Title: Random Places to Visit and See ...
Post by: GamesPoet on October 09, 2018, 03:39:59 PM
My laptop has a browsing system on it that provides some good pictures that show up as my computer turns on.

This morning it had another picture of a place I'd like to visit and see ... and it reminded me of W-E in a bit of a fantasy like way ... and so I've started this thread for folks to share ... Random Places To Visit and See ...

Ashness Bridge near Keswick in Cumbria, England

You like your pack horse bridges, GP? Here's me as a highwayman leading a stolen horse across a pack-horse bridge near to Marsden, West Yorkshire.

I liked the bridge so much I took my kids there for a walk over it and around the hills a couple of weeks later.

I tell the kids that I wanted a dark colour for my panache, not a white one, because I am a highwayman. With a dark panache I can hide in the shadows, but with a white one pursuers would see me as I fled, like a willo-the-wisp dancing between the trees, or a jack-o-lantern advertising my presence to all and sundry.

@ GP : awesome bridge.
@ padre : definitely not the desire of a highwayman 😸 although I like the description of the flight

About 10 miles from me - when I was working I'd go under and past it about once a week on my way to customers.  :biggriin:

………… and as you saw in the picture - my location details are accurate.

Well then, at least three things to visit in your area ... the Viaduct, a trip out to Battle Abbey, and Midaski himself.

England is high on my list of places to visit, and there seems to be so much to see!

Venice. Always.

Monet’s Garden Giverny.

Fontainbleu (second largest chataeu in France after Versailles).

St Niklaas (to visit old friends)

Copenhagen - pretty cool place. 1 week is good, not in winter!

Lisbon - also a very cool place. Lots to do, and the timeout market is actually very good food, even though its on the lists, its worth it. My wife even said she preferred the tarts there, than at the famous tart shop in Belum.

Modena (make sure you book Osteria Francescana ahead of time) Modena itself is cute to walk around and explore.

Sydney - the harbour and Rocks area are touristy, but for good reason. Suggest trying to book Quay or one of our other 3 hat restaurants well in advance) plus you can visit me!

Tasmania (beautiful place, I fell into one of the famous waterfalls as a child)

Uluru (its expensive to get to, but pretty special)

Kyoto (those old castles and hilltop temples, plus really good bakery in the main station complex)

Harajuku (Tokyo) awesome gyoza place off the beaten track - very highly rated, but pretty traditional and fun.

That is totally cool!👆There looks to be a tunnel going off to nowhere on the left. Is that the special alien garden?
We have a 1950’s era nuclear bunker called the Diefenbunker built to house all our ‘important’ people in a nuclear war. It’s now a museum just down the road from us. I love stuff like this

I dream of living in Montana, but age being what it is, I'll probably just visit.  I recall seeing the movie "A River Runs Through It", and besides getting me all hyped for fly fishing (figured if it was half as good as in the movie it had to be very good, and it is), it also got me wanting to go to Montana.  Haven't been yet, but it's going to happen. :icon_mrgreen:

Just came back from a little trip to a desert like area in Colombia. I expect this house to be quiet boring, but the design was amazing.

Constructed by an old classmate from my father for 15 years (1999-2014) and built entirely out of mud and cooked after to add strength and water resistance. Whole house has a Gaudí style, and from the side you can see that the structure has a fish shape. Everywhere you can find little decorations or designs of real or fantasy creatures (elephants, dragons, etc). I couldnt find a good picture of the house online, so when I get the ones we took I will post more if you want.

Gaudi was inspired by natural structure strength and design. I see parts in the picture you sent, but also not as well. Though that may he the medium used. Definitely looks intended to be organic shaped though. Looks underwatery.

I think I could handle living in the red cottage. Only been to ocean park Maine before. I was 13 and a friends family rented a beach house for a month and I was invited. Totally fell in love with the place. I really think I could live there, new hampdhire, Vermont or Nova Scotia if I was ever to pack up and leave.

Some of my favorite places on my side of the world.  When I visit here, I am happy.

Tofino/Long Beach - Vancouver Island, BC.  Always rainy, always spectacular (when I'm there anyways).  Food, wine, seafood, happyiness.

Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) Friendliest, spookiest, most awe inspiring place I ever visited.  Kayak'd once as a teenager and went to see old First Nations villages/poles.  Life altering visit for those who are open to a different experience.

http://www.gohaidagwaii.ca/blog/kayak-haida-gwaii (http://www.gohaidagwaii.ca/blog/kayak-haida-gwaii)

K-Country, Alberta.  The rural mountain experience that isn't a tourist trap.  What ever you like to do outdoors, you can do here.  Seriously.

https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/kananaskis-country/ (https://www.albertaparks.ca/parks/kananaskis/kananaskis-country/)

Sentry Box, Calgary AB - Your favorite game/GW/mini's store will fit within the fiction section of this store (I'm not kidding).  That's not including the Historical section (larger than most entire stores), board games, and mini's.  So big they eventually pawned off the CCG section into an entirely different store to be able to keep expanding the mini's section.  Motto "If it's in print, we'll try to stock it." Not an idle saying.  I have spent untold amount of hours there, playing many many things.  Check out the "About us" tab for images.  The News/Events tab will have you visiting every day.

Ha ha, GP. You're joking with us. As if there really is a place called Sweden, named after the vegetable Swede. Next you'll be telling us there's a place called Carrotland, or that there are places named after Brussel Sprouts or Tangerines or Turkish Delight or Black Forest Gateau! Hang on, I may have weakened my argument.

I don't know how this will work, since I've never shared IG pics via forum before, but I recently made an unplanned visit to White Sands, NM (USA) and was really moved by its beauty.

I'm disappointed I couldn't have waited around a few more days, since twice a year (including the first Sat. in April) they open up the Trinity Test ground zero monument! I'd like to plan a return trip to not only see the monument, but also spend a night camping on the dunes. The night sky is supposed to be beautiful there.

I believe Patagonia is in South America.

Going to be in Fairfax, VA for a work trip soon. Won't have much time, but wonder if there is anything nearby (outside of DC) worth seeing. Anyone been to the Manassas battlefield? Other suggestions?

Patagonia is in South America ... Argentina & Chile.

Unless one counts the business, which is in Ventura CA. :icon_wink:

And yes, I've been to Manassass Battlefield a number of times.  I have enjoyed it.  It is a smaller overall park then say Gettysburg or Antietam, although I've enjoyed exploring the area where the 1st Battle was fought which is the most accessible, and I've hiked through a good portion of the 2nd Battle area north of the main area that was fought over in both as well.

Here's somewhere that looks worth a visit.
Ł25 for an adult ticket to the show I understand, and there are side attractions to see as well as the show.

7.5 acre stage - Yes that big!

Hope this works outside the UK?

Quote
This is probably the best English history lesson you'll ever see. Kynren is the biggest outdoor spectacle in the UK since the 2012 Olympics. Set outdoors, below Bishop Auckland Castle, with over a thousand actors performing, this show tells the story of a thousand years of British history in an incredibly immersive way. With limited performances this summer (2017), Kynren by Eleven Arches is worth a special trip to the North East for.

No - I'm on the South Coast, and Bishop Auckland is way up North.
My sister lives fairly close, so if I am up that way on a visit, I might give it a go.

If anyone has it may well be Padre - He's a lot closer, and he is a historical buff.

I've been traveling for work quite a bit for the past few months, though most of it has been uninteresting. All of my time has been spent working.  :| The best place I've been so far was Kennewick, WA, which was unexpectedly a desert environment. I was expecting Twin Peaks, but got dry 100 degree days. But they were quite tolerable, and the people and restaurants were all very nice! Sadly, no time to explore. I'm hoping I go back there for a folllow-up and get a chance to see more.

I am contemplating a return trip to camp for a night or two in White Sands, which I posted about earlier in the year. It was such a beautiful place, I'd love to spend more time there and I understand the view of the galaxy at night is pretty good....

I kind of have some places I would like to visit, but they are all typically remote from where I am and the cost and time to get there is pretty steep and I can't bring myself to work on it. Part of the reason is that I don't like the 'traveling' part of traveling, unless its by car. I am a control freak and I really don't like flying since I am not the one flying if that makes sense. Nor do I like being dependent on a mechanic making sure a 10-cent washer was screwed in properly or some important fuse doesn't blow. I know I have to get over it. As well as stop watching airline disaster shows.

That being said, I have been to some 30-odd countries. I traveled a lot as a kid. Even though I am from the US, I spent much of my childhood in South East Asia during the 1980s. I lived in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. I didn't realize it till recently, but I believe I lived in that area of the world when it was still exotic, but starting its exotic decline. I went to India, Nepal, Sir Lanka, Maldives, Australia, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea as well. And as kid I appreciated little of it, although now I fully grasp how awesome it was. I say that, because for example, when I lived in Indonesia at the time, there was nothing. I mean, like an hour of TV each day, and few imports from our home countries. There was so little to do, and I hate the culture, my friends and I used to jump the fence to the school we went to (Jakarta International School) on the weekends to find things to do. Imagine that. I lived there for three years, and couldn't wait to leave. Now they have McDonalds and cable TV with 400 channels like everyone else.

However, I went to an international school. Just about everywhere we lived had one, so I had friends from everywhere from Denmark to Brazil to Australia. I grew up around a lot of different people and it was awesome. I also saw part of the world untouched by man. I mean, we visited islands you only see in magazines where I was sure the fish were seeing a human for the first time. I caught an octopus with my hands 10 feet from the shore, played with him for half and hour, and let him go. Try finding that anywhere in the coastal US. And now, unfortunately, a lot of those places I went are probably polluted or built up by now. I could go on and on about some of these places and what I saw.

Within the last few years, I got the opportunity to go back to India (Mumbai) for work, and also back to China (Hong Kong) for vacation. The changes over the years didn't escape me. The two things that floored me where the amount of people in both places (and therefore lack of space), and how much everyone wants what the west has. I was surprised walking around the financial district in Hong Kong, how all the ads and billboards feature western (white) models showcasing Rolex to Tiffany's, almost saying, if you want to appear successful, you have to look western and buy western products. What was gone was many of the older buildings with asian architecture, handmade arts and crafts, and everything else that made it exotic. The only thing that made Hong Kong different from any other city was the racial make up of the population. Granted, I spent a lot of time walking around Mong Kok and that certainly has an older Hong Kong feel, but give it time. McDonalds, Nike, Columbia, all over the strip in Kowloon, you would have thought I was walking in a US mall. And in the case of India, right outside our offices there was a Dominoes Pizza, Chili's Bar and Grill, and something else I can't remember. The point is, this part of the world no longer felt exotic. I even picked up a magazine showcasing interior design in Hong Kong, and everything looked like it was bought from Ikea. And the handmade arts and crafts are long gone, replaced by cheap cellphone covers and other cheap plastic crap mass produced in the Chinese mainland. They have lost their 'art' if that makes sense. The guy who made figures our of clay in his fishing village has a son who doesn't want to make clay figures, he wants a job at the iPhone factory. That kind of thing.

The world is getting small. I have seen the future, and its pretty overpopulated with people. Sci-fi writers of the 1960s nailed it. And where humans go, poverty follows. Poverty that is impossible to describe. Children growing up in trash who don't know any better. Entire slums manufacturing whatever they can from the crap thrown aside by the upper classes. And this is everywhere. I don't care how hard you have it in the US, you don't know poverty. The fact you can turn on your tap and out comes potable water is a luxury BILLIONS on this planet will never have. We really live in another dimension here. Its no wonder so many want to come here.

I have been to Europe, Central America, the Caribbean as well, although I haven't been to Greece or Italy, which I probably would love. I have been all around the US too. I traveled around parts of the US just in my SUV by myself, sometimes with a girlfriend, and it was some of the best times of my life. I have owned three Mustangs, but my Ford Explorer is my favorite car of all time:

I would typically stick to campgrounds, but if I couldn't make it to one, my backup plan was:

Breakfast in Utah:

Breakfast in the Smokeys:

My problem with arriving somewhere is that I don't want to see tourists. I don't want to rush through tour bus stops. My ideas of travel is to rent an SUV and drive around on my own like I did in the US. Eat where the locals eat, drink where the locals drink. But that isn't always safe either. I don't really want to go to countries that don't speak English either or have a corrupt legal system, so that rules out a lot.

I guess I am drawn to places where I could rent an SUV for three weeks, and bounce around staying at small hotels or campgrounds and taking in the country and landscape. I would love to drive around New Zealand, Australia, and Scotland if I could, and visit the more-remote places in those countries.

And I think bouncing around the islands in the South Pacific would be cool too. What more would you need besides a backpack?

And Cuba before Starbucks and McDonalds moves in.

I guess I have come to realize that the last exotic places on earth are the ones not built up by man. And with all the pollution, trash, climate change going on, I don't know how much longer these places will remain as they are, and those are the ones I seek out the most. And so much of it is fenced off private property.

If you think like me, I can make a few recommendations... one of which is Grand Teton. I love this place. Its right outside of Jackson, WY, and even has Jackson Hole Airport pretty much in the park. Lots of campgrounds there. It gets overshadowed because Yellowstone is just north of it. The best part is most of the visitors don't hike deep into the park, so once you get away from the crowds its an amazing place. Here is a pic of me in Cascade Canyon on the way to Solitude lake:

Grand Teton is worth googling. And since I mentioned Yellowstone. . . let me say this. Yellowstone is a unique place. You will see some crazy things there, from the Geysers to literally boiling mud. I came across boiling mud on a trail and it freaked me out. I learned later a wolf fell in some, and eventually died a painful death a week later. It can be a dangerous place. But that is what makes Yellowstone great. Its getting off the figure 8 and the morons stopping traffic because they see a wolf 2 miles away. Its not a zoo but people treat it like one. Def spend some time at places like Old Faithful and so one, but set time aside for lesser known trails, and that is where the magic is at. And that is the problem with Yellowstone, its just too big. You could spend a month there and only scrape the surface. And if you just stick to the road, you'll miss 99% of it.

Found one of my fav pics on my phone. This was taken in Arizona. I love northern Arizona. I have been to the Grand Canyon 4 times. Camped at it, stayed at the el Tovar, and hiked almost down to the bottom (getting out is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do).

But driving on the open road, with a full tank of gas... no traffic. I didn't see another car for miles at a time. I had to take this picture as I was driving along.

But now when I look at it, I only see the fences on either side of the road. All that space, and you are limited to a strip of it. This is what I mean about the world getting smaller. And lame!

It's the canal side beneath the city walls of Chester. My dad lives there and whenever we go to visit the boys want to do an early morning circumambulation of the city's circumvallation! This time we did stretches below the walls also instead of staying on the parapet. Of course, being boys (me included),  we always stop at a certain wooden park to play for half an hour or so. All this buys time for Ruth to do what women like to do at the start of the day!

The under-city looks like a fun place to explore. I assume your adventures didn't escalate into hunting Skaven in the actual sewers!

There are meant to be catacombs beneath our Cathedral, which I'd love to explore! Speaking of which, I was there Friday evening as my sister was in a show that was on there, specifically the musical Oliver Twist. I do love these old buildings at dusk:

Oomph. That is nice. In response to your medieval Holy Place, Von Zorn, I'll show you another 'holy place', the stone circle (in Albion) I took my boys to a couple of weeks ago (actually in the woods near Masham, Ripon, called the 'Druids Temple' and built by a Victorian magnate to give the locals some paid work to do!)

The pile of stones you see here went all the way up to the heavens. Honest! You believe me, don't you?

My brave boys even entered the dark cave of an inner sanctum beyond the second layer of circle, where a great sacrifice stone lay! (I told the boys the stone was where the faeries and goblins had their feasts.)

Damn, you would need a whole staff to take care of that house. Imagine all the dusting that would have to be done.

I spend a lot of time looking at rich people's houses in Colorado. Here's a sample:

https://www.christiesrealestate.com/sales/co-usa/price-high-sort

I dream of owning my own valley, with owning the peaks around it, so I am the only one it it, and I see no lights from other houses.

The houses aren't even what I am looking at, although its nice then there is a nice house. But I would happily live in a trailer for some of these views and properties.

I don't need much! Just like $50 million!

Carrizo Plain National monument in California is a nice little gem I found years ago. 90% of the time its a desert but if the rains are right and you hit it in right time of the year (February-early April) you might get lucky and see the whole valley spring to life with wild flowers.

At least once a year I also make a trek to Parkfield CA and the surrounding Diablo/Temblor Mountain range. Something about the rolling golden hills spotted with sage oaks really does it for me. If you're ever in the Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo area I recommend a drive along the Parkfield Grade road.

My old photo really doesn't do it justice:

I'm in the process of slowly developing fluff for this thread, including some amendments to the time line in the first post.

For now ... I would love to go see this ...

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=rupea+romania&FORM=wsbs01&filters=IsConversation:%22True%22+BTEPKey:%22Encyclo_WL_RupeaCitadelRomania%22&trivia=1

This location is almost how I picture the Citadel for my Averland characters who live on the Aver River across the ferry from cattle market in the Stirland town of Scheibbs.

I have yet to give the main small town a name, but the town is situated at the corner of where a stream flows into the Aver River from the south (not on most maps) and into the hills to the southeast, and the dirt road from the ferry leads down along the east bank of the stream, past the Citadel on the rocky knoll to the east, and all the way south to a small vassal village protected by a two towered keep with a double gate and a small moat surrounding it, and from here a footpath extends out to the Town of Bieswang on the main northerly east to west road from Averheim to Pfungzig.  Forming the center of the main small town near the Aver River is the road that goes west crossing the stream via a small stone bridge and into the woods where there is a logging camp with another vassal village, and the road goes east along the Aver River to the town of Sauerapfel in The Moot.

Besides lumber from the logging camp, and cattle from the local farms in the hills, the main small town is surrounded by vineyards which are the primary source of the wealth in the area. The main white grape is Reisling, although Sauvignon Blanc is also a specialty, while the primary red grape is Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Bretonnia grown as well.  Since 2401, one grower has been giving a go to Tilean Primitivo, yet rarely has their been a very good year.  For some reason, red raspberries also grow well here, and this helps provide a lucrative trade with the halflings of The Moot.

The Aver River Regiment is based at the Citadel and has the responsibility of patrolling the Aver River to the edge of the woods in the west all the way along the Aver River and along the border of The Moot, frequently traveling through the southern edge of Mootland, and to and along the Blue Reach all the way to the World's Edge Mountains.  They've often found themselves battling bandits, beastmen, orcs and goblins, undead, and of course unruly Stirlanders.  The latter has been known to hurt the cattle trade from time to time.

Going to post this in my fluff thread on my Averland characters ...

@Realjuan

Awesome pics man, I can almost feel the cool air and breathe in the pure oxygen.

I am always amazed that Europe has vast open areas that aren't developed. Considering how long its been around for, I would just think everywhere is over-developed by now.

I was looking at pics of Montana just before I saw these. I have such a bug to move out west. I live in the South though, and aren't really sure I could handle the winter year after year. I used to live up in the North East, and it got old really quick. But I am so tired of people and congestion that all I want is to be where few people are now. I can't imagine how bad ass it would be to wake up, make a cup of coffee, walk out to my patio overlooking some mountains in the distance, and watch elk graze.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SOMEONE GIVE ME 50 MILLION SO I CAN GO BUY MY REMOTE DREAM HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Santorini is a magical place. Did you sit on the cliff face, have dinner and watch the sun set over that harbour?
I had a mousaka and wine there. I had an octopus stew casserole in thessolonika that was really good. I was travelling with a couple of Germans and a guy from Saskatoon. The Canuck was full boar till I told him what he was eating and the fork stopped halfway to his mouth and that was it. Good laugh to be had for me and the Germans.

Okay its official. I am doing one of my week-long exploring trips to Colorado next year around April/May. I have been obsessing over Colorado the last year and just going to fly into Denver, rent an SUV, and explore the state for a week, jumping from campground to campground if I can, otherwise hitting whatever I can find at the end of each day.

Been hitting Google Street View checking out random places and I just are amazed at what I am finding.

Take Ouray for example, a town like 5 blocks by 6 blocks in the mountains:

https://www.google.com/maps/@38.0228855,-107.6715225,3a,75y,196.91h,82.56t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1szocUknnSC8tjMqXdUdTPtg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

I have no idea what these people do for work.

Ouray is on the Million Dollar Highway, so miles and miles of this:

https://www.google.com/maps/@38.0000628,-107.6611669,3a,75y,134.75h,92.43t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sOOSAlb4uBTWkyexX6fo0cg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Telluride, which might be a touristy place as I think skiing is popular in the area, but another tiny town:

https://www.google.com/maps/@37.9377241,-107.8129009,3a,75y,112.33h,85.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s39PkHRM02oK8BmvmbFLkvQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

I would like to sit on this spot for a few hours, or one like it, which there seem to be hundreds:

York is great. Certain wall sections are closed for very long term repairs. Another example is Chester where my father lives. Whenever I visit with my two boys we always get up early one morning and do the full wall circuit.

Just saw that you liked Vineyards in Germany.
This is close to my place like 30 minutes, and its a great place to hike in spring when the weather still a little bit cold.
Cant find any good pictures from this year, so this is all I have
