Title: What are you watching- TV shows
Post by: Finlay on February 15, 2016, 11:05:17 AM
I thought there was a thread for this, but can't find.

Anyone been watching Deutschland 83?

I really enjoyed it but read the ratings in Germany were poor. If they do a second series it would be deutschland 86.

Then, fantasising, a Deutschland 89 about the wall coming down could be cool.

The Wife and I also watched and enjoyed The Man in the High Castle.

Started Mr Robot but stopped after about 4 episodes.

Better Call Saul starts again on tuesday. I liked it as much as Breaking Bad, can't wait.

I watched the first of the new series last week. It was a bit meh to be honest.

My nightly feature is star trek on cbs action - currently deep space nine. I have to say it's a great show, shame that star trek died a death, would love to see a ds9 revival.

+1. As much as I like TNG, DS9 has the best characters* and the best storylines.

* except Seven of Nine, of course.

Currently watching last season of Downton Abbey, and other PBS programs if interesting as they come along.  Beyond that, not much of a TV watcher, other than occasional news program or sport event.

How is Downton Abbey my Amazon keeps thinking I might like it but Im unsure? What type of show is it? My professor likes it but shes like 75 although we share similar interests. I always got the impression it was a womans show but I could be wrong. The shows/Miniseries that I like/ have liked were

Rome
Deadwood
Spartacus
Hell on wheels
Outlander ( I find the amount of rape off putting though)
Black Sails
GoT
Peaky Blinders
The Borgias
Wolf Hall
I Claudius ( Im not sure if it counts)
Boardwalk Empire
Pillars of the Earth
Band of Brothers
The Pacific
War and Peace (I just finished it and it was pretty good)

My wife enjoys downtown Abbey; I guess I would think of it as a woman's show therefore. It's a period drama, although I would say considerably more amusing/entertaining for me than the likes of pride and prejudice Tec
Title: Re: What are you watching- TV shows
Post by: Gankom on February 20, 2016, 05:43:23 AM
My whole family likes it. It's a period drama and a fair portion of it tends to be about the various relationships of the characters, but there's lots about the aristocracy and servants having to change with the times, or going through the 1st world war.

I hate Gogglebox.

Downtown abbey is a woman's show.
It's a soap opera.

That's my Monday morning snobbery quota sorted.

Depends on how one defines it as being a "woman's" show or a "soap opera".

From my perspective, neither is an accurate reflection of the program.  It is a fictional story wrapped in a real world time period of history, which attempts to include the aspects of English society at the time.  It is about family, class, the adaption of such to the changing times.  In a way it is historical fiction.

Monday nights are the best. Star trek deep space nine followed by the new x files. X files episode three was finally back on form - had the chap from flight of the concords in and was genuinely quite funny. Plus a seduction scene by Gillian Anderson that will appeal to every man who watched the show as a teenager.

I enjoyed the first four seasons of Downton Abbey, although I watched it with my wife while I painted models.

Right now I'm watching Ash vs. the Evil Dead. Good stuff!

I guess I can give Downton  Abbey a try even if it is a womans show. Ive done enough macho things so I dont think watching it will damage my street cred too much  :-D

So I was wondering if anyone was watching a hip Spy thriller, with good 80s music and funny 80s fashion, and it slips to Downton abbey.

You win some, you lose some.

Don't scowl, Jean-Luc. Because one other Star Trek fact benefits you: bald captains are the best captains.

You started out that way. Sisko only turned into a supreme badass once he got rid of his hair and grew the goatee instead.

I've seen the first three episodes. The first was fairly awful, but the second and third were quite good!

If it's the one I'm thinking of (?Elizabeth Clarke, dad went to prison for blowing up a plane he didnt do or something) my wife watched it (and by default so did I) and it was quite good up until the last series and I think the reason was that they thought they were going to get cancelled, wrapped it up nicely and then got green-lighted another series and it felt a little tacked-on.

Anyone here watch Broklyn nine-nine? I love that show. Captain Holt is the best and actually there's not a single character I dislike which is fairly unusual for most tv shows.

My understanding is that they are similar, yet haven't seen Upstairs, Downstairs.

Downton Abbey is in it's 5th and final season.  To be honest, I'm not particularly thrilled with the current season.  It has been relatively dull, and too much focus on closing out the story lines, to the point where it almost seems forced in places.  Some of the acting has been less than stellar this season as well, including little chemistry between the oldest daughter and her most recent suitor, plus the deceased youngest sister's husband seeming to try a bit much in getting the two of them together.  Also, the in fighting between the two remaining sisters seems a bit much compared to previous seasons, not that it didn't exist, just not has heavy.  There's only an episode or two remaining, and I hope the remaining shows are at least ok.

Right now I'm really just watching Vikings and Death In Paradise on tv. I'm working my way through the sci fi show The Expanse and it's not to bad, but hasn't really hooked me yet. I was told it was Firefly meets Game of Thrones in space, and I cannot disagree more. It's a decent sci fi, but it is not like those at all.

That's the one, and I agree too. Only half a season of content left there at the end. Not much more to tell, and stretched out too long and slightly unsatisfying. But overall was decent IMO.

Kublai is excellent. Makes the show great.
I feel like answering people with a grunt/growl now too.
First episode was a bit stiff. Episode 2 sold me on it - with kublai's brother.

We've watched six episodes now, and we've called out allusions to or inspiration from just about every movie from the period it's set in ('80s.) I love the obvious posters hanging in the backgrounds at some of the houses -- The Thing, Evil Dead, etc. Enjoying the show quite a bit. More than anything else in a while. Looking forward to the last few episodes, but I also don't want it the season/series to end.

Also, I now want to get a couple of friends together for an oldschool D&D campaign.  :-D

My wife and I enjoyed picking out all of the 80s references. Someone has put together a video with side by side comparisons. We disagree on a few, and had a few others that aren't in the video, but most are what we picked up on too. Good to know we weren't just making it up for the sake of nostalgia.

(( Hey  Findlay ,

It does get better.   It keeps that slow burn feel to it... and Stranger Things reminded me a lot of Twilight Zone and Elfin Lied.

It's cool how at 8 episodes, it tells a chilling and creepy story.  And I like how the "villian" isn't standard. ))

Stranger things was great.

the 100 looks absolutely shite.

Strange and Mr Norrel looks fun, I think Rufus liked it. Quite want to get the wife into it.

If the wife doesnt like it, typically I then just don't bother and don't watch it.

Stranger Things - Binged watched it in one night last week. I've never done that before. It’s a show about a bunch of nerdy 12-year-olds back in 1983 who play D&D and get picked-on in school. I was a nerdy 12-year-old back in 1983 who played D&D and got picked-on in school. I did not give them permission to make a TV show about my life story. Also, my biggest crush back in the 80s was Winona Ryder. Nice to see she still does it for me, even if she is portraying 44-year-old, burnt-out, single mom.

DS9 – Greatest show on television. Ever. Benjamin Sisko yells at everyone. EVERYONE.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjvYiSDJujA

Downton Abbey – Great period piece. This is one to watch with the wife. It’s a very manly shows, despite what Finlay says.

Marco Polo – It’s on Netflix, and, due to the comments from the brothers here, it’s next on my list.

@Texas Yankee - Yes! DS9 for the win! I've watched most of the whole show nightly on challenge and then it just went back to the beginning and I'm watching it over again. It's a nightly ritual. The only downer was the finale which I thought was rubbish. Time and time again there are scenes showing what a good dad Sisko was, then he just goes to live with the prophets and abandons his son because ... reasons. Bleh!
The supporting cast - quark, garak, gul dukat - are fantastic.

Marco Polo – It’s on Netflix, and, due to the comments from the brothers here, it’s next on my list.

Yep! 1st episode is a bit wooden, but after the second I was hooked. Kublai is awesome.

Holy shit, you weren't kidding! I just finished episode 4 last night. This show is amazing! Kublai is indeed the man, gout and all!

I got about two and a half books into that series long ago, before giving up on it. I'm curious to see the show... but more like watching (what I expect to be) a disaster unfolding.

My wife and I watched the first episode of Strange & Norrell, partially based on above comments. Seems like it's got potential, curious to keep watching.

I liked "The Fall" a lot. Anderson was great, so was Dornan. It was tense and fascinating, altough I've never finished the second season.

Thought I would check out a trailer for Shannara...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crjkQHnDYu0

"The talent that's been assembled, the variety of locations, the beautiful backdrop of New Zealand, it really establishes the world of the Shannara Chronicles in a way that separates it from other genre tales."

Are you fucking serious? Can't think of any other fantasy films with a variety of locations, filmed in New Zealand, with an even better cast -- perhaps even one that may have included John Rhys-Davies?

So the series is separated from Tolkein the same way that Sword of Shannara was?

Haven't watched it yet, but I saw that it's on Netflix. So I may give it a try. Is there really anything that really "separates it" other than the (very unlikely) remains of 1000+ year old wreckage from the pre-armageddon world?

hehe well that was pretty stupid indeed, and on the last question ehh no besides the other then mentioned. Unless if you classify deamons different from orcs as the arch enemy.

Seen episodes 3 and 4 now and it's enjoyable so far, and elves are not goody two shoes here, so that breaks a bit from tradition. But the whole thing isn't great either. I would classify it lower then LotR and Hobbit to be honest (but I do rate LotR and Hobbit higher then most would)

Never read the comics, but to be honest I'm liking the show less and less with every season. I get that the horrors of a zombie-filled world are slowly being replaced with the hazards of a lawless post-apocalyptic world and the breakdown of civilization. After seven s3asons ig would've gotten stale otherwise. I'm just saying it could've been handled much, much better than TWD is handling it.

Post by: Gneisenau on October 26, 2016, 11:25:49 PM
Okay, I guess that requires a little explanation. Minor spoilers up to season 5 ahead:

- The entire setting is essentially a settler scenario in a rebooted North America. Zombie stories are usually about the alleged evils of consumerism; this theme is entirely absent from TWD. About the only concession is the country club in season 4, and Andrea nicking some trinket for her sister in season 1. Instead, much of the focus is on survival in a hostile environment, about farming and hunting. The ruins of civilization provide the backdrop, but are rarely necessary for the story.

- TWD is about "common people". None of them would in any way be special in our world. Rick is a deputy, Darryl a hillbilly, Carol a housewife, Hershel a doctor-turned-farmer, and it goes on. Andrea is one of the few to even have a college degree. The show is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, which I consider to be a very American trope. Compare and contrast this with GoT, where almost everybody is a noble (and the show suffers from that in my opinion).

- Much emphasis (maybe too much) is put on the importance of families - a notion that I think is more present in the conservative parts of the US than in Europe. To the show's credit, there's no homophobia associated with this.

- If you feel like it, you can make out a strong anti-government theme in the show. Government agents are at best well-meaning but ineffectual (Dr. Jenner, the National Guard) or far less competent than the "free" survivors (Alexandria) or plain evil (most of the Atlanta police department, or what's left of it). Is it an accident that the most prominent villain in the show fancies himself to be "the Governor"? Probably not.

I could probably go on if I thought some more but that's what comes to my mind for the moment.

FWIW, my wife and I both enjoyed all of Strange & Norrell.

We don't have cable, so it's usually Netflix or DVDs. Since the release of the Adventure Time Season 6 DVD set was conveniently the same week as our anniversary, my wife bought it for me. So we're binging on that now.

I also liked Strange and Norrell. Was very different from what I expected, generally in a good way.

I'm sure that others with young children can sympathize, but most of the TV I see anymore are children's shows & movies. (I have a five year old daughter.) So I've become an expert children's television critic. I've even thought of starting a web site or blog dedicated to a dual critique format, addressing both the quality & appropriateness of a show for young children, and then also addressing how watchable it is for parents. Because there are some shows that really make me want to scratch my eyes from their sockets. Maybe I should just start a new post here...?  :-D

At any rate, our latest show (though it's not new) is Zig and Sharko, and I think my wife and I like it almost as much as our daughter. It's about a hyena (Zig) stranded on a tropical island. He's hungry, so he's obsessed with catching and eating a mermaid (Mariana) who lives off the coast of the island. The mermaid's boyfriend is a huge shark (Sharko.) Zig has a friend on the island, a crab named Bernie. There's no real speaking, just emotive noises (screams, grunts, laughs.)

I can see where it's drawn some of its inspiration from both Roadrunner cartoons, and Ren & Stimpy. (Although the latter has set the tone for a lot of the animation that's come out since.) Probably the most violent show we let her watch (though Teen Titans GO! probably comes close  .) But as my wife and I have discussed, we both watched Loony Toons, Tom & Jerry, etc. when we were kids, and most of it happens off screen in Zig & Sharko.

Haven't read the thread, so I don't know if it's been mentioned - but I stumbled upon The Expanse by accident, and it's pretty damn good IMO.
They do a great job world-building, the technology seems plausible from what I've seen and the plot and characters are interesting.

Looking forward to season two, and I just ordered "Leviathan wakes", the first of the books the series is based on.

I got really into Expanse when it came out. I cheated and read ahead about the book, and some of the later stuff looks even more awesome.

I liked the murder mystery kind of direction on top of a sci fi story. The characters where good and the world building of the Belters was real fun.

No probs.
The baddie changes half way through anyway. Second episode, to me, i started to lose empathy for why luke was doing what he was doing anyway. It really is pretty boring, and could have been shortened into a 2 hr netflix movie instead. It just gets drawn out and drawn out. Really not a fan. Watching it felt like more of a chore. Jessica Jones we couldn't wait to see what happened. Luke Jones, we are finishing in the background each night while doing other things, because we were hoping it would get better. It didn't.

I've been watching Mystery science theatre 3000 via a smart TV
For those not in the know, MST3K is a show in which either Joel Robbison or Mike Nelson and their robot puupet companions 'watch' an old movie [usually of the B grade variety] and have a mocking commentary over the top of it.
If you thought Battlefeild Earth was a bad sci fi movie, check out 'Space mutiny' instead. Atleast Travolta wasnt trying to defeat his enemies by running over them in a pimped out golf cart

It didn't really seem like a pro abortion moment.

Yes, that's it! The problem is that the analogy doesn't work at all. It isn't even close. They incinerate a pair of mature adults!

There's a quote from the writer at the site I linked to:

Quote
"I got enormous flack from the right to life coalition because they destroyed the clones. They thought I was condoning abortion. In fact, I did put a line in Riker's mouth that was very pro-choice and the right to life coalition went crazy. He says "I told you that you can't clone me and you did it against my will, and I have the right to have control over my own body." That's my feeling and it was my soapbox, and it was one I got to get on.

I like the part about the polygamy. I especially like to imagine whoever is back at Starfleet getting all these reports, wondering what the heck is happening out there.

So I was a big NTG nerd when I was a kid but didn't really get into DS9.  I saw a couple of interesting clips on youtube which promptred me to watch an episode (the one where Garak's shop gets blown up).  My wife has never seen Star Trek before so she watched it with me.  She is now hooked on DS9.

Also I never knew the Klingon's had their very own Westley Crusher in DS9  :engel:

Deep Space Nine is so much better than TNG. The characters are stronger, the stories are more meaningful, and Garak never stops being awesome.

It still has some bad episodes, but not too many!

I love DS9, with the exception of the (not quite sure, but should be about right) first two seasons.

In the beginning it's pretty much trying to imitate TNGs schtick, with problem of the week plots that have little if any continuity, and the writers are clearly still trying to find their stride with the chraracters. After they get that down and find the courage to say "hey, we actually CAN have plots that take multiple episodes or even seasons to resolve, and that will make for better stories all round" it gets awesome.

Sorry, Picard! You were the best thing in TNG.

I remember giving up on Babylon Five during the first series, but then watching it again in the third and finding it was suddenly really good! It definitely had some wonky acting though, and as Aldaris said it looks quite dated.

They actually weren't allowed much continuity early on. Apparently, the writers were only allowed to introduce the Dominion 'if it was resolved after a couple of episodes.'  :icon_lol:  It took five series.

I looked at a list of episodes, and you're mostly right about series one and two being weak. But there are still some good episodes, notably: Duet, In the hands of the prophets, Cardassians, Necessary evil, Whispers, Blood oath, The wire, and The collaborator.

I don't think I ever watched DS9 in any sort of order, so continuity never really bothered me.

Is "In the hands of the prophets" the episode where you think they're going to talk about the complex issue of teaching religious doctrines in the classroom, but it really turns into the coup/assassination attempt on the Bajoran space pope?

I always enjoyed the TNG episode surrounding Data and his persuit of humanity. The episode where he's on trial I thought was very good.

Well, yes... but I'd describe it as being about the way politicians use conservative religious dogma (that they don't themselves believe in) purely as a way to gain power. Vadek Winn corrupts a young Bajoran into becoming an assassin by convincing her it's 'the will of the prophets.' And then later, she actually becomes space pope.

Maybe it's less relevant in the Trump era, since religion has been thrown under a bus along with everything else in favour of racism and lies.

It was, though it made the Federation look like anti-robot bigots. Data has been an officer in Star Fleet for years and only now they decide he's property?

It was a good excuse for a dramatic Picard speech though.

Talking of watching star trek, I'm towards the end of rewatching voyager.

I know it's not universally liked and they definitely could have done so much better had they have taken a ds9 approach to story arcs but for what it is I have a soft spot for it.

It's hard to deny that it also gets a lot better a couple of seasons in when they ditch kes and bring in seven. People often focus on the possibly more cynical view of why they changed them out, but honestly the seven progression of story and just overall ability to act is so much more compelling.

I kinda wish they had access to the tng crew in these days of complex story arcs with some great writers. They had an amazing cast there who sadly had to do a lot of pretty dodgy shows with a few standout ones here and there.

Absolutely!

Seven was exactly what the show needed, mainly because she created some moral discord in the otherwise pretty uniform la-la-land of the Star Trek universe. She was - at least in the beginning - the most "evil" main character that Star Trek ever had (not counting "Enterprise", because honestly, who would), and that was great. After all, meaningful tension is the basis for any good story.

Jeri Ryan was terrific, though of course she also got the best lines.

Overall though it's a shame how much potential they wasted with that show. The premise was great (but got squandered) and some of the actors were very good. "Year of Hell" gave a glimpse at what might have been.

So the wife and I have been watching DS9 and is it just me or is Garak gay for Bashir?

I have no idea how anyone could ever reach this conclusion. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2q2ySAOyqo)

The actor said he deliberately played Garak as being sexually interested in Bashir.

He's so proud of Bashir for shooting him in the James Bond episode!  :icon_lol:  That episode was also great for being a Holodeck plot that couldn't be fixed by just turning the thing off, unlike every time they did it on TNG.

Voyager wasn't that bad really, but it needed better writers and better actors! Borg lady and holodoctor were good, but the others were either bland (like the first officer) or actively annoying (the captain, the alien cook).

I didn't see all of it though.

Been watching a BBC short series "Sword, Musket & Machine Gun: Britain's Armed History"

Episode One was about Sword, axes, crossbows and the longbow.
Episode 2 went on to black powder weapons.

Episode 3 is next week and goes up to WW1 - the Vickers machine gun features. Episode 1 tells how an experiment on one single machine saw it fire over 5,000,000 rounds non-stop over the course of a week. How's that for reliability.

Not sure if it is available outside the UK?

Sounds great! Going to look for it. That vickers reminds me of a film of the Newfoundland regiment 'the blue putties' on the attack. They were virtually wiped out. The camera man had to shut it down as it was too depressing to watch. Of course this was censored back home at the time. I think the band 'great big sea' did a song about them. I'm not sure how my grandfather survived 4 years there. He was gassed a couple of times and that eventually finished him off at the age of 72 I think. Tough old codger 'e was😺

Yeah mulgrew was good but they definitely wrote her making done odd choices. Neelix is a big pity. I actually think he could have been a great character considering his empathy, wartime experience and wheeler dealer trickster knowledge. Unfortunately they relegated him to comic relief mostly and not good comic relief like the doc's huge ego. The guy is a pretty good actor too which makes it all the more a pity.

From what I can tell, beltran just got more and more underused and was upset by it so kinda went into coasting mode. It would have been much more interesting if they had kept some of the maquis fire in him but after a few episodes they decided he should be janeways loyal puppy.

As people here are more into ds9, was anyone else a dukat fan? I loved garek of course, but I really enjoyed the way that dukat basically got to be the exact opposite, outwardly villainous but with a secret and complicated moral side.
Title: Re: What are you watching- TV shows

Yes, it was probably Kate Mulgrew's character that was at fault rather than her acting.

The Starfleet/Marquis split in the crew could have been interesting if they'd actually used it!

I think he was a fantastic villain, because his arrogance, his fragile ego, his total self-deceit, and his underlying brutality felt very realistic. He was the man in charge of the occupation and oppression of Bajor who couldn't understand why the Bajorans didn't appreciate him. Couldn't they see that he was trying his best to look after them? He was only doing his job!

He became more and more obsessed with Sisko as the series went on, going to greater and greater extremes to simultaneously destroy him and earn his respect.

Damar had one hell of a character arc too.

I watched all of Voyager, but to me it's still the worst Star Trek series. People have already named most of my reasons, so I won't repeat them. The real pity was that the premise and some characters on that show were amazing. The Doc is still one of my all time favourites. On the other hand, Neelix was just cringeworthy (and I don't use that word lightly) - awkward, unfunny and annoying. Overall a lot of wasted potential!

As for Enterprise - I actually liked it for a lot of its run! It fell off towards the end, but most of that series felt very solid to me. Some good characters, and the setting was fresh and interesting. Some good plots too. Could have been better, but I don't really get the hate that show has garnered.

And all that DS9 talk makes me want to rewatch it again. Such a good series! I agree that Dukat was a fantasic villain. IMO the best one Star Trek ever had. And the show was also bold enough to smack our beloved Starfleet heroes with some truly dark shit - "In the pale Moonlight" is still in my top 3 Star Trek episodes ever.

I've just finished TNG and have started DS9.  I'm enjoying the characters so far despite many people telling me it's terrible.

I've also watched the first two TNG movies (Generation and First Contact).  They're ok (despite obvious plot holes) but it's like they tried to make TNG into an action movie and failed to make it either.  Such a waste.  Hopefully Insurrection and Nemesis are better.

Should I begin watching voyager concurrently with DS9 since they're set at the same time?  I already messed up my time frames watching First Contact before Worf made it to DS9.

DS9 was by far the best. I still enjoyed TOS, TNG, Voyager and Enterprise, but none of them had the depth of characters and storyline that DS9 had. Plus the space battles were by far the best! Dukat and the Cardassians in general were great villains, but the secondary characters (Damar, Weyoun, the female changeling leader) were what put the show at the top.

Big fan of the Expanse. Really looking forward to sitting down and binging the new episodes.

Started watching Black Sails.. seen episode 3 of season 1.. not sure what to make of it..feels full of political intrigues instead of brute piracy

I watched a lot of Black Sails for the first two seasons. It was really good at first, but then started becoming less and less about pirates. By the time I stopped mid season 2, it was just everyone wheeling and dealing but not actually accomplishing anything. It felt like multiple episodes of everyone just sitting at a table constantly renegotiating a contract, only to come back next week and do it again.

What would the Cilicians have used as lingua franca? Greek?
Title: Re: What are you watching- TV shows
Post by: Fidelis von Sigmaringen on February 10, 2017, 09:00:13 PM
Yes. When Caesar was captured, he recited to the pirates poems and speeches he wrote. Although not explicitly mentioned, Caesar must have written these works in Greek, which they apparently understood without problem, as they were supposed to comment. But not just as lingua franca - presumeably there must have been quite a number that spoke e.g. Pamphylian Greek as their native tongue, given that a number of Greek colonies were founded way before the conquest by Alexander.

The Expanse - Really Dull,  Weak Lead Characters.   I was told its the next best thing to Battlestar Galactica reboot, this is not the case.

You might like SyFy's Dark Matter better. It takes itself less seriously.

Pretty depressing what actually ends up happening to margaret in real life. Its quite plausible that townsend was her true love.

I rather like the voice of Scrooge.  The kids seem a bit off, but that just could be because I'm used to the old show.  This way they have distinguished voices.  And Webby doesn't sound whinny.

I'm pretty meh on all of them. I couldn't even make it very far into Jessica Jones, Daredevil with the Punisher bits was okay couldn't make a go of it with season one, and Luke Cage was really only entertaining for the villain that then dies mid series and so did my interest.

We tried watching daredevil a year or two ago, and didn't get it. Tried again the other week, and still dont get it.
Jessica Jones i think we found interesting because we liked her, we liked the blonde, we liked David Tennat bad guy, and we liked the odd snippets of Luke Cage.
We sat through luke cage, because we liked him in jessieca jones, but it felt like pulling teeth. The story i felt was really lacking and i didnt feel like the bad guy was that bad. It coukd have been told in a 2 hr special rather than stretched out over 10 hrs. We ended up just having it on in the background while we did other stuff.

We put designated survivor on after the 1 episode of daredevil, and found it more interesting. And we generally dont like the poltical / terrorism shows much. Except for Blacklist. But thats because James Spader and his character is awesome.

I liked Daredevil whenever it was about actual Daredevil stuff.

The worst part of these types of shows is almost always the uninteresting drama and side characters. If I wanted soap opera I'd watch that instead of superhero shows.

Sadly not on US Netflix (though it was for ages don't know why they dropped it) but the show ended at series 9 (in 2015) which means I've not missed more thus panic averted . 1st season Daredevil is a slog. Vincent D'onofrio is the only reason to watch it, tbh, because he is AMAZING. Jon Bernthal makes a great Punisher in season 2. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are the real shit, though. Iron Fist has been pretty meh.

Iron Fist has been pretty meh.

I've watched some clips of fight scenes from that series, and they did not exactly make me excited. I get that it is a TV series, but come on! Your premise is "the worlds greatest fighter does stuff". Put a little effort into the fisticuffs.

Thr girl seemed ok with her fighting. Only seen 2 episodes this far though. And to be honest, i normally zone out of fight scenes nowadays - they are just there IMO to push the story arc.
Title: Re: What are you watching- TV shows

Fight scenes are rarely engaging unless the stakes are high and the characters valuable (Mountain vs Viper), or unless the scene is unusually well choreographed and shot (Oldboy hallway fight).

Mountain vs Viper was a great fight scene. But unlike the obligatory episodal fight scenes in iron fist or another marvel show, the mountain vs viper fight scene also had significant build.

Twin Peaks season 3 is a "go", but there hadbeen ongoing problems. At some point, David Lynch was booted or withdrew from the project because of disagreements with the studio, with much of the cast threatening to walk if he didn't return. Seems like everything was resolved, though. First screenshots:
http://collider.com/twin-peaks-season-3-images/#images (http://collider.com/twin-peaks-season-3-images/#images)

Very weird to see all of these characters, who I've seen countless times on screen, frozen as they were 25 years ago, aged so much.

And yes, Padre, very much agree that Twin Peaks may well be the greatest television ever made.

Yeah, for sure. I definitely still love it to the bitter end. But you're absolutely right that, following the resolution of the Laura Palmer/Bob plotline, it loses a lot of focus. Wyndham Earle is also a character who seems fascinating and terrifying the way that Cooper talks about him, but pretty underwhelming in his actual depiction.

The last episode - particularly the sequence in the Black Lodge - is an absolute tour de force, though.

This song still gives me chills!

Season 1 was amazing; some of the best TV I've ever watched. Season 2? Acting was great, characters were great, but I've never seen a more convoluted plot in my life. Seriously, you needed a flow chart to maintain who was who and what was going on.

right?

It's amazing. really hope they catch the same vibe, could be amazing. Loved the film so much I went and bought some of the old Dredd casefiles- which have aged a fair bit tbh. I find the art quite fussy and not overly clear to follow, and it's a bit "story of the week" because, well, it came out weekly!

quite cool to read though. Some interesting crimes they dreamt up.

someone involved did battlestar galactica, which was awesome.

Watch it of you want a solid story with a great female villain and some great one liners. Watch it if you liked Die Hard (the original one) and definitely watch it if you ever enjoyed any Judge Dredd comic story. The music's good, and with the action confined almost to one 'mega block' it's not a messy hotch potch of elements like the terrible Stalone film.

I recommend it. Come back here and tell me I'm wrong after you watch it.

Watching American Gods. Not quite as good as the book, but I'm still enjoying it. The opening sequence is horribly annoying - good thing we're streaming it and can zip past it.

Also catching up on GoT. I think we're a couple seasons behind, as we watch it on borrowed DVD. (On season 5, I think.)

I see Netflix is helping fund a Witcher series, seems a sound improvement over the talk of a movie, which would struggle with the amount of material. No one knows if it will be CG or Live-Action, I'd hope for the former really.

For me this is great news. Witcher is a fantastic series of books and games and I'm sure that Netflix will do it justice. Here's hoping to a live action series!

Seems live action is all but confirmed, personally I preferred all CGI since appearance would by a trifle to the initial cost in that over the live action cut corners way in which I may enjoy most but string mail and all the idiocy they will bedeck extra with for cost reasons. Sigh I hope it is good, I've been drunkenly (mainly to manage watching it) going through the old series from Polish TV, that show makes me wonder what it takes to be a screen writer since many of the stories/vignettes from the books are not added by the adaptation (other issues aside).

Edit add: Polish seems to have the weirdest cognates with tongues I understand which is both fun and perplexing.

Glow was an absolutely hilarious show. A great comedy about [staged] wrestling. The gags about the clichéd characters, forced rivalries and absurd, convoluted stories. AND there were the other things; like the sherbet [I'm assuming that's white the piles of white, powdery stuff were] robot [referred to as a 'Gobot'], references to MST3K AND Stan Bush's Dare.  :eusa_clap:

AND on the subject of mst3k, I've been watching the latest season of that too. I wasn't surprised to see Lana Clarkson in yet another trashy barbarian movie. I kid you not, 'Wizards of the lost kingdom 2' is so crappy, it relies on spliced footage from most of the Deathstalkers to fill in bits.

Also been watching Last Kingdom. Its like a spinoff to Vikings

Watched the first three episodes of "The Mist", the new show based off of Stephen King's novella. I read the book back in the 80s; loved it. Saw the movie that came out about 10 years ago; loved it. This new series, however? Not so much. WAY too much contemporary politics, cliched characters, etc. Plus, after three episodes, it would be nice to see an actual MONSTER. If nothing else pops up, I may continue to watch this, but for now . . . meh . . .

I've been watching series 1-8 since last April, and planning on getting the DVDs for the 9th series this week (and series ten as soon as I can get my hands on them). Absolutely loving it, one of the most entertaining shows I've seen.

I'm very interested in seeing Jodi Whittaker take up the part, she was great in Broadchurch, and starring next to David Tennant (favorite doctor!) and Arthur Darvil for three seasons has to count for something.

The world we live in has a history of male domination, of stereotyping, of resistance to change, of playing it safe. Doctor Who has never been about that. It's not as if it's even all that radical. Deep Space Nine had Dax (a character who had lived previous lives as male and female and was still called 'old man' by the commander despite currently being female) twenty years ago.

Seconded. Honestly I don't understand what all the fuss is about, and I'm sort of disappointed at how the news of the doctor being a woman is completely overshadowing the fact that there's a new doctor. There's no change to existing lore- time lords turned into time ladies before, after all- so I honestly can't see why having a female doctor would be a bad thing. Or a good thing.

I like how we now have to traverse along the checklist to change established fictional characters for maximum diversity.

Switching sexes on established fictional characters for reeks of neurosis and desperation over something that has nothing to do with the fiction or characters in the first place.

Often its about taking a new perspective on something and refreshing a franchise. They did it with gritty blonde bond.

I guess I have accepted that everyone is looking for a new angle on a tried and tested formula.

Its not a matter of a checklist, its a matter of what people find compelling to watch.

The actor who plays the doctor is indeed replaced every few seasons, and it is always exciting to see how the new one will turn out. But I'm disappointed about how that excitement is being drowned out by the outrage of people everywhere over the new doctor being a woman, which honestly seems like a mostly unimportant detail for a shapechanger.

The fact that people are getting so hung up about a woman taking the role this time (whether they hate or applaud it) makes no sense at all to me. I want to talk/read more about there being a new doctor and how Jodie Whittaker is a great actress (from what I've seen in Broadchurch) and how that's awesome and all that! Not get caught up in this entirely nonsensical debate between the "no girls allowed!" faction and the "we must ponder how amazing this is for the representation of women in media" faction.

Bleh. Oh well. Today I should be getting series 9 in the mail, so that's awesome :D!

But there I think the casting plays second fiddle to the whole change in how to do a Bond film, ie a more modern action thriller type without Bond cliches. I've no problem with the new Dr Who but I agree to a point with patsy, also there was a certain amount of rar-rar bullshit to a Lady Dr Who which can be employed quite cynically, see Ghostbusters 2016, though I do feel the writers for this won't fuck it up. I mean it's not going to be the Minerva of Inspector Spacetime...

Seeing as how Steven Moffat is still in charge (as he has been since the first revival series in 2005), I doubt the level of writing will deteriorate much.

I thought he was leaving and from hard critics of the renewed series Moffat is a problem, at least as a show runner. He wrote good scripts yes but that was when you confined him to the time frame. Give him long runs/series and he will put out languid and uninteresting plots as he will lose focus.

So Survivor is still great. Australian Masterchef final on sunday - has been a food season. Otherwise yeah, reality is trash.
However Goldburgs? Are they still making that? I dont get the appeal. At all. But I guess I don't really do any sitcoms because I think they are trash too.

My main 'reality' show is Forged in Fire. It essentially just Masterchef, but with blacksmiths instead. 4 guys have a couple of hours to make a fancy knife, then the final two have a 5 days to make a historical sword or weapon. I just love watching the blacksmithing.

The main appeal of Goldburgs seems to be [according to my customers] is Adams toy collection. Numerous 80's things are purposely placed in the background in order to attract viewers. All in all, the show is kinda clumsy. Its ignoring its characters in favour of nostalgia and it doesn't seem to be working. The shows philosophy seems to be "Lets ignore the characters and focus  on those old toys in the background"
I still prefer it to reality TV though. Granted, the show is clumsy but two episodes that have made me laugh is the Transformers one and Fake I.D one
Barry is too thick to do basic maths and tries to use his Grandfathers I.D to buy beer[Barry is 17, masquerading as a 65 year old]
And in the Transformers episode. Adam tries to make a transformers episode[he makes his aged grandad get about in a poorly made robot costume] but worries about the old mans health. His grandad argues he is in peak health and insists on doing his own stunts
"I'm ok. I insist you run me over" he says

Binged watched GLOW on Netflix over the weekend. I remember watching GLOW back in the late 80s when I was in high school, and the Netflix series did a good job of it. Was surprised how much I enjoyed it; the only other series I've watched in one sitting was Stranger Things.

I loved GLOW. Speaking as a writer; what amused me the most about the show was the absurd characters/personas of the wrestlers then the contrived reasons for them fighting. Oh yes and hearing Stan Bush's Dare sold me on the show

Not really tv but documentary. A collection of Noam  Chomsky. This guy is incredible. A prof at MIT for 50 years, I think he says about everything I would like to say if I was a quarter articulate as he is. I would recommend looking him up and just listen. You might want to jump off a bridge when he's done but he's so down to earth and wise in the way of humanity. One of the few elite I really respect.

Started watching American Gods. It's been many years since I read the book (I remember enjoying it a lot), so I can't compare the two really - but the show is really fucking good. Very, VERY weird, and it requires a bit of "just accept this for now, you'll get it at some point" if you have no idea of the background, but great! It's a very unique show. Highly recommended.

My folks and I have been having a very interesting time watching it. Especially in the first episode when their following the early French attempts. I knew it went badly, but never knew it went THAT badly.

I ended up catching the remaining portion of the second episode on Tuesday morning, glad I did.  One take away from that was the incompetence of the officials in the Kennedy administration regarding the Vietnam issue.  Blew me away at the mistakes made, and through items like one taking charge without permission, and Kennedy himself trusting yet not getting it an item correctly either.  A mess of not understanding and underestimating the powers at work in Vietnam.

Yep, I was aware of the French failing, and saw it has another colonization attempt gone bad.  But yes, they were not competent in handling the situation anyway, and the Americans seemed to repeat the mistakes.  A total mess of might not always being right, and the recognition by the Vietnamese that if they kept the pressure up, and continually resisted, they could succeed.  In a way, of not completely similar to the Amer. Also ... found the idea that just the Americans calling themselves "advisors", probably more for political purposes back home, and the South saw them as working together, because they'd been fighting the north for years but didn't have the artillery and planes to cover themselves, to be very interesting.  They didn't even want to stand next to the taller U.S. soldiers, because they felt it made the more of a target during the fighting.

Supergirl season 2.
Is it any good? I've been watching Arrow seasons 1-4 and Flash seasons 1-2, as well as Legends of Tomorrow (first season), and I really liked them (well, most of them, anyway). If Supergirl is on the same level as those, I might need to check those series out as well.

Also the third season of Gotham arrived in the mail! Here's to hoping they haven't completely ruined it! Because let's face it, the last episodes of season two were getting weird.

Supergirl season 1 is pretty good. Its a good series to watch with a wife or daughter, because it has good empowering feminism messages which isn't common in a superhero tv show.
Almost finished season 2 and still enjoyable. Supergirl I think is a good choice, and there are some interesting support characters - primarily Jon Jones, but her sister is cool too.

To be honest, I find legends of tomorrow endlessly frustrating because of how they use and explain time travel.

Only seen Gotham season 1 and liked it.

A Netflix Disney movie called Ghosts in the Mountains. About snow leopards and following a mother and her cubs. To me there is no creature more beautiful, majestic blah blah than this cat. Thank god it's in such a hard place to get to as it provides some safety. Just one look at them and the tears start lol. It all started with this wildlife mag cover when I was 12 and it's been my favorite animal ever since.

I binged on Stranger Things 2 - It starts sort of weak, and builds up with tons of references to 80s films.  Only sadness was I ran out of material to watch.  I'll not spoil,  go see it.

Two episodes into Walking Dead and I'm feeling the show is coming apart,  siege episode last night was full of hollywoodism gunfights that were completely stupid utter bullshit down to the crappy audio work on the firearms.  I was fighting to keep my eyes open and was glad it was over so I could go to sleep.  I'm nearly up to date on the comic books and generally know what's to come which adds to the boredom of the show.

I Finished Westworld a week or so ago and enjoyed it more as the revelations appeared.  I'm looking forward to season2 which is more classic Westworld.

Amazon LOTR deal will “explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring,” with a potential spinoff series also included as part of the deal.

spinoff series- most likely do not want.
preceding fellowship = Hobbit? (feels a bit unnecessary but at least the films were shit, so could wipe those from our stank) Silmarilion? (never read it, at least not done on film, could be decent?)

The Punisher I think is the best and most consistent Netflix Marvel show to date. Maybe it is because it isn't really about a 'super hero' and feels more like if Enemy of the State didn't have Will Smith as some lawyer type but some sort of action bad ass.

The toys that made us [please read this first before judging me for watching a show about toys]
I used to work in toy stores and for a few years, I hocked old toys on ebay [often referred to 'plastic crack' in some circles]
Its an interesting show on how the big brand toy franchises all came about.

Oddly, my main reason for watching it was to see an old online buddy of mine. He used to work for Hasbro. We met online in an odd thread about obscure G.I.JOE's. We disagreed on a lot of stuff but I always respected him. The reason I unfollowed him online was because his opinions were attracting a lot of negative attention and I was sick of seeing them pop up in my inbox every morning. I miss talking to the guy. I was happy to see him on the G.I.JOE episode though.

Here's some stuff I found amusing after binge watching half the season.
The prototype Kenner Jawa was made from a sock [the designed spent the rest of the day, getting around with half a sock on one foot], the prototype Barbie was sculpted with nipples [which an executive promptly filed off as the brand manager found it offensive] AND a female G.I.JOE was sculpted with her top button undone. The sculptor did this on purpose and nobody else at Hasbro noticed.

I thought Achilles being rendered in black in so much ancient artwork was him having been dipped in the River Styx and being invulnerable.

Black figure pottery art was a trend that presented many characters in black in contrast with a lighter background.  There are plenty works of Achilles presenting him as white. I'm trying to find written material saying Achilles skin was darkened being dipped in the Styx.  I grew up on greek mythology read to me in greek when I was a a toddler and later reading the same books learning how to read Greek.  I never recalled anything suggesting his skin turned black getting his invulnerable upgrade.

I remember the Internet exploding when heimdal was first shown so I wouldn't say it got a pass.

I never got the Roman Britain cartoon. A ton of historians came out if the wood work to verify there would have been black Romans at Hadrian wall. We're taking about an empire that had huge chunks of Africa under its domain for hundreds of years.

I think he gets a pass because he is Idris Elba. An accomplished actor.
I remember the internet exploding though. To be fair, he looks after the bifrost which is rainbow coloured, so he could be any coloured in theory?

Internet went off for the flame from Fantastic 4 too. I guess same as the Doctor being a woman?

That makes sense I guess. Legions would be from everywhere, however local populations would be easier to move. Where did that population go post empire?

Well from reading AskHistorians or SPQR for the most part, it seems that that population stayed. Plenty would have left as things decayed, but for the most part it seems they stated and eventually assimilated into later populations.

I know Mary Beard, who's one of the premier roman historians right now, wrote about the roman cartoon and showed the actual evidence for the 'man' in the cartoon. A roman officer from Africa who married a local and died during garrison duty. Seems like it was a pretty normal thing, but not exactly in huge number.

I think examples of the BBC doing this thing before (ref. Margaret of Anjou and the Roman Britain cartoon) as well as several no-whites-need-apply job ads tells a fairly obvious story about internal policy.
I see, and will keep an eye out for more info.

A Greek myth. Wouldn't it make sense to cast a guy who looks Greek to play a legendary Greek character, rather than someone who looks African?

We both know that if there were no contemporary cultural race neurosis influencing the casting choice, they'd pick someone who looks like he's actually from the same continent as the character he's portraying.

Next up: A film about the ancient Yoruba demigod myth Aganju. Main character to be portrayed by Chris Hemsworth to assuage white identity politicians in 2018. No problem here, even though it would be pointless and less believable?

Not too long ago, when they mentioned possibly Idris Elba could be the next James Bond (before Daniel Craig agreed to sign on for a fourth film), I thought to myself "This just in! Playing the lead role in the re-make of the 1971 cult hit "Shaft", Matt Damon!" Funny thing is, I remember the outrage when they first cast Daniel Craig for Bond, and everyone was like "A blonde Bond?? Heresy!!!"

Eh, I'm not thrilled with this Achilles stuff either, but I don't think they'd default to the same continent otherwise. Generally they'd just pick Generic Handsome/Beautiful White Guy/Girl for EVERYTHING unless they need some rough streetwise cop to be black.

1. You're completely mistaking my objection for something more sinister. Regular white dudes with tans and black hair dye can pass as being of Levantine descent.

Exhibit A and B, screens from Mel Gibson's The Passion of The Christ:

If they didn't pass as middle-eastern looking, Mel Gibson probably wouldn't cast them, because he probably cares about how believable the actor is in his or her role. This means no Jet Li portraying Jesus Christ.

Exhibit C and D, screen from Mel Gibson's Apocalypto:

Notice how there are no Hebridean gingers or sub-Saharan Africans playing the roles of Mesoamerican tribesmen. Why is that, do you think? Perhaps there is a good reason not to cast pasty, freckled ginger Hebrideans as Aztec warriors.

I'll also note that I have the same opinion on GITS as I have with this, and that I did in fact post about it.

There's a clear distinction between what Mel had done in Passion in the Christ getting capable actors to play roles vs the BBC casting White Greek Achilles as a black man to drive a racial political agenda.  You want to back out of the argument because you have no ground to stand on. To note, I didn't like that ScarJo was cast as Motoko for Ghost in the Machine.  This is a result of movie studios seeking superstars to carry a role to bring in audiences.  Surprisingly most Japanese didn't have a problem with it and the movie had a good showing in Japan regardless.

Troy has been done to death in film anyway, I can live without watching cultural revisionist black Achilles.

Would be better to have an Oddyssey or Aeneid show/movie/thing.  Its at least fresher than Troy.

Although the Odyssey has had a few retelling and re-imaginings like "O Brother Where Art Thou" and "The Spongebob Movie." So arguably we're tapped out there too.

Just leave Homer alone for now.

ah, so it's ok to whitewash people as long as it doesn't look like they have been. cool.
Again, your mode of thinking is different from mine. I don't care about whitewashing or blackwashing - I care about the actor being suited for the role. It's just a matter of convenience that a lot of pale people can get a tan and look more middle eastern than they really are. The opposite for black people is slightly less convincing - as evidenced by the documentary "White Chicks".

When you deliberately get someone who's less suited for the role to assuage real-world worries about "institutional racism", you're no longer telling a story, you're a state-funded broadcasting bureau making political propaganda. This is illiberal and short sighted, for reasons you probably understand.

The idea that you counteract nebulous "institutional racism" with actual institutional racism - i.e. BBC jobs where no white people may apply - is also confusing to me.

Compare the motivation for the two decisions. They wanted Johansson for GITS not because there aren't enough white people in Japanese films - they got her because she's a big Hollywood star for a film marketed towards more countries than just Japan.

I.e. the reason was greed, not political race activism.

I agree with patsy on most of this.

That said, I don’t mind re-imaginings if they serve a purpose. One example could be binary swapping out all of the characters for a particular reason. I have no actual problem with the idea of all women Ghostbusters. I have heard the execution was bad, and personally I dont like Kristen Wiig or Melissa McCarthy, but to explore an idea of a full swap instead of token selection to have ‘representation’ is more interesting, and less politically motivated.

On the subject of Homer, I picked up the latest Simpsons dvd release [season 18] and most of the episodes are hard to watch more than once. As much of a fan as I am of the show, I wish Fox would let it go with dignity. The extra features which...feature cast and crew members are not fun to watch and or listen too; as they all sound tired and disinterested.

Hmm.
I take it your claim is that institutional racism causes films with white people to make more money, or something to that effect. There are multiple explanations for this that are far more plausible than that of institutional racism.

1. Big Hollywood films are made in the US, which is majority white.
2. Hollywood films feature Hollywood stars, who are highly likely to be white because of point one.
3. The primary markets for Hollywood films is Europe and the US, who share the same cultural sphere more than other nations.
4. Hollywood stars sell tickets. Scarlett Johansoon is a ticket-selling name, and simply casting her is a marketing tool on its own. This applies to any major league actor whether it's Denzel Washington or Brad Pitt.

Furthermore, in the case of the BBC, your premise is not just incorrect, it's actually the opposite of what you claim. Quote:

Quote
Figures show in 2016, 13.4 per cent of the Beeb’s workforce are from Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities.

This is actually above figures from the 2011 Census results, which show 13.1 per cent of the UK population are from Black, Asian and other ethnic minorities.

And the licence-fee funded corporation aim to go one step further and increase Black, Asian and ethnic minorities to 15 per cent in their workforce by 2020.

But critics are questioning why the BBC is positively discriminating if they are already one of the “most ethnically representative employers in Britain”.

Source: https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/670266/BBC-advert-white-people-ethnic-equality-staff-job-internship

In summary: The BBC is in reality being openly and deliberately institutionally racist against white people - not black people. As such, any rationale for hiring black Achilles that is based on this supposition will be invalid.

Quote
your final conclusion that Being racist is OK if you're doing it because you're greedy
Incorrect reading of my statement. I think that it's not racist to inappropriately cast a white hollywood star for a non-white role as long as the motivation for doing so isn't racism. I also think it's not OK to cast white Hollywood stars in roles that they aren't appropriate for in order to make more money selling tickets. I think it's a detriment to the story being told.

If I hire ScarJo for a Japanese character GITS instead of some Asian actress because ScarJo happens to sell more tickets in the primary market of the film, then I'm a run of the mill greedy hack, but probably not a racist.

Firefly is damn good.  Starts off a bit rough IMHO and about 1/3 of the way through they really start finding their footing, and the rest is great.  Its a western in space, and a mighty fine one at that.  You grow to love the crew any their eccentrics. Its a shame they only got 1 season and a movie.

I'm going to have a look at it, sounds fun!

My folks and I are currently going through a mix of Peaky Blinders, Father Brown, The Orville, Longmire (We had to take a break because it was getting to dark/Nihilistic) and Vikings. Sadly the glory that is Vikings has ended till the next half of the season comes. Vikings is probably our #1 show, above even Game of Thrones.

Finished Mindhunter. If you have an interest in crime fiction and periodical stuff your bound to like.
I'm not to sure what to make of Ed's depiction in the series. One minute he's as nice as pie and the next...well....its [curse for intercourse]  Ed Kemper

I've been thinking about something and I kind of hate bringing the subject up. John and Ted.....Ted and John [or Wingus and Dingus as I've taken to calling them] keep cropping up in the media. There's a South Park episode with them both in it, Ted [sort of] appeared in an episode of Venture bros
'Twisty' from American horror freak show was clearly a nod to John [very uncreative and disturbing if you ask me] AND Ted's getting another upcoming biopic this year  :x [Jeff's getting one too] and I cant help but think WHY do people keep dragging up these two [dare I say it] clowns. Let them burn in hell I say. Do they keep cropping up because the public has an interest in these bozo's or am I being haunted by evil clowns?

Sounds interesting. I have a fascination with military history. I often get into heated arguments with people as they have misconceptions about famous campaigns and battles [such as the Revolutionary and Civil wars]. Espionage is such an overlooked topic of the periods. I'll have to check it out

its a great show, it does not go into the battles as it does the espionage acts. What I also liked is how they showed that people were there fighting for many reasons, freedom, unity, profit, and king. anyway check it out.

Turn was a really good show. I got a bit tired of some of the British being almost moustache twirling villains but as a loyal Canadian I might be a bit bias. (Plus Simcoe, the main bad guy, was pretty important up in my neck of the woods)

The espionage stuff I thought was all pretty well done, and generally a well made show.

Simcoe was a great bad guy and the end was pretty entrusting. I didn't think the Brits were all that way but It did show a bit of arrogance on their part.

Agreed. They needed some good bad guys, and I don't mind a show embellishing a bit to make it interesting. It certainly helps the atmosphere. I also enjoyed seeing Roger's Rangers actually get a mention in a show. I always thought they were an impressive unit.

I'll start to GM a Shadowrun campaign soon, so I looked around for something Cyberpunk-y to get in the mood - which led me to Altered Carbon.

I'm currently 4 episodes in and throroughly enjoying it. It looks great, the premise is interesting, the action is good (and suitably ultra violent), I like the cast, and the plot is interesting so far. It also has some very cyberpunk themes.

Looking forward to watching the rest of it!

Yeah, its not laughing at people who do or dont know IT... its more the characters are not funny and the points they make about IT are not great. Perhaps if I watched it at the time they were made it would have been more amusing, I don’t know.

Yes, agreed. The actors are all good and it should be a good show. But apart from a few clever moments and the two boss characters it's not much to write home about.

Anyway, if you want to experience the pinnacle of comedic acting and writing, check out the live action version of "Prison School".

So watched Fallet on Netflix...reasonably amusing dramedy but is it some sort of Scandinavian inside jokes that Finns are insanely morbid people or something.

Also watched the new Luke Cage, season was one of the better Marvel Netflix series though the one where they throw Danny Rand in really dragged it down (perhaps more the baggage than anything).

I haven't read this thread in a long time, nor have I watched TV much lately. But I just finished a binge of the first season of True Detective and I loved it. It had its weak points. But it hit a lot of the right literary chords and fringe pop-culture spots for me.

I've watched both and like both, I get the dislike since the two seasons are not the same crime show and the first is done way better. Now if you look at the second a 'heist gone wrong' sort,  I think it works out.

Watching Fresh Prince of Bel Air funny, educational :D and never seen it before.

I tried Brooklyn Nine-Nine but it seemed really simple. Not sure if I should give it a little more time for characters to develop or something, but too simple atm.

Arrested Development relative funny, and a little more complex that Brooklyn Nine-Nine?

I am not much of a series/movies expert, so what do you suggest?

I loved Dr. House, was okay with breaking bad, and which there was more Blade.

Still one of my favorites. Not totally accurate, but not too far off either. Better than I'd expect for most popular historical TV series or movies.

I watched a few trailers for Disenchanted and that killed any interest I had in it.

My 7 year old daughter and I have both been home sick all week. She introduced me to Trollhunters. She keeps bouncing around between a half dozen shows and I keep saying, "hey, how about more Trollhunters." (Not working...) One of the more enjoyable kids shows I've seen in a while!

My my wife, a friend, and finally I started watching the new Twin Peaks series a couple weeks ago. But our friend went on vacation, then the above mentioned sickness set in and now I'm aching to get back to more. Only watching the first two episodes, but I'm curious to see more. (Loved the original 2 seasons.)

Disenchantment on Netflix. Its pretty funny if you're a fan of D&D, GoT, Conan the barbarian, or any fantasy setting.  It takes awhile to find its footing but its pretty good.  The last 3 episodes really drew me in and I just found out I missed the post credit scene from the final episode which gives a further "What?!" to the season ending. Unlike Futurama or the Simpsons it has a serial story as opposed to an episodic one. It has the same humor as Futurama but more raunchy since it isnt on TV (always look at the signs and backgrounds!). I can't wait to see season 2 after all the craziness and mystery that has been built up by the end of season 1.  That's another thing, netflix didn't list it as "season 1" but as "part 1" and the next season is called "part 2."  I found that an interesting decision. Maybe they planned to wrap it up after 2 seasons (parts)?

Take it with a grain of salt, but I was reading at one point that this is season 1, and they were waiting for that final episode to determine if they'd do a season 2 or a second half of season 1. I was reading this a month or two ago, but they were saying that if it's not well received they would take a break, rejig it and come back for season 2. If it WAS fairly well received they'd order another half to make each season about 20 episodes and not wait for a season 2.

Binged "Hilda" on Netflix with my wife and daughter.  Very whimsical and fun show.  Like a chill version of adventure time.  Its about a little girl who lives in the wilderness with her mom and encounters Norse creatures.  She deals with trolls that are rocks during the day and alive and destructive at night, mountain sized giants, and even tiny elves that want to evict her (but she cannot see them until she fills out the proper paperwork). I believe its based on a graphic novel of the same name and written by a guy who lived in Norway for a time when he was a kid. Wondering if anyone else has watched it (including our Scandinavian members). My father-in-law who loathes cartoons got quite invested in it. We loved it and I think its worth checking out.

I've been seeing a lot of "Goblin Slayer" on imgur and the memes got me interested. I signed up for crunchy roll (with ads) and watched the first 2 episodes. I was prepared for the brutality of the first episode (there's a rape scene and anytime a kidnapped girl is with a goblin rape is implied) thanks to the fair warnings from imgur. Its just straight up brutal violent too. I do find it interesting that the concept of the story comes from MMOs where an inexperienced party pulls too many adds and it destroys the party. The same sort of thing happens. Its also interesting just how many goblin extermination jobs there are and yet all the experienced adventures avoid goblin jobs since they see its beneath them. The only ones going after the goblins are the rookies (that usually end up dead or worse) and goblin slayer. Since no one is taking the goblin jobs, the goblins are becoming a real problem that no one wants to deal with. He's looked down on by the other veterans as his gear looks dirty and crappy but the first episode illustrates that its all practical and perfect for goblin slaying and fighting in tight caves. Goblin Slayer doesn't care though. He just wants to kill goblins. He's essentially DOOM guy (https://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/scale_small/1/16944/2976258-cmzr9taucae3_np.jpg) but in a fantasy setting. Never removing his armor let alone helmet. Even his introduction moment has doom like music.  I'm only on episode 2 but from the memes on imgur I know that he also attracts a harem of women, but its a harem subversion (so far) as he's not interested or flustered by the women. He's only concerned about killing goblins and finding new ways to kill goblins. Also fair warning there is a bit of TnA to titillate viewers. Its very pandering at times, especially with Goblin Slayer's childhood friend that he stays with. Expect physics defying bounces.

Just finished last season of Shetland.  Man, if you like the English small town murder industry mystery dramas, this is a great show for you.

My love of the English small town murder mysteries has left me reluctant to visit again.  Chances are nearly 100% I would be the victim OR discoverer of a dead body if I ever go to a village ever again.

Although, those are the same odds I would be the victim of a serial killer in the US.  If TV drama is anything to go by, everyone is either a Serial Killer, a victim being stalked, a victim who survived or a emotionally abused Special Victim Crime Special Scene Investigator Consultant Special Unit officer hunting them down.  Oh, or a retired SVCSSICSO who is embittered/hunted/become a hunter/blackmailed.  Really don't like those odds.

I will stay in Canada.  Although the number of Moose attacks is on the increase.

Anyways, Shetland, Good, Well Acted, Not going to Visit.

good place season 3- great, as usual.

Sexual education- pretty enjoyable teen drama, weird aesthetic as it was set ostensibly in the UK but extremely american style.

Cuckoo and Killing Eve up next

Holy shit.

I just watched another episode of the Orville and the plot was similar and executed better than a particular TNG episode. A crew member develops feelings for the Robot crew member and they start a relationship. It felt so...good. It was done better than the Data's girlfriend episode. It was just wonderful and sparked feelings and wonder like when I was a kid watching TNG.

This show has no right to be this good but Fox has really outdone themselves and got their own Star Trek show. Its really weird that they pitched or advertised the show initially as family guy star trek because the last two episodes I've watched is really different from that.  I may be a bit biased as I have only seen 2 episodes but it just makes me want to watch more. I look forward to Thursdays now to watch it.

I've seen a couple of episodes further back.  It struck me as a bit of a spoof of Star Trek.  Not that it was bad though.

I'm excited for the two part conclusion tonight on the Orville. Worth a watch.

The Kylons sound just like the Geth from Mass Effect when they were data processing. Was really cool. I think in a way Issac is Legion from ME.

Watched the Orville's conclusion to the 2 parter "Identity"

It was freaking amazing! It had a great story with a pretty legit space battle on par with the battle for earth from ME3.

My daughter triple binged on Hilda. Watched it on Netflix three times within just a few weeks. I saw quite a few of them and enjoyed them quite a bit. Wouldn't mind seeing the whole series to fill in the blanks, to be honest. Similarly, she got me watching Troll Hunters with her for a while, but she lost interest about 3/4 of the way through the series -- I'm tempted to finish it on my own!

I don't watch much grown-up TV.

My wife and I are both big Twin Peaks fans, and David Lynch fans in general. We just finished watching Twin Peaks: The Return and appear to be in the minority of people who absolutely hated it. There were certainly some great parts of the series, but it wasn't worth sitting through all the garbage to get to the good parts. A friend who was also a big fan started watching with us, but dropped out around episode 5 because she was smarter than us.

Looking forward to the next seasons of American Gods & Game of Thrones.

Ever since we got HBO to watch Game of thrones, Fraggle Rock is on HBO around the time we try to put my 1yo daughter to bed. Unlike other shows where she doesn't care to watch and gets fussy (Except TNG, she loves Picard's voice) she has been utterly entranced with the Fraggles. I've never seen her so enthralled in a TV show since TNG. I haven't seen Fraggle rock since I was a kid on the Disney channel (when the cable company would give it to us for free for a week to entice new subscriptions which only happened once a year if we were lucky). I am just so excited that she likes it. We almost didn't watch it yesterday (her first time watching it) because my wife was worried it would be too loud for her to fall asleep to. I asked her to give it a chance and sure enough my daughter was glued to watching it while drinking her milk and was ready for bed by the end of it.

So when Prime added HBO as a subscription option some years back, I saw HBO had all of Fraggle Rock. Subsequently I went to sleep that night watching Fraggle Rock.  Quality Henson stuff right there.

Netflixbinging on "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries".  Yes, yet another amateur murder solving sleuth.  Its light and fun and set in late 20's Australia.

Who knew Australia in 1927 had so much high society?  I didn't.  It has all the usual story plots, and all usual stereo-types.  But its fun and silly and I get to play "Who do you think is the culprit?" with the wife.

So has anyone heard of this show on syfy called "Krypton" that takes place 2 generations before the events of Superman?  I have never heard of it but Season 2 just premiered. Zod and his followers look a lot like NOD troops from C&C Tiberium Sun so it piqued my interest.

As far as I can tell Val-El, patriarch of the El family, is arrested and executed by the corrupt leadership of Krypton. The El's are stripped of their noble privileges and forced to live in the slums. Val-El's son, Seg, figures out that his father was arrested because he found a terrible secret. Then some people from the future come back in time to save Krypton. An earth man named Adam Strange and General Zod.

From what I can tell its one part Dune, one part Red Faction, and a dash of Game of Thrones. Val-El is even played by the same actor as Barristan Selmy from GoT.

Edit: Oh, also the actor that plays Zod sounds VERY similar to Patrick Stuart, at least in the speech I heard him give in Season 2's premier. I may go back and watch season 1.

So, youtube suggests the weirdest things sometimes. Recently it suggested episode 6 of the series Super Science Friends which I had never heard of before. So I watched it. Holy butts it was good! The premise is basically famous scientists throughout history team up as a super hero team.

Winston Churchill ends up Nick Fury-ing the whole thing by getting Nikola Tesla (Electric powers and Tech) Marie Curie (Radiation Powers that functions like a green lantern ring) Charles Darwin (the ability to morph into animals), Sigmund Freud (Telepathic, but only regarding people's sexual thoughts), Tapputi (As the world's first chemist she can make tonics and perfumes), and Z3 the first computer. They were lead by Albert Einstein (Who was a super saiyan?) before he was murdered. Churchill clones him and now he's a teenager. They team up and fight zombie cosmonauts, Thomas Edison, and even Shiva. It looks like the first 5 episodes have a more internet comic design to them and episode 6 is an anime.  Honestly the anime episode 6 is very well done. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a one off though.

My wife and I just finished Good Omens. A lot of fun. More on target and more entertaining than American Gods has been. (Sadly -- I loved boht books.)

I want to post a GIF of my favorite scene, but at the risk of revealing spoilers, I'll just post this tiny part of it -- hopefully those who have seen it will know what I'm getting at.  ::heretic::

half way through good omens and really really enjoying. So silly but perfect, tonally.

iirc, the book shifts slightly away from being so focused on aziraphale and crowley in the later stages and suffered for it, so will be interested to see if the show stays so strong.

I finished Good Omens on the weekend and loved it. SO much better then American Gods turned out. I was quite disappointed with the changes in American Gods, but the changes in Good Omens come across much better and less intrusive. I was particularly bothered when I heard that Gabriel, who's not a character in the books, would become a 'main' character, but it actually turned out to be well done.

So I mentioned before (http://warhammer-empire.com/theforum/index.php?topic=51402.msg1043440#msg1043440) that I have been watching Fraggle Rock with my 1 year old, and by golly is this show awesome. I did watch a bit of it as a kid, but now seeing it with adult eyes I am amazed at some of the subject matters and writing done for what is essentially a kids HBO show. For example there was an episode where Boober and Red get trapped in a cave in and there isn't much hope of rescue, so the talk about death and how they are ready to die. That's some heavy shit to drop on a kid! Especially by today's standards for kid shows, but they handled it very well that not only a kid could understand but learn from. There was another episode dealing with Doozers and their society norms being challenged by someone that didn't want to do Doozer work. Not because she was lazy as other Doozers would mock her about, but because she would rather draw and design instead of build. There is also a couple of straight up terrifying episodes like when the two rat characters leave the Trash Heap and end up getting abducted by an evil guy that wants to enslave them, and another where this blob thing rolls into town and eats Doozers. I am just amazed at how well written these episodes are. The characters are great too. As a kid I really liked Gobo and Wembley but watching it now I am realizing that Boober is probably the best character out of the main 5 Fraggles. Every one of his episodes are just very well done. I don't think I appreciated his character as a kid because he always seemed like the coward "scaredy cat" guy whereas Gobo was brave. Red is probably the worst character of the group but her flaws allow her to learn how to be a better person albeit stubbornly. We're a ways into season 3 so far, but wow this is probably the best HBO series of all time.

"The Boys" looks interesting:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06rueu_fh30 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06rueu_fh30)

The premise is a CIA black ops team is put together to "take care" of any superheroes that get out of line. I know its based off a comic series.

Quote
The series is set in a world where superheroes exist. However, most of the superheroes in the series' universe are corrupted by their celebrity status and often engage in reckless behavior, compromising the safety of the world. The story follows a small clandestine CIA squad, informally known as "The Boys", led by Butcher and also consisting of Mother's Milk, the Frenchman, the Female, and new addition "Wee" Hughie Campbell, who are charged with monitoring the superhero community, often leading to gruesome confrontations and dreadful results.

As mentioned before, I had read Good Omens fairly recently, but my wife had me wait to watch the show until after our child was born (old world superstition) so we finally watched it. I couldn't help but compare it to the book the entire way through and I must say I like the book better, however the show is also good.  They add new scenes to give the book readers something new to see instead of beat by beat the same story. The ending is essentially the same thing but they go about it differently after the climax. My two biggest complaints about the show 1) the Narrator's pacing (I felt the audio-book had better pacing regarding the narration, and the show narration just seemed rushed) 2) The story seemed rushed. It could be that to me it seemed like it took the entire last week of earth to get through everything whereas the show makes everything happen over the course of the last 3ish days. Now I must admit these are nitpicks and that is one advantage the book will have over any TV show or book is plenty of time to delve into everything. There were many more nit picks I had, but they are just nit picks because I like the book and YMMV.  The show was still great and the new things they did, they did well.

I was a big fan of Good Omens as well. Very similar, I still like the book more but the show was very well done. Crowely and Aziraphale had excellent casting and played off each other very well.

I'm rewatching the Expanse to get ready for Season 4 coming later in the year, and I've managed to get my folks into it as well. All I had to do was put the first episode on in the background while people were sitting around and within ten minutes its all "What is this?", "Oh this looks cool." etc.

I tried to watch Glow season 3 and gave up.
Everyone else has complained [at great length] about the pointless and needless sexual politics in it. My biggest complaint would be the camping episode. I mean, come on. A group of city girls go camping for the weekend and they DONT panic when It gets dark AND they manage to erect their tents immediately. I fond it harder to swallow then the 19 year old who was selling movie scripts

Anyone checked out "Primal" yet on Cartoon Network's late night line up Adult Swim? I just caught the ending half of an episode. Its pretty dope. Its like the Conan the Barbarian stories/novels but if Conan was a caveman and teams up with a dinosaur. Its very brutal. Its made by the same guy that created Samurai Jack, Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, The Original 2d Clone Wars series, and Hotel Transylvanian. Definitely worth a watch!
