade wash. Shades and also dulls it a bit.

Pistolpadds-
You get 2 great weapons in the knights box. I got another 3 from eBay and another 1 from a bits website. They were little really that last 4 I could find for sale on the Internet and cost me £22 in total but I didn't want to use a mish mash of different weapons. GW should really include 1 great weapon per knight in my opinion as its a common set up I see in army lists. They really should have made new knights with the last release.

cjp-
Thanks! I always try and come up with an original colour scheme I haven't seen before, variety's the spice of life as they say. Lots of interesting armies on this forum, especially yours.
Thanks, bugmans glow base paint has improved my flesh painting by a lot.

I can't remember the exact names of the new citadel paints, but:

Dark metal
Black wash
Light metal highlights
Flesh wash

Takes a bit of shine off/makes it look worn.

Looks really good - although his coat doesnt have the more vibrant blue tones that the helblaster crew have (which i liked a lot btw - i gotta get me one of those powder monkeys - they are just too cool!). Maybe the engineer gets more soot on him than regular crewman though.

The handgunners didn't make the list I'm afraid. At 9pts each they're a bit pricey for 24" range move or fire. If I did ever use them I think I'd swap the handguns for xbows for the extra range. Now I feel silly putting 2 packs worth of xbows in the bin :'(

Still to come though: 15 knights with lances (the white wolves didn't make the list either), BSB on foot, Warrior priest, Captain on Pegasus, and a War Altar.

Yea sure, I started with this:
Base: incubi darkness
Layer 1: incubi darkness + sotek green mix
Layer 2: sotek green
Highlight: temple guard blue

Then I started using this as it was a lot quicker but had similar results:
Base: sotek green
Wash: nuln oil (black)
Layer: sotek green
Highlight: temple guard blue

Hope this helps

I wanted to differentiate him from the normal crew so it's meant to be a dark leather coat. I was going to keep it black but I thought I'd give it a hint of turquoise to tie it in.

Caught the Warhammer bug again (how did i lose it?), and I'm making a push to finish painting a 2500 point list and then I can paint other units at a steady pace for further options afterwords.

The handgunners I assembled sadly didn't make the list as 24" move or fire for 9 points isn't worth it imo. Will use bases and unit fillers for archers later down the line though.

First off I re painted the turquoise on the Engineer to match the Hellblaster crew based on feedback.

It's a long-standing insider joke, Tarnell - unfortunately, like all insider jokes it is both incomprehensible to those outside and not all that funny when explained. The joke is simply that people use a Bretonnian Pegasus for Empire armies, that this is the only practical choice, but that people never acknowledge this and act as if the Bretonnian Pegasus is both innovative and has never been suggested before.

All that turquoise is really eye-catching and ties the army together nicely.  :eusa_clap:

I might have said this before, but the turquoise and red is absolutely fantastic.

Thanks guys. The last think to paint in my current list is the war altar. Hoping to have it finished in the next week or 2.

I don't care much for demigryphs (I mean, come on. What are they? Horses? Gryphons? Make up your mind, Empire!) but the paint scheme on both them and the knights is amazing!

I just thought they were meant to be 7 legged chickens. They are a bit silly but they're affective in game and give the army a more fantasy feel which I like. I actually regret choosing puny humans in a game full of more interesting armies such as orcs elves and demons. Blasphemy to post that here though I know

The force is looking really good. As others have noted, the colour scheme is both original and really eye catching at the same time; very pleasing to the eye.

As an aside i have no problem with the concept of demigryphs in the warhammer world. Many a creature we know of there is a hybrid of two or more other creaures. Griffons (Lion/Eagle), Manticores (bat/lion/human), Chimera (lion/snake/goat), and many others. Hell, even entire warhammer races are hybrids: skaven are humanoid rats, beastman are humanoid wildebeasts. Why then should demigryphs be singled out as having no place in the warhammer world?

And yes, on this warhammer empire site i wouldnt say the phrase "...I regret choosing puny humans in a game full of more interesting armies...". Definite blasphemy  :icon_biggrin:

Thanks for the kind words mate.

I do like my empire really. I think it's just a case of shiny syndrome where I want to buy every new release but I don't think I would have the patience to build and paint a second warhammer army.

After this stint over the last month I now have a tournament ready 2750 points. I'll add to it over time when I want to change the list about, probably some pistoleers, archers and more. But here's what I have atm.

This is the last thing I'm posting for my army for a while. It's heading to some tournaments this year which should be fun. My next project is Infinity as it seems a good contrast in terms of setting and gameplay to WFB. If I ever get a real camera I'll attempt to take some proper pictures. Thanks for the motivation for getting this army completed.  :::cheers:::
