Rodent problem around the Blighted Marshes? Goblin infestation? Elf arrogance? No worries - Leonardo da Miragliano comes to the rescue!
Below are his latest inventions. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Leonardo's Ribauldequin, together with a new and improved Bronzino's Galloper Gun!

The Ribauldequin is based on Leonardo da Vinci's own design:

And inspired by some real-life efforts:

...and lovingly crafted out of Plastruct styrene sheets, sticks, and tubes (with a figure for scale):

Now I just need to paint these bad boys, put them on scenic bases and come up with a suitably dashing crew!   :engel:

The Brush and Palette / Estalian Mercenary Tercios
« on: August 06, 2009, 12:18:53 AM »
A heads up... I just ordered these excellent Gamezone models from Maelstrom Games. The prices are very reasonable and  the shipping is free worldwide.

They are $11.40/pack of 3 w/ free shipping. I thought I would point a few people in this guy's direction:

These are perfect for Estalian Mercenaries in Empire or Tilea. Some youtube links may come just handy too, such as this scene of battle of Rocroi from Alatriste. Just right for painting these beauties!

The Brush and Palette / Imperial Forge Decals - getting back online
« on: May 12, 2009, 05:33:00 AM »
Hello everyone,

Due to grad. school pressures I had to remove my decals from my ebay shop, pending resolution of real-life issues. I am slowly getting my stuff back online. Unfortunately, my website had to go, as I relocated in Sep. and my provider was not covering my new area. SO I am re-working my e-bay shop for now. It will take a while to re-list everything I had, but little by little, it will be done. Today, this set was re-listed:

One of our illustrious members, the Witchfinder General sent me a pic of his Greatswords sporting decals from this set, so I thought I would post it for everyone to marvel  :smile2:

Obviously, the decal was painted over somewhat and further detailed, but it will provide an idea of what these can do when coupled with good painting. I also happen to believe that even a mediocre paintjob can be brought up visually and improved upon if these bad boys are used.  :icon_cool:

So, in short, just a note to say I am back from the dead! And so are my decals  :engel:

The Electors' Forum / Basing Warhounds Question
« on: July 18, 2008, 09:04:29 AM »
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it.

Having just bought some beautiful Reaper Warhounds for my upcoming Ulrican forestry project, I am now puzzled as to how one should base them... Is there any meaningful way to do it? Do I put them on single infantry bases with separate handlers? Or do I base handlers and dogs on a common base? The problem is, one of the dogs is enormous...

and will only fits on a cavalry base. Two others are smaller and can be put on infantry bases.

Is there a coherent and playable way to do this for all?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

The Brush and Palette / Some WIP Averlanders
« on: July 14, 2008, 08:54:09 AM »
I amtrying to salvage a unit of Averlanders I bought on e-bay a couple of years ago. Up to now they have been collecting dust in a bin, but now I am finally inthe mood to work on them. So far I tried to pull up the command unit by working on some highlights and playing with the banner...

I used my own decals (finally!  :eusa_wall:) and was pleased with the overall look. But I realized, I suck at doing yellow on large plain surfaces  :icon_cry: Decals actually do a good job of covering my mistakes and providing a unifying image.

Well, to be continued (hopefully). The officer needs one of 'em badass shields... Then come the halberdiers...

16
I undertook to write this tutorial for a couple of reasons… First, I dislike the current Kislevite range by GW. I find the figures awkward, bulky, cumbersome, uni-pose and just plain uninspiring.  :icon_evil: Second, I like working with plastics and creating new projects for myself. Third, I do not want to depend on the availability of figures and bits from GW. It is so much more fun to make by yourself what has only been available commercially previously. Gives you a sense of freedom and possibilities…   :engel:

Anyway, ‘ere we go…

The participants:

Everything is pretty straightforward here. Plastic shields you see were made from Plastruct plasticard (If you look at the workshop section of my website, you will find the exact product number you can use. Thickness is the same as banners). Two of the shields were left flat, and two were cut out of the piece of plastic I curved using a heat gun. The idea is the same as described in my banner-making article, except that you use a heat gun instead of a stove as the source of the heat.

The shields were inspired by various eastern European 16th century shields, such as this Hungarian beauty from the Metropolitan Museum in New York:

The flat shields had a semi-convex piece of Plastruct plastic glued in the middle to create a central ridge.  Here is a close-up:

The swords were cut out of plastic strips (Plastruct again!) with curved scissors. Tangs were cut out with an X-Acto knife, to be inserted into the hand.  A wire-thin piece of plastic was glued to the center of the blade to simulate the fuller ridge:

Wire was used to create guards and quillons for the sabers.  I hate the current crude Kislevite scimitars. I wanted to reproduce something more sophisticated, so opted for some Polish and Hungarian Karabela sabers, aiming for something like this:

Another close-up:

The handguards were glued to the plastic saber with ordinary superglue. Additionally, the ends of the quillons were given a drop of superglue as well – both to hold them well together, and give them nice, rounded quillon-like endings. The center ridge can also be achieved by gluing a thin piece of metal wire in the center – the effect will be the same, and the metal wire may actually strengthen the plastic blade. I just happen to like plastic.

At this point I had to worry about the important part – reproducing a Kislevite head.  After a quick scan of the net, I had an idea of what I wanted:

A Catachan head was used for this purpose. The top was stripped/sliced off and a piece of plastic was glued, with the top roughly rounded up with a hobby knife. A very thin strip of plastic was heat-curved and glued around the brim, to represent the fur flaps:

I know, I know,… not much to look at – so far! Here comes the fun part. I wanted fur. I wanted to avoid working with the green stuff, because I am not particularly good at it. And then I realized that the SAME EXACT EFFECT – fur texture - can be achieved with SAND! Here are the results:

The plastic brim was painted with Elmer’s white glue and the head was dipped into a sand container.  It looked a bit rough at this point, so I knocked off excess glue, added drops of glue where there were gaps, and added more sand to those areas… and it became a lot more presentable. At this point, I glued the same thin plastic wire (see sword-making above) to a thin piece of plastic cut to look like a feather, heat-curved everything, and glued the resulting “feather” to the front of the head:

At this point, the next big challenge was the feathered wings, used by the Kislevites. Well, I decided to boldly go… Again, curved scissors were used to cut out the general shape, which I had previously traced with a Sharpie marker around the actual wing:

I went over the edges with a small file, applied some plastic glue to melt the rough spots a bit, and the general shape was ready. Since I had no way (so far I haven’t come up with anything satisfactory) to reproduce the feather pattern like you see on the original wing casting, I decided I will simply paint it on during he painting stage.

Time to put everything together… This is where the real fun begins!  :icon_twisted:

Wings glued on here:

And, finally, the big one – time to prime! When the new creation consists of such different parts, I anticipate the priming stage with some trepidation, as the primer will unify the previously disparate parts and move the project closer to what my imagination depicted originally.

Kislevite Winged Dragoon primed:

I think he looks dandy! Rough, dashing, and violent, much like his Polish-Hungarian historical counterparts. I am really looking forward to painting him! And his shield will be a nice testing field for those Kislevite decals I am planning to design.

Another, older more experienced warrior just off the modeling table…

To be continued (hopefully) with more models and painting…

 :::cheers:::

The Brush and Palette / Kislevite Decals?
« on: January 15, 2008, 09:35:35 PM »
Like it says on the tin, I am considering working on some Kislevites, so I might as well make decals for them... I have been toying with the idea for ages.

I would like to know everyone's opinion as to what you guys would be interested in seeing on Kislevite banners and shields? Kislev is a special place and in my idea, should be somewhat distinct from the Empire, but display strong Imperial influence in heraldry. So, here are some initial ideas:

Griffons for the Gryffon Legion?
Bears for Kossars?
Inanimate symbols like stars, crosses, etc. for the rank and file?

Text for the banners... Well, the picture shows what I have in mind and what I would like to know

Am I missing anything? Suggestions? Is this worth doing? Would there be an interest at all?

The Brush and Palette / Imperialforge's Painting Blog
« on: January 12, 2008, 09:02:56 AM »
Well, yes, I have succumbed to the temptation. I usually hate showing unpainted miniatures saying something like, "pics up soon", only to disappear forever... but I thought this blog form might actually provide motivation and a stimulus to complete the project... hopefully  :eusa_wall:

Anyway, here goes my new Reiklander-to-be standard bearer WIP:

Humble beginnings...

Err... more pics up soon...  :icon_redface:

OK... I am finally back, after almost half a year of absence away from home. While I was away, a client sent me pictures of his painted knights with my decals on them. My hands were itching to upload htem!  :smile2:

Anyway, I thought, I would share... These figs are from Front Rank and Foundry Wars of the Roses ranges. I think hey look rather dandy!  Hope you gentlemen enjoy them  :::cheers::: Nice alternative figures for our beloved Empire!

The Electors' Forum / Willie 30mm Landsknechts
« on: November 25, 2007, 02:13:26 PM »
I thought I would point members' attention to these:

These are 30mm, so in theory they should work... Perhaps some of our British chaps have seen them in the flesh?

They can be had here:
http://www.traditionoflondon.com/index.asp?page=Home.asp

Obviously, there are already some good choices from Foundry and Old Glory, especially where rank-and-file pikemen are concerned, but I thought the command above was a nice variation on a theme...

The Electors' Forum / Sigmar - is it a copyrighted name?
« on: November 24, 2007, 08:34:08 AM »
I am just curious... It is closely associated with GW' Warhammer Fantasy Battle, but a cursory internet check also revealed it to be a German /Scandinavian first name. Therefore, can it really be copyrighted? Actually, the same question goes for Karl-Franz...

The reason I am curious is because I was interested in making decals for Empire banners with mottos, slogans, etc., including "Sigmar" in Renaissance gothic script. However, I do not want to cross GW's legal department, so I thought I would broach the subject here first. Do our legal minds have an opinion on this? Advice would be greatly appreciated  :::cheers:::

The Brush and Palette / My Provincial Knights WIP
« on: November 10, 2007, 03:43:06 PM »
This is a WIP unit of provincial knights from the town of Wyvernsburg. They are not members of any order, and are not famous, but are haughty, ambitious and jealous of other orders' wealth and fame, so they all try to outdo each other and knights from other orders/towns by dazzling display of wealth, heraldry, expensive armour, etc. Each one, as much as his finances will permit...

The figures are Battlemasters, with the exception of the commander, the trumpeter, and the standard bearer, which all have Bretonnian bodies with imperial heads. I wanted to take the miniatures from the "bottom of the pile" - BattleMasters in this case, which everyone sneers at, and do something special with them... I think they can be made to  look good...   :smile2:

The trumpeter was "converted" using bits and plasticard...
