Greetings all,
I have been reading this forum for a while and decided to take the plunge and add my attempt at building a Middenheim themed army. I needed a new burst of motivation and thought i'd give writing an army/painting blog a try, nothing like bouncing ideas around and comments with fellow enthusiasts.
Its only my second army after "finishing" a Greenskin Army. I chose to theme it upon Middenheim as the fluff allows a bit of moding and kit bashing opportunities that should make the army stand out a bit on the table, or atleast attempt to stand out.
Anyway onto some pics of what has been finished so far;
Detachment of Halberdiers

Hunters (Markus Wulfhart is still a work in progress)
The one area that I will be tweaking is the faces, still trying to get to grips not paining everything green :-P
And now for the start of some heavier kit bashing. I personally, and this is just my opinion do not really like the Demigryph models. They strike me as being on a parade ground not in the middle of a battle. As such one of the barriers to starting an Empire army was for me to find a way around this and found it in the Middenheim fluff. I decided to reincarnate my version of the Winterwolves of Middenheim in the following way:
The models are based on the 40K Space Wolves Thunderwold Cavalry, the riders are from the Demigryph set and the hammers are from Space wolf terminators if I remember correctly.
After completing the models I decided a block of 6 would be better, but I did not want two of the same ranks and decided to build the following (still a work in progress)
The 4 Wolves on the side are obviously 40K Fenrisian Wolves, the main character is a bit bash between Canis Wolfborn (removed his legs and all 40K bits), Demigryph knight legs transplanted onto the model with the sword arm and the other pointing arm comes from a High Elf White Lions of Charce Champion. Will update as it nears completion.
For the rest I find the Great Cannon a bit on the small side. As such I dug in my bitz box as I did a kit bash to make a beefy Orc Boar chariot by adapting an Ogre Kingdoms Ironblaster. As such the Cannon was still left untouchedand and begged to be used especially since the marks on it clearly show it was at one point an Empire cannon. As the fluff states that the Empire when in dire need will use battlement guns in battle I imagined my Great Cannon being removed from the city walls to join the army on campaign and came up with this (Again work in progress):
"I think he needs a bigger packing tool for the cannon though "
Anyway let me know what you think so far, still a lot of work to do before finishing the army.

Looking really good - those Wolfgryphs look splendid.
-
I'm a bit disappointed you decided to scrape off the detail on the ogre cannon. I found those details were what really brought this cannon to life.
great start on your army though, and some nice big wolfs
-
:::cheers::: very nice sir
-
So many great things in this log! The giant wolves are awesome, the cannon is really cool and the handgunner detachment looks great. Well done Sir!
-
As someone who has recently got some thunder wolves to do the same thing - thanks for the inspiration!
A great start to the army

Thanks for the comments so far.

I agree, at the time I started this conversion I was planning on removing the Ogre markings and keeping the rest, but it soon became clear that skill levels and equipment were not at the level that would satisfy me. So I changed tack and covered it up, it is still a work in progress and my Empire Bitz Box is filling up nicely and I will be adding things to the cannon to make it stand out in its own right, well in my head atleast lets see whether my hands can match my imagination... :icon_rolleyes:

The Thunder Wolves are great fun to convert, the Space Wolves sprues give a lot of bitz you can use in Fantasy conversions with a little adjusting, and they are comically oversized which I think add to the flare of the models. Anyway have fun with the conversion.
-
Some really cool stuff you got there, thanks for sharing! I especially like the Giant Wolves and the cannon there we are talking about a GREAT cannon. Keep up the good work!
-
Great looking Winter Wolves! I've got two sets of Demigryph Knights and Space Wolf Thunderwolf Cavalry waiting to be kit-bashed. Your pics and progress on the matter really inspires. Great work mate, thanks for sharing :D

Great to have you on here!
Its always good to have another Middenheimer join our ranks. For Ulric!
The Forgeworld handgunners look great and I like what you did with the cannon. Makes sense to me that Middenheimers would prefer a bigger cannon with more 'boom' than the puny cannons those 'Southlanders' use.
The conversion you did with the Thunderwolves is one that we have seen very often (on this forum as well as in general) now, but I like how everybody's version is slightly different and even though everybody uses the same base models it's easy to put your own spin on it.
It's definitely a conversion I'll be posting myself when I get my own blog up and running on here.
I wish you the best of luck with your army and continue to keep us updated

I really like how those hunters are looking!
The cannon is going to be impressive. I really like the size of it.

Hello All,
Thanks for the comments.
Its been quiet at the old paint station the last few days as I was away for work.
As the unfinished projects mount on my desk (the Cannon and Wolfhart have not advanced one bit). I have some new ideas for my Greatswords and Knights but managed to stop myself starting another project prior to finishing my back log.
First of all the second rank of DemiWolves is 2/3 done. I guess you could call them fillers but I like them in their own right. Here they are and a pic of the entire second rank with the primary DemiWolf in primer:
Also started to work on my S-Tank, this is the first and last picture of the interior of the Stank.
The rear is in a rough base coat, messing about with colours to see what I am going to do. Still playing around with it.
Gonna keep working on the Stank, there are a few mods im adding and changing the Empire Stank into a Middenheim Stank
For the more astute of you the rear wheels are from the Great Cannon set as my version of the Greatcannon looked silly with the original wheels, so I used the rear wheels of the Stank kit for that and had to use the smaller cannon wheels on the Stank, life is all about compromises :-P
All comments welcome as usual.

Cheers for that, I'm really pleased its encouraging you and hopefully gives you food for thought and new ideas, in any case enjoy the bit bash there are so many ways to personalise it.

Cheers for the welcome, I finished the front rank of DemiWolves about a year ago, been to busy with work to get the rest of the army together. I have more time on my hands now and with the encouragement and pressure from this blog I'm hoping to push through. I used to live in Amsterdam and the GW there is a great place to come up with new ideas. In Dubai now and need a new channel to bounce ideas off and receive critique. Anyway will keep you updated on my progress.

can't wait for your winter steamtank.

Evening all,
Its been tough finding time to paint the last few days but I am happy to report progress has been booked. Finished the DemiWolves. You can see the front rank earlier in this painting blog and now I have finished the second rank;

Still working on the Stank and Markus, both are about 2/3 done. Hope to finish them tomorrow and then on to a block of 40 Swordmen me thinks...or canon...or General...or knights...or mortar...or... ahhhh too much to do.... :icon_eek: :icon_eek:

Haha, Nicolas as far as I am concerned any ideas that I have and post about can be copied by anyone. It seems the perfect measure of doing something well if other people start to build along the same lines, and as far as I can tell there is no trademark on my pics
Anyway comments as always welcome and hope to have an update tomorrow with the Stank.

the wolves look really good, colour scheme etc, but they are missing the depth that a wash brings,
it's like you have stopped at base coat stage,
if it was me, i would be getting a big brush and washing all over with brown and blue several layers,
then on to highlights
good work all the same

Thanks Chumley for the honest critic. The pictures dont really show how they were painted, the white balance has overexposed a bit I think and hides a bit of the detail.
They are actually based in white, then I take a very light grey and water it down heavily so that the previous colour still comes through on the raised areas when applied to the model and then work my way up to black. Its almost reverse highlighting. Obviously flat areas come out in a relatively flat colour. The pictures I admit do not show this at all, I checked the model and it looks much softer blending in real life. I experimented a bit with washes but they are too heavy handed even when watered down, especially on the white it makes it very dirty very quickly and I wanted to be crisp not weathered.
Regarding washes I am bumping more and more often with washes leaving an unwanted high gloss finish when its dry leaving me the choice of redoing the effected area in base colors or trying to soften the effect. It seems to happen most with the Citadel brown and blue washes. What am I doing wrong? Is it that I am using a too much wash in one go or is it the fact that it is drying to quickly/slowly? Any advice much appreciated.
In other news, Stank main body is almost done, need to start the turret and then I will post some pics.

I can only give you my technique,
wash brown 50% + water 50% mix,
then dry on a heater!
then wash brown + red or brown + blue, again watery, then heater,
final targetted washes at darkest areas may use black and blue,
then i purity seal for the matt finish
then highlighting
-
It is the Purity Seal / Dulcote / other varnish stage which is vital. Various techniques with various paints lead to a variety of textures and finishes on a model; a coat of something flat and clear harmonizes all that (as well as protecting the models).
-
Unless you have a lot of metal models you tend to move around, stay away from varnish.
It kills colors.
-
Unless you have a lot of models you tend to move around
Gunlines are so outdated! :)
-
I purity seal after washes ,
it stops your hands rubbing the paint off the model,
then i go for highlighting,
so a spray is not my final stage, it's half way point effectively
no colours depth is thus lost really
-
Welcome to the forums, very nice work. I especially like the demiwolf 'swarms' you made, I might have to attempt that myself....
Your painting is excellent, and I look forward to more.
-
First of all thanks for all the tips and comments, gonna try and keep content filtering at a reasonable rate, got a bunch of conversions stuck in my head that I need to start working on.
I will try the Purit seal in the future to see how it goes. Been reading up on it a bit on forums and it seems people have had problems with it so I might try it on some filler units to see how it goes before covering the characters and ending with a milky mess to lead the army.
I pretty much finished the Stank, well atleast I think its pretty much done. Still need to finish the Engineer and the Hochland rifle and the base but the main body is done. I wanted a well used but taken care off paint scheme, not parade ground material, might add some battle damage in the future but still on the fence on whether this is a good idea or not. Might still do some touch ups or fiddle with some highlights but this is the general idea of my version of a Middenheim steamtank:
Oddly enough its my first try and freehanding Purity scrolls, reasonably happy with result, might redo it when I get better with practice. For the rest I am far from a master sculpter  but the blending of the wolf into the tank body worked our reasonably well, once again might need to revisit in the future.
Anyway will be very interested in what you guys think of my mini-conversion
-
Looks really good to me - very nice indeed. Might suggest dulling down the spokes of the rear wheels - they are very bright indeed. Maybe just a simple wash of brown or mud or gray.
-
Looking good - especially the wolf bowsprit (which I'm considering stealing).
-
Its been quiet at the paint station as I just got back after being called out to go on a 5 day work trip.
Needless to say painting wise nothing has happened. On the plus side I was in Australia and managed to swing by the local GW to work on some more ideas that have been spinning through my. The topic in mind was Magicians for the army. Also managed to score some GW Water Effect that I needed for the DemiWolf bases as GW is currently out of stock in most stores and online as according to rumour their Chinese supplier went bankrupt.

Looking into it, again the camera makes it look brighter than it is but indeed it is a bit on the "Crisp" side compared to the rest of the model, thanks for pointing it out. The more I let the model settle the more ideas come up to tweak the paint scheme a bit and add a bit more detail.
Looking good - especially the wolf bowsprit (which I'm considering stealing).
Steal away and let me know how your version worked out for you :smile2:
Anyway, hope to hit the ground running the next few days and get some pics to update the progress.

Greetings All,
Nice looking Stank! :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap: :eusa_clap:
Cheers Ol Perfesser.
The paints have been put away to make some room for the green stuff and modeling knife (bandaids included) as I decided to hit the Wizards section. Varying degrees of bit bashing, still unpainted as I am still fiddling with adding and sanding details. Just thought I would use you guys to bounce ideas off and get some ideas on what to do.
On to the pics to get the ball rolling:
First off all my bit bash to make a Beast Lore Wizard:
Quite happy how he is turning out so far, always fun bashing 3 kits together to make one model.
Next is my take on the Shadow Lore:
This one has had little bashing, things I am thinking of changing is the hand holding the jar so that the fingers rap around. Any other ideas more than welcome. Not sure what to do with the staff though, Ideas?
On to Fire:
This one is kind of out there. Here is my theory, first of all giving him a left arm , then when I get around to painting him make the cloak look as though its on fire, sort of as if he is casting a spell. Might adjust where his head is in regards to the rest of the cloak I am not sure how succesfull this will be, might need to change his lore if it does not work out.
I am stuck on the next one for the time being, Metal Lore:
With this one I am gonna keep removing the Chaos symbols but here is the question, what should I use to model the Metal Lore on his staff? Again any other ideas to make the model stand out.
The title in this post says it all "Work in Progress", 4 started, 4 to go :eusa_wall:. Looking forward to your comments and ideas..

The Beasts Wizard looks great (they all look great), but I can't identify the 3 kits you've used. I recognise the Flagellant head (and legs?), but where's the patchwork cloak from?

The upper torso, arms, cloak and staff come from the Beastmen Great Bray Shaman. The top of the staff comes from the 40K Space Marines Njal Stormcaller.

The legs and head are indeed from the Flaggelants set.

I really like the way you combined the thunder wolfs together with the fenrisian wolves. Just the mix between them created a strong image as a wolf pack. You design with the thunder/fenrisian wolfs have inspired me and I consider doing something similiar one day.
Keep up the good work and may Ulric protect us.

That's great -- I would never have thought of mixing those legs and that torso! Really like the wolf pack demigryph unit too...can't wait to see more.

Wicked inventive mix of bits, the Beast lore is my favourite so far, thanks :)

Greetings all,
First of all apologies for the slow updates, progress is being booked just a wee bit slower than hoped.
Secondly thanks for all of the feedback, much appreciated and used.
Thirdly the updates:
Stank is complete unless I decide to change it up a bit in the future now that the engineer and rifle have been added :-D;
Good news, Markus Wulfhart has decided to join the party! He is bog standard just painted with the now well known Blue and White of Middenheim;
And after the positive feedback I finished the Beast Lore Wizard, actually waited with updates untill I got him done;
Having a bit of problems getting the lighting right for the picture so I will be posting an improved picture of him once I get around to him. For the rest the other Lores are awaiting paint and building from there not to sure where I am headed off to, maybe a nice block of state troops.
As always comments more than welcome.

Some excellent additions. I particularly like the skintone you've got on Herr Wulfhart

Greetings All,
In a spurt of energy and two all nighters I have managed to get another 3 wizards done. Death, Metal and Shadow are done (almost sounds like a new Rock band ).
Not much modding here except the odd head and arms mainly because I just liked the models as is.
Anyway onto the pics:
Death Wiz;
No prizes who the model is, only changed the head and dropped the vampire neck piece. I was really considering using the scythe from the empire wizard set but finally decided to keep it as is. The paint scheme had me stumped for a while and I settled on the red and black which is not really in line with the rest of the army but thats not what the wizards are about :icon_lol:
Metal Wiz;
Again a pretty bog standard bash just changing head and the top of the staff, and ohh yeah a manicure to shorten his fingers a wee bit :icon_redface:. Messed about with the cloak a bit, it was first white with a layer of blue glaze over the top but was not overly happy with the result. Settled on a grey cloak, my first attempt at wet blending with mixed results so finished it off with standard highlighting.
Shadow Wiz;
Well this one is really bog standard as I simply liked the model. Spent a while starring at the top of the staff to try and think of something "original". Was about to settle for the standard top but then decided to fix another model with green stuff when it dawned on me to make a sort of mystic flame at the top and added a few skulls to add to the theme. The main modification it the basing, kind of obvious in the pics . All part of attempting to make it look like she is in the middle of a spell. Not sure about the eyes as yet, look better when not supper zoomed in as in pics :-D but they need a touch up me think as well as adjusting the colour a bit.
Anyway onto the group foto, SMILE :
Four down and four to go. Got two modelled just need to think of what to do with the other two. Might take a break from the wizards and do a block of some infantry or something. As usual please leave you thoughts on what you think and any ideas.
Cheers

Hello All,
Its been a while since I've updated progress. The reason is quite simple, holidays and busy at work. But I have made some headway. I completed a Heavens wizard and finally managed to get all the pieces in place and painted for the Great Cannon.
Anyway onto the pics:
Had fun bit bashing this one together, quite happy with the result, was m first attempt ever at doing a "non Metalic 'power' sword" design..
And now for one that I have been working on in my head and in real life for a while. I am so happy I have finally managed to finish this one. I posted a WIP pic earlier on but now it is done and based. Here we go:

I decided to model it as a gun emplacement with gabions. Then I decided to slaughter all the wooden parts of my unpainted fence set and build a sort of viewing platform to put the engineer on as a lookout. I kept the colour scheme as the rest but decided to give them black jackets to symbolise the crew as having received training in Nuln and now being dispatched to Midenheim.
Anyway please let me know what you think. Its good to be back and able to show some advancement. I think I'm gonna get m head around knights now, maybe some other elements while I ponder on how to get them more intimidating than the standerd set....hmmmm...lots of ideas.
Anyway
Greetz

That cannon is fantastic! The idea of putting an engineer on a viewing platform is excellent, the whole model works really well.
Also, I really like your beasts wizard. Perfect kit bash!

Thanks, I really enjoyed building the cannon set up. The viewing platform suddenly popped into my head and I have to say it came together better than I thought it would.

Nice Cannon! I used the same model for a conversion some time ago... Regular Cannon seem too small now...
-
Goede Avond Boreas,
Yeah I just recently noticed your beautiful conversion of the cannon and totally agree that the standard cannon is just too small for my liking. This is a case of bigger is definetly better :biggriin:
-
Gij zijt een Hollander? Zin in een potje?
In the Empire, size does matter...

Ik ben zeker een Hollander maar potje wordt lastig aangezien ik Dubai woon momenteel :closed-eyes:
Size is the whole reason why I'm strugling with the my Knights. The standard kit the horses I find to be ponnies, the riders are anorexic and they look like armored handy men as standard White Wolves. I'm currently on version 3 of my White Wolves in a quest to beef them up and make them look like the tough Knights they are supposed to be....

Cease die spreken de Hollish!

The standard kit the horses I find to be ponnies, the riders are anorexic and they look like armored handy men as standard White Wolves. I'm currently on version 3 of my White Wolves in a quest to beef them up and make them look like the tough Knights they are supposed to be....
Try using pistolier hourses and legs. The horse aren't armoured, but they are the right size.

Hahah Baluc, that was version 2. Dismembered the standard horses to salvage some of the armor and was in the process of Greensstuffing some of the armor but then found the knights too small.... I know being very picky on this one, found a way to beef up the knights but this made them too big for the horses so now i'm on version 3 which is currently a WIP and involves beefing up the horses (better stop this vicious circle soon before I end up with a real life sized pony in my living room) and is partially waiting on the postman to drop of some parts I ordered, snailmail sucks :eusa_wall: when you are waiting on a delivery...
Waiting to advance a bit further and i'll post some pics. Might start painting something else if my conversion stalls.

If anybody wants to build there own gabions (the baskets filled with earth) I found a great tutorial on how to do it yourself and cheaply. Quick trip to your local DYI shop should do the trick as in regards to buying the raw materials if you don't have most of it laying around the house.
http://paulsbods.blogspot.ae/2010/12/gabions-and-wattle-fences.html (http://paulsbods.blogspot.ae/2010/12/gabions-and-wattle-fences.html)
Great thing is that you can scale them to whatever size you need. Also has example of how to build a wattle fence using the same technique.
As to updates on progress in regards to on going projects, I have just finished priming my knights and hope to get the front rank painted and pictured in the coming days. Built a unit filler for the still to come swordsmen unit and should post a pic today or tomorrow. On top of this I primed my version of a witch hunter and should finish this soon as well.

A quick upload of some pics for the unit filler I made for a group of up and coming swordsmen.
Saw this model in one of the GW stores and wondered what if I change it around a bit and build up a bit of scenery it might work as a unit filler. This is the end result;

Not sure if I will ever really use it, but as we say in Dutch "Niet geschoten is altijd mis." (also known in English as A shot not taken is always a miss) I though I'd give it a try. Acknowleged he is not the most "Empire" styled model but as far as a battle weary captain pondering strategy in a group of soldiers he should be all right.
Let me know what ya think.

I really like it, if I didn't know it was Ursarkar Creed from 40k, I'd never know it wasn't a Fantasy miniature.

Its been a while since my last update but I finally made a lot of headway on my knights. Finished the back rank of 5 and modelled and primed the front rank. Decided to start at the back to see how the paint scheme would work out so i can adjust for the front.
I went through three version of the knights before I was finally happy with the model. Started of bog standard out of the box, then version two was based on modified Pistolier horses to finally settle on the Chaos knight set with a lot more modding.
Here is a pic of the evolution of my Knights of the White Wolf:
The first as many posts have discussed I just find silly, my second mod horse was much more to my taste but then the knight and his weaponry looked like a Handy man lost in battle, so finally settled on the tried and tested Middenheim manner of bigger is better :smile2:
Anyway the horses need to be big to match Wolfgarts horses when Sigmar was allive when the Knight of the White Wolf were Sigmars main hard hitting force.
Here are some pics of the 5 completed knghts ranked up:

It was hard work getting all the Chaos symbols off the models and then start building them up to get them looking Empire'ish. Bits are from several different Empire sets as well as left over bitz from building my DemiWolf unit.
Comments are more than welcome as usual, next up is the Witch Hunter and the front rank of the knights. Hopefully progress will keep up this time, well here's hoping anyway.

Good job on the knights. They look absolutely brutal.
I'm doing the same to make Inner Circle Knights of the White Wolf.

Great job there MiddenheimGeneral! As you understand I love that bulkiness you get from the Chaos Knights, especially when doing IC Knights. And you have done a great job with them! Looking forward seeing the full finished unit.

Those knights look like they won't be taking shit from anyone..
Also, I love your general-unitfiller. Maybe you could expand and have a whole command crew in it, like a war council maybe?

A lot of cutting and scrapping but all in all well worth the effort you put in to move them back into the light of Sigmar and Ulric and away from the Chaos wastes

Cheers Space, as the three editions show it was a race of buff size of horse then rider then horse then rider. I had purchased the Chaos knight set for the riders but then saw your post on the Knights of Morr and I was sold and saw the light . Cheers for the inspiration!

Cheers, and in regards to the unit filler, you got me thinking of ways to make that work...coggs are turning and some ideas are popping in and out, thank you Der Baron for the brain teaser. But seriously I like the idea and will be looking into it to see how it could be realised.
-
You are right, it is quite a bit of cutting, scraping an filing. As you said though, it's well worth it.
The only other option (if you don't like the 'classic' Empire horse) is the Vampire Blood Knights. Their horses require a lot less work to be 'Empirized', but cost a ton.
I like how well the Space Wolves parts fit the Chaos bodies.

Greetings all,
Quick update, with the army rapidly growing (well not really growing that rapidly as my posts have shown but back to the post), with the army growing it was time to make sure that there is no sliver of Chaos in is present in any of the troops. And that means its time to ask the Order of the Silver Hammer to send one of their agents, known in the common tongue as a Witch Hunter.
Again allthough the original model is cool I wanted something different. Bit of looking around and I found the model I like and I think fits the bill nicely. Enter Wolfgart von Heldood:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7413/9841897944_2767a6d120_z.jpg)(http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2889/9841921665_10a8f6152c_b.jpg)(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7324/9841894184_bfee8594c2_b.jpg)
A bit of moding and a few additions is all it really needed, the model was near perfect witch hunter material. Just had to remove a few details and then add some Empire flair. Sorry for the pic quality, bit of a rush job as I'm off for a few days on holiday, also managed to destroy my tripod so will need to fix that one aswell, all iin a days work.
Next on the work bench is the front rank of the knights.
Anyway looking forward to your comments.

Nice witch hunter! He feels sort of familiar though I can't quite place him? What did you used to look like before your Empire-ised him??

Really nice idea MiddenhaimGeneral I had my old Arch Lector on War Altar based on that model (or the the slightly modified variant of this model to be precise) Nice paintjob as well, ties him in well with the rest of the army.
Shadespyre - It's an Inquisitor from 40k.

Thanks Shade, to be precise the model is based on the Inquisitor with Inferno Pistol & Power Sword from the Grey Knights. Just had to remove some tubes, modify his gun and remove a sort of gas tank on his back. Much easier than adapting the knights.

Cheers Space, I tried to add touches of the color scheme but at the same time make him dark and shadowy. I can well imagine that you managed to make a great lector out of him. I am sure he can be modded into many different empire roles.

As usual updates have been slow with life demanding its due attention. Small steps have been made.
I have been working on the front rank of the knights, most of its has been primed. As part of the front rank I wanted to add a sort of multi purpose character. In order to keep the unit as a possible 10 knights with no characters, or with a warrior priest or with Luthor Huss.
As such I tried to make one of the models:
- a toned down yet distinct Luthor Huss.
- a clearly more of a priest compared to the other rank and file
- a rank and file that blends in with the rest of the models
All of these rolled into one. As such this is what I came up with
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5535/10388722485_6056d6139c_z.jpg)

Now I just need to try to complete the rest of the front rank in good time. Anyway let me know what you think.

First off all thank you very much for your comments. I tried to make them tough and it seems I managed so far. Progress has been very slow the last few weeks. The remainder of the front rank is all done in the base colours, just need to find the umphh to get on with it.
I have dug myself into a side project. A friend of mine wanted a diorama of a viking king in the Isle of Man. Spent a good deal of time pondering how best to model this and setup and place it in a scene and ended up going with the Dwarf line. I'm painting up Dwarf High King Thorgrim Grudgebearer and putting a flag bearer in front of him as he is transported to an important meeting or something. In a slightly goofy way I find a lot of the GW Dwarf range semi Viking looking in a slightly cartoony way.
Anyway, the Diorama is very much a work in progress and I need to get it done by Xmas so I can hand it over as a present. Took a quick pic of the work so far on the scenery:
Next stop is the paint station as I am about to Prime the entire work and start painting.
On a side note my freehand skills are not yet good enough to paint a pristine flag of the Isle of Man on the banner. I was thinking of printing it on tracing paper and then glueing it onto the banner and working it in. Anybody done something similar, if so what paper and glue did you use? Any tips and tricks much appreciated.
Anyway I'll keep you updated when I get the chance, need to keep moving on this one or miss Xmas

Well here you go Warhammer-Weib, its been a good day painting, untill it all went wrong... :eusa_wall: :eusa_wall: .
Lots and Lots of dry brushing and shading.

Still a lot of brown going on but slowly introducing colour. Starting to add the blue in what will be a pond.
Notice the tree in the background behind the house, it is from woodland scenics and to be honest quite nifty. It is made of some sort of tin like the old GW models and comes as a flat mold. You can then bend the branches to your liking:
Pretty heavy tree so I could feel it was unstable under the protective latex layer I covered the foam in. I then decided to use the needle from the plastic glue, adapted it so that I could squeeze in some pvc glue around the stem to help stabilize it, I was quite chuffed by my ingenious solution. All the painting around the stem was untouched and once the glue dried all will be well (famous last words).
I also placed a temporary dam so that I can pour the water effects in when the time comes:
I then double checked the stability on the tree and noticed it was still very wobbly, so I bit the bullet and cut it out and then filled the whole with plaster putty to give it a stable base and then put the tree in so that it could set stuck in the plaster. Then started taking care of the roof, which I turfed as they were at the time. Might use some shades to make it feel less uniform later on, undecided as yet.
Then checked the tree and noticed it was sinking. Strange, the plaster should be setting, so I removed the tree and added a bit more plaster and then replaced the tree. Came back 5 min later and the tree had sunk further. I was perplexed to say the least. Trying to use logic it took another 5 min before I suddenly thought of pictures of styrofoam basis that some of you have made and sprayed only to disintigrate. Hot flashes and panic ensued and I removed the tree and stuck my finger in the hole. An interesting experience to say the least, and shocking when I discovered my finger went all the way in and could move side to side. The hole was huge, one of the ingredients I added was eating away at the styrofoam ::heretic:: ::heretic:: ::heretic:: . Panic, ran to the bathroom and tried to remove all of the contents of the hole. By now it was very large, walking back to my desk, swearing all the way I needed a plan of action. I finally decided it would be best to cut out all the surrounding styrofoam to make sure it does not get worse;
Tears started to well up in my eyes. Destroyed all the work I put into it :icon_eek: :icon_cry: :icon_cry: .
Now I am stuck with a rudy big hole in the middle of my work. I left it to stand for the time being so as to make sure I cut out all the chemicals. And resigned myself to trying to think of ways to fix this and came up with 2 ideas:
1) Fill it in with either a new block of styrofoam or balsa and blend it in
2) Change it into a tunnel and somehow blend that into the story
(http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5490/11137736996_aa05de022c_b.jpg)
Let me know which one you think is best. And let this be the so many'eth warning to anybody else, BE VERY CAREFULL PAINTING AND ADDING GLUES TO STYROFOAM!!!!! :icon_redface: :icon_redface: :icon_redface: :icon_redface: :eusa_wall: :eusa_wall: :eusa_wall:

General, can you post a tutorial on how you made those bulky knights?! I think they're ace!
-
Usually with foam/polystyrene you need to put a coat of emulsion/water based paint over it first and then you can do most things.
I've always used ordinary powder mix with water type filler from the DIY store - the sort you use to fill holes before painting a wall for example.
I know GW undercoat spray melts polystyrene for example.
-
Oh nooo, I'm so sorry that happened, especially at this advanced state of work you had already invested in building your diorama, MG! :icon_sad:
You are not alone though (even though that's only a small comfort). I completely destroyed the base I had built for Warlord's witch hunter when I used spray for priming it.
Before:
Afterwards:
I somehow like the idea of integrating a tunnel into the story. But maybe it's just me because I am a dwarf player and especially fond of miners.
Another idea that occured to me: How about fixing the edge of it and fitting in a pond with some ducks or fish?
-
Just got back from a work trip. Spent a lot of time thinking abot it and still on the fence. Thanks for the comments and words of encouragement. Up to now I had taken the Styrofoam, melted the road and pond with a heat gun, then used a wall filler plaster mix to build the hills. Once this had dried used a woodland scenics latex like paint to cover and protect the work, then spray painted the base brown with a spray from the hobby shop which I specifically bought so that it would not interact with the styrofoam, tested this on an off cut and no problem there.. From there on could use standard hobby stuff on the protective layer.
I think there was still some plastic glue in the needle when I pumped in the PVA glue. Plastic glue melts the plastic and then lets it solidify, sort of like welding and I guess this caused the chain reaction :icon_twisted:. From there on cutting was the only option I think.
Got a few days off now to fix the error and hopefully work on completing it again, hope no more major hiccups happen.
General, can you post a tutorial on how you made those bulky knights?! I think they're ace!
I'll look into what I can do, I do not really have any work in progress photos, but I can walk through the stages to help explain the conversion. I might start taking more WIP pics to help explain the ideas and build, yet I am by far still an amateur.
Anyway keep you updated and will work on a conversion story of the knights.

Although it has been 2 weeks I have only been able to actually work on the diorama for about 2-3 days due to work. But there have been advances, the thing that took the longest was slowly "filling" the pond one layer at a time.
I ended up building a mine to fill my unexpected hole:
The pond still needs work on it, I need to put waves/ripples in it. The deer skull above the door needs some hilights as well as a few touch ups here and there. But in general the scenery is more or less complete. The floc came from Woodland Scenics. They have a few intro sets for a very good price and is more than enough for scenery. I used maybe 10% doing this diorama. I bought the Landscaping Learning Kit LK954 and Scenery Details Learning Kit LK956. Out of the two I would say the Landscaping one is the most usefull, with the scenic cement spray and basic grass and bushes. (sorry for the plug, delete if needed but I was very pleased with the result)
The water is not as blue in real life, actually dried very see through but its still drying and should hopefully finish completely clear.
The Dwarves are in there base colours and washes, need to get the layers done. 3 more days and then it needs to be done. Comments more than welcome as usual.

The mine fits in very well. As if you had planned it from the very beginning. :icon_wink:
-
Well it has been far too long since last update, I have had to remove the dust from my workstation several times in an attempt to get going again but I have failed Middenheim in contributing to its troops. On a more positive note I managed to finish the Diorama in just in time for Xmas, on a negative note I could not manage decent pics before handing it over.
This is the best I could manage so far:
The recipients were very surprised by there "Pleasant Surprise". They had a great time going through all the details I tried to put in. The freehand banner came out better than I expected.
I did catch a bit of a scenery building bug doing this Diorama. As such I had an idea for the GW Arcane Ruins set.
Here are the results, first of all a WIP shot I took:
The plaster stones I cast myself using Woodland Scenics molds. The tall pillar in the back is made of balsa wood and then had plaster rock face glued to it to try and make it look like a rough stone pillar. I also took a Dremel with a small but and added a lot of extra erosion on the GW pillars as two of the sides have no detail on them. Soft random touches quickly gave me the effect I was looking for.
And this is the final result as it stands:
I wanted the rock to look like it was weeping red water/blood, I did this by laying down a layer of water effects, then painting on a layer of GW Blood for the Bloodgod, then water effects, then layer of the GW, etc etc. This to try and get a depth effect with the two translucent layers. I think it worked out quite well.
Now that this is done I must get a move on with some new troops....
Comments always welcome, Grtz
-
Well if you aren't satisfied with it then I might have a spot for it. PM me for details then :-P

I got a bit of a scenery bug going ofter finishing the Arcan Ruins. I have decided to try the Sigmars Blood campaign with a mate of mine who does not as yet play WH. This means besides finishing the Middenheim army I need to build and paint up the VC, nothing like increasing the workload in an ettempt to keep motivate.... :eusa_wall:
As such I decided to play around building some scenery to get in the mood as you will. So here are some WIP pictures of what I am upto. The story behind this is to build a larger chapel as it were, with the mandatory graveyard around it. I bit bashed the Garden of Mor set to come up witht he following :
The rough idea, not even properly glued, sort of dry fit to see if it would work

With the base as a WIP
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2940/13899065306_a28286e06c_c.jpg)
I've made a few changes since making the pics but it gives a good general idea of what I am working on. The main issue I am fighting with is the colouring. I cannot decide between a simple dark grey or a sort of sandstone for the building. The roof is going to be a rusty bronze with plenty of verdigree but the walls are undecided as yet. Advice needed.

Interesting re-use of the Garden of Morr set, I like what you're thinking.
It would be a nice change to see this model in something other than dark grey! Adopting a warm brown sandstone as your local stone colour would make the army stand out a bit from the crowds.

Greetings All,
Thanks for comments and ideas. A quick update, the Chapel is done :smile2:, a while ago just have not got around to taking and uploading pics.
First two pics are WIP, basing not complete, last one is a bad pic of it done, will try to get a better one uploaded soon(ish)

And then with grass;
I went with the sand color and it worked out good. The copper oxidation was trickier than I thought, I used the GW oxide paint and it needs more working than I expected to get decent results. Its not a slap on effect, but needs layering and removing and higlighting to get the effect I was after, covering large flat surfaces probably made it more difficult than I thought.
Anyway comments as usual more than welcome. On a side note I am just finishing off a large block of troops and hope to get them online quicker than it took for this update.

Indeed they are, bought initially for his staff and bits for a Life Wizard conversion, ended up using only the top of the staff for my Metal Wiz conversion. Always had the dogs in mind for a unitfiller. This seemed as good as any.
